I LOVE THE summertime in Houston — coming and going.

By “going,” I mean that I’ve been on the go a bit for CityBook, and it’s been wonderful.

For the second year in a row, we hit the road to produce our always anticipated “Sexy Issue” fashion shoot. With a cast of thousands — OK, it was just nine in the cast and crew, but it seemed like a lot! — we took over San Antonio’s spectacular, justifiably beloved La Cantera Resort & Spa for a couple days of swimwear, sunsets and seasonal swelter.

For some reason, the sexy shoots never get old. It’s amazing how, even after a few decades in this magazinemaking game, hanging out with gorgeous models in beautiful places is still fun. Ha! (I joke, but I’m usually amazed at how warm, professional and friendly models from these parts usually are. Texas produces some solid young folks, pretty inside and out. It pays to be raised well.)

’CAUSE A LITTLE bit of summer is what the whole year is all about. So sang John Mayer. There’s a spirit about summer that is undeniably magical. Whether you’re a kid in school waiting for that final bell to ring, or whether you’re a middle-aged woman like me — summer is met with much anticipation and has so much meaning and depth to offer. The season brings great nostalgia in every little activity. It’s a time of freedom and effervescence. It’s a time for barbeques and swimsuits, longer days and brighter sunshine, ripe fruits and gorgeous flowers. It’s when “rosé all day” is an acceptable pastime. I agree wholeheartedly with Henry James, who said it best: “Summer afternoon, summer

I was also privileged to visit the Rosewood Miramar Beach resort in Montecito, Calif., near Santa Barbara to report a travel piece for this edition. The resort, you might recall, was on the “second cover” of our last issue, too. Managing Director Rick Fidel has family here in Houston, and I met him the last time he was in H-Town. His setup out there is over-thetop fabulous. I appreciated the opportunity to visit, and I hope you like my story.

But, of course, the best part is always coming home to an active summer showcasing the best of Houston. CityBook had a great bash to inaugurate its new “Cool 100” feature at the Four Seasons Downtown, and you’ll see that covered in this issue, as well. Also, pool parties abound; Restaurant Weeks is here; the World Champion Astros are captivating us.

Call me crazy, but I’ve always loved spending the dog days of the hottest season in the world’s most fascinating city.

Lying still in the grass on a summer day is not considered idyl. It’s actually a respectable and wonderful activity — not so in any other season. Summertime dressing is easier and casual. Generally, people take their jobs a little less seriously as they slow down, take longer lunches, leave a little earlier from work, take off on Fridays and just largely enjoy their lives more. And that’s not to mention the vacations we are all fully committed to again.

Summertime is special, and I hope as you slow down your pace, you truly revel in all it has to offer so that your soul will be well fed.

THE JAZZ-FLECKED pop music of Grace Harrison may bring to mind Norah Jones or Sara Bareilles — but classically trained, Houston-based Harrison, 25, is doing her own thing. The followup to her 2017 debut album is in the works; the latest single to come out of her partnership with Grammywinning producer Luke Wooten dropped in June. “Sony Classic” is a mellow, groovy tune that showcases Harrison’s strong pipes while remaining both low-key and catchy. It was written during a trip to Paris, from the perspective of a seat at the celebrity-favorite sidewalk coffeehouse Café de Flore. “Even just existing in such an aesthetically pleasing setting,” says Harrison, “was enough to trigger the lyrics.”

Alief-reared, award-winning music producer LaNell “NELL” Grant first made a name for herself serving up beats with Grammy-nominated rapper Tobe Nwigwe. Now, she’s fully stepping into the spotlight with debut solo album, I Ain’t Gone Hold You. “I think I really showed the spectrum of NELL musically and sonically,” says the mom of three. “I think, for the first time, people are going to see how multifaceted I am.”

This isn’t the first time Grant has stepped out from behind her drum machine: She’s rapped on a handful of Nwigwe hits, and has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, NPR’s Tiny Desk, the BET Music Awards and even Joe Biden’s inauguration. But it’s her dual experience as an artist-producer that

sets the stage for her solo project.

