—Shannon Terpenning
When I met Shannon I was immediately drawn to her optimistic approach to life. Shannon and her husband, James, recently received a brand new home thanks to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. When construction on their Beavercreek home got underway, the outpouring of support from our entire community was astounding and inspiring. As word spread about the Terpenning family, friends, neighbors and complete strangers joined together to provide them with a phenomenal home that accommodates all of their needs. The way the community banded together to support one of its own is the reason why I am proud to call the Greater Miami Valley home. In addition to the Terpenning family, Cathy and Miles Johnson have kindly opened the doors of their Washington Township home to show us what the holidays mean to them. We’re also exploring some of the money-saving building techniques you can take advantage of by going “green.” Our last issue of the year focuses on the important things in life. It is our hope that over the next few months you take a moment to evaluate what is important in your life. Have a safe and happy holiday season and we’ll see you in March! Happy Holidays,

you are lucky enough, in life, you will come in contact with a few extraordinary people who will inspire you by their selfless acts and unwavering dedication to their family, friends and community. Even if you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting James and Shannon Terpenning face-to-face, you might know their story. Recently, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came knocking on their door. The couple’s inspiring story involving their ability to overcome tough obstacles and their strong community involvement, brought the television show to Beavercreek, and seven days later they were presented with a new home. F Housetrends recently caught up with James and Shannon to see how life has changed since they moved into their new place. You’ll also hear from Diane Korman, a senior producer with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Rob Arnold, owner of Coventry Fine Homes, the local builder involved in the project, about how the Terpenning family has made an impact on their lives. continued >

Building the house was a collaboration between the design team and Coventry Fine Homes. The Terpenning family needed a home that could accommodate two wheelchairs, as well as four young children. Korman says universal design played a big part when it came to the construction of the house. They made sure to include extra wide hallways and an open floor plan, but they also took into account that the children will grow and that the family dynamic might change with time. Korman explains that part of the casting process includes getting to know the family, learning about their hopes and dreams for their new home. Getting Coventry Fine Homes on board to build the house didn’t take much convincing. Arnold has built a few homes for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and says he enjoys doing these types of jobs for charity. On a construction level, building this house wasn’t like anything he had ever done before. Arnold considers this to be the Super Bowl of homebuilding. With only 104 hours to build a house, he says everything had to be planned out in advance. But with the help of nearly 2,000 volunteers, both Korman and Arnold are proud to say they were able to reach their goal and provide a well-deserving family with a new place to call home.
First of all, the house is fantastic. How has it been the past few months? Shannon Terpenning: On a functional level, the house is amazing. Both James and his brother, Joe, can maneuver around the house in their wheelchairs. We can also all sit around the table for dinner and negotiate around each other easily. It’s nice to have the continued >

kitchen open to the great room, now I can work on dinner and still keep an eye on the kids. The bathrooms have been a huge help. We used to have one bathroom for everyone. Now the kids have their own and so does Joe. And our master bathroom is probably the size of our old master bedroom. James Terpenning: We’re not stacked on top of each other anymore. When I come home from work and the kids want to use my wheelchair or play we now have the space to interact and enjoy each other. It has also been great for my brother. He has his own room now, decorated in his two favorite passions: Disney and movies. He now has some privacy and somewhere to retreat to when we have company over.
The design team always creates such unique rooms for the children. How do the kids like their rooms? Shannon: Justin and Jacob’s (the 2-year-old twins) room, with all of the blocks and Legos, is right up their alley. They love to play with the large foam pieces. I often walk in the room to find them dragging and throwing them around. Josselyn’s princess room fits her perfectly. She loves to play dress-up with the pretty clothes and makeup. Joshua shows everyone his peek-a-boo room. It’s very sweet and very appropriate. continued >

