Walter Gropius’ forward-thinking ideas and passions helped to change the world of architecture. The world-renowned architect founded the Bauhaus School in Germany and is considered one of the masters of modern architecture. Our city is even home to a few of his architectural masterpieces. This is one of the reasons why we were so excited to get the opportunity to feature the home you see on the cover. Built in the 1940s, this Squirrel Hill residence was created following the guidelines of classic Bauhaus design. The current owners have carefully preserved the home, but they’ve also infused their personal style into the design. The marriage of art and architecture plays a big part in this issue. From a sleek contemporary kitchen to a pair of winners from the 2011 Housing Excellence Awards, the homes featured prove that, just like a painting, architecture is an inspiring art form that evokes a wide range of emotions. Showcasing these homes is our passion, and we’re excited to see what the rest of the year brings our way. We’d love to hear what inspires you, so drop us a line at wslattery@housetrends.com or visit our Housetrends Pittsburgh Facebook page. We’ll see you in the spring with our annual Outdoor Living Issue.

Passion for Bauhaus design leads to a stunning home preservation

A bit of ingenuity, artistic expression, skilled masonry and a thousand hours of muscle was all it took to update a beloved Bauhaus designed home in the heart of Pittsburgh. Owners John and Deanna took to heart the classic modernism of the home, yet they stepped out of the box and infused their own personalities into the renovation.

History lesson The Bauhaus movement was characterized by minimalism with an emphasis on glass, light, horizontal design, and built-in furniture. The original homeowner, Mrs. Berlin, grew up a privileged Squirrel Hill sophisticate who would later study at the New Bauhaus School in Illinois. The original schools, of which there were three in Germany, closed in 1933 under Nazi pressure to eliminate freedom of expression. In 1947, Mrs. Berlin fulfilled her own dream of building a Bauhaus design

home. She retained Mitchell and Ritchey, a well-known Pittsburgh architecture firm that had comprehensive knowledge of classic modernism. Mitchell and Ritchey would go on to design Pittsburgh’s former Civic Arena. John is the third owner of the home, which is located in Squirrel Hill and overlooks Fernwald Road and the Parkway. He landed here accidentally while hunting for a home that was artistically and architecturally interesting, and one that would

support his desire to have a recording studio. The modern exterior is limestone, which was unusual for homes built at that time. “Reception to the structure would have probably been mixed, with detractors easily outnumbering fans,” points out John. “In the 1940s, our home would have been grasped by the Pittsburgher who was European-traveled or liberal in their scope of what constituted art.” In either case, the home became notorious to the community, and was a familiar stop for sightseers.

The homeowners were initially concerned about the adjoined, city owned, land behind them that had become an unmaintained dumping ground. John and Deanna teamed up with their neighbors to clear the lot, restore it and plant 150 trees. “With finance and with our own muscle we turned this dump area into a park,” says John. “We were pulling out car seats, engine blocks and debris like that.” Their project was later celebrated in The New York Times. continued >

An intriguing interior The internal facelift required everything from refinishing surfaces to a full gut of a room, and John took ownership while living elsewhere for over a year. He contracted architectural firm Davis Gannon Pope to help with the redesign of rooms, but John participated in much of the physical part of the renovation. Always mindful of the integrity of the home, he retained features that he liked and eliminated others to open the space. “The largest project that I did myself was leveling the floors, which was a difficult task that took hundreds of hours,” he explains. “Typical of what I’ve done most in my life is to take on things that I’m unfamiliar with; I’m a good researcher in that regard.” The dining area remains faithful to the site lines and shapes of the original Bauhaus blueprint. “Mrs. Berlin wanted to have an observatory or transparent ceiling but her husband was practi-

cal so they compromised on this adaptation,” says John. “I think it’s no accident that the same architect that did the Civic Arena would come up with this dome design.” John designed the circular dining table, and the room preserves its built-in furniture, including a service port that was originally used for servants to bring meals. A large open living room is a seamless extension with emphasis on glass, light, and the park view below. Deanna is an accomplished photographer, whose work lines the walls throughout the home. Exhibited in museum-like fashion, her art is strategically positioned to loan color, warmth, and movement to every room. Light engulfs the guest bathroom with its minimalistic appeal. The unpretentious room flaunts magnificent Brazilian granite with hints of blue. “The things of greatest interest to me are the

materials,” says John. “I’m a sucker for natural resources and unusual stones.” Atypical of modern day suites, the master bedroom is characteristic of the era from which it came. The space and light from a window-wall are what define this glorious room. “Just the proportions of what was done in 1947 are totally different than what they do now,” points out John. “The world was different then, and people were less entitled.” The circular kitchen booth remains intact from the original design, with only the finish being new. A whimsical mural, painted by John during the restoration, resides behind the booth. The flooring is comprised of unusual African and Brazilian hardwoods, which are natural and un-dyed. continued >

