—Jane Austen
’’
Jane Austen is known for writing some of the most highly acclaimed novels in the literary world. While most of her works revolve around romance and society, an underlying theme is the importance of family and home. Her characters rely heavily on each other for support and love and they always seem to congregate at home. The importance of home is the main theme in this issue. We’re introducing you to a group of fellow Tampa Bay residents who have created their own versions of their perfect homes. You’ll love the homage to traditional American architecture when you see Tim and June Graney’s Craftsman bungalow. And don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild when you get your first glimpse of Adam Bohn’s unbelievable outdoor living space. From the plank bridge to the fantastical dragon, Adam has a true gift for bringing fantasy to life. Please be sure to check out our website, Housetrends.com, for additional photos of the homes featured in this issue, as well as even more home and garden inspiration. You can also keep in touch and stay up-to-date on the latest trends on our Tampa Bay Facebook page. We’re preparing for a new year here at Housetrends. We hope you enjoy the holidays Photo by Johan Roetz and we’ll see you in 2012.

working on the interior design of a home from con-
struction through final completion, an interior designer gets to know his or her client(s) very well. In the ideal relationship, the designer also becomes a partner, a problem solver and friend as well. That is the case with designer Dee Marksberry, owner of Gage-Martin Interiors and her clients, Donna and George Kurppe. “We had such a good partnership. It was fun. You have to click personality-wise and taste-wise for it to work,” Donna says. “Dee had her work cut out for her with us. I’m more simple, classic in style; George likes more ornate.” continued >

Visually relaxing At 5,500 square feet, this handsome Mediterranean style home is the perfect fit for Donna and George. With the master suite and family areas downstairs and three full bedroom suites upstairs it has room for both family and friends. It is decorated with a background palette of elegant cream used in the Venetian plaster walls and terrazzo floors. Colorful pops of burgundy, gold and green accents in the upholstery, countertops, artwork and other elements create a rich, lush ambiance. “I believe in disciplined choices,” Marksberry says. “Everything needs to flow. It takes the tension out of the space and creates visual harmony.” The home is decorated throughout with beautifully made wood furniture by Marge Carson, Haversham, and Tomlinson customized with custom-ordered finishes or stone countertops to make them uniquely suited for this client.
A handsome chest in the foyer illustrates the impact of customizing a piece. “This was one of the last pieces we ordered,” Marksberry says, lightly touching the stone countertop. “We ended up putting together our own look with this chest from Tomlinson with a custom finish.” They added an opulent onyx top that had all of Donna’s colors. “It gives the chest such a smart look,” Marksberry adds. An ornate hand carved Mayfair mirror, covered in gold leaf, hangs above the chest reflecting the lifelike silk Dancing Orchid by Diane James, whose silk orchids are found throughout the house. “She’s the only supplier I’ll use for silks because they are utterly believable,” Marksberry says. Two matching table lamps designed by Jacque Garcia for Baker sport rich red shades and sparkling Swarovski crystal pendants.
Situated at the foot of the elegantly curving staircase sits a handsome black baby grand piano. Having played as a child, it was Donna’s goal upon retiring after 38 years in the school system, to begin to play again after so many years of absence. The “player piano” option is included until the former school principal works the rust out of her fingers. The formal sitting room features a silk Oriental rug and Tomlinson furniture with gorgeous upholstery by Ardecora. Framed by a gorgeous view of the pool and canal as a backdrop, the rich fabrics and an ornate Italian Venetian glass candelabra are the showpieces of this space. George’s wood paneled study sits at the entrance to the master suite. With richly paneled bookcases and a unique, oval wood desk with alligator embossed leather chairs, it is the perfect retreat. Family mementos grace the shelves. continued >

