No truer words have ever been spoken! Anyone who has purchased a house relies on their instincts, with the belief they will create a perfect home. This issue highlights many of the great kitchens and baths found in and around our city. You’ll meet Charlotte and David Stephenson, who recently updated their Mt. Lebanon Tudor to include a warm and inviting kitchen and dining area. Our Bathroom Trends centers on Rose Anna and Joe Covelli, who hadn’t planned their remodeling project until after a water pipe burst in their Jefferson Hills abode. The dazzling master bath is one of many renovations the Covellis have undertaken over the past year. We’re also showcasing a brand new kitchen in Ligonier which recently won The Pittsburgh Kitchen Design Competition, as well as a stunning kitchen restoration in Sewickley. We’ve also expanded our Fresh Finds section. We are now featuring segments on the latest and most innovative products and technology as it pertains to your furniture, flooring and lighting. Please check out Housetrends. com and our Facebook page for even more design tips and ideas. This issue marks the beginning of our fifth year, an appropriate time to introduce Christina Kleiner, our new editor. Christina is excited to take on the challenge, and is looking forward to keeping you captivated with the best design projects this city has to offer. On behalf of the Housetrends staff and me, please join me in welcoming her to Pittsburgh! Enjoy Housetrends’ Kitchen and Bath issue! We’re looking ahead to our Spring issue (hurray Phil!), where we’ll be presenting several comfortable, chic outdoor living spaces and gardens sprinkled throughout the city.

After
living in Harrisburg
for 11 years and planning a dream house to sit on five acres, Jill and her husband realized, due to work, a move to the Pittsburgh area might be more convenient. Having a hard time finding a lot that would match their plans, the couple rented while their search continued.
Having a good eye and a gut feeling, Jill noticed a house that looked like it was getting cleaned out to be put on the market—which was exactly the case. Looking at the house, Jill had a vision and thought it had a very similar footprint to what she and her husband had designed in their plans. “I thought, here’s an opportunity to make it work,” Jill says. After purchasing the 1954 French/contemporary house, the couple got to work and fast. They kept a lot of the framing of the home, but not much else. “We pretty much gutted the house so we could remodel it to fit exactly what we had in mind,” Jill says. Herb Brown of Brown’s Building and Remodeling guided the remodel with perfection according to Jill and her husband. “If we ever get a single comment over and over, it is that the house looks like an old house due to the architecture and detail,” says Jill. “Herb and his team of carpenters created this beautiful space with their magnificent craftsmanship.”
Less contemporary, more traditional Jill’s taste is very French Country and she especially wanted her home to reflect that style. She contacted Linda Yeager of The Kitchen Studio early in the remodel. “I’m a big visionary person and I know what I like, but Linda was crucial when it came to the layout,” says Jill. Yeager’s plan was simple: make a very large space efficient. “I’m lucky to be able to work with very beautiful kitchens, but before anything, the space has to function and that is my primary concern,” says Yeager. continued >

Yeager worked to create zones that would give the kitchen a natural flow. The large island is an organized work station that includes a pullout microwave, dish drawer for storage and prep sink, which is very close to the range so there is no need to carry food all over the kitchen. The room also features a wet bar and butler’s pantry, making entertaining a breeze for Jill and her husband. Yeager says Jill had an aesthetic idea in mind from the beginning of the remodel. “She knew the kind of look she wanted and we took a long time to perfect the color scheme, because there were a few colors that were close, but not exactly what she wanted,” says Yeager. The cabinets are glazed in a custom blend somewhere in the middle of creamy beige and yellow. When it came to the wood for the island Jill decided on her favorite, walnut, and it turned out to be a great accent with the light cabinetry. Jill and her husband were looking for something decorative and special with the custom hood, which is also walnut. “They definitely didn’t want the traditional hood so we took it a step further with a beautiful piece,” says Yeager.
Designer dining room The dining room was practically designed around a large, round dining table. Jill wanted a big square room to fit the table and the couple also wanted to have access to their wine room. In original plans, the house was going to have a wine cellar, but due to a change in structural plans, the wine room was moved to the main level, right off of the dining room. When you walk into the dining room, one of the first elements to catch your eye is the ceiling detail. Somewhat similar to the detail in the kitchen, these treatments came from the same place, which started with an out-of-the-box idea from Jill. continued >

