O
n Wednesday in Washington, D.C., James W. von Brunn, 88-year-old anti-Semite and white supremacist, took a .22-caliber rifle into the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and shot and killed security guard Stephen T. Johns. Earlier this month, Dr. George Tiller, who ran a clinic that performed lateterm abortions, was murdered while ushering at his local church by an anti-choice zealot named Scott Roeder. In April, three Pittsburgh police officers were shot to death by a right-wing extremist who believed the president was going to take his guns away. These hate murders received national attention. Less attention is given to
Guns and Hate the 30,000 gun deaths each year, or the gun-related assaults that can number up to 400,000 in a year. Thirteen people slain in Binghamton, N.Y. Four policemen taken out in Oakland, Calif. Ten citizens gunned down in Alabama. Eight murdered in a North Carolina nursing home. And that’s just in the past few months. The murders of Stephen T. Johns and Dr. George Tiller were preceded by a Department of Homeland Security report that warned about the rise of right-wing extremist hate groups, and was immediately denounced by Republican legislators. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which has tracked right-wing extremism for years. warned in February that there are now more suspected hate groups in the U.S. than ever in our recorded history. The reasons are clear. The election of Barack Obama may demonstrate progress toward a post-racist-society to many, but to others it constitutes a threat and a betrayal. The economic downturn has been particularly brutal on manufacturing workers, on veterans and on lowwage workers. Many of these people feel abused by their government, threatened by low-wage immigrants and angered by civil-rights advances. This hatred is fed by the extreme rhetoric of our politics -- as Republicans accuse Obama of promoting “fascist” poli-
cies, and call Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Right-wing radio host Glenn Beck charged that Obama’s lifting of the ban on stem cell research was designed to create a new “master race.” Newt Gingrich says the U.S. is surrounded by “paganism.” Rush Limbaugh accused the Obama administration of actively seeking to destroy America as we know it. All this speech is protected by the First Amendment, but that doesn’t make it any less reckless. Add to this hatred our obsession with guns -- which has reached ridiculous extremes. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin was disgusted when he said that the banks still “own this place.” But the banks have nothing on the gun lobby -- which has cowed Democrats and Republicans from what once was bipartisan common sense. Now both parties scrape low to please. The credit card reform bill was amended to allow concealed weapons in national parks. In Virginia, R. Creigh Deeds won the Democratic nomination for governor while supporting measures to allow concealed weapons in restaurants that serve alcohol. Bush let the assault weapons ban die, and now Obama seems loath to take it up. Adding guns to the festering hate in America is like pouring gasoline on fire. Now, our police are outgunned on our own streets. Gun show loopholes allow wouldbe terrorists or haters easy access to guns.
Concealed weapons will take an evergreater toll as they turn bar arguments into lethal encounters. There are at least 200 million guns in America. This isn’t about hunting deer or quail. This is about arming the haters, giving them the right to conceal weapons or arm themselves with assault weapons that are made for only one thing: killing lots of people. Hate is on the rise. Guns are on the rise. Hate and guns are a deadly combination. Most Americans are neither haters nor gun nuts. Most support common sense laws to limit easy access to guns. Few want to arm themselves with a concealed weapon to enter a restaurant or a national park. It is hard to find anyone who thinks it a good idea for our police to be outgunned on our streets, or for would-be terrorists to have easy access to assault weapons. Guns will not provide economic security. Hunters do not need assault weapons to kill deer. Honest gun owners have a huge stake in policing the sale of guns so the nuts and haters have a hard time getting them. But instead of strengthening our laws after 9/11, we have been weakening them. The majority is getting rolled by a mobilized minority. Only leadership can turn that around -- and it has been absent without leave on gun control for too long. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org.

