We intend to create
memories here that will last a lifetime. —Tim Gregson

’’
Tim’s intentions for creating the captivating outdoor living space behind his Largo home go well beyond having a little fun in the sun. When he started the process his motive was to build a respite for his family. Now, his daughters have an amazing pool where they can enjoy childhood and Tim and his wife, Beth, get to take part in all the action. All the homeowners featured share the same sentiments as Tim. Jack and Doreen Bray felt the urge to establish a welcoming locale for their family. Their love for their 25-year-old home in north Tampa led them to embark on a dramatic renovation that you’ll have to see to believe. This issue also includes a large kitchen makeover and a brand new home located in family-friendly Innisbrook. We hope this quartet of homeowners has you thinking about your next home remodeling project. For even more inspiration, including extra photos of the homes featured on these pages, be sure to check out our webPhoto by Johan Roetz site, Housetrends.com.

ChangiNg with the TiMeS Renovated residence feels brand new By Lyla Haggard | Photos by Johan Roetz
Doreen Bray can’t help but smile when she walks through the front door of her home north of Tampa. “Everything used to be dark—oak-paneled walls and rich, heavy colors—all things we liked when we built this home 25 years ago,” she says. F But times and tastes have changed over the years. “Now I’m greeted with a light, airy, spacious feel to the foyer and downstairs, and I love it! It’s like getting a brand-new house,” she laughs. continued >

before One thing leads to another Family has always been important to Doreen and her husband, Jack. When they built their home in the exclusive Avila gated community, they were raising two young children. Today their family has expanded to include five grandchildren who visit often and are now old enough to require bedrooms of their own. So converting an unfinished attic space into an additional bedroom prompted the Brays to initiate a renovation—one that grew into a re-designed kitchen, larger sunroom, walk-in closets, bigger baths, all new exterior windows and doors, a rescreened and resurfaced pool and outdoor grill area and a completely rebuilt entry foyer and curved staircase. The AC/heating system was upgraded into five zones and the home’s sound system is now hidden inside the walls. As anyone who has attempted it knows, a renovation can often be more complicated, difficult and time-consuming than building from scratch. Just ask Jerry Glaser, owner of Tampa-based Glaser Homes, who took on the renovation for the Brays. “The first thing Doreen asked me was, ‘Can you lower the foyer floor?’” Glaser recalls, “And the second was, ‘Can you get it all done by Thanksgiving?’ I said yes and we did it, but it took a lot of coordination and good communication to meet that nine-month deadline.”
Redefining the entry When the Brays built their home in the 1980s, they chose a raised foyer floor, which required step-downs into the living room, dining room and library, as was the style at the time. Now Doreen’s number one request was to get rid of the raised flooring, no small task since the upstairs walkway spilled into a curved staircase which would have to be totally reconstructed to accommodate the new lowered foyer floor. The newly designed staircase was widened and each riser increased by ½-inch in height. Several elements had to be replaced or re-designed to achieve the lighter, open feel that Doreen wanted. After removing the foyer floor and its cement subfloor, new hand-hewn distressed hardwood flooring with a pegged herringbone pat-

building trends tern was installed throughout the public rooms. Coffered ceilings were removed and all doorways heightened for a more spacious feel. Panels were sprayed light beige with an amber glaze to resemble a furniture finish. Two new gorgeous backto-back hand-carved custom marble fireplace mantels made in Italy and installed by Barbara Tattersfield add elegance and sophistication. “Doreen’s passion is antiques,” says interior designer and longtime friend Francine Newton of Newton Interiors, “but she wants them comfortable and inviting. Function comes first.” Finally, the entry door and the overhead balustrade and stairway handrails, which were formerly wooden dowels, were replaced with wrought iron in a graceful spiral pattern that repeats the curve of the staircase. “We had just finished building a second home in California, and I really liked the wrought iron look,” says Jack, “but I wanted something out of the ordinary, something subtle that would endure the test of time and was not too trendy.”
High-efficiency kitchen The kitchen is the epitome of spaciousness and efficiency. Two islands—one topped with gray and gold-veined white honed statuary and the other with light oak—allow for workspace and a separate conversation area. The light walls and cream-colored cabinetry, high ceilings with wrought iron light pendants and expanded eating nook and sunroom create an atmosphere of openness. Bringing the outside inside, a view of the pool area, newly resurfaced with Travertine marble tiles, and the Avila golf course beyond gives a relaxing feel to the area. The butler’s pantry, taken from garage space, features lighted displays for china and crystal stemware and has drawers lined with pacific cloth to keep silver from tarnishing. The laundry room nearby features a deep porcelain farm sink and an efficient moveable work island on rollers. continued >