The detail came from antique folding screens that Jill purchased to incorporate into the stairwell for the wine cellar. When the couple shifted gears on the wine cellar, Jill wanted to think of a way to use them because she loved their detail. “Having this big square dining room with all of this white dry wall ceiling, I knew I wanted to do some kind of treatment, maybe have someone come in and do some hand painting,” Jill says. “As I looked at those panels, I mentioned to the carpenters that I thought we could take the screens apart, cut them down and come up with a pattern. Of course they looked at me like I was crazy and said no, but I asked them to just try. Sure enough it worked and we ended with this beautiful detail.” Jill had the carpenters use some leftover pieces for the ceiling detail in the kitchen. Finally, Jill used what was left in the wine room. “I only have one small piece left and I keep joking with my husband that we have to find something to do with it since we used the rest of it,” she says. The dining room also acts as a combination living room, which Jill says is great for entertaining. “I absolutely love this concept because when we entertain and you want to be more comfortable, you can sit on the sofa and pull chairs around, and with the wine room so close, it makes for an overall great space,” Jill says.

F RENCH European style leads to a bright and cheerful kitchen By Christina Kleiner | Photos by GeorgeThomasMendel.com Cleaning up after a meal might seem like a mundane task, but with views like this even a sink full of dishes can’t ruin the ambiance or your mood. Ligonier, noted for its quaint downtown square and small-town charm, is also known for its rolling hillsides and rural atmosphere. ✦ The picturesque view isn’t the only impressive element in this kitchen. Equally stunning is the elegant décor, created with a great eye for detail, of this culinary masterpiece. The homeowners enlisted the help of Ida McConnell, CKD, of Cuvee Kitchen Designs, to help bring their vision to life. “The home features a heavy French Tudor design and they wanted that theme to carry over into the kitchen,” McConnell says.

A cook’s kitchen In addition to the French design, the homeowners spend a lot of time in the kitchen. “He enjoys cooking and she likes to bake, so having plenty of counter space was a necessity,” McConnell says, pointing out the perimeter countertops and double islands. While some might call it a challenge, McConnell calls the abundance of space set aside for the kitchen an advantage. In fact, she asked the architect to widen the room by two feet. This gave her the space to add the two islands, one of the dominating features in the kitchen. “The homeowners were worried a separate breakfast table would clutter the space, so they wanted to make sure the island could accommodate seating,” McConnell adds. The island, measuring roughly 5x9 feet, boasts seating for five, plus a prep sink and plenty of storage. The prep island is conveniently located nearby and features an Iroko butcher block top and a cherry cabinet base. “The cherry provides a nice contrast to the surrounding cream tones, it really complements the bar stools and brings out the dark hue of the hardware,” McConnell says.
A place for everything The size also allowed McConnell to essentially create individual cooking stations so the couple could be in the kitchen, baking and cooking dinner, but not feel as if they are on top of each other. The 48-inch

Wolf range has its own dedicated space, with countertops flanking both sides and two open shelves below for pot and pan storage. The refrigerator and freezer, with companion pull-out drawers, are strategically hidden behind panels and resemble a piece of furniture, thanks to intricate carvings and crown molding. The large farmhouse sink commands the back of the room, where the couple’s expansive property is in full view. The double ovens, microwave and steam oven reside on the opposite side of the kitchen. “Since there aren’t any wall cabinets, and the space is so large, I didn’t want the kitchen to look unbalanced,” McConnell explains. “By hiding the refrigerator and freezer behind cabinet panels and placing the four cabinets above the ovens on the opposite side, we were able to create balance and symmetry in the kitchen.”

Colorful aesthetics The homeowners selected a charming shade of country blue for the walls, which gives the kitchen a crisp and clean palette. McConnell based the color scheme for the cabinetry off the soft shade of the walls. She suggested a cream tone for the large island and perimeter cabinetry. “These cabinets also feature a chocolate brushed glaze, which complements the cherry prep island and beverage center,” she says. The beverage center was an important element for the homeowners, who entertain often. The piece, which also resembles furniture, is the perfect spot for serving coffee, tea or hors d’oeuvres as they entertain guests in the nearby family room. The earth tones of the Persa Gold granite countertops and limestone flooring and backsplash complete the design. “There are so many great features in this kitchen,” McConnell says, “and the dramatic views just seal the deal. It’s a very happy kitchen—how could you not smile when you walk in here?” Editor’s Note: This kitchen recently won the Pittsburgh Kitchen Design Competition, sponsored by Don’s Appliances, Hillmon Appliance Distributors, Miele and Housetrends magazine.