d Gonzalez, an 18-year Houston Police Homicide Sergeant won 61 percent of the vote in a special election run-off Saturday, June 13 to succeed Adrian Garcia who resigned his Heights and north side Houston City Council District H seat earlier this year after becoming Harris County Sheriff. “Having been born and raised in District H, attending its schools, building a business here and settling here with Melissa and our four daughters, We’ve made a commitment to this community, its families and its future,” said Gonzalez with his wife Dr. Melissa Gonzalez at his side as they savored in the success of the election. Gonzalez was endorsed by Congress Members Al Green, Gene Green and Sheila Jackson Lee; State Senators. Rodney Ellis, Mario Gallegos and John Whitmire; State Representatives. Carol Alvarado, Ana Hernandez, Amando Walle and Jessica Farrar; City Council Member James Rodriguez; County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia; Constables Victor Trevino and Ruben Davis and his mentor Sheriff Garcia who to thundering applause introduced him Saturday night as the Council Member-elect. “I feel just tremendous and am humbled because the voters of District H

have spoken. I‘ll use my law enforcement and business background to build on the diverse relationships I have in all this district’s neighborhoods, civic, religious and business organizations and with area leaders to better public safety, neighborhood protection, historic preservation, education and quality of life for residents,” the HPD Hostage Team Negotiator said with the Rocky Theme blaring behind him. Gonzalez beat former high school teacher and former council aide Maverick Welsh who had hoped his barrage of negative mail pieces would have made him the first gay district Houston City Council Member. Gonzalez earned 61 percent of the vote to Welsh’s 39 percent with 4,680 ballots cast. While 4,680 turnout or five percent of the 93,883 registered voters voting in the run-off, it actually exceeded the 4,186 turn out of ballots cast in the initial nine candidate special election May 9, a rarity in Houston runoffs. Gonzalez will be sworn in at Wednesday’s Council meeting for Garcia’s last six months. This fall Gonzalez will run again for his first of three two year terms allowed by law while Welsh said he may challenge Garcia again or run for an at large seat.

How do you show Dad how much you care? Discover some favorite gifts, celebrations, outings and more.
HOLD AN ICE-CREAM TASTING
If celebrating Father’s Day were a competition, the Parsons family would win the prize for sweetest tradition. Every year, the Landrum, S.C., clan holds a tasting contest in honor of dad Terry, who has a special fondness for ice cream. Mom Susan buys eight varieties and wraps the pints in paper towels to hide the flavors. After lunch, Mom, Dad and kids — Cheston, 20, Riley, 17, Samuel, 12, and Ellis, 4 — gather in the kitchen. Susan serves small scoops from each pint and hands out homemade ballots, and then the rest of the family gets to work. “Everyone has to guess the flavor or at least some of the ingredients of each,” Susan says. “It’s a lot of fun. And the winner gets to keep the Daddy’s Big Scoop trophy (left) until the following year.”
TAKE DAD ON A SURPRISE ADVENTURE
Eight-year-old Truth Muller of Rock Hill, N.Y., likes to take his dad on a mystery road trip for Father’s Day. “We pick a spot, give my husband a few clues, like ‘pack a bathing suit’ or ‘wear your hiking boots,’ then head off,” says mom Maura. Two of their most successful trips so far have been to the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pa., and to the Land of Make Believe amusement and water park in Hope, N.J. “The Houdini Museum was actually an accident,” Maura says. “We hopped in the car for our 2005 Father’s Day trip to the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour in Scranton, but as we neared the exit on the highway, we passed a billboard for the Houdini Museum. My husband got so excited he nearly jumped out of his seat while driving. ‘I’ve always wanted to go to the Houdini Museum!’ he shouted. What could we do? My son and I just looked at each other and shrugged. We went to the Houdini Museum and had a spectacular day.”

GIVE DAD A YEAR OF PIZZA
Many families told us they give Dad homemade coupon books (good for yard work, car washes, hugs and kisses, and more) for Father’s Day. One of the more unusual coupon themes comes from the Reynolds family of Kenmore, Wash. “My husband loves pizza,” says mom Wendy. “So last year, our kids gave him a pizza-ofthe-month club.” To make the coupons, they printed logos off
the Internet for 12 restaurants they had never tried. Then they put them in a homemade booklet. “The rule is, when Dad pulls off his coupon, we have to drop everything and go out for pizza,” says Wendy. As a bonus, the coupons also are helping the recently relocated family get to know their new hometown. “It’s been fun to try different places,” says Wendy. “And we’ve even found a new favorite!”
