Having a great idea is the first step to creating a great room, but the idea alone won’t get paint on the wall, the perfect fixtures or the right piece of art in the right place. We need help to make our design dreams become reality. Working closely with a team you trust can bring out the best in your house, whether it’s one room getting a remodel, or an entire home being decorated from loft to basement. Remember, it’s OK to ask for help when it comes to your home and garden needs. In fact, when everyone is working toward the same goal that stemmed from your original idea, the results are tailor made for you! In addition to our local features this issue, you’ll find details on the NARI Home Improvement Showcase and the perfect guide to a great antiquing weekend in our region. And be sure not to miss our next issue when DIFFA’s Dining By Design returns to Columbus! You can always find us online at www.housetrends.com. Look for us on Facebook by searching Housetrends Columbus and on Twitter by searching Housetrends. Enjoy! Sincerely,

Steve Hesson and the Housetrends staff

a fIrm frIendshIp between homeowner

and desIgner Kristin Dach and her family had looked for a property at Choctaw Lake for years

when the opportunity finally surfaced during a 4th of July party. Original plans were as simple as one addition to the existing structure; but who ever sticks to original plans? After running into lake level water issues the plans transformed into moving the site of the house further up a hill and starting from square one. The planned layout of the home with an addition was still the route the family wanted to go. “We went a little larger than originally planned you could say. It’s amazing how wanting to add a library can result in adding 2,000 square feet to the house,” Kristin says. continued >

With a larger, very open lake house on her hands, Kristin knew she would need help with interior design plans; enter Donna Rosenthal, interior designer and Allied Member ASID. “Donna has just been absolutely invaluable to me,” Kristin says. “I had a lot of ideas when it came to the house. I’m just not the person to make them happen and Donna is.” One challenge for Rosenthal, and one that she welcomed was the sheer size of the house. Many elements had to be custom made such as doors and furniture to get the look everyone was trying to achieve. Rosenthal and Kristin’s design concept was a transitional look. “It’s not contemporary and it’s not traditional, it’s right in the middle,” Rosenthal says. “Kristin likes transitional with a bit of European flavor to it.” European touches can definitely be found in the kitchen which has always been a favorite room for Kristin. “Growing up for me, the kitchen has always been the heart of the house,” she says. Kristin and her family are not formal diners and are always up for entertaining. Her inspiration for the kitchen table came from The Last Supper, due to the fact that she didn’t want a lot of width to the table but she wanted it to seat a lot of people. The table is custom and seats 12 easily. continued >

Opposite: Custom furniture, rich paint colors and warm draperies make the master bedroom relaxing and romantic. Left: Kristin’s art collection includes artists such as David Hostetler and Mark Yale Harris. Bottom Left: “When I saw it, it just screamed ‘put me in your bedroom,’” Kristin says of the chandelier in the master bedroom.

Bigger and better Rosenthal knew that Kristin along with her husband, their son and daughter, two dogs and two cats wanted a house they could all really live in, not just a show house. Kristin would come to Rosenthal with ideas that Rosenthal would then take to the next level. “She showed me a photo of bedroom furniture that she liked and we went off of it but we ended up making the headboard three times the size and redesigned the other furniture to fit the scale of the room better,” Rosenthal says. In the master bedroom Kristin says she was looking for a romantic sanctuary, but she didn’t want the room too feminine, and above all else no opportunity for clutter. “The room is big, but we’re both clutter freaks and I wanted no storage in there,” Kristin says. “Other than the night stand drawers and a place to hold the remote under the TV, there is no reason to change your clothes in there or leave anything in there. I really wanted it to be designed to be beautiful and to be for sleeping and that’s exactly what we got.” continued >

Above: Unique details can be found throughout the house, everywhere from bathrooms to the kitchen. Right: Kristin wanted to utilize unused space in the house so a piano loft was created.

