I am a gardener’s daughter—minus the talent. I have been surrounded by beautiful flower beds, planters and vegetable gardens my entire life. My mom did her best to teach me to pick green beans, deadhead snapdragons and prune rose bushes, all of which I still know how to do today. I recall the beautiful clematis creeping up the pillar on our front porch and the daffodils that would pop up under our living room windows in the early spring. I also recall the joy it brought her to head out into the yard and get her hands dirty in the soil. While I wasn’t blessed with her green thumb, I have managed to create a few landscaping beds around my home and I tend to a handful of tomato and cucumber plants each year. To this day, she compliments my efforts so I don’t think she’s too disappointed. So, when I met Barbara Eichert I immediately recognized that passion and love she has for her garden. Like me, she also learned this fine art form from her mother. Unlike me, she has created one of the most breathtaking English gardens I have ever seen. I’m resigned to the fact that I’ll never be the ultimate gardener, and that’s okay. Maybe my true calling is introducing you to some of the wonderfully talented gardeners living in the Greater Miami Valley. I hope you enjoy reading their stories as much as I enjoyed meeting them. Sincerely,

could be aid that the easons of Barbara Eichert’s life have been carefully marked by each garden he has created. F Her love for the earth began at the Kansas farm where he grew up as a child. There alongside her mom she learned how to grow vegetables and enjoy the fruits of her labor by preparing foods such as canned pickles. She took her love for gardening with her and as an adult adorned each home she lived in with its own unique outdoor space. continued >

Form and function Over the decades she has transformed ordinary backyard spaces into exquisite masterpieces. The time she poured into each piece of land gave her something back in its own way. Underneath the symphony of blooms, Barbara has always found solace and joy in the layers of ordinary dirt. Hours of digging have allowed her to reflect and sometimes heal. It’s a love that she feels blessed to share with her husband, Dr. Stephen Eichert. Perhaps that is why the couple went to great lengths to design their newest garden that has transformed the back yard of their Washington Township home. Barbara had done so many different designs over the decades including cottage, French and oriental gardens. This time, she and her husband
were ready for something more formal. “We are both very symmetrical and like discipline,” Barbara says about their choice to build an English garden. “And because of the space of our yard, we also wanted something that would be very intimate.” The couple put their vision in motion by digging the first hole in the back yard themselves and planting an herb garden. However, they knew enough to realize they would need an expert to help them formulate a bigger plan. They hired local landscaper Tony Carpenter to craft plans for three main areas including the original herb garden, a sculpture garden and a lawn area. A main path was created down the center of the yard from continued >

which three different access points were placed to lead to other areas of the yard. The paths not only lead to different parts of the garden, but also offer intimate sitting areas and spectacular angles where one can view the garden. An English garden is not something typically found in the Dayton market, which is one reason Carpenter was so thrilled to be given the job. Another reason is that Carpenter also had the opportunity to put some of his experience in England to work. “I have spent time in Europe and have seen formal gardens that have been there for hundreds of years,” Carpenter says. “I was able to give them what they wanted because I had walked through gardens like that. The reason this garden works is due to the details. All the lines are straight and perpendicular and very exact. If they are off ever so slightly you will see it.” Everything in the garden plays an integral part in the overall design. More than 250 boxwoods create noticeable edges along the garden’s back space while four smaller divisions among the smallest herb patches help lend to the larger feeling of formality
and balance. The garden’s pathways, one of the more unusual details, were designed by Carpenter to closely mimic the gardens he saw while in England. True English gardens have crushed granite for their gravel pathways. Carpenter created his own formula when he was unable to find a similar product. He was able to create a mirror image of an authentic English garden by using slate chips. “When it rains (the pathway) looks like moving water,” Barbara says. “It is beautiful.” It took two years to create the garden, but its space continues to evolve. The Eicherts are continually reshaping, relocating and retuning the finer details. Each year, Barbara plants more than 1,400 impatiens in the beds, while perennials that were planted years ago—such as the tree peonies—are now showing their true blooms for the first time. continued >
OPPOSITE TOP: A pair of rabbit topiaries, stuffed with moss and soil, adds whimsy to this garden. BOTTOM LEFT TO RIGHT: The herb garden was the first garden the homeowners planted when they moved into the house. Elegant iron carvings add a touch of formality. Small signs mark the different varieties of herbs and create character in the garden. Animal statues can be found tucked into flower beds throughout the garden. Elegance and dimension The couple has become known as fine collectors for their garden as well. Antique pieces are tucked in every corner of the garden, creating dimension among the various plants and flowers. Window guards from an old church now hang underneath their deck. The glass Barbara installed inside of the guards makes it seem as if one is peering into another garden. The cobblestones in the herb garden were repurposed from the streets of Cincinnati. A four-foot solid bronze light fixture that once hung from a church in Missouri was purchased by the couple as a wedding gift to each other, and now is the home to a rose bush and winter gem. A Belgian artist created a pair of nine and four-foot rabbit frames for the Eicherts’ fourth anniversary. The rabbits, now stuffed with moss and soil, bring life to the garden. Over the years, the garden has also grown from three spaces to nearly 10 intimate themed areas. Last summer, the couple brought in Jim Teske and Centerville Landscaping to help with some new additions including one of the garden’s two fountains. This one, which is also the largest, sits in the garden’s green area. Four large antique columns were also placed along the green area to create a wall. The flower baskets perched on top draw the eye upward and tie in the salmon color seen in flowers across the garden. “Their garden is so exquisite, it is the real deal,” Teske says. “The detail alone is astounding. Barbara has poured her heart and soul into this garden.” continued >