decoratingtrends Donna holds a special fondness for the hall powder room as it is a favorite destination for her baby grandson. The hand painted mural by local artist Joanne Karpay was inspired by views off the Kurppes’ dock. It depicts regional plants and birds with one obvious exception— the monkey peeking out of the tree. That cute little fellow drew the baby’s attention every time. The master suite is truly a luxurious retreat. A massive Marge Carson bedroom suite, richly appointed in Anichini linens, sets the tone. In the sitting room, a fun Barry Dixon ottoman fronting two plush chairs is a favorite place to relax. Lush, textured carpet and elegant silk striped shades with embroidered silk side panels, sewn by local seamstress Karen Lockwood, tie all the elements of the room together. The master bathroom has many special features of its own. Around the sinks and dressing table, mosaic tiles of gold leaf, marble and onyx laid in a vertical pattern accentuate the beauty of the black striated marble counters and the ivory and black marble floors. On the Venetian plaster walls, the artist pressed banana leaves to leave a subtle textured impression. At the dressing table area, a brilliant pop of red is found in the Barry Dixon chair covered in Scalamandre red velvet. “I just fell in love with that chair the minute I saw it,” Donna laughs. “It’s a very glamorous bathroom,” Marksberry says. “But, it is also a very nurturing place for George.” continued >
OPPOSITE: Entertaining is easy thanks to the pool table and full bar. TOP RIGHT: The club room features comfortable home theatre seating in front of the television. RIGHT: Granite countertops and rich wood cabinetry set the tone for the bar.

Outstanding elements There are several unique design features sprinkled throughout the home. One element is the high-gloss Venetian plaster walls, featuring a deep eggplant color, in the dining room. Painter Christian Cardona achieved the effect by increasing the proportion of marble in the mixture and then polishing and polishing and polishing. “We used a deep merlot for a romantic evening color. Because of its dark color I wanted it to be reflective,” Marksberry says. A beautiful glass sculpture, by London artist Amanda Brisbane, graces the table. The kitchen, breakfast area and family room are usually the center of activity in this home. Accented in soft aqua, Donna’s favorite color, the Habersham breakfast table and accent furniture set a more casual tone. The open kitchen plan has rich cherry cabinets with green granite countertops flecked with burgundy. “I kept going back to that same piece at the stone yard,” Donna says. Overstuffed chairs and couches face the fireplace for relaxing and watching the television which, when not in use, is cleverly hidden behind a piece of artwork. Large glass doors open onto the balcony facing the pool and lake. Situated off of the family room, the club room is a favorite destination whenever guests come over. With a large screen television and movie style seating, a full bar and a pool table, it is the place to be for parties. Adjacent to the club room is the fitness area complete with a workout room, sauna and shower. continued >

