e’re hoping residents across our great city consider preservation of old buildings in their New Year’s resolutions. The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance’s annual Good Brick awards spotlight local preservation, restoration, and improvement of Houston's architectural and cultural heritage. The organization presents several awards each year and we’ve featured two projects by local couples that dared to rehabilitate aging structures, in spite of the costs, logistical challenges and dedication required by these phenomenal projects. See this year’s full list of awards online at www.ghpa.org. Deborah Keyser and James Stafford converted downtown’s 1929, Joseph Finger-designed National Cash Register Building into an attractive law office with a sumptuous second-floor residence. Taryn Kinney and Michael Morrow, an architect couple, accepted the challenge of reviving a small, late-19th century cottage in the Old Sixth Ward Historic District. As they worked to build up this “tear-down,” Taryn and Micheal decided to let the walls and floorboards reveal the timeline of the home’s three-phase evolution. January is also the peak of what we Houstonians know as winter. tions, though far milder than those in northern locales, often keep outdoor types and gardening enthusiasts cooped up indoors. Make use of the pent up energy that cabin fever brings by decluttering and organizing a problem area (or two) in your home. Let our “Declutter for Good” article serve as your marching orders. As always, Joetta Moulden delivers another dramatic makeover that makes use of the homeowners’ existing pieces with great style in her Before & After column. The article also showcases homeowner Sheryl Evans’ talents as a concrete artist. Admire the dramatic results for yourself. Here’s to a spectacular new year for your house and home. Firethorne: where your home is more than just a house. A COMMUNITY WHERE THE VIBRANCY OF WEST HOUSTON MEETS THE SMALL-TOWN CHARM OF KATY/FULSHEAR 16

house& home | J a n u a r y 2 0 1 1 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com

Kindle the spirit of the outdoors. Firethorne is a 1,400-acre master-designed community in Katy/Fulshear that evokes the spirit of the Texas Hill Country . Anchored by majestic multi-trunked live oaks, large cedar trees, a palette of hardy Texas plants and native Texas limestone boulders and borders, the residential development blends with the best nature has to offer: 150 acres devoted to parks and recreational amenities, the scenic 12-acre Lake Firethorne, greenbelts, hike and bike trails, parks and playgrounds, discovery-rich wildlife observation area and a natural bird habitat. Firethorne was designed to combine the vibrancy of West Houston with the small-town charm of Katy/Fulshear. Strategically located on FM 1463 near the crossroads of the 1-10 West corridor, the Westpark Tollway and the Grand Parkway, its grand entrance beckons with a 17foot, intricately welded, cold-rolled steel sculpture — artist Mary Lou Stockton’s vision of a firethorne plant. This resilient, thorny evergreen, indigenous to the Texas prairie, is the namesake of Firethorne, where more than 1,000 homeowners reside to date. Model Parks I and II showcase Firethorne’s beautifully appointed homes by Perry Homes, David Weekley Homes, Plantation Homes, Highland Homes, Coventry Homes, and Partners In Building. The builder team members were selected based upon the highest standards for design, quality, customer satisfaction and reputation. Residents enjoy such family-oriented amenities as a resort-style swimming pool, fully-equipped Fitness Center with certified trainer Peggy Skaggs on call, tennis courts with organized tennis teams and classes, and the first regulation lacrosse fields built by a residential community in the Southern U.S., if not the country. The fields host Cinco Ranch Lacrosse, Taylor Lacrosse and Katy Cavaliers lacrosse club teams. In addition, Lake Firethorne and proximity to wide spaces of rural areas make the community the ideal venue for the 1,000-person Katy Triathlon at Firethorne, an annual charitable event sponsored by the

