Part of the fun of the holidays is the preparation and anticipation leading up to the big day. We all have our own special traditions. While I love to decorate, I enjoy my family’s annual Christmas Eve tradition the most. We all get together for the evening, filling the house with laughter and the aroma of delicious food. For me, those few hours reaffirm the true meaning of the holidays. Our editor, Christina Kleiner, says she can’t resist popping National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation into the DVD player while she’s decorating her house for the holidays. She watches it a second time when she bakes Christmas cookies with her mom and sister. This issue is all about family traditions. Dr. Reeder and his family mark the start of the holidays by handpicking their Christmas tree, while Mike Mattevi and Mike Rogers spend the two months before the holidays putting together their intricate gingerbread house. Season of Giving A Centerville treasure comes to life during the holidays By Julie Thompson | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging Whether Dr. Christopher Reeder and his wife, Michelle realize it or not, their notable property in Centerville often marks the beginning of the holiday season for many in the area. â&#x153;Ś Motorists who frequently travel to the busy four-way stop just below their property often marvel at the large yellow windmill that stands there. Many are curious about who lives inside and if the windmill even works. But all that curiosity fades when the windmill comes to life in early December with a festive wreath and beautiful white lights.

A festive interior What most don’t see, however, is the transformation that is also taking place inside the historic home on the hill. Inside, Michelle spends several days changing the usual décor into a Christmas wonderland. Decorations that have been in the family for at least a decade are placed in their traditional spots, while new ones are added to increase the warmth of the season. This decorating is a ritual Michelle has been doing for years and one that has clearly marked the start of the holiday season for the family of six. The decorating takes place every year sometime after Michelle’s birthday celebration in November and before her husband’s annual work Christmas party in early December. Michelle usually recruits the help of a friend who has a flair for interior design and they spend hours reworking lights, bows, faux presents and greenery around the home. “It’s kind of nice because it forces me to get everything done before the season starts and then I can relax and just enjoy it,” she says. The home’s living room is where Christmas traditions come to life most. It’s here where the family displays the tree they cut down together at a local farm. “It’s our family tradition,” explains Dr. Reeder. “Each year we go to the tree farm, usually on a Friday after school, cut down a tree, and decorate it that weekend, as a family.” The tree, which often stands up to nine feet tall, is filled with homemade ornaments and topped with an angel. It’s this tree under which Michelle places the manger her mom passed down to her and on Christmas morning places all the children’s presents. continued >

Candles, greenery and ribbon paint the room in hues of red, gold and green, and one of the home’s seven fireplaces spreads warmth and light from the wood burning inside. It’s a room that often draws the family together. “We spend a lot of time in this room,” Michelle says. “It’s where we open our presents and where my husband often plays the piano and we sing carols.”
Holiday traditions The dining room is also an important gathering room for the holidays. It’s where the Reeders host Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners to extended family who come to visit. While the visitors may change each year, the menu is always the same. Michelle cooks beef tenderloin on Christmas Eve and a traditional turkey dinner on Christmas Day. It may seem like a large undertaking, but Michelle says it never seems that way. In fact, it is something she looks forward to each year since her mom joins her in the kitchen to cook. continued >

The dining room carries the same colors over from the living room but utilizes different decorations. Gold is seen in the chargers sitting under the holly china settings and also in the soft fabric tied around the backs of the chairs. Red is sprinkled in the greenery centerpiece and on the mantel, and a seven-foot artificial tree stands in front of the window decorated with white poinsettias, gold gift boxes and glass ornaments. “I love gathering for dinner in the dining room, this is where that spectacular view of the property comes into play,” says Dr. Reeder. The family’s third Christmas tree stands in the family room. The nine-foot Frasier fir is artificial, but doesn’t appear that way. It’s on this tree that Michelle likes to create a theme, which often changes every couple of years. Over the years, popcorn strands, pine cones and bows have been among the things she has used to decorate. Most recently, she has created a woodland theme with birds, snowflakes and twigs appearing on the top.