MIDDLE LEFT: The deck offers a bird’s eye view of the garden below. The impressive English garden might seem complete when viewed by an outsider. But to the Eicherts, it is just the beginning. If there is anything they have learned over the years, it’s that the creation of a garden merely lays the foundation for future ideas to take root. And this one is certainly no exception. ABOVE: A “Mrs. Powers” gate provides separation between the herb garden and sculpture garden. BELOW: A bronze statue depicting a boy and swan takes center stage in the formal English garden. Five years ago
a Frank Lloyd Wright-style home in one of Kettering’s upscale
neighborhoods received a second chance at life when an ambitious couple bought it. | The exterior of the home, originally built in the 1970s, had fallen far from the care of a diligent homeowner in recent years. The back yard had become overgrown with long scraggly trees competing with each other for pockets of sunlight, while weeds encroached upon the in-ground swimming pool.
A modern vision The new homeowners knew that great potential lay beneath it all. Each spring, they’d head outdoors and do their best to cut back honeysuckle and trim dead limbs. After four years, however, they realized they needed a professional plan to finally bring the space back to life. The couple knew exactly what they wanted. They dreamed of a space with sharp, clean lines that mirrored the contemporary feel they had given their home’s interior. But they began to wonder if finding a designer who could appreciate such a look would be as difficult to find as the pool that still sat beneath their yard’s brush. “I would tell (designers) that we wanted modern, clean and straight lines,” the homeowner says. “But what they would come back to us with every time were big, curvy lines that were more traditional.” Finally, the homeowners were connected with Dwight Goodin and Columbusbased Paver Planet and their entire outlook changed. “Dwight got it and hit it right on the nose,” she says. “We were speechless. It was perfect.” Paver Planet is a small, specialized business that gravitates toward contemporary styles. A new design was drawn up for the back yard, and once approved, the difficult part of creating a clean slate to start from began. The first phase included removing the home’s original deck, which had been useless for entertaining since it sat an entire story above the pool area. Next, the overgrown brush and about 20 large trees were removed to provide 30 additional feet of space to the yard. continued >

