We couldn’t agree more with Ms. Austen. There is nothing quite like spending a relaxing afternoon under the clear blue sky, taking in all the beauty that nature has to offer. As this issue came together, we realized that many of the homeowners featured have this same passion for the great outdoors. Our cover story is just one of the spectacular outdoor living spaces you will discover in this issue. The homeowners were vacationing in Maui when they came up with the idea for their backyard oasis. Complete with palm trees, fire bowls and pagodas, this tropical retreat encourages relaxation. This issue also tells the story of John and Xenia Maye, and how they succeeded in accomplishing their goal of creating their dream kitchen. Our Decorating Trends highlights a dramatic home filled with eclectic art and accessories. For
homeowners who have moved 15 times in the past 25 years, it was time to build a home they had envisioned themselves in for a long time. One with everything they always talked about and one centered on a stunning lake view that is visible from almost every room.
Truly Tuscan The homeowners knew they wanted a Mediterranean-style home, as many of the homes in Tampa are, but they really wanted to focus on a Tuscan-specific look, which started with the exterior of the home. The home builder, Campagna Homes, was able to showcase this specific look with brick detailing around the windows, which gives the home that special Tuscan flair, especially when paired with columns as you reach the front door. Once inside, the home opens up to high, beamed ceilings and rustic wood flooring, with an overall warm color
scheme. There is a hallway, complete with a barrel ceiling that runs the entire width of the house, which the homeowners call “the gallery.” The living room and dining room sit across from one another with the bar and wine cellar close at hand. The homeowners chose this layout to create a space where guests would naturally come together. “When people come to the house, instead of congregating in the kitchen like in so many houses, they automatically go to the bar, which is within this entertaining area we created,” says the homeowner.
OPENING SPREAD: The screened-in back patio overlooks the lake and features a pool and outdoor seating. OPPOSITE: The homeowners’ Tuscan vision came to life in this home, built by Campagna Homes, complete with brick details and entryway columns. ABOVE: The beautiful view is what the home was built around. Almost every room in the home has a gorgeous lake view. RIGHT: This hallway runs the width of the home and features a dramatic barrel ceiling. The homeowners call this “the gallery.”

Although the kitchen may not be a gathering place for their guests, it is a spot where the homeowners spend a lot of their time. One side of the kitchen features a breakfast bar with a coffeemaker and microwave—an ideal space to grab a quick piece of toast in the morning. This is also the only section of the kitchen that features overhead cabinetry. There are pullout drawers built into the island, which is what the homeowners use for all their kitchen storage needs. More brickwork can be found around the range for a dramatic Tuscan look in keeping with the Mediterranean theme. The kitchen is open to a comfortable living room that the homeowners often relax in. “We do a lot of cooking, but many times we take turns, so it’s nice that when we’re not in the kitchen we can be in a comfortable space where we can still talk and there are no walls up between us,” says the homeowner. “It’s probably the room we live in the most.”
ABOVE: The homeowners knew they wanted a beamed ceiling from the conception of their house. The detail brings a rustic and Tuscan look to the home. ABOVE RIGHT: The dining room, which sits just past the foyer and across from the living room, is in the perfect entertaining spot. The wine cellar is also in close proximity, rounding out the entertaining area of the home. RIGHT: True lovers of wine, the homeowners’ collection sits beautifully on display in the wine cellar. OPPOSITE TOP: The homeowners do a lot of cooking, and the kitchen has everything they need at their fingertips. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: The comfortable family room sits directly off the kitchen and is a room where the couple can be found every day.