Rotary Club of Katy composed of a 16-mile bike race, a three-mile run and a 500-meter swim. Firethorne’s newest addition is its Competitive Swim Center, which is slated for spring 2011 completion. The Swim Center will house a regulation lap pool, clubhouse and community center, as well as a landscaped park and playground area, and further demonstrates the community’s ongoing commitment to residents’ individual and team sports and fitness. Exceeding all of its previous annual new home sales records in 2010, Firethorne recently broke ground on its next phase of development, Firethorne West. The westward expansion comprises 430 acres within the master-designed community. There will be 1,400 home sites in Firethorne West, in addition to 530 home sites on acreage under development across FM 1463 that will include three lakes with water features. The Firethorne West sections will feature 50- and 60-foot by 120- to 130-foot lots. The new home sites east of FM 1463 will be 70- and 80foot by 130-foot in size. Homes in the new sections should be up by the first quarter of 2011. The Katy/Fulshear community’s record-breaking home sales are attributed, in part, to the highly acclaimed schools in Katy Independent School District and Lamar C.I.S.D. (Consolidated Independent School District) that serve Firethorne and Firethorne West families, and continued economic growth in Katy/Fulshear. This business growth is fueled by the local expansion of three major Houston hospitals, plus continued employee relocations in West Houston in the energy industry. Firethorne kindles the spirit of the vibrancy of one of the fastest-growing, most desirable areas in Texas, with convenient access to the region's foremost mobility plan for exploring Houston. It is located 15 miles west of Houston’s Energy Corridor, (take I-10 West and exit Pin Oak to FM 1463.)

Creative concrete finishes complement an earthy color palette AFTER: The sofa and restyled ottomans were reupholstered and the rug and table were brought out of storage. The owner painted the canvas over the sofa and found the leather mirror at The Shade Tree.

BEFORE: Unfinished slab concrete floors, mantle and hearth and lack of paint color were stumping these homeowners. The dated, upholstered leg ottomans needed restyling, while new fabrics and paint needed to coordinate with the furniture in storage.

BY JOETTA MOULDEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

Sheryl and Rob Evans, regular readers of Houston House & Home, called me because they wanted to update their living room/dining room/kitchen at minimal cost. They liked the fact that I work with what clients have instead of starting over. “I didn’t want to make costly mistakes and didn’t want to toss out everything that we had. We wanted a timeless, but modern fresh look, with color and design choices that would last,” Sheryl explained. Rob jokingly calls Sheryl a hobbit, because Sheryl is so fond of her tree-trunk dining table and other unique wood pieces, such as a console table made of tropical wood made from hurricane-felled trees. Sheryl is a concrete expert (www.TheArtOfConcrete.com) and wanted to use as much concrete as possible in the interiors. Since I love concrete, it was just a matter of selecting colors that would coordinate with the contemporary, simple look the couple desired. “We like simple, straight lines with a touch of drama and like rather large shapes. You made me

believe I could do it and you were right,” Sheryl says. She found the paisley/leopard fabric called “I Am What I Am” and that fabric, plus my consultation, was the springboard for all the rest of the changes. For Sheryl, it was all about the concrete. I got her off of dead center so she could move forward. To save funds, Sheryl used Carl at Shinco Sales in Webster for her new and slightly damaged Frigidaire appliances and Arturo with Arvik Upholstery to restyle and reupholster her seating with fabrics from High Fashion Home. Sheryl painted the artwork and loves the way the large canvases coordinate with the ottoman fabric and the rest of the colors. She had just started making concrete words, like the “Always Always Always” above the bar. Once the concrete stains and fabrics were selected, the paint colors fell into place. The walls were painted Sherwin Williams Believable Buff (SW 6120) and the kitchen cabinets are a mix of Antique White (SW 6119) and Whole Wheat (SW 6121)—from the same Sherwin Williams color strip. Decorating wise, Sheryl found the lamp bases at Target and splurged on silk lampshades and the round leather mirror from The Shade Tree. Her dining room chandelier was found through the bargain site www.Overstock.com. My selection of the muddy fly ash color for the counters, mantle and bar surface was the toughest suggestion for Sheryl to go for. “I truly thought you had lost your mind. I mixed the fly ash with white and regular gray cement to get the present color. But you were right—the color looks great in the townhouse with all the other colors and fabrics. We absolutely love the way it turned out,” Sheryl explains.

before & after

BEFORE: In the uncompleted space, furniture was in storage, the chandelier had not been chosen and the kitchen appliances, backsplash tile and concrete surfaces had not been selected.

TRADE SECRETS •Think green—scoring and staining existing concrete floors instead of buying new flooring repurposes the slab and saves money, too. •Paint consistently gives the most bang for your buck.

AFTER: The ottomans were restyled and hidden wheels were added before they were upholstered. The steel-reinforced fly ash concrete countertops contrast handsomely with the coppery glass tile backsplash and scored black stained concrete colors and stainless appliances. The brick red chenille fabric was repeated on the chair seat cushions.