Affinity for hobbies The lower level is dedicated to another one of John’s hobbies. He co-writes, arranges, and produces music. “We make records here,” he says. “I’m able to turn it into a decently intensive recording studio.” The set-up has mobile, acoustic absorption panels (gobos), which can be moved and stowed away, to convert the studio back to a moderately livable room. Vintage instruments, including a 1950’s Hammond B3 Organ, add color and flavor to this avant-garde home studio. Two jumbo-sized, Leonberger dogs, Medley and Anchor, have full reign of the house. “We don’t have children, so they are our children,” John says with a big smile. “Before the dogs, we wouldn’t have allowed dirt and scratches, but now we’re enjoying the house being less of a museum and more lived in.”

My Artwork?

is you is or is you ain't

Art experts agree: when buying contemporary art for your home, you should buy what you love. But, as with life, how do you know if it’s true love or just a passing fancy? By Nina Kieffer

Your home is a labor of love. To create an environment that embodies your outlook on life, you sweat the details: flooring, wall and window treatments, lighting, furnishings, accessories, color schemes. But of all the objects that make a home a truly enjoyable and interesting space, nothing contributes more impact than original art. And contemporary art, with its immediacy and current perspectives, speaks volumes about the personality of a home and its inhabitants.

The sum of its parts Contemporary art is relevant to our lives, and generally has something to say beyond the visual elements of the work. Not that the visual elements aren’t important. What the work conveys visually impacts us as much as the message. An immediate visceral response, whether positive or negative, tells us much about how a work affects us on a subliminal level. We might not know what it is that we instantly love or dislike about a piece of art, but there are forces at work called the formal elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, space, mass and volume) and the principles of art (movement, emphasis, unity, harmony, variety, balance, contrast, proportion and repetition) that artists employ to influence the viewer’s observation of the work. Content (subject matter), style, and medium also interact with these visual cues, along with the artist’s intention and skill. Although knowledge of art theory isn’t necessary to look at art or even to appreciate it, experts agree that if you are going to buy art, you should educate yourself about it in order to help make intelligent purchasing decisions. You can’t invest too much time on homework and legwork.

Art school confidential The more art you take in, the more you will discover what kinds of art and artists appeal to you. A plethora of contemporary art venues exist in museums, art galleries, art fairs and temporary pop-up exhibits. Museums and art galleries work constantly to entice the public with events of all stripes: special exhibits, openings, artist meet and greets, lecture series, performances by musicians, dancers and other artists, socials, docent- and curator-led tours, trunk sales and more. When you travel out of town, make it a point to visit local museums and galleries. Analyze art that appeals to you. Take a moment to look carefully. What is going on in the artwork? What do you see that makes you think that? What aspects do you find interesting and/ or enjoyable? No observation is unimportant. Each is a valid response to the work. Looking at art that you don’t think you’ll like is another great way to develop and hone your tastes. What is it that you don’t like about it? Does it have any redeeming qualities in your eyes? What are they? Engaging with others while looking at art can be enlightening. It’s amazing what other people see. Listening to others’ perspectives can broaden your own. Share your art junkets with family and friends. You’ll learn something about yourself and them. Art history books are a good resource, and you can spend many a pleasurable hour browsing through the art section of your local bookstore and museum gift shop book selections. The continuum of art history is long, complex and interconnected. Developing a background in the evolution of art will help you to understand why and how art has come to be what it is today. Much art is a response, on a personal and historical level, to the art that has Photo by Craig Thompson