Interior intuition The homeowners did the entire interior decorating for the house on their own. Specific visions were thought of well before the house was even finished being built—especially the bedrooms. The home includes a first floor master with French doors that lead out to a private balcony where the homeowners can take in the view any time they want. The master also includes separate, his and her master baths. The wife’s master bath is all about relaxation with a soaking tub, while the husband’s bath features a steam shower.
All of the guest bedrooms are on the second floor, and all have themes based on the homeowners’ vast travels. One of the bedrooms has a Chinese theme and is decorated with items the homeowners collected during their time in Asia, while the second guest bedroom features an African theme. The third guest room is a calm retreat the homeowners have dubbed the “lake room” due to the private balcony overlooking the serene view. “We really did build the house around the view,” says the homeowner. “The use of French doors and large windows help keep the focus on the view because we wanted everyone’s eye to go outside, even when they came in.” TOP LEFT: One of three guest bedrooms, this room has a Chinese theme and was inspired by the couple’s time spent in Asia. TOP RIGHT: Another worldly guest bedroom takes on an African theme inspired by the couple’s trip to Africa. RIGHT: This hallway, flanked with bookshelves, leads to a quiet and private sitting room. OPPOSITE TOP: The master bedroom is elegant and simple, complete with lighter beamed ceilings and French doors that lead out to a balcony with more stunning views. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: The homeowners have separate master baths; this being the wife’s, which features a soaking tub and glass shower.

Although the house has large gathering spaces, there are also spots sprinkled within the home where the homeowners can get away and relax in private. The wife’s favorite spot for this is a hallway library that leads to a sitting room where she can enjoy some quiet time reading a book. For the husband, his office doubles as a room where he can get business done, but also relax on lazy days.
Building perfection The homeowners already had a relationship with Campagna Homes, as they built a previous home for them, so the working relationship was smooth sailing from the beginning. “They are not beginner homeowners,” says Michael Campagna. “They are really educated with what they know and what they want.” For these homeowners, the experience of moving so many times helped them develop a sense of what they really wanted in a home tailor-made for them. “I think you refine your understanding of what you really want, and I think it also helps you understand how home design evolves over time,” say the homeowners. “We always keep an eye on the trends and look at where design is headed in the future.”

Couple brings the serenity of Maui back home By Lyla Haggard | Photos by Joe Traina
While Florida is known as a vacationland for many Northerners, the owners of this magnificent Carrollwood lakefront estate were relaxing in Maui when the concept for their backyard retreat began to take shape. F The couple had traveled to the Hawaiian island to enjoy a much-deserved vacation after tackling a top-to-bottom renovation of their 10,000-square-foot residence. They returned home with much more than a tan. continued >

Creating a vacation-like atmosphere Within six months that daydream became reality, thanks to the combined efforts of landscape designer Ryan Hughes of Outdoor Nation and interior designer Mary DeVincenzo. Further developing David Conner’s preliminary drawings, Hughes expanded the homeowners’ ideas into a fully-integrated lifestyle concept. DeVincenzo had been working on the home’s interior décor during its renovation, and it was she who suggested Hughes for the landscaping component. By working in tandem, they were able to insure that the panoramic view of the pool, lawn and lake blended well with the color palette, finishes and furniture inside the residence. “Our company specializes in creating outdoor living spaces, not just a pool and a patio,” Hughes explains. “I wanted to replicate for the homeowner the same feeling here in his yard that he experienced sitting under a pergola on the beach in Hawaii.” Hughes began the design for the one-acre area by focusing on five functional areas: pool and spa; alfresco dining; conversation areas; open-air study and a small island with fire pit connected by a footbridge. “Ryan and I worked well together on this project because we both believe that function precedes form,” says DeVincenzo. Using this approach, designers first consider the various functions that will occur in the space, and then follow with specific forms, such as the shape of the pool or the style of lounge furniture, necessary to carry out those activities. continued > OVERLEAF: This secluded pagoda offers views of the lake and back yard. The entire 44,000-square-foot area was gutted down to bare dirt…somewhat like a blank canvas for an artist…and two levels were created. The upper section, supported by a three and a half-foot stem (retaining) wall and gracefully delineated by a curving cast concrete balustrade, includes the pool, a fountain/ entertainment area and a cabana/pool house with outdoor kitchen. Approximately 10,000 square feet were allocated to the
swimming pool and spa area in order to balance the horizontal expanse of the home itself. The Prism Blue Pebble Tec surface of the 16x32-foot pool features specks of abalone to add sparkle to the already inviting water. Two lively water features contribute structural interest plus relaxing sounds. At one end of the pool, a circular courtyard with a bubbling fountain displays benches and low wall seating designed for conversation and casual dinners for

thirty or more. A high bar top table and barstools provide another seating option in the pool house/cabana, whose dramatic dark walnut-stained cypress ceiling will be repeated along the sheltered walkway of the house. The outdoor kitchen with grill is also located in the sheltered area. The Oceanside glass tiles behind the grill are identical to those lining the pool, thus providing visual unity to the upper tier.

