t only takes a few sunny February days to induce an outbreak of yard work fever in these parts. With respectable amounts of rain falling across the Houston area for the past three months now, and the imminence of spring, gardeners can unbridle their enthusiasm once again. Our Landscape Issue is packed with ideas and advice to help achieve your landscape goals. As so many plants come out of hibernation, we spring into action for Operation Yard Beautiful. But before you buy flats of new plants, loads of sod and mountains of mulch, read up on the latest lists of hardy plants, shrubs and trees for our area. No doubt, the past year was one for the record books. The drought conditions, coupled with the harsh freezes of the two preceding winters have caused a shake-up of our go-to landscape choices. You’ll find valuable guidance in our landscaping feature. Two knowledgeable and savvy landscapers share their experience and insights on what to plant and how to ensure those plants will thrive. Trees provide beauty, shade and habitat. Quite literally, trees are a huge part of our residential landscapes, as well as the overall scenery of the entire Houston area. We feel

a collective ache for the masses of trees that have been lost in our parks, preserves and other green spaces. Recovering from the loss of trees requires considerable effort. We asked Trees for Houston’s Executive Director, Barry J. Ward, to share his expert advice on ensuring the welfare of trees. Read our Q & A piece with Mr. Ward to learn the essentials of tree care. Finally, just days before this issue went to press, Houston House & Home’s former editor Linda Barth died after a long battle with cancer. Linda served as editor of this magazine from 2002 until early 2010, when she became too ill to work. Her enthusiasm for life flowed into everyone around her. Her passing leaves a hole in our hearts the size of a 200-year-old Live Oak. Linda’s contagious passion for art, architecture, design, history, cooking and humor lives on in all of us here at the magazine and in the hearts of those who had the good fortune of knowing her. Sense of Style Simple switches and smart solutions modernize a dated kitchen without busting the budget BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

When Kristina and Cregg called me, their basic builder kitchen was large, but dated. They were stuck and did not know how to proceed. Mismatched appliances and metals, non-existent cabinet hardware or under cabinet lighting, busy wallpaper, clutter, laminate countertops and a traffic-blocking overhang at the end of the island were spoiling this kitchen’s potential. The protruding book bags were limiting the door from fully opening. TIP: When a table and chairs are inches away from barstools, it makes sense to increase traffic flow by eliminating an island overhang.

They removed the wallpaper with a www.HomeDepot.com Dif gel spray kit that contained scoring tools. They saved money by buying cut-to-order stock 2” blinds from Lowe’s. Most other materials came from big box stores. “We liked the idea of a ‘drop zone’ for the kids and to limit the repeated drywall damage from book bags, dog leashes, umbrellas and jackets, but the

16

house was just not built with that in mind,” Cregg explained. He additionally disliked the white, easily stained laminate countertops and Kristina hated the light cabinet stain and the dated wallpaper and how they clashed with the look of the adjoining living room. New hardware, paint and counters solved Kristina’s problem with the cabinet door. In just one meeting and a few emails back and forth, I came up with a plan for them. Since the couple did almost all the work themselves (with the exception of installing the granite counters from Home Depot), they saved thousands of dollars. They admit they were a bit worried that I might suggest replacing the tile floor. But since they are great readers of Houston House & Home they knew that I try to work with what the client has. “Your visit exceeded our expectations as you viewed the other rooms in the house and worked to get an overall view of our design preferences and work within our modest budget,” Kristina explained. The hardest thing for the couple was visualizing the overall color scheme

since they did not want to replace the cabinets or the floor, both of which contained a lot of red and brown. They chose textured Ralph Lauren River Rock paint in Chalk (RR53) purchased from Texas Paint Supply. They applied three coats to get the desired coverage. TIP: One way to cool down a too-red/orange tile floor and cabinets is with green walls and neutral countertops, which softens the intensity of the red tones.