•Reinvent. Q & A with Mimi Tanner, author of Declutter Fast: How to get your home in order.

What is your advice for helping daunted homeowners take that first step towards tackling a clutter area in their home? Also, can you offers some words of motivation? Every effort you make counts when it comes to reducing clutter. It is an attainable goal, whether you take a fast or slow approach. The purpose of reducing clutter is to increase your peace of mind. So when you find your clutter-reducing efforts themselves to be causing you stress, take a step back. Focus on one small area at a time. Even five minutes a day can make a huge difference over time. Do you know what some of the more common items are that homeowners need to get rid of? Clothes? Books? Furniture? Electronics? A bathroom counter tray keeps everything tidy and allows for portability. Photo courtesy of Crate & Barrel.

24

Everyone is different, but many people, especially anyone with a family of four or more people, tend to have more clothing than they can use or store easily. Another temptation is to have more than one of a needed item. I

project think it's wise to have more than one of the most used items, such as scissors, staplers, hammers, and cleaning supplies, but when you have too many duplicates of items that you only might need to replace someday, then the cost to your space and your peace of mind in keeping and storing an item is much more than it would be to just buy a replacement when you need it. When it comes to clutter, you have to "count the cost" regularly. Is the space and the upkeep and the hassle of having this item really worth it? If not, you'll feel better when the item is no longer one of your many responsibilities!

project Beyond giving things away to friends, neighbors, charities, can you suggest local recycling and reuse resources to help avoid sending items to the landfill. Do you know of local Houston resources that accept hard-to-place secondhand goods or any lesser-known resources that are good to know about? Here is one resource I have heard about in Houston: The Helping Hands Charity, www.houstonhelpinghands.com. Salvador Andrade started The Helping Hands Charity as an independent Houston charity and thrift store dedicated to helping struggling families. The organization provides free assistance to more than 1,500 families per year in the Houston area. The center provides emergency clothing and household essentials free of charge to families with substantiated needs. Helping Hands is always accepting charitable donations from all over Houston. project Editors note: Also worth looking up are local groups such as The Furniture Bank, Dress for Success and Charities of Houston. Beyond having a tidier home, what are of the benefits of decluttering? The biggest benefit of decluttering is the change in how you feel on the inside. Decluttering brings a sense of relief, empowerment, peacefulness. All of this results in much more energy and confidence. Life is less of a burden and more of a pleasure. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, you feel in control. Once you have decluttered a room or your whole home, how do you keep it that way? What are some of your strategies for minimizing the influx of clutter and for maintaining a clutter free home?

Mount a plastic holder inside a cabinet door to keep them handy and tidy. Photo courtesy of Crate & Barrel. Right: Specialized racks help organize garden gear and other bulky items. Photo courtesy of Garage Tek.

Even if you haven't yet reached your decluttering goals, controlling the incoming clutter makes all the difference. Pay attention to what kinds of items you acquire and keep in your home that make up the themes of your personal clutter. It could be buying things at garage sales that you don't need but think you might need someday. It could be mountains of junk mail you haven't thrown out. It could be mostly clothing that you don't wear but are saving for yourself, someone else, or some kind of project. When you get an idea of your biggest weaknesses for adding items to your clutter load, then it becomes easier to stop adding on clutter. That is more than half of the battle. Downtown’s National Cash Register Building

Joseph Finger designed this rare Houston example of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, located three blocks off Main.

Preserve Old Sixth Ward Home Two couples take historic structures from old to bold with unique approaches to reviving architectural treasures. BY SANDRA COOK PHOTOS BY MELANIE MILLAR AND MICHAEL MORROW To many, the term “historic preservation” means restoring old buildings to their original form with painstaking accuracy and recreation of the way it was. Greater Houston Preservation Alliance’s annual Good Brick awards “recognize local contributions to the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of Houston's architectural and cultural heritage.” This month, we feature two Good Brick winners. Both of these renovation/restoration projects involved unique adventures in preservation that required creative solutions for modern living. Married attorneys Deborah Keyser and James Stafford converted downtown’s 1929 National Cash Register Building into an attractive office with second-floor residence. The architect couple of Taryn Kinney and Michael Morrow chose to preserve a small, late-19th

century cottage in the Historic Sixth Ward, seeking to let the walls and floorboards tell the story of the home’s three-phase evolution.