11/3/09 9:15:42 AM
What are you looking forward to the most now that you are getting settled? James: Playing hide-and-seek with the kids. It used to be tough in the old house, now they have so many places to hide. We’ve also enjoyed the back yard and we can’t wait for spring. It’s nice to be able to go in the back yard with my wheelchair and play with the kids. Shannon: It will be nice to gather around the fireplace this winter since our old fireplace didn’t work. I’m also looking forward to planting in my herb garden and watching the kids enjoy themselves on the playground.
What has this experience meant to you and your family? James: It was not only good for us, it was good for our neighbors and the whole community. During construction some of my neighbors told me they talked to other neighbors they haven’t talked to in ages. The process brought everyone back together again and that is wonderful. Now, when we’re on our walks it takes a lot longer because we stop and talk to everyone. Shannon: This whole experience has taught me that the generosity of people is never-ending. So many people have given us gifts in all different forms. Complete strangers are happy for us and that is very touching. It restores your faith in humanity. continued >

Diane, how many entries do you typically receive and how do you select the deserving families? Diane Korman (Senior producer, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition): We get anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 letters and applications each week. Our casting department reads every letter. As part of our criteria, we look for deserving families, who not only have houses in great disrepair, but who also give back to the community in some way.
What was it about the Terpenning family that made Extreme Makeover: Home Edition pick them? Diane Korman (Senior producer, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition): We picked the Terpennings due to their simple acts of kindness. James is a hero for many reasons. He’s overcome so many struggles of his own, yet he still managed to take in his brother, and make a difference in the lives of other people living with disabilities. He continued to pay it forward without ever thinking about making life easier for himself. These are the kinds of acts that inspire all of us and show us what family is all about.
What did you gain from this experience? Rob Arnold (Owner, Coventry Fine Homes): Whenever you get involved in something like this you gain a new perspective on community and how people pull together to donate time, money and
24 housetrends.com 016-025 tFEA PayingItForward.indd 24
11/3/09 9:16:32 AM
many other things. We had some volunteers working on the house for a few days straight. Everyone was there because they wanted to be there and I feel very proud to know that I was able to take part in doing something for a family that was so well-deserving.
What has been the most rewarding part of working on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition? Diane Korman (Senior producer, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition): My favorite moment, to this day, is when the bus moves and we get to look in the family’s eyes when they see their house for the first time. It is rewarding to see the emotion, surprise and joy on their faces. The crowd of volunteers consisting of neighbors, friends and complete strangers that show up to help and witness the reveal is also inspiring. This show has the ability to bring a community together and make a difference. When we started this show six seasons ago we were lucky to get 50 people to show up when the bus moved, now we get as many as 10,000. Rob Arnold (Owner, Coventry Fine Homes): Undoubtedly when the family came home and saw the house for the first time. Knowing that we built a home that fits their lifestyle and suits their needs is very rewarding. As long as they are happy and comfortable then we feel we accomplished what we set out to do. Washington Township couple create their own winter wonderland By Alison Bour | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging
Cathy Johnson never met a holiday she didn’t like. She owns numerous place settings and changes her dining table throughout the year. She even uses individual vases and cut flowers that match the current season. F So just imagine what she does at Christmas. Once her guests take in the multiple trees, decorative gift boxes, lit candles, soft holiday music and garland—all highlighted with a glowing fire—they feel as if they entered a winter wonderland. F Cathy used to showcase a more craft-inspired style at Christmas complete with homemade ornaments created by her children. But they are grown now so she boxed up those mementos and adopted a more sophisticated design. continued >

decorating trends A house designed for decorating A few years ago she and her husband, Miles—who own the kitchen and bath remodeling company, Kitchens by Design—bought a lot in a 30-year old plat. The couple cites the established trees and natural creek as the details that convinced them to make the area their home. The other lots they considered were open plots, and Cathy says she wanted outdoor beauty she could blend with her indoor rooms. “My favorite place to be is inside looking out.”