Enticing amenities Four tall date palms and two matching pergolas for dining and lounging frame the pool area. “The owners placed a lot of trust in me, since those palms—straight out of the desert in Arizona— are pretty expensive,” laughs Hughes, “but I guess I earned that trust as we went along.” For the pool area, DeVincenzo selected Brown Jordan lounges, tables and chairs. By choosing a crisp blue and white patterned fabric and dark wood stain for the frames, she continued the tropical theme. “I call it a refined West Indies style. It’s not multi-colored so it feels more sophisticated, but it’s still fun,” she explains. As Hughes points out, most people want the latest technologies but don’t use them unless they are easy to understand. So when he installed the mechanicals to turn off and on the lights, pool, fire bowls and spa, he put everything on one operating system, allowing the homeowners to operate everything from a convenient programmable remote or even their cell phones.
The lower section of the yard with large grassy areas, flagstone walkways, and benches facing the lake has a more casual atmosphere. Hughes built a spacious pagoda to be used as an outdoor study by the homeowner, who is an author. Another pagoda serves as a shady spot for relaxation. A charming wooden footbridge with wrought iron railings leads to a fire pit with benched seating, all completely surrounded by water. Throughout the grounds, the foundation plantings include fuchsia Bougainvillea, hardy red Knockout Roses, orange Birds of Paradise, Indian Hawthorns, Juniper groundcover, Oleander and Flax Lilies. Many are potted, particularly in the pool area, in large urns that are automatically watered through the bottom of the pedestal. Two gracefully curving palms were selected specifically to be placed along the lake to enhance the view from the residence. Floratam St. Augustine grass was selected for the lower sections because it grows well in the Florida climate; grass around the fountain courtyard is Zoyasia, often used for golf fairways,

since it grows together more tightly and provides a smoother surface for tables and chairs.
Aloha, relaxation The homeowners are delighted with the results of their Maui reverie. They especially appreciate the expert manner in which Hughes, with DeVincenzo, translated their ideas into reality. “We knew that Mary and Ryan would represent our taste, and there was never any second guessing,” they explain. “We’re amazed at how effortlessly they turned our back yard into a paradise.”

Ring the doorbell. When you do, you’ll know that this home is unique. Iqbal and Janet only recently moved into their dream house. The cantilevered façade of this 5,000 square-foot postmodern waterfront residence features a harmonious asymmetrical design with a defined geometric emphasis. Flat roofs and strong horizontal lines, accented by a narrow stacked stone façade made of uncultured marble and granite remnants from China, are counter-balanced by a tall stairwell tower rising on the right. F Garages on either side are minimized by shady overhangs and the xeriscaped landscaping signals the homeowners’ concern for the environment. In the intimate entry, just three steps above ground level, a lovely tri-level water feature trickles quietly to the left of an impressive custom door of Brazilian mahogany with ebony stain and stainless steel strips. F But go ahead and ring the doorbell. That’s when the fun begins. Tropical steel drums and island rhythms welcome family and friends with musical flair. “Most of the time, people will be dancing around when I open the door,” laughs Janet. “Our guests are in a wonderful mood before we even say hello.” continued >

