We’re always looking for something unique. —Bill Terry
’’
There couldn’t be a more perfect word to describe this issue: unique. The staff at Housetrends sees a wide range of homes, from all over the country, Photo by Jim Crotty but it is not too often that we get to feature three one-of-a-kind homes in the same issue. Bill Terry and his wife, Carole, are one of three couples you’re about to meet in this issue that had a vision, and sought to carry it out. From the Terrys’ ability to build a home that incorporates their love for Italian furniture and European architecture, to Jennifer and Dr. Joel Tobiansky, who have created a stunning, high-tech master bathroom that caters to their every whim. And we can’t forget the spectacular 20,000-square-foot addition that houses everything from an indoor pool and basketball court to a bowling alley and poker room. Talk about being built for entertaining! For even more inspiration, don’t forget to go to Housetrends. com for additional photos from the homes featured in this issue as well as project ideas for your next home renovation. You can even watch a video of Bill and Carole Terry talking first-hand about their Waynesville home. And as always, if you have a project that you think we should see, don’t hesitate to drop me a line at eyaus@housetrends.com. I would love to hear from you!

Reinventing the An Ohio family turns the tables on the traditional vacation and creates their own private paradise By Julie Thompson Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging
Every family has their own way of getting away from it all. For some it might be a trip to the beach. For others it might be a drive to the casino or even a night at the bowling alley. Whatever it entails, it often takes careful planning and time off work.
But
for one Southwest Ohio family, quick getaways are an everyday occurrence. That’s because in just a few short steps, their everyday living quarters moves into a 20,000-square-foot oasis including an indoor pool, bowling alley, poker room, car museum and full-court gymnasium. The family didn’t plan to build an entertainment hub. Rather, it just blossomed from an original plan that was much smaller. “The main thing we wanted to do was add on garage space because my husband was collecting cars and he had them here, there and everywhere,” the home’s owner says. “Then it moved from that to wanting a space where the kids could go and enjoy indoor activities.” continued >

A tropical locale in the Buckeye State The new addition was built onto the home’s original 15,000-squarefoot structure that now sits on a former farm purchased in 1996. Back then, the family lived in the original farmhouse while plans were finalized for their dream home. Little did they know that their estate would eventually become a gathering place within the community. The addition’s main attraction is its naturally designed pool, which resembles a tropical getaway. While the pool area was the last feature considered for the addition, it now acts as the main body of the new building. The room in which the pool is housed resembles a rotunda, but feels more like the Bahamas. Dry, hot desert air pumps throughout the room, consistently keeping the space at or above the pool’s water temperature to avoid condensation on the windows. Large boulders make up the pool’s perimeter creating a natural, grotto-inspired look. The pool can be accessed at several points including a graduated beach entry. In addition to the waterfall, a pool slide is tucked inconspicuously into the rocks. A hot tub haven was made within a cave cut out of the rocks where the waterfall flows into the pool. The cave is accessible via a tunnel cut through the rocks or by simply swimming up under the waterfall. Once inside, the family can enjoy the peace and quiet while gazing up at the LED lighting in the ceiling or they can turn on one of the numerous flat screen televisions that are sprinkled throughout the entire addition. continued >

For those looking for more of an adventurous swim, take a dip into the main pool and float alongside the exotic fish and sharks that inhabit an 8,500-gallon tank in the center of the pool. The kidney-shaped tank, created and serviced by Cincinnati Aquarium Design and Maintenance, is filled with 160 fish—including sting ray and guitar fish—and 16 sharks, which will grow to three feet long. “The homeowners wanted as much variety as they could get so we chose animals that swim close to the bottom as well as those that swim more freely,” says Adam Elkus, owner of Cincinnati Aquarium Design and Maintenance. Elkus’ crew visits the aquarium three times a week and spends a lot of those hours scuba diving to feed the animals and clean the tank. It’s important to hand feed the animals to make sure they all get fed and to avoid an aggressive behavior that might occur over getting food. To complete the exotic theme, the pool area is filled with foliage. Much of it is real, with the exception of the palm trees surrounding the pool, which were designed by Shehan Pools in Northern Kentucky. When the family needs a break from the water, they can take a seat at the tiki bar, enjoy a drink, and catch a game on one of the two flat screen televisions behind the bar. A set of pocket doors behind the bar leads to a full-service kitchen, complete with a sink, dishwasher, oven, refrigerator and freezer. continued >

