—Paul Rand

You might not know the name, but Paul Rand’s work is seen by millions of people every day. The graphic designer created the corporate logos for some of the most well-known companies in the world, including IBM, UPS and ABC. For decades, these companies have relied on the power of a simple design element for branding purposes. Rand couldn’t have been more accurate—design is so simple, but so complicated. The same could be said for interior design. While the shape of a bathtub or the curve of a staircase might seem immaterial, this issue proves that every choice you make affects the overall look of your home. We’re starting off the year by highlighting some of the most intriguing contemporary residential spaces in the Greater Miami Valley. The powder room featured on our cover is part of a home that recently won a 2012 regional CotY Award. You can see the rest of the CotY award-winning projects on our new and improved website, Housetrends.com. While there, be sure to check out our new “Find a Pro” section and enter for your chance to win a stunning glass table lamp from Tracy Glover. We’re hard at work on our next issue, which will be packed with outdoor living projects and ideas. It will arrive in mailboxes and online in late May.

Rhyme andReason Details matter in this contemporary home renovation By Julie Thompson | Photos by Bob Winner/Winner Photography

It may appear as if there was no rhyme or reason in the planning of Dr. Joel and Jennifer Tobiansky’s remodeled home, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The couple knew exactly how they wanted to transform their outdated 1980s home and had spent years accumulating ideas to show for it. continued >

Features that some might see as random— like the home’s new master bedroom fireplace or large living room wall—help create the contemporary style the couple acquired while traveling to places like Las Vegas and Cape Town, South Africa. “We love contemporary and things that have a different look,” Jennifer says. “My husband is from Cape Town, so every time we would go visit I would see things that I loved and would bring those ideas back with us.”

Dramatic entrance and more The Tobianskys watched their vision bloom with the artistic talents of Chris Newman, owner of Cheeky Monkey, and John Albrecht of Albrecht Wood Interiors. Albrecht breathed life into the abstract concepts and added dramatic touches that serve as stunning centerpieces in the home’s main living spaces. In three short months, the Albrecht team gutted five rooms in the Washington Township home, stripping each of less desirable features like stained poplar trim and six-panel doors, and replacing them with rich modern alternatives like larger maple baseboards and onepanel doors. Guests can see the new look as they approach the home’s new handcrafted front doors. Jennifer saw similar doors online so Albrecht told her to purchase the glass and he would create the doors around it. The translucent glass allows light to spill out at night, but still provides the privacy the couple wanted. The foyer’s floor—made up of a carbon colored urbanite tile—flows into the home’s living room and down its hallway. Metal inlays were placed in the tiles to give a hint of Zebra stripes. The look is one of several design details that allude to Joel’s South African roots. The floor design subtly flows with the framed photography on the walls, which Joel took while on an African safari. continued > OVERLEAF: An angled desk, sleek shelves and artwork create a unique atmosphere in the home office. OPPOSITE TOP: The living room wall is accented with an off-center fireplace, television, mirror and large piece of black glass. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: Drum pendant lights, by Uttermost, hang from the ceiling in the foyer. RIGHT: The floating staircase is ultra-contemporary, featuring shiny metal railings and glass panels.

housetrends greater miami valley 19 017-023 tFEA RhymeAndReason.indd 19

3/13/12 12:48:58 PM

The living room is easily viewed from the home’s entrance, something that wasn’t possible with the older design. One important thing Albrecht’s team did when they gutted the home was to remove bulky archways and create larger, cleaner lines in walls. The view is also made possible with a new, stunning staircase that has become the centerpiece for the home’s main floor. The original staircase was a traditional design with round, chunky banisters and an enclosed area underneath for storage. Jennifer was looking for a different feel

20 housetrends.com 017-023 tFEA RhymeAndReason.indd 20

3/13/12 12:49:07 PM

and Albrecht suggested a floating staircase that is held up by a single support below. The railing was custom-made with metal that looks like stainless steel and glass panels on the sides of the stairs allow easier viewing on either side.