Sanctuary for guests With the family growing, another bedroom became a necessity. Fortunately, an unfinished attic space was available to create a unique guest suite with a fun ambiance. Glaser fashioned an attic feel with slanted walls, dormer windows and window seats but kept the ceiling high enough that there is no closed-in feeling. Introducing lots of light into the sleeping area, an entire wall was replaced with French doors that open onto a deck overlooking the pool and backyard area. Tim and Beth Gregson’s three daughters are ready for summer. In fact, they’ve tested the backyard pool and spa a few times since February. “They jump into the pool and then quickly make their way to the warm waters of the spa,” Tim says with a laugh. “However, we’ve all enjoyed a few nights sitting in the spa as a family, so I’d say we’re all ready for summer.”
The perfect location As soon as the mercury rises, the Gregson family will likely spend the majority of their downtime in the great outdoors behind their Largo home. Situated along the Intracoastal
Waterway, and offering views of the Gulf of Mexico, Tim says he couldn’t pass up the chance to build the home on the lot. “We lived in a beach house, which we loved,” he explains. “But this is a piece of family property, with Beth’s mother living next door. To live along the water, here in Pinellas County, is such a rare opportunity.” Tim based the construction of the house, as well as the pool and outdoor living space, on the views. The back of the Spanish Mediterranean-inspired home offers covered porches and patios, as well as a complete outdoor kitchen and living room boasting a fireplace and television. “We can grill out in the afternoon and sit by the fireplace in the evening, rain or shine,” Tim says. continued >

The Gregsons turned to Patrick O’Connell, owner of Landmark Pools, to help them construct the luxurious pool and spa. O’Connell credits landscape architect Billy Barber with creating the overall design. “This was his first project when he came to work for me,” O’Connell says. “What he came up with was out of this world.” Since the property slopes down toward the water, O’Connell and Barber had two choices—build a retaining wall to establish a level yard or create a pool that conforms to the lot. Barber went for the latter choice by drawing up a plan that included two pools with an attached spa and rock mountain. “Since the pools are staggered and the mountain is down below, our views aren’t obstructed,” Tim says.
Two for one The upper pool is 4 feet deep and includes a beach entry and Badu swim jets, perfect for doing laps or other water exercises. An infinity edge spills over to the lower pool, which is 7½ feet deep and serves as the access point for the curved slide built into the rock mountain. “This is one of the girls’ favorite features,” adds Tim. O’Connell used real rocks and boulders to create the mountain, which also features a cave and waterfall. “That cave is the real deal,” O’Connell says. “Some of the boulders we used weigh over 2,000 pounds.” To complement the boulders, the spa and portions of the mountain are covered in Tennessee Field Stone, which offsets the two structures from the surrounding travertine patio. A special finish, called Pebble Sheen, gives the pools rich blue hues. The lower pool has a darker blue finish compared to the upper pool in order to add dimension to the overall look. Other touches, such as fire bowls and
LED lighting, help transform the back yard into a tropical getaway both day and night.
Creating memories The Gregsons are ready for backyard barbeques and pool parties with friends and family. But, more importantly, Tim and Beth are looking forward to those quiet family moments, where they can just enjoy time together. “Our oldest is 12, so we know that times will change,” Tim says. “We wanted to create a safe environment for the girls to enjoy as long as they can. We intend to create memories here that will last a lifetime.”
OPPOSITE: The upper pool includes a beach entry, an umbrella and swim jets for exercise. TOP: The spa is surrounded by natural Tennessee Field Stone. RIGHT: Grilling is easy, thanks to the outdoor kitchen, which is complete with a KitchenAid grill and range hood.

Contemporary Today’s contemporary window treatments are “simply” beautiful!
By Kelly Z. Clark
like
many fashion and home decor trends, our window treatments have run the gamut from complicated
creations to simple statements. In the past we’ve seen elaborate curtain designs that incorporated yards and yards of fabric lavished with embellishments, and presented on stately curtain rods with carved finials. These window treatments were almost as opulent as a ball gown. Just ask Scarlett. Scarlett O’Hara was a complicated Southern belle who lived a charmed life, so it’s no wonder she wore her grand window treatments when she fell on hard times. And many can remember the classic Carol Burnett Show spoof of Gone with the Wind, where Carol also dons her window treatments, but includes the huge curtain rod as well. decoratingtrends The simplicity of today’s contemporary trends in window treatments wouldn’t do for Scarlett, but for many of us the look is a welcomed change. According to Millie Hammond, senior stylist for Fabricut Inc., a worldwide distributor of decorative fabrics, people have embraced the cleaner aesthetic of contemporary design as their lives have gotten busier. Companies like Fabricut are working hard to provide designers with contemporary fabrics and accessories their clients will feel at home with. For those who prefer the non-custom option, retailers are also offering contemporary ready-made window treatments.

