ummertime is here (well, officially June 20), which goes hand-in-hand with family vacations. We’ve mapped out a fun roundup of ideas for your itineraries in our “Summer Escapes” special section, with options ranging from day trips to quaint, nearby towns to weekend stays in the Hill Country to extended getaways in Big Bend National Park — and everything in between. Get packing! We take you to Milan, too, for the annual Salone del Mobile, a feast in the latest of home furnishings and accessories designs. Check out the fabulously creative outdoor furniture and lighting innovations, many of which are available right here in Houston. Back in Texas, “Gardening” shows how you can create a Hill Countryinspired desert oasis right at home. Just follow The Arbor Gate’s basic tips of soil amendments as outlined by our gardening guru, Linda B. Gay. Speaking of the country, we also visit an elegant ranch home just outside of town, a retreat for three generations of family members all wanting a year-round getaway. And in town, a New Orleans-style manor by Whitestone Builders brings Southern charm to Garden Oaks. It’s a beauty! You’ll find another beauty of the mid-century kind right in Glenbrook Valley, saved and restored by a hardworking young couple, with the help of 2-year-old son Theodore, deterHOUSTON

mined to keep the house as true to the original 1956 “Parade of Home” showcase. You’ll be amazed at the results. Summer also equates to several holidays and special occasions, which in turn equates to sales (my train of thought). “Deal Hunter” finds discounts after Memorial Day and before the Fourth of July, as well as suggestions for great gifts for those deserving recipients: Dad, Grad and the Bride. And for Independence Day inspiration, “Editor’s Picks” is everything red, white and blue. Joey is our “Pet of the Month,” a loving guy who adores grown-ups. He’ll make someone’s life so much richer, just as my rescue buddy and pal, Rufus, does for me. I have to share, so pictured above is Ru-Ru or Lil’ Ru or the multiple other affectionate names I daily bestow upon him. Just looking at him makes me happy! feast for the designer at heart, a party for 340,000 visitors from all over the word gathered recently at Salone del Mobile 2017 to study the latest creations in furniture, materials and lighting. Among them we had a great group of architects, designers and showroom owners that made the trip from Houston to Milan, walked the fairgrounds and the whole town, picking the best parties from hundreds of events.

Arriving Monday, May 3, a day before the Salone opened, I went straight from the Malpensa Airport to la Rinascente department store located just across from the white marble Duomo di Milano for a first cappuccino. I saw that the terrace was ready for a show called “il gusto con vista.” Then I went to Via Orobia, where the golden Prada Foundation is, to discover in an old factory the new outdoor collection by Paola Lenti: Soft shapes, ultimate comfort

and vibrant colors were a true pleasure. Next day, I was glad to immerse myself again in the Maximiliano Fuksas fairgrounds architecture. I tried to focus on outdoor furniture and visited the always-striking Vondom booth, and then I found a marvelous light/table at the Vibia booth. Still a prototype, it should be available next year here. On Wednesday, I visited the Kartell Museum and had a funny encounter with the Philippe Starck gnomes in its garden. Thursday was all about architecture and the latest in the new Milan CityLife area with buildings by Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhass, Herzog and de Meuron and Daniel Libeskind. Design talks were given at the Feltrinelli Foundation, among many other places, by Mario Bellini, Antonio Citterio, Piero Lissoni, Alberto Alessi, Ingo Maurer, Marcel Wanders and so many other extraordinary people that I just could not believe to be so close to them. What a feast! More striking outdoor furniture at the always-impressive Vondom booth 20 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

PROJECT
Much of the furniture in the Hartleys’ home is vintage, but even the new pieces — like their sectional in the open living room — have a retro feel.
MID-CENTURY MODEST Couple Embraces Time-Capsule Living in Historic Glenbrook Valley
L
enora Hartley was just 10 years old when she acquired her first piece of vintage furniture, an enamel-topped kitchen table that belonged to her great-grandmother. This sparked a lifelong hobby: Throughout college in Oklahoma, during a stint in New York City and in the five years that she has lived in Houston, she has scoured antique stores, estate sales and family members’ garages for furniture, dishes and decor to add to her collection of home wares from a bygone era. Today, all of these pieces have found a fitting home in the three-bedroom Glenbrook Valley mid-century modest that she 24 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
and her husband, Andy, share with their 2-year-old son, Theodore, and a 12-year-old cat. Even before Lenora and Andy set eyes on the property, they resolved to keep the house as true to the original as possible. “The couple was looking for a wellpriced home with mid-century character that had not been ‘remuddled’ by flippers who strip the original features,” says realtor Robert Searcy, who worked with the Hartleys during their search. “Like many young buyers, they wanted a short commute with the character of an older home and established neighborhood.”

