Interior designer Dorothy Draper was known for her use of bold colors and patterned fabrics. She wasn’t afraid to blur the lines between classic and modern design. Yet, while she was the pioneer of Modern Baroque style, one traditional element that signified the essence of home remained an important staple in her design process: the fireplace. This is one of the reasons we couldn’t resist featuring Chris and Ray Pronto’s living room on the cover of our last issue of the year. Beautifully decorated, the home personifies the true meaning of family and the holiday season. In addition to the Pronto family, we are showcasing the homes of a few other local families, all of which offer the sights and sounds of the holiday season, each with a unique twist on festive decorating. We are proud to also be featuring a heartwarming piece on local nonprofit organization, Family House, and all that they do to make their guests feel right at home during this time of the year. On behalf of the entire Housetrends family, Happy Holidays! We’ll see you after the New Year, when we kick off 2012 with our annual Contemporary/City Living Issue. Sincerely,

Couple feature 15 Christmas trees in their Cranberry township home by Danielle Krouse | Photos by Craig Thompson

Decorating for Christmas is a tradition that Rose holds very dear to her heart. She watched her mother create a festive home when she was a child and that spirit sparked her own interest in sprinkling a little bit of Christmas throughout every room of her own home. Rose and her husband, Larry, express a lot of their holiday cheer through Christmas trees, 15 to be exact, each with its own theme and inspiration. F We invite you to take a peek at some of the trees, and other jovial décor in Rose and Larry’s home. Enjoy!

Great room

This is the most traditional tree in the house and it’s also the couple’s family tree where they open gifts on Christmas morning. There are a lot of hand-made ornaments, as well as collector’s pieces creating an eclectic and highly personal collection. The tree is topped with a traditional angel looking down. One special set of decorations has sparked a new tradition for Rose and her family. Three wooden Santa sculptures are housed in the great room, which have been carved from the couple’s previous Christmas trees. The first Santa was given to the couple for the first Christmas they spent in the house. Always having at least one fresh tree, the couple plans on adding a new Santa each year. continued >

kitchen

The tree in the kitchen stands near a cozy fireplace and is adorned with a collection of fun ornaments—many given as gifts. Most of the ornaments are food-related and one of Rose’s favorites is a stack of pancakes with maple syrup dripping down the sides. The yummy-themed tree is topped with a cheerful red bow and two gingerbread people can be found sitting on the tree skirt to complete the look.

dining room

The dining room décor started with Rose thinking about birds and nature. The tree stands close to the table and features hand-blown glass bird ornaments. The theme travels to the dining table where place settings include bird nests and cranberries. Rose comes up with all the room themes and décor ideas on her own. “I have a fine arts degree, and I think I just have that artistic bug and Christmas is the time it really comes out,” she says. continued >

“I’m a reall y passionate gardener, so I went with a nature-the med room,” says Rose.

they wouldn’t expect it,” says Rose.

powder room

Unexpected rooms, like a small powder room, don’t go unnoticed in this house. Knowing that plenty of friends and family will see this room throughout the holiday season, Rose wanted to make sure a tree ended up there too. She describes the room as a winter wonderland, with Father Christmas and a fully decorated tree on hand.

master bedroom

Multiple trees and garland adorn the master bedroom, complete with plenty of Christmas lights. “It makes it a great and festive place to unwind, and you just appreciate everything around you when you’re in your own bedroom,” Rose says.

master bath

Hands down the most feminine tree in the house can be found in the master bath. Dubbed the “diva tree,” it features ornaments such as miniature fur coats, shoes and handbags. “This is where my husband is very accommodating because this is a very girlie tree,” Rose says. But she loves having a tree in the bathroom because it’s a festive way to start or end her day. continued >

Must-have essentials for gardeners By Phyllis Gricus Head to tool to toe, having the right equipment can enhance your gardening efficiency, as well as your appearance. While I’m not usually concerned with my “look” while gardening, occasionally I want to embrace my inner Martha Stewart and shed my usual frumpish gardening attire for something that’s both stylish and effective. Here are a few of my top picks if you are looking to improve your own gardening ensemble or searching for a gift for your favorite gardener. continued >

Years ago I bought a garden tool that I absolutely cannot do without. It’s not marketed widely, but is still available to those in the know. And you should know about this one. Part trowel and part rake, the Hen-Feathers Trake™ is two tools in one lightweight, well-balanced design. Use the trowel end to dig the hole for a container plant, then use the rake end to break up pot-bound root systems before planting. Or, if after garden digging you find that soil clumps need to be broken up, you’ve got a handy rake right on hand. Weeds are the bane of gardeners, and weeding

is the most frequent and tedious chore of all. If I’m heading out to weed, I’ve got my CobraHead® in hand. The curved head with its thin sharp blade captures weeds even in the tightest of spots. You shove the blade in behind the weed and pull, a very natural and ergonomic motion. It’s also invaluable for planting rows of seeds. If you find getting down on your knees hard to do, try the CobraHead® Long Handle. I haven’t used this one myself, but it has received great reviews.

