Greetings
LISA HOLTHOUSE Executive Publisher
I HAVEN’T gotten as much feedback on anything I’ve written recently as for “Journeys in the Heart,” my essay in the fall edition on the history of cardiovascular medicine in Houston, which referenced my recent heart procedure. I continue to get many good wishes and inquiries as to my health. My first reaction is, damn, a lot of people read this magazine! That sure does my heart good. Also, I’m touched, but not surprised, by the kindness and concern of Houstonians. The update is that the procedure, an “ablation” to correct an arrhythmia called atrial fibrillation, was a success. After having had episodes
I AM READY for this, my favorite season of the year — when the skeletons and ghouls are packed up, and some daylight is stripped away as the time falls back. This is the sign that the holidays are upon us, and my focus becomes joy. Serendipitously I was recently gifted The Book of Joy, a powerful book by Douglas Abrams, with the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. They speak in depth of the eight pillars that bring joy to one’s life, some of which I have already spent years working on. And I can resolutely say they work! Cultivating joy is so important during the holiday season. Focusing on gratitude, which is something I practice when I first open my eyes in the morning and when I end my day at night, has so many benefits, despite any circumstances that may hinder your perspective at the time. Gratitude stimulates the part of the brain involved in regulating stress and, along with simply smiling, can trigger positive emotions of joy. So my biggest holiday goal this year is to smile more, with the hopes of triggering joy in others. Generosity also brings joy. When you give, you get. As such, I don’t look at holiday gifts as
monthly or more, I’ve had no more a-fib since the procedure in July! That’s the good news. Because God wants to keep me on my toes, there’s now another problem with my heart that the cardiologist is watching. I may get another chance to model one of those sexy surgical gowns again in 2024! As I take things day by day, I’m focusing less on angst, and more on the continued kindness of my readers and neighbors — and on how lucky I am to have access to excellent care in the extraordinary Texas Medical Center. It’s a gift, especially at this blessed time of year. I wish you all peace, straight from a new-and-improved heart filled with gratitude and hope.
frivolous or missing the point of Christmas. I find pure joy giving a gift and seeing someone’s eyes light up. Charity giving of money or time is also a perfect example of generosity — do you not feel joy when you make a meaningful donation or when you serve a hot meal to a homeless person who thanks you from the depth of their heart? And let’s not forget that generosity of the spirit is just as important as money or time. Putting love, compassion and empathy out into the world is what I’m talking about. As the Archbishop says, “Be an oasis of peace” and spread joy around so that people want to be with you. Feel that joy, and in turn give it away to others. “That ripples out to all of those around us.” I wish you all a joy-ful holiday season, one filled with the eight pillars that I have been fervently studying: perspective, humility, humor, acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, compassion and generosity. And if you find some free time in front of a cozy fire — or outside lounging in the warm sun (it is Houston after all) — I recommend you read this life-enhancing book with an open heart. It might change your world in the most wonderful way. With gratitude…

espite its pain and pitfalls, there’s no denying that the pandemic inspired artists like never before. This season, one of the most ambitious public-art projects to emerge from the Covid years comes to a close. The Sankofa Project at Lawndale Art Center was curated by Houston DJ-artist-historian Tierney Malone, whose collaborative, community-centric endeavor offers a template for forward-thinking museums striving to contemporize their offerings and embrace inclusivity and diversity. On view through Dec. 16, Sankofa 23: The Sankofa Project Exhibition, 2020-2023 is a culminating exhibit of works by all the project’s participating artists. An exhibition catalog is forthcoming, as is an audio series of dialogue among Malone, Sankofa artists and guest scholars.

The Sankofa Project emerged in the fall of 2020 while the nation was reeling from a series of shocking killings of innocent Black Americans — Ahmaud Arbery in February, Breonna Taylor in March, George Floyd in May. Malone had been commissioned to create and install a mural inside Lawndale’s east-facing 16-by-25foot windows on Main Street when Stephanie Mitchell, then the director of Lawndale, asked if he would be interested in helping Lawndale facilitate a serious conversation around the issues of racial equality and social justice. Malone agreed, and they came up with a three-year timeline for the window displays. “If we don’t know how we got there,” says Malone, “we can’t even begin to address the problem.” He asked Rabéa Ballin, Sheila Pree Bright, Tay Butler, Robert Hodge, Ann Johnson, David McGee, jazz pianist Jason Moran contuined on page 72