Going on buying trips with Marksberry helped the Kurppes see the many choices available and learn about the levels of craftsmanship. It also allowed them to see how pieces could be customized to their particular wishes. Also helpful was working with Marksberry’s husband, Chuck, who is an art broker. He helped them select the many beautiful pieces found throughout the house. Just as impressive as inside are the outdoor spaces including a patio which runs the length of the home, an elegant pool, and a whimsical pool bath painted by Joanne Karpay with a seashell motif. The pool bath mirror and chest, embedded with shells, complete the effect.
An enviable retreat Beyond the pool and lawns lay the quiet waters of the canal leading to Lake Thonotosassa. George originally bought their Stonelake Ranch lot in 2004 after searching for just the right place. At that time, the community was still a working ranch and most of the roads were dirt. George, who grew up in Brooklyn, New York, had always dreamed of living on a lake. “I fell in love with Lake Thonotosassa,” George says. “I always wanted to live on a lake and it was just beautiful out here.” Alvarez Homes began construction in 2005 and in 2007 they were one of the first homes completed in the development. Situated on a short canal, their home is just minutes off of the main body of the lake. “We love it because we can see the lake but it is so quiet and private here,” Donna says. Far from the busy world of George’s business and the hustle and bustle of school, Donna and George have found their personal retreat.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we all have that one room in the house that gets a little disorganized. It’s the rarely used spare bedroom, office or den, where all the extra “stuff” is deposited and left with the promise that it will be taken care of later. When company arrives, expected or unexpected, the door is promptly shut and the mess miraculously disappears. F The homeowners of this Tarpon Springs home used to have their own version of the catchall room. It was this room where gifts were wrapped, school projects were completed and hobbies were started. Life was busy and the family was thankful to have a designated area to handle all the activities. A few years ago, when the kids grew up and moved out on their own, the couple decided it was time to make a change. “My husband had his own man cave in another part of the house. But over the years, he’s collected more toys so I agreed to turn the room into his new man cave,” the wife says with a laugh.
Go Gators!
OVERLEAF: The 80-inch television sits in a custombuilt cabinet from Old Biscayne Designs. ABOVE: The homeowner’s cigar collection is housed behind the comfortable Leathercraft theater chairs. OPPOSITE: An old craft room was renovated into the new man cave, complete with travertine floors and wood ceiling beams.
The room that once housed the children’s craft room is now home to a larger, masculine, yet inviting, space where the couple can watch a movie on the 80-inch television or the husband can enjoy a cigar. The décor was very important to both husband and wife. They enlisted the help of Nancy Osborne, a designer with Annabelle’s Fine Home Furnishings, to bring the room to life. “We’ve been fortunate enough to travel to Europe,” the homeowner says. “We rented a villa outside of Florence, in a little town called Reggello and we fell in love with the old-world and Frenchinspired design.” To achieve a look that also complements the Colonial French home, Osborne suggested adding the dark brown beams to the renovated room’s vaulted ceiling and warm tumbled travertine to the floors. “We used the travertine throughout the entire first floor of the home, it creates a sophisticated, rich look,” she adds. Another challenge Osborne faced was to somehow incorporate the couple’s love for the Florida Gators into the design. “We
both attended the University of Florida,” the wife says. “We didn’t want to decorate in orange and blue, but we wanted to show our team spirit.” In honor of the Gators, Osborne covered the walls in handmade Vahallan wallpaper embossed with an alligator hide design. To complement the unique walls and tie the entire space together, Osborne added the Harden desk with alligator leather insets and the Leathercraft theater chairs, which feature the manufacturer’s Crocodile Marrone leather. The rich décor masks a very important element in the room—technology. The homeowners can operate everything from the television to the lighting with an iPad. “It’s amazing,” the homeowner says. “It has a daytime and evening program and it is so easy to operate.” During the day the lights are adjusted accordingly and the television automatically turns on to MSNBC. Once the sun goes down, the lighting brightens and the husband can enjoy a game on ESPN. continued >

Great outdoors The iPad also controls the couple’s new outdoor living space, located just beyond the man cave’s beautiful arched door. “We weren’t outdoor people, essentially because our back yard was not inviting or accommodating,” the homeowner says. That has all changed thanks to an astounding transformation. The existing pool and spa were refurbished, along with an old, outdated fireplace. Osborne suggested carrying the same travertine found inside, outside. A gazebo now houses an outdoor living room, accentuated with glazed stucco walls and comfortable Woodard Landgrave furniture. Finished in late 2010, the back yard was a popular spot this past summer. The homeowners have hosted several small and large gatherings, including a 20th birthday party for their daughter. They rented a giant movie screen, which could be viewed from both sides. “It took me back to the days when driveins were popular,” the wife says. “It was a great idea. Everyone lounged in the pool and around the table and enjoyed watching movies.” The couple now spends a lot more time outdoors and especially enjoys cooking in their new kitchen. The Alfresco grill, refrigerator, icemaker and sink make cooking dinner a breeze. But it is the Big Green Egg that has captivated the husband’s attention. “He was never really interested in grilling, now he’s ordering cookbooks and bringing home different kinds of meat to grill or smoke,” says the wife with a laugh, who adds that the Big Green Egg also acts as a pizza oven. continued >

ABOVE: The original fireplace was redesigned to be double-sided. Old brick was removed and replaced with travertine.
Even though their children are on their own, the renovation has brought the family closer together. “We now have a wonderful place to get together, rain or shine,” the homeowner says. “Sometimes I find it hard to believe this is our home. It feels as if we’re in a completely different place, but it is still familiar and it feels like home.”

Just because summer is winding down
doesn’t mean your social life should
go out like the coals on your summer barbeque! You may have gathered around the grill and perched on the patio a lot this summer season, but we bet you still have a hankerin’ to keep the fun alive this fall. Whether you want to host a big blowout or simply want to hang with the gang, you’ll keep the fun alive with these party ideas.