A mix of red and green She may not be able to haul in three live trees for the home, but she does make it a priority to purchase several large red poinsettia plants to disperse throughout the main level. The flowers are a favorite of Michelle’s because they bring so much color and life to the season and last long after Christmas comes to a close. One other element that Michelle puts a lot of time and thought into is the home’s main banister, which stretches from the main floor to the upper level. Greenery is tied with large bows and decorated with small touches like gold gift-wrapped packages. The banister takes visitors to the bedrooms above, which are also decorated in their own unique ways. Though Michelle may have authority over the Christmas décor on the main level, she lets their four children make their own choices as to what goes up in their rooms. “This has been a great house to raise our family,” says Dr. Reeder. “It’s our goal to keep this house for the next 50 years. Hopefully, one of the children will want to raise their families in it.” continued >

The decorating may be what people first see when they enter the home, but it’s the little things the family does that really makes the season feel like Christmas. Baking Christmas cookies, watching holiday movies and reading favorite seasonal stories is what marks the holidays for this family every year—regardless of how old their teenage children get. Add sugar until well blended. Add room temperature eggs one at a time to incorporate, scraping down the sides of bowl frequently. Add vanilla. Measure flour before sifting. Then sift dry ingredients together in a bowl and add to butter, sugar and egg mixture, alternating with sour cream. Then beat batter for ten minutes on medium speed. Bake for 1 hour at 350°F. Makes three one-pound loaf pan pound cakes. After cakes are cool, dust tops with powdered sugar. Great variations: Cranberry Tangerine Pound Cake: Add zest of 1 orange, ½ teaspoon of tangerine oil (this is optional) and 1½ half cups of fresh or 1 cup of dried cranberries to the recipe after it is beaten. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease Bundt pan with butter. Sift together flour, sugar, poppy seeds, salt, baking soda and baking powder in large mixer bowl. Whisk together butter, buttermilk, eggs, lemon zest and vanilla in small bowl. Beat egg mixture into dry ingredients until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan and place in center of oven. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until knife inserted into center of cake comes out clean. Remove cake from oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes before turning out onto cooling rack. Meanwhile, combine powdered sugar
and lemon juice with a whisk. Pour over warm inverted cake. Allow to cool before serving.
SNOwMAN CAKE POPS 1 box of white cake mix 1 16-ounce can white frosting 2 pounds white candy melts 20 lollipop sticks 1 box fruit roll-ups edible ink markers black candy writer carrot sprinkles red m&ms Cook cake as directed on box and cool completely, trim off sides and bottom (they tend to discolor the white balls) and crumble into large bowl. Mix crumbles thoroughly with a little less than ½ can frosting, with a large spoon or your hands. Should be the texture of play-doh when completely mixed together. Add more frosting if necessary. Roll mixture into quarter-size balls and place on wax paper-covered cookie sheet. For the snowman heads, roll balls slightly smaller than the body. BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE TART WITH RASPBERRIES 10.6 ounces Green & Black’s Organic Baking Chocolate, finely chopped 1 cup heavy cream ⅔ cup lowfat milk 1 large egg and 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon sea salt 1 pre-baked 10-inch sweet tart shell 2 cups whipped cream 1 pint fresh raspberries
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place chopped chocolate in a large metal bowl over a simmering saucepan of water to start melting. Meanwhile, heat cream and milk until hot but not boiling. Whisk hot milk mixture into melting chocolate until all chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from heat and set aside. In another large bowl, whisk together eggs, vanilla and salt then continue to whisk as you gradually add the chocolate mixture. Pour filling into prepared crust. Bake tart until filling is almost set in center about 20 minutes. It will firm up more after coming out of the oven. Transfer to rack and let cool 15 minutes. Remove outer ring of pan and serve tart warm with whipped cream and fresh raspberries.