It’s too loud, can you tone it down, please Color is what has changed most significantly in fabric designs for contemporary settings. By just reducing the number of colors in a fabric, manufacturers have captured designs that are more fitting to the quiet, serene look that is so popular today. Fabric with a large-scale design can appear somewhat understated and fitting to the scheme when the number of colors is limited and the tones are muted. Even intricate patterns such as Fabricut’s “Sister Sister” and “MacGyver” have a contemporary vibe when they are presented using simple, muted color combinations.

For those who prefer to limit their use of patterns, you can never go wrong with a solid curtain panel. Trendy colors range from white/cream to organic shades such as mushroom, jute, gravel and ash. What makes solid curtain panels so visually desirable is the use of fabrics with a texture. Linen weaves are hugely popular and can be nubby or smooth, weighty or very sheer. Emphasize the texture of the fabric by choosing a color that is similar to the wall color—either a shade lighter
or darker and see how the texture of the fabric becomes even more noticeable and interesting. This works very well with velvet fabrics also. Less is more in the actual design too, of course, so rather than pinch pleats or overlaying swags, the top of contemporary treatments feature straightforward folds attached to slick, unobtrusive drapery hardware (curtain rod, rings and finials). If it sounds too simple to be stylish, it’s not. The contemporary person will appre-
ciate the restrained, classy presentation and how it becomes a beautiful element within the room.
Pull the shades Not a fan of curtains, but still want a window treatment? Shades and blinds lend themselves beautifully to contemporary rooms because they are streamlined and can fit within the window. Fashion aside, blinds and shades are also functional treatments that provide light concontinued >

decoratingtrends trol and privacy. Hunter Douglas’ design trend expert, Sally Morse, recommends the Silhouette and Pirouette shade systems to finish a contemporary window. To play up the contemporary look, Morse says, “If it has a slat, vein or louver, always select the wider slat for the cleanest look because you will have half as many slats and a better view to the outdoors.” Morse also suggests that you can use the optical illusion created by the horizontal lines of shades and blinds because they tend to elongate the look of a window when your eye follows the horizontal line. “No one ever asks for their windows to appear smaller,” Morse says. Morse also suggests the Skyline Gliding Window Panels which are super sleek and can be used to dress even the largest window expanse. These sliding panels are installed on a two-channel track that can split and open in the center or at the left or right side of the window. Hunter Douglas offers a large selection of sheer and opaque fabrics for the system in natural and woven grass options. Believe it or not, roller shades have made an impressive comeback. If the last time you saw a roller shade it was white, plastic and in your grandma’s house, then you will want to see the latest in this window covering. Today’s roller shades come in a plethora of custom fabrics that include organic, woven looks and textured finishes that result in an uncomplicated but “wow” appearance for windows. So maybe Scarlett did get her curtain “swag” on, but today’s contemporary window treatments are so classy and stylish, they’re enough to rival Scarlett in all her ball gown glory.

At
Thanksgiving last year, Kevin and Michelle Steele hosted 150
guests in their Dade City kitchen, cooking three turkeys and two hams in the revamped 2,800-square-foot space. | “There was room for everybody that day. Everyone had their own stations and no one was stepping on each other’s toes, which was wonderful,” says Michelle, who shares her home with husband, Kevin, and their three young children. “We had every burner going while we were preparing the food. On the griddle, we had bacon frying. Everyone just loved it.”

Revamping the space That wasn’t always the case in the Steele kitchen. When the family moved into the 6,200-square-foot house in 2005, the cooking area was dark and cramped, and a 25-foot wall blocked the view of the den. For Michelle, who is an avid chef, the closed-in layout interfered with her baking and cooking pursuits. “I always knew I wanted a country, French-inspired kitchen with a lot of space and convenient features. I wanted a kitchen that would be warm and inviting but also beautiful,” she says. “It needed to
be family-friendly because we have three children (ages 4, 9 and 12). I’m a stay-athome mom and Kevin owns a software company, so we rarely go out to eat. I need a lot of room to cook.” Michelle spent six years envisioning a full overhaul, but it wasn’t until last spring that she hired designer Jeff McNabb from Tampa’s Kitchen Creations. McNabb specializes in creating luxury-grade cabinetry, and his company handles everything from drafting the plans to selling the materials to installing the individual pieces.

