This Tampa couple searched a long time for just the right house before circling back to this lovely lakefront home in Odessa just as it came on the market. In one of those odd coincidences in life, they had previously stopped to admire this home while looking at another house in the complex and by chance, the home came up for sale some months later. It was love at first sight from the moment they walked in the door. “We took one look at the house and that was it!� the husband exclaims. continued >

Space for family Right off the bat, this house met a lot of the couple’s unique requirements, the most specific being that they needed an in-law apartment for the wife’s mother. Sure enough, this home had a full inlaw suite upstairs including a small living room with a mini kitchen and a balcony overlooking the pool as well as two separate bedrooms and third room that this family uses as a home workout facility. This 7,400-square-foot home, with its sage green exterior walls and stone accents, stands out among the tan Mediterraneandesigned homes in the neighborhood.

The previous owners had incorporated a French country look and had put a lot of care and attention into the design of the home and features. For new owners, the house was practically move-in ready besides getting the floors refinished. It just needed their personal belongings to make it a home. Despite having only lived in this house for a year, it has the appearance of a lifetime of memories. For this couple, who actually got married in the house after they moved in, this home has been about combining their lives and starting fresh together in

this new space. Helping them to create the look they wanted was Sherri Johns, the longtime Sales Manager and Design Consultant for Annabelle’s, a 32-year-old fine home furnishings store located in Odessa. “Some of the furniture came from the husband’s old house but pretty much, with a few exceptions, the new pieces came from Annabelle’s,” Johns says. “They made their decisions together and they ordered many pieces in advance so as soon as the floors were ready, everyone was here to move them in. They had to buy a house to fit the furniture!” she laughs. continued >

Rooms with distinction The foyer faces the small formal living room, which features a handsome baby grand piano and a gracious Stanford sofa. Rich draperies accentuate the view of the pool and the lake beyond. Nicole Brioni, the owner of Designer’s Confeccions Inc., made all the draperies in the home as well as updating the landscaping. “From contemporary to traditional, every room tells a story about its owners: how we work, play, relax, renew or cook,” she says. “Every photo should convey the vision behind its creation.” One wing of the home features the husband’s study, which the wife jokingly refers to as “the President’s Room.” Floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry and an oval wood desk by Emerson et Cie create a commanding presence. Books, family photos and mementos artfully fill the bookcases. Johns worked closely with the couple to get the rooms just right. “Any good designer really listens to what their client says,” she explains. “Both of them have really great taste and they were so decisive. They were really easy to work with.” In the master bedroom foyer, a beautiful Bombay chest by Anthology is accentuated by an original oil painting of Tinkerbell, a subject with special meaning to the owners that was purchased during a trip to Hawaii. A colorful, custom-made floral arrangement finishes the design. Directly adjacent is the full master suite. Painted in a soft dove grey and complemented by ivory carpeting, this soothing space features a furniture suite of dark wood by Bernhardt. 60-inch round Michael Thomas chaises upholstered in grey silk feature striped silk accents that match the window treatments. Even the recessed ceiling is painted a matching grey for a feeling of calm and serenity. The spacious master bathroom offers dual sinks, a large freestanding soaker tub and a separate walk-behind shower. On the other side of the home, the formal dining room is the wife’s favorite area in the house. The huge wooden circular Bernhardt table invites diners to linger. “I always wanted a round table. It keeps people talking to each other,” the husband says. For this room Brioni created lush red silk cascades to add more drama. She used the window treatments that were left by the previous owner and reworked them for the guest room. The west wing is home to a fun, playfully designed kids’ room for the couple’s young son and a guest bedroom attached by a jack and jill bathroom as well as a laundry room and garage access. A gracious courtyard garden, reminiscent of those lovely Charleston gardens tucked behind brick walls, is accessible from both bedrooms as well as the nearby game room. Beyond this are the spacious kitchen and family room, the real gathering point in the home. The kitchen, obviously built with the chef in mind, has granite countertops and pecan wood cabinetry with seeded glass insets and a center island of ivory tones. The Thermador gas stove has a dramatic hood, while the side-by-side refrigerators offer plenty of food storage space for big parties. The eat-in countertops have comfortable, substantial seating as well as a nearby table for casual dining.

This open floor plan incorporates a large living area with comfortable couches facing the side-by-side fireplace and television. For big events or just plain great weather, the full corner wall of glass recesses to create a truly indoor-outdoor living space. In fact, that huge outdoor space is a big plus for this family. “It’s the only reason I bought the house,” the husband jokes. With its multiple seating areas and big outdoor kitchen there is plenty of room. He and his friends will often move the game table outdoors for some cigars, cards and guy time.

Enjoying Mother Nature The outdoors of this home are as beautiful as the inside. In the front, the mature garden beds include tall evergreen spires, palms

and flowering bushes that punctuate the lower plantings of hardy shrubs and flowering perennials. Pops of colorful annual beds give it some zest. “A home’s exterior is its face to the world, reflecting passion and personality. Capturing it takes planning and care to show its full effect,” Brioni says. A large screen enclosure protects guests relaxing around the natural freeform pool and waterfall from the hazards of biting insects and offers a lovely place for both entertainment and play. Beyond the enclosure, a lush lawn leads back towards the lake and tucked to the side, the wife’s vegetable garden and a large play structure for their son, offer practical uses. It is easy to see that this couple loves everything about their home. All in all, this home completely fits the bill.