Indoor sports activities For family and friends who enjoy playing basketball rather than watching it, a full court is waiting just around the bend. The gymnasium is equipped with bleachers and a multi-purpose floor, which allows almost any type of sport to be played including volleyball, tennis and even inline skating. Sliding glass doors along the tiki bar lead to a two-lane bowling alley, designed and installed by Brunswick. The alley, which includes a bar and seating area, features an ocean-themed decor. A large dolphin sculpture stands in the alley’s entrance and a 900-gallon aquarium provides an underwater atmosphere. Unlike the main aquarium in the pool, this one takes on a more peaceful scene with up to 400 animals including shrimp, snails, clams, corals and crabs. “What is cool about this tank is that you can walk up to it at any point and discover new things that you didn’t know were there before,” Elkus says. After a family-friendly bowling tournament, the adults can make their way to the nearby poker room, which is designed and decorated with serious card playing in mind. The homeowners love to play cards with their friends and were excited to build a specific place dedicated to this one activity. The poker room’s main room features two tables and seven flat-screen televisions. It’s in the poker room that the décor takes on a more mature look with ornate materials like dark wood, leather and marble countertops. The poker room offers a separate room for the men who might want to enjoy a cigar with the game. The adjoining cigar room includes one poker table and a ventilation system overhead that carries the smoke out of the room. The idea was to create a country club-like feeling and the homeowners did that with the cherry woodwork and a wall mural painted by artist Mickey Harris. continued >

LightsOut Out
Let technology do the work for you When you add on 20,000 square feet of space to a home you’re talking about a lot of light switches to turn off at night. Couple that with 31 flat screen televisions and a state-of-the art audio system and it becomes an even bigger giant to put to bed. “The problem with an addition of this size is figuring out how you are going to control everything,” says Lee Howell, whose company, Audio Video Design Group, was hired to create a solution for the homeowners so that they didn’t face such a dilemma. The Dayton-based company created a one-of-a-kind software solution to control all the technology in their new entertainment addition. Over a matter of months, four people wrote code for the system used to control the lights, sound, video and security throughout the house. That doesn’t include the other special features like the pool’s waterfall or fog system. Audio Video used two main software applications: Crestron to control the audio and visual technology and a Lutron Light System to control the lighting. Both work hand in hand to funnel the control of everything down to small screens placed throughout the addition. Now, with one quick touch, the homeowners can control everything from the flow of the waterfall in the pool to what movie is being played on the large television screen by the gymnasium. One small touch can also put the entire addition into themes such as party mode, which pre-programs lights, sound and even the waterfall to a certain mood or feeling. Security cameras also allow the homeowners to view any room at any time. The homeowners chose to show off some of the technology that operates their home by showcasing the server behind the glass door in the cigar room. Additional equipment is hidden in a closet behind the server. Perhaps the most amazing thing about the system is that the homeowners don’t have to be in the room to turn off the lights or turn on the music. All they need to do is pick up one of the portable devices in any room and get an idea of what is happening next door.

TOP: The homeowner’s extensive car collection is a sight to be seen BOTTOM: A 1967 Camaro is replicated in a nearby wall mural. OPPOSITE: The poker room and connecting cigar room boasts three card tables and numerous televisions.
A car enthusiast’s dream In addition to the poker room, you can also find the men of the house in the garage, or as the homeowners like to call it—the Museum. The area holds nine cars and has a large bay where a Prevost bus is held. The homeowner displays his large array of cars including his 1967 Camaro, his Mercedes and Hummers. The space is a car lover’s dream with custom-designed flooring, an elaborate mural, and just the right lighting to make the collection come to life. As one can imagine, the home has become a place for many parties. The family has hosted everything from birthday parties to the couple’s class reunion. But it is the low-key evenings with family and friends that they really enjoy. During card nights, you’ll find the adults gathered in the poker room and the kids splashing around in the pool. Above all else, the addition has created an amazing escape from the gray Ohio weather in the dead of winter. “We didn’t get to go to Florida for Christmas this past year,” the homeowner recalls. “But I remember saying that if we can’t be in Florida for Christmas at least we can still feel like we’re there.”

Well Traveled Waynesville couple uses their life experiences to decorate their home

Italian furniture has a particular aura about it. Physically it is just furniture, created to provide a function, but realistically it is truly a work of art. You could say that the craftsmen who create these pieces are artists in every way. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the elaborate carvings to the intricate inlays of various woods and mater ials. It is as if whatever they dreamed up in their heads they were able to create with their hands. F Strolling through Bill and Carole Terry’s Waynesville home is like walking through an Italian furniture store. Around every bend, in every room, there is a furniture piece unlike any other. “When it comes to furniture, it has to strike both of us,” says Bill. “It has to be a unique piece, whether it is a desk, a credenza or a bookcase.” F The fact that the couple was able to combine their exten sive Italian furniture collection with pieces they’ve found in Florida and here in the Greater Miami Valley is quite impressive. continued >