Fluid design The homeowners had originally wanted stamped concrete for their new patio area surrounding the pool, but changed their minds after seeing the varying sizes of available pavers. They settled on Unilock’s Umbriano Winter Marvel paver. This paver—a 24-inch square weighing 127 pounds—is unlike most traditional pavers. Once laid down, the pavers meet seamlessly, making the 2,200-square-foot patio area appear as one piece. The paver’s pulverized granite surface also gives it a unique look. “It looks like a frosty covering of snow and it sparkles in the sunlight,” Goodin says. Jeremy and Jacob Bihn, owners of Paver Planet, personally did all the work on the patio, including the angular waterfall that has become the homeowner’s favorite feature. The waterfall pulls the yard’s retaining walls together, acting as a small, soft stream that continually flows to the side. The retaining walls were created from a Unilock Pisa natural color concrete, while limestone was used on the steps and wall caps. Mexican river pebbles, shaped like shiny flat eggs, fill bed areas. One of the most beautiful touches are the blue tumbled chunks of glass placed down the water feature that light up after the sun goes down. While the new hardscape design would give the contemporary feel the homeowners wanted, its landscape would offer the right amount of softness needed to balance it. New Carlisle-based Studebaker Nurseries was used to help choose the right plants. The homeowners spent two hours driving one day around the nursery’s 1,800 acres looking at plants and trees in their natural environment. In the end, a variety of species were chosen to bring blooms and color in nearly every season. Different trees—such as the Holmford, Crabapple and Canada Red Choke Cherry trees—provide six weeks of flowering during the spring. Those are followed by a colorful appearance from hydrangea and TOP: The water feature includes a line of blue glass that glistens in the sun. ABOVE: Outdoor lighting accentuates the waterfall and steps.

rose bushes, which bud all summer along the patio.
A place to unwind The back yard, which once lay hidden from sight, is now an open space for gathering and entertainment. It’s an extension of the homeowners’ living space. The homeowners often swim twice a day in the summer and unwind outdoors after coming home from a game of tennis. And for the first time in years, they have had a proper backdrop to hold their annual Fourth of July party. “Every year, we bring in a local entertainer and we finally have a spot for him,” the homeowner says. “Before, we would have to create a little space among the mulch. But now it’s very professional looking.”

time to throw open the windows and pull our patio furniture out of the dark corners of our basements. We’re ready to linger over a meal with friends while lights twinkle in nearby trees. Food tastes better outside. Friends like to linger. And children have plenty of space to burn off some stored-up energy. F You don’t need a reason to celebrate al fresco, but in case you are planning for one of the biggies coming up in the next few months, we’ve got some looks, tips and recipes you just might want to try.

Memorial Day
This kick-off to summer is usually about casual days spent pool side, boating on the lake or picnicking in the park. Consider changing gears and hosting a formal lawn party with a theme such as the Indy 500 with its black and white checkered flag as the launching point for your table settings.
decorating trends
Go with the flow How about preparing a beverage or cocktail relevant to the party’s theme? Give it a funny name or have the color play into the theme. For example, a bright yellow “Caution Flag” made using a traditional lemon drop martini recipe.
Use the good stuff Your china will survive and thrive in its new outdoor setting. Simple white plates are especially nice as a starting point—you can take the color and theme in almost any direction.
Best guess for guests When estimating for hors d’oeuvres, plan on 12 bites per hour per person. So for a three-hour party, you’ll need 36 appetizers per person—perhaps six each of six selections. Father’s Day
Celebrated the third Sunday of June, Father’s Day often means giving Dad some time to flop on a hammock or click the remote control to his heart’s content from his favorite chair. But the man has to eat at some point—so make the meal by adding a few fun touches.
Ties that bind Add a whimsical punch to the tablescape by placing a tie instead of a napkin beneath the silverware, perhaps placing Dad’s least favorites near the spillers in the family. Suggest all guests—even the women and children—wear a loosely knotted tie to dinner.
Float his boat Give dad an old-fashioned summer treat. Fill a glass with orange soda, top the side of the glass with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream for an orange cream float treat that will take him back a few years. Father’s Day and Fourth of July photos by Ross Van Pelt

Fourth of July
You can’t possibly be too patriotic on the 4th of July. Decorate with American flags and red, white and blue balloons, flowers, vases, tablecloths and tableware. Since your party will most likely be an outdoor affair under the stars and the fireworks, your decorations should also sparkle and shimmer.