come before it. There are also many books on the market that provide advice on buying contemporary art, for example “The Art of Buying Art: An Insider’s Guide to Collecting Contemporary Art” by Paige West, an avid collector who developed her passion into her own gallery, website and this practical book on what to collect, how to collect it and how to incorporate it into your home. Many museums have “Friends Groups” for museum members. These organizations are like clubs that organize events such as visiting private collections and artist studios, behind the scenes gallery tours with curators and other art experts, cultural outings to other art venues and more. It’s a great way to meet other art enthusiasts and develop those all-important contacts with those in the know. Art auctions are a fascinating way to educate yourself on what people are paying for art and what art is on the market in your locale. Many auction houses post results of past auctions on their websites, as well as pieces available for purchase in upcoming auctions. As you delve into experiencing art, you’ll learn to assess its qualities and become more comfortable discussing it with others. Your personal taste will become more manifest. You may already have inclinations and interests that you can now identify, quantify and justify.

Not just a pretty face But, what, you may ask, is contemporary art? Literally, contemporary means present-day, current. However, different organizations variously define contemporary art as art produced since World War II or the 1960s or 70s. The Cincinnati Art Museum pinpoints 1960 as its starting place for contemporary art, according to Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Jessica Flores. Flores notes that there is confusion among the public over the term. Many think contemporary is synonymous with modern, although modern art is generally considered to be art produced from the late 1800s through the 1970s that breaks with traditional art forms and techniques of the past. (Examples of modern art include Impressionism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism.) Art historian Marilyn Stokstad comments that by the 1970s, all the rules had been broken, signaling the end of an era. Because abstract art was such a high profile example of modern art that is still prevalent today, many people erroneously believe that abstract art and contemporary art are one in the same. Although abstract art can be contemporary, all contemporary art is not abstract. Some define contemporary art as any art that is produced by currently living artists, but a common thread running through much contemporary art is social consciousness, a connection to some social issue such as imperialism, global trade, feminism, AIDS awareness, etc. Flores believes that the value of contemporary art is diminished when it does not include an element of present day concerns and issues, which acts as a reflection of our current culture and the human condition. continued >

Paul Cicozi, Gallery Director, is enthusiastic about the diversity of art that James Gallery has at its disposal. James Gallery has been providing the work of regional, national and international artists to the Pittsburgh community for nearly 40 years. Every level of art buyer is welcome in the gallery. From the life-long collector to the first time buyer, Cicozi’s job is to make you feel comfortable with and enjoy the process of acquiring art. “Art is not about right or wrong, it’s about your personal reaction to it,” Cicozi asserts. The primary goal of the gallery is to determine what art appeals to you, become familiar with the space you’re purchasing the art for, and provide you with satisfying solutions. Buying art can be intimidating, and the staff works to provide each client with a relaxed, enjoyable environment for exploring options. The gallery itself includes a sculpture garden, 12,000 square feet of exhibit space, and the work of approximately 30 artists on display. Most of that work has been created within the last 10 years. Cicozi notes that each artist represented provides a unique visual vocabulary, an individual stamp that makes one distinctly different from the others. The gallery is amenable to presenting work in clients’ homes for review, especially if the art is a departure from what they already have, or is a challenge because of its scale. This allows clients to experience the art in the context of the lighting, traffic flow and vantage point of the environment. James Gallery, 413 South Main Street, www.jamesgallery.net

Eliminating buyer’s remorse Good art is always an investment, just like a major piece of furniture. Like any other investment for your home, you should always buy the best quality that you can afford. It’s also important to buy the best example of that type of work that you can, and to buy innovative rather than derivative works. Cultivate relationships with experts you can trust. Other collectors, art brokers, dealers, and curators all have unique perspectives and specialties. Reputation is important. An expert you trust can help school you in the ins and outs of buying art for the long term (it’s not an easily liquidated commodity) as well as recognizing art that is not just the latest fad, but can withstand the test of time. One of the beauties of purchasing contemporary art is that in many cases, you have access to the artists who created it. Getting to know living artists, discussing with them their motivation, techniques, history and artistic struggles will help you develop a meaningful affinity for particular artists and their work. It is entertaining to get online and read about what is happening in the world of the art glitterati—who is Charles Saatchi insulting now? What outrageous prices are being paid for high profile works of art? And although the Internet is useful for many of the tasks involved in purchasing art, like keeping you apprised of events, reading pertinent blogs and visiting websites of museums, galleries and artists, most experts advise that you only purchase art that you have seen up close and in person. Importantly, you don’t have to be a millionaire to buy good art. Collecting art used to be the province of the wealthy, but today art galleries abound, as do talented artists creating exceptional, unique artwork. Art that speaks to you and is in your budget exists and is readily available. Art buying is dependent upon other personal factors such as the size and style of your home. Some galleries will bring art to your home so you can see it in your native environment. Some also have programs for trusted clientele that include installing a potential purchase in your home for a period of time to make sure it is a good fit for you. If you arm yourself with research, knowledge, experience, exposure and trusted advisers, it will aid you in your quest to recognize and acquire the art that you truly love, and surround yourself with, for years to come.