A reason for random The unique staircase helps set the stage for the main living room wall. The twostory wall, once just a massive white canvas, has become a tribute to contemporary style. A new background was made on the wall with the use of English sycamore. The

original fireplace, naturally situated in the middle of the wall was then restructured so that it could be moved off center. Several elements—including a rectangular mirror, 60-inch flat screen television and two decorative niches—use the clean lines and sporadic effect often seen in contemporary spaces. One of the most unusual pieces is a six-foot cut of glass that was colored black and hung vertically on the upper left part of the wall. Newman didn’t discuss a particular color scheme when drawing the original designs for the living room. Rather he

used neutral tones and natural woodwork. “I would rather everything to have a natural background and then the accessories and art work could pop out and be very special,” he explains. Albrecht achieved a similar feel in the couple’s bedroom, which was inspired by several suites the couple had enjoyed in Las Vegas. Jennifer wanted a warm, romantic space and that is just what she got. The room’s fireplace gives off a soft glow not just from its fire, but also from the lights carefully placed among the copper columns around it. continued >

ABOVE: The master bedroom design was inspired by Las Vegas hotel suites the homeowners had stayed in during their travels.

The fireplace, its two dark wood beams that run to both sides, and the drawers to its right and left were created as one piece. The colors used in the fireplace are mirrored in the end tables to either side of the bed. Instead of a headboard, Albrecht took round cement frames, cut them in half and covered them with fabric that can be switched out at any time.

Form and functionality Comfort and functionality played a close second to the new design’s contemporary feel. As a cardiologist, Joel’s workdays are often full and demanding so it was important to create a home where he

could return and feel relaxed. Many of the spaces were redesigned with home media in mind, and in particular, the flat screen televisions found in each room. Joel’s favorite feature is the automated system that controls all of the home’s media—including entertainment, security and lighting—on one system. The couple loves to travel and now can control settings with more ease and even from remote areas. They are even alerted through a text message if a door has been opened while they are away. The home’s office was completely restructured to accommodate work space for both Joel and Jennifer and to ade-

quately hold and hide the growing amount of wiring needed to run computers and keep devices charged. The office was also an important room for Joel as the health care industry becomes more computerized. Now, he can return home and slip into the comfort of his office and continue to evaluate patient reports and records. Despite being avid travelers, after seeing their home transformed, the Tobianskys have discovered it’s hard to find a destination that gives them the same feeling as the one they’ve come to realize in their own home. And that’s saying a lot coming from a couple that travels to wind down.

By Holly Schnicke , the color black has been synonymous with bad guys and evil. Today, it is just the opposite. Black, whether as wall color, furniture or accents, is an easy way to add modern elegance to your room.

Black is a mysterious neutral that works

with several color palettes. Mix with bright and bold colors for a more elegant feel or pair with metallics and whites to evoke a clean, sophisticated look.

No

matter which palette you choose, it’s hard to go wrong with such a dominating powerful color.

table touches Eight tips you can use

to set the stage for dining with style

Sometimes By Karen Bradner

it’s fun to make a fuss. When

ifestyle Kitchen Designs introduces a breakthrough way to design the two most renovated rooms of the house. “Kitchens and bathrooms are super challenging. Not to overstate it, but I think designing a kitchen cabinet is as difficult as designing a skyscraper. There are so many choices, it can become overwhelming.”* This could be a quote from any homeowner, but it happens to be Michael S. Smith— decorator to Cindy Crawford and Steven Spielberg—California native and author of Michael S. Smith Kitchen and Baths. He is not alone in this thinking. In 2011, Nisbet Brower, a 140-yearold regional company, engaged design experts and researchers to identify how to improve the process. “We wanted to address a need in Dayton, and to create a ‘smart’ experience that is energizing and inspirational. It was our goal to make it easier by looking at the process from the consumers’ perspective. It is our mission to give people all they need to Explore (21 featured displays),

Define (an Inspiration Wall to identify style preferences) and Design (designers to coach you every step of the way). We have learned people want highly functional rooms that reflect their personal style, and we aimed at making it happen,” explained Dan Brower, VP Retail Development of Lifestyle Kitchen Designs. The Research: Families are renovating these two important rooms to upgrade, often rather than sell, their homes. Based on extensive national and regional consumer research**, there is a need for an alternative to impersonal, big-box or expensive boutique designers. “Lifestyle exists to demystify the process of finding what you want for your kitchen or bath based on your lifestyle. Are you a foodie? Do you love to entertain? Are there multiple cooks in the kitchen? The trend is toward more functional spaces that address how you live…your lifestyle. Your kitch-