Drawn to the flame: Use candles to light the night and add a touch of romance. Hurricane lanterns are perfect to keep the flame alive under breezy conditions and in a clever grouping they can double as centerpieces.
Feeling hot, hot, not: If you have electricity outside, plug in a portable oscillating fan or two to keep guests cool and to help keep bugs at bay.
The kids are all right: If young ones will be a part of the festivities, plan creative ways to keep them entertained. A table just for the kids is a good idea; cover it with white butcher paper and have crayons available so they can draw to their hearts’ content. continued >

More and more homeowners are looking to the back yard as a way to add extra square footage. In fact, updating or adding an outdoor living space was considered one of the top home improvement projects of 2011. From spacious patios and decks to outdoor kitchens and dining areas, the possibilities are virtually endless. F When Dr. Thomas and Andrea Rak moved into their Springfield home back in 2010, they had every intention of renovating the back yard. After making a few interior improvements, their attention turned to the outdoor space behind the house. “We purchased this home because of its great location,” Andrea says. “Plus, it sits on four wooded acres, which is something you don’t find so close to the city. We knew we wanted to take advantage of the private back yard.” continued >

A strong, colorful base The house already had a large deck off the kitchen, which overlooked a massive standard gray concrete patio. While the patio wasn’t pleasing to the eye, for Andrea, it was a starting-off point. “Some companies I met with suggested demolishing it,” she recalls. “But the patio was very solid, with only a few surface cracks. I wanted to utilize what was there rather than start from scratch.” She brought in Jason Schell, president of Custom Outdoor Structures, to help her transform the bland patio into a usable outdoor living space. Schell and his team covered the patio with a concrete overlay to add color and texture. “We used a polyaspartic coating that is very similar to an epoxy, but it is much more durable,” Schell explains. “The overlay actually strengthens the concrete.” The overlay also gives Schell the freedom to create any shape, color or texture a homeowner desires. The Raks’ patio features neutral earth-toned hues with a dark brown border.
Dining by candlelight In addition to sprucing up the look of the patio, Andrea imagined adding a few additional elements to the space. “I wanted to incorporate a fire feature in the back yard, but our son Alex is six years old, so I wanted to make sure it was also safe.” Since the Raks intended to use the patio to entertain friends and family, Schell suggested combining the fire feature with a dining table. The end result is a custommade, curved concrete fire pit with an attached table. Schell topped the structure with a copper-toned liquid metal counter. To accentuate the fire table, Schell added a sunburst design to the patio. “The sunburst was hand-carved and textured. It features a reflector enhancer, where pieces of metal are actually mixed into the sealer to give it a metallic look,” he explains.
Made in the shade Another element is the custom lean-to, which houses an outdoor bar and provides some much-needed relief from the relentless sun. The lean-to features a copper roof and decorative concrete carved to look like stone. “There aren’t any limits when it comes to what you can do with concrete,” Schell says. “When you want to do something artistic outside, decorative concrete opens up a whole new world.” The bar features the same decorative stone base and, when guests look closely, they’ll find a few extra details including Alex’s initial, a peace symbol and a heart, among other items. “It’s almost continued >

like “Where’s Waldo”—you never know what you’ll come across,” Andrea laughs. A broom finish on the bar floor gives the concrete a wood grain look, while the liquid metal countertop, in dark gunmetal gray, completes the unique design. “I really enjoy the artistic side of carving the concrete,” Schell says. “I attribute this to my mother, she was an amazing painter and my inspiration when it comes to designing projects like this.”
Hot spots A lower patio provides direct access to an indoor pool, one of the highlights of the house. “We spend a lot of time in here,” Andrea says. “It’s the perfect place for both adults and children to have fun and relax.” The Raks were just returning from vacation when construction started on the patio last fall. Andrea says Thomas and Alex spent hours playing on a large chessboard at the resort. “When we came home, Jason wanted to know if we had any ideas for the lower patio and I automatically thought it would be a great addition.” Schell carved the oversized chessboard into the patio and applied the same metallic reflector used to create the sunburst. With summer right around the corner, the Raks say they’re excited to host their first official barbeque in their new back yard. “I want this to be a place where our friends and family, especially our son, can gather together and have fun. We can’t wait to have a back yard filled with people.”