A devastating accident leads to a happy ending By Joan Pearlstein Dunn | Photos by Craig Thompson On February 8, 2010, Pittsburgh was crushed by a continuous winter storm that would leave behind a mountain of snow on an unsuspecting city. Before it was finished, it would suspend travel, close businesses, and knock the power out to thousands of homes. ✦ Rose Anna and Joe Covelli left that morning, to board a plane headed to California for what they thought would be a getaway from wintry weather. “It was snowing like crazy here in Pittsburgh, and by the time we landed we heard there were 20 inches of snow and that power was out everywhere,” Rose Anna tells. “We didn’t think anything of it, but started to get concerned by Monday night because we hadn’t turned our water off.”

A gut feeling As a precaution, they sent someone over to check on their Jefferson Hills home. A short time later, the couple received a phone call, telling them that it was too late and not to come home right away. Their friend had walked into a disaster in progress which had left their beautiful home in ruins. Ceilings were collapsed on floors below, and water was gushing all around him. A disaster restoration company was brought in to do the clean up. “They just went at it, and started tearing out the ceilings and walls,” tells Rose Anna. “Everything was soaking wet, and they had blowers going everywhere.” Within three days it was all cleared out, including the master bedroom ceiling which had collapsed onto the bed. During most of the renovation, the couple had to live elsewhere for 6 months, and only toward the end were able to live in a small area on the opposite end of the house which hadn’t been damaged. In essence, they would need to start over, and had to rethink their whole living arrangement. “We wanted a master bathroom with a spa theme,” says Rose Anna. “We also wanted it to be serene, and peaceful.” On the recommendation of their contractor, the couple brought in Kathy Cvetkovich, of Willowbrook Design, to design the space. She had to take into consideration the amount of damage, and couple it with the space that they had, (the new bathroom was originally the closet) in her redesign. In the end, they ended up reframing and customizing everything to create a knockout master suite. “The architecture of the space really screamed to be the bathroom, because it had a peaked roof and a nice big window,” the designer points out. “The window was the focal point, and the most logical place to position the tub.” continued > OVERLEAF LEFT: Thassos and Ming green marble line the tub walls and bathroom floor. Meant to be To achieve the soft and tranquil setting that the couple wanted, she used a color scheme of sea foam blue/green, taupe and clear white. “Working with Kathy was fantastic because she listens to what you want, and then she designs it,” points out Rose Anna. “It was always fun, we never stopped laughing, and we became very good friends through the ordeal.” Cvetkovich blended a contrast of both contemporary and traditional design in her blueprint of the spa-like bathroom. The tub is framed in glass mosaic tile and features a softly curved front deck. Sitting under a high cathedral ceiling, and in front of a large scenic window, the tub is the focal point of the
room. A jumbo sized shower is enclosed with cast glass walls, and spawns an outdoorsy feeling. The floor of the shower was crowned in the middle, and trough drains were added front and back, to keep water running in both directions. A Grohe Amera Shower System offers the couple a control panel, and an assortment of body sprays and shower heads. Cherry wood vanities, with pillow edge doors were wall hung, and support two inlaid mother of pearl sinks. Rose Anna is delighted to have her own vanity. “I can actually sit down and put on my makeup, rather than standing,” she points out. “I never had that, so it was important to me that we both have our own sides.” continued >

bathroomtrends Joe added features for year round comfort. “The bathroom has its own air-conditioning unit so that the space would be comfortable when one of us is showering and the other is getting ready,” he explains. “Same with the winter, we have radiant heated floors because marble can be cold on the feet.” Cvetkovich describes the commode area as “sexy,” because of the iridescent glass listellos that glow under the halogen lights. The couple doesn’t look back at what happened. At first they were devastated, but in retrospect the overall experience has turned out to be a positive one. “Over the past year there have been times where we cried, we laughed, or we were completely frustrated,” shares Rose Anna. “But, it happened, we dealt with it, and we knew eventually it would be okay and there would be an end.”