“I just started writing and what came out reflected where I am at in life,” says Grant, who performs at Miller Outdoor’s Summer Mixtape Series on Aug. 18. “Sometimes seasons have you fighting for your life, and then you feel a fresh wind.”

Her album certainly reflects this roller coaster, with her signature sound of hard 808s and a passionate delivery woven into a collection of 17 tracks. The beats and flow switch up unannounced — but in a way that lets you know it’s intentional. The album’s “extreme duality,” Grant says, will take listeners on a journey from high-energy, top-of-your-workoutplaylist rap to soft love ballads, and even praise and worship.

In its first week on direct-toconsumer platform EVEN, I Ain’t Gone Hold You generated a streaming equivalent of 8.6 million streams. The album’s reception has been “surreal” for 34-yearold Grant, who considers herself a late bloomer. She laughs recalling a moment a decade ago when she was a high school English teacher spending all of her free time learning how to make beats. “I remember crying in my husband’s arms, and I was like, ‘My stuff sucks. It sounds like it’s supposed to be on an ice cream truck or video game.’”

Fast-forward a few grind-hard years, and Grant has produced songs featured in some of the world’s most popular video games (Madden, NBA2K) as well as in campaigns for Apple Music, Gatorade and Bose. Two songs she produced received NAACP Image Awards.

“What I’ve learned is that if you are being you, you will attract who you are supposed to attract,” says Grant, who pulls inspiration from her life experiences, relationships and Christian faith. “For me, I just want to use my gifts to uplift and encourage people, especially women, that whatever God has put on your heart to do — you can produce it.” 

Art-scene power player Nestor Topchy honors his friends in the creative class with a show of personal paintings at the Menil.

Painter, sculptor and performance artist Nestor Topchy is so integral to the history and social landscape of Houston’s art world that it’s impossible to imagine what the city might be like without him. From co-founding the sprawling art and performance compound Zocalo/TempIO in 1989 with Rick Lowe, to envisioning the potential of HIVE (Habitable Interdisciplinary Visionary Environment), an artist-run community in development near EaDo, Topchy has always realized his artistic and architectural dreams.

Having turned 60 in July, Topchy has no intention of resting on his laurels, and is preparing for the first museum presentation of his ongoing project, The Iconic Portrait Strand , a collection of more than 100 paintings

Born in New Jersey, Topchy came to Houston in 1985 to get his MFA at UH. He vividly recalls pulling up in front of Lawndale Annex, the temporary home to UH’s painting and sculpture departments, stepping out of his ’72 Mercury, and getting soaked by one of the city’s formidable rainstorms. Almost immediately, the sun came out and baked him dry. He graciously calls this baptism “interesting.”

He soon moved into Commerce Street Artists Warehouse, a 27,000-square-foot space transformed by its residents from a dank hellhole filled with human excrement and fiberglass residue into a lively creative space, with artist studios and a performance bay. Former Menil Collection director Walter

TAKING FLIGHT

Thanks to Pavan Grover, a Houston spinal surgeon who’s also a filmmaker, Alec Baldwin is back in the movies for the first time since the infamous tragedy on the New Mexico set of Rust.

Grover’s 97 Minutes, which had a theatrical run earlier this summer, will hit Hulu in September. The flick was written and produced by the doc and stars Baldwin as the NSA head trying to get a hijacked jet safely to the ground. Jonathan Rhys Meyer of The Tudors costars as an Interpol agent undercover with the terrorist group taking over the plane.

As criminal charges were under consideration for Baldwin in the 2021 accidental shooting death of a cinematographer, a dozen movie projects dumped him. But not Grover, who sees sticking by Baldwin — whom he met at the Sundance film fest when the two squabbled good-naturedly over a table at a sushi restaurant — as a point of pride. “The financial backers … wanted me to pull him out,” recalls Grover. “But I don’t believe in abandoning your friends at their lowest moment.” Baldwin was eventually cleared in the matter.