A trip around the world The Terrys have General Motors to thank for allowing them to travel the world. Bill spent 40 years working for the car manufacturer. “I started out in the manufacturing end in 1953 and eventually made my way up to plant manager. We’ve spent the majority of our time here in Dayton, but we also lived in Detroit and Portugal,” he says. It was in Portugal that the couple purchased the majority of their Italian furniture. “Almost every time we left to come back to the United States, we were returning with furniture,” says Carole. Their growing family led them to return to Dayton a few years ago. “We were living in Florida, but our children live here and we wanted to see our grandchildren grow up,” Bill says.
OPENING SPREAD: The teal and yellow serving pieces add a nice touch of color to the china hutch in the breakfast area. BELOW: The kitchen features two islands—one dedicated to food preparation and one for bar seating and eating. BOTTOM: The cabinetry features elegant rope detailing.
They immediately put their Florida home on the market and started looking for a house. Since Carole’s mother, Opal Dean, lives with them, they needed to make sure she had her own space as well. “Our house in Florida had a separate apartment connected to the main house via a covered breezeway,” Bill explains. “Opal lived there and we wanted something similar up here.” When they couldn’t find what they were looking for, the Terrys decided to build. They found a large lot in Auteur Estates in Waynesville and hired Rick Herman at Traditional Custom Builders to build their new house. “This is the 12th home we’ve built,” Bill says with a laugh. “Each one has been different.” continued >

The interior of the nearly 10,000-square-foot home perfectly complements the French provincial-inspired exterior. “This concept stemmed from our travels in and out of the country. Most of our homes incorporated stone,” says Bill. “But in this case, the design started to evolve as the house took shape, we eliminated the use of brick on the front façade, leaving the exterior covered in stone except for a few areas and the back of the house.”
A great attention to detail As soon as you walk through the front door and into the foyer you are greeted by a clear view of the great room ahead. The foyer is grand, yet unpretentious. An elaborate light accented by a wood ceiling medallion hangs overhead. The light casts a warm glow on the walls, drawing your attention to the crown molding, the trim on the doorways leading to Bill’s office and the formal dining room, and the curved outer wall of the great room. “We wanted to make a statement with the great room,” says Bill. “We did away with a formal living room to create one big gathering area.” The great room, which is where Bill says he and Carole spend a lot of time, exudes an open feel thanks to the 12-foot coffered ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a view of the woods behind their home. The massive white built-ins flanking the fireplace boast molding to match the ceiling, creating a seam-
less transition. “We started with the fireplace design and worked our way out,” says Bill. “We didn’t want something flashy, but we wanted to do something more than just hanging a flat-panel television on the wall.” The ceilings were a very important element to the overall design of the house. From the coffered ceiling in the great room to the tiered tray ceiling in the formal dining room, Bill says the ceilings set the tone for the house. “We worked from ceiling to floor, from there other things started to fall into place,” he adds. “From the height of the ceilings, to the trim work, to the color combinations we used in the dining room, everything ties together.”
Colorful accents The Terrys teamed up with Clive Morgan at Knapke Cabinets to create the kitchen, as well as the rest of the cabinetry seen in the house. Carole came up with the color scheme for each room, including the idea to blend light and dark colors in the kitchen. Morgan installed maple Decora cabinets with doors that boast elegant rope detailing, which he says fits the European-inspired design of the kitchen. The perimeter cabinets and bar island feature an off-white finish, while the center island is covered in Decora’s Vintage Bordeaux finish. “What is great about the kitchen is the large amount of space,”
40 housetrends.com 036-042 nFEA WellTraveled.indd 40
8/31/09 12:14:01 PM
Morgan says. “We were able to create two islands, which is a great concept and not that common due to space restrictions.” The cabinetry blends perfectly with the Autumn Brown granite countertops and china hutch in the connecting breakfast area. Carole’s addition of teal and yellow accent pieces add that special pop of color. “The different details and Carole’s eye for color allowed us to create a great kitchen that stands out just enough, all the while blending in nicely with the rest of the house,” Morgan says. Carole’s exceptional eye for color and detail carries over into their first floor master suite. The oversized chairs in the sitting area of the master bedroom were custom upholstered to match the teal window treatments and bedding. That soft teal color is also found in the adjoining master bathroom. “Carole is a bathtub person, I’m a shower person, so we insisted on both,” says Bill. “We incorporated the use of his-and-her vanities so we have plenty of space.” OPPOSITE: The elegant master bedroom is decorated in soft teal, brown and cream hues. TOP: The stained glass window above the bathtub distorts the view into the shower beyond. MIDDLE: The apartment houses a wellappointed kitchen, dining area and living room. BOTTOM: Windows bathe the apartment’s master bedroom with natural light.

