hen we began envisioning the August 2012 issue, we knew we wanted to showcase a setting that would remind our readers–and ourselves–of the pleasures of spending time outdoors. Without a doubt, being outside in these parts during the August weather can lose its appeal to city dwellers. But think about how many times you’ve paused in a shady spot to enjoy a breeze and then become aware of a bird’s fastidious foraging technique or a squirrel’s animated antics. Moments such as these inspired our Lake & Country Living issue for this month. A strong connection to a tranquil, unspoiled haven about an hour west of the city moved a Houston couple to make their permanent home on a quiet country ranch. The couple selected award-winning Natalye Appel + Associates to design their home and its elegant, earth-friendly environs. Appel’s firm worked in partnership with interior designer Trina Jones Stanfield, Jeffrey Carbo Landscape Architects and Thomsen Company builders to design a farmhouse complex that sits on 140 acres in Colorado County. We’ve featured as many of Paul Hester’s gorgeous photos as possible to

give you a sense of how this interesting home interacts with the peaceful surroundings. This feature begins on page 32. We hope our article on window treatments helps you zero-in on decorative choices that showcase great views and provide privacy and energy efficiency when needed. Also in the vein of energy smarts, take a look at our article on managing the air in your attic for insights into the latest products and techniques. Antiques aficionados know that antiquing season kicks off again in September. We’ve already begun planning and preparing our next Antiquing issue that will once again feature our Round Top Guide, which made its successful debut this past spring. Look for a bigger and better guide with even more scoop on scoping out the shows in our September issue. Relax this month and rest up for Round Top! The Clear Lake Area Home & Garden Show at Space Center Houston makes its debut the weekend of September 8-9. The show features nearly 200 vendors, including Mattress Firm, Wonderful Windows and Built Green Custom Homes. Vendors from across the Houston area offer a one-stop-shop for everything relating to owning, buying, selling, updating, remodeling and decorating a home. Specialty speakers will be on hand to give tips on do-it-yourself home improvement projects, interior decorating and landscaping ideas. Each ticket includes an allday pass to Space Center Houston, and a portion of the ticket proceeds will send local area students on a paid-for field trip to Space Center Houston. Information: www.LHAevents.com. Looking ahead, the Houston Metropolitan Cooking Show comes to Reliant Center September 15-16. Highlights of the show include appearances by Paula Deen, Jacques Pepin and Giada De Laurentiis. The Regional Cooking Stage honors The James Beard Foundation with appearances by local chefs including Hugo Ortega, Kiran Verma, Jamie Zelko, Ronnie Killen, Michael Cordúa and Rebecca Masson. The show’s marketplace features hundreds of purveyors of specialty foods and entertainment necessities plus cooking demonstrations, tastings and hands-on workshops. The Cooking Show’s partnership with the Houston Chronicle will showcase the newspaper’s food and wine staff, such as James Beard Award-winning restaurant critic Alison Cook, food editor Greg Morago and wine columnist Dale Robertson. DECORATIVE ARTS Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) presents Glass Graphica, an exhibition that demonstrates the possibilities of glass to convey graphic punch. The show also serves as an unlikely Texas reunion for Moshe Bursuker and Miguel Unson—two artists who met as teacher and student in New York City more than five years ago. Bursuker, a longtime New Yorker, combines photography and glass in tiled collages that utilize the properties of glassblowing to convey high-contrast images culled from our surroundings. Fluidity of material and a daring combination of disparate techniques are at the heart of Miguel Unson’s flame-worked and kiln-cast glass wheels. The exhibition debuts with an artist talk and reception on the evening of Friday August 17, and is open during the center’s regular hours from August 18-October 14. Information: www.crafthouston.org

much that they asked me to help them bring their dated den into the 21st century at minimal cost. “When we purchased this house, the paneling in the den had not been refinished since the 1970s, so it needed updating,” she said. “The tile was awful,

Budget updates work wonders for what was a den of despair AFTER: (Above) A new microfiber sectional, chair, ottoman and storage coffee table from Chic Warehouse added comfort to the den. Ikea curtain panels were dressed with striped fabric by my fabrics workroom and new Bed Bath & Beyond blinds control light as needed. The end table was painted Sherwin Williams “Hi-Tech Black” SW 1021. An oil-rubbed bronze floor lamp adds light to the reading area. BEFORE: The sunken den looked dated and dark with the busy, tile flooring, dark paneling and aluminum windows with too-short curtains. The swagged chandelier did not work without a table under it.