By Karen Bradner It is thought that the first individual size bathtub— a 5-foot-long piece of pottery—was enjoyed on the Greek island of Crete somewhere around 3300 BC. It is said that a few thousand years later—in 500 BC—citizens of Rome were encouraged to bathe daily, but typically the cleansing occurred in a public bath. Those few who were wealthy enough to afford a private bath enjoyed bathing themselves in a sort of luxurious private pool. F Flash forward a few thousand years. Thankfully today, private bathing is commonplace, but the selection of vessels in which to bathe is anything but. Keep it simple and join the millions who purchase the most common style of tub sold today—a 5-foot wall-to-wall built-in model in white or biscuit. Or treat yourself like a Roman emperor and enjoy one of these lavish soaks. continued >

According to Robert Mondavi, “Wine is passion. Wine is family and friends, warmth of heart and generosity of spirit. Wine is art. It is culture. It is the essence of civilization and the art of living.” Joe DeGruttola, proprietor of The Wine Loft Pittsburgh in the Southside Works, agrees. Raised in a large Italian family where good food and fine wine were second nature, opening The Wine Loft allowed him a sense of the perfect marriage: a subtle blend of his passion for food and wine, coupled with a well thought out plan for the future. Inspired from quite literally the ground floor up, each ingredient of this elegant space complements its others. The small thoughtfully appointed kitchen lends itself to the simplicity of its menu which in turn, lends itself to the tantalizing tastes of the nearly 300 wine offerings by the glass and bottle.
“The Wine Loft's purpose is to heighten our thirsty anticipation of bottles yet uncorked.”
Like gravity, detail can be so basic that it’s often overlooked. Enter designer Bonita Farinelli, diva of all things “wow.” “We wanted to achieve something with a cosmopolitan feel, while still being very elegant,” explains Farinelli, “I don’t think there’s anything in Pittsburgh like it.” No detail large or small was by accident. Farinelli and DeGruttola looked far and wide to create an original. For instance, one could easily miss that the Armstrong tiles above the bar are stainless reflective. The barstools are constructed with relaxed functionality in mind. Even the rungs along the bottom of these stools include stainless plates that reflect the flicker of all the iron works surrounding the articulately designed bar. Likewise, the free form bamboo panels that line the bar. The lighting shines through each bamboo ring defining the geometric shapes and forms throughout the interior. The bamboo rings are baked into the panels, with just enough of a semi-opaque finish that you can still see the light behind it, and the delicate circles inside. On the bar's surface, the lamps are an excellent touch. “The challenge,” says Bonita, “was to choose the right size. The openness at the bottom, an iron spiral, doesn’t create a deterrent to the workers behind the bar, or take away the guest’s view of the wine cellar.” At The Wine Loft, it’s all about the guest experience. “The Wine Loft — A perfect setting designed to enhance the enjoyment of wine.”
Exceptional creature comforts are universal here. Sofas, chairs, colors, styles, and durability are all vital considerations. The carpet follows the pattern of the custom granite bar. The effect is soft and calming and according to Farinelli “the visual is reflective and translucent.” With Bonita’s expert direction, a first impression is that you have left Pittsburgh entirely, yet upon further scrutiny, you find that it is not so. Pittsburgh steel workers played a part in the creation of this unparalleled space, their seemingly delicate handiwork omnipresent throughout the metal railings and nuances that make each level blend into the next. An artfully crafted metallic wall adjacent to the bar features a
glaze creating the illusion of a sunset. The atmosphere provides one a place to enhance the sensory aspect of wine tasting. On opening night, Bonita witnessed her “Grand Farinelli.” Elated to see it all come together, it truly was the long awaited “WOW.” After all, according to owner, Joe DeGruttola, “Wine gives people the warm fuzzies…that’s why I love this business.” His goal is simple: He wants to send you home happy, hopefully having enjoyed something you have never tried before. Kitchen makeover creates fun, functional space for Mt. Lebanon couple By Danielle Krouse Photos by GeorgeThomasMendel.com

OVERLEAF: Because Charlotte and David both use the kitchen equally, she wanted to make sure the space was not overly feminine, but rather a reflection of both their tastes. OPPOSITE: The backsplash is made of tumbled stone and American Olean Glass mosaics. BELOW: A small wet bar area was another vision from Master Remodelers that adds to the functionality of the new kitchen.
A chance encounter The first kitchen designer they brought on board was not a good match and they didn’t feel as if they would have the dramatic change they were looking for. At the same time, they were dealing with some foundation issues occurring with freezing and thawing around the back corner of the house where the kitchen meets. They had scheduled a contractor to come look at the problem, but they never showed up. It was during a weekend trip to Conneaut Lake where Charlotte was reading through an issue of Housetrends that she noticed a homeowner’s name she was familiar with who had had a renovation done by
Regis McQuaide of Master Remodelers. “Having lived in Mt. Lebanon for 25 years I recognized Regis’s name, but I never had the opportunity to work with him,” says Charlotte. “I decided to call Master Remodelers and after I told Regis the situation he came right over.”
A plan of attack After tackling the foundation issue for Charlotte and David, the couple decided Master Remodelers was the right company for the kitchen remodel they had been planning for so long. Junko Higashibeppu, kitchen designer with Master Remodelers,
was able to give Charlotte a clear vision of what the kitchen could be through 3-D plans on her computer. “When she opened the laptop it really knocked our socks off and we felt like this was it, the motivation we needed to take this on,” says Charlotte. The couple was looking to open up their kitchen and wanted an updated space where they could cook and entertain. The kitchen was outdated with 1980s style cabinetry and a California color scheme. The space needed warming up, which was done through honed Sahara Gold limestone flooring, Sucuri granite countertops, and earth tone paint colors. continued >