en should be a response to that. We believe great design is as much about problem-solving as it is looking good.” “A vital part of Lifestyle is for the community…a place where we invite the people to express themselves…to share cooking classes and wine tastings, to learn about design through workshops and seminars, and to enjoy seasonal celebrity events,” says Brower. Whether you have a small or large family, entertain often, use the kitchen as part office, or just want more out of the space you have, Lifestyle Kitchen Designs has been created to help you define and design to fit. Opening in late March 2012, Lifestyle Kitchen Designs is located in the Cross Pointe Centre. www.lifestylekitchendesigns.com Cross Pointe Centre, Centerville, OH 45459 *Elle Décor Magazine, September 2011 **Nielsen Research for Masco, 2010

Contemporary bathroom renovation is anything but cold

By Alison Bour Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

When Faye Ledwick moved into her current Centerville home, she left behind a life of antiques. She describes herself as once “extremely traditional”, but says that even though her period home gave her much pleasure—it was simply time for a change. continued >

Sleek accouterments After redecorating most of her home in contemporary styling, Faye’s master bathroom remained waiting for its own transformation. “I love the clean look. It makes you feel lighter,” she says about her new love of modern décor. “I had in mind going in that the bath would be ultra-contemporary.” So in early spring of last year, Richard White, owner of Centerville Building and Design, set out to find elements that would wow even a contemporary connoisseur like Faye. He called the former bathroom transitional traditional—an approach in between contemporary and New England-type traditional homes that’s used in many local subdivisions built in the last seven to 10 years. Faye’s pre-remodeled bath fundamentals included a mix of granite, glass vessel bowl sinks, dark brown, faux raised-panel cabinets, and neutral-colored 12x12-inch tile. “The flow of the room was good,” explains White. “It was mostly an issue of selections.” “I wanted the fixtures to look like pieces of art,” adds Faye. Finding Kohler’s Abrazo freestanding stark white tub with its bowl shape and slightly dipped edges was a good start. White remembered seeing it in a Chicago showroom. “Once Faye saw it, she had to have it,” he says. Getting the tub installed was another thing altogether. A new product by Kohler, the tub didn’t come with the instructions White needed to mount the tub filler faucet on a concrete slab. White hired a piano moving company just to tote the 525-pound structure into the house. The process of installation involved breaking open the floor and setting the valve on a small pad of concrete and bolting it down. Sand was placed around the valve and fittings to make any future access easy. “The tub drain line and valve had to be exactly the right height. It couldn’t be fixed later,” he says. White was relieved when that part of the redesign was completed. “It was a two-day project in itself. It kept me up at night.” continued >

Artistic elements The original bathroom included an oversized shower; something White felt was unnecessary. He opted to cut the walls of the shower down by about 24 inches. The area now serves as two showers in one: a main area with a standard Hansgrohe showerhead and a private sitting space with a built-in bench and a hand-held showerhead. “The shower is unbelievable and still offers plenty of space,” Faye says. “And I feel like I’m standing in a piece of art.” Although Faye planned to leave the original vanity and cabinets in place, as the space morphed further toward the ultimate in contemporary baths, White suggested floating cabinets to open up the space. Faye says she doesn’t regret making the change. The new cherry vanities feature Uba Tuba granite countertops and impressive Denovo vessel sink bowls. For the floor White suggested 24x24-inch non-rectified porcelain tile without rolled edges and atypical narrow grout lines. “These are more like cut stone, but they lay beautifully. They were a lot of fun to work with,” he says. White finished the space with warm halogen lighting. In many cases, this choice would be too bright, but the fixtures don’t sit shining straight down on the room. Instead the shaded fixtures angle light toward the ceiling as well as out the sides. “The light is almost royal purple or blue. It’s a neat effect,” says White. continued >

Comfortable atmosphere White grew up in what he calls “literally a glass house.” A California contemporary structure, it was cold and stark. While contemporary décor still allows for glass elements, he says in this area of the country it is typically represented by minimalistic elements. Faye praises White’s ability to combine his vision of contemporary with her ideas. In fact, he recently stopped by to visit Faye while in the neighborhood on another project. “I told him I love the bathroom as much today as the first time I walked into it. Even those who aren’t contemporary people are taken with it.”

My Artwork?