AFTER: (Above) Because it was solid wood and already paid for, the owners chose to follow my suggestions and have their refinisher cut down, refinish and restyle the cabinet. with wide, dark grout lines and its busyness clashed with the fireplace brick,” Melissa said. “Your suggestion to use wall-to-wall, neutral flat carpeting was great because it warms the room and the carpet pad covered up the uneven tile surface and eliminated demolition,” she added. TIP: If finances are tight, use wall-to-wall carpet to cover up unsightly flooring. To update the paneling and beams, I suggested they paint the paneling, ceiling, desk and beams. She said that having professional help with the plan and color choices was invaluable. “I think your color recommendations were much more subtle and longer lasting than what Alex and I would have selected on our own.” she said. “I thought I wanted the beams to be dark and rustic,” Melissa explained, “The reality was that with 8-foot ceilings, we needed the lighter wall color (Sherwin Williams “Always Almond” satin enamel SW 1149) and trim color (Sherwin Williams “Off White” SW 1005) to keep the room looking open,” she said. The ceilings throughout are painted Sherwin Williams “Linen Cloth” (SW 1150) in flat latex. “You also suggested painting the fireplace brick the wall color, but it was that was just too permanent—I knew we couldn’t undo it,” she explained. TIP: Paint consistently gives you the most bang for your buck. Melissa found woven Roman blinds from Bed Bath & Beyond, which hid most of the aluminum window frames. “I loved the striped fabric from Calico Corners and wanted to make curtains out of it. However, it is very bold and expensive and you convinced me that a touch would

AFTER: (Above) Removing the 70sstyle doors and painting the cabinets Sherwin Williams “Off White” SW 1005 and adding new hardware updated them. The paneled walls were painted Sherwin Williams “Always Almond” satin enamel SW 1149 and the beams and ceiling were painted Sherwin Williams “Linen Cloth” (SW 1150). BEFORE: The unfashionable tile, cabinet doors, dark paneling and beams added years to this desk area.

TRADE SECRETS • HIRE A DECORATOR to look objectively at your spaces and make suggestions that will help you redecorate on your budget. • REMOVE DOORS – If you cannot replace them, do the work for the buyer by removing dated desk cabinet doors and refinish your existing beams and paneling. Paint consistently gives the most bang for the buck. We all sell eventually! • SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is to first rethink what’s already paid for.

do,” she said. So my workroom (a company I use for drapery and upholstery work) added a wide striped fabric border to store-bought Ikea grommet-top curtain panels and matching throw pillows, which really tied it all together. The workroom also added rope braid to the existing sofa pillows—an inexpensive way to dress them up. TIP: One way to dress up store-bought curtain panels and sofa pillows inexpensively is to add trim to them. I suggested a sectional for the room. We had talked about reupholstering the existing chairs, but since the style of the new furniture was taller and had straighter lines, Melissa decided to go with this sectional, chair and ottoman/storage table from Chic Warehouse (one of my budget store recommendations). “Alex has really enjoyed the larger TV and viewing it from the new sectional and his chair,” Melissa explained. She added that it is very comfortable for large gatherings and for the kids to recline on it for viewing the TV. And they love the new coffee table. “What we have is a storage table that doubles as an ottoman since the top two pieces can be flipped to be either a tray or a cushion top. The shelf below holds magazines and throws,” she added. What is the favorite change among friends? “The painted paneling and repurposed TV console,” Melissa quickly responded. “People don’t believe that is the old entertainment center. The color is beautifully darker and rich and completely different than the oak finish. We love how the paint has brightened the area and is so crisp and clean,” Melissa concluded. ta@shelterstyle.com or call 713.461.2063. HARMONY AN ENSEMBLE OF DESIGN VOICES INTERPRETS COUNTRY LIVING FOR THIS CENTURY 33

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: An inviting screened porch with a large fireplace is adjacent to master bedroom. Interior Designer Trina Jones Stanfield custom designed the chair and sleeping sofa for clients late-night phone calls to business contacts overseas. The guesthouse also functions as an office wing and exercise space and features the owners’ extensive collection of Indian and Asian antiques. Beyond the areas immediately surrounding the house lie vast wildflower fields.

