a letter from the publisher

In France, cooking is a serious art form and a national sport.

’’

—Julia Child

Pittsburgh has undeniable passion for both our sports and our arts. Waiting with bated breath for Steelers preseason, and the newest exhibit to open at The Carnegie Museums is just something we instinctively do! That said, I think we can all relate to Julia’s passion. Her love of cooking was contagious. Thanks to her many television shows and copious cookbooks, she taught generations of Americans not only to hone their cooking capabilities, but their eating habits as well. In fact, Julia’s own kitchen served as the set for three of her cooking shows and now resides in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Complete with all the modern culinary amenities, it’s no wonder that the kitchens of today are taking a cue from a gastronomic master. With a handful of kitchen renovations and scrumptious recipes perfect for a summer barbeque, our annual Kitchen and Bath Issue is a tribute of sorts to Julia Child. We’re also highlighting some of the newest appliances available on the market and featuring a few of our favorite master bath escapes. As usual, we couldn’t fit everything into these pages, so be sure to check out Housetrends.com for even more photos, recipes and inspiration. Enjoy the rest of your summer. We’ll see you in August when our Living Green Issue arrives in your mailbox.

Sizzling Kitchen Remodels Explore a trio of Greater pittsburgh kitchens and see what makes them special

By Karen Bradner | Local Kitchen Highlights by Christina Kleiner | Photos by Craig Thompson

The telltale signs of a dated kitchen are easy to spot. It might be the paint color on the walls, the knobs on the appliances, the faucet at the sink, or the laminate on the countertops. F How do those compare to the signs of today’s kitchen? F We’ve asked a cross section of Pittsburgh area homeowners and the contractors and designers behind their kitchens to share the latest and greatest in designs, features, and appliances. Take a look at their choices to see how well your current kitchen stands up. Or use their input to get cooking on your own remodel.

Light It Up All kitchens need a mixture of task, feature and ambient lighting. “Recessed can lights brighten the space,” says kitchen designer Amy Speranza. “In addition to under-cabinet lights, we added lighting to the curio cabinets on each side of the refrigerator and in the leaded glass-front doors in the island. These make great night lights without wasting energy.” continued >

And the Survey Says… We’ve checked in with those who know the latest trends in kitchen design—members of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). In an NKBA survey, over 350 designers were asked to cite the materials they’ve recently incorporated into kitchen designs. Their responses provide insight into design for 2012 and beyond.* 1

1 Transitional over traditional For the first time since the NKBA began tracking annual design trends, traditional is no longer the most popular design. Transitional, which is a blend of traditional and contemporary, is now the most common style.

2 Shift in the wood Cherry wood has consistently been the first or second most popular type of wood for cabinetry, jockeying for the top spot with maple each year. However, designers are slowly shifting away from it. Some lesser-used woods being specified more often: oak (now 22%); walnut (13%); birch (15%), and bamboo, which has doubled from 5% last year to 10%.

RedHot Wonder Master bathroom renovation offers a spicy twist By Joan Pearlstein Dunn | Photos by Craig Thompson Executing a demolition and renovation project in a 1960s home will generally throw a few curve balls, but that wasn’t a deterrent for two transplants from New York. When Laurel and Alan Freeman purchased their contemporary, mid-century home, they knew exactly what they wanted, and meticulously developed a plan to do it. Laurel, an interior designer and principal of Laurel Interiors, relocated to Pittsburgh with her husband and began the renovations prior to moving in. continued >

Refreshing accouterments The couple brought in contractor Carl Lieberman, owner of Lieberman Group, to do the overhaul. The biggest challenge for the contractor was the layout and size of the bathroom. “We were trying to fit a large shower, tub, double-sink vanity and a toilet into the space,” explains Lieberman. “We were able to take the existing master closet and combine it with the bath space to enlarge the area.” They also partnered with Liz Murphy, of Liz Murphy Design, who acquainted them with some of the local resources in Pittsburgh. “Working with the Freemans in their mid-century home was a joy for me because it was a home that was unique to Pittsburgh,” says Murphy. “It was refreshing to work with such an open interior plan, with lots of windows that overlooked a beautiful wooded site.” Laurel had the visual blueprint, and Murphy helped her to find materials to facilitate the project. “There was a significant amount of infrastructure that had to be built here to execute the project,” explains Murphy. “Plumbing lines had to be moved, drainage was an issue, and ceiling heights had to be factored in.” The couple wanted to have a shower and bath chamber, so both were merged into one contained space. Substantial floor to ceiling shower doors give a grand entrance, but are simply a means to prevent water from wetting floors or splashing the vanity. “It’s

