ages clipped and torn from magazines serve as the seeds of many a home building project. Homeowners Frank and Kathy Johnston learned just how dramatically the printed page can impact the design conversation when they decided to build their dream home in Round Top, Texas. Early on in the process, designer Christopher Travis assured them clippings from magazines were an integral part of the design process. A little paperwork was in order, too, with Travis’ TrueHome approach that encourages future dwellers to “dream their dream home” with the help of an evaluative workbook. The two professionals—Kathy, retired owner of Johnston & Co., a Houston advertising agency, and Frank, now broker/owner at Heritage Texas Country Properties—entered the process agreeably independent and with their own opinions. “When we decided to build the house,” explained Kathy, “I thought,

Oh no! This is going to be a horrible experience.” Yet, many magazines and cutouts later, the couple was pleasantly surprised to find they desired similar design features. GATHERING SPACES
First on the list was an abundance of wide, spacious porches—a must have to satisfy their love for entertaining. The finished result was 109 linear feet or 1090 square feet of GeoTek composite decking made up of 10-foot wide porches, flanking three sides of the home. Add to that another 200 square feet of master porch and an 800 square feet multilevel deck that doubled as a dance floor for guests and a five-piece band, a couple of years back, in celebration of Kathy’s mom’s 90th birthday. In the kitchen, black Silestone countertops and an island pair with rich custom cherry cabinetry—an ideal space for someone like Kathy who has a passion for cooking. “The Johnston home is a hybrid style with three major influences that all came from the clients’ past,” explains designer Christopher Travis. “The exterior is influenced by the German farmhouses native to the area while the foyer was a conscious attempt to create the experience of the narrow Italian streets they loved from their travels. The Arts and Crafts elements come from Kathy’s California childhood.”
open onto a vista of live oaks and cedars that stretch across the 23-acre homesite. Open views into the den, dining room, bar area and foyer are also accessible to the chef, at a glance. “Kathy is a grand hostess,” says Travis. “She wanted to be able to make sure her guests are happy while she’s working in the kitchen. That’s what drove the open floorplan.” SPECIAL ELEMENTS
Kathy is quick to qualify her plan is not totally open. She likes what she calls “segmented” walls or space, where each room retains its own unique identify. A good example is the division between the dining room and den provided by a striking leaded glass transom of peach-colored Italian glass that was original to the couple’s former home in Houston. Matching leaded glass sidelights were also removed prior to the relocation and later, fashionably refitted in the new home as doors for the dining room’s custom corner cabinets. The subtle change of flooring takes guests from the foyer to the den where the vaulted ceiling rises to 21 feet. Three sets of French doors partner with a multitude of windows to yield a dramatic look. Infused with light, the casual floorplan is lively and bright, even on rainy days.

Two guest bedrooms upstairs incorporate interior windows that, in Italy, would have opened onto a brick-paved street. In keeping with the concept, Kathy and Frank chose Old Chicago Brick for their downstairs gallery, indicative of the Italian streets they so fondly remember from their travels. Visiting family and friends enjoy the privacy of the upstairs as well as the roomy antique and vintage furniture pieces that accommodate extended stays. NATURAL BEAUTY
Multiple pairs of binoculars are mainstays in the Johnston home, readily accessible for a closer look at the deer and Great Blue Heron that frequent the property. Glass artist Diane Tovey from nearby Carmine was commissioned to create a colorful interpretation of the winged visitors for the couple’s new master bath. A 1,400-square-foot addition was added in 2010, which included the new master bedroom and bath. The design incorporates views of the lake and a rambling oak that begs to come inside. Bronze hardware and matching sinks from a foundry in Sedona add a rugged contrast to the natural palette of wood and stone. “I knew I wanted tone-on-tone, something a bit more organic, more