Heads up Gearing up for gardening should begin with a hat to protect you from heat exhaustion and sunburn. Tula hats are hand woven from palms that grow in the warm coastal areas of Mexico. This sustainable fiber is harvested twice a year and, when woven into a Tula hat, offers sun protection with a UPF 50+ rating. The fashionable hats are pliable, packable and available in men’s, women’s, and unisex styles.

A place for tools I find aprons to be indispensable, more of a tool than a garment, and I always wear one while gardening. All of mine now have holes in the pockets from the sharp end of tools, because they weren’t designed specifically for carrying gardening tools. The new gardening apron from Dramm (the folks that make those colorful watering wands and hoses) has come to the rescue. In addition to a plethora of colors, the apron is so practical and durable. The apron has three pockets, two smaller ones on the sides for tools and one larger one in the middle that holds garden cuttings. This pocket unzips so it is easy to unload garden cuttings.

After years of wearing old sneakers, winter boots, or oversized men’s gardening boots, my feet have found happiness in the Scrub Lawn & Garden boot by Muck Boots. I originally spied them on the professional gardeners at Chanticleer Gardens, in Wayne, Pennsylvania. After hearing their glowing testimony, I had to get a pair. Scrub boots are waterproof, warm, breathable, and comfortable to wear even on the hottest of days. They are an investment, but they’re worth their lightweight, flexible, semi-rigid rubber-reinforced toe in gold! They come in both men’s and women’s sizes. Mine are only in their second season and show no sign of wear.

Storytelling Lastly, a tool for the soul: Every grower needs to get off those knees now and then and relax, and there is simply no more enjoyable reading for a real gardener than GreenPrints magazine. Every issue of this award-winning little “Weeders Digest” shares the personal, not instructional, side of gardening with a full bouquet of true gardener’s stories—funny, inspiring, and heartwarming. Seeing a new issue of this “gardener’s secret” in my mailbox is as exciting as spotting that first hyacinth in the spring. Two Pittsburgh homes celebrate the season inside and out By Christina Kleiner Photos by Craig Thompson except where noted

A popular holiday tradition is underway here in Pittsburgh, and across the country. Families, young and old, are piling into their cars at dusk and driving through neighborhood after neighborhood, marveling at all the homes lit up for the season. As soon as you find your favorite house, you automatically begin to wonder and imagine what lies behind the front door. Luckily, we found two Pittsburgh families kind enough to open their garland-wrapped front doors to give us a peek into their holiday worlds.

Here comes Santa Claus

Santa’s sleigh, filled with gifts, and characters from The Nutcracker greet family, friends and passersby in front of Kirk and Fran Stephen’s Sewickley home. The couple got into the holiday decorating spirit shortly after moving into their French-country home in 2004. They enlisted the expertise of interior designer Karolyn Spagnolo to help them create their winter wonderland. “Karolyn was our interior designer when we first moved in,” says Fran. “Since she knew our tastes it was only natural to have her help us decorate our home for the holidays.” Spagnolo suggested creating the custom sleigh, which rests on metal runners and boasts a vinyl seat and lanterns. “The toys and packages are waterproof and anchored down so they don’t blow away,” she adds. The front porch is draped with dramatic garland accented with glistening white lights, rich red ribbon, ornaments and strands of beads. “Coming home at night is a treat,” Fran says. “Pulling into the driveway and seeing the house lit up is just beautiful.” The front door opens to reveal a foyer packed with wrapped packages surrounding a large Santa Claus statue. Garland incorporating greenery and red and gold ribbon is draped along the staircase railing and across the balcony. Spagnolo says the foyer is one of the most important areas when it comes to holiday decorating and sets the tone for the rest of your home during the holidays. Fran recalls the first year Spagnolo decorated the foyer. “I was at work while Karolyn and her team decorated the house,” she says. “And when I walked through the front door I was astounded to find this magical wonderland. I was speechless that first year.” The Stephens say they use the foyer as the backdrop for their family photos. Their children, 11-year-old Luke and 4-year-old Grace sit on the same step every year for their holiday picture. “It’s great to capture those memories and see how much they’ve grown year after year.”

