NEW CULINARY CANVAS SERIES
Feast for the eyes and palate at museum of fine arts houston By Robin Barr Sussman
The Bastion Collection restaurants, Le Jardinier and Cafe Leonelli, are rolling out the red carpet for the Culinary Canvas series, which spotlights the connection between food and art by bringing exhibitions to life in a culinary format. The ambitious program opened March 13, with special lunch and dinner offerings at Le Jardinier inspired by Virtual Realities: The Art of M.C. Escher from the Michael S. Sachs Collection on display in the museum through September 5. Throughout the year, both restaurants at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston will offer menu creations that coincide with the museum’s ever-changing exhibitions.
“We wanted to further explore the intersection of art and food, and truly bring the works of various renowned artists to life at our restaurants,” said chef Alain Verzeroli, Culinary Director of The Bastion Collection, in a statement. “With Houston being one of the most culturally-diverse cities, this concept will add another unique component to our offerings and heighten guests’ overall experience.” lejardinier-houston.com

with a view Wondrous wallpaper is having a moment at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams in Highland Village By Robin Barr Sussman If you haven’t visited the inspiring showroom at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, its first shop in Houston, you are missing out on magical solutions to home quandaries and inquiries like, “what do I do with this boring small space? or “do I need to paint the walls again to achieve a fresh look?” Enter Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, who has partnered with New York based textile design studio Eskayel to launch its first line of wallpaper. Not your mama’s or grandma’s wallpaper plastered all over an entire room – this is art in small segments to create a punch of color or energy on a wall or, perhaps, invigorate a tiny space like a powder room. For this collaboration, Eskayel created a collection of six patterns inspired by classic motifs and traditional ideals of Americana to celebrate the shared US-based manufacturing heritage of both companies (North Carolina & New York.) The patterns take inspiration from the South and the West, 1970s American modernism, classic pinstripes and more. A few looks to shop for include Topiary, a plant pattern to celebrate home and cultivation; Dogwood Dreams inspired by the South; Pen Stripe, which is reminiscent of a classic pinstripe suit but also slightly resembles stripes in whitewashed wood, and Mod Mural, which celebrates the 70s and modernism. The writing is on the wall – just go pick out the paper. Shown: Topiary

seeking a cool place to “meat up” or treat Dad for Father’s Day, these diverse new eateries have all the right stuff. Various steak cuts from Marmo include an 18 oz. Ribeye. Photo by Kirsten Gilliam
Story by Robin Barr Sussman MARMO Located in the new Montrose Collective, this sophisticated Italian chophouse comes from the Baltimore-based Atlas Restaurant Group, the team behind Houston’s Ouzo Bay and Loch Bar in the chic River Oaks District shopping mecca. Expect handmade pasta, charcuterie made in-house and hand-cut prime steaks, accompanied by a robust wine collection focused on Italian regions. Take a little trip to Italy – why not? 888 Westheimer Rd., Ste. 109, 832-626-3400 LORO ASIAN SMOKEHOUSE & BAR Come as you are for the all-day menu at this hopping Heights newcomer from two Austin-based James Beard winning chefs. While basking on the sunlit patio, start with a signature slushee and segue to the crave-worthy crispy smoked chicken sandwich stacked with slaw, smoked salmon deviled eggs, smoked brisket tostados, the Loro cheeseburger, or other delish options. Celebrate with wines and sake on tap, cocktails and beer, and anticipate a second location in Rice Village fall of 2023. 1001 W. 11th St., 713-930-2326
HAMSA Modern Middle Eastern Hamsa owned by Sof Hospitality, who also operates Doris Metropolian and Badolina Bakery, has bowed in the Rice Village. Expect an exotic culinary experience with a sophisticated vibe and dishes rich with vegetables, spices and one-of-a-kind flavor profiles including a variety of salatim dishes followed by small plates for sharing. Chef Yotam Dolev is dishing out a selection of hummuses, generous skewers, cauliflower couscous, Shakshuka and grilled branzino. Its six-seat chef’s table offers the ultimate experience called “Yalla Yalla,” a curation of top chef selections. The table offers a prime view of the brick oven baking fresh pita all day – also unique is its charcoal grill used exclusively to cook skewers. 5555 Morningside Dr., 281-612-3515 GJ TAVERN Downtown’s Georgia James Tavern recently tweaked its name and updated its menu under the direction of the new executive chef Tim Reading. and bone marrow vinaigrette, the Tavern burger sporting sautéed mushrooms and horseradish sauce, and roasted Gulf fish enlivened with basil pesto. Try the next level cocktails – Kick ‘Em flaunts exotic flavors of Scottish whiskey, ume plum, pistachio orgeat and walnut – served up in a smart, lounge-like setting. 737 Preston St., 281-846-6938 KENNY & ZIGGY’S In case you missed it, Kenny & Ziggy’s has moved to its new home! It’s bigger and better than ever with the same epic menu of Jewish deli treats. If you haven’t tried the mammoth house pastrami on rye, you are missing one of the most remarkable sandwiches in Houston. Bring the gang – it will take the whole family to polish off dessert. 1743 Post Oak Blvd., 713-871-8883 BLUDORN It’s no secret that Chef Aaron Bludorn’s Dry Aged Beef Burger is one of the juiciest in Houston. The restaurant’s expansive menu of French-inspired classics features one of the city’s most decadent hamburgers – think a dryaged beef patty with redneck cheddar and dijonnaise nestled between a benne seed bun and served with potato wedges. Rather cook at home? The Dry-Aged Burger kits ($65) come packaged with chef’s instructions and individually portioned ingredients including ground Angus beef patties, caramelized onions, house-made redneck cheddar, fresh frisée, scratch-made Dijonnaise, cornichons, and buns (serves four people). 807 Taft St., 713-999-0146 GJ Tavern Burger. THINK PINK Juicy, fresh, and light, rosé wine is the drink of summer. Revelation rosé by Goose Ridge, Washington State, is more than what meets the eye, just like the strong group of Washington women who have brought it to life. The delicate pink hue comes from a carefully assembled blend of syrah, grenache, pinot gris and chardonnay, grown in the new Goose Gap AVA, which was recently named Washington’s 19th American Viticultural Area. Supple and fragrant with hints of strawberry, watermelon, mineral, herb and orange rind, its brisk flavors lead to a lingering finish. Tote this gorgeous bottle along wherever you – it will be the hit of the party! About $18. –RBS