n his 20s, Matt Mitchell lived in Europe, working as a writer and journalist. “I didn’t speak the language, but I felt like I spoke the food,” he says. Cuisine was a gateway to other cultures, and drove him to open Houston’s Traveler’s Table restaurant in Montrose. Born in D.C., Mitchell moved to Houston as a kid, when his dad got a job with Baylor College of Medicine. Later, he helped his father start a

medical-research company, but the food world lured him: He enrolled in culinary school, and was a CEO by day and a student by night. Just a couple years later, he opened his first restaurant with his wife, Thy, who focuses on the marketing, social media and administrative operations. “We stay in our lanes, and know each other’s strengths,” she says. Another of Thy’s strengths is style. Much like their globally inspired restaurant, Thy’s new online boutique Foreign Fare strives to nourish appetites for discovery with clothes that are comfortable and adaptable. Foreign Fare was the natural next step for Thy after working in retail and hospitality, her journey through motherhood, as well as her passion for seeing the world. “Over the last decade, we’ve been traveling all over the world researching food in different regions for our restaurants,” she explains. “In doing so, I realized there was no brand specifically designed to provide stylish yet functional clothing tailored for travelers.” Foreign Fare’s first collection, which draws from cultures in Morocco and Japan, is comprised of six hero silhouettes. A few staples to consider include the Jetsetter Jacket, a modernized blazer with a twist — lightweight, water-repellent, and equipped with a zip-off hood, front pocket, interior hidden pockets, and even a top pocket for your AirPods. There’s also a wrinkle-resistant jumpsuit and wrap dress. The entire collection is on display at a pop-up boutique in Montrose Collective through mid-January. Nearby, the couple is readying their second restaurant — global-street-food-inspired Traveler’s Cart, a casual café with delicacies eaten by hand or with chopsticks. It’ll be open late, with a great cocktail menu. “The counter-serve side of the restaurant industry is expanding, and we plan to open 4-5 locations around town,” says Matt. “Everything about our brand was born from a love of exploring exotic cultures and global flavors, and we want to share that.”

SOCIAL SEASON!

While it’s always a special night, this year’s Opening Night for Houston Grand Opera was unique. It for the first time featured a brand-new world-premiere production. Intelligence is a stirring opera based on the true story of an American slave woman who became a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. Sips Ahoy The S.S. Poet cocktail with velvet ‘falernum’ and, far right, the corn ‘ribs’ at Rumi’s

Holiday Spirit A festive feast — filled with warmth and spice — awaits at new Persian restaurant Rumi’s Kitchen. By Patrick Magee
The 13th-century poet Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī wrote, “Respond to every call that excites your spirit.” A new dining destination on Post Oak called Rumi’s Kitchen is named after the wise teacher, and indeed promises to excite all the senses. A sense of warmth is felt as soon as one enters the space, which is designed by The John Studio to feel as if you’re dining in a Persian home — a very fashionable Persian home, that is. The walls are exposed brick covered in plaster using a traditional Iranian technique and painted white, a combination that results in a rustic feel. The floors transition from hardwood in the entry to 62 | houstoncitybook.com
concrete in the main dining room, and the whole space is soaked in a warm glow from fixtures that are more art than lighting. Hanging from the tall ceilings, the lights are designed to look like a whirling dervish, another nod to Persian culture. The restaurant is anchored by a large, open kitchen, with a traditional turquoise-tile backdrop against which cooks are seen working with different types of unique stoves. One of the faces that can be seen in the kitchen is chef Ali Mesghali. He moved from Iran to Los Angeles as a young boy where he started his career working in Persian restaurants as a teen. Now he co-owns five locations of

LATEST DISH! HOUSTON’S BEST FOOD NEWS, IN SMALL BITES ... For a memorable dining experience during the holidays and beyond, consider Le Jardinier at MFAH. The vegetable-centric food is as beautiful and interesting as the art, found on the walls, ceiling and along the bar. Chef de Cuisine Felipe Botero lights up when explaining his limited-time Culinary Canvas dishes, which are currently inspired by the Masterpieces show (through Jan. 21), with works by Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Speakeasy-style “listening lounge” Off the Record has opened Downtown in the former Bovine & Barley space. The bar has a vintage record store up front, and a 41-foot wraparound bar, five booths and five sofas in the back. Craft cocktails are named for famous songs and artists, as in the
Rumi’s — three in Atlanta and one in D.C. About Houston, Mesghali says, “It’s long been on our radar for growth given its celebrated diversity and incredible food scene. It is not only home to a sizable international community, but also draws visitors from around the world for business and pleasure.” The menu is divided into “Taste” and “Feast,” the former portion featuring smaller dishes meant to be shared — think smokedsalmon-and-veggie-relishtopped hummus, or the melt-in-your-mouth lamb