A memory of courtyards The couple wanted to build a residence that would be distinctively different from traditional Florida homes. They both love living on the water: Janet grew up here in St. Petersburg and Iqbal was reared in Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya, on the Indian Ocean. Both have lived and worked in a variety of international locales and wanted their house to reflect the many cultural influences in their lives. Iqbal explains, “I came to thinking about this house from a different viewpoint. Rather than the physical building, I first focused more on what I call a social vision—a way to capture how we hope to live in the house—with large open spaces that encourage conversation, interaction and harmony with nature. I grew up amid courtyards with fountains and flowers, where family and friends gathered to relax and converse, and I wanted to recreate the essence of these memories within a contemporary design.” Critical to this project was selection of the right builder. Serendipity played a part when Janet, while at her hair salon, unexpectedly encountered her childhood
friend Harlan Heshelow, now a respected builder and owner of Legacy Design Group in Seminole, whom she had not seen in many years. After visiting several homes he had built and many conversations, Janet and Iqbal decided that Heshelow brought not only skills and experience but, more importantly, a flexible willingness to try a different approach. “I wanted someone who would be willing to take an organic approach, who would continue to modify the design as the house was being built,” says Iqbal. “And we wanted to use local artisans and sub-contractors, especially during this economic downturn.” Heshelow adds, “Building a custom home is like being in a marriage…you’ve all got to feel good about each other. Janet and Iqbal are the best customers I’ve ever had. We’ve really had a lot of fun while creating this beautiful residence.”

the ground floor for storage, walls were opened up to create a sheltered conversation area, similar to a courtyard, which leads to the inviting infinity pool, hot tub, tanning slab and 60-foot swimming lane. The quiet water spillover repeats the design of the water feature at the home’s entry. Also on this level are Janet’s yoga/ meditation room, a family game room and an 800-bottle wine cellar. Leading to the living area above is an open staircase of powder-coated aluminum and hickory to match the flooring throughout the house. A three-story blue accent wall made of cast plaster and fiberglass resembles the actual waterfall that Iqbal had originally wanted there. During his travels, he found a wall that resembled a waterfall, discussed it with Heshelow, who tracked it down and had it installed. Graceful seagulls seem to float overhead, but actually there are two delightful chandeliers with white origami-like shades that move with air currents like mobile artwork. “No crystal,” said Janet. “We wanted subtle lighting, and I was thrilled when we found this at the Miami Design Center. It’s light and airy, functional and beautiful.” Spacious describes the second floor. No walls separate the dining area, kitchen and great room…even the covered lanai.
When the glass pocket doors—which slide into the walls—leading to the lanai are opened, the couple gets an uncluttered vista of sky, water and nature— especially the playful dolphins and highjumping mullet. “I just adore the view,” notes Janet, “and it’s so relaxing to just wander in and out. These doors are really an integral element of the house.” Heshelow solved the challenge of no walls by asking his clients to look to the ceiling. Each functional area—eating, cooking, watching TV—is identified by a recessed area of the ceiling and/ or by lighting fixtures, such as the one above the dining room table that repeats its crosshatch pattern and directs lights upward as well as down. “When thinking about this large area, Iqbal and I only considered the space at eye level. Harlan wanted everywhere you look to be interesting,” Janet points out. “He convinced us to put the fireplace to the open corner, rather than centered on the wall, so that we could also enjoy it while having dinner. I was nervous about centering the 60-inch flat-screen TV on the great room wall, but Harlan said, ‘Trust me.’” She’s glad she did. By embedding it among shelving and artwork, including two glass pieces created by their son Brian, the TV has been minimized. continued >

A small carbon footprint While living in California, Janet and Iqbal became interested in the “green” movement, which encourages homeowners to lessen their carbon footprint by using local materials and energy efficient appliances. Building a custom home now gave them the opportunity to put their beliefs into action. “Wherever possible, we have tried to conserve energy without sacrificing comfort or appearance,” says Janet. The home is constructed using insulated concrete forms; hot water is on demand; LED lighting is used throughout the house; water is filtered using a reverse osmosis process to re-ionize it; a triple HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) was installed; and all toilets are low flow dual flush. No VOC (volatile organic chemicals) paint or finishes were utilized. The minimal landscaping is xeriscaped with crushed shells rather than mulch, drip irrigation, and no herbicides or pesticides. Janet also carefully researched ener-
gy efficient appliances for her kitchen. Rather than selecting on the basis of name brand alone, she opted for a variety of manufacturers, each of which has a core competency for a particular function. In addition to the Energy Star-rated appliances, the kitchen includes two large sideby-side sinks, making handling roasting pans easier, and a pop-up drawer brings the mixer to counter height. European cabinetry, boasting custom charcoal and red-brown stains, has full lift doors with frosted glass panes. To set off the kitchen area, Heshelow again looked upward. He created a stunning custom-made textured drywall arch painted Flower Pot red that houses lighting for the two prep stations below. “Kitchens are my favorite room to design,” says Heshelow. “I wanted something bright and dramatic to contrast with the cool colors of the tiles and stainless steel appliances.” Janet loves his idea to create two 44x44continued >