Art streaker Moxie Dada showcases a variety of art in a variety of locations. But keep your eyes open, because sometimes it happens pretty fast! Christine Whispell, owner, is an art evangelist whose goal is to promote the arts and endorse creative living in Pittsburgh. She does this by producing temporary (“pop-up”) art exhibits throughout the city, including Festival of Lights, a combination of window and outdoor electric light installations. Moxie Dada also collaborated with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust to produce the Juried Visual Art Exhibition—an extension of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. Moxie Dada deftly handles all aspects of large and small exhibitions: curatorial; space design; signage; promotion; installation and removal. Whispell is always on the lookout for new venues and artists to showcase. Pop-up exhibits promote the reinvention of underutilized buildings and inject vitality into the surrounding community. Moxie Dada’s next pop up exhibit, Retrospective: Vital Signs, by artist Maria Napoli, is on view March 9-31 at Elan Fine Arts in Sewickley (www.elanarts.com) Whispell has also partnered with Boxheart Gallery, an artist-run fine art and craft gallery with an international scope that offers custom framing, art preservation and restoration services as well. The team endeavor, called Mox Box Premier Art Consulting, works on public art projects, staging, social events and art consulting for art acquisition and art rental. Mox Box provides services to both residential and commercial clientele.

Style

Maven Contemporary kitchen proves it’s much more than a pretty face By Christina Kleiner ● Photos by Craig Thompson Having a great sense of style is more than just what one sees on the surface. It’s about how various parts come together as a whole. In fashion, designers don’t rely on one article of clothing to create a stylish outfit; they depend on each piece to work together as one entity. The same could be said for Regis and Jodi McClelland’s remodeled kitchen. An eclectic mix of stylish materials and colors was gathered together to create a seamless and fluid space. continued >

Forward thinking Prior to the renovation, Jodi spent 12 years cooking in the kitchen of her 1953 home. The previous owners added on to the house and remodeled the kitchen in the 1980s. “For its time, the kitchen was considered contemporary, but everything was white and the layout was poorly planned,” she says. “The range and refrigerator were on opposite sides of the room. I did a lot of running around when I cooked and I was exhausted!” As the parents of three children, the McClellands knew they needed a kitchen that was both convenient and durable, and after cooking in the kitchen for so many years, Jodi had her ideal floor plan mapped out. In addition to the basic necessities, she also wanted to incorporate a clean, modern look. Her challenge was finding a kitchen designer to help bring her vision to reality. “”My taste has evolved over the years, but I’ve always been a fan of contemporary design,” she says. “I wanted to find someone who would understand me.” Jodi was introduced to Natalia Dragunova, owner of Notion, LLC., and the two hit it off right away. “As soon as I met her, and walked through her house, I learned she had a great sense of style,” Dragunova recalls. “She was not afraid of things and I couldn’t wait to get started.” To meet Jodi’s requirements for a fully functional space, the new kitchen features an accessible layout. The appliances are in close proximity to each other as well as to the sink and food prep areas. The massive center island could be considered the base of operations. It is the perfect place for Jodi to catch up with the kids or help them with homework while she’s working on dinner. The island is also home to a vegetable sink, trash compactor, two dishwashers and a separate chilled filtered water dispenser. “The kids really take advantage of this and it prevents them from constantly opening the refrigerator,” Jodi says. Another custom feature is the pair of dry-erase board calendars hidden behind moveable cabinet panels. Considered Jodi’s “control center”, this keeps the family’s daily and monthly schedules on track and organized.