A relaxing atmosphere The lower level needs to be seen to be believed. The Terrys wanted an entertaining space for family and friends to gather. Drawing from the design of the built-in in the great room, the lower level stone fireplace is flanked by black built-ins, which provide a stunning contrast to the light walls and flooring. The large windows and French doors leading to an outdoor patio bathe the area in natural light. The lower level is also home to Opal’s private apartment. At over 1,000 square feet, the space features a living room, master suite, kitchen and laundry room. Opal has direct access to the first floor via a convenient elevator. “We wanted to make sure she is comfortable and feels like she has her own space,” says Bill. Bill and Carole often spend their mornings enjoying breakfast in the sunroom, watching the Mallard ducks swim in the pond. After 12 houses, the couple says it has been quite an adventure. “We have never cherished one house over another,” Bill sums up. “We’ve enjoyed each house. Just like the furniture, we’re always looking for something unique.” TOP: A one-of-a-kind granite and wood vanity is the highlight of the mudroom bathroom. MIDDLE: An ornately decorated game table graces a corner of the lower level entertaining area. BOTTOM: A beautiful Italian chest with wood inlays adds character to the dining room. FAR RIGHT: An elegant vanity commands attention in the foyer powder room.

It’s Not Just Stuff The passion and the process behind collecting antiques
48 housetrends.com
By Sam Wilder | Illustrations by Tyler Hildebrand We are living in a new age where an engagement in collecting material goods may seem inappropriate to some–but that crowd would not include people who are passionate about collecting antiques. While it’s true that it is possible to be a slave to objects, collectors see their passion as a way of learning and enjoyment. The record collector finds nirvana in music, the political enthusiast learns about the history of a nation in election paraphernalia, and a postcard collector revels in an ancient view of the city where they grew up. Discovering a collecting interest can lead to a lifetime of enlightenment.
It’s fun to build a new circle of friends. There is no shortage of conversation between people who share an interest in a genre of collecting. Two people entangled in a debate about fishing lures sound like a foreign language to the uninitiated. Postcard collectors enjoy sharing specifics. Some collect postmarks while others look for images of building, bridges or a specific holiday or illustrator. There are many nuances to almost every field of collecting. Conversations between collectors help each grow with the sharing of the “secrets” of the field.
It’s a great reason to take a road trip. Almost anything can be purchased online, but technology can take away some of the magic of collecting. Getting in your car and exploring new towns and countryside is a wonderful (albeit old school) way to spend evenings and weekends. There can be great joy residing in the antique shops and cafés of small town America. Conversations that occur with travel companions, fellow shoppers and shop owners will be some of your favorite encounters. You will meet people from all over the globe even if you only travel a couple hours from home. Many collectors tour the country in search of specific items that can only be found by scouring the countryside. You can also learn a great deal about cities and towns by going to those places and talking to the local residents. Traveling is a key ingredient to experiencing the hobby in a complete way.
It’s the thrill of the hunt. You never know what great deal is lurking in the next aisle. Every collector revels in the story of buying a piece of pottery for five dollars at a yard sale that is worth $500. The treasure hunting nature of antique collecting may be at the root of the hobby. continued >
housetrends greater miami valley 49
It’s a great way to expand your world view. Knowledge is power in any busiÂness, but in the field of antiques and collectibles knowledge is the key to financial success. A chip in a piece of pottery can render one piece worthless while not widely affecting the value of another based on its scarcity. A baseball card from a rookie season may be worth many times what any card of that player may command at auction. Knowing the hunting habits of the Shawnee Indian is an important skill for an arrowhead enthusiast. To be an advanced collector, you must have more than rudimentary knowledge in the field.
It’s another way to diversify your portfolio. While antique dealers have always claimed that art and antiques are a safe way to invest, it now continued >

appears that the thought of putting your savings into a painting, Oriental rug or piece of furniture may actually make sense–even to a stock broker. Marketplace supply and demand keeps most items priced at fair market value. However, just like Wall Street stocks, some antiques can jump dramatically in value during a collecting cycle while others decrease. Oil paintings, costume jewelry and hand woven rugs are very popular right now, while glassware, production art pottery and old phonographs are in decline.
It’s time to get started finding the stuff you’re made of. Grab your car keys and a friend and start exploring the rich troves of antique treasures found throughout our southern Ohio cities and countryside. You just may spark an interest in history, get inspired by art or relive a cherished childhood memory when you come across your grandmother’s china pattern or a favorite toy. Be sure to keep this guide handy as a resource guide for all your antique adventures.