an adult space that is kid friendly,” points out Laurel. “We have a soaking tub for adults, but it has a wide lip which allows us to sit on the edge while we bathe our child.” The shower boasts wall jets that can be tilted to accommodate people of all different heights, and a rain dome showerhead conjures up feelings of being in an outdoor, summer shower. Athens Silver Cream, a light and neutral marble from Ann Sacks, covers the walls and floor of this spacious chamber. The striking cream marble is characterized by a threadlike striated pattern that is delicate, yet distinguishing. A rectangular pattern comprised of stone pebbles was added to the back wall above the tub to create textural interest without adding any color. The pebbles generate a spa-like backdrop, giving the bathroom a natural and earthy feel.

Splash of color To play against the soothing neutral tones, Laurel decided to warm things up a bit with a splash of red. Playing off the red accents in their master bedroom, the spicy hot wall sets a great backdrop for the orchid plant and white fixtures. Walls are illuminated by a set of electric mirrors with built-in lighting tucked behind them. Subtle lighting was also installed below the wallhung vanity and adds a warm glow across the tile floor. continued >

Loure faucets, by Kohler, add a blend of graceful design and cutting edge functionality. The faucets allow for precise water flow and temperature control, and feature a low-flow aerator that allows for water savings of up to 30%. They are a discreet complement to the square motif that is repeated throughout the shower and tub fixtures. Four playful prints add whimsy to the room, and a dramatic pop of color. “They are very clean and architectural,” points out Laurel. “They lighten things up and add a little humor to the space.” The overhead Solatube skylight was installed to shed some much needed natural sunlight in a room without windows. It’s a flexible tube that winds its way through the ceiling, allowing sunshine to be reflected into the room

The house was constructed as a contemporary home in the 1960s, and the couple kept with the integrity of that time period during renovations. At all times, their focus was to make sure that the decorating style would be sympathetic with that type of architecture. Their bathroom takes on that concept with the cathedral ceilings, and long narrow space, but brings it into the 20th century. The contractor loved the way the colors and textures fused together in perfect synergy. “It was great working with Laurel because she knew exactly what she wanted, had a great eye for design, and came up with some unique strategies,” says Lieberman. “In the end, it was great to see it all come together.”

Designer Bathroom Tips from ASID PA West Chapter President, Nancy Barsotti, FASID Just like flowers, design shows with new products pop-up all over the country in the spring, and the Kitchen & Bath Show in Chicago was no exception. Vanity cabinets are increasingly like furniture. The new looks are wall mounted and “floating” cabinetry. Cabinet interiors are also more functional with pull out drawers, LED illuminations and soft closures. Although manufacturers exhibited wood finishes, laminates, and decorative door designs, white is still the number one finish choice. Personally, I think bathrooms are a great way to use color and express your own style. My favorite sink is Axor’s sleek and functional “Bouroullec,” comprised of a rectangular washbasin with soft, rounded corners and integral smaller plateaus arranged around the sink at varying heights. A freestanding bathtub, placed in the middle of a room is the glamorous, luxury trend. Companies like Lacava, Wetstyle and Axor show them in very organic shapes and sizes. Showers keep getting larger too, boosting built-in seats and multiple heads. All have automatic temperature and flow control settings to allow every user to have their own pre-set preferences at the touch of a button. When you are renovating, add heating under ceramic tile floors. One of the best suppliers is Warmly Yours, known for their superior energy efficient array of products. The other big trend is concealed tank toilets. Geberit is one of the industry leaders with their wall-hung toilets and contemporary design. And speaking of toilets, manufacturers like Toto are conserving water with their dual flush 1-G Double Cyclone model, which uses only one gallon of water per flush. Many of these new trends are beautiful, functional with a touch of whimsy and definitely high-tech. Manufacturers are setting out to turn our bathrooms into relaxing spa-like spaces. HTPT0612.037

Funky design, advanced function and energy efficiency are at the forefront. Whether it’s a dishwasher that is as silent as the night, a refrig-

erator that chills your drink in minutes or a stovetop that practically doubles as a personal chef, you can find it here. Whether your kitchen is your comfort zone or whether you want to minimize the time you spend there, these technologically advanced products from some of the world’s finest appliance manufacturers will make your life easier.