BEFORE 26 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Lenora and Andy found both in Glenbrook Valley, which they discovered by chance on a drive from William P. Hobby Airport to their apartment in The Galleria area. Glenbrook Valley, situated only eight miles southeast of downtown Houston, is the city’s closest-in post-World War II neighborhood and the nation’s largest designated postwar historic district. Built between 1953 and 1962, the planned community was designed by landscape architects Hare and Hare for developer Fred McManus with the intent to showcase state-ofthe-art architecture and home innovation. “Quality rather than quantity has been stressed in every aspect of this compact, well-designed home,” touts a listing in the Greater Houston Builder’s Association “Parade of Homes” brochure. (The property, designed by E. Kelly Gaffney and built by D.D. Hutchison, was featured on the prominent tour in 1956.) When the Hartleys purchased the home from its original owners in September 2015, the home still had good bones, but it had suffered several decades of well-intentioned upgrades and a few years of neglect. The couple returned the property to its original charm in just a year — with help from family and a few friends, a small budget

and an infant underfoot. Nights, weekends and naptimes were spent ripping up carpet and linoleum flooring, refinishing hardwoods, laying new kitchen tile, stripping cabinets and painting inside and out.
TIME CAPSULE HOME
BEFORE 28 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
The result is a living time capsule. Everything from the pink bathroom tiles to the green linen Formica kitchen countertops to the original retractable brass light fixture above the dining table looks much as they did when the home was built in the ’50s. The couple even repainted the exterior the original seafoam green, which Lenora uncovered by chipping through layers of paint on the doorframes. When the Hartleys couldn’t directly replace a finish or fixture, they found contemporary designs that echoed the styles of the time. A bathroom vanity light purchased from Amazon looks almost just like the original. After an Internet search for similar dining area wallpaper was unsuccessful, they settled on a retro textured wallpaper that they painted “Optimistic Orange.” Nostalgic touches throughout nod to the home’s past as well as the history of the young family that now inhabits it. A vintage

dumbbell found in the yard adds a touch of humor to the builtin brick planter that wraps around the front porch. Lenora and Andy’s bedroom set was built by her great-grandfather. Back issues of “Muscle Power” magazine and old Pam Am brochures, left behind by the original owner, hang in the home office and entry hall. Above the enamel-topped table that kickstarted Lenora’s collection is a framed photo of her mother and uncle dining at the very same table.
OUTSIDE When it came to the remodel, the biggest and least-expected challenge cropped up outside: The Hartleys discovered an unsalvageable concrete patio in their backyard, hidden under years of weeds. In the end, Andy busted up almost 14 tons of concrete, then tilled and leveled the yard, brought in topsoil and sod and finally built a wooden deck where the original patio stood. Today it’s the picture-perfect place to spend an afternoon while enjoying a Bomb Pop and watching the planes take off and land. With a lovingly restored home and warm, welcoming neighbors, it’s easy to pretend you have stepped back into a more modest time. Lenora and her son, Theodore, install the backyard deck. 30 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

And if you’re joining the many Houstonians who have second homes or are retiring in this Hill Country town surrounded by natural scenic beauty and the sparkling, spring-fed waters of the Guadalupe River, pack a second pair, too. It’s a Western-style destination with a history of cowboys and cattle drives. Southern hospitality. The downtown area also serves as a shopping and dining paradise, from Kaffie Frederick General Mercantile, the oldest general store in Louisiana; to Lasyone’s Meat Pie Kitchen, famous for its authentic “Soulful Louisiana Creole Flavors.” Horse-drawn carriage tours provide an excellent way to see downtown, while boat tours down the Cane River offer backyard views of the grand Oaklawn and Magnolia plantations — the latter a filming site for the movie, “Steel Magnolias.” Take the history-rich Cane River National Heritage Trail to see the plantations, missions, Civil War and historic fort sites and churches dating back 200-300 years — many of them with National Register of Historic Places designations. COUNTRY OASIS An Elegant Ranch Home Serves as a Family Retreat on the Range By Sandra Cook • Photography by Miro Dvorscak