PIG ROAST
The “Pig Easy”
If you want to go whole hog with your fall party, then you probably want to consider a pig roast. Some might say a pig roast is the perfect “man party,” but most would also agree it’s a wondrous event. There’s something about gathering around the fire while the beast slowly rotates on the spit that gets your mouth waterin’ and tummy grumblin’! For those who relish the idea of roasting the pig themselves, Spitjack.com bills itself as a website for “men who cook.” The company is the creation of a former chef-restaurateur from Worchester, MA and specializes in rotisseries, fire pits, meat injectors and just about any paraphernalia you could want for seriously good outdoor cooking. The only thing you can’t get from Spitjack.com is the hog itself, so you will need to locate a source for a whole fresh hog. Talk to a local butcher, or contact a Latin or Asian market to see about availability. Find out if the hog will arrive fresh or frozen and if it will be prepped (hair and internal organs removed) so you can allow sufficient time to defrost and marinate. If roasting the pig yourself will only happen “when pigs fly” then hire a local company to cater your party with side dishes and all, so you can sit back and wallow in the fun!
TAILGATING
Tailgate parties for home and away
Fall may be tailgate party season, but don’t think tailgating is only for those who have tickets to the game! Take the offensive approach and run with a tailgate party in your own driveway that is just as much fun as being “away” at the game as it is at “home” with friends and neighbors. For tailgate novices we offer a few additional ways to score the extra point at your own tailgate party. Basic necessities for any tailgate include coolers, grills, chairs, radios/TVs, tables, plates, cups, utensils and napkins. If you want to go pro then visit Nationaltailgate.com or Americantailgater.com and find the ultimate in tailgating gear. These aficionados understand the passion of tailgating and offer relevant products for the most hardcore tailgater. Also check out Snackpalette.com for a disposable/recyclable plate that gives you a free hand for chanting and cheering while holding your plate, cup, fork and napkin in the other hand. continued >

FONDUE
We’re fond of fondue
Now that we have plates, how about serving up grilled pizzas for a change? Simply replace your burgers and condiments with pizza toppings and ready-made pizza crusts and you can still easily serve a crowd. Ready-made pizza crusts should be grilled 2-4 minutes per side on an indirect flame, then add toppings and grill another 8-10 minutes. When choosing your toppings, be sure to offer a good selection of veggies and meats that will please everyone. If you prefer to stick with grilled burgers and hot dogs, then why not treat your guests to a selection of gourmet toppings? There is a plethora of topping ideas available at Foodnetwork. com. For fun, create a menu board with topping combinations and name your sandwiches after the teams, their players or your friends at the party.
Nothing says “fall” better than bountiful amounts of food served on platters and ready for dipping into delectable cheese, chocolate and meat sauces. A traditional fondue party includes three fondue courses: a cheese fondue with bread and vegetables (don’t forget to include crisp, tart fall apples), followed by a course of meat and sauces and finishes with a chocolate dessert fondue with cake and fruits. Have fun with your guests by displaying a set of fondue rules like (1) no double dipping and (2) the person who drops food in the pot has to kiss the person next to him and so on. Accompany each course with a fall beverage such as apple cider, a full bodied ale or dark roast coffee. If you’d rather, you can simplify your fondue party by limiting it to one course of either a cheese fondue or dessert fondue and accompany it with the appropriate appetizer wine or dessert wine. Learn everything you need to know about fondue, including how to choose a fondue set and accessories, recipes and fondue etiquette at Fonduebits.com.
What’s all the fuss about?
If your method of entertaining tends toward small and simple then the following fall entertaining options will suit your style just fine!

