Loveable Landmark
ABOVE: The Hamilton Ledbetter homesite in Round Top dates back to 1845. The historic property was acquired almost 20 years ago by a Houston couple, who lovingly maintained and filled the two structures with antiques from Texas and beyond.
OPPOSITE: (Above) The enclosed breezeway of the main house serves as the foyer of the two-story dogtrot. On the left wall, above the antique sideboard, hangs a historic Lone Star Flag with the lyrics to the “Eyes of Texas” inscribed on the frame. (Below) The back porch spans the full width of the house and encourages guests to sit back and enjoy the country surroundings.
Antiques add layers of charm to a historic homestead in Round Top STORY & PHOTOS BY MARY CHAVOUSTIE • ADDITIONAL PHOTOS BY TK IMAGES
eople have been going to Round Top for almost two hundred years. It was the English that first settled the area in 1826, with German immigrants following soon after in hopes of reestablishing a new home in a faraway land. In 1845, Hamilton Ledbetter relocated his family to the area, moving from Victoria to set up a plantation, joining logs with chink to form two sturdy dogtrots. In 1994, a Houston couple made their way to Round Top and purchased the log structures along with 80 acres and a barn. They quickly developed an admiration for Round Top and its people. “I fell in love with the house the first time I
P 16
saw it! And the surroundings, they were so peaceful,” says the homeowner. “Back then, Round Top was a small town — quiet and wonderful,” she says. “I felt a responsibility to the people who came in covered wagons to take care of this house which stands defiantly against time.” AUTHENTIC DETAIL
The four-bedroom, two-bath dwelling was a history-lover’s dream. The open breezeway, now enclosed, doubles as the foyer and gives guests a sampling of the early pioneer-style treasures that lie within. Even out-of-staters can’t help but admire the Lone Star flag that hangs above the antique sideboard.

“When I saw the words to the ‘Eyes of Texas’ painted on the flag, I knew I had to have it!” says the proud University of Texas alum. “The flag is hand-painted onto velvet with the artist’s name detailed on the back.” Paint was equally important for the interior space. The homeowner wanted to keep true to the original color palette, to preserve both the home’s integrity and place in time. The Williamsburg Collection by Martin Senour proved to be the ideal choice. A room that would have held a number of beds and cradles, now serves as the master bedroom, encompassing almost half of the first floor. With an eye for texture and the help of a rough-hewn backdrop, the homeowner has beautifully melded romantic with rugged. A country bench rests at the foot of her crochet canopied four-poster bed while nearby, willow blue toile covers several comfortably-stuffed armchairs and an ottoman, making for cozy seating by one of four original fireplaces. An oak daybed with its embroidered lace pillows and antique quilt provides the perfect setting for an afternoon nap. TREASURED ANTIQUES
Several pieces came with the purchase of the home including an antique pie safe that has been relocated to the upstairs bathroom. Towels rather than tarts now rest on the handmade wooden shelves. The collector’s Irish Blue Willow and Majolica find their own space on a painted pine hutch in the kitchen.

Redware provides a whimsical addition to every room. The collector refers to them as her “talking plates” as each, complete with a word or phrase, could easily converse with another. “GTT” is Gone to Texas – the words the homeowner’s ancestors wrote in a ledger as they headed for the Lone Star State. Plates proclaiming “Ya’ll come back” and “Don’t fence me in” are right at home. Redware dates back to 1625, its name originating from the reddish brown color it derives from the clay’s iron content after firing. SPICE IS NICE
The heart of the home, the kitchen, is a vibrant nexus of colorful country charm. “I saw a reproduction of an antique cook stove in a magazine and knew it would be perfect,” says the owner. Transporting the stove from Canada proved a bit challenging, as did the assembly, but the determined history lover knew it was all worth the effort. The red painted cabinets and a white farmhouse sink add even more interest to the room. Handpainted roosters top a yellow oil canvas rug for a fitting floor accent. Brass studs hold down counter tops of tin — a great touch of Texas rustic. Garden collectibles and vintage outdoor pieces are a favorite of the homeowner as evidenced by her Texas twig furniture throughout the house, porches and under the rose covered arbor by the pool. Salvaged tin, everything from French tubs to feed troughs, are often found at Round Top’s twice-a-year antique events.
ABOVE: In the colorful kitchen, a reproduction cook stove was a musthave for the homeowner. A vibrant blue hutch displays the homeowners Majolica and Irish Blue Willow collections. The yellow and black, rooster-themed rug is hand painted on canvas. RIGHT: A vintage Irish hutch houses one of several pieces of redware cherished by the homeowner. Red clay pottery known as redware was inexpensive in its day, yet collectors find its simplistic beauty priceless. OPPOSITE: A rustic arbor covered with rose vines offers a serene spot to sit a spell and take in the views of the swimming pool and much of the peaceful acreage.

