HOUSTON CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL Community Service Guidelines 2011­12 Purpose: To train Christian leaders; To understand and value a servant’s heart as reflected in Jesus Christ; To develop a lifestyle of serving others and our community; To learn to appreciate diversity and other cultures; and To increase collegiate options by involvement in community service. Guidelines: 1.

We expect students to help immediate and extended family members when opportunities arise; therefore, community service credit is not given for service to family members. Students may offer service to the HCHS community at approved events but are limited to 5 hours PER YEAR. The HCHS community includes help with athletic or academic tournaments, meets or other in­house events held outside school hours. Community service projects not included on the List of Approved Opportunities must be pre­approved by the student’s Bible teacher. Students are expected to complete five community service hours per nine­week grading period. Partial credit will not be given for completing less than five hours. Failure to perform five hours of community service will result in a grade reduction of five points per quarter on the student’s average in Bible class for the nine­weeks. Students may elect to do individual community service or participate in any HCHS group or Community Service activities each nine­weeks. Students may only contribute money or donate items for 2 hours of credit each quarter Students may not do service at a “for­profit” business (a business other than charity or non­profit). A spring all­school service day may be held during the year; however, students are still required to earn 5 hours in addition to those days of service. Community Service Forms are due on Mondays: October 3, December 5, March 5 and May 7. Forms are available on the Community Service Board in the Bible hallway, on the school’s website and from all Bible teachers. Students who travel on school trips where community service is an announced and scheduled part of the trip may use the actual hours worked toward their service requirement for that particular quarter.