DESSERTS
Would you like to see the dessert menu?
Skip the main course and go right for the amazing desserts of the season with a “desserts only” party. Just think of the possibilities: pumpkin cheesecakes, praline chewy bars, applesauce spice cupcakes, cranberry nut bread, just to name a few! With so many delicious options, now you just need to email your guests and ask each to make and bring one amazing fall dessert to share at the party. To insure you get a variety of desserts, ask each person to let you know what they will be bringing when they RSVP. End the party by giving each guest a bakery box or disposable take-home container so everyone can take home samples of the leftovers. Yum! With so many great reasons to get together with friends and family, it’s no wonder fall is the season of plenty! Be sure to harvest the good times with friends and family in bountiful and tasty ways!

Passion for medieval times leads to unique outdoor living space By Amy Diehl | Photos by Joe Traina The back yard behind the home of Adam Bohn is a place where the lines between fantasy and reality become a bit blurred. Fire flickers in large stone urns and mist floats eerily across the surface of the water as it tumbles down over rock ledges, while a mythical dragon keeps watch. F For Adam, this is his reality. As owner of online gaming company Artix Entertainment, Adam has more than 130 million registered users playing AdventureQuest Worlds and other games within a medieval setting. His home is both a place to live and, on occasion, the perfect place to shoot scenes for his games. Several commercials and an independent movie called “Mr. Engagement have been shot here as well. continued >

The upper patio is protected from the elements by a roof and carved columns and arches. OPENING SPREAD: Firepots are perched at each end of the stone pool edge, adding a dramatic touch in the evenings. RIGHT: A mixture of plants, including these Tai plants, help create texture.
Fun and fantasy intersect Designed to evoke a medieval chateau, this home comes complete with a small moat and flickering gas lamps flanking the driveway. But it is the rear of the home where the party really begins. Large glass doors across the back of the home open onto a raised seating patio featuring handsome Brown Jordan outdoor furniture. Columns crowned by high arches divide this upper patio from the lower level. “My philosophy is that the outdoor living space has to reflect the owner’s personality,” says Ryan Hughes, the lead designer and a principle in Outdoor Nation, the company that designed and executed the project. “The first thing that Adam told my designer, Adam Heath, and myself was that it had to be fun. Adam (Bohn) was really involved with the project from the start and he and Adam Heath really got along well. They are both ‘techy’ people.” Hughes credits Adam Bohn with the idea to add the dragon sculpture. “He also had the idea of the moat and drawbridge in the front of the home and allowed us to take that idea and run with it.” The primary focal point of this outdoor space is a large, raised, rectangular pool with a tumbling waterfall over the fieldstone front face. In essence, this pool is a reverse infinity edge design in which the overflow wall becomes a main feature. Water trickles down the stone wall and splashes into a lower trough which runs the full length of both the pool and hot tub areas. A plank bridge leads to a raised platform spotlighted by a large concrete dragon and a very large spa. continued >

he flow and texture of the space was an important aspect of the design of this project. “We used texture variation to define the spaces, Hughes says.