Although the 97 shoot was “chaotic,” with paparazzi breaking onto the London set to snap pics of Baldwin, Grover says it was a great experience, especially the embattled star. “It was therapeutic for him,” says Grover, who also acts in the movie, portraying the head hijacker. “After you’ve gone through a trauma, getting back into a regular routine is helpful.”

He hopes his movie — which had a $7 million budget

but looks like much more thanks to judicious use of pricey sets and CGI — will do for air travel what Jaws did for swimming in the sea: “make you terrified to fly.” The surgeon says that, during post-production, he hooked members of test audiences up to medical monitors to make sure their heart rate spiked at the appropriate times!

Grover has had a passion for medicine since he was a child in India, losing his brother at a young age and becoming inspired to help save lives. He also fell in love with film. “When I was six, I told my mom I wanted to be a Bollywood actor and dance around trees,” he laughs. His first movie experience was writing the screenplay for 2002’s Unspeakable , in which he also appeared as an actor opposite Dennis Hopper.

After the Covid-era hysteria, Houston’s housing market has leveled. The pace of sales has slowed over the past year, and prices are a bit down here and there. But there are pockets of explosive growth and, say experts, good indications that a healthy, balanced market is on the horizon. Read on for the latest stats, trends and lust-worthy listings. One of the most expensive homes to hit the market in all of Texas this year is a historic property in Shadyside. Originally constructed in 1926, the newly renovated 1 Longfellow Lane is now nearly 10,000 square feet, and is situated on just over two pristine acres smack in between Hermann Park and Rice. There’s beautifully landscaped grounds with a pool and tennis courts, and a three-car carriage house with apartments both above and below. Architectural details like arched windows and decorative ceilings have been painstakingly restored, while some rooms — like the primary bath and the colorful conservatory, at right — have been fully modernized.

Supply and Demand

AT FIRST GLANCE, home prices in River Oaks appear to remain rather flat: The average sales price of homes closed during the first five months of 2023 was just over $3 million, pretty much a carbon-copy of the stats from the first five months of 2022. But looking at the latest data might provide a clue as to where the neighborhood is heading next: The average price of homes sold in June 2023 was $3.2 million, up 15 percent from the June prior. Interestingly, the months inventory — how long it would take to sell all of the homes on the market if sales continued at the current pace, and no more were listed — has climbed to 4.8. The months inventory in all of Houston is just 3.1.

The story of H-Town’s rental market so far this year echoes that of the housing market: Apartment occupancy is stable, and prices have cooled oh-soslightly. For the month of June, 89.6 percent of Houston apartments were occupied — exactly the same percentage as the national average, and down from a peak of 91.7 percent in April 2022. Monthly rent has eked up by 1.2 percent over the last 12 months, according to MRI ApartmentData, to an average of $1,272 for a one-bedroom. This nominal increase is a far cry from the mega rent hikes deployed throughout 2021-2022, even though submarkets — such as unexpected hot spots Clear Lake and Friendswood — are seeing annualized growth of nearly 15 percent so far this year. ApartmentData also reports that more than 21,000 units are currently under construction, and another 31,000 units are in the proposal stage.

BY THE NUMBERS

Increase in the number of construction permits issued for multifamily buildings in Houston between January 2022 and January 2023. Permits for construction of single-family detached homes, however, were down by 40 percent over the same timeframe, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Stay a While

A 1912-BUILT COMPLEX, most recently the Farris Hotel in Eagle Lake, is for sale, priced at $1.6 mil. There are four buildings on the property, including the main hotel with 12 guest rooms, a bar and a dining hall. It’s been a restaurant, family residence, bed and breakfast — what sort of buyer will check in next?

Once upon a time, Montrose was considered rough around the edges, even gritty. But, the slew of tattoo parlors, funky thrift stores, gay bars and semi-edgy coffeeshops that remain in the well located district — roughly halfway between the Galleria and Downtown, and a stone’s throw from Rice — can’t hide the truth: Montrose is a stable, solid bet for buyers seeking a dependably appreciating neighborhood for the long haul.