THE NATIONAL CASH REGISTER BUILDING After years of working downtown and living in Garden Oaks, Deborah Keyser and James Stafford began looking for a place to live downtown. “We looked at every loft downtown, but just weren’t happy with what we were seeing,” says Deborah Keyser. The couple liked the idea of owning the entire property — no building fees, no shared walls, no committees. With three dogs, they didn’t want to worry about annoying their neighbors. They also liked that it was less trendy, and perhaps more enduring that some of the loft and hi-rise projects. Deborah and James found hope in the form of an unassuming two-story building, built in the 1920s as a cash register factory with a showroom on the first floor. The property’s 25-xTHIS PAGE (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): Lone Star Elevator built and installed the handsome cage elevator, which travels between the apartment’s foyer and the kitchen. The Carrara marble countertops were reclaimed from downtown’s Post Office. Brick shaped ceramic tiles from Walker Zanger are new but appear old. Notice the antique door knob on the modern glass door and the custom metal detail along the top of the enclosure, which echoes the tile work. A narrow, copper trough sink exhibits Deborah's flair for unusual design details. Handmade tiles and a wall-mounted faucet also add visual appeal while saving space. OPPOSITE: Deborah and James had hoped that removing the old plaster from the walls would reveal lovely old brick, but they found a hodge-podge of cinder blocks and various unattractive brick, so they located reclaimed bricks, sliced them in half and applied them to the wall. The fireplace was added for cozy atmosphere year round.

36

ABOVE: The unique refrigerator (at right) was in purchased from Restart Srl in Florence, Italy. It is a modern Maytag fridge clad with antique-style metal and brass. This anchored the look for much of the kitchen, with metal cabinets and shelving created in a similar vein by Fe’ Accents. Additional cabinets were hand crafted in maple to look like old furniture. OPPOSITE: The dining table features a custom-ordered Belgian Stone top, set upon a French Bistro table base purchased at Marburger Farm Antique Show outside of Round Top. The buffet is an old Indian grain cart found through an importer in Dallas.

100’ footprint offered approximately 2,300 square feet on each floor. The first floor now functions as the office for their law practice, while the second floor serves as their residence. LESS COMMERCIAL, MORE COMFORTABLE Deborah had saved an article from the September 2006 issue of Houston House & Home on designer Andra White’s 1920s grocery store building that she converted into a charming home. After finishing most of the interior demo, Deborah teamed up with White, collaborating on the interior design for the next three years as the old factory was transformed. Deborah and James elected to serve as their own generally contractor because the project just wasn’t a good fit for any one com38

mercial or residential contractor. The couple was inspired by the sense of satisfaction that past renovation projects had yielded them. “It’s so nice to see things go from start to finish,” says Deborah. “It amazes me how many people want to buy something already done and even already decorated, rather than putting their own stamp on it and letting it evolve.” Deborah acknowledges she and James are old enough that they wanted a manageable situation for the future. They made the effort to establish the office and residence as individual entities. The office is wired and plumbed separately. There are separate entrances for each. “We go out one door, walk seven steps to go in the other door,” says Deborah. “We definitely feel like we’re either at the office or at the house.”

The bed in the master bedroom is a custom design made by Drew Hesson at Fe' Accents. The pig painting, Stella, was spotted during a trip to Santa Fe, NM, but not purchased at the time. James later procured the painting and presented it to Deborah for a birthday surprise.

The master bath features a window-style glass casement shower surround. The antique French-style tub is from Catchpole & Rye. The photograph behind the tub is by local photographer Katy Anderson.

The three-phase evolution of this Old Sixth Ward home began with a small Gulf Coast Cottage that now houses the entry, living area and home office. The owners collect old signs, especially hand-lettered metal signs. The pair of wooden chairs were found at an estate sale in Austin.

Vaulting the ceilings of the living room and kitchen went a long way toward unifying the entire house. The kitchen was opened up as much as possible with the help of skylights, broadening the connection to the living room and installing a wall of shelving to serve as a pantry.