Natalye Appel, Principal of Natalye Appel & Associates, knew her firm was in for a compelling design journey when she heard from two of her most forward-thinking, creatively challenging clients that the couple was ready to leave city lifestyle behind and make their permanent home on a 140-acre parcel of property in Colorado County. This sizable, unspoiled haven lies just west of the Katy Prairie in a transitional zone known as the Post Oak Savannah. This convergence of terrain exhibits characteristics of East Texas Pineywoods and Blackland Prairies dotted with bending, modestly sized oaks of the Hill Country. It’s no surprise the couple was drawn to this particular piece of land. He is originally from Louisiana; she grew up in Houston area. The way the palette of the landscape merged was a natural fit for the couple, given their backgrounds. The composition of the ranch property served as a foundation for much of the design and turned out to be a metaphor for the give-and-take harmony of all the minds involved in the design effort. Appel’s firm had already designed an office project for the couple’s 34

company headquarters, and had previously worked on another residential project, so she and her team had a good understanding of clients’ interests, work style and approach to design. Appel and her then-partner Lonnie Hoogeboom logged numerous site visits, gathered input from each client frequently and helped assemble what would become a round table of design and construction expertise. The team included interior designer Trina Jones Stanfield, Matrix Structural Engineering, Bos Lighting Design, Jeffrey Carbo Landscape Architects and homebuilder Thomsen Company. As the design discussion flowed, it became clear the project should include distinct work and home spaces, along with areas for the clients’ varied hobbies and pastimes. Additional outbuildings were developed as well, resulting functional ranch that focuses more on the enjoyment of the natural beauty of the area rather than agricultural production—a relaxation ranch. “If you are going to occupy a piece of land such as this, you will constantly feel drawn to surroundings,” says Appel. “You always want to see, hear and experience those surroundings. You want to be comfortable and feel like you are living outside as much as possible.”

INNOVATIVE FARMHOUSE The generous ranch house is comprised of the main living quarters and a guesthouse wing, which overlooks a 6-acre lake. The main structure includes large covered porches, screened porches, a dog-trot-type carport and additional exterior spaces that allow the homeowners to do as much outdoor living as possible. A detached dog kennel and greenhouse building accommodates the couples’ canine clan along with the gardener’s workshop. There is also a detached fish camp placed near the wellspring of the lake. Appel’s firm took great care in site planning and building design to maximize panoramic views and cross-ventilation for each space. The vast porches provide an easy connection to the natural surroundings, as well as plenty of shaded outdoor space. “Our clients have so many different interests, which brought a lot to the project,” says Natalye Appel. “We had to embrace that this

was not just a Texas house, it was a Texas house for people with broad cultural interests and experiences.” Appel explains that she and Hoogeboom, looked for spots where they could intentionally break from a standard farmhouse look. “If you look at the windows, you see that some are very regular and typical of a Texas farmhouse, but some are staggered with a vertical orientation,” says Appel. This also manifested in the rooflines, as the simple angles of the metal roof morphed into more contemporary forms where the geometry of the home pushed into irregular shapes. “The clients kept reminding us that this was a farmhouse, that they were not interested in an outrageous, over the top mansion in the country,” says Appel. “They wanted to use simple, rational, humble materials that belonged to the place, but not just a rote repetition of what we’d all seen before. I’m so grateful for the way the pushed us in that regard. That challenged us to do something