Home for the holidays Ray and Chris Pronto’s Moon Township home has a distinct traditional personality and is decorated in rich cranberry and gold tones. They also turned to Spagnolo to help them transform their home for the holidays. “I always recommend playing off the color scheme in a home, and this is what I did in the Prontos’ house,” Spagnolo says. Ten-inch cranberry ribbon, beads, berries and ornaments are intertwined with the greenery framing the front entry and hanging on the lamppost. This theme is carried right through the front door and into the foyer. Packages wrapped in an assortment of holiday colors encompass the Santa Claus figure at the base of the staircase, while garland accented with red plaid ribbon runs up the railing. “These decorations perfectly complement the rich woodwork seen in the foyer,” Spagnolo says. Chris says the living room is her favorite place to relax during the holidays. “I love to sit in front of the fireplace and enjoy the Christmas tree.” Spagnolo says homeowners should focus on decorating three key interior areas: the tree, the fireplace mantel and the entry. “These three elements will put you, and your guests, in the holiday spirit,” she says. For the mantel in the Prontos’ living room, each year Spagnolo hangs garland made of white pine needles, pinecones, ornaments and lights, all in colors matching the surrounding décor. A complementary wreath, reindeer and wrapped packages complete the look. “I really look forward to this time of year,” Spagnolo says. “The best part is seeing the faces of the Pronto and Stephen families, it makes everything we do so much more meaningful.”

Building one of a kind custom homes on individual home sites is nothing new to Heartland Homes. In fact, it wasn’t until six years after the company was founded in 1984 that Heartland began building entire communities as it does today. Heartland Everywhere was created in 2008 to rekindle the unique craftsmanship and magic that occurs when you match the perfect home with the perfect home site – wherever it may be.

For Wayne and Mary Murphy, the inspiration for their Heartland Everywhere home began during a four-year stay in the English countryside, right along the outskirts of London. Choosing Heartland was simple. After visiting a friend’s Heartland patio home in Peter’s Township, Wayne and Mary knew that they wanted something with a similar open flow, a first floor master, and room for family, friends, and entertaining. The Murphys had no trouble deciding on the perfect location for their prospective home. Just adjacent to the Sewickley Victorian-style house where Mary and Wayne had been residing since their return from England, was open land ideal for their Heartland vision. Wayne met with Heartland sales representative, Dennis Hewitt, to discuss the architectural possibilities of this specialty home. Dennis suggested that Wayne draw exactly what he and Mary were looking for and Heartland would make it happen. And after two months of perfecting the drawings, Heartland designers gave the green light to build almost the exact house the Murphys are living in today. The focal point of the Murphys’ home is the oversized, rustic wooden table in the great room, just off of the wonderfully bright white kitchen. It possesses the English charm that Mary so dearly loves and is surrounded by an eclectic array of wooden dining chairs.

Want to see more? Visit www.HeartlandEverywhere.com The table is situated underneath two stunning wrought iron chandeliers that really draw all of the attention immediately to the table. Definitive windows, French doors, exposed wooden beams, and simple wrought iron railings really set the tone for the entire house. These elements combined with the open floor plan and neutral furniture give the home an airy, natural feel. The couple enjoys spending time in the spacious upstairs library, as well as the several delightful porches that their humble abode has to offer. Top: The upstairs library loft is one of Wayne’s favorite spots in the house to relax and take in all of the views. During construction, Wayne set up, “The New Murphy House” website, with photographs and week-to-week details on the construction of their Heartland Everywhere home, so that friends and family could keep up with the astonishing progress. In a mere six months, Heartland Homes did more then just build the Murphys dream home; they made it their goal to make sure that every detail was exactly how the couple had envisioned. “I feel that Heartland has filled the need and has become the major spec. builder in Allegheny County,” says Wayne. “Our experience with Heartland was wonderful. They were happy to accommodate every request and suggestion through the entire process, and really were very fair.” Wayne and Mary could not be happier with the finished product of their Heartland Everywhere home. They have already begun to make memories with their children and grandchildren in the home, and are anxious to make many more.