“The remodel was definitely a collaborative effort. This is a very large room and it lends itself to seemingly endless designs,” McNabb says, who began demolition in May and completed the project in September. “Kevin and Michelle were very involved and, with our guidance, we were able to develop a design that is both beautiful and functional.” While McNabb and his team rolled out the blueprints, the Steeles regularly headed to their other residences in North Carolina and the Florida Keys. When they were in Dade City, Michelle would cook on the lanai grill while the kids swam in the pool. “We always eat at home, so to be without a kitchen for a while was a challenge,” Michelle says. “But it was worth it. I’m glad we took our time to make sure it turned out perfectly.”
Old-world ambiance From the wood-beamed ceilings to the heavy stone backsplashes and ornate corbels, the kitchen is now an example of solid regality. With Typhoon Bordeaux granite countertops by Stone Specialties, maple wood along the kitchen’s perimeter, white cabinets with an

height,” she adds. “Over our hood we have two pullout spice racks. Each side of the cooktop has huge spice drawers. It’s very user-friendly. I even have drawers on the outer island that can fit all kinds of pots and pans.” The pantry and oven cabinets are 102 inches tall, and there is a massive 84x60inch mantel hood and several 42-inchwide drawer banks. These accommodating details come in handy during the holidays when the Steeles assume their roles as entertainers. “At Thanksgiving, for example, some people would be mixing mashed potatoes while people at the other end were using crock pots,” Michelle says. “The ovens and refrigerators are at different ends of the room, so we never run into anyone. The kids can be sitting on the barstools, making cookies, while the adults cook. It’s really everything I’ve ever wanted or needed. It’s a joy to be in here every day.”

espresso glaze and rustic cherry on the center island, the room has an old-world ambiance without feeling cold. “I knew I wanted certain features like crown molding, and I wanted a huge hood with a gas range and a Viking cooktop,” Michelle says. “But it was very important to me not to have that quality like we couldn’t enjoy ourselves in the kitchen. It had to be practical so I could bake my cakes and cookies and make my chicken marsala, lobster and lasagnas in there.” Practical it is. The sleek counters—with their marbled brown, gray, black and offwhite swirls—are easy to clean. There
are two giant islands, tumbled marble accents and thick, patterned stone backsplashes. Eight barstools allow visitors to converse with the cook while waiting for hors d’oeuvres. In the heavily distressed center island is a prep sink, a base recycling center, a swing-up mixer shelf and decorative turned legs (these legs coordinate with the acanthus and pilaster moldings by the sink and valance). The mixer is one of Michelle’s beloved amenities. “The mixer plugs into the cabinet base, so you open the cabinet door and there’s a drawer that pulls back up to the counter

eing organized is a new way of life…
For over 25 years, Southern Closet Systems has been designing, building and installing closet systems for a wide variety of clients, ranging from wellknown celebrities and athletes to your next-door neighbor. Whether a new construction home or an older residence in need of renovation, we have the right combination of functional shelving, hanging spaces and drawers to work organizational miracles that will make your life easier. For older homes Many older homes in historic districts such as South Tampa or Northeast St. Petersburg have elegant, spacious public rooms but minimal closet space in their private areas. For homes like these, or others built a few decades ago, closet space must be carefully re-
designed for maximum effectiveness. Every closet can be improved by leaps and bounds with a professional designer involved. For an average size space, function becomes the dominant factor. Each and every element—whether upper shelving for boxes or lower racks for shoes, whether hanging space for garments of varying lengths or dividers for folded sweaters—must fit perfectly into an optimal arrangement. To get the most out of every square inch, you need an experienced professional. Dressing room as sanctuary In newer, larger homes the design possibilities expand. With a bigger wardrobe space available, the concept changes from closet to dressing room, from bedroom to master suite. By placing all clothes in one room and incor-

porating space for mirrors, seating, folding and organizing, every component of an ensemble is now visible and easily accessible for dressing. Not only can you have all your hanging clothes, such as jackets, pants, shirts and blouses, skirts and dresses, at your fingertips, but the introduction of an island with drawers below and a stone countertop for folding and packing would greatly increase the efficiency of the space. Of course, this dressing space should have built-in clothes hampers, fulllength mirrors and special storage for jewelry, belts, ties and

scarves. And don’t forget shoes—uniquely designed spaces for multiple pairs of footwear, ranging from athletic shoes to dancing pumps. To give a special touch, we often add dramatic lighting such as a chandelier above the island and comfy seating as an accent. For many clients, the dressing room becomes a special place, almost a sanctuary. Says Wayne Smith, founder of Southern Closet Systems, “Many of my clients have told me that their dressing room is their favorite room in the house.”