11/3/09 9:08:42 AM
decorating trends They set out to build a house that fit into the neighborhood, with traditional styling, which is an important part of her holiday decoration story. Cathy believes compelling room design first requires a strong interior vision. So, when she embarked on finding updated Christmas themes, she looked to the rooms in her home for inspiration. “It’s not your normal red and green,” she explains. “It’s refined. I use burgundies and golds because that’s the palette I use year-round.” “Christmas is about family,” she continues. “It’s about seeing snow on the trees out your windows and serene feelings.” In keeping with her decorating philosophy, she places trees—up to four in all—offset of her home’s large windows, so that guests’ eyes “are automatically drawn to them.” Carefully chosen lighting completes the calm atmosphere most people crave during the hectic holidays. For that component, Cathy chooses soft, understated bulbs on the mantel and inside a furniture-style TV cabinet, as well as candlestick lamps on sofa tables.
A personalized touch Viewing the Johnsons’ home at Christmas leads many to believe Cathy possesses not only natural talent but professional design training. The first is true; the latter isn’t. Although she now plans to obtain a design certification, Cathy currently creates out of sheer love and what she obtained over the years through “osmosis.” “I think it comes from my mother, who is extremely talented with decorating. She lived with an aunt who has an interior design degree.” Cathy also picked up tips about design concepts during her years working at both Elder-Beerman and Kohl’s. “I learned about retail schemes, how to use plan-agrams and a lot about color flow.” While Miles has 30 years of remodeling experience and runs that aspect of
the business, Cathy concentrates on both paperwork and working one-on-one with customers in the showroom. She wants to gain some traditional design training to expand her abilities in this area. “People don’t always know the best ways to place furniture or dishes in cabinets, or hang photos in the most efficient ways.”
Holiday joy As for her holiday tradition, she launches it the day after Thanksgiving. She admits it looks rather messy when she first unpacks the storage boxes. It takes her about three full days to make the magic happen and—believe it or not—she actually likes doing it. Except for one part, that is. If you run
into Miles killing time at a coffee shop during Cathy’s holiday decorating frenzy, he’s likely avoiding the tree set-up phase. “He usually leaves the house during that time,” she laughs. “I tend to get perfectionistic with the trees and he gets the brunt of it.” The Johnsons get to enjoy Cathy’s splendor until almost New Year’s. While her home seems fit for large parties, she prefers small gatherings with just a few other couples or special time with girlfriends. Despite a few days of chaos, Miles also loves their home at the holidays, and says he’s fortunate to have such a talented wife. “The best part of it all is seeing her happy.”

The latest funky and fresh styles breathe new life into an old bathroom staple By Danielle Krouse
Gone are the days of the typical bathroom vanity, whose only purpose was to store cleaning products and tissues. Today, vanity options are limitless with choices to accompany every bathroom’s look and feel. continued > Photo courtesy of Villeroy & Boch

bathroom trends Wall mounts Wall-mounted vanities are great for giving bathrooms a modern twist. Sleek designs seem to float above the ground for a streamlined style. Try using a wall mount in smaller powder rooms. The absence of a bulky vanity will make the room less crowded and give a more open feel.

Works of art Furniture says a lot about you and your style, no matter where it’s located in the home. Don’t be afraid to express your artistic side with fun colors or a custom painted vanity to match your personality. These pieces will add a stylish, yet whimsical feel to the room.

Finishes Playing with the finish on your vanity allows you to truly make it your own. An unconventional material such as leather offers a unique texture not typically associated with vanities. Some companies are even allowing customers to choose any material they can think up to add the ultimate flair to any bathroom.