the old master bathroom in the dayton home of Jennifer and dr. Joel tobiansky, a local cardiologist, was a typical circa-1980s design complete with formica countertops, pastel colors, and a tiny pre-fab shower. | the new bathroom is nothing short of dazzling— no longer a bathroom at all—but rather an experience. continued >

Creating a masterpiece The countertops were replaced several years ago but the rest of the overhaul sat waiting. Jennifer and Joel teamed up with Chris Newman of Cheeky Monkey, a local decorative painting and interior design company, and Erich Eggers of Remodeling Designs Inc., to create a masterpiece unlike any other. “In all the publications and research we did we never saw anything like it,” says Joel. “Some of the best comments we get come from men, and usually men could care less,” Jennifer says with a laugh. Before the materials were selected, a basic design for the bathroom had to be created. Even though the trend is to have a jetted or garden bathtub in a master bathroom, the Tobianskys opted against the idea, saying they wouldn’t use it. Instead, Joel says he dreamed of a luxurious shower. The new design incorporates a zerothreshold shower in place of the old tub and a closet area. The original water closet remained, while the area that housed the original shower became storage space. The layout of the vanity area stayed similar but the finishes, like the rest of the visual decor, were dramatically changed.
Front and center Imagine a shower experience, provided by a computerized Kohler digital interface. A pre-set satellite radio station in the bathroom wakes you in the next room. As you sleepily step onto the warm tile floor thanks to radiant heat and enter the large shower, you simply hit an electronic pad that offers whatever pre-determined combination of body sprays and water temperature you desire. Surrounding you
are a mixture of sleek blue glass tiles and tiny iridescent accent pieces. If you wish to sit down in the shower, the black granite seat is also heated. Joel says the visually stunning shower, which is no longer “tucked away like an afterthought,” lets in plenty of natural light thanks to the two glass block windows. A sheet of glass on the side with all of the shower controls and sprays “is almost like an illusion,” says Jennifer. Both Jennifer and Joel are athletic, sometimes showering twice a day. After a workout, Joel has a second, pre-programmed shower that utilizes only body sprays. There is also a flat-panel television and refrigerator built into the vanity
cabinetry. With all of that, who needs a jetted tub?
Eclectic mix of materials Eggers credits Newman for envisioning the perfect combination of faux finishes and other materials. In addition to the black matte cabinetry, he suggested the use of the 1x1-inch Walker Zanger glass tile for the shower floor and bench seat wall, the 12x24-inch black tile for the bathroom floor, the fluted glass block windows and silver hardware and accents. Newman was no stranger to the Tobianskys and they trusted him completely. “Chris has done the entire house now, except maybe the garage. He has a way of seeing the end

product before it is done. I could have trusted him even if we were out of town,” Jennifer says. A specialized sandblasting technique was applied to the glass doors leading from the bedroom to the new bath, and to the water closet area in order to obscure views. “On one side vertical lines are blasted and on the back side the lines are shifted the width of the sandblasting line. It works like a privacy fence. The pattern is called Tuxedo. Jennifer found this technique on the Internet,” Eggers explains. Another specific request of the Tobianskys was a little more challenging: a ceiling mirror. Eggers admits he wasn’t sure how to do it safely and without main-
tenance issues, but he’d seen plenty of casinos and hotels install ceiling mirrors so he knew it could be done. He turned to the Internet and then the telephone, armed with a plethora of questions. The end result is quite a surprise. TOP: The oversized shower floor features radiant heat and is topped with 1x1-inch Walker Zanger glass tile. BOTTOM: The shower features a Kohler digital interfacing, allowing the homeowners to pre-program the body sprays and rain showerhead.

The approximately 6x4-foot ceiling mirror is made of mylar—the same substance used for balloons except with a much higher reflective value. It satisfied both safety and maintenance concerns, while successfully imitating the look of a mirror.
Soothing sanctuary Seeing the bathroom at night is a whole new experience from Jennifer and Joel’s morning routine. Ambiance and track lighting installed in the ceiling and floor give the room an even more stunning appearance. “I really love it at night after the sun sets. It’s extremely soothing because of the way they designed the lighting,” explains Jennifer, who adds that a light in the shower can also be pre-set to go on and off as a security feature. In addition to the essentials, the combination of materials, finishes and lighting tops off this already over-the-top spa. And yet a point Jennifer emphasizes is the bathroom’s functionality. “It has the wow-factor but it’s so easy to maintain. It seems brand new every single day we walk through the door. We don’t take it for granted.” ABOVE: Track lighting installed beneath the black matte cabinetry creates a soothing look at night.