AFTER: The couple removed the wallpaper themselves and painted walls, bought a new cook top and fridge, reused cabinets and floor tile, added hardware, granite countertops and removed the island overhang. BEFORE: Busy wallpaper, clutter, mismatched appliances and metals and laminate countertops with traffic-blocking island overhang were spoiling this kitchen’s potential.

BEFORE

Since they tend to over-research and ponder decisions, when I said, “just commit” to black appliances and brushed nickel hardware, they were suddenly unstuck from their dilemma. I suggested keeping the existing beige backsplash tile to avoid competing with the busy natural granite. “You provided us with a trusted baseline of comparison which helped us move forward instead of getting stuck with endless research,” Cregg explained. The couple then discovered how poorly the original backsplash tile was installed, so they tore out the old tile and replaced it with a similar tile from DalTile, but also installed a band of decorative rope trim tile to separate the additional running bond (brick) pattern below it to add interest to the desk area. TIP: When you update your kitchen, little things can suddenly look tired.

The couple repaired flaws in the wood stain, repainted A/C vents, installed new brushed nickel doorstops and a new thumb-turn bolt on the dining room door to keep the dog out of their formal living room.

TRADE SECRETS • Think green—recycling existing flooring and cabinets repurposes them, keeps them out of the landfill and saves thousands, too.

TIP: Remove, clean and spray-paint air conditioning vents to freshen them.

• To dress up existing builder-installed countertops, add granite, a new sink, and matching hardware to the existing cabinets.

After lowering the sink drain, they were inspired to repair the plumbing beneath the new deeper Kohler under-counter white sink, installing a separate trap for the new InSinkErator 3/4 horsepower garbage disposal. They also installed a Whirlpool reverse osmosis under-sink water filtration system from Lowe’s. All of these little changes add up to a much more functional and beautiful kitchen and the couple made no costly mistakes. “The painted walls and neutral granite are warm and inviting and are the perfect counterpoint to the DalTile Almond tile backsplash from Home Depot. The granite is a contrast to everything else, both browner and more substantial, which makes the whole kitchen feel sturdier and of better quality,” Kristina explained. “We just love our kitchen,” she added.

• Remove dated mini-blinds and add under cabinet lighting to totally change your kitchen. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to gut your kitchen, but to first rethink the items that are already paid for.

Landscape Renewal

A perennial garden with low stone wall and rustic gate features Angelonia and Pentas.

WEATHER EXTREMES FROM EXTENDED FREEZES TO THAT DASTARDLY DROUGHT HAVE REDEFINED LANDSCAPE STRATEGIES IN THE HOUSTON AREA S TO RY B Y S A N D R A C O O K • P H O TO S B Y H O M E & H A B I TAT

It seems Mother Nature has been trying to tell us something. Perhaps that message is “mother knows best.” For decades, many traditional lawns and landscapes in this area were designed to be watered frequently, and historically, rainfall averages have provided much of that irrigation. For decades we have consistently received enough rainfall to support a rainbow of tropical plants and acres of St. Augustine. According to the National Climatic Data Center, from 1970 to 2000 our average annual rainfall was almost 50 inches per year, with anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain each and every month. But 2011’s rainfall was less than half of what our landscapes are used to. Preliminary estimates reveal the total annual rainfall was around just 21 inches, with at least four months recording less than one inch of rain. BEYOND THE DROUGHT

With the worst summer on record burned into our memories, it’s almost difficult to recall the past two winters’ deep freezes. Consecutive days and nights below freezing also brought unfamiliar landscape catastrophes to our neighborhoods. Vincas and Angelonia add lush texture to a back porch. 22

Layered perennial plantings replace lawn with lush habitat. 23

ABOVE: River birch trees and native Virginia Sweetspire provide a natural sense of serenity. LEFT: A shrub and perennial garden provides resilient beauty.