Smooth moves In terms of aesthetics, Jodi says her overall goal was to avoid a lot of decorative embellishments. “I had this vision of a linear look, with clean, refined edges and finishes,” she adds. The cabinets, made of hard maple veneers, feature a weathered oak stain with gray and brown undertones. A satin lacquer topcoat gives the veneers a polished finish, while simple stainless steel hardware shipped in from the United Kingdom adds just the right touch of shine. Jodi opted for very few wall cabinets, instead adding shelves to hold decorative accessories over the sink. “I didn’t want to crowd the kitchen with too many cabinets,” she says. “Plus, you can see this wall from the dining room and I thought it would be a great place to add a little drama and highlight some accessories.”

OVERLEAF: Low-profile bar stools from Crate and Barrel allow the island’s waterfall concrete countertop to take center stage. OPPOSITE: The EcoSmart Fire fireplace burns bioethanol, which is a renewable energy produced from agricultural feedstocks. TOP: The cabinetry features maple veneers with a weathered oak stain and satin lacquer topcoat. BOTTOM: Dry-erase board calendars can be conveniently hidden behind sliding cabinet panels.

The table was salvaged from the old kitchen. The original steel base was covered in veneers to match the cabinets and topped with a new piece of Caesarstone.

Creamy white concrete countertops create a smooth transition in the space. To offset it from the 2-inch-thick perimeter counters, the island features a bold waterfall counter with a 3-inchthick top. Dragunova recalls the day the island countertop was installed. “It was rolled in on a dolly and it took five or six guys to lift it up onto the cabinet base,” she says. “It is an amazing piece and essentially sets the tone in the kitchen.” Dragunova installed oversized white porcelain tiles for the backsplash. Similar to subway tile, the rectangular tiles blend into the background and create a subdued backdrop. “I needed a backsplash, but I had a lot of other things going on and I didn’t want the tiles to clash with anything I was placing on the shelves,” Jodi says.

Finishing touches Since Jodi spends a lot of time in the kitchen, she wanted to incorporate a few of her favorite elements—including a fireplace. To accommodate the request, Dragunova knocked out the wall separating the kitchen and dining room to install the dropin ventless fireplace. The bioethanol-burning fireplace, from EcoSmart Fire, is surrounded by natural stone and features a unique suspended shelf and cabinet panels on one side. “The fire creates a cozy environment, “ Jodi says. “If I’m preparing food for a dinner party, there’s nothing like lighting the fire to make it all the more enjoyable.”

Lighting was another important feature to Jodi. Like jewelry, the two-toned Corbett pendant lights accentuate the island and breakfast area. “As soon as Natalia showed them to me I couldn’t imagine anything else, ” Jodi adds. Just like complementing someone’s outfit, everyone who enters the McClellands’ kitchen has something to say. “One of the countertop installers compared the concrete island counter to a fashion runway. A friend of mine says it reminds her of a cocktail lounge,” Jodi says. “Either way I have fun cooking in here and just hanging out in here. It’s the perfect kitchen for us.”

White–the color of freshly fallen snow and wedding gowns. This color is universally known for illustrating innocence. However, depending on how it is used, it can elicit several different moods. | Pair crisp whites with royal blues for a preppy New England feel or accent ivory furniture with brass studs for an edgier feel. If it’s the classic look you yearn for, keep things simple with delicate lace features. When using the color white, the world is your oyster.

Frankly DeaR, I Prefer

Contemporary Today’s contemporary window treatments are “simply” beautiful!

By Kelly Z. Clark

like

many fashion and home decor trends, our window treatments have run the gamut from complicated

creations to simple statements. In the past we’ve seen elaborate curtain designs that incorporated yards and yards of fabric lavished with embellishments, and presented on stately curtain rods with carved finials. These window treatments were almost as opulent as a ball gown. Just ask Scarlett. Scarlett O’Hara was a complicated Southern belle who lived a charmed life, so it’s no wonder she wore her grand window treatments when she fell on hard times. And many can remember the classic Carol Burnett Show spoof of Gone with the Wind, where Carol also dons her window treatments, but includes the huge curtain rod as well. There’s nothing simple about that.

decoratingtrends The simplicity of today’s contemporary trends in window treatments wouldn’t do for Scarlett, but for many of us the look is a welcomed change. According to Millie Hammond, senior stylist for Fabricut Inc., a worldwide distributor of decorative fabrics, people have embraced the cleaner aesthetic of contemporary design as their lives have gotten busier. Companies like Fabricut are working hard to provide designers with contemporary fabrics and accessories their clients will feel at home with. For those who prefer the non-custom option, retailers are also offering contemporary ready-made window treatments.