CREATE AN ANNUAL WORK OF ART
Since she was a baby, Isabella Fogg, 3, has given her dad a painting created especially for Father’s Day. “The first time she made one, my husband couldn’t believe it,” says mom Elecia. “I had to show him the photographs to prove she did it.” For each project, Elecia first helps her daughter pick out a color scheme. Then she paints a 9- by 12-inch canvas with a base color and gives it to Isabella along with paintbrushes, sponges and small squeeze bottles of craft acrylics. When the painting is dry, Elecia seals the design with a clear varnish. “My husband has a nice collection hanging in his office,” Elecia says. “They are very inexpensive and look professional, and Isabella feels oh so proud.”

laska Gov. Sarah Palin is ticked off at CBS’ late-night host for the barbs he’s thrown at her and her daughter. Maybe we all should be ticked off at the obvious farce we had to be subjected to by the Palins when they showed up at the Republican National Convention, with her unwed pregnant daughter and her soon-to-be son-in-law in tow. It was pretty pathetic to witness the fake relationship that we were told would result in a marriage. I took a bet with some of my colleagues that that sucker never would happen. And we learned in March that it won’t. Sarah, here’s the deal: David Letterman is a comedian. And comedians
Sarah Palin, the Joke’s on You can say some absolutely hilarious stuff, and then they can say some downright dumb stuff. That comes with the territory. As a parent, you have a right to be upset with jokes being made at the expense of you and your daughter. But you know what? We all have tired of this continuing soap opera. You stood tall at the GOP convention, saying abstinence is the only way to go, and staring you in the face was a clear example that even your own daughter and her dropout boyfriend-fiance didn’t listen. Yeah, telling us that and trying to get us to believe it was a total joke. Your daughter later said abstinence isn’t realistic. But then you turned around and contradicted her. Then we had to hear you talk about your loving, happy, adorable, Christian-values family. And Levi says that he stayed over -- even though the two weren’t married -- and that he really isn’t being allowed to be the father of the child the way he would like to. Sorry, Sarah, this continuing storyline involving you is like a bad
movie. Frankly, we’ve tired of the Sarah Palin act. She wants to be taken seriously, but when you’re spending more time getting into a back and forth with a doggone comedian rather than trying to shore up your leadership skills, then it’s clear you’re playing out of your league. In a recent poll, not even 1 percent of the responders saw her as a leader in the GOP. Yeah, she didn’t even get 1 percent. I think that’s a joke and something to laugh at. It is clear that Gov. Sarah Palin excites some in the Republican base. But it’s becoming increasingly clear that that base is getting smaller and smaller. So while she is spending her time going toeto-toe with Letterman, the likes of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are trying to put forth serious policy plans that they hope can revive the GOP. That brings me back to a conversation I had after the election with a woman who was trying to convince me on a flight from Chicago to Washington, D.C., that Palin is the next Ronald Reagan. This woman, with her Southern

drawl that reminded me of women from my native Texas, said Palin would show us all what she is made of. I told her that there was no way in hell she would remind us of Reagan. But I now take that back. Prior to politics, Reagan was a B-list actor who really found his calling in politics. Watching Palin now is like watching one of those corny Reagan movies you might find flipping through the satellite one late night. You stop for a second, watch this person try to act, and just give a dismissive laugh and keep moving on. Yeah, that’s pretty much my reaction to anything Gov. Sarah Palin does these days. She’s just a B-list actress playing a politician, making one bad movie after another. Roland S. tress to protect the Texans end zone from potential breaches. Kubiak craves for an aggressive defense in pursuit of opposing quarterbacks. He thirsts to witness his Texans defense flying across the field and laying the wood to the opposition. In an effort to manufacture a new culture on the defensive side of the ball, Kubiak named Frank Bush as the new defensive coordinator. Bush is entering his third season with the Texans and his 19th in the National Football Page 1 League. He is expected to spark a fire under the Texans