So what’s a garden-loving Houstonian to do? How do homeowners prepare their yards and choose plants that can endure these weather extremes? “The last two years have been ungodly,” says Tim Turner of Windswept Landscape Studios. “Between the extended freezes and the brutal drought, the weather conditions have significantly changed what we can expect to survive.” “Our recent weather extremes have redefined what makes a plant Houston hardy,” says Janet Ireland, the longtime creative force behind Home & Habitat, a landscaping company that specializes in Houston hardy landscapes. “Even after determining what plants made it through the drought and the freezes (perhaps dying back, then returning), we still have a wide plant palette to work with.” Turner says he has reassessed the once-reliable list of perennials he has relied on for years. “Basically, we’ve been looking at what survived 2011’s exceptional drought,” says Turner. “Even some natives did not make it through, because of variables, such as surrounding shade, soil type and mulch coverage. We are now using a plant palette that can take extreme heat, little water and hard freezes.”

IMPORTANCE OF IRRIGATION

Ireland named her business Home & Habitat, because she was motivated to create landscapes that bring natural habitat to urban wildlife. “Our design team focuses more on the plants than the hardscape.” She also says clients are often looking to provide a diverse array of plants for wildlife habitat. Ireland points out that fruit trees, vegetables and herbs make wonderful additions to a residential landscape. “Those are especially great for families,” says Ireland. “It’s so great for kids to learn how their food grows and the role that nature plays.” Turner insists that designing a landscape that is appropriate to your home’s architecture and surrounding neighborhood is essential. “Even with our revised palette of plants, we can still create residential landscapes that are functional, aesthetic and regionally expressive down to the neighborhood,” says Turner.

Installing a sprinkler system or drip irrigation system ups the potential for a resilient landscape, but watering systems must be monitored to work efficiently and avoid waste. Ireland says making this investment greatly increases the variety of plant material than can thrive in your landscape. “If you have an existing sprinkler system and are reworking your beds, then you will need to modify the water supply to those beds, really analyzing what the plants need,” says Ireland. “The drought of 2011 was a water supply reality check,” warns Turner. “We are re-thinking sprinkler systems to minimize waste and runoff.” If your home has a roof, then your yard can benefit from a rain barrel or two. There are numerous attractive options and many barrels can be camouflaged. It’s a great option to work into your landscape, considering a rain barrel

Ireland stresses that soil is the foundation that plants grow from. “When you put organic matter, such as compost and organic fertilizer, into the soil it helps plants retain water,” says Ireland. “Investing in the soil can give plants a big advantage. It’s important to do this before planting, but you can add compost and mulch to existing trees and beds.” LANDSCAPER ’ S WISDOM

Winter is a great time to plant new beds and trees. “We are planting in fall and winter to help plants establish roots before the spring and summer heat and dry conditions set in,” says Turner. He also recommends more conservative pruning during drought conditions to avoid additional, unnecessary stress on trees and large shrubs. Ireland and her team use their expertise to steer clients towards successful choices. “Homeowners can rely on an experienced landscaper—who offers a warranty—to determine and properly implement a thriving landscape,” says Ireland. “The Internet is good for ideas, but the Internet can be very confusing, because the information you find there is not always related to the Houston climate.”

“It was a pleasure building our home with Matt Powers Custom Homes & Renovations; we worked closely with the whole team on every decision. I really trust their integrity and honesty. I appreciate the access and help they offered in all phases of our decision making. They accompanied me to the granite yards, brick yards, plumbing fixtures, etc. to answer questions I may have had as I made our selections. That was invaluable. We felt confident in our decision-making, knowing that their expertise would guide us in the right direction. Their standard of excellence has helped us create a beautiful home.” Kayle & Danny Miller