After a season of less showy growth than other areas during the Covid years, the quirky queen of the inner-Loop — unabashedly eclectic with its mix of classic bungalows, townhomes and mod new builds — is back! The average sales price for the first five months of ’23, $853,000, is up nearly 13 percent over the same period last year. This occurs as other inner-Loopers like the Galleria area, Midtown and the Washington Corridor are flat.

And Montrose homes are, at the moment anyway, selling a week faster than last June, just 44 days on average.

Memorial’s Drive

AS MEMORIAL WINDS and weaves through West Houston, homes on idyllic cul-de-sacs and with big, rolling yards beckon buyers. During the pandemic, homes in Memorial were coveted for amenities like resort-style pools and plenty of room for guests. Prices rose rapidly, and inventory dwindled. And as the Covid-supercharged market cools off citywide, the Memorial Villages ’hood

reflects many of the same patterns: The average sales price so far this year is down around 6 percent, and homes are taking about 7 percent longer to sell, compared to the first part of 2022. But real estate experts say that a return to a balanced market, especially in the pricier parts of town, coupled with falling mortgage rates, will actually provide ongoing momentum.

BY THE NUMBERS

The growth in the median price of single-family homes over the past five years, according to research firm Moody Analytics. Over that same period, the median household income only grew by — brace yourself — 14 percent.

The demand for higher-end, suburban homes with access to great amenities and public schools is unlikely to waver any time soon. The Woodlands landed at No. 3 on this year’s list of Best Cities to Live in America, per Niche.com.

A HOUSTON REAL estate company has launched a new division that caters to some of the city’s highest-profile residents. Nan & Company’s new Sports and Entertainment group will provide concierge-style services to athletes and entertainers wishing to lease or sell their Houston properties.

One of its first listings is the Memorial home belonging to former Astros fan fave Yuli Gurriel, who now plays for the Miami Marlins. The nearly 4,000-squarefoot ranch-style property hit the market in June, listed at $1.7 million. The Gurriels heavily renovated the kitchen,

incorporating a nine-foot waterfall-edge island and sleek, hardware-less cabinets. The double-sided fireplace warms the mod space in more ways than one. And the Galleria-area residence of Garrison Matthews, a.k.a. Garry Bird, the Atlanta Hawks forward who used to play for the Rockets, was another of the Sports and Entertainment division’s first listings. It sold after seven days on the market, for around $1 mil. Between the rooftop plunge pool and the Tiger Woods Golf Simulator in the living room, we can think of a couple reasons why it sold so quickly.

Towering oaks

For years, the Heights has been one of the most popular hubs for young professionals, couples and families alike. Heights-adjacent neighborhoods like Timbergrove, Cottage Grove, Shepherd Park Plaza, Garden Oaks and Oak Forest have been steadily rising in popularity — and cost — over the past decade, too; in fact, Garden Oaks will soon become the latest area to hit the milestone of a $1 million average sales price. Over the first five months of 2023, homes here sold for an average of $996K, up by more than 23 percent year-over-year — the highest rate of growth in all of Houston. And while the number of transactions is down in Garden Oaks, as is the case in most H-Town neighborhoods so far this year, homes are selling just as quickly as they did in 2022.

‘Tangled’ Up

AMONG THE PRICEY neighborhoods in Houston, Tanglewood is easily one of the hottest markets. So far this year, homes here are selling 9 percent faster compared to the same timeframe in 2022 — and prices are way, way up. The average sales price in January through May of last year was $1.9 mil, whereas in 2023, that figure has jumped up to more than $2.3 mil. In most of the other ritzy enclaves — Memorial, West U — prices are flatter, and properties are taking longer to sell.

But the new “build-to-rent” trend caters to those who want a suburban lifestyle without a mortgage or maintenance responsibilities. the ’burbs, from Bridgeland to Iowa Colony.

‘Sinatra on the Stereo’

Inspired by Midcentury flair, a designer brings Palm Springs to Braeswood.