The headboard and footboard of the antique spindled bed blend well in one of the home’s “non-square rooms.” Colorful antique quilts are cherished items found during the antique event held twice a year in Round Top, Warrenton and neighboring towns. The next show is March 8 through April 8, 2012 with some dealers/exhibitors opening earlier, some later.
calming,” said Kathy. “I always feel like I’m sitting in a tree house in this room, especially from the tub, which sits where one of the biggest branches of the tree once did.” A limestone bridge and recirculating rock creek highlight the front of the home—Jack Finke’s solution to what was once a rather unsightly natural wet-weather creek. The former Round Top stonemason, who passed away in 2010, was wellknown for his craftsmanship and creativity throughout the area, particularly at International Festival Institute. “We had so much fun designing and building this house,” said Kathy. “Maybe we’ll do this again!” Kathy’s Blue Door Décor Etc. is housed in a period structure, nestled among a grouping of specialty design and retail shops in Round Top’s new Henkel Square Market. The home’s original master bath, now a guest bath, boasts an antique-style tub and lovely stained glass—a collaboration of Kathy and her sister, Jennifer.

Confessions of a Collector A one time-Houstonian and current resident of the Round Top area, shares her secrets to collecting antiques for years of enjoyment PHOTOS BY TOM O’HARA
Collectors learn to assess the quality of antiques as well as how to hone in on which items have the potential to become a treasured part of their home.
When asked if her home is decorated in a particular style, our esteemed anonymous collector informed us that antiques are her home décor. A history buff by nature, she reveals that she got interested in collecting antiques after her financially minded husband “kept bringing home articles about how they were a good investment.” “He was in school at the time, so we bought a roll-top desk,” she says. “From there I fell in love with old clocks.” Over the years, she has worked in a couple of antique shops and learned a great deal from the knowledgeable owners.

“The history of things drew me in, as well as the unique characteristics of the objects themselves. And my husband never said ‘stop’.” Today, her collections include remarkable ice cream and candy molds, as well as early kitchen tools, such as spice grinders, butter pads, pie crimpers and scales. She treasures her odd pieces, such as a chicken catcher and a P-shaped tool used to pass messages to railroad engineers from someone on the platform (an example of her desire to document the ways of the past). “I truly love the history of things, it became my passion,” she says. She confesses that when she makes travel plans, she seeks out the antiques shops first.

European Antiques fill the Continental Tent at The Original Round Top Antiques Fair
April 4-7, hosts approximately 300 exhibitors with a diverse variety of antiques and decorative arts including Early American furniture, European and Asian collections, trendsetting Industrial furnishings, fine art and more. Susan Franks acquired the twice yearly event with her husband Bo in 2005 and has been improving the exhibits and facilities since her first show. Begun in 1969 as a Country Show, with The Big Red Barn Event Center added in 2002, the show is a cornerstone of the entire Round Top experience. Afrer more than 40 years, the show remains a must-see event for all who visit to shop, study and add to their collections. The Big red Barn Event Center includes the Continental Tent, now in its third year, filled by dealers from all across the United States with items gathered from estates here and by shoppers in Europe who buy at auctions, estate sales and markets all year planning for Round Top. Big Red Barn Tent hosts collections in tune with the latest styles such as Industrial, Mid Century décor and more from other parts of the world. Carmine Dance Hall offers collections of assorted antiques for the home including early linens, jewelry, fine sterling silver flatware and hollow ware.

Southwestern Elegance of Ingram, Texas offers a global assortment of furniture and accessories from various eras. Beyond the outstanding Texas dealers, Manor House Antiques of Knoxville, Tenn. carries small antiques from England and The Continent including tea caddies, dining table accoutrements, and fine silver hollow ware. Owen Swift of Riverhead, N.Y, a native of Ireland, offers fine wood and upholstered pieces from his homeland and The United Kingdom while Floridian Craig Mayor features more from the other side of the English Channel. Steven Postans of Sarasota, Fla. brings the collections he finds in his European shopping expeditions. Sport and Spool of Goldsboro, N.C. are new additions to the show with their collection of sports equipment, school colors and textiles.