new and special, but not go overboard. It pushed us as a firm.” The exterior materials chosen are a combination of aged cypress, Hardie plank and natural stone. Appel says her partner Lonnie Hoogeboom, the builder’s crew and the clients all searched to find sources for the aged cypress. In some cases sinker cypress was used. This remarkable lumber comes from massive cypress logs that were lost during river shipments common from the 1890s to the 1930s. In recent years, the recovery of these logs after 80-100 years under water yields a well-hardened, beautiful form of cypress. SITE MATTERS Appel explains that the homeowners have a great reverence and knowledge for natural beauty of the property. “They spent many hours researching what to plant and immersed themselves in the stewardship of the entire property,” says Appel. They also made earth-minded choices: installing a geothermal HVAC system, employing solar panels to generate electricity. And, because they didn’t have access to a municipal sewer system, 38

their septic system includes aerobic spring fields so it does not disturb the lake and other natural water sources on the ranch. “I was incredibly impressed with the site,” says Jeffrey Carbo of Alexandria, Louisiana-based Jeffrey Carbo Landscape Architects. “There is a section of the property where you can see the transition from the Pineywoods to the sculptural oaks of the Hill Country.” Carbo chose to navigate the drive approach along the boundary of the two distinct landscape zones. “The fencing, surroundings, driveway and other hardscape are often difficult for an architect to let go of, but Natalye Appel did,” says Carbo. “She had input, but let us handle it. I told her it’s all about the horizontal for us. You complete the vertical design of the house and structures. We wanted there to be continuity—the result is a current interpretation of past precedents.” “In terms of design, sometimes you have to know when to stop,” says Carbo. “We let those sculptural trees near the house define what was to be more dominant and maintained and what was to be more or less left alone.” His team created that

transition with various materials, including low stone walls that were the same stone as used on the house and gave them the look of disintegrating or crumbling away like they had been there for ages. This also set up views of meadows beyond the home site. HEALTHY INTERACTION The homeowners had built and run a successful business together, so they set the tone for strong communication amongst all parties involved. They made it clear that they wanted to be active participants in the design and construction effort and that all the professionals on the job were partners in their design journey. “I thought it was healthy to have this interaction from the beginning, says Jeffrey Carbo. He describes both clients as very involved and having differing opinions, but comfortable with giving the designers the power to develop the best design solutions.

“He wanted to honor traditions, use traditional materials and evoke comfort and homey-ness,” recalls Appel. “She wanted to create an unusual residence that was interesting and thoughtprovoking, but she also sought to incorporate his preferences into their home as well.” The whole team was unified in achieving the same high standards for collaboration and mutual respect. “The builder was impeccable,” says Appel. “They created mock ups of almost every step to make sure design team and clients would be pleased.” “Natalye and Lonnie were great to work with,” says Carbo. “Both their design sense and Lonnie’s attention to detail were quite impressive. Our project manager Mike Lanaux and I agreed it was actually fun to work with Natalye and Lonnie. You can’t always say that about every job.”

One guideline is to select window treatments that enhance the architecture of the home and at the same time complement the style of the room and furnishings. For waterfront homes and homes in other scenic locations, Ruthie Magehee, owner of Island Furniture & Interiors offers a smart and attractive solution. “I recommend a Top-Down, Bottom-Up type of window treatment,” says Magehee. “It allows you to lower a blind from the top, leaving the bottom

covered so you can see out but no one can see in. Then, when you want to view the entire window, you can raise the blind all the way to the top of your window. These blinds are available in many styles and you may want to add a drape on the sides, or valance to enhance and soften the look.” Roman shades mounted well above window openings can block out light without blocking the view. Another benefit of using Roman shades is that they come in different widths,

which makes it easy to cover smaller side windows with a similar look. Another design strategy is to choose window treatments in a similar color to walls to allow the eye to look beyond the window to the view. “Of course it is all a matter of personal taste, but I usually recommend a woven blind, or grass cloth shade,” says Magehee. “They are elegant and tropical, and works well for waterfront living, I usually choose one or the other.” Magehee also suggests cellular blinds offer a more contemporary feel. “The Duette Honeycomb Shades by Hunter Douglas are the most energy efficient and comes in an array of colors. And this line is known for the Top-Down, Bottom-Up feature.”