defense that appeared to be a step behind the opposition 2008. Last season, the Texans ranked at the bottom amongst sacks with 25. Mario Williams led the way with 12. The defense ranked 22nd in yards (336.6) and 27th in points allowed (24.6). The Texans acquired four free agents and five draft choices on defense. The coaching staff will approach improving the defense by focusing on the front seven. A solid push up front should provide relief for the secondary. In an attempt to free Williams of double-teams, the Texans acquired Antonio Smith from the National Football Conference champion, Arizona Cardinals. Smith signed a five-year $35 million freeagent contract. Smith has great size at 6-4, 280 pounds. The fifth round draft pick from Oklahoma State had 41 tackles and 3.5 sacks last season. Second round draft pick Connor Barwin out of Cincinnati is expected to add depth to a solid attack. Barwin has displayed the potential to evolve into a prolific pass rusher. Coaches feel his emergence is a matter of gaining experience and getting a feel for NFL football. First round draft pick, Linebacker, Brian Cushing will start strong side. Zac Diles will compete with Xavier Adibi for weak side Linebacker and the 2007 Defensive Rookie; DeMeco Ry-
ans will start in the middle. Unfortunately, football isn’t played on paper. Bush was appointed Defensive coordinator to blend and develop the talent on defense. In 2008, the Texans allowed 394 total points. Kubiak’s squad struggled on the road finishing 2-6 and only managed to squeeze out two wins in the division. New defensive coordinator, Frank Bush’s task is to orchestrate a fearless and energetic defense to slow down the high-powered offenses comfortably resting at the top of the division and conference. At times last season, the Texans teased their fans with glimpses of the chaos a focused Texan’s defense is capable of creating in the backfield. However, in order to improve on last season’s 8-8 record, the defense must be consistent. Kubiak is convinced a more consistent defense will translate into a better road record and a more competitive Texan team in the division. The Texans are continuing to make strides towards the playoffs. The players trust Kubiak and the direction the team is moving. While many teams have lost productive players this off-season, the Texans are adding more pieces to the puzzle. If this is the season the Texans make the playoffs, it should be attributed to moves made on the defensive side of the ball.

2009 GRANDFATHERS OF
STYLE By Jo-Carolyn Goode
I
Editor-at-Large
f the hardest job in the world is that of a mother, then that of a dad has to be the second hardest job. Heavily weighing on their shoulders is the responsibility to make sure that their little bundle of joy has everything he/she wants and desires. They are there to have a heavy hand when discipline is needed and a tender hand when care is required. At all times their hand of love guides the new life along its way. But just where do dads get all their knowledge and skills to execute their job to the best of their ability, from their dad of course. That’s why Houston Style Magazine is honoring grandfathers. The men that are wise beyond their years are the roots to helping future generations prosper. Read all about the 2009 Most Stylish Grandfathers and Happy Father’s Day to dads everywhere.
to be a grandfather, and see the extension of the love and discipline shine through in another generation. I have to take a minute to brag, this is what granddads do. At 2 ½ years of age, my granddaughter not only possesses a great heart and respectful manners, she can also identify the letters in the alphabet in any random order; she knows over 10 shapes including hexagon and octagon; she can count to 50 and to 10 in Spanish; she can remind you of the President and first ladies’ names, and sing Jesus Loves Me. 3. Do you have any parenting advice? The parenting advice I would give every parent is profoundly simple: Enjoy every minute of your child’s life because it goes by so fast. Rear your children with unconditional love, while nurturing their innate abilities to succeed. Teach them reverence for God in their lives and to always respect herself and others. Many times my wife and I joyously remind ourselves, “We have a grandbaby.” We are amazed at not only the level of joy that brings us, but also the responsibility that we must help instill into our grandbaby, Nina, to set high goals and continue on the course to attain them. Right now, when asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up? She replies that she wants to attend Harvard and become a doctor. What kind of doctor? . . . a Pediatrician.”