KNAPKE CABINETS ANNOUNCE NEW WASHINGTON SQUARE SHOWROOM Ask owner Bernie Knapke what his goal is for Knapke Cabinets, and his confident reply is “to be the very best at what we do.” And if past success is any indicator of the future, Bernie is well on the way to achieving his goal with the opening of another impressive showroom on Far Hills Ave. in Centerville’s Washington Square Shopping Center. “We are very excited about this next phase in our development and about joining Dorothy Lane Market and the other fine retailers in Washington Square,” said Bernie. “We’re busy planning the space and designing wonderful new displays. We will be opening very soon and we’re looking forward to welcoming new and existing customers alike.”
Design “I also have a great team of top designers,” adds Bernie, “Aaron Mauk in Troy, Clive Morgan in Centerville and Kasie Spangler in Versailles all have that special gift for adding that extra wow factor. After all, a new kitchen or bath becomes a permanent fixture in your home for years to come so it has to be right.” Clive agrees. “The difference between a so-so kitchen and a great kitchen is all about the detail in the design and the quality of the installation. A good design should make every element blend seamlessly to achieve a unique statement that complements the customer’s taste, home and lifestyle.”
Aaron adds, “When you consider all the various combinations of wood species, stains, glazes, paint finishes, door styles and accessories, the possibilities Knapke Cabinets started life trading from a small really are endless.” woodworking shop in Versailles, Bernie’s home town, making custom cabinets primarily for local Installation customers and builders. “We made everything from kitchen and bathroom cabinets to custom “Another area where we excel is installation,” adds wet bars and media centers. Once, we even made Bernie. “When it comes to installing cabinetry, we don’t believe in using a doll house!” Encouraged by subcontractors. This gives us the success of this early venture, much more control over the Bernie then branched out by quality. Our in-house team of purchasing prime retail space skilled installers has years of in the center of Troy, expanding experience with residential his product line to include semicabinetry and this part of the custom cabinetry and hiring his process is just as important to own in-house design, installation a successful result as the design and remodeling team. “Working or the quality of the cabinets. I with builders is still a very important part of our business,” said Knapke, “but guess that’s the carpenter in me coming out!” joked the Troy showroom gave us the additional resource Bernie. to offer the complete package directly to the end Reputation user, something I’d always dreamed of doing.” Then

“Sometimes I’m so busy running the business that I forget to just stand back and appreciate how far we’ve come and the enviable reputation we’ve earned. But I’ll never forget the day a friend told me about a set of details he’d seen for a house that was on the market. Included in the list of improvements the owners had made were the words ‘fabulous new Knapke kitchen.’ For me, that says it all,” beamed Bernie.
As the business flourished, a third location was opened in Centerville.“A lot of our customers were driving up to Troy from South Dayton to work with us so it made sense to expand there.” Four years have passed and now they’re ready for their new showroom in Washington Square. “We hope this investment demonstrates our appreciation for all the support we have received in the past and our Knapke Cabinets---- The Last Word In Kitchens continuing commitment to the Dayton market.” Referral At Knapke, we are proud of the fact that so much of our business comes through personal recommendation. That speaks volumes about our staff and the quality of our work. “People like working with us for a variety of reasons,” said Bernie. “You’re not just an order number at Knapke. Ours is a very personal and professional service. As an independent, family owned and operated business, I think customers see us as a refreshing change from the big box retailers. We always try to exceed expectations not budgets.”

Little Things
Mean a Lot
Inviting new home refuses to leave its mark on the environment By Christina Kleiner | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging
The phrase couldn’t ring more true—the little things do mean a lot. Oftentimes, it’s the little things in life that mean the most. The same can be said for your home. All of the little things play a significant role in creating the perfect atmosphere that identifies with your needs. a Home builder Newt Bartel, owner of Fortress Homes, recently finished building a new environmentally friendly home in the Estates of Paragon community in Centerville. The nearly 7,000-square-foot house has everything any family could want and need, including a large eat-in kitchen with an adjoining family room, an inviting dining room and a first floor master suite. “This house was built to adjust to its family,” he explains. “It has a goal, and that is to make life more convenient.” a For Newt, green living is a way of life. The house is chock-full of eco-friendly products, many of which you’ll read about in the following pages, but what this house is truly meant to do is provide a happy, healthy home for its family. continued >

building trends Curb appeal and more The home offers a bit of nostalgia thanks to its inviting covered porch. “Everyone remembers the days when gathering on the front porch of their grandparents’ house was a common event,” Newt says. “It’s those simple things that make all the difference.” Creating a comfortable environment on the inside was also a top priority. The entire home is sealed with Icynene foam insulation,
which not only eliminates drafts, it is formaldehyde-free and helps deaden sound from both inside and outside the home. The major benefit to creating an energy-efficient home is the drastic drop in heating and cooling costs. “We’ve estimated that the average gas and electric bill will be $205 per month for a house of this size, which surprises nearly everyone,” Newt explains. continued >
I cynene foam insulation seals the house completely, eliminating drafts.