oustonians relish their world-class culture, dynamic business environment and social scene within the big city, but, being Texans, wide-open spaces beckon. It may start with weekend jaunts to the Hill Country, but for some, a home in the country provides the ultimate escape. With 25 years’ experience, Houston designer Januari Works, RID, ASID, has worked with a broad spectrum of clients on projects large and small and has recently completed design projects for

country homes for several clients. For one of those homes, set on a secluded property on rolling terrain about an hour northwest of Houston, Works was referred through a previous client and builder Carl Cunningham, with whom she has collaborated on multiple custom homes. “The client had toured a previous project with the builder and eventually signed on with the builder and my company, Design Works as well,” says Works. “The builder and I worked out the look

of the trusses, the stonework and the transitions from space to space and just how to trim it out and keep the integrity of the home’s design.” Works was charged with creating the interior design and finishing touches for a ranch house to be used as a getaway for a large family, including three generations, each with their own ideas and opinions.
A FAMILY THAT COOKS While the family wanted the feel of a typical one-story ranch house, they sought degrees of separation that would allow privacy when the whole family stayed in the home, yet craved a central, communal hub for shared memories as a family. That central hub is, of course, a large kitchen/living/dining area that spans 60 feet

across and features vaulted ceilings that reach more than 18 feet high. Off the back this central area, a well-equipped outdoor kitchen allows for all of the various cooks to each have their own cooking spaces. Arriving at a somewhat formal ranch aesthetic, the color palate throughout the home is comprised of soft neutrals and especially soft earth tones, such as sage green and natural woods. In the kitchen, a special glazing on the cabinets and a custom copper vent hood add visual warmth to the space. “The result is a good blend for city folks who also enjoy being out in the country,” says Works. Lighting was carefully considered and offers a variety of settings, including various levels of task lighting and special settings for day and evening to deliver decorative accents and create ambiance as desired. Wrought iron and glass chandeliers yield an elegant glow

with Western flair. Craftsman Dale Dickenson of Burton used trees that were removed from the property during construction to shape exotic accent pieces, such as the mantle and door headers. Works designed custom leather sofas for comfy seating near the fireplace, and a pair of French chairs with ottomans provide pretty spots to stretch out.
The wood-paneled ceiling showcases the use of knotty alderwood. The cabinetry and millwork contractors collaborated to deliver the specialized shelving and wood trim throughout the wine cellar. “They all did a great job and were super to work with in achieving the final effect,” says Works.
A FAMILY AFFAIR A PLACE TO WIND DOWN According to Works, the grandfather had a very specific vision for his wine cellar, which was essentially a man cave that celebrates his love of wine. A staircase leads down to the underground cellar, which features walls in thin-cut brick from The Detering Company, which are also used in a herringbone pattern on the floor. Works tapped Wharton, Texas-based glass artist Ellen Abbot to create the custom grapevine etching on the glass door. Works made use of two small slabs of distinctive Breccia Vendome granite to top the token counter surfaces in the wine cellar. 50 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
With three married couples and two sets of young children, Works was tasked to design three different bedroom suites for grown-ups, plus quarters for kiddos. “They were very democratic and everyone got to vote on the choices, so decisions didn’t happen quickly,” explains Works. “There were a lot of opinions, and in the end, beauty prevailed, and that’s the whole point.” The result is an elegant, yet comfy ranch house for the whole family to enjoy.