Nina Lowe and J. Carlton Wallace
Grandfather’s Name: Mr. J. Carlton Wallace Babies’ Name: Nina Symone Lowe 1. What is the best part about being a grandfather? In short, being a grandfather is…GRAND! Known as Poppi to my granddaughter, Nina, gives me immense joy and mere words could never fully express the immeasurable fulfillment she brings to my life. Grand-parenthood is amazing for a myriad of reasons. Of the infinite number on my list, I offer the following: I enjoy countless play dates with “Poppi’s Nina-Bina”; her inquisitive nature reminds me of how precious life is; her angelic spirit enables me to not sweat the small things; and her beautiful smile warms my heart. 2. What is one thing that you have learned from watching your daughter be a parent? By watching my daughter, KaTrice, I am mindful of the rewarding job my wife, Anita, and I have done. It is a “living” legacy

Grandfather’s Name: Maner Frazier Baby’s Name: Savannah Marie Hartley 1. What is the best part about being a grandfather? The best part about being a grandfather is living long enough to be one. When I turned 50, I really started thinking about how it would feel to be a grandfather. I was 59 when Savannah was born and I’m glad I’m still able to move around. I love playing with her and just watching her grow and learn new things! 2. What is one thing that you have learned from watching your daughter be a parent? 3. Do you have any parenting advice? My advise is to raise the child in a Godly manner. Stay close to each other and show love as a family, and overall concern about the well-being of the child. Do things that will keep them interested in education and definitely support them in any positive activities they want to pursue. Teaching them to respect themselves and others. And if all possible stay away from things that will cause you headaches in the future.
Gabrielle English and Pastor D. A. Goston
Grandfather’s Name: Pastor D. A. Goston Baby’s Name: Gabrielle English 1. What is the best part about being a grandfather? I feel the best part of being a grandfather is God has given me the opportunity to watch them grow and see their smiling faces. What a blessing!! 2. What is one thing that you have learned from watching your daughter be a parent? I am so proud of my children. It is exciting to me to see how my children have taken what I tried to instill in them and watch them instill these same values and belief in their children. 3. Do you have any parenting advice? The best advice I could give is to always keep God first in your children’s lives and teach them to be respectful and productive young men and women. Our children are our future and it is our responsibility to train them in the proper way.
By Nicholas Gordon Special to Syle Magazine
Grandfathers are fathers who are grand, Restoring the sense that our most precious things Are those that do not change much over time. No love of childhood is more sublime, Demanding little, giving on demand, Far more inclined than most to grant the wings Allowing us to reach enchanted lands. Though grandfathers must serve as second fathers, Helping out with young and restless hearts, Each has all the patience wisdom brings, Remembering our passions more than others, Soothing us with old and well-honed arts.
Having difficulties to overcome Oh, if life were as easy as rhyme. Leaving us wasn’t his choice at all Loving us forever was,
And in our hearts he remains, Never again to leave us. Dearest Grandpa, you’re always missed and are forever loved.
Definition Of Grandpa By Bobbie R. Bringold Special to Syle Magazine
Having an answer for every question Understanding more than I ever knew, Glad to help relieve any form of stress, Happy no matter what there was to do. Placing fake bets on silly horse races, And always with a smile, Trying so hard to make everyone happy, Regardless of an extra mile. Intentions always on the good side, Careful to always say the right thing, Knowing more than we’ll ever know, but Maybe he’s above us with a pair of wings. Unlimited love to us he gave, Living life one day at a time,

is captured and arrested. A trial date is scheduled and if his funds have been depleted, he is afforded an attorney at the expense of taxpayers, including the tax money of the victim he murdered. As a criminal, he had a choice when he committed this savage deed. His victim had no choice. The criminal gets every opportunity possible to enjoy life and, at the very least, the prospect of hope of not being found guilty. How’s that for justice? I, for one, would like to change this video game type of criminal justice system. The laws we have make a mockery of the deaths of victims. We need laws that will strike fear into the minds of potential lawbreakers. I mean tough laws that are publicized so that when a criminal decides to break the law, he knows the consequences of his actions. He still will have received more warning than his victim. Is this fair? For instance, if some idiot decides to steal a vehicle, he will already know that when he is captured, there will be no more pedal to the metal in the future. If that fool is so stupid as to commit the crime anyway so be it. Stupidity cannot be rehabilitated. Criminals ruin the lives of too many families, and they do this because there is no real deterent to crime. I have a solution for people who decide to put the public and police officers at risk by driving recklessly. Law-abiding citizens should see to it that the criminals are shipped to an island in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico and let them rot there for the rest of their lives. I would, of course, have some com-