building trends inch islands instead of one long one. “It really saves steps. Who wants to hike around an island just to get to the sink?” she laughs. The islands are topped with honed Vermont Danby marble and granite counters that have a leather finish that not only reduces glare but is easier to keep clean. Separating the kitchen from the great room is a one-of-a-kind bar that is truly a piece of art. By laminating three half-inch pieces of glass and then baking them in a kiln, artist Jeff Downing achieved the delicate effect of water in a slab that is actually quite sturdy. The rough-hewn bottom of the bar picks up elements of the stained glass windows, beautifully created by Janet, high on the facing kitchen wall. “When I look at this bar, I see the lines in the sand that water makes when the tide goes out,” says Iqbal. Iqbal’s office and the couple’s master bedroom suite are also on the main floor. Both have magnificent views of the Gulf, but, since the home faces west, electronically controlled Lutron blackout shades were installed for those few super-sunny hours in the afternoons. The master bath features the cooling effect of Listello gray/ green tiles while the spacious shower exhibits artistic tile decoration. A sky-lit 12x15-foot his-and-her walk-in closet is just down the hall. Their blended family of five adult children living around the U.S. meant that a spacious home with lots of bedrooms would be needed to encourage family gettogethers. The third floor, which can be closed off to save energy, offers its own courtyard, four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a conversation area. “This has been a wonderful experience, mostly because Harlan is both designer and builder. Having only one person to deal with made communication much easier,” Janet says. “Especially when that person is so enjoyable to work with.” Iqbal adds, “We love the house. It perfectly reflects who I am, who Janet is, where we’ve been and what we believe in.”

Homeowner’s vision leads to a well-thought-out kitchen By Abby Weingarten | Photos by Johan Roetz For years, Xenia Maye collected home décor magazines, created photo collages of plush kitchens, and said to herself, “One day.” F One day she’d have that fantasy space, where she could entertain guests on Christmas Eve and whip up Thanksgiving feasts. Now, the Tampa homeowner’s vision has materialized. “I’ve always dreamed of a wide open kitchen with all the nice features,” says Xenia, who lives with her husband, John Maye, and their four purebred Malteses. “I love to cook, so this really is like my dream kitchen.”

A timeless design The project was completed in November, after the Mayes purchased the 3,970-square-foot waterfront property in June last year and gutted the original kitchen. They enlisted the expertise of Jeff McNabb, a designer with Kitchen Creations, to help with the renovation. Old, white cabinets were demolished. An island, which was unusually far from the stove, was moved to a central location, and a bar was added in its place. “The design really fits our lifestyle. We have friends from our neighborhood over every other week,” Xenia says. “We’ll just put all the food on the island and they’ll gather around it.” With cabinetry by Custom Cupboards, countertops by Granite World, a tumbled travertine backsplash with mosaic glass and stone, a stone hearth, and stainless steel appliances, the kitchen is the apex of modern, with some old-world accents. “It’s a popular style because it’s timeless by nature,” McNabb says. “Xenia does a lot of entertaining and needed cabinets with a very durable finish, so we chose Custom Cupboards. The chocolate-colored island breaks up the traditional cherry and gives the kitchen a transitional look.” For the perimeter, McNabb and the Mayes chose cherry wood cabinets with a pecan stain and a midnight frost glaze. For the center island, they opted for beech wood with a German chocolate stain. A double stainless steel sink, soft close cabinet doors, a full china cabinet, a 42-inch mounted range hood, a pullout spice
rack, brushed nickel knobs, and three layers of crown molding are just a few of the eye-popping and utilitarian features. Gold ivory premium-filled travertine floors complement the beige walls, as well as the Lightning Gold granite tops around the kitchen’s perimeter and the Black Titanium granite on the island. To illuminate the room, a five-bulb Quoizel chandelier mingles with mini pendant bar lights.
The perfect escape Xenia, who cooks Filipino noodle dishes (her family’s tradition) and Italian pasta (her husband’s), makes regular use of every appliance. The convenient amenities also help accommodate the Mayes’ jam-packed, work-heavy days. Both wake up around 5:30 or 6 each morning, take the dogs (Teddy, Ayla, Kobe and Missy) for strolls around the block, and then prep for the grind. John is in the Air Force and employed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, while Xenia is a software engineer. Together, they own and operate 10 pieces of real estate worldwide. Beach condos in St. Petersburg and Hawaii, a house in Virginia, and another house in their Tampa neighborhood are among their holdings. When they’re not managing these parcels or midway into 40-plus-hour work weeks, they’re sneaking off to Bora Bora or taking 17-day Mediterranean cruises. continued >