Additional features include a selection of water pressure variants with precise water temperature settings and a flow-through detergent dispenser. BELOW: Photo courtesy of Fisher & Paykel

Refrigerators keep it cool Sub-Zero:

The Pro 48 from this industry darling and pioneer of dual refrigeration helps consumers keep food fresher, longer. Says Michele Bedard, vice president of marketing, “All Sub-Zero PRO 48 models meet rigorous Department of Energy standards for residential use, consuming less energy than a 100-watt light bulb over the course of a year.” Bedard points out other features that make it stand out, such as full extension drawers, interchangeable refrigerator drawer dividers, and a pair of two-gallon stainless steel washable and oven-safe bins that fit under any refrigerator shelf to store smaller items. She added, “The PRO 48 contains two compressors that help maintain proper air conditions and prevent odor transfer between the refrigerator and freezer sections.”

Liebherr: German manufacturer Liebherr produces built-in, freestanding and fully integrated refrigerators. Some features of Liebherr fridges include: separate cooling circuits, reversible doors, LED lighting, a large storage capacity, a touch control system behind the door, BioFresh drawers on telescopic rails and a self-closing mechanism on freezer drawers. Cookware keeps it hot Wolf:

Michele Bedard says that Wolf’s brand new sleek, stainless steel convection steam oven is 25% larger than others of its kind in the market. “The external boiler heats water quickly and efficiently and can be refilled without interrupting the cooking process. The oven’s perfected precision technology senses the proper timing and allocation of steam, consistently creating ideal cooking environments for a broad range of foods and recipes.” And busy moms will appreciate the ability to decrease cooking time by up to 25%: “The Wolf Gourmet feature properly adjusts the time and temperature based on the amount and size of the food being prepared.”

Thermador:

Techies, meet Thermador’s Freedom Induction Cooktop, which won accolades for its innovative full-surface induction stove. There are no traditional burners, so the touch-screen interface senses a pot’s shape and position as well as controls timing and intensity. Electromagnets are the technology behind induction cooking, and this cooktop uses 48 heating elements equipped with sensors.

Bertazzoni: This Italian manufacturer offers numerous choices in cookware, including electric, gas, induction, convection, built-in or freestanding. Its Segmented Cooktop received the Best in Show award at this year’s Kitchen and Bath Industry Show. This unique 36-inch cooktop combines the power of gas, electric griddle and induction cooking in one package. LEFT: Photo courtesy of Bertazzoni

Art of Grilling

It’s never too late to learn how to grill the perfect cut of meat. Jason Capps, chef and owner of Bella Sera, offers these grilling tips. • A steak should only be turned once. When lines from the cooking grate appear on the meat and turn black it is time to turn the food. A thicker cut, if more than 1 ½ inches thick, may need to be turned three times to get it cooked through the center. • Use oil or cooking spray on grates when grilling low fat meats and other foods.

Ancho Chili Pork Tenderloin

Pucker Up Raspberry Lemonade

1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons chili powder 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cumin 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 pork tenderloin

1 can raspberry lemonade concentrate 3 cups water Juice from ½ lime Juice from ½ lemon 1 can Sprite ½ cup fresh raspberries ¼ cup fresh blueberries Fresh mint

Mix first 8 ingredients in a bowl and coat pork tenderloin. Let pork sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Place tenderloin on grill, turning to sear all sides, grilling for approximately 15-18 minutes or until an internal temperature of 140 degrees has been reached. Let pork rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serves 6.

Mix liquid ingredients in pitcher. Add raspberries and blueberries. Pour in glass, over ice. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Go to Housetrends.com to get the recipe for BBQ Bliss Potatoes.

• Add seasoning or marinade at least one hour before grilling to let the flavor sink in.

Chalet-inspired abode at home in Peters Township By Joan Pearlstein Dunn | Photos by Craig Thompson

There is no end to spectacular in this spacious, but comfortable, home in Peters Township. When Greg went to look at the 11 acres of land that

his friend was selling, he bought it on the spot. “I fell in love with the property because of the

old trees,” says Greg. “I knew this was where I wanted to build my home, and called Lori to come see it.” With the help of the fire department, the couple burned down an old farmhouse on the property, then drew a new house and built it. continued >

Comfortable formality Over 200 tons of stone were brought in for the exterior and took masons a year to chisel each stone, in a perfect mosaic pattern. All of the beams framing the portico were brought in from Canada. Keeping with the concept of casual and comfortable, the home has seven fireplaces, and also includes six porches where the homeowners can kick back and unwind.