Show Worthy Designers’ Show House preserves Knoop family history By Christina Kleiner | Photos by Justine Bledsoe Tucked along State Route 41 just outside of Troy sits an old Victorian-style farmhouse that dates back to the late 1800s. The Knoop family built the home in 1883. Thanks to a trust set up by the family, the Miami County Park District purchased the house and 173 acres it sits on in 2006. F Three years ago, the Dayton Society of Interior Designers approached the park district about joining forces to refurbish the historic home to its former glory as part of a designers’ show house fundraiser. The doors to the Knoop house on Lost Creek Reserve were opened to the public in the fall. Proceeds from the event help support the upkeep of the property, which now serves as offices for the Miami County Park District. It’s amazing what a little teamwork can accomplish. continued >

East Front and Back Porch Laura Weimer says she envisioned someone relaxing on a swing with a warm mug of hot cider on a cool autumn evening when she set out to turn this small porch into a secret getaway. Weimer, principal designer and owner of Laura Weimer Interior Design, placed two quaint swings facing each other, with soft cushions and pillows in rich green, purple and brown hues. She painted a patterned “rug” on the concrete floor to tie the entire space together.

Main Front Porch The front porch sets the tone for all who enter the house. Anne Rettig, owner of Anne Rettig Designs, says her goal was to create an inviting space for anyone coming to visit the Knoop offices of the Miami County Park District. “Those who work at the office should also enjoy the view as they eat lunch,” she adds. Old wicker furnishings topped with fern-printed cushions blend in with the natural surroundings.

Front Parlor Randy Luken, of Luken Interiors, and Judy Duwel of Design Concepts, teamed up to design the front parlor. Their biggest challenge was designing around the four doors providing access to the room. Since the room is just off the foyer, Luken and Duwel created a charming spot where guests can relax before moving into the dining room. They also imagined the room could double for a comfortable study area.

Kitchen Sharon Bledsoe, owner of Sharon Bledsoe Designs, says her goal was to create an environmentally friendly kitchen while keeping the farmhouse look alive. The original cherry cabinets, made from trees on the property, were cleaned up and enhanced with new hardware. The new countertops are made from 75% recycled materials and the floor is comprised of a modern version of linoleum, made of wood, cork and linseed oil.

Nursery Shelly Replogle, owner of Studio 1210, transformed this room into a cheerful nursery for the show house. Soft yellow walls and elegant white furniture let the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s traditional character shine through. Replogle selected soft window treatments that fit both the nursery theme and the roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future use as an office for the park district.

Cabin Deborah DeCurtins, owner of Acorn Studio, had the task of designing the rugged cabin on the Knoop property. The park district plans to use the cabin for meetings and events so DeCurtins made sure to include a comfortable gathering area, as well as a full kitchen. At just 540 square feet, DeCurtins was able to keep the rustic charm of the cabin intact by incorporating colorful furnishings and traditional lighting.

Banker’s Study The Banker’s Study gets its name from an antique safe built into the wall. David Fair, of David Fair Interiors, designed the study to be a quiet respite in the house, where the home’s important matters could be handled. The room features formal traditional furnishings and soft neutral colors.
Spring Room When the home served as the base of operations for the farm, this Spring Room was used as a cold storage area. Interior designers Deborah DeCurtins, John See, David Fair and Sharon Bledsoe set out to refurbish the Spring Room to be a functional space for today’s modern home. New stone and copper accents add visual appeal to the room.

What kind of shindig is this, anyway? The level of formality you want the party to evoke will help form much of the decision-making you need to do. Therefore, establish upfront if you’re having a formal affair or keeping it more casual and let that be your guide as you pull together the details. For example, for a more formal party, consider sending invitations by postal mail and complementing them with matching printed menus, place cards and thank you notes, creating a more sophisticated event. For a less formal party use an online service such as e-vite.com to email invites to your guests. If you’re an invited guest, be sure to respond to party invitations by the requested RSVP date.
At every party there are two kinds of people—those who want to go home and those who don’t. The trouble is, they are usually married to each other.