10/12/11 12:13:02 PM
To further keep with the medieval theme, flaming firepots perch at either end of the stone pool edge and a large firepit dominates the far corner. Jets of
water shoot out of the deck, arc out over the trough and into the pool, adding motion and visual excitement. And, with the push of a button, a bank of billowing
fog rises off the water. This mist system by Fogco, creates the mood and also cools the area at the same time. “When the fires are glowing and the mist is rolling, it creates an amazing effect,” Hughes says. For Adam, having fun was the first priority. “We have lots of functions here,” Adam says and according to those around him, you never know what will happen. They once pranked Matt Stover, the author of several Star Wars novels, who had come over for dinner, by having ninjas and other camouflaged characters suddenly appear out of nowhere. Somehow they managed to maintain a straight face the entire time. Another time, “we fit 23 people in the hot tub just to see if we could do it,” Adam laughs. At a recent party, the visiting mermaids were a huge hit with the neighborhood children. OPPOSITE TOP: A plank bridge leads to the raised platform area, which houses the dragon and oversized spa. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: Jets of water shoot out from the deck, over the trough and into the pool for visual interest. ABOVE: Comfortable outdoor seating, accented with off white and red cushions, are scattered throughout the space. An additional feature created to meet Adam’s entertaining needs is the raised platform area by the firepit. Under normal circumstances, it hosts a handsome outdoor seating selection by Source Outdoor. Come party time, this becomes the band stand and it is fully wired for sound.
common mistake people make is they use too many types of plants. Then they have a hard time keeping up with them.” On this project, a bed of Hawthorne, bamboo and Tai plants in one area contrast with low growing juniper and camellia bushes in another.
Practical purposes
Otherworldly features
Adam purchased the home from builder Brian Kahrs, owner of Bay Luxury Builders, while it was still under construction. This turned into a fortuitous partnership, as Kahrs was able to customize the property exactly to Adam’s specifications. In the meantime, they became good friends and Kahrs has since given up his business to work for Artix Entertainment full time. One of Adam’s ideas that Kahrs implemented during construction was to extend the covered outdoor living area to create a large, outdoor kitchen. Off to the right of the raised patio, the outdoor kitchen centers around an enormous granite-topped table which seats up to ten people. Around the perimeter of the space, a Fire Magic gas grill and under-counter refrigerator plus a full sink cover all the cooking needs. The flow and texture of the space was an important aspect of the design of this project. “We used texture variation to define the spaces,” Hughes says. Hughes and Heath chose smooth travertine marble for the raised patio adjacent to the house and for the raised patios that flank the pool in either corner. In the lower central corridor they used a pressed concrete product call MegaArbel to create a different, earth-inspired texture. “We wanted a clean, more formal effect close to the house with the feeling of stepping down into Middle Earth as you moved close to the pool,” Hughes explains. The rough flagstone walls of the pool edge add another strong textural element. The plantings in this project have been kept fairly simple. “We used blocks of plants to create texture,” says Hughes. “A
Lighting was also a very important aspect of this project. From recessed spotlights in the ground, to the gas lamps out front, to the LED lighting in the pool, the lighting was an integral component to properly setting the stage and tying the space together. In fact, it is one of Adam’s favorite elements of the property. “Coming home at night to see the glowing gas
62 housetrends.com 056-062 nFEA Fantasy.indd 62
lamps that line the drive really makes me grateful for what I have been able to accomplish. It is still hard to believe sometimes,” he says. The quest is not over yet though. While Adam loves the character the dragon brings to his castle, the search is not over for the ultimate creature. And when he does find it, you can be sure it will be out of this world.

led Old Ne Custom Craftsman bungalow a perfect fit
By Lyla Haggard | Photos by Johan Roetz From the copper roof to the copper kitchen sink, this custom Craftsman bungalow exemplifies the efforts and coordinated design that stems from teamwork. Tim and June Graney say their goal was to successfully blend old and new when they set out to create their Culbreath Bayou residence. The result is a home that fits their lifestyle: a charming street façade using a variety of materials and textures, and a more modern interior with lots of light and open areas complemented by an inviting back yard.

Charming and cozy Tim and June, along with daughter, Emily, plus two active Weimaraners—Coby and Bronnie—and two cats—Chloe and Rocky—moved from Ft. Myers, where they had a Key West style house. Along with Tim’s new job and their relocation, the Graneys wanted a different environment for their Tampa home. They didn’t intend to build, “…but the existing housing stock in South Tampa at that time just didn’t meet our needs,” says Tim. Luckily, at an open house, a realtor there introduced the Graneys to Jon Solomon, owner of Javic Homes. They conducted some online research, checked out his website and then visited some Javic Homes projects in progress before selecting Solomon as their builder. Eight months were needed to locate a lot, but, once that was accomplished in July of 2010, the family moved into their new 3,044-square-foot home in May 2011… in less than a year. It took the builder only four months for full design and selections and just seven months for construction
and installations. The pool area was completed after move-in. “My favorite part of this home is the front exterior,” notes Solomon. “The metal and shingle roof, stacked stone, shake and horizontal siding all look great together. But it was challenging to get them to ‘play nice together.’” The lot itself is unique with several grand oak trees, which, while attractive and providing shade, necessitated substantial re-design of the backyard pool area. “We had to modify the house 180 degrees—exchanging a lanai for a cabana and smaller patio, moving them from one side of the yard to the other—due to the trees, which the city does not allow to be removed,” Tim explains. “It took an extra six weeks to re-design around them. The trees were a nuisance, but now we’re really happy to have them.” June adds, “The changes were all for the better. Now I actually prefer our cabana over the lanai we had originally planned.”