was a tough decision for the Boesch family to leave their waterfront home in Ozona but the lure of building a new home in Palm Harbor’s
upscale Innisbrook community proved too much. “This is my husband’s dream. We love this community,” Sheri says. “It is so safe here. The kids can run around and ride their bikes all over. Unique spaces for all With four active children, Michael and Sheri knew they wanted a safe, clean neighborhood and they knew the style of home they were looking for. “We both love the Tuscan, Mediterranean look. I always knew that when we were ready to build that I wanted Mike Campagna to do it—he’s a magician,” Sheri says affectionately. “He builds a phenomenal home!” After looking around for several years, they made the move. “We took the Campagna model home in Trinity, flipped it and put it on steroids,” Sheri says laughing. Those “steroids” included a portecochere leading to a separate building, affectionately called “Hunee’s House” that includes a two-car garage and half-bath downstairs and a full guy’s room complete with game tables, TVs and a full bar. Michael is a die-hard Buccaneers fan, as evidenced by the extensive collection of signed sports memorabilia decorating the walls. “Smoke cigars, play poker…I don’t care what you do as long as you do it out there,” Sheri jokes. This 7,200-square-foot home provides plenty of room for this busy family to spread out comfortably. The grand foyer, with its soaring 30-foot ceiling, sets the tone. A private office and formal dining room flank either side of the double front doors and a small wine cellar is tucked beneath the curving staircase, which arcs up to the second floor. Directly ahead, the small formal living room space houses a grand piano and features tall windows overlooking the handsome pool, outdoor patios and golf course beyond. Cascades of rich silk draperies highlight the view. continued >

ABOVE: Bright pink walls, white cabinetry and rhinestone hardware create a quiet respite in the wife’s large closet. OPPOSITE: Built-in desks provide the perfect locale for study time. ABOVE RIGHT: The master bedroom features an elegant tray ceiling and oversized carved furniture.
The spacious master bedroom and bathroom suite take up the right wing of the home. Decorated in dark wood furniture and upholstered in deep tans and browns, this restful space is a favorite snoozing spot for Mongo, the family’s English bulldog. Big doors open into the elegant master bath which features dark wood cabinetry with elegant countertops of brown and ivory marble. A sunny tiled walk-through shower with arched glass windows resides behind the large spa tub. The sparkly bling on the cabinet pulls hints at one of Sheri’s favorite spaces—her closet. “This is my time-out room. When Mommy hides, they always know where to find me,” she laughs. Bright pink walls, creamy white cabinetry with rhinestone encrusted pulls, white carpeted floor and two soft, feminine, upholstered chairs make this the perfect place to escape for a glass of wine and some “girl time.” Upstairs is the kids’ realm. Directly at the top of the stairs is a large playroom complete with dollhouses, games and beanbag chairs for playing video games. Down the hall are three children’s bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Bright blue walls and dark wood cabinets differentiate the son’s room from his sisters’ more feminine abodes decorated in pastel colors. A wide hallway between the rooms provides built-in computer workspaces and storage cabinets for study time.

Rich old-world theme To the left of the entrance foyer stretches the public areas of the home including the kitchen, family room, home movie theater, guest bedroom and laundry area. Earth tones dominate as the old-world theme is continued in most of these areas. The heavy wood beamed ceiling, which highlights the kitchen and family room, ties in well with the massive Marge Carson furniture decorating the room —a natural choice when husband Mike stands 6'6" tall. Sheri had a very strong idea of what she wanted for furnishings so she chose the furnishings and fixtures herself and did most of the decorating in the home. Karen Campagna, whose design company Karen Campagna Interiors does the design work for Campagna Homes, worked with daughter Laura to choose the paint colors and design of the elegant draperies throughout the home.

ABOVE: A freeform pool, complete with a waterfall and beach entry, is the highlight of the back yard.
In the kitchen, a large center island features ivory washed cabinetry while the perimeter cabinets are stained with darker walnut tones. The large Wolf range is topped by a massive cast stone hood, which again accentuates that old-world feel. Gold and ivory toned granite countertops and wrought iron lighting fixtures tie all the elements together. For family movie nights and party time, the adjacent theater room seats eight in plush leather furniture and a full bar in the corner means no running to the kitchen for drinks. This room also opens to the pool bath and workout room at the far end of this wing of the home.
provide plenty of seating and the full outdoor kitchen with an adjacent fire pit makes outdoor entertaining a breeze. The freeform pool includes fiber optic lighting, a sunning platform and a built-in water level table. The focal point though is the man-made cave housing the Jacuzzi with a dive platform and slide coming off the top of the structure. It is clear that this is a well loved home. In fact, wall art in the family room stating “Live, Love, Laugh” accurately sums up this family’s view of life.