A grand piano adds an air of formality to the stunning living room, which features a Tuscan design. TOP LEFT: The grand foyer offers a captivating glimpse of all three floors. BOTTOM LEFT: The richly appointed dining room boasts a tray ceiling with a faux-leather finish. OPENING SPREAD: The home’s exterior is covered in wood beams and over 200 tons of carved stone.

Inside, an expansive and architecturally stunning entry sweeps 360 degrees around and shoots three stories high. “We didn’t want something typical, and preferred an entry where everything would open up as soon as you walk in the front

door,” explains Greg. “Our architect studied in Italy and the design he used is rooted to his studies there.” The living room flows seamlessly into the dining room, with immaculate furnishings unifying the two rooms. The

couple worked with Brad Halstead, owner of Bradley Michaels Furniture, on the interior design and ornamentation. “Due to the fact that there is a grand piano, this room is a little more formal than the rest of the house,” explains Halstead. “But we continued >

housetrends greater pittsburgh 57 054-060 nFEA ParadiseAtHome.indd 57

6/25/12 2:20:22 PM

still needed it to blend in, so we used a Tuscan, but elegant type of look.” A French lace sofa and barrel wing chairs frame the exquisite room. Looking out to the gorgeous view of the landscape and governor’s drive, the formal dining room has majestic eminence. An inset tray ceiling has a faux-leather finish, and anchors a generously proportioned wrought iron chandelier. During the holidays, the couple extends their dining table through the archway to the living room, eliminating the need for a kids’ table. “We like to keep everyone together,” says Lori.

Family-friendly interior Strategically positioned in the center of the home, the kitchen is a multi-purpose, multisectioned room that gets a good workout from family and friends. Not just for eating, the room is a magnet for homework, socializing or just hanging out. “Typically when we

come together for a holiday or function, we’ll easily have 25 people gathering in here,” says Greg. “We put a premium on comfort verses big.” White oak floors were hand-selected from a sawmill in Pennsylvania. “It was actually an interesting day because they were doing it all by hand and they allowed us to determine how much we wanted it distressed,” tells Lori.

58 housetrends.com 054-060 nFEA ParadiseAtHome.indd 58

6/25/12 2:20:50 PM

As in most homes, the family room gets the most use. “It is the grandest scale of all the sitting rooms, and has an Alpine chalet feel to it,” says Halstead. Easily seating a dozen people, the sofa is a popular gathering spot for the family. A coffered, beamed ceiling and walnut floors keep this sprawling room warm and cozy. Equally grand is the billiard room. In spite of its size, Greg and Lori feel it is the coziest room of them all. “More important than the pool table, we put a ping pong cover over it and have intense games with the whole family,” says Greg. The room has three flat-panel televisions, opens up to a full-scale bar and is in

full view of the swimming pool outside. “One of the reasons we have three TV’s in this room is so when we all get together, we can watch multiple sporting events at the same time,” explains Greg. “We can have large groups in here. After my son won the state championship for soccer, we were able to entertain one hundred people in this room.” TOP LEFT: A massive two-tiered island sits at the center of the impressive cook-friendly kitchen. BOTTOM LEFT: The family often tops the pool table with a ping pong cover for friendly competitions. ABOVE: This oversized sectional in the family room comfortably seats up to 12 people.

TOP LEFT: An ornate shower claims center stage in the large master bathroom. TOP RIGHT: The master bedroom is decorated in soft white and beige hues. BOTTOM RIGHT: The back yard houses an inviting freeform pool complete with a waterfall.

Set apart from the rest of the décor, when entering the master bedroom, everything goes to white. It has a softer and more relaxed color palette than the rich warm tones beyond. They intentionally lightened things up to keep it tranquil and set it apart from the rest of the house. Directly off the bedroom is a spa-like oasis with a crystal clear floating shower centered in the space. Sparse, but spectacular, the white cabinets, tile floors, and a gorgeous view of the front lawn are all that this master bathroom needs.

Fun in the sun The outside of the home has the same melody as the inside; everything has been planned around family. The meticulously maintained yard offers a park-like setting with separate cozy seating areas, making it easy to have multiple gatherings in one large space. Similar to a wading pool, there is a water patio where people can sit when they don’t want to get totally wet. “It is much like when we go to the beach,” says Lori, who credits Bruce Evanovich and Mike Hodak with creating their outdoor living space. “We love sitting at the edge of the ocean reading a book.”