Cheerful family spaces
The changes were all for the better. Now I actually prefer our cabana over the lanai we had originally planned.
Inside, a formal dining room faces the street while the large kitchen and family room open onto the pool and back yard, which is landscaped with a tropical motif. The spacious family room features lots of windows on the ground level with additional smaller windows nestled high near the two-story cathedral ceiling, giving an airy feel to the room. Comfortable leather sofas face a largescreen TV surrounded by family photos. Beautiful stone-topped counters, using granite that resembles wavy Native American sand patterns, separate the kitchen from the family room and the sunny dining area. continued >
OVERLEAF: The inviting faรงade of the Craftsman bungalow boasts a mix of stone, shake and siding, topped with a metal and shingle roof. LEFT: The relaxing cabana provides a quiet respite. RIGHT: The pool features a spa and flat beach entry with built-in holes for umbrellas.

Solomon placed the major kitchen appliances so as to provide an efficient workflow and surrounded them with lots of counter space and cabinetry allowing convenient access to smaller appliances, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans. Soft-close drawers add to the ease of food preparation. All three Graneys cook, so they selected appliances to fit their needs. A deep, hammered-copper farm sink reiterates the theme of traditional-yet-contemporary. “I wanted something to blend the old and new, and it took me four suppliers to find the perfect sink,” June says. Connecting the kitchen components is a tumbled travertine backsplash. Throughout the downstairs, hickory flooring was selected not only for its unique, hand-contoured and scraped appearance, but also because it has a very hard surface, one that doesn’t scratch easily. “That’s important with two active Weimaraners,” June laughs. June also loves her butler’s pantry, especially the wine cabinet with shelving for stemware behind antique amber glass with copper beaded caning atop the wine cooler itself. The design of the glass doors is repeated from the front entryway to the residence. continued >
OPPOSITE: The dining room features a formal, yet comfortable design, and greets guests as they walk through the front door. ABOVE: An elegant stained glass light fixture hangs above the table in the breakfast area. RIGHT: The living room’s nearly two-story vaulted ceiling creates a dramatic effect.

Special places The second story of the Graney house features two bedroom/bathroom suites—a master suite for Tim and June and another for 21-year-old daughter Emily, who brags that her suite is larger than that of her parents. Decorating her rooms are numerous medals won in Special Olympics and other competitions for baseball (she is nicknamed “Slugger”), ice skating, bowling, horseback riding and cheerleading. Both suites have spacious spa baths with reclaimed cherry wood cabinetry and granite countertops similar to those in the kitchen. Both have walk-in closets. Emily’s has built-in cubbyhole shelving to hold her collection of stuffed animals, and her parents’ suite has an interior doorway leading to a large attic storage space. Conveniently located between the suites is the laundry area, another favorite for June. All three Graneys agreed that they love the back yard: the grand oaks, the pool and hot tub, a relaxing cabana and a charming patio for outdoor entertaining. The oval pool features a semi-circular, flat beach entry shelf with built-in holes for shady umbrellas…the perfect spot to relax on a hot summer day. Communication was the key to the creation of the Graney home. During the building process, the family rented a house just up the street from their lot, and Tim walked the site every night, frequently—2-3 times a week—calling Solomon for updates or with questions. “I liked the fact that Jon allowed us to be involved…he didn’t act like he had all the answers to everything, and we liked that,” said Tim. “He listened.” Notes Solomon, “Tim and June were great to work with. From the beginning, they knew what they wanted, and we communicated with each other very easily.” TOP: The master bedroom is decorated in relaxing green hues. MIDDLE LEFT: Rich tan and brown tones create a relaxing master bath. MIDDLE RIGHT: The oversized shower in the master bathroom features beige and brown tile. BOTTOM: A comfortable guest bedroom offers the perfect place to relax. OPPOSITE TOP: Unique blue furniture creates a captivating retreat for the homeowners’ daughter. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: A shelf holds the daughter’s numerous medals from sports competitions.