SOUTHERN CHARM New Orleans-style Family Home Gracefully Blooms in Garden Oaks By Marsha Canright Photography by Ben Hill
W
hen Southern elegance meets contemporary Texas, the result is a handsome blend of wide porches, antique brick, ironwork and a modern light-filled
interior. Inspired by a New Orleans-style manor, but softer, this twostory family home has four bedrooms, three and a-half baths, more than 25 windows, 10-foot ceilings on both floors and white oak hardwood flooring throughout. It sits comfortably on curvy Gardenia Drive, a tree-lined lane in the Garden Oaks neighborhood, which borders the Heights. Built by David Gordon’s company, Whitestone Builders, the house is new but has the presence of a century-old abode. “Our vision is to build beautiful homes for our clients. That’s what we do,” says Gordon, owner of Whitestone Builders. Besides visual appeal outside and in, Gordon also emphasizes energy efficiency, sustainability and the use of high-quality materials throughout the home.
STEP INSIDE The interior of the house is open and airy with a ledge stone fireplace, a farm sink in the kitchen and shiplap throughout the house. The kitchen is about 19 feet wide with a double island, ample storage, multiple cabinets with inset cabinet doors and a backsplash of elongated white subway tile creating long, clean lines. It also features a stylish 48-inch range from Bertazzoni, an Italian appliance manufacturer. All bedrooms are on the second floor, along with the master suite. The master bathroom has floating vanity cabinets, marble countertops and a Randolf Morris double-ended freestyle tub with a contemporary double-post freestanding tub faucet. The master shower has a frameless glass surround, and the shower tile is Daltile’s new marble look-a-like tile called “Calacatta MA-87.” A utility room connects with the master closet.

Windows by Jeld-Wen bring natural light into the large kitchen with its two islands, an upscale Italian range, inset cabinet doors and oak hardwood floors. 57
A double-ended freestyle tub is the centerpiece for the luxurious master bath, complemented by decorative wood moulding and marble counter tops.
TEAMWORK On this project and others, architects Brickmoon Design enhance Whitestone’s creative power, although Gordon remains the hands-on curator. They have worked together for more than eight years. “This particular team is part of our secret sauce. They help put together beautiful design options and then we decide what looks best to us,” Gordon says. 58 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
“One of the things I love about the house is the oversized covered back porch,” Gordon continues. “It's perfect for entertaining. We had a Kentucky Derby party earlier this month, there were more than 60 people on that porch and there was still plenty of room to move around.” The house also has room for a pool and spa, and the 8,700square-foot lot offers plenty of space for more outdoor amenities and landscaping, he says.
59
The large, private master suite features shiplap walls and wide Jeld-Wen windows overlooking the treetops.
ENERGY CONSCIOUS Another goal of Whitestone is to build energy-efficient homes. “It’s the details that make the difference,” Gordon says. “For example, we put our plugs in the baseboards, not the walls, and there are no outlets in the backsplash, which we feel can hurt the look of the backsplash.” For heating and cooling, they install Lennox high-efficiency
60 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
AC systems with wireless thermostats in their homes. Gordon selected the Garden Oaks site with the help of his realtor, Deanna Zugheri, an expert in this area. Whitestone has spent more than a decade building luxury homes in the Heights. “It’s an up-and-coming neighborhood with very large lots, easy access to downtown and a great elementary school,” he says.
61
At top, a ledge stone fireplace completes a cozy, contemporary living area. Above, the elegant dining area with floor-to-ceiling Jeld-Wen windows is perfect for family dinners or entertaining.
WHITESTONE BUILDERS Gordon primarily builds custom homes for his clients, but also builds a few speculative homes each year that attract buyers who are looking in the $1.2 million market and up.
62 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
“Our philosophy at Whitestone is to find clients who appreciate the benefits afforded in our higher-end luxury homes because our pricing is at the higher end of the spectrum,” Gordon says. “Then we work diligently with those clients to exceed their wishes.”
63
The handsome home office with a shiplap wall and a decorative ceiling is a light and bright working space.
He adds: “We don’t necessarily want to build the same house over and over. We want to work with clients who are passionate about design and have an eye for the details that we put