Put the shrimp in a large baking pan and pour the melted mixture over the shrimp. Place on the center rack and cook about 10 minutes, turning occasionally. Cook until shrimp are pink and curly. Serve with French bread for dipping and lots of napkins!

Modern Tuscan design

Customized for family

This award-winning residence is a prime example of how initial architectural designs can be modified and customized to fit a family’s lifestyle. The exterior of Villa Linda has a more formal Tuscan look, with stone walls, tiled roof and an arched wooden doorway. But just step inside and you know at once that this dwelling has a personality all its own. “We like the formality of the Tuscan manor house, but inside we wanted the comfort and functionality of 21st century technology,” Bobby explains. He, Linda and their two sons live in the home as well as utilize it as a model residence for Windstar Homes, a company Bobby founded with co-principal David Lesser. A major asset of this special home is that it is very green—not the color, but ecologically green—which is critical in building cost-effective and energyefficient structures today. Among other things, its small environmental footprint is due to tankless gas water heaters, an Icynene insulation system, heat pumps with the highest SEER (Service Energy Efficiency Rating), double-insulated and impact-resistant windows, an automated lighting control system and whole-home air and water filtration systems. Yet all this high technology, while giving the homeowners a comfortable and economical lifestyle, is virtually invisible and does not detract from the comfort and beauty of the home’s design.

Crossing the threshold is like entering another world—first into a two-story tower-like foyer with walls of concrete block clad with stone and punctuated by small, narrow windows overhead and then into a spectacular courtyard dominated by a sleekly designed pool and spa. High stone walls, wood ceilings and segmented columns form shaded walkways around the clean, sleek lines of the pool edged with iridescent tiles. A 7-foot-long transitional bed faces a glass-filled gas fireplace and 60-inch flat screen television to form an outdoor den. “This is an area that merges the traditional feel with up-todate contemporary styling. We especially love the den area. We can watch TV day or night out here, even from the pool,” he smiles. Livability is one of the major concepts around which this residence is designed. “I wanted the home to have a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere—a ‘come in and stay awhile’ feeling,” says Bobby. “Every room in this house is used daily, so there is no formal living room, huge media center or guest bedroom that take up space but only get used a few days out of the year.” Functionality is key to each and every room. From the courtyard one enters the main part of the house that Bobby refers to as a “Trinity” design area. Under a 22-foot ceiling with trussed cypress beams and stone-clad walls, three major

areas—kitchen, dining and conversation/ TV—flow easily from one to another and are connected by the 5-inch distressed hickory plank flooring. Multiple French doors on either side allow daylight from the courtyard and from an outdoor dining patio on the opposite side to open up the space. At night, pendant lights add to the spacious feeling of the large room and exterior lighting around the pool and fire bowls on the lanai add an exotic flair. In the kitchen area, fully integrated appliances disappear behind traditional Tuscan style cabinetry finished in an off-

white Con Crystal paint with a coffee glaze and heirloom distressing. The dark cherry work island features a Tea Chest stain as well as heirloom distressing, which gives the cabinetry an authentic antique look. Dark Cometa granite tops the island, counters and other work spaces. Appliances include a 60-inch Wolf range with exhaust hood hidden beneath a mantel-like structure, which visually balances the fireplace and 55-inch television at the far end of the extended room. A double Sub-Zero refrigerator with four freezer drawers below, a Miele coffee station, a

Hidden amenities Although not visible at first glance, several interesting alcoves and rooms are accessible from the kitchen area. Easy to find is the wine nook, near the end of the island. It’s a good example of how Bobby chose to customize this home. The space currently holds 300 bottles of wine, with the alcove area open for soda, juice, beer and bottled water. The nook can be reconfigured to fit any combination of bottles. A large multi-purpose room, dubbed the “Martha Stewart Room” by Bobby and Linda, is another example of designing for functionality. In the center stands a long 10x4-foot island topped by a seamless slab of stunning granite that can be used for school projects, hobbies and other activities. Along the walls are laundry appliances and a porcelain sink, plus individual Internet alcoves for Bobby’s Windstar work, Linda’s household management and the kids’ homework. “I didn’t feel a need for a separate room as an office, since I can carry my phone and laptop with me into any room. Plus I enjoy working in the same space with my family whenever I can,” Bobby adds. Also accessed from the kitchen area is a moderate-sized media room—smaller than many such rooms on purpose. “In our previous home, we had a very large theater-type media room that got used only a few times a year when we had parties or guests,” explains Bobby. “In this house we designed this rectangular

area, which is sound-proofed with doubleinsulated windows, to serve as our TV center—with five flat screens so we can watch five games at once. And it’s a perfect room to listen to the 7.1 surround sound system or—thanks to the drums, keyboard and piano—we try to create our own music.”

Soothing atmosphere The master bedroom suite is a definite illustration of designing for function and for pleasure. The sleeping area is spacious and restfully decorated in a muted contemporary style. It features a fireplace, large flat screen TV, iPod docking station, beverage cooler and a coffee station to get going in the morning. The master bath is exceptional with several high tech amenities that make it so pleasant it would be hard to leave. A relaxing oval bathtub is located in the center of the room facing another flat screen TV on the far wall. A floor-to-ceiling glass wall behind the tub separates the shower and connected steam room to one side and drying-off area on the other. The entire bath area is part of the home’s sound system and wireless routers. Users can also program the water flow of the multiple showerheads, turn on soothing music and the multi-color lighting system. And, since the shower wall is glass, the homeowners can watch television at the same time.