11/3/09 9:13:00 AM
The garage and porches are separated and sealed from the rest of the house for better inhome air quality.
The landscape beds consist of indigenous flowers and shrubs that don’t require a lot of watering.
Green FYI One of the most important components in the effort to build green is to have an energy performance test by a third party. Certified Energy Raters recently tested this home’s performance and energy efficiency. The Home Energy Rating System, or HERS, tests the performance of the home’s HVAC equipment, heating system, lighting, appliances, and other equipment. A standard built house must score around 100, while a five-star Energy Star rated home must score 70 or below. The home by Fortress Homes scored a 53, making it 25% better than the fivestar rating and 47% more energy efficient than a standard home.

A flowing floor plan The kitchen, decorated in a mixture of light and dark colors, could be considered the centerpiece of the house. With help from his wife, Genell, Newt created a warm and inviting gourmet kitchen with all of the bells and whistles. The dark brown cabinetry offers plenty of storage space thanks to floor-to-ceiling cabinets. The granite countertops blend perfectly
with the backsplash, which is comprised of white subway tile behind the work stations and a mixture of elegant glass and stone mosaic tiles in other areas. The stainless steel bar connected to the island and the breakfast area offers plenty of seating and encourages family time. As for energy conservation, the kitchen is packed to the hilt. “This is probably the
Fluorescent light bulbs and fixtures use 75% less energy and last about 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
The cabinets were purchased from a facility less than 500 miles away, which cuts shipping and fuel costs.

busiest room in most houses,” explains Genell. “It only makes sense to fill it with as many environmentally friendly elements as possible,” she says. The kitchen flows directly into the bright and cheerful family room, which features a wall of windows looking out over the rear yard. “The room doesn’t get direct sunlight, but the natural light
brightens the space significantly,” Newt says. Unlike many great rooms boasting soaring two-story ceilings, Newt sticks with ten foot ceilings in here and throughout the house. “The house has the open floor plan that everyone wants, but it also offers that cozy feeling that everyone tries to achieve.” continued >
The Energy Star rated appliances feature advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water.
The direct vent fireplace draws in air for combustion from the outside and expels gasses to the outside as well.
The hickory floors feature a polyurethane finish that doesn’t have any VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions and is formaldehyde-free.

building trends On-demand tankless hot water means the shower is ready to go as soon as the faucet is turned on.
Low flow faucets and showerheads help reduce water waste without lowering water pressure.
Entertaining thoughts The formal dining room sits to the front of the house, greeting guests as they walk through the massive front door. Decorated in rich warm hues of brown and beige, Newt makes a point of explaining that being conscious of your environment doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. “There are so many options available so you can still have everything you want and need for your family,” he says. “But, by making these choices, you also get to leave less of an impact on the earth.”
Water conscious Second to the kitchen, the bathrooms in your home probably consume the most energy and water. The master bathroom in this home is missing one element—a bathtub. Newt says thinking about your lifestyle is an important step in the green living process. “A bathtub uses a lot of water. If you typically don’t use one, you probably don’t need it,” he explains, adding that not having a bathtub will not affect the resale value of your home. This bathroom features an elegant double vanity, with built-in medicine cabinets, a large walk-in closet and an oversized shower. The bathroom is decorated in the same warm earth tones seen throughout the rest of the home. Both elegant and charming, this house proves there’s more to it than meets the eye. “It becomes more than a house, it becomes a legacy of how you live your life,” Genell sums up. “By doing better things and making better choices, you are protecting your life, your family and the world around you.”