What’s on the menu? Regardless of the style of your party, formal or casual, it is generally easier and less expensive to serve a few appetizers followed by a meal, rather than prepare a large menu of appetizers to serve guests for an entire evening. The number of ingredients needed and the time required to prepare enough variety can make an appetizer-only menu a costly option. Instead, consider serving two to three appetizers followed by a dinner of salad with Gorgonzola cheese and blackberry pear vinaigrette, beef Wellington with red wine demi-glace and sliced potatoes with goat cheese. (Visit housetrends.com for recipes). As a rule of thumb, most adults will nibble six to seven appetizers an hour during the first two hours, and half that amount after that. Also, guests will generally eat about ten percent less at the main meal when appetizers are served beforehand. Round out your menu by offering a wine selection that complements your menu. Terms such as weight, aroma and intensity are often bandied about by wine experts so here’s a quick lesson in pairing the appropriate wine with food. Balance is the goal, so neither the food nor the wine should dominate the other. Therefore, match the commanding taste of intense wines with robust meals. Weight is simply a measure of the viscosity or thickness of the wine so serve heavy wines with rich foods and lighter wines with lighter dishes. Matching aromas is not a big concern, but try to pair aromatic foods with aromatic wines. Elbows off the table, Mabel! Creating a decorated table to showcase your meal, or “tablescaping” as it is often called, can be fun if you’re a creative type or stressful if not. Whether you plan to sit guests down to a formal meal with place settings, or provide a more casual buffet dinner, your table can easily look festive and seasonal. Setting a beautiful table doesn’t require expensive dishes. Give your white bone china table settings an updated look by swapping out just the matching salad plates and replacing them with inexpensive amber, green or purple clear glass plates. Repeat the color in other elements of the table such as napkins, a table runner or placemats to unify the finished look. You may want to incorporate the color onto your invitations and menu cards also. If natural elements are more your style, cover your buffet table with butcher block paper and add a plaid winter scarf or piece of burlap fabric for texture. Place serving dishes of food on a small sled in the center of the table or fill pairs of ice skates with greens for a simple center piece. Don’t underestimate the simple beauty of fresh greens such as magnolia, boxwood or evergreen branches and cleverly arranged fruits such as figs, grapes, pears, persimmon and pomegranate to provide just enough timeless beauty and color to your table. Or consider displaying pots of Narcissus Tazetta, or “paper whites.” Paper whites are fragrant indoor plants for winter and the holiday season, and forcing them to bloom is as easy as putting the bulbs in water with stones or marbles to anchor them in place. The fragrant flowers bloom within about 3 weeks of planting. For extra elegance, lay framed mirrors in the center of your table and set the pots of flowers on top. continued >

to Mike Mattevi and Mike Rogers’ annual holiday open house is like an instant passport to Colonial Williamsburg, wrapped in all the festive accoutrements that 18th-century America might have offered.
An evening to remember The spirit of the season is felt in the generous, warm and unpretentious way the couple entertains and decks the halls. The food is a fabulous homemade feast—from scrumptious hors d’oeuvres followed by a Colonial-inspired buffet dinner with Smithfield ham, tenderloin and other Yuletide dishes. Candles and oil-burning lamps flicker and cast a magical glow upon an unforgettable evening. The fireplace in the keeping room, transformed into an 18th-century tavern for the event, magnificently roars, and the pleasant bartender, who wears a tri-cornered hat popular during Colonial times, handily pours beverages from behind the cage bar. Even Jack, the family Airedale terrier, seems to enjoy the merriment. The couple’s fondness for the famous historic site in Virginia radiates throughout their spacious two-story Colonial-style home in the Washington Township area of Dayton. “When we do the party, everything is real,” explains Mattevi. “We try to follow some of the traditions at Williamsburg.” continued >