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF ADOPTING A PET? Here are the top 5 reasons why you should: 1. YOU'LL SAVE A LIFE Sadly, between 3 and 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the United States simply because too many people give up their pets and too few people adopt from shelters 2. YOU'LL GET A HEALTHY PET Animal shelters are brimming with happy, healthy animals just waiting for someone to take them home. Most shelters examine and give vaccinations to animals when they arrive, and many spay or neuter them before being adopted 3. YOU'LL SAVE MONEY Adopting a pet from an animal shelter is much less expensive than buying a pet at a pet store or through other sources 4. YOU'LL FEEL BETTER Pets have a way of putting a smile on your face and a spring in your step 5. YOU WILL SUPPORT LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTERS AND RESCUE GROUPS Instead of buying a dog at a pet store, visit with the animal shelters at The Home & Garden Show and find lots of healthy, wellsocialized puppies and adult dogs—just waiting for that special home!

FAMILY FUN WITH THE SAN ANTONIO CVB – Sea World, Fiesta Texas & The Buckhorn Museum! A sample of what San Antonio has to offer is coming to the Texas Home & Garden Show! DUFF GOLDMAN has been cooking since the age of four, when his mom caught him in the kitchen swinging around a meat cleaver while watching Chef Tell on TV. When Duff was in second grade, he came close to cutting off his pinkie while carving a pumpkin, and knew he was destined to work in the kitchen. Duff started working professionally when he was 14 at a bagel shop in a mall where he was almost fired for making the sandwiches too big. Ever since then, Duff’s been putting his own crazy spin on food! In March 2002, he quit his day job and opened Charm City Cakes. There, he was able to show off his creativity, which comes from a long line of artistic genes. The bakery became a household name on the hit Food Network show Ace of Cakes, which aired for 10 seasons. Duff is also a graffiti artist, metal sculptor and a musician who plays bass in the Elvis tribute band Danger Ace and the indie band Sand Ox. Purchase tickets now to one of Duff’s shows! The History of a New Home A 2008 home with family connections to a Heights block dating back more than 100 years STORY BY SANDRA COOK • PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAYMOND ALDERETE

A Floors throughout the first level are engineered walnut finished in a distressed chicory color. The series of botanical lithographs in the office were purchased at The Antiquarium, and the light fixture linen wingback chairs and ottoman are from Boxwood Interiors.

A tree-lined boulevard, which initially accommodated a streetcar line, anchors the Historic Houston Heights area, known for its turn-of-the-20th Century charm. Many of the original homes and architecture have survived more than a century of weather extremes and real estate trends, but various lots and blocks have been reinvented and redeveloped as opportunities arose. One of those opportunities came to be in 2008 when the homeowner’s godfather, a longtime Heights resident, sold the vacant lot adjacent to his own historic property to his godson. The lot has long history with the family and had been sold to H-E-B decades ago, when the nearby H-E-B store needed space to maneuver its large delivery trucks. After the H-E-B store

TOP OF PAGE: Many Craftsman touches were worked into the design of this recently built home. The full-front porch, complete with brick pedestals with tapered columns, evokes a Craftsman look, which is complemented by traditional plantings by Strong Landscaping. The home was featured on last December’s holiday home tour in the Heights. OPPOSITE PAGE: The overall look of the living room was created by Brett Duhon from Boxwood Interiors and features several of the homeowners’ collections. The stair wall displays close to 40 landscape paintings, while the mantle hosts an assortment of antique spools. The walls throughout the home are Pittsburgh Paint’s Santa Fe with Linen on the trim. 54

closed, the godfather purchased the property back from the grocery chain. This transaction opened the door for the godson, a landscaper, and his partner, a downtown professional, to purchase the lot and build their dream home. The couple worked with David Weekley Homes to develop the design and build a two-story, four-bedroom, Craftsman-inspired home. It was the builder’s first custom project in the Heights, a project of their build on your own lot program. “We worked with an architect to customize the house plan,” says one of the owners. “We wanted to incorporate historic Heights touches, such as the Craftsman-style columns with the brick base with tapered column on top. We also added the tin roof on the front porch and the window shutters to the original design.” The resulting two-story home is just over 3,000 square feet with four bedrooms and three and a half baths, plus a garage apartment. This allows plenty of room for the couples frequent guests. RIGHT: The formal dining room dazzles with its iron and rock crystal chandelier from Boxwood Interiors suspended from the coffered white pine ceiling. The table was found at Z Gallerie, and the chairs were recovered and refinished by Joaquin Renteria. The china hutch had belonged to one of the owners’ great grandparents and was redone by Renteria with a milk paint finish. The two paintings are by artist Katy Frost Neil of Galveston. BELOW: The homeowners’ collections include many antique toys and animal figures, as well as paintings by local artists.