Watering cans in assorted colors immediately catch the eye once inside the outbuilding, a second dogtrot located on the property. A screen made from mismatched shutters hides garden tools and supplies, sharing floor space with an antique table with overflowing ivy in a painted hatbox, a contemporary washer and dryer and an antique ironing board. Just outside the door, a fiberglass Holstein stands watch over two handmade wooden rockers by Mary Emmerling. The open area, conducive with design, almost always boasts a breeze, even in the hottest Texas summer. Young pioneers would have loved the second room of the dogtrot — a special area prepared for the owner’s grandchildren. A miniature tea set and tiny Depression glassware top a child size table with chairs. Early board games and an assortment of vintage windup toys bring back great memories for all ages. Even the barn featuers a playful accent with two ceramic hens roosting comfortably over the barn door. “The house has a personality all its own, a spirit of Texas,” she says. “I hope someone that appreciates Texas will one day appreciate this house as much as we do; it has stood for so long. This house is a tribute to the pioneers and well deserves its Historical Marker from the State of Texas. Truly, this very special home was our Brigadoon!”

Taking on Round Top MELANIE MILLAR
A DESIGNER/CLIENT TEAM DISH ON SUCCESSFULLY SHOPPING ROUND TOP FOR YOUR DECORATIVE AGENDA BY SANDRA COOK
An antique butcher block is a favorite Round Top find for Deborah and James’ kitchen. It offers the perfect height, provides storage and is up on legs, giving it authentic antique appeal.
A few short years ago, homeowner
Deborah Keyser and designer Andra White developed a fruitful decorating partnership. Deborah and her husband James Stafford were in the process of renovating the 1929 National Cash Register Building in downtown Houston when Deborah and Andra began a series of treks to major Round Top antiques events to

find a variety of pieces for Deborah and James’ home on the second floor of the historic building. Their home, a Good Brick Award winner, was featured in the January 2011 issue of Houston House & Home. Designer and former of Deep Texas shop owner Andra White met with Deborah Keyser multiple times before the two headed out for their
first Round Top buying trip. “I had never been to Round Top before,” says Deborah. “This was a little bit of a new experience for me, too, going with a client, that is,” says Andra. “When my business partner and I were shopping for the store, we stopped at every little antiques shop and junk dealer, but when you are shopping

for a client you need to spend your time very efficiently and productively,” says Andra White. “I knew that Marburger Farm was a prime selection.” “It’s very organized,” says Deborah. “I love antiquing when you can just spend the afternoon to wander and pick through things to find that special nugget, but when

STAYING FOCUSED Deborah and Andra made three separate buying trips, each to conquer a different space or aspect of the décor for the historic residence. The first trip focused on the kitchen, living and dining rooms. The second trip was all about furnishing the bedrooms and the third trip was geared toward finding wall art and items for the couple’s rooftop garden.
Each time, they purchased the early buying day tickets to be among the first to shop the dealers’ wares at each festival. They drove a pick-up truck and were prepared with packing supplise, such as old blankets. “And we always came home with that truck loaded,” recalls Andra. “On the way up there Andra had told me that a lot of buyers would be there and will buy things immediately, so if you see something you want, you have to be ready to make a quick decision.” Deborah was up to the task. “The first thing we found was the big windmill,” says Deborah. “stopped us in our tracks and thought ‘that’s such a great, architectural piece. What can we do with that?’” The windmill wheel now hangs on Deborah and James’ bedroom wall. Their list of criteria spelled out the function, look, general color range and dimensions. “We wouldn’t allow ourselves to be swayed or talk ourselves into some gorgeous piece that
MELANIE MILLAR
you’re on the clock it doesn’t really work that way. We had just one day for what we wanted to accomplish.” “We had our list — a very specific list with all the criteria for each item,” says Andra. “We would have an idea of what we were looking for with the necessary dimensions, but we were able to stay flexible in case we stumbled upon something else,” says Deborah. “Sometimes we were looking for pieces that would become part of something else, like the table base for the dining room.”
The wheel of a once-working windmill adorns a wall in the master bedroom of Deborah and James’ residence in the historic National Cash Register building.

Marburger Farms, like many other venues, offers a variety of vendors in one location.

just wouldn’t work,” says Deborah. “You can’t go to a place like that and let yourself see everything.” If that’s the case then you’re just not going to make any headway, you’re not going to get done. Of course it’s fun to just browse and admire everything when you don’t have a specific things you’re looking for.”
ROUND TOP WISDOM On the second and third trips they sought out vendors that had proven to be good sources, making a bee line to those vendors when similar items were on the shopping list. One lesson they learned was about those frustrating hold tags tied to antiques of interest. Deborah and Andra discovered when a desirable item was on hold for another shopper, that it was important to look at the expiration time on the hold tag. Sometimes it’s just an hour our so before the hold expires. If the shopper doesn’t return for the item, then you may get to purchase it after all if you circle back to that vendor’s booth. Shop everything from functional antique furniture to rare and unusual decorative objects.

On the other hand, the shopping duo learned it was important to not beat yourself up over things that got away or just didn’t happen. “You have to know how to walk away and not get hung up on things that are already sold,” says Deborah. “Ultimately, you will find something even better.” Deborah and Andra explain that it’s good to have a shopping partner who is like-minded, but can be practical when a piece strikes your interest. One person can ponder the beauty or likeability of the piece while the buddy checks out the size, color, material and other specs. Andra says that Deborah’s husband James was great at seeing the potential of the pieces, even when they were architectural elements that would be worked into a piece of furniture. And, according to Deborah, Andra was terrific tie-breaker and mediator. “It was extremely helpful, because James and I would have probably pulled each other’s hair out over a few things without Andra’s diplomatic input,” says Deborah.