It’s too loud, can you tone it down, please Color is what has changed most significantly in fabric designs for contemporary settings. By just reducing the number of colors in a fabric, manufacturers have captured designs that are more fitting to the quiet, serene look that is so popular today. Fabric with a large-scale design can appear somewhat understated and fitting to the scheme when the number of colors is limited and the tones are muted. Even intricate patterns such as Fabricut’s “Sister Sister” and “MacGyver” have a contemporary vibe when they are presented using simple, muted color combinations.

For those who prefer to limit their use of patterns, you can never go wrong with a solid curtain panel. Trendy colors range from white/cream to organic shades such as mushroom, jute, gravel and ash. What makes solid curtain panels so visually desirable is the use of fabrics with a texture. Linen weaves are hugely popular and can be nubby or smooth, weighty or very sheer. Emphasize the texture of the fabric by choosing a color that is similar to the wall color—either a shade lighter

or darker and see how the texture of the fabric becomes even more noticeable and interesting. This works very well with velvet fabrics also. Less is more in the actual design too, of course, so rather than pinch pleats or overlaying swags, the top of contemporary treatments feature straightforward folds attached to slick, unobtrusive drapery hardware (curtain rod, rings and finials). If it sounds too simple to be stylish, it’s not. The contemporary person will appre-

ciate the restrained, classy presentation and how it becomes a beautiful element within the room.

Pull the shades Not a fan of curtains, but still want a window treatment? Shades and blinds lend themselves beautifully to contemporary rooms because they are streamlined and can fit within the window. Fashion aside, blinds and shades are also functional treatments that provide light concontinued >

trol and privacy. Hunter Douglas’ design trend expert, Sally Morse, recommends the Silhouette and Pirouette shade systems to finish a contemporary window. To play up the contemporary look, Morse says, “If it has a slat, vein or louver, always select the wider slat for the cleanest look because you will have half as many slats and a better view to the outdoors.” Morse also suggests that you can use the optical illusion created by the horizontal lines of shades and blinds because they tend to elongate the look of a window when your eye follows the horizontal line. “No one ever asks for their windows to appear smaller,” Morse says. Morse also suggests the Skyline Gliding Window Panels which are super sleek and can be used to dress even the largest window expanse. These sliding panels are installed on a two-channel track that can split and open in the center or at the left or right side of the window. Hunter

Douglas offers a large selection of sheer and opaque fabrics for the system in natural and woven grass options. Believe it or not, roller shades have made an impressive comeback. If the last time you saw a roller shade it was white, plastic and in your grandma’s house, then you will want to see the latest in this window covering. Today’s roller shades come in a plethora of custom fabrics that include organic, woven looks and textured finishes that result in an uncomplicated but “wow” appearance for windows. So maybe Scarlett did get her curtain “swag” on, but today’s contemporary window treatments are so classy and stylish, they’re enough to rival Scarlett in all her ball gown glory.

Charm and Grace Housetrends takes a closer look at two winners from the 2011 Housing Excellence Awards By Hilary Daninhirsch | Photos by Craig Thompson and Rocky Raco Photography

Pittsburgh is home to many talented home builders and remodelers and each year the Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh honors a select few for their contributions to the industry. The following pages highlight two homes to receive 2011 Housing Excellence Awards. In addition to boasting a unique sense of architecture and style, both houses feature families who knew

exactly what they wanted—and what they didn’t want—in a new home.

Schrand home Photos by Craig Thompson

In the category of Best Single Family Home of the Year $651,000-$850,000, Mark and Julie Schrand worked closely with builder Ray Snoznik, owner of R.A. Snoznik Construction, to build their 6,800-square-foot, 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom brick home.