Kristin is thrilled with the draperies, which cast a warm amber glow and she says all the romance comes in through the chandelier. “I was amazed when I put it up,” Kristin says. “My husband even thinks it’s cool. When I saw it, it just screamed ‘put me in your bedroom.’” Clutter-free living is a theme that Kristin tries to maintain throughout the lakefront home. “There is not an enormous number of rooms here, but they are all very large, which gave us a lot of flexibility when choosing details,” Kristin says. The size of the great room allows for four bright orange couches to be positioned in a half circle. Off of the great room, or rather above it, is a piano loft that Kristin just loves. “It felt foolish not to use that space and provide additional seating,” she says. Kristin had always wanted a piano and it wasn’t until they put one in the house that her husband realized she could really play it! The loft also allows guests fantastic views from both sides: the lake on one and gorgeous views from the front of the house on the other. Perhaps the room that is the most intimate and special to Kristin is the library. “It’s almost like all of my books finally have a home,” she says. The room is only designed for two people and doesn’t have a lot of seating so it’s clear that the space is not a hang out, but rather a personal space for Kristin, which was lacking in her previous home. continued >

decoratingtrends Opposite: The OSU room is any fan’s dream. It also acts as the family’s movie room. Below: The back yard and pool area is a haven for the family. A clean decoration style serves as the perfect choice.

Artistic expression Kristin is an absolute lover of art and has expressed her taste throughout the home. “I’m a firm believer that art buys you,” she says. “People ask how you know what’s good and what artists to buy and I say, if it speaks to something inside of you then it’s the right piece to buy.” Kristin has chosen very special pieces to display in her home from artists such as David Hostetler and Mark Yale Harris. The home has a very comfortable flow when it comes to design; something Kristin was hoping to achieve with Rosenthal. According to Rosenthal, Kristin let her express herself and gave her a lot of free reign, which many clients have a hard time doing. Working on Kristin’s house became such a part of Rosenthal’s life that she takes away more than just the satisfaction of doing a superb job. “When you work on something so long, it becomes a part of you,” Rosenthal says. “Because we worked so closely together, we’ve developed a great friendship.”

“When we moved into our 1980s home three years ago, we knew the master bath was one of the first projects we needed to tackle, as the pink wallpaper and pink carpeting were begging to be replaced,” says homeowner Kathy Palmer. Kathy and her husband Gerry wanted to create a luxury bath while keeping the room as environmentally friendly as possible. Not only were the carpeting and wallpaper eyesores, they both encourage mold, mildew and dust mites, all conditions that can provoke allergies. It was definitely time to green things up a bit. F “People are increasingly thinking about where materials in their homes may wind up once they are done with them,” says Kathy, co-owner of Hilliard, Ohiobased Palmer Builders, LLC. “It’s important that we offer our customers options that are environmentally friendly, as we share their concerns about not adding to landfills that could negatively impact the futures of our children,” she adds. F Gerry, who is also Kathy’s business partner, explains that, as the “green” movement works its way across the country from the environmentally enlightened West Coast, their bathroom and kitchen remodeling and design company—long an advocate of using sustainable products and materials—is positioned to meet the demand. continued >

Tuscan elegance Replacing the gaudy, unwelcome color is the palette of Tuscany with the muted, earthy tones of terra cotta, brown, deep burgundy and gold. Diffused natural light, entering from a single window over the tub, lends a sense of softness to the space, which is set off from the adjoining master bedroom by floor-to-ceiling drapes, that frame the doorway in a unique and dramatic way. The centerpiece for the 16x12-foot master bathroom is a freestanding shower featuring four elegant black slate pillars. One

pillar contains the plumbing conduit for a Hansgrohe “Rainhead” showerhead that can be adjusted for a soft patter or a steady stream. “By replacing the old, oversized enclosed shower stall we were able to make better use of the available space,” Kathy notes. “Also, because this system is more open, it relies on air circulation rather than energy-wasting electric vent fans—which further reduces our carbon footprint,” she observes.

46 housetrends.com 044-048 tBAT RelaxingEnergy.indd 46

9/1/09 8:45:28 AM

The Tuscan color palette is extended in the beautiful multicolored Indian slate that lines the floor of the shower. Because slate is a natural product, it is earth-friendly as well as low maintenance, durable and slip-resistant. Adding elegance to the space—as well as emphasis to the couple’s green commitment—is a graceful, reclaimed clawfoot tub. The Palmers prefer this deep, cast-iron soaking tub to the pedestal-mounted spa-style tub it replaces, because it is not only

more comfortable, but is energy efficient as it does not take as much water to fill to an acceptable level and does not include water-moving apparatus. “Actually, the reclaimed tub is so much more calming, too, because without jets, it’s not only easier on natural resources, but much quieter, which I find very peaceful,” she says. continued >