beach bound!
Story by Robin Barr Sussman Above: Cheers to a beach bonfire on Padre Island. Below:Ocean Drive offers parks, beaches and scenic views. Opposite Above: Seawall Sweets and Turtle releases all in one day. Opposite Below: Feast on Gulf seafood at Water Street Market.
Summer is calling us to the coast, so we’re packing up the car and the coolers for a quick road trip to Corpus Christi, a friendly and welcoming city with one of the largest ports in the U.S. Conveniently for Houstonians, Corpus is a 3.5-hour drive from the city, making for a feasible weekend getaway. Along the way, there are fun and family-friendly stops in Victoria or Rockport, Texas, and plenty of places to take a lunch or coffee break.
Day 1
HOUSTON TO VICTORIA After driving for two hours, you’ll be ready for a stop. Victoria, one of the oldest cities in Texas and the home of old oil and rice field fortunes, is right off the freeway. Besides the beautiful neighborhoods with historical landmarks, look into the home tours and driving tours if you want explore the story behind important sites. Ready for lunch? Map Fossoti’s Delicatessan, an Italian restaurant and deli that holds the honor of being the oldest deli in Texas, as well as one of the oldest restaurants in the United States. Dig into soups, salads, po’ boys or pita club sandwiches. If you have kids, the Texas Zoo, an attraction with native and exotic wildlife, plus a petting zoo and aviary, is a nice stroll if you need to stretch your legs. Just for You
The Weekend
CORPUS CHRISTI Although most travelers head to Corpus for the beach, the city itself has several unique cultural attractions that you won’t find anywhere else in the Lone Star State, like the historic USS Lexington (usslexington.com) and the Art Museum of South Texas (artmuseumofsouthtexas.org). That being said, you just can’t beat the remote coastal beauty of Padre Island National Seashore and the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (fws.gov/refuge/ aransas), or the proximity to 130-miles of some of the best beaches on the Gulf. With so many beaches, ranging from calm waters to the best surfing destinations, plenty of opportunities await with something for everyone. Check out this organized listing for all the beaches and beach park options.(visitcorpuschristi.com/beaches) Want a unique Corpus Christi experience? Wake up early, and make way to a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchling release at the Padre Island National Seashore (nps.gov/pais/index.htm) this summer. Every year, thousands of the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are nested and hatched in Corpus Christi. When the time comes, thousands of adorable hatchlings are released on the white beaches to make their way into the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness! Nature fans should also check out the Corpus Christi Bay Trail, the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve, and the South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center (stxbot.org), all of which offer a unique look at the coastal beauty of Corpus. Some of the most noteworthy local museums include the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the Texas Surf Museum, the Selena Museum. Other outdoor activities include fishing, sailing and watersports like paddle boarding and kayaking. When the time comes to eat, drink, shop – even sail – consider Harrison’s Landing (harrisonslanding.net). Located in the heart of the Corpus Christi marina, and within walking distance from the downtown hotels, it’s the only place in town that has a floating gift shop, and floating bar and dining areas, as well as a dog-friendly back patio. Water St.
Just for You Market (waterstmarketcc.com) is another compound to check out located in Downtown Corpus just blocks from the bay. Beyond its seafood, sushi and oyster bar anchors, it has expanded to an iconic live music venue and burger joint, the only surf museum in Texas, and other great local attractions. Anticipate a bevy of chef-driven restaurants all over the city – fresh seafood by the water, authentic food trucks, and some of the best Tex-Mex and Texas-style
barbecue in the area. Whether you’re in the mood to experience the first Whataburger that originated in Corpus Christi or an evening out in a Brazilian steakhouse, there’s an eatery designed to fit every budget and craving. Corpus also boasts a dynamic nightlife scene: Sip craft brews in a local microbrewery, try mixologist-made cocktails while listening to live music, or keep it real with refreshing frozen margaritas. Cheers to summer on the coast!