Art experts agree: when buying contemporary art for your home, you should buy what you love. But, as with life, how do you know if it’s true love or just a passing fancy? By Nina Kieffer

Your home is a labor of love. To create an environment that embodies your outlook on life, you sweat the details: flooring, wall and window treatments, lighting, furnishings, accessories, color schemes. But of all the objects that make a home a truly enjoyable and interesting space, nothing contributes more impact than original art. And contemporary art, with its immediacy and current perspectives, speaks volumes about the personality of a home and its inhabitants.

The sum of its parts Contemporary art is relevant to our lives, and generally has something to say beyond the visual elements of the work. Not that the visual elements aren’t important. What the work conveys visually impacts us as much as the message. An immediate visceral response, whether positive or negative, tells us much about how a work affects us on a subliminal level. We might not know what it is that we instantly love or dislike about a piece of art, but there are forces at work called the formal elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, space, mass and volume) and the principles of art (movement, emphasis, unity, harmony, variety, balance, contrast, proportion and repetition) that artists employ to influence the viewer’s observation of the work. Content (subject matter), style, and medium also interact with these visual cues, along with the artist’s intention and skill. Although knowledge of art theory isn’t necessary to look at art or even to appreciate it, experts agree that if you are going to buy art, you should educate yourself about it in order to help make intelligent purchasing decisions. You can’t invest too much time on homework and legwork.

Art school confidential The more art you take in, the more you will discover what kinds of art and artists appeal to you. A plethora of contemporary art venues exist in museums, art galleries, art fairs and temporary pop-up exhibits. Museums and art galleries work constantly to entice the public with events of all stripes: special exhibits, openings, artist meet and greets, lecture series, performances by musicians, dancers and other artists, socials, docent- and curator-led tours, trunk sales and more. When you travel out of town, make it a point to visit local museums and galleries. Analyze art that appeals to you. Take a moment to look carefully. What is going on in the artwork? What do you see that makes you think that? What aspects do you find interesting and/ or enjoyable? No observation is unimportant. Each is a valid response to the work. Looking at art that you don’t think you’ll like is another great way to develop and hone your tastes. What is it that you don’t like about it? Does it have any redeeming qualities in your eyes? What are they? Engaging with others while looking at art can be enlightening. It’s amazing what other people see. Listening to others’ perspectives can broaden your own. Share your art junkets with family and friends. You’ll learn something about yourself and them. Art history books are a good resource, and you can spend many a pleasurable hour browsing through the art section of your local bookstore and museum gift shop book selections. The continuum of art history is long, complex and interconnected. Developing a background in the evolution of art will help you to understand why and how art has come to be what it is today. Much art is a response, on a personal and historical level, to the art that has Photo by John Magor

come before it. There are also many books on the market that provide advice on buying contemporary art, for example “The Art of Buying Art: An Insider’s Guide to Collecting Contemporary Art” by Paige West, an avid collector who developed her passion into her own gallery, website and this practical book on what to collect, how to collect it and how to incorporate it into your home. Many museums have “Friends Groups” for museum members. These organizations are like clubs that organize events such as visiting private collections and artist studios, behind the scenes gallery tours with curators and other art experts, cultural outings to other art venues and more. It’s a great way to meet other art enthusiasts and develop those all-important contacts with those in the know. Art auctions are a fascinating way to educate yourself on what people are paying for art and what art is on the market in your locale. Many auction houses post results of past auctions on their websites, as well as pieces available for purchase in upcoming auctions. As you delve into experiencing art, you’ll learn to assess its qualities and become more comfortable discussing it with others. Your personal taste will become more manifest. You may already have inclinations and interests that you can now identify, quantify and justify.

Not just a pretty face But, what, you may ask, is contemporary art? Literally, contemporary means present-day, current. However, different organizations variously define contemporary art as art produced since World War II or the 1960s or 70s. The Cincinnati Art Museum pinpoints 1960 as its starting place for contemporary art, according to Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Jessica Flores. Flores notes that there is confusion among the public over the term. Many think contemporary is synonymous with modern, although modern art is generally considered to be art produced from the late 1800s through the 1970s that breaks with traditional art forms and techniques of the past. (Examples of modern art include Impressionism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism.) Art historian Marilyn Stokstad comments that by the 1970s, all the rules had been broken, signaling the end of an era. Because abstract art was such a high profile example of modern art that is still prevalent today, many people erroneously believe that abstract art and contemporary art are one in the same. Although abstract art can be contemporary, all contemporary art is not abstract. Some define contemporary art as any art that is produced by currently living artists, but a common thread running through much contemporary art is social consciousness, a connection to some social issue such as imperialism, global trade, feminism, AIDS awareness, etc. Flores believes that the value of contemporary art is diminished when it does not include an element of present day concerns and issues, which acts as a reflection of our current culture and the human condition. continued >