bathroom trends Couples counseling Kathy and Gerry work in tandem to assure customer satisfaction, beginning with her first on-site visit when she spends time listening to homeowners’ wishes—from basic needs to wildest dreams. She guides homeowners through choices of materials, fixtures and cosmetic touches, while being respectful of individual budgets. Kathy and Gerry agree that most couples make the right choice in choosing his and her vanities, as they did for their own home. “While some homeowners might think they will save money by installing only one sink in the master bathroom, two will pay dividends not only in resale value, but also in marital harmony,” Kathy chuckles. The Palmers’ twin maple vanities are divided by a center hutch that reduces clutter by providing much-needed storage space. Brushed nickel light fixtures coordinate beautifully with faucets and drawer pulls, while the Golden Bordeaux Granite countertops are in keeping with the restful Tuscany theme. Kathy and Gerry also note that spending the time and money to remodel a bath is almost guaranteed to pay off in the end. “Pound for pound, a remodel of these areas outweighs improvements in other parts of the home—by as much as two to three times more per square foot—when it comes time to sell,” he says. “In addition, by choosing to ‘go green,’ homeowners are adopting an approach that can make their home a healthier, more comfortable and more efficient place.” He explains that issues like indoor air quality, energy and resource conservation, reduced material waste and the use of products that are better for both people and the environment are what makes a remodel green.

It’s Not Just Stuff The passion and the process behind collecting antiques

54 housetrends.com 053-058 tFEA AntiquesGuide.indd 54

9/1/09 8:50:45 AM

By Sam Wilder | Illustrations by Tyler Hildebrand We are living in a new age where an engagement in collecting material goods may seem inappropriate to some–but that crowd would not include people who are passionate about collecting antiques. While it’s true that it is possible to be a slave to objects, collectors see their passion as a way of learning and enjoyment. The record collector finds nirvana in music, the political enthusiast learns about the history of a nation in election paraphernalia, and a postcard collector revels in an ancient view of the city where they grew up. Discovering a collecting interest can lead to a lifetime of enlightenment.

It’s fun to build a new circle of friends. There is no shortage of conversation between people who share an interest in a genre of collecting. Two people entangled in a debate about fishing lures sound like a foreign language to the uninitiated. Postcard collectors enjoy sharing specifics. Some collect postmarks while others look for images of building, bridges or a specific holiday or illustrator. There are many nuances to almost every field of collecting. Conversations between collectors help each grow with the sharing of the “secrets” of the field.

It’s a great reason to take a road trip. Almost anything can be purchased online, but technology can take away some of the magic of collecting. Getting in your car and exploring new towns and countryside is a wonderful (albeit old school) way to spend evenings and weekends. There can be great joy residing in the antique shops and cafés of small town America. Conversations that occur with travel companions, fellow shoppers and shop owners will be some of your favorite encounters. You will meet people from all over the globe even if you only travel a couple hours from home. Many collectors tour the country in search of specific items that can only be found by scouring the countryside. You can also learn a great deal about cities and towns by going to those places and talking to the local residents. Traveling is a key ingredient to experiencing the hobby in a complete way.

It’s the thrill of the hunt. You never know what great deal is lurking in the next aisle. Every collector revels in the story of buying a piece of pottery for five dollars at a yard sale that is worth $500. The treasure hunting nature of antique collecting may be at the root of the hobby.

housetrends greater columbus 55 053-058 tFEA AntiquesGuide.indd 55

9/1/09 8:50:56 AM

It’s a great way to expand your world view. Knowledge is power in any business, but in the field of antiques and collectibles knowledge is the key to financial success. A chip in a piece of pottery can render one piece worthless while not widely affecting the value of another based on its scarcity. A baseball card from a rookie season may be worth many times what any card of that player may command at auction. Knowing the hunting habits of the Shawnee Indian is an important skill for an arrowhead enthusiast. To be an advanced collector, you must have more than rudimentary knowledge in the field.

It’s another way to diversify your portfolio. While antique dealers have always claimed that art and antiques are a safe way to invest, it now appears that the thought of putting your savings

into a painting, Oriental rug or piece of furniture may actually make sense–even to a stock broker. Marketplace supply and demand keeps most items priced at fair market value. However, just like Wall Street stocks, some antiques can jump dramatically in value during a collecting cycle while others decrease. Oil paintings, costume jewelry and hand woven rugs are very popular right now, while glassware, production art pottery and old phonographs are in decline.