The couple’s previous home had been a three-story townhome in Rice Military. Nowadays, they are glad to be in a traditional, two-story amidst the neighborly atmosphere of the Heights. “We love our neighbors,” says one of the homeowners. “We recently became godparents to the young daughter of one of our neighbors, and since we purchased this lot from my godfather who lives next door, to us, this is a very special block.” It’s clear the couple treasures family connections. Many furnishings in the home are family heirlooms, including several paintings, a rocking chair and a hope chest. The couple also enjoys buying furniture and art while on vacations and shipping it home. To pull together the look of their home, the owners worked with Brett Duhon of Boxwood Interiors to establish décor themes, but admit they have made adjustments to the look after settling in.

BELOW: The back courtyard features a French Quarter look with brick laid in a herringbone pattern, strings of lights overhead and French ironwork hung on the wall (a New Orleans find). Joaquin Renteria made the zinc-topped dining table; the chairs were sourced from Restoration Hardware and Thompson & Hanson.. RIGHT: The homeowners purchased the iron wall art and antique shutters during trips to New Orleans. The wicker furniture is from Smith & Hawken, while a glass-topped antique urn between the chairs functions as a side table.

Grand Central Kitchen The owners made the kitchen the center of home, as they love to entertain. The generous kitchen functions as the hub of the first floor. The large island handles plenty of food prep, and often serves as a buffet for family-style gatherings. The deep farmhouse sink handles piles of dishes, while the Cambria quartz countertops continue to shine after countless cleanups. The homeowners desired a balanced design for the muchused kitchen. “I like that your eye doesn’t stop in one place, but the space works as a whole,” says one of the owners. And while they have both a formal dining room and a comfortable breakfast area, the couple takes advantage of their outdoor dining room more than any other option. The couples’ two pugs, Samson and Buttercup, were considered with the choice of flooring on the first level. The floors are engineered walnut with a distressed and varied finish to allow for wear. The owners also chose to put sisal on stairs to make it easier for the dogs to get up and down the staircase.

BELOW: Craftsman Joaquin Renteria made the kitchen table with antique barn wood to go with the set of heirloom antique English pub chairs and 19th Century Swedish bench. The chandelier was a wedding gift from one of the homeowner’s grandfather to his grandmother. RIGHT: Cambria quartz countertops in Sussex (on island) and Hyde Park provide resilience and beauty. The roomy farmhouse sink and faucet, both by Kohler, handles heaps of dishes. The off-white subway tile backsplash gets an Italian accent from the decorative tile piece behind cooktop, imported from Florence, Italy. All appliances are GE Monogram.

A New Classic The homeowners selected neutral colors for the walls and finishes throughout the home. “I was raised with the idea that you decorate with art,” says one of the owners. The use of a timeless, classic foundation both inside and out allows the unique pieces in their collections to stand out, but not overwhelm. “We wanted our home to look decorated, but still feel homey and warm,” says one of the homeowners. “When our friends bring their kids over we don’t have to worry about anything getting broken.”

Tree Care

EXPERT ADVICE ON HOW TO SAVE, REMOVE AND CARE FOR TREES IN YOUR LANDSCAPE River Birch trees with native Virginia Sweetspire. Photo courtesy of Home & Habitat.

