TERRIER GROUP
Breeds such as the Airedale, and Yorkshire Terrier are part of a group bred to rid property of vermin.
WORKING GROUP resulting in one dog being named Best in Show. The Houston World Series of Dog Shows is 3 separate shows, Friday-Sunday. Only the Best of Breed winners advance to compete in the Group competitions. Each AKC breed falls into one of seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Best In Show is then selected from these 7 dogs. onformation at a dog show is a process of elimination
These dogs were bred to pull carts, guard property and perform search and rescue services. Examples include the Samoyed and Malamute.
SPORTING GROUP
These dogs were bred to hunt game birds both on land and in water. Examples include Pointers, Retrievers, Setters.
HOUND GROUP
Breeds such as the Beagle, Basset, or Greyhound were bred for hunting game by sight or scent.
HERDING GROUP
The German Shepherd Dog is a good example of the herding group, bred to help shepherds and ranchers herd their livestock.
NON-SPORTING GROUP
This diverse group includes the French Bulldog, Dalmatian and Poodle. These dogs vary in size and function, and many are considered companion dogs.
TOY GROUP
These dogs were bred to be household companions. This group includes Maltese, Pomeranian, Pug and Papillon.