OLD SIXTH WARD SURVIVOR Taryn Kinney and Michael Morrow got a tip from a friend that a very interesting house was available in the Historic Sixth Ward, east of downtown (see www.old6ward.org for history of the area). The Taryn and Michael, who met at Rice University’s School of Architecture, could tell it would be a challenging endeavor, but felt compelled to engage with this curious and crumbling house, which dates back to 1876, and to discover the story it had to tell. Their dedication to the project (among other things, of course) later spurred them to marry and start a family. Known as the Coulter-Sweeney house, the story begins in 1876, when a tiny Gulf Coast Cottage was constructed in what was then known as Fourth Ward North. Around the same time a similar, but slightly larger house was built on an

adjacent lot, and then in the 1890s, the two houses were moved and spliced together. Decades later, during the 1920s, a small addition was tacked on to incorporate a kitchen and dining room.

Masks from Taryn and Michael’s travels hang on the clapboard-covered walls. A vintage arc floor lamp provides a mod twist to the living room’s décor and represents just one of the dozens of eras the home has witnessed. BELOW: Taryn and Michael’s young daughter, Miller, is helping to write the current chapter of the historic home’s story.

The space that now functions as the hallway was originally the front porch of the second cottage that was joined with the first, smaller cottage (notice that the boards run side-to-side). The mismatched wall boards are actually pieces of the old board-and-batten exteriors of the two 1870s box-and-strip cottages.

45

LAYERS OF HISTORY Taryn and Michael purchased the house in 2005 and started working to make the home livable. They quickly realized the slow-moving pace of improving the look and function of the house, while seeking to avoid diluting the quirky historical narrative conveyed by its walls, floorboards, shiplap and every ounce of its early makeup and agglomeration. The cautious couple chose to install a metal roof, which reflects sunlight, and is much more energy efficient that wood or composition shingles. And by the way, there were four layers of composition shingles plus a wooden room to be removed. This relieved an enormous amount of stress from the aging structure. The roof work led to the decision to vault the ceilings in about two thirds of the house. This exposed floating roof joists with no secure attachment and other things that left Taryn and Michael wondering how the house was still standing. Michael recounts episode after episode of “As the Cottage Turns” during the investigative demolition stages. “We wanted to organize the various ages of the house,” says Taryn. They removed the modern In the master bedroom, multiple windows were uncovered and rebuilt to make the materials, such as gypsum board space more appealing. On the wall, a dilapidated Gulf sign reflects Michael’s fascinaand asphalt shingles, and took out tion with how things age. a few walls that didn’t make sense RIGHT: The reconfigured master bath now functions for two people, with ample floor for the 1,452-square-foot house. space, double sinks and new master closet. The hallway was originally the front porch of the second old house, as evidenced by the floor’s boards running side-to-side, as opposed to lengthwise. The porch-turned hallway used to dead-end, with the master bedroom entrance on the right wall, but Taryn and Michael learned from a neighbor that years ago the view from just inside the front door originally extended all the way to a window at the back of the house. The intrepid architect couple reworked the master bedroom, relocating the bath and closet, to restore that space-enhancing front-toback view. HOUSE AS A WHOLE “Everything that anyone had ever done to the house was about adding and we were more about taking away,” says Michael. Over a five-year period, they made efforts to keep and reuse the older materials and remove the modern add-ons. All the stuff that had been added over the years went into the dumpster: the out-of-place carport from the east side of the house, the interior gypsum board, and four layers of asphalt shingles. “We had to have a sense of humor,” says Michael. “We just couldn’t expect it to be perfect — the worst thing I did was by a laser level. We learned to appreciate the flaws and started to see it as a richness instead of being wrong.” 46

pet of the month

Hi, I’m Dizzy. I'm 2 1/2 years old. I'm a sweet, playful, friendly girl who is longing for a permanent, loving home. I had a home, but small children and other pets scare me, so my other owners brought me here so I could find a more suitable home. I'm a people cat who enjoys being at your side. I'm housetrained, microchipped and ready to head home to enjoy many holidays with you. I will do best in a home with older children and no other pets. So what do ya say....wanna be my friend? I hope to be curling up on your lap really soon. You can adopt me from the Houston SPCA today. The address is 900 Portway Drive and they are located in the Heights area. The web address is www.houstonspca.org ID# A10126545 HOUSTON SPCA 900 Portway Drive, Houston 77024, 713.869.SPCA (7722) Noon to 8 p.m. daily, www.houstonspca.org