Unrealized potential can provide a powerful pull. Such was the case when interior designer Victoria Sheffield discovered a semi-neglected midcentury gem in Braeswood Place, with key architectural details intact. Situated on an expansive 11,500-square-foot lot, the A-line, asymmetrical home preserved its orange-tone brick, board-and-batten cedar siding accents, and even the original rolled glass in the singlepage picture windows.

Inside, however, the 1,900-square-foot home revealed a saga of awkward updates. “I saw so much potential to eventually expand,” says Sheffield. “The initial refurbish attracted my interest but highlighted the missed potential.

I was sold!”

When Sheffield purchased the home in 2010, she was a single mom of three preteens, with both practical and tactical considerations joining aesthetic and architectural design decisions. First up: uprading the primary bedroom to include a fab new closet. Sheffield, a native Houstonian whose 25-year career includes commercial and hospitality projects, then focused on the swimming pool and backyard. “The pool company could not understand why I would not sacrifice a red oak tree in order to place the pool central to

the view from the family room and kitchen,” she says. Instead, she chose to place it at the rear of the property, behind the garage. While this may have confused contractors, the layout made perfect mom-sense: “My oldest daughter hosted pool parties, and I could be discreetly present reading a book in my room” while doing a bit of eavesdropping via the sliding glass doors.

Then life brought another chapter: Sheffield married again, upping the combined number of kids to five, and inspiring another round of renovations between 2018 and 2020. “Previously, the kitchen was enclosed with an L-shaped countertop. It was essentially a dead end.” She wanted “uncluttered” countertops, dedicated spaces for glassware and appliances, and a flow to the adjacent family room.

Sheffield selected Italian laminate for the cabinets that were fabricated by a trusted carpenter, adding “hickory flooring and white oak accents for the floating shelves and hood vent,” says Sheffield. She “surprised” herself with the selection of natural granite stone for the countertop, backsplash, and island — and again when she chose a warm burgundy for an accent color.

Today, the entire house measures 2,570-squarefeet, with rich finishes, dramatic lighting and a retrochic mix of furniture and accessories. “I always take inspiration from the architecture of a home,” says Sheffield. “For me this included a bit of creative license, imagining a rainy Gulf Coast version of Palm Springs or a more humid David Hockney painting.

“I like to imagine Sinatra on the stereo and the clinking of martini glasses as the true north of my house, despite the fact that homework, early mornings, and teenagers were the norm.” 

A fabulously diverse and accomplished crowd of influencers, VIPs, culture vultures and society swells gathered on the pool deck of Four Seasons Hotel Houston to celebrate Houston CityBook’s first-ever “Cool 100” list

Sponsors and cohosts included The Post Oak Collection, which brought a twotoned orange and black Bentley to show off at valet as guests arrived, and Insólito Tequila, which provided spirits for the breezy summer evening’s featured Paloma cocktails. Château d’Esclans poured delicious rosés, including its Whispering Angel and The Beach.

Many in the bubbly crowd of about 200 were among the magazine’s “Cool 100” — the coolest people in Houston as arranged by the editors of CityBook in the publication’s late spring edition. DJ Kent Duplantis of LG Entertainment was a hit, spinning sexy laidback West Coast tunes as guests tippled and tasted bites from the hotel kitchen, like toasted brioche with whipped mascarpone and caviar, and tiny salads of watermelon, feta and mint.

‘Little’ Wonder

The Pappas family’s latest recipe is a prime location, a menu redeux — and plenty of caviar. By Robin Barr Sussman, Photos by Arturo Olmos

AA new concept in the home of its former iteration, Little Pappas Seafood House, on Shepherd, Little’s Oyster Bar is quickly becoming a summer hot spot for truly cool fare.

The name conjures up a tiny, casual oyster bar, right? So when diners walk in the door, they might be delightfully surprised by the retro Hollywood vibe: There’s a grand marble-topped bar, several dining areas including a temperature-modulated patio, and a luxe aesthetic.

Design director Evy Pappas has created a cool setting with crisp shades of white and navy blue inside and out, and gleaming brass lighting. There’s a charming galleystyle side room wrapped in windows with banquette and table seating. The glassed-in retractable roof patio tucked in the back has more spacious seating, and provides a

reprieve from the upbeat music and bustling bar area.