Indecent Exposure • Leaving windows uncovered can be both costly and unsightly. Without window treatments, your home can become uncomfortable and less inviting. Watch out for these hazards of bare windows. • Naked windows can let in large amounts of room-warming sunlight, thus raising air conditioning costs. • Over time, sun damage can fade upholstery, carpets and artwork.

Additionally, there are light-control fabric options of sheer, semi-sheer, semiopaque and opaque. Helpful Hints for Successful Selections Large windows, banks of windows, French doors and sliding doors are often the focal point of living areas, which makes for daunting a decision-making process. Designers agree it’s best to narrow the selection by focusing on function first, and then think about visual appeal. We’ve assembled several tips to help you concentrate on the function before you move on to the fun stuff.

Function First • Multifunctional window treatments can be adjusted to filter sunlight, provide privacy or be raised completely to showcase the view when desired. • Cellular shades offer a wide range of flexibility for light filtration. • Consider a black-out lining or thicker material if the room is a bedroom or is occasionally used for sleeping. • Make sure windows can be opened and cleaned easily once window treatments are in place. • Think about the curious nature of children and pets as you make your selections and look for the appropriate safety options regarding cords and pulls.

Beauty Second ABOVE: Gliding window panels offer an updated alternative to vertical blinds and work well for large windows and sliding glass doors.

BELOW: Natural light is a must in the kitchen. This woven natural shade from Smith & Noble tempers bright sunlight for a pleasing effect.

• When it comes to choosing color, consider whether you want to add drama to the decor of the room or prefer to maintain a subdued mood by simply accenting the existing look. • If you choose a patterned fabric, think about if the pattern will complement or take away from your furnishings. • If your room is somewhat simple, you can turn up the look by adding texture. Layering different textures adds interest to a neutral décor.

Attic Answers

MODERN SOLUTIONS FOR MANAGING THE AIR UP THERE Below: Traditional insulation products, whether loose or in batts, are designed to slow down heat as it tries to get into the living areas of your home. Loose-fill insulation is often made of fiberglass, rock wool or cellulose in the form of loose fibers or fiber pellets. The advantage of loose-fill is that it easily conforms to the nooks and crannies of the attic space as it is blown in. Photo courtesy of Owens Corning.

Whether you are in a older home or one that is less than 10 years old, your attic may be the source of a heated debate. Attitudes are changing across the construction and remodeling industry regarding how best to manage the attic space for optimum comfort inside the home. Attics are typically accessible from within the home, so they can be one of the easiest places in your home to make improvements in how your home protects you and your family from temperature extremes. Employing the right strategies and materials in your attic can yield dramatic savings on your energy bills. For decades, attics (and walls) have been lined with loose insulation, which helps regulate indoor temperatures to a limited degree. The past several years have brought innovations to the world of attic insulation.

Radiant barriers reflect radiant heat, which comprises a large percentage of the heat in a typical Houston attic. Radiant barriers are well suited for hot climates, especially when cooling air ducts are located in the attic. Photo by silverblanket.com.

HOT TOPIC: RADIANT BARRIERS

Given the Houston area’s consistently warm climate, homeowners should consider adding a radiant barrier to their attics along with insulation. Radiant barriers function as a type of reflective insulation. “Radiant barriers perform what most people think insulation should do for their home, but doesn’t,” says Gary Schuhmann of All Tops Radiant Barrier. Radiant barriers reflects heat away from your home and take the energy out of hot air. According to the EPA, radiant barriers perform a function that is similar to that of conventional insulation, however they differ in the way they reduce the heat flow into your house. On warm days, solar energy is absorbed by the roof and heat is radiated downward toward the attic floor. When a radiant barrier is placed on the attic floor, much of the heat radiated from the hot roof is reflected back toward the roof, thereby reducing the amount of heat that moves through the insulation into the rooms below the ceiling. Reflective insulation is most effective at reducing cooling bills in hot, sunny climates.