GARDENING
Neobuxbaumia and Silver Agave make a beautiful combination.
Cordia boissieri, or Wild Texas Olive, produces white flowers in the spring.
ARID PLANTS IN THE BAYOU CITY
ARID PLANTS FEATURES
Create Your Own Desert Oasis with the Right Plants and Soil Preparation
T
Some characteristics of arid plants are: • Small leaves are less than 1 inch (less water loss). • Leaf color is gray, blue or light green to reflect sunlight and reduce hot temperatures on the leaf surface (cooling). • Waxy leaf surfaces keep plants from transpiring (moisture loss). • Hairy and spiny leaf surfaces slow down wind, thus reducing water loss. • Fleshy taproots allow the plant to penetrate the soil deeper to access pools of water.
Story and photoS by Linda b. Gay
he subject sounds like an oxymoron, and we know gardeners do love a challenge. The challenge with arid plants in our neck of the woods comes in manipulating the heavy, clay soil so these desert beauties can thrive in high humidity, along with periods of heavy rainfall. You know what everyone says about Houston weather: “Don’t like it, wait a minute and it will change!” An arid plant naturally occurs in regions where water is scarce both in the air and soil and the soil makeup is rock and sand, which holds no water when it rains because runoff is quick. Plants change their physical look and makeup to adapt to their environment, whether shady and wet to sunny and dry. 74 house& home | June 2017 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
SOIL AMENDMENTS So now you see why it is important to amend our heavy soils to grow arid plants successfully in our region. Clay soils are easily amended by using a Mantis tiller to pulverize the clay into small particles. Once you have pulverized the clay, you can amend with limestone (raises the soil pH) or use expanded shale (neutral in pH). You don’t want to dig out and remove the clay, but just blend the native soil 50-50 with expanded shale or crushed limestone, depending on plant choice and soil type. The shale or rock creates channels in the clay soil that allow water to flow through for rapid drainage, hosts air and gas exchanges and creates pathways for optimum root growth.

LOVE THAT LIMESTONE Here’s a short list of arid plants that benefit from adding limestone to the soil. You can see lovely examples of these at Peckerwood Garden, and all are available for purchase at The Arbor Gate. • Cordia boissieri or Wild Texas Olive, with white flowers in the spring and doesn’t produce olives • Sophora secundiflora or Texas Mountain Laurel, fragrant purple flowers that look like wisteria and smell like grape bubblegum • Yucca rostrata or Big Bend Tree Yucca, a beautiful architectural plant with white flowers in spring. This yucca could be the poster child for dry garden plantings! • Nolina texana or Beargrass, a clumping wiry plant that doesn’t exceed 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide and with interesting white blooms. Not a true grass, it is in the lily family. • Dasylirion texanum or Texas Sotol, a clumping native that grows 4 by 4 feet and produces flower stalks that grow 9 to 15 feet
LOVE THAT EXPANDED SHALE
Agave rostrata can thrive here with the right soil preparation.
Here’s another short list of arid plants, with these all thriving by adding shale to the soil. Again, visit Peckerwood Garden for an excellent viewing of these, and all are available for purchase at The Arbor Gate. Use the shale as mulch, too! • Aloes, tropical succulents best suited in a protected exposure, as they are winter bloomers • Sedums, several hardy varieties available for sun or shade • Graptopetalum paraguayense or Ghost Plant, Opal Plant, a true perennial succulent for Houston that forms a rosette • Hesperaloe parviflora or Red Yucca, a short clumping plant that produces red flowers in early summer. Hummingbirds flock to it. • Leucophyllum frutescens or Cenizo, Texas Sage is native to South Texas, so grow this one in full sun, not next to the house. Rain triggers the bloom period. • Scuttelaria suffrutescens or Skullcap is a great perennial for sunny, gravelly soils and flowers 10 months out of the year reaching 6-10 inches tall. As mentioned, one of the best arid plant collections in the Houston area is found at Peckerwood Garden in Hempstead. John Fairey has been collecting and planting Mexican plants since the early 1970s, and it is very interesting to see how the plants truly adapt because this property is subject to flooding. This botanical collection has more than 3,000 rare and unusual plants from the United States, Mexico and Asia displayed throughout the 20 acres. Time truly flies when one is immersed in learning about this exquisite plant collection, so thank you, Adam Black, director of horticulture, for sharing your time and knowledge with me. For more information, check out www.peckerwoodgarden.org…and happy gardening!
“Walking Palms” have unusual stilt roots that make them seem to “walk.”

PET OF THE MONTH
HI! MY NAME IS JOEY! I’m a 5-year-old large Terrier mix looking for a loving home. I’m a special dog who needs a special family. I do like some dogs, even though I prefer to have all the attention for myself. Kids are great, but adults are the greatest. Show me my walking leash and I’m ready to go! Car rides are fun, too. I’m house-trained and crate-trained and just a generally mellow guy. In fact, I would be a great companion for a retired couple who enjoys being outside. Please consider me, as I’ve been looking for my forever home for a month.