CBD-infused Purple Haze. Expect pop-ups from local record stores and DJs. Bookable for holiday parties! Infused with the charm of a bustling Parisian café, Berg Hospitality’s new concept is now open in Autry Park on Buffalo Bayou. At Annabelle Brasserie, anticipate modern French cuisine — brunch, lunch and dinner — served in a very pretty space with views of the park. Kata Robata chef Manabu Horiuchi finally has a second restaurant: Katami is now open in the former Nino’s/Vincent’s space on West Dallas Street, serving the same impossibly fresh fish sourced from Chef Hori’s Japanese fishmongers, along with thoughtfully incorporated local produce — plus
Wagyu preparations and rare sake. Cuban café Buena Vista has bowed on Washington, with authentic yet modern dishes and original Spanish art, plus live music and cigar rollers celebrating the spirit of Cuba Thursday through Sunday nights. Delicacies include grilled octopus and ropa vieja. The owners of Hidden Omakase and Sushi by Hidden opened Norigami hand-roll restaurant in West U. Expect apps like truffle-topped Hamachi crudo, or “Steak and Eggs” served with caviar and toast. The signature handrolls can be ordered individually, or as a set. The Tokyoinspired space boasts colorful LED lights, lots of wood tones, and decorative shelves of origami cranes.

LATEST DISH! A Montrose institution is revamping its menu! Chef Ismet Saz just overhauled the food offerings at Boheme Café & Wine Bar, which now offers lunch on weekdays, too. Expect rich, creamy arancini, Turkish dumplings, a burger with truffle aioli, and addicting little pita pockets served with tapenade sauce. Plus, housemade syrups and freshsqueezed juices elevate seasonal cocktails.
Light It Up The bar at Rumi’s, above, and its Forbidden Fruit cocktail
James Beard-recognized pastry chef Ruben Ortega has an unexpected take on giftable holiday desserts: Backstreet Café’s scratchmade fruitcake with brandy-soaked fruit, toasted Texas pecans and a blend of warm spices like cinnamon, ginger and allspice. It’s dense, flavorful and available for shipping nationwide. Wash Ave mainstay Julep has a new seasonal food menu, created with the help of chefs Ryan Lachaine of Riel and Lyle Bento. Expect tasty takes on Oysters Rockefeller and lobster rolls.
sausage. There’s also eggplant dip three ways: smoked, fried or roasted. You really can’t miss. Meanwhile, the “Feasts” are different combinations of thoughtfully crafted meats or vegetables. Mesghali is particularly proud of his Wagyu Zabuton Kabob, which upgrades the traditional kabob to include Urfa chili spice, gilled shishito peppers, and red onion. There’s also kabobs of Chilean sea bass, duck or lamb. The cocktail menu includes more Persian twists: The Maydan is a cognac cocktail with Persian tea bitters, while the house gin and tonic includes dragoncello tarragon liqueur. As attractive as the food and drink are, it’s the pretty people who fill the scene-y space that bring to life a truly exciting spirit at Rumi’s.

Also on Washington: Pitmaster Leonard Botello of Truth BBQ has unveiled a fully stocked bar — spoiler alert: he loves a rare bourbon — and new bar-bites menu, touting
mouthwatering housemade chips with blue-cheese fondu, and a Philly cheesesteak made with Truth brisket. The restaurant scene in the River Oaks Shopping Center is heating up — or maybe we should say chilling out — with the addition of Dallas-based Hudson House, which registered a trademark on its “coldest martini” title. Down the block, still-new Zanti has rolled out weekend brunch with Italian-inspired dishes like braised-beef chipotle benedict and the Piemonte truffe bread — plus a side of live music! For those with extra-luxe cravings: caviar service, featuring Royal Ossetra and Imperial Ossetra. Nearby, MaKiin is now open in Hanover River Oaks, from Lukkaew Srasrisuwan, proprietor of Kin Dee in the Heights. Expect multi-layered dishes with distinctive flavors and nods to royal Thai family recipes, with influences from Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and China. The latest ATX import is chic go-to Clark’s Oyster Bar. Now open in a former auto shop on Montrose, the light, bright, indoor-outdoor seafood restaurant has a marble-topped oyster bar and private dining space.