kitchen trends The eat-in area of the kitchen is frequently used by family and includes a stone fireplace and wood support beams.
The eat-in area now includes support beams in the ceiling that were added to help the foundation of the house, and are a perfect match to the Tudor style of the home. A stone fireplace was also added and can be enjoyed from the eat-in space as well as the room beyond, both of which were also redone. When it came to decision-making, options were narrowed down and brought to the couple for a less overwhelming experience. “I’ve never really been much of a shopper and we were able to go in, look at a few options that were all in keeping with my taste and I could make a decision rather quickly,” says Charlotte.
Design success According to McQuaide, the easiest way to start a kitchen remodel is to have the homeowners select the largest details first, such as the appliances. After Charlotte and David made those decisions, the team could focus on smaller details like finishes. Overall, Charlotte was looking for better traffic flow, and a space that could help entertain groups and family functions. “It’s such a livable space now that we’re using it more than we ever used our old kitchen, and I really think that is the mark of a successful project,” says Charlotte.

Tips for selecting the right statue for any landscape By Sarah J. Dills

Taking time
to stop and
smell the roses can soothe away stress from the most hectic day. Whether it be a stroll through a public park or an hour tending to a backyard flower bed, the benefits of gardens and landscapes are obvious. The flowers seem to possess the hidden power to carry us away to a whimsical, magical place where life is easier. ✦ Tucking a piece of garden
statuary into the blooms of a flower or the shade of a tree is like hiding an Easter egg for a child to find with amazement. Garden statues are angelic touches of personality that pop against the rainbow of colors naturally found in any of Mother Nature’s cozy beds. Happy hunting While it might seem easy to visit the local garden center and select any statue for your space, experts advise developing a plan before your purchase. Here are some quick tips to remember. Peter C. Cilio, creative director of fine garden accessories for Campania International, says the most important consideration is the overall style of your home and garden. “Whether you have an urban, contemporary or country garden, the statuary you select should be compatible with the style and feeling of your house and garden.” Another important component of the selection process is sizing. Tres Fromme, planning and design specialist with Mesa Design Group in Dallas, suggests cutting a piece of statuary out of cardboard and placing it in different locations throughout your garden. “This will help you get a feel for where the piece looks its best. It will also give you some time to think about why you want to add an ornament to your garden setting.” Less is more according to Fromme. “One well-suited piece will create a presence and a focal point, introducing harmony rather than chaos into the garden.” If you are unsure on your personal garden statue style, take a look at some of the most popular categories of garden statues available. continued >

The
Angel
Angels are seen as guardians that watch over us from above. They have a protective nature and watch over the plants and flowers in the garden. While these statues come in a variety of styles, they are well suited for a traditional or shabby chic home.
The
God
Mythological creatures and Greek gods are known for their magical powers and strength. While each has their own special skill, Pan (above) is the god of shepherds and flocks, of mountains wild, hunting and rustic music. He is also seen as the god of fields, groves and wooded glens. This rendering of Pan would blend nicely into a contemporary or urban setting.
The
Garden gnome
Probably one of the most misunderstood of the garden statues, the garden gnome (left) has been portrayed in a variety of ways—from tacky to scary. However, garden gnomes are seen as small creatures who dwell close to the Earth and care for the wildlife. Done tastefully, a garden gnome is the perfect choice for an eclectic garden. The
Child
landscape TRENDS
Children bring innocence to any landscape. Having a boy or girl statue represents the birth of new plants and the growth of the garden. The style of child statues varies depending on the finish and detail on the statue. The boy seen here (left), paired with the two bird statues, would be a nice element in a traditional landscape.
The
Animal
Animal statues come in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes—from classic to contemporary. The cat is one of the more popular animals of choice for statuary, because of its rich history. Cat statues can pay homage to their Egyptian roots, or they can be more domesticated (inset). This cat statue would feel comfortable in a country or colonial garden.