Eliminating buyer’s remorse Good art is always an investment, just like a major piece of furniture. Like any other investment for your home, you should always buy the best quality that you can afford. It’s also important to buy the best example of that type of work that you can, and to buy innovative rather than derivative works. Cultivate relationships with experts you can trust. Other collectors, art brokers, dealers, and curators all have unique perspectives and specialties. Reputation is important. An expert you trust can help school you in the ins and outs of buying art for the long term (it’s not an easily liquidated commodity) as well as recognizing art that is not just the latest fad, but can withstand the test of time. One of the beauties of purchasing contemporary art is that in many cases, you have access to the artists who created it. Getting to know living artists, discussing with them their motivation, techniques, history and artistic struggles will help you develop a meaningful affinity for particular artists and their work. It is entertaining to get online and read about what is happening in the world of the art glitterati—who is Charles Saatchi insulting now? What outrageous prices are being paid for high profile works of art? And although the Internet is useful for many

of the tasks involved in purchasing art, like keeping you apprised of events, reading pertinent blogs and visiting websites of museums, galleries and artists, most experts advise that you only purchase art that you have seen up close and in person. Importantly, you don’t have to be a millionaire to buy good art. Collecting art used to be the province of the wealthy, but today art galleries abound, as do talented artists creating exceptional, unique artwork. Art that speaks to you and is in your budget exists and is readily available. Art buying is dependent upon other personal factors such as the size and style of your home. Some galleries will bring art to your home so you can see it in your native environment. Some also have programs for trusted clientele that include installing a potential purchase in your home for a period of time to make sure it is a good fit for you. If you arm yourself with research, knowledge, experience, exposure and trusted advisers, it will aid you in your quest to recognize and acquire the art that you truly love, and surround yourself with, for years to come.

The

stories

we tell

Jane A. Black, Associate Director of the Dayton Art Institute, is an art enthusiast of the first order. An artist herself (in printmaking, painting and fiber art) her affinity for art runs deep. She speaks eloquently of the power of art and its ability to take us places we don’t normally go in our everyday lives. She believes that like the movies, art evokes the willing suspension of disbelief and is a testament to the creativity of the human mind. Black states that the more art you look at, the more your definition of art will expand, broadening your eye, mind and taste. She says that people are sometimes surprised at how their understanding of enigmatic concepts and abstruse art blossoms as they commit time and energy to the process of educating themselves. And Black notes that contemporary art is not always esoteric and difficult to understand, as some erroneously believe.

Our fast-paced culture encourages us to take a surface view of art, from the perspective of the sound bite and the bullet point. Really looking at art offers us the opportunity to slow down, contemplate, integrate and experience the powerful messages intrinsic to art. According to Black, one of the advantages of contemporary art is its accessibility. The number of working artists, galleries and other art venues provide collectors with many opportunities for exposure to both the art and the artist. Also, she feels that original art in your home contributes a unique, living presence to your environment. Original art viewed repeatedly doesn’t lose its luster the way that reproductions can. Our adventures in art are incorporated into our life stories. In addition, every piece of art one acquires has its own story to tell. These stories enhance and define our lives, especially when shared with others. Black invites art adventurers to visit the Dayton Art Institute and experience its collection of contemporary artwork. From May 24-June 17, Changing Landscapes: Contemporary Chinese Fiber Art will be on display. The exhibit portrays how three generations of contemporary fiber artists are “documenting, navigating, and responding to the tremendous economic, political, and social changes that have transformed China over the past decade.”