HOMEOWNER
TIP NO. 03 HOW TO SELECT A REMODELING CONTRACTOR Timing and money are the most common questions a home improvement contractor hears. While a reasonable timetable and budget is important, it shouldn’t be the primary focus of an interview or a job. Homeowners should also focus on trust and quality. Start by asking questions about a company’s business practices and experience in a similar type of project. If you decide you want to hire a particular remodeling contractor, then you can discuss when he or she can start, what time he or she can knock on your door each morning and when you will have your home to yourselves again. Here are some questions NARI members recommend you ask before signing a remodeling contract: UÊÊ ÜÊ }Ê >ÛiÊÞ ÕÊLii Ê ÊLÕà iÃö UÊÊ7 ÊÜ ÊLiÊ>Ãà } i`Ê>ÃÊ«À iVÌÊÃÕ«iÀÛ Ã ÀÊv ÀÊÌ iÊ L¶ UÊÊ7 ÊÜ ÊLiÊÜ À }Ê ÊÌ iÊ«À iVÌ¶Ê ÀiÊÌ iÞÊi « ÞiiÃÊ ÀÊÃÕLV ÌÀ>VÌ Àö UÊÊÊ iÃÊ Þ ÕÀÊ V «> ÞÊ V>ÀÀÞÊ Ü À iÀÃÊ V «i Ã>Ì Ê > `Ê >L ÌÞÊ ÃÕÀ> Vi¶Ê Ü>ÞÃÊ ÛiÀ vÞÊ Ì ÃÊ v À >Ì Ê LÞÊ calling the agency. A copy of an insurance certificate does not let you know if the policy is still current. Even if the certificate has an expiration date you cannot tell if the insurance has been canceled by either party. If licensing is required in your state also ask if the contractor is licensed and call to verify compliance with the law. Not all states offer or require licensing. Check with your local or state government agencies.) UÊÊ7 >ÌÊ ÃÊÞ ÕÀÊ>««À >V ÊÌ Ê>Ê«À iVÌÊÃÕV Ê>ÃÊÌ Ã¶ UÊÊ ÜÊ > ÞÊ«À iVÌÃÊ iÊ iÊ >ÛiÊÞ ÕÊV « iÌi`Ê ÊÌ iÊ «>ÃÌÊÞi>À¶ UÊÊ >ÞÊ Ê >ÛiÊ>Ê ÃÌÊ vÊÀiviÀi ViÃÊvÀ ÊÌ ÃiÊ«À iVÌö UÊÊ >ÞÊ Ê >ÛiÊ>Ê ÃÌÊ vÊLÕà iÃÃÊÀiviÀÀ> ÃÊ ÀÊÃÕ«« iÀö UÊÊ7 >ÌÊ «iÀVi Ì>}iÊ vÊ Þ ÕÀÊ LÕà iÃÃÊ ÃÊ Ài«i>ÌÊ ÀÊ ÀiviÀÀ> Ê LÕà iÃö
UÊÊ ÀiÊÞ ÕÊ>Ê i LiÀÊ vÊ>Ê >Ì > ÊÌÀ>`iÊ>Ãà V >Ì ¶ UÊÊ >ÛiÊÞ ÕÊ ÀÊÞ ÕÀÊi « ÞiiÃÊLii ÊViÀÌ v i`Ê ÊÀi `i }Ê or had any special training or education, such as earning >Ê iÀÌ v i`Ê,i `i iÀÊ ,®]Ê iÀÌ v i`Ê,i `i iÀÊ-«iV > ÃÌÊ ,-®Ê ÀÊ iÀÌ v i`Ê i>`Ê >À«i ÌiÀÊ ®Ê ÀÊ iÀÌ v i`Ê ÌV i ÊEÊ >Ì Ê,i `i iÀÊ ,®Ê`ià } >Ì ¶ It’s also important to realize that sometimes it’s not the answers you get that are significant, but what you don’t get. Asking the right questions is not enough. You need to pay attention to your instincts and to what information is missing. Unlike your accountant or stockbroker, your remodeler will be a part of your daily life and available for some onthe-job education. He or she will be privy to your personal life, more so than your doctor or lawyer. Your contractor will know how you look early in the morning and how well behaved your dog is. It makes sense that you should take some time to carefully select this person and make sure that it is someone to whom you can ask questions. Remodeling can be a fun experience. You get to create your dream room or home and learn a little about design and building along the way. All you need to do is ask questions. Questions that, according to NARI members, remodelers don’t feel they are getting enough of. So tap into your curiosity and ask away.