decorating trends Swags made of delicious-looking natural ingredients such as lemons, pomegranates and apples are elegantly draped on the banister leading to the second floor; cheerful Santa figurines grace various nooks and crannies, and a quaint village scene dominates the mantel in the living room. And, yes, fresh pineapples— a recurring motif in Colonial Christmas decorations—pop up in centerpieces throughout the home. The couple started their Christmastime tradition when they moved into their home in 2004. The neighborhood already had established an annual holiday potluck, and Mattevi and Rogers seized upon the opportunity to host the festivities. “It has evolved from 30 people to 130 people. The more we had it, the more fun it became,” Mattevi says. The event is family-friendly, as the couple’s children—Olivia, 16, and Alec, 15—are active participants in staging the open house. Don Rogers, Rogers’ father, serves as an informal curator and is happy to describe the various construction elements of the home, which was built in 1967. His own handiwork is seen in the small wooden baskets on the window ledges outside filled with fruit and greenery.
Attention to details The home reflects excellent craftsmanship and the replication of historic details that the original owners, also lovers of the Colonial period, insisted upon when they built the house. “They left us with lots of photographs of the architectural detail at Williamsburg,” Mattevi says. Masons and blacksmiths were part of the team that built the home, an impressive, 3,500-square-foot replica of a Colonial Williamsburg home. Rogers and Mattevi say most of the homes in their neighborhood are replicas of historic homes either in Williamsburg or Deerfield, Massachusetts. continued >

Keeping a cohesive Colonial look throughout the home, the men repainted the interior of the home with paints from the Williamsburg Color Collection by Pratt & Lambert, and the palette is pleasing and sumptuous. Mattevi and Rogers also lined the walls of the home with their formidable art collection, which includes oil reproductions of famous American portraits and original English portraiture from the late 1700s and early 1800s. Christmastime, however, is when the Colonial vibe hits full stride. Beginning in October, Mattevi starts designing and making a gingerbread house that is sight to behold. After building the gingerbread base, he embellishes the structure with architectural precision and patience. Two thousand pieces of cereal, hand-placed, for instance, were used to create the roof on the building of last year’s house. “It just comes to me. It’s my labor of love,” he says, estimating that he spent about 200 hours creating the 18th-century street scene that includes a tavern and an apothecary. “We do a different gingerbread house design every year. In 2007, we did a gingerbread house version of our home. In 2008, it was the Governor’s Palace at Williamsburg,” he adds.

Last-minute preparations The larger of two garages in the back of the home serves as the creating and staging area for the myriad Christmas projects. “This is where all the behind-the-scenes disasters take place,” Rogers says with a laugh. On the evening of the party, however, there are no signs of creative blunders— only impeccable attention to detail is present. Last year, the Christmas tree in the keeping room was decked out with cookie ornaments made from Springerle molds Mattevi collects, dried yarrow, artichokes and pine cones. Mattevi says the molded cookies

originated hundreds of years ago. Today, replicas of the traditional European molds are available in hundreds of delicate yet detailed designs. At the other end of the keeping room is the cage bar, which is festively decorated as well and serves as a natural gathering point for guests, who can be seen enjoying Washington Apple Martinis and Coconut Rum Punch. Just for fun, Rogers demonstrates how the cage works. “In Colonial times, the cage would come down so no one would steal the liquor.” The men admit it is hard to pinpoint the most memorable moments of the holiday merry-making. “My favorite part is when everything is ready and the servers are here. Then I can relax and have a martini,” says Mattevi, who takes the whole week off work prior to the open house. “I love coming up with different ideas. That’s the fun—and seeing everyone having fun.” Rogers adds that he enjoys the “one-half hour prior to the party and the hush before all the guests arrive.” TOP LEFT: The homeowners’ American and English portrait collection completes the Colonial theme in the home.