Mature trees can provide shade, habitat and an effortless magnificence to a home, neighborhood, even an entire city. Think of the splendid places you visited during travels and here in the Houston area: do you think of trees along great boulevards? Trees at parks and universities? Trees on the grounds of historic homes? Trees of many sizes and shapes grow quite easily all over Houston, that is, provided our area receives its typical amount of rainfall. The past year’s severe drought took a great toll on the tree population across Houston and Texas. How can homeowners determine when a tree is truly dead and what’s the best way to remove a tree? Can a tree look dead, but still come back in the spring or summer? We asked Barry J. Ward, Executive Director of Trees for Houston, these tree-related questions to help readers save existing trees and make smart choices for planting and caring for new trees. Here are his expert responses. 64

1. How can a homeowner or neighborhood volunteer know when a drought-damaged tree cannot be saved?

During the winter, use a small, sharp knife to peel away the outer-most layer of bark. If it is green underneath, then it is still alive. Also, small peripheral branches should be flexible. If they snap, they are dead. The problem with stressed trees is that trees, unlike humans, can be mostly or partially dead. The key is knowing when to give up the fight. 2. Can a tree that looks dead be revived? Are there signs to look for? Steps to take?

Yes, but generally speaking, trees in this condition tend to not look as good even if they do come back. If the majority of, or even a few, primary peripheral branches die, the tree may never regain the classic, species-specific look you want. The key is to water well during the hot, dry months; don’t over-water during the winter. Most of our local varieties can drop leaves once over the course of a summer due to stress

and make it back. A second die off will usually be fatal or cause irreversible harm. 3. If a tree cannot be saved, how should Houstonians go about removing dead trees? If hiring professionals, what are questions to ask and practices that should be insisted upon?

Only hire a licensed, bonded arborist. Tree removal can risky for both the worker and surrounding structure. Training in tree care, tree removal, tree climbing, etc., are all part of the licensure and insurance bonding process. This will not guarantee a great job on your tree, but at least you will be starting with a minimum level of competence. Ask yourself, “Will this company make good if they drop a tree through my roof? Will they have insurance if there is an accident with a chain saw or 5 tons of falling lumber? Accidents are uncommon, but they tend toward the serious/fatal end of the spectrum! 4. Do you know of good resources and options for repurposing trees or limbs debris? Are there local drop-offs for tree waste? Can homeowners have their tree waste converted into mulch?

For the scale of the individual homeowner, the best option is to simply ask the tree removal company to mulch it right at your home and leave it with you. 66

Root development is the primary concern in caring for your newly planted tree. It is essential to maintain the proper moisture level in the root zone to keep all roots alive and encourage growth. Improper watering will stunt the growth of a tree and eventually kill it. Note: The most common cause of plant loss in the Houston area is improper watering. Symptoms associated with inadequate watering are browning edges of the leaves, wilting and leaf drop. Unfortunately, these are also the symptoms displayed by a tree that is receiving too much water or insufficient oxygen in the root zone to allow the tree to respire and take up the water by the roots. It is best to water your newly planted tree daily, but in moderate amounts. Please refer to the watering table for your tree type and size. Also, keep a 2-inch layer of mulch around the root ball; DO NOT create a mound of mulch stacked up against the tree! The bare branches of Redbud trees sprout tiny purple/pink flowers in early spring, followed by heart-shaped leaves by early summer. Photograph by Mark Ross - Fotolia.com

project FERTILIZING

Fertilizing a newly planted container grown tree is best accomplished by top dressing with a time released fertilizer, applied in early spring. This should be done for the first three years after planting. 7. When and how can residents purchase trees from Trees for Houston? Are there other local sources for new trees that your recommend?

Trees can be obtained from TFH year round; anything we can’t provide we can generally help people find through reputable growers. CLASSES

From an updated kitchen to a home theater, from a fully functional 713-621-NARI garage to an outdoor patio, there is www.NARIhouston.com no job NARI professionals can’t do.