LEFT: The Heat Shield all-aluminum radiant barrier reflects 98 percent of radiant heat, is unaffected by humidity and other weather conditions.

Foam insulation is another modern day material that is believed to hold up longer than traditional forms of insulation. Foam insulation is intended for use in a sealed attic space.

HOW HEAT TRANSFERS INTO YOUR HOME Conductive: Direct contact. If you touch a pot on the stove, the heat you feel is conductive heat transfer. Convective: Steam, moisture. If you put your hand above a boiling pot, you will feel heat in the form of steam. This is convective heat transfer. Radiant: Electromagnetic Waves. Step outside on a sunny day and feel the sun’s rays on your face. You are feeling radiant heat transfer. All objects above absolute zero (-459.7 degrees F.) emit infrared rays in a straight line in all directions.

Gary Schuhmann of All Tops Radiant Barrier uses a product called Heat Shield, which he describes as “a true radiant barrier that is solid aluminum and reflects 98 percent of radiant heat.” He points out that traditional insulation does initially slow down heat that enters your attic, but it will eventually absorb heat and therefore keep your attic in a heated state. Schuhmann explains that radiant barrier insulation systems reflect radiant heat energy instead of trying to absorb it. A pure aluminum radiant barrier is unaffected by humidity and performs in the same manner no matter how and humid the weather gets. Radiant barrier can be easily installed in new homes or offices and is easily retrofitted in existing homes, garages, offices, barns, warehouses and more. It can be laid over present insulation and will actually make that insulation more effective. In his more than 10 years of installing radiant barriers, Schuhmann says his customers consistently report significant savings on energy bills, with some as much as 40 and 50 percent lower than before installing radiant barriers. The result is a more consistently comfortable indoor climate, whether in summer or in winter, and most importantly, major savings on your overall utility costs. “a radiant barrier will easily pay for itself within two years and never needs to be replaced, where traditional insulation should be replaced every seven years and takes that long to pay for itself, too,” says Schuhmann. Greg Pruitt’s company, Rock-Crete Foam Insulators, installs polyurethane spray foam insulation. This type of insulation leaves no void or gaps between insulation and studs with excellent adhesion. “Our products do not sag, settle or deteriorate,” says Pruitt. “All the products we offer outperform loose fill insulation.” “Foam insulation creates a sealed attic assembly,” says Pruitt. “A sealed attic, will

project bring the temp in the attic down to 3-10 degrees of what the thermostat is set at. That would mean that the attic temp would be between 77-85 degrees in most houses on a 100-degree day.” NEED TO VENT

Ventilation keeps heated air moving so it heat doesn’t transfer into your home’s living space. Solar fans provide constant, or active, ventilation, while rooftop ridge vents and turbine fans provide passive ventilation whenever a breeze is blowing.

Recommended insulation levels for retrofitting wood-framed buildings.

Ventilation – moving the air – is key to moderating the temperature of an attic. Any insulated space requires ventilation to prevent the energy of heat from being absorbed by surfaces such as wood, insulation materials or people. If your attic gets hotter than the outside temperature then it is absorbing heat. According to Schuhmann, soffit vents, the sections under the eaves where air can flow through, are more effective than ridge vents. Attic fans can assure air movement at all times, even when there isn’t a natural breeze. Homeowners can receive a 30-percent federal tax credit for installing solarpowered attic fans. The credit applies to equipment placed in service between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2016. “We like to say when you ventilate, ventilate right,” says Greg Pruitt. “When you ventilate, you want to have as much ventilation as possible.

Wagger. Obviously, I’m a happy girl most of the time. I’ve seen a lot in my day, but that’s why I’m so loving and caring. I consider myself a good walker. It’s just part of my DNA. Whether it’s on a leash or a leisurly stroll through a field, I’m all over it. The great thing about being, ahem, mature, is that I’ve got all of the bases covered. I’m housetrained, friendly, I walk well on a leash, am well-mannered, and I love it when you do your googoo gaga talk with me. Come on, schnookums, let’s get outta here.