Home time is precious. And the new kitchen gives them an aesthetic perk whenever they return from their offices or their international outings. They’ve moved around quite a bit—this being their third house in Tampa—and they’re finally settled in for good. “This is it. We’re not moving anymore. Now that I have my dream kitchen and we have the water view, we’re set,” Xenia says. “I always look forward to coming home now.”
An open invitation Every Thursday, the Mayes host a Catholic prayer group at their residence. They have block parties and swing open the doors. They invite relatives from Virginia and the Philippines. The kitchen has become a hub for social interaction, and the neighbors can’t stop ogling.
“We’re very happy with the way it turned out,” Xenia says. “Every time people come over, they say, ‘We just can’t get over how gorgeous your kitchen is.’” The dogs are huge fans, too. The Mayes even purchased four barstools for each one of the pups, and they congregate in the kitchen while mom prepares dinner. Xenia pulls recipe books from her massive library, and creates healthful meals while her cuties watch. Everything she needs, she says, is right there. “I remember when I had all these magazines and saved these pictures, and I said, ‘Someday, I’ll have this dream kitchen,’” she says. “I really feel that, if you follow your dream, you’ll achieve it.” ABOVE: A china cabinet was incorporated into the kitchen design.

Art the
Ages for
Homeowners create a sanctuary for their favorite things By Christina Kleiner | Photos by Johan Roetz
There are very few things more personal than your home. It is where you can let your guard down and be yourself. It should be a place where you feel the most comfortable. So, you could say it was a leap of faith when the owners of this home hired Robyn Story to decorate it for the 2010 holiday season without ever meeting her face-to-face. Story and the homeowners would communicate by email and telephone. “They explained that they wanted it to look as if they had been in the house forever,” she says. “They trusted us 100% and when they arrived at the house I was so happy to see they loved it as much as we loved decorating it.”

A fter
the holidays passed, the homeowners
hired Story to redecorate the 7,000-square-foot house, which serves as a second home. The owners spend most of their time on the East Coast and purchased this house as a place to spend their winters. “They also have family in the area, so this is a great place for them to get away,” Story says. | Story and her team decorated the home from top to bottom, using vintage pieces from the homeowners’ collection as well as antique and new pieces from her store, Robyn Story Designs. The following pages highlight some of the homeowners’, and Story’s, favorite rooms.
Master Bathroom During the summer months the homeowners live in Delaware, where they own a home, built in 1812, that sits on 300 acres along the Brandywine River. They purchased the painting “Morning on the Brandywine” from artist Allison Douglass. “The river is timeless and brings us great joy,” says the homeowner. “We chose to hang it above the bathtub because we wanted our bathroom to be a retreat—a place where serenity takes over.” In addition to the painting, the master bathroom is decorated in warm, neutral colors and also features a dog statue at the base of the bathtub. “They have three dogs who get the run of the house. This is in homage to them,” Story says.
Master Bedroom Story set out to create a master bedroom unlike any other. “I wanted them to have their own private kingdom, a place that has everything, yet is away from everything,” she says. The luxurious bedding and drapery were created from 27 different fabrics. An abundance of custom velvet pillows sit atop the bed. Each pillow went through a 12-step coloring and design process, so no two are alike. “We wanted the bed to take on an artistic tone, and these unique pillows completed the effect,” Story says. The sofa perched at the foot of the bed was a last minute addition. Story says the homeowners had selected two other couches to be considered for this location. “But at the last minute I thought about this old antique gold couch sitting in our store,” she adds. “It had already been reupholstered and it looked like it was made for the room. The best part about the piece is that it can never be recreated.”