California Dreamin’ West coast serves as inspiration for backyard renovation By Alison Bour Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

A native of California, Karan Peare misses the sights, sounds and feeling of open air she experienced sitting on a beach near the ocean. F So when she and her husband, Rick, decided to overhaul their Clayton home’s back patio and yard, she aimed to get as much of that back as she could. “This is as close as I could get to the beach,” she says about her new patio and seating area near a pond on their property. continued >

Fun in the sun She and Rick weren’t interested in a threeseason room, or even a covered patio. “I wanted the sun and I wanted the breezes,” says Karan. “Plus, I’ve never seen a roofed patio that I liked.” Although the Peares have lived in their home for 16 years, they hadn’t touched the patio in a long time, except to establish a small, 10x12-foot concrete slab. The Peares hired New Carlisle-based The Site Group to create their version of an outdoor respite. Ben Bayer, who works in both design and sales, spearheaded the project.

His first order of business was installing California-style, lilac flagstone pavers. These offer both the stability and design elements needed to create a contemporary outdoor setting. He also created brick steps leading down from the house exit. Bayer then suggested a cedar pergola with a rough-sawn texture. Traditionally, a pergola was often used as an overhead trellis for ivy. However, Bayer says that use is less common. “Most people hang stuff from them. As the sun moves, the slats provide shade, and we can sometimes add more slats for additional shade.”

But, Karan and Rick were more concerned with design and usage than they were shade since a large tree sits nearby the patio and offers comfort, especially in the afternoon hours when the couple and their guests are more likely to be using the structure. The slat arrangements still allow the Peares to grow plants and flowers since the patio gets morning and noon light. “We really like the pergola and the stone work,” Rick says. “Because it isn’t too polished.” continued >

A stone band cut into the grass mimics the angled design of the home’s roofline.

Angled design The two main lines of the roof come together in an angle and some beams jut out, so Bayer created a stone band through the grass with the same radius. Additional walkways—that pick up off the curve of the L-shape—lead out in both directions, complementing the straight lines of the rest of the design. The Site Group also suggested a seating area near the pond at the edge of the property, a completely open space where Karan can enjoy the sun and the cool breezes coming off the water.

This area mirrors the strong, clean lines and triangle accent of the main structure and is accented by a fire pit, as well as grasses and other similar plant materials. Karan is now on a quest to find the perfect teak furniture to adorn the outdoor space. “A few chaise lounges and a small table by the fire pit would be nice,” she says. “I’d like to place an outdoor living room set under the pergola.” The Peares also have plans to install an outdoor cooking space complete with a large grill.

The overall goals were simple, but the result was just what the Peares ordered. “It’s just nice to sit outside after dinner,” Rick says. “We’ve received nothing but praise about it from our friends and neighbors.”

HOMEOWNER

TIP NO. 02 selecting and maintaining your water heater

Most homeowners don’t give a second thought to their water heater—until the hot water stops flowing. Here’s what you need to know when selecting a new one and maintaining the one you have. Storage tank water heaters have an insulated tank where water is heated and stored until it’s needed. They’re available in electric, propane and natural gas models. • Tank size is an important consideration. Base your decision on household size. One to two people will need a 30-gallon tank. Three to four people will use a 40- to 50-gallon tank. • Also think about the recovery rate — the number of gallons of water the water heater can heat in an hour. The greater your demand for hot water, the higher recovery rate you need. • Know the dimensions of the space where your water heater will be stored and ensure that the one you want will fit. Tankless, or on-demand, heats water as it passes through a series of coils in the unit instead of storing it. • These units only heat water as you use it, so they are usually more energy-efficient than a traditional storage tank water heater. • They’re available in electric, LP and natural gas models. • Most tankless units can provide up to 3.5 gallons of heated water per minute. They are best for homes that demand only one or two areas of water use at one time, say the shower and the dishwasher or the kitchen sink and the washing machine.

Energy-efficiency Whichever fuel source you use, a water heater can be the third largest energy user in your home, so you’ll want a unit that offers energy and cost savings. Research the energy-efficiency and yearly operating costs of a water heater before you decide which one is right for your needs. You can find this info listed clearly on the Energy Star label. Maintenance tips Many new water heaters come with a self-cleaning feature that automatically fights lime and sediment build-up to lengthen tank life and maintain peak efficiency for a longer period of time. As water is pumped into your water heater tank, sediments settle on the bottom. Depending on the water quality, these materials can rob your water heater’s efficiency. If left unchecked, they can not only make your water heater work harder but also allow your tank to rust and slowly be corroded until you need to replace the entire unit.