The cuisine, artfully created by chef Jason Ryczek, a California native and caviar expert, wows as well. Ryczek cut his chops in restaurants from San Diego to San Francisco. He cooked at the lauded sustainable seafood house Waterbar, and was the executive chef at award-winning Farallon. The chef also worked with the California Caviar Company for years.

So when it’s time to indulge in caviar, this is the place. Little’s signature roe is hand-selected sturgeon, which Ryczek personally harvested, and its accoutrements are downright addicting. A striking presentation is delivered to your table with puffed potato dumplings, radish butter, crème fraiche with onion jam, and chives. All caviar can be paired with a cocktail, Champagne

or vodka from a handy pairing guide. A dollop of everything — including perfectly clean-tasting sturgeon fresh from the sea — ends up on the potato dumplings (think elevated tater tots). So amazing that you could stop at that one dish. But don’t.

The Atlantic yellowfin tuna crudo is also a refreshing dish Houstonians could eat all summer long. Served in a chilled broth made with pickled watermelon rind and peppers, the diced fresh crudo is crowned with chopped peanuts. As for the mains, expect King salmon, Texas redfish — and, in true Pappas style, a Prime dry-aged New York strip, with a mushroom demi glaze and truffle butter.

Little? Hardly. 

HOUSTON’S BEST FOOD NEWS, IN SMALL BITES ...

Ben Berg has opened his 10th concept in Houston. Located next to his OG steakhouse on Washington, Benny Chows brings to mind Chinese restaurants in Berg’s native New York, from the menu to the decor. With Chinese-born exec chef Shirong Mei at the helm, Benny Chows serves dishes both familiar — General Tso’s chicken, dim sum, decadent Peking Duck — and uniquely Texan, a la the Smoked Brisket Egg Roll and the Holy Trinity Fried Rice, both starring Truth BBQ, another Wash Ave neighbor.

Named after founder Terrence Gallivan’s children, Eleanor and Ronan, Elro marks the beloved chef’s first return to the Houston dining scene since The Pass & Provisions shuttered more than four years ago. In addition to its namesake dishes — puffy, woodfired pizzas and refreshing crudo — the Midtown bungalow also serves salads, elevated snacks and hoagies on housemade bread.

Also just opened in Midtown: Josephine’s, in the space that previously housed Izakaya. Named after chef Lucas McKinney’s greatgrandmother, the restaurant serves traditional Gulf fare — po’boys, housemade biscuits, Southern pea salad — in a thoughtfully designed space by Nest Interiors.

The Heights is home to a whimsical new bar called Incanto, housed in a bungalow and pouring unique cocktails. Mixologist Alexis Mijares shaped the concept, which she says is designed to “mix high-quality drink offerings with a bit of a more relaxed and playful theme.” Expect drinks with fresh herbs, and shareable cocktails to be served in “festive vessels,” like 10-inch disco balls and flamingo bowls.

Hip, healthfood-savvy restaurant

Green Fork and Straw opens its newest Houston outpost in July, on Westheimer at Edloe. (This will replace its Shepherd location.) Like its other shops in the Heights and Tanglewood, this one boasts a juice bar and grab-and-go items like “Cajun Girl” chicken salad, and a Paleo Brussels sprouts bowl.

As Underbelly Hospitality closes GJ Tavern in Downtown, it also welcomes Pastore Italian Kitchen to the family. The seafood-forward menu spotlights the flavors of the ocean — the kind you might find in seaside Portofino or Sicily. A rotating seafood tower, scallop crudo, and oysters with prosecco granita are just a few cooling starters on the opening menu. Follow those with heaping portions of pasta!

BBelly dancers with flaming candelabras on their heads. A house band playing jazz mixes of pop songs. A DJ on weekend nights until 2am.

What’s this club? It’s Albi, the new Middle Eastern restaurant on West Gray, joining fellow newcomer Zanti and mainstays B19, La Griglia and Perry’s to create a sceney district.