Homeowners’ collection speaks to their personality The homeowners started collecting art 15 years ago. Since then, they’ve collected over 150 unique pieces from all over the world. “For us, art is an expression of our travels through life, our emotions, our highs, our lows,” they say. “We want guests to experience our journeys and gain an intimate glance into our lives.”

decorating trends 1. Waiting By Defa “The wistful look of this beauty in red captured our hearts. We chose this piece because it reminds us of the feeling of waiting for the one you love to appear. A joy that we have all felt in life. This is a favorite of many of our guests, especially the romantics.” 2. tibetan Warrior By anDré “The challenges of the people of Tibet captured our hearts years ago. With all the female energy in the room we wanted the balance to be centered by the power of this amazing piece; the proud warrior in the midst of pure beauty.” 3. Patience By Di Li feng The homeowners wanted their living room to be truly unique and elegant. They chose this location for one of their favorite artists, Di Li Feng. “In an interview Li Feng stated that, ‘True radiance comes from the bottom of your heart.’ Of our five Li Feng pieces this is our favorite.” 4. SnoWy bellS By ann SegaL “We commissioned this piece after seeing this location in Colorado. We placed it over the fireplace in the bedroom so that every day we awake and are present to the beauty that surrounds us.” 5. the Party By StaniSLav SiDOrOv “We love to entertain and when we first saw this wonderful Sidorov piece, we found ourselves wondering what they were talking about.” 6. Falling leaveS By ryan BenSOn “We are fascinated by Asian customs and etiquette. This piece represents grace and beauty.”

Dining Room The accessories seen throughout the home complete the regal theme Story set out to create. An oversized mirror above the buffet acts as the focal point in the formal dining room. The frame is comprised of 3,000 small, hand-cut mirror pieces, all individually placed. “This is a conversation starter and very dramatic. We accentuated the mirror with those wonderful wall sconces,” Story says. “The accessories in this home are amazing, yet they create a comfortable environment.” continued >

Power of Light Add a little personality to your home
Robyn Story says one of the easiest ways to spruce up a room is to add unique light fixtures to your decor. “I love lighting. It can give a room a completely different personality,” she says. “Don’t hesitate to place a funky table lamp on an end table or hang a pair of wall sconces in a powder room. You’ll be amazed by the dramatic change.” | In this home, Story believes the lighting is an extension of the owners’ love of art. “We were very creative with the lighting throughout the house,” she explains. “There was purpose behind each light and where it was placed.”
Living Room The formal living room is a true feast for the eyes. The space offers enchanting views of the front entry, which includes a barrel ceiling gilded in 23K gold leaf, created by artist Allison Douglass. The gold sheets were applied in a distressed technique and aged to an old-world patina. Douglass created the chandelier maedallion to complement the gold tones in the barrel ceiling as well as the deep reds of the ornate window drapery. The medallion is also gilded in gold leaf and then aged and encrusted with Swarovski crystals—all of which enhance the magnificent chandelier. Story used these embellishments as reference when she selected the accessories for the living room. “We incorporated an extraordinary world around that sofa,” she says. “The old vintage pieces and little artistic finds create a cozy room.”

“Yes, you can have a beautiful home built without the drama! Javic Homes’ main appeal is they build great homes, but they also communicate with you at every stage of the house planning/ house building process. Everyone at Javic was a real pleasure to work with and always just a phone call or email away. Not only were they very professional - returning calls and emails, answering all of our questions and addressing any concerns in a very timely manner - but they really took the time to make sure we understood the process of building a house and most importantly - they made it easy, enjoyable, and drama free!! That is quite an accomplishment! We were so pleased with Javic and how they built our home that we begged them to build our new office.” - Andrew Shein & Tien Tien