Peninsular Paradise
An eco-minded beach community is turning a pristine swath of Costa Rican land into heaven on earth. By Evan W. Black
M
Master-planned communities aren’t new-news for Houstonians (hello, The Woodlands). And neither is Costa Rica, for that matter, as a direct flight to the Central American paradise known for surfing and ceviche is less than three hours. But Costa Elena, an eco-friendly, sustainably designed community located in the less-trafficked northwest corner of the country, combines all of the above — and does so perfectly. The secluded, 3,000-acre property where Costa Elena is situated is bordered by a UNESCO World Heritage site; the development’s backyard is an impressive 400,000 acres of untouched land known as the Guanacaste Conservation Area. Located just 45 miles north of Liberia, Costa Elena includes eight beaches, coastal plains and mountain tops alike, and dozens of sustainably built ocean-view villas. The Costa Elena Ocean Club includes an incredible infinity pool and a full bar with private cabana-style

lounges; future plans call for two more Beach Clubs, restaurants, shops, apartments and more. A boardwalk from the Ocean Club through the mangroves offers more than a pleasant nature walk: Since it was introduced in 2005, the 40-year master plan for Costa Elena has included conservation efforts for endangered species like jaguars and the yellow-necked parrot (both of which are now thriving in the region — keep your eyes peeled!). Pellas Development Group has also stressed the importance of recycling, utilizing solar power and stabilizing infrastructure, as well as hiring local and supporting local artisans. As for the villas, which are available for purchase (homesites from $350,000; turn-key finished homes from $2.95 million) or rent through Inspirato, they go beyond picture-perfect. Seemingly carved into the mountainside, the homes adhere to a contemporaryminimalist, nature-inspired aesthetic: The floors are a

lightly polished concrete that doesn’t feel industrial or cold, but rather comfortably modern, warmed by the hand-carved furniture of teak and fast-growing local wood. The ceiling looks like woven wheat, and sliding glass doors open all the way to make it seem like the floor plan seamlessly includes a fabulous private infinity pool. Inside, there are board games, Apple TVs, a fully stocked kitchen and laundry, indoor-outdoor showers, yoga mats — and an ocean view that will tempt the laziest of beach bums to do sun salutations on the daily. (Especially while a dedicated housekeeper-chef whips up a gourmet breakfast in your kitchen each morning.) While there are plenty of nature’s sights and sounds to soak up from the villa, there’s more to see and do nearby: Inspirato can book guests private boat rides, kite-surfing excursions, volcano tours, zip-lining and plenty of other Costa Rica-beloved activities. Back on-property, Costa Elena’s winding roads lead to several hidden beaches — best to ask a Costa Elena staffer for assistance in finding the best plot of sand for posting up that day. At any given moment, it appears that you’re surrounded on three sides by water. It seems impossible, but on this little sliver a paradise, a peninsula just feet away from Nicaragua, anything is possible.

and Lovie Olivia, all artists born in or with close ties to Houston, to participate. Taking its name from the Ghanaian word commonly translated as “one must acknowledge the past in order to move forward,” and symbolized by a bird with its head turned backward, The Sankofa Project began with the installation of Malone’s “The Little Girl in the Lion’s Den.” The “little girl” in this majestic work is Ruby Bridges, confronted by two roaring lions as she steps out of an alcove filled with biblical flames. (Malone and his wife are the proud parents of a six-year-old girl.) In turn, the other Sankofa artists offered a wide range of visual responses to the project. In Moran’s “Barline Hopkins Deathbed,” blue pigment sprinkled on crinkled paper forms the ghostly shape of a bed or the letter “H,” an allusion to legendary blues guitarist “Lightnin’” Hopkins. David McGee’s “Black Star,” an installation of 10 oil-on-burlap paintings of barely discernable religious symbols, Klan hoods and ship sails, is a poetic meditation on the middle passage. And photographer Sheila Pree Bright’s “Mothers March On” is a group portrait of nine mothers whose children have died at the hands of the police. Rose petals cover the ground beneath the feet of these women, representing the fallen. “These mothers continue to march on for their human rights,” says Bright, who was stunned when, while photographing the group, Eric Garner’s mother Gwen opened up her arms in a gesture that signaled both the loss of a child and perhaps the strength to keep moving forward. Lawndale’s current executive director Anna Walker says the commitment to sustaining a longterm, artist-centered project that aims to tell a fuller history of racial injustices in America’s past aligned with the museum’s mission. “We’ll continue to engage with these topics and these issues,” says Walker. “Our community of Houston is incredibly diverse and global, and that needs to be shown. And not just shown but supported.” Still, while curating the project, given the intensity of the subject matter, and the amount of time spent in quarantine unable to interact in person with his collaborators, Malone acknowledges he experienced moments of doubt as to whether the project would resonate. “There were times when I asked, ‘Why the hell am I doing this?’” says Malone. “But I believe that part of my work, while I’m here on this Earth, is to give these stories as much respect and reverence and an audience that I can.”