I am willing to bet that taking the hands, penises, feet, and freedom away from the criminals, and then letting them waste away on a desolate island would drastically reduce the crime rate. We should stop feeling sorry for robbers murderers and reckless drivers. Let’s give them an incentive to amend their criminal behavior by changing the laws. After all does the Bible not say, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?” – Out of here! EDITOR’S NOTE: H.B. Financial Advice for New Fathers
By Jason Alderman
P
Special to Syle Magazine
eople often say mothers have the hardest job in the world – and I wouldn’t dispute that. But being a father might be the second hardest job in the world. And becoming a dad for the first time is a challenge for all men. Putting aside the physical and emotional rigors of fatherhood, the financial implications of having a child are staggering. According to the USDA, the average cost for a middle-income family to raise a child until age 18 is over $200,000 – and that doesn’t even include college. Small wonder, then, that nearly 40 percent of Americans surveyed by Visa Inc. said they weren’t prepared financially for the birth of their first child. As one dad to another, let me share a few financial planning strategies that can help map out a strong financial future for your family: Get insured. Although young, single adults often go underinsured, if your family depends on your income, you shouldn’t be unprepared for life’s unexpected events. Buy adequate coverage for: Health insurance. If you don’t think kids are expensive, start adding up the costs for prenatal exams, deliv-
ery, immunizations, check-ups, broken arms, medications, dentist appointments, braces – the list goes on. When comparing medical plans, focus on issues like monthly premium, copayment, deductible and prescription amounts, in- and out-of-network charges, and coverage limits and exclusions. Homeowner/renter’s insurance. Don’t allow theft, fire, faulty plumbing or other catastrophes to leave your family without possessions or a place to live. Consider choosing a higher deductible to lower your premium, and opt for “replacement cost” coverage, which will replace items in today’s dollars. Life insurance. Depending on your family’s size and ages, you’ll probably want coverage worth at least five to 10 times your annual pay; more, if you want to cover college costs. And don’t forget to insure your spouse so you’ll be protected as well. Disability insurance. Nearly a third of us will suffer serious disabilities between ages 35 and 65. Yet many folks forego long-term disability insurance, potentially leaving them without an income after a serious accident or illness. To learn more about the financial implications of disability and other unexpected life events, visit Practical Money Skills for Life, Visa’s free personal financial management site (www.practicalmoneyskills.com/unexpected). Start saving now. It’s ironic: When you’re young and can least afford it, that’s when you can make the most lasting impact on your financial future. The earlier you start saving and “compounding” or reinvesting the interest earned, the faster your savings will grow.
That’s true whether you’re saving to buy a house, pay for retirement or send your kids to college. One tip: If your employer offers 401(k) matching contributions, contribute at least enough to take full advantage of the match: A 50 percent match is the same as earning 50 percent interest on savings. And finally, spend responsibly.
If you buy things you don’t really need or can’t afford, you’ll just end up having to work longer hours to pay for them. That’s unrecoverable time you could have spent watching your kids grow. Make Dad’s menu special with fresh, seasonal flavors FAMILY FEATURES
M
oms and kids can make Father’s Day exciting this year by making Dad some great tasting treats from the heart. Not only will it keep spending in check, the results will taste delicious and kids will have fun being part of the action. Start by serving Dad breakfast in bed. Try a Kiwifruit Potassium Power Smoothie, an allnatural smoothie that is a meal in itself. Kids can personalize the breakfast by peeling and cutting kiwifruit into stars, hearts and other fun shapes to add to the smoothie. (Kiwifruit shapes can also top pancakes or cereal.) Later in the day, older kids can be Dad’s helper at the grill. Try sweet and juicy fruit skewers along with Curried Turkey Sliders With Chutney — the tropical flavor of the kebabs and the tangy curry of the sliders make the perfect taste combination that will make Dad feel really special. Fresh fruit also perks up cocktails and mocktails. A Green Kiwifruit Vesper cocktail or mocktail is just the thing to finish off an unforgettable Father’s Day.