Julie, a Kentucky native, is most at home in a small town with a country feel. So when she and Mark were choosing the neighborhood in which to build their dream home, the small development in Murrysville seemed like the perfect place. With only sixteen homes on the cul de sac, Julie felt that it was the perfect location to grow their family, which now includes their two-year-old daughter. While the neighborhood practically sold itself, Julie says, “We bought this lot because we wanted a walk-out basement.” The Schrands moved from a small, older home in Churchill, a house with very little light and one not conducive to their social butterfly lifestyles. The new home is filled with light, even in the basement, to erase the “dungeon” feel that they had lived with previously. The Schrands wanted a formal feeling to their home, which they captured with their first-floor layout and designs because, “We enjoy entertaining and being surrounded by a lot of people.” The formal living room boasts a floor to ceiling fireplace, and the dining room

features a unique coffered ceiling comprised of sunken square panels, both of which add to the traditional feel of the first level. Adjacent to the dining room is the spacious kitchen that allows Julie to pursue her passion for cooking. The formal nature of the home continues into the kitchen with the dark, rich cabinetry. She particularly loves her island, which contains a wine cooler, and she gets a lot of use out of the double oven and warming drawer. Julie appreciates the open feel of the home so that she can watch her daughter at every angle. “We put the stairs in the center of the home so that I can hear her if she is in her room or her playroom.” Walk-out bays lead to the large deck from both the dining room and the formal living room, which is centered with the house to offer an unobstructed view of the huge back yard. “As you’re walking through the house, each room has its own character and that is what makes this house so amazing,” Snoznik says. The couple often entertains out-oftown guests, which was the impetus for

the full master bedroom suite and bathroom in the basement. “We want them to feel like they are in their own nice resort.” The remaining bedrooms and a playroom are located on the second floor. While Julie likes neutral colors, she chose reds and golds for the accent pieces. Avid travelers, the couple brightened up their hardwood floors with rugs collected from places like Egypt, India and Turkey, though Julie says you can always find a splash of black in the rugs. Perhaps the pride of her home is the basement theater room and the full wine cellar, which holds 200 bottles of wine, perfect for their frequent dinner parties. Snoznik points out that not a square foot is wasted in this house and the Schrands couldn’t agree more. “We use every bit of space in this house,” says Julie. “I wake up every day and I feel like I’ve been here for years.”

Nolan home Photos by Rocky Raco Photography

Tiffany and Nils Nolan are the owners of the Best Single Family Home of the Year in the $851,000$1,000,000 category. The 4,200-square-foot home was built by Paragon Homes. | Although the two have not met, the Schrands and the Nolans could be kindred spirits. Both families have young children, love to cook, entertain and feel that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Also, both families are new to the Pittsburgh area and frequently host out-of-town guests.

The Nolans lived in Stamford, Connecticut before moving to Peters Township and wanted to recreate the exterior and interior feel of a New England-style home but with contemporary features. “We wanted the kitchen to be the focal point of the home and we wanted it to have a country feel,” says Tiffany. The kitchen leads directly into the family room, which means that at gatherings, the hosts are not cut off from their guests. And like the Schrands, she can keep an eye on her young children while cooking. Tiffany chose a double oven, granite countertops and a Viking stovetop with six burners and a griddle. For the kitchen cabinets, which include recessed lighting, Tiffany chose a maple wood with a coffee glaze in order to show the rich detail of the cabinetry. “I wanted a lot of drawers instead of cupboards. When you have pots and pans, drawers are easier,” she adds. The butler’s pantry has proven itself to be an important factor in the Nolan home. Complete with a beverage center, a sink and plenty of storage space, the butler’s pantry can be accessed from the kitchen and dining room and comes in handy when the family entertains.

A large dining room was also a necessity. “I wanted to make sure that when we have dinner or birthday parties, we have enough room to expand the table,” Tiffany says, adding that the dining room in her Connecticut home was so small that it could barely fit her furniture. To accommodate their needs, the Nolans added a recessed wall to fit the large china cabinet, and they put pocket doors in the dining room so that the room can open into the family room for large gatherings. Tiffany’s color preferences are reflected throughout the house: sage greens, deep reds, and golds. “I wanted to pull colors from rugs or window treatments to use on the walls.” Her love of faux finishing is also depicted in the dining room.

Other details that help establish a colonial feel include wainscotting, elegant crown molding, and rich hardwood floors. These New England touches perfectly complement the more contemporary features, such as Nils’ impressive office, the spacious laundry room and the master bathroom, which features double sinks, recessed medicine cabinets and neutral earth-toned tile. Tiffany loves the flow of her new home, as does Paragon’s marketing director, Steve Fink. “We think that it’s extremely important to offer our clients unique home designs and ideas. This allows them to really get a home designed around how they plan to use it, whether that is in the first year they live there, or long down the road. It’s all about planning.”