Nestled in the heart of the Oakland Shadyside neighborhoods, stand four of the city’s most lovingly restored homes. However, it isn’t the architectural grandeur or the exquisite interiors that sets these homes apart, it is their heartwarming purpose.

Home away from home These little-known treasures that complement Pittsburgh’s elite medical service is Family House, Inc., a local non-profit corporation operated by a voluntary board of directors. For nearly three decades, Family House has been providing patients and their families from all over the world with comfortable, affordable, and safe living conditions during their medical treatment for serious or life-threatening illnesses in Pittsburgh. Since 1983, Family House has been a “home away from home” for more than 120,000 individuals, and continues to accommodate over 10,000 guests annually. In total, the four beautifully equipped homes boast 160 guest rooms, relaxing common areas, state-of-the-art community kitchens, quaint outside living spaces, and complimentary transportation to and from the surrounding medical centers. Most importantly, Family House creates a unique and supportive home that enables guests to heal comfortably and form long-lasting bonds through shared experiences. continued >

OVERLEAF: Started in 1983, Family House now consists of four homes providing comfortable living arrangements for over 10,000 guests each year. LEFT: Volunteers make sure each room, including here in the dining area, offers a festive and inviting atmosphere.

OPPOSITE: The great room boasts a nine-foot Christmas tree decorated in an assortment of silver and gold ornaments. ABOVE: White poinsettias and garland add a festive touch to the comfortable sitting room.

“Our guests may be with us a single night or over 22 months; but their experience with us is just the beginning of our mission,” says Christie Knott, Family House executive director. In keeping with the “home away from home” theme, there is no shortage of holiday spirit at Family House, particularly its Shadyside location, conveniently situated on Centre Avenue. House manager Kay Bebenek takes great pride in perfecting all aspects of the home, to ensure that it glistens and gleams with festive cheer. “The holidays are always a difficult time for our patients and their families to be away from their own homes. For the past eleven years, we have had a team of dedicated volunteers who make our Family House

in Shadyside look and feel special for our guests,” says Bebenek.

Thriving holiday spirit Homes in the Shadyside neighborhood tend to be decorated quite lavishly for the holidays; thus, it was important to these hardworking volunteers at Shadyside to create a similar atmosphere. The exterior of the seven-story red brick and stone building is perfectly trimmed with fresh pine garland that are adorned with beautiful gold bows and bold red accent pieces. Once inside, the warmth and whimsical holiday atmosphere of the foyer and its sitting area take guests aback. There is an ornamented wreath hung from the fireplace with care, massive white poinsettias

in decorated baskets and even a luminous brass menorah, donated by a volunteer many years ago. A focal point of the foyer is the staircase, its banister wrapped tightly with greens, lights and ribbons. Hanging on the landing is an illuminated shadow box, lined with plaques that read the names of donors that have helped to make this particular house possible. These plaques are more then just acknowledgments; they serve as a reminder for all guests and volunteers of the motto that Family House runs on, “Amazing things happen when your heart is in the right place.” Off of the foyer, through the French double doors is the house’s great room, or the tree room as it is referred to during continued >

the holidays. The dramatic nine-foot tree shines with white lights and an array of silver and gold ornaments of all shapes and sizes. There is a sense of calm in the room as the angel atop of the tree watches over the space and its healing guests. The floor to ceiling windows add to the magnificence of the solarium, as the light reflects off of all the sparkly accessories. Even more beautiful than the decorations themselves are the holiday traditions that take place at all of the houses of Family House. Volunteers dedicate their time and efforts each year to prepare and serve warm meals to the guests on Christmas Day. In addition, hundreds of gifts are donated, wrapped, and placed beneath the tree, to give the guests something to look forward to when spending the holidays away from home.

Importance of family What once was a small yet compassionate enterprise has blossomed into an innovative, much-emulated model of family/ patient support systems, not just during the holiday season but also all year round. The quality of life that guests enjoy at Family House is more than a kindness; it is a considerable element in the treatment process itself. Most importantly, the complete story of Family House is that of the human story, stories of compassion, strength, and generosity in a time of need. “The house manager is an angel sent from God. She is knowledgeable, compassionate, and a shoulder to cry on if needed,” says a guest of Family House. “The facilities are beautiful and well organized. The location is wonderful and only walking distance to the hospital where my daughter is hospitalized. Thank you for providing this wonderful place. It is a blessing.”