Vegas-style Albi is outfitted with dramatic chandeliers, posh red banquettes, and a few neon lights for good measure. Sibling owners Nano and Jimy Fakhoury of Mary’z Mediterranean worked with architect Adel Sadek, who also did the interiors of similarly vibey Ciel in River Oaks.

Perhaps the best surprise at surprise-filled Albi, though, is the food. Mark Cox consulted on the menu for Executive Chef Christian Hernandez, formerly of March. The pair came up with Lebanese, Greek and Turkish

dishes that Nano believes will resonate in the “relaxed but buzzy corridor,” referring to the stretch of West Gray that connects Montrose and River Oaks.

Must-tries include the veal kefta, tender meatballs coated in lemony tarator sauce and served on a cinnamon stick, a la lollipops. And the feta dumplings are as indulgent and delicious as the name implies, served with a citrus labne.

As for the mains, don’t skip the lavender lamb rack served with zhoug, a bright, spicy cilantro sauce from Yemen.

Fun twists on classic cocktails are perfect for washing down all of this deliciousness — and also for sipping while taking in the scene. Try the gin and tonic with a dramatic showing of herbs and flowers on top. And for those there till 2am? The espresso martini with cinnamon vodka and Turkish coffee. 

In seaside Santa Barbara, a billionaire’s passion-project resort draws the rich and famous with its throwback luxury — and amazing food. By Jeff Gremillion

LLately, when you see Montecito, Calif., in the news, it’s often breathless dispatches about something its most famous residents — Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — have gotten themselves into. It’s enough to make you yearn for simpler days, when the dispatches from the lush and mountainous coastal community just south of Santa Barbara highlighted the comings and goings of more down-to-earth folks. You know, like Oprah, Ellen, Gwyneth, the occasional Baldwin and various and assorted pop stars.

Come to think of it, Montecito, which is only an hour and a half from Hollywood, has long been associated with the rich and famous. It’s known as the American Riviera, after all. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons billionaire developer-politician Rick Caruso — he nearly became the mayor of L.A. last year — partnered with Rosewood to create a posh resort here. It’s the kind of place to spot celebrities and then pretend to be way too cool to care.

Caruso’s five-star Rosewood Miramar Beach, situated between the verdant Santa Ynez Mountains and a fabled stretch of the Pacific coast, is a bit of a throwback to old California stateliness, paired with flourishes of breezy, sustainable luxury at every turn. Imagine a gleaming white mansion, complete with a grand foyer with a spiral staircase, a crystal chandelier, a black-and-white checkerboard floor, and original works of art by the likes of Norman Rockwell — and, a room or two over, upscale shopping in crisp little boutiques a la The Webster, Gwyneth’s Goop, and Brunello Cucinelli, whose chic neutrals seem tailormade for the situation.

Some of the guestrooms are in the main building, while others are bungalows set near one or the other of the palm-bedecked swimming pools. To reach the hotel’s other accommodations — the Beach House suites and studios, with their terraces ogling the sea and the sleek surfers who frequently appear there, and in the far distance, the Channel Islands — you must traverse a great lawn ringed in white roses and, at night, lanterns aglow. And you must also cross train tracks, as Amtrak’s silver Surfliner charges through several times a day.

Strolling the kid- and pet-friendly grounds here is an amenity unto itself, as rosemary bushes appear here and there, and red honeysuckle bushes crest over the fences lining the perimeter. And, of course, luxuriating on the sand here, on one of California’s most exclusive beaches, is, literally, an experience fit for movie stars and royalty. The

Sense spa is, of course, top notch. Wining and dining options abound. Breakfast in the brightly elegant Revere Room may include an impossibly high stack of fluffy pancakes. Perhaps a cocktail hour at seaside Mirarmar Beach Bar, where clever libations include the Rough Sea with Bulleit bourbon, pinot noir, maple syrup and orange bitters. A splendid dinner can be had at AMA Sushi, touting such memorable morsels as Japanese salmon with a garnish of salt-cured cherry blossoms; sake pairings available.