“Yes, you can have a beautiful home built without the drama! Javic Homes’ main appeal is they build great homes, but they also communicate with you at every stage of the house planning/ house building process. Everyone at Javic was a real pleasure to work with and always just a phone call or email away. Not only were they very professional - returning calls and emails, answering all of our questions and addressing any concerns in a very timely manner - but they really took the time to make sure we understood the process of building a house and most importantly - they made it easy, enjoyable, and drama free!! That is quite an accomplishment! We were so pleased with Javic and how they built our home that we begged them to build our new office.” - Andrew Shein & Tien Tien

Don’t think of gray as dingy, dusty or drab any longer, because it’s anything but. This cool neutral can be a great shady and smoky tone that pairs well with everything from buttery yellows and golds to bright jewel tones and it’s the perfect accent to anything black.
Gray
“
is a perfect neutral. A lovely foundation color for interiors or fashion, you’d be surprised how a little gray could light up your day!”

Renovation leads to a light and bright kitchen By Abby Weingarten | Photos by Johan Roetz continued >

kitchentrends For 19 years,
a Valrico homeowner clipped maga-
zine ads and amassed design ideas, hoping to one day transform her outdated kitchen into a chic culinary paradise. Back in March, that longtime dream began to materialize. F “The kitchen was octagonally shaped with only one very small opening, and it was totally ’80s,” the homeowner says. “There was very limited countertop space, and limited space in the cabinets because everything was cut to mirror the angles of an eight-sided ceiling.”
A fluid design The homeowner enlisted the help of Ken Karlovich, owner of Kitchen Pro of Brandon and Tampa to help with the renovation. His first step was to reconfigure the ceiling into a rectangle and lift its height. Next, he knocked out the dining room wall to create a blank slate. “Ken was able to take my ideas, bring all of them together and implement them. The end result was just terrific,” the homeowner says, adding that in just five short weeks, she had her kitchen utopia. “He had such an eye for what I wanted.” What she wanted was an open kitchen in which she could teach her two teenagers how to cook, and entertain relatives on the holidays. By extending the kitchen area into the formal dining room, Karlovich created fluidity, maximized the view of the pool and gave the homeowner an abundance of countertop space. “I wanted to make it airy, open, unpretentious and have that casual Florida look,” the homeowner explains.
Looking toward the future Achieving that ambiance was a collaborative effort. Karlovich handled the cabinetry and blueprint overhaul, while the homeowner contracted out the installation for the new tile and stainless steel appliances. The maple cabinetry, from Kitchen Craft, is painted white with a custom brushstroke finish. A few glassfront cabinet doors add visual interest to the walls, while Blue Pearl granite countertops add the perfect touch of color. Vertical knobs from Hardware Resources, under-cabinet lighting and an Elkay stainless steel undermount sink tie the space together. Karlovich, whose company has been operating for 18 years, notes that the homeowner’s preferences were in line with today’s most cutting-edge trends.

“Lighter colors are coming back. A couple of years ago, we did a lot of dark kitchens, and now the trend is lighter,” he says. “White is a neutral color, so you can pretty much change your floor or countertop if you change your mind, and it will look good. White will always be in fashion.” Unique amenities, such as a tuckedaway wine rack and a celestial lighting constellation on the ceiling, put the homeowner’s personal stamp on the space. “The lighting had to be completely redone, and she was able to arrange the lights so they’d shine directly on the cabinets,” Karlovich says. “She put in dimmers, too, which really added a lot to the look.”
Vision is reality The look is so eye-popping that Karlovich has since sent several clients to the homeowner’s kitchen to brainstorm modern cabinetry ideas. “This kitchen came out so nice, and I felt really good about it because I knew how happy the homeowner was with it,” Karlovich says. “A lot of people save a lifetime to redo their kitchen, and they work hard for that money. Every job is rewarding to me when the customer is happy.” To this day, when the homeowner strolls into her cooking oasis and flips on the sparkling array of lights, she says to herself: “I can’t believe this is my house.”