While some of the family enjoys the peace and quiet of the water patio, other members prefer spending time under the steady stream of the pool’s waterfall. “This house is all about family,” says Greg with a smile. With the glorious scenery and array of activities that the home has to offer, it would seem that when this family wants to vacation, they needn’t look further than their own back yard.

For over three decades, the name “Vallozzi” has been synonymous with Italian excellence in Western Pennsylvania. Known for its award winning wine list, delectable cuisine, and elegant dining environment, it is safe to say that Vallozzi’s is second to none. Combine that classic distinction with a modern, Tuscan flair and voilà! Welcome downtown’s newest addition, Vallozzi’s Pittsburgh. Situated along the 5th Avenue side of Market Square, Vallozzi’s Pittsburgh has taken over the historical structure that was once home to the G.C. Murphy building. Restaurant owner, Julian Vallozzi, had a dream to turn the difficult, multi-leveled space into a contemporary yet comfortable Italian eatery. Ensuring that no details would be spared, Vallozzi joined forces with visionary Charles Stern and his designer Sara Hardy of Basic Concept Interiors to help him achieve his masterpiece.

Stone archways are found throughout the restaurant, creating a Tuscan feel when moving from room to room.

“Our vision was Italian country with a contemporary twist, all while maintaining a feeling of warmth,” explained Stern, “We wanted everybody to feel comfortable.” All aspects of the restaurant ooze easy elegance, starting with the eclectic lobby, which is lined with travertine stone floors and reclaimed ironwood pieces flanking the left wall. Mirroring the woodwork and creating a perfect balance of nature and art, hang modern paintings done by local artist, Michael Lotenero. Design and functionality meet just behind the concierge stand, where a wall of wooden shelves boasts much of Vallozzi Pittsburgh’s coveted wine selection, a focal point of the restaurant. “Our wine drinkers arrive, see this wall, and they fall in love,” Vallozzi says, “It’s fun to watch people walk in and say ‘that’s what I want to drink tonight.’” And with good wine comes good food, food that is prepared in an extremely complex, well-appointed kitchen full of the finest specialty equipment. Enter the dining room: Stern and Vallozzi modernized the space from the top down, quite literally, starting with the exposed beams in the ceiling. Like the majority of the building materials, the reclaimed wood beams found throughout the bar and dining rooms, are relatable and came from an old barn in Harrisburg. The texture rich bluff stones on the walls and around the doorways appear as if continued ❱ HTPT0612.061

they occurred naturally, like a wine cave in Italy. However, maybe the most stunning facet of the formal dining room is the 40-foot pastoral mural, designed and painted locally by Lauri Mancuso. “We wanted the mural to look like it had been here for 100 years and the space around it was modernized,” says Vallozzi, “Lauri painted the canvas, beat it up, dropped it, everything to make it look authentic.” Both textured and tactile, much of the furniture derived from the concept of being appealing not only to the eye but also to the touch – counter and tabletops were all handmade of live edge wood, in a black walnut finish, while the chairs were upholstered in fine, Italian fabrics, even some in neutral tweed. Soft lighting sets the mood, gleaming out of the large, opaque over-

head fixtures placed carefully amongst the beams. Craving a more intimate space? Adjacent to the main dining area are two tastefully and functionally designed private and semi-private dining rooms ideal for entertaining. The attractive full service bar buzzes with young, contemporary energy and the seamless continuation of exquisite detail. Geared towards the urban, happy-hour crowd, Vallozzi’s bar features flat screen televisions hung in wood niches amongst the wide selection of wines and spirits, glossy high-top tables, booths with cork-like benches, and a tantalizing meat and cheese bar. Stern adds, “It is a bar; however, we wanted it to be as comfortable as the dining room in terms of a place to enjoy your meal.” HTPT0612.061

FAR LEFT: The semi-private dining room is perfect for intimate events and feels very reminiscent of old Tuscany with its exposed wooden beams and stone finish on the wall. RIGHT: Known for their exquisite wine collection, Vallozzi’s highlights this feature in a modern way by displaying several bottles at the far end of the lobby.

ABOVE RIGHT: Decorated in the traditional Italian red and white, the Mattiniero by Vallozzi offers a casual breakfast and lunch spot.

In short, Vallozzi’s Pittsburgh is proving to have it all: from the lobby, to the dining rooms, and into the bar, we are confident that the stylish design will impress even the most particular patron.

Behold the masterpiece, the “Capolavoro” of Vallozzi’s Pittsburgh, the perfect marriage of an inviting Italian atmosphere blended with experience and passion for food and wine.