Caruso’s, however, is the star — the Michelin star, actually. The indoor-outdoor dining room has spectacular ocean views; the interior, with its lamplit lacquered walls of midnight blue, and accents of polished mahogany, are meant to recall a mega-yacht. The food celebrates coastal Cali fare with nods to Exec Chef Massimo Falsini’s Italian heritage. One intense pasta dish has gnocchetti, confit tomatoes, caviar, bits of edible gold and, laid on top, a decadent slab of Stephanie’s sea urchin, named for the fisherwoman who famously gathers the uni from local waters.

Off the resort grounds, there’s much more to take in. Locals — including Ellen, it’s said — love Bettina, a bright pizza joint with pink tables on the patio, and a wow of a salad of shredded snap peas with pancetta and shaved pecorino. Another can’t-miss is the French-country-style wonder of Stella Mare’s, where you nibble a juicy burger of ground duck with dark cherries and Dijonnaise in a rustic atrium. Sightseeing is easy. Wander down from the hilltop Old Mission Santa Barbara, through the vividly flowering residential streets of the town to the Courthouse’s observation tower with 360-degree views of the mountains and the sea. Then amble over to the hip little Longoria Wines tasting room on State Street for a sample of the region’s famous vines; on Tuesdays there’s a farmers market out front.

Another way to take in the whole scene is to book a ride with Spencer and Courtney MacRae, the cute couple that operates Sailing Yacht Kelpie. They’ve been known to invite local musicians on board to serenade you as they point out sea lions and sometimes a whale. Perhaps the best part of the tour, is when they show you where the celebrities live. “See that big house with the chimneys, just up the mountainside from your hotel?” asks Captain Spencer. “That’s where Oprah lives.”

And, again, you pretend to be cool. 

Hopps attended several Commerce Street exhibitions and happenings. “He would cross the room to talk to me,” says Topchy, who later painted Hopps, along with other contributors to the vibrancy of Houston’s art scene, including Wayne Gilbert and the late Forrest Prince, for The Iconic Portrait Strand .

Topchy began the portraits 15 years ago, painting on wooden panels with materials and techniques used in religious icons of the Ukrainian Eastern Orthodox Church (Topchy’s father was Ukranian). While Topchy describes his portraits as “iconic,” they should not be confused with icons displayed in the Menil’s Medieval and Byzantine art galleries. “An icon is from a vision and an archetype that is adhered to faithfully,” explains Topchy, who thinks of his artworks as a way to honor his friends and community. “It’s not a form of self-expression. It’s not even a portrait.”

Each portrait starts with a sitting, during which Topchy draws the subject. He also makes use of a camera lucida, a device that harkens back to optical projection devices used by the Old Masters. (“It’s a valuable shortcut for getting measurements and creating a composition,” says Topchy. “Especially if you want to spend time chatting and having tea with the sitter and don’t want their neck to get tired.”) Once complete, each portrait radiates with an otherworldly glow.

“The portraits tell me what they want to be,” says Topchy. “They’re not done to flatter. Each has its own life and makes demands and if you’re sensitive and open to that, you respond.” 

How are you an innovator in this field? As mentioned above, the foremost way that ORION is innovating in the industry is by focusing wholly on our clients, both the patients we transport and the hospitals and medical facilities with which we contract. We returned the focus of private EMS to where it should always be: on the people who trust us to transport them or their loved ones safely and competently every day.

Having been an entrepreneur in Houston for more than two decades, I have always looked to industries that should be committed to helping people but are not fully addressing the needs of these communities. When ORION EMS was founded in 2007, the private medical transport industry in our city was in disarray. The market was bloated with companies willing to cut any corner to make a profit. I saw people’s loved ones being negatively affected, and I decided to take action. I formed ORION because our city needed an ambulance company that was dedicated to providing the highest-quality patient care during every moment of transport for EVERY client.

Why did you choose to become a healthcare professional in Houston?

For more than 15 years, ORION EMS has continued to redefine the private ambulance industry in Houston by setting, and then exceeding, the benchmarks for success in staff training, patient care, and customer service.