Quick tips on cooking with kiwifruit
Green kiwifruit is a natural meat tenderizer. Simply peel and mash a kiwifruit and spread it on a cut of meat. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes and then lightly scrape off the kiwifruit before cooking. Look for plump and smooth-skinned kiwifruit with no wrinkles, bruises or punctures. Ripe green and gold kiwifruit will keep at room temperature for a few days. Keep them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to store longer. To speed up the ripening process, put kiwifruit in a brown bag with an apple or banana and leave on your kitchen counter. More recipes and nutritional information are available at www.zesprikiwi.com.
Curried Turkey Sliders With Kiwifruit Chutney

Make chutney just prior to serving. Curried Turkey Sliders 1 pound lean ground turkey 1/4 cup finely diced onion 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 12 mini burger or small dinner rolls, split and toasted Preheat grill to medium. A two-piece serving of kiwifruit has twice the vitamin C of an orange, as much potassium as a banana and as much fiber as a serving of bran flakes — all for less than 100 calories and around $1. Green kiwifruit offers a tangy-sweet flavor, while gold is more tropicalsweet. No need to peel. It’s easy — just cut and scoop kiwifruit. Don’t let this fuzzy little fruit intimidate you. Kids find kiwifruit easier to eat than you might think. Zespri gold kiwifruit is in season through October. Zespri green kiwifruit is in season through November.

Style Book Review “Drama High: Keep It Movin” by L. Divine
By Terri Schichenmeyer Style Literary Writer
E
ver since you were old enough to know, it’s been your one dream: Wheels. Four of ‘em, and freedom. If you had your own car, there’d be no more taking the bus. No more sweating a walk across town, no more begging a ride or embarrassment of calling your parents. If you had your own wheels, life
would be sweet. Sixteen-year-old Jayd Jackson thought that, too, until her father handed her keys to a hoopty she didn’t want. But in the new book “Drama High: Keep It Movin’” by L. Divine, those old wheels may be the least of her worries. It’s Christmas break and, as usual, Jayd Jackson is up to her braids in drama. Her man, Rah, is trippin’ because Jayd is spending time with her white ex-boyfriend, Jeremy. She and Jeremy are just friends now, but Jayd knows she has to guard against any feelings she still has for him. Still, Rah has nowhere to talk. He spends way too much time with his babymama, Sandy. Jayd understands that Rah only wants to be with his daughter - Jayd loves Rahmina, too - but it seems like he always runs when Sandy hollers, and that just ain’t right. And then there’s what’s going on at school: Jayd’s former best friend, Nettie has gone to the Dark Side to hang with the popular white girls, but not before turning Jayd in for forging absent slips for her girl, Mickey. But Mickey’s got more than school problems. She’s pregnant with Nigel’s baby… or at least she thinks it’s Nigel’s. The baby’s father could be Mickey’s
other man, a gangster who promises revenge on Nigel. Through this all, though, Jayd has her Mama, who is really her grandmother. For years now, Lynn Mae has been passing on her gifts to Jayd, as well as rites and ceremonies that their ancestors performed for generations. Even though Jayd’s mother watches over her and gives Jayd advice telepathically, Mama counsels Jayd to pay attention to her night dreams and to be careful who she hangs out with. Lynn Mae knows danger can move into a girl’s life at any time. And our Jayd has grown up. She’s not the girl she was in the first Drama High book, and I’m not so sure that’s a good thing. I’ll admit that “Drama High: Keep It Movin’” is probably realistic, in a big-city way. There are undoubtedly lots of girls who deal with the things that author L. Divine’s characters experience. But this Jayd is harder and pretty street savvy and – although it’s a big part of who Jayd is – there’s a big psychic-spells-potions thread running through this book that some parents might find uncomfortable. All this makes me miss the sweetness of the old Jayd, and her innocence. If you’ve read all the other books
