April 14 - April 20, 2011

ne hundred and fifty years ago today, the Civil War began, the savage struggle over whether America would be a land of freedom or of slavery. Americans suffered more loss of life than in World War I and World War II combined. Slavery was ended, but racial inequity was not. In the South, denial that slavery was the root cause of the secession and war began immediately after the Confederacy’s surrunder. And that denial of reality continues to corrode our politics to this day. In a brilliant essay in Time Magazine, “The Way We Weren’t,” David Von Drehle, notes that a recent Harris Interactive poll asked Americans what the Civil War was about, and found that a majority of Americans -- including a staggering two-thirds of white respondents in the 11 states that formed the Confederacy -- answered that the South was mostly motivated by “states’ rights,” rather than the future of slavery. The argument for states’ rights provided the rationale for ending the Reconstruction after the Civil War, breaking the promise to the freed slaves, and yoking the South back under racial apartheid. And when the civil rights movement finally ended legal segregation, states’ rights became the banner under which the South resisted school desegregation. The modern Republican Party was built on a Southern strategy, using race as a wedge to divide middle- and low-income voters. When Ronald Reagan opened his presidential campaign by talking about states’ rights and community control in Philadelphia, Miss., a town known only for the murder of three civil rights workers, everyone got the message. Denial is not simply a syndrome of the former Confederate states. Slavery was also widespread in the North, as was segregation. When the slaves and their children came North, they found themselves redlined out of good homes, good schools and good jobs. To this day, African-Americans are last hired and first fired, suffering twice the unemployment rate as white Americans. To this day, African-American children attend racially segregated public schools, often suffering from savage inequality in funding and in skilled teachers. To this day, AfricanAmericans must struggle with a system of criminal injustice that makes them more likely than whites to be stopped, more likely to be searched if stopped, more likely to be arrested, more likely to be imprisoned for the same crimes. The problem of the 20th century, wrote W.E.B. Du Bois, “is the problem of the color line.” And now, as America moves toward being a majority minority country, the

150 Years After problem of the color line remains in the 21st century. Yes, great progress has been made, as the presence of Barack Obama in the White House attests. But race still colors our debates, and skews our priorities. When Wall Street excess and regulatory lassitude blew up the global economy, conservatives sought to defend what Alan Greenspan admitted was a “flaw” in their worldview by laying the blame on blacks. They argued with a straight face that the powerful poverty lobby forced hapless banks to make loans to unqualified urban borrowers, thereby inflating the housing bubble and causing the mess. Never mind that most of the subprime loans were issued and marketed by financial houses that weren’t covered by the Community Reinvestment Act. Never mind that the banks were so rapacious that they invented synthetic -- fake -- packages of mortgages for speculation. America is a more unequal country, with more children in poverty and more citizens without health care than any other industrial country. Many would deny that this has anything to do with race. It is rather our tradition of small government and states’ rights. But there is little doubt that were Americans of one race rather than a melting pot, had we not been stained by racial slavery and segregation, we would do far more to ensure every child a healthy and fair start in life. Today, the condition of AfricanAmericans is worsening. De facto segregation is expanding. The cuts in public education, public transportation, public health care and jobs training disproportionately hit African-Americans. The question isn’t deficits, but priorities. Republicans at the state and national level want to lower taxes on the richest Americans, while cutting services to the most vulnerable. When Dr. King spoke in Washington in 1963, he spoke of the need for America to honor its promise of equality. We issue this same demand to our Congress and the administration today: A truthful analysis of today’s disparities and inequalities is needed, and a plan for remedy, investment and reconstruction. The healing will cost less than the hurt of growing gaps; the scars have become keloid. Beyond the fascination of the “dream” of a new America is the need for our leaders to honor the broken promises -- a commitment to equality and civil rights law requires enforcement and funding, less it be like tinkling brass and a sounding symbol. This is the moment to heal the breech. Let all of us celebrate. With the boldness that we attack humanitarian crises in Afghanistan and Libya, let us regain our moral authority by honoring unfulfilled promises here at home. The problem of the color line, wrote W.E. B. DuBois, is the problem of the 20th century. It will take this type of bold action to ensure that it does not remain the problem in the 21st century. NATIONAL

Keeping the Dream Alive: President Obama’s Work with the African American Community

by Michael Blake

Special to Houston Style Magazine

O

n Wednesday, April 6th, the National Action Network kicked off its 20th anniversary convention, celebrating “20 years of struggle, 20 years of progress, 20 years of shaping history.” During the day, four Cabinet members--Education Secretary Duncan, Attorney General Holder, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan-spoke to convention attendees about how the Obama Administration has been working with the African American community. That night, President Obama spoke at the Keepers of the Dream Awards Gala. The President shared how we are building upon a new foundation to ensure that we are winning the future through job

the pathway to our long-term economic prosperity. He spoke words from his heart of how public service can help people: “Yes, we have a ways to go to address unemployment and housing, but if we work together, we can get to another of King’s beloved mountaintops and promised lands.” While the night was filled with memorable moments, the one that stuck with me was sitting next to my mom, Hilary Lawrence, a breast cancer survivor who went from no house in Jamaica to helping me work at the White House in D.C. My mom and my loving dad did

so much to pave the way for me. To sit there as the Director of African American Outreach and experience this with her was one of those revelation moments where I reflected on the past and am so grateful for the future. On the same day, we launched a new website-Winning the Future: President Obama and the African American Community www.whitehouse.gov/africanamerican. This website will allow for people to better understand how the Obama Administration’s policies and work have benefited the African American community, from minority-owned businesses having more access to capital, to the benefits of health reform that are improving the lives of all Americans. We hope you’ll find the new site useful!

SPORTS

One-on-One with Dick Vitale

By Gwen B. Johnson Sports Writer

W

hen it comes to basketball, 71-year-old college basketball legend, Dick Vitale can o u t l a s t anyone…Well, not exactly on the hardwood, but his schedule is non-stop to rival that energizer bunny. During the 2011 NCAA Final Four in Houston, Vitale was on a mission for mankind. From helping to raise money for Houston’s ProVision Academy, participating in speaking engagements and pregame segments f o r ESPN, sharing his microphone with Make-A-Wish youth, to the coveted Final Four game day analysis with the crew, he charismatically was spreading wisdom all over the Space City in record fashion. Houston Style caught up with the “dapper one” to reflect upon his career. Style: Why is College Basketball so special? VITALE: I Love the Passion and Spirit for the game. It fits my personality, excitement, energy!!! Style: Where does the passion come from? VITALE: Sense of pride, students playing for their schools; College is about playing for whose name is on the front of the jersey and in the NBA, the athletes play for whose name is on the back of the jersey… Style: How have you managed to last at one network for 30+ years? VITALE: Passion for the game, enthusiasm and energy—and I take great pride in preparation. Style: What is your best memory at ESPN? VITALE: They had a celebration on the ESPN Campus for my Basketball Hall of Fame induction and seeing everyone there to support me brought me to tears. Style: Any thoughts about underclassmen going pro? VITALE: Certain kids with one stroke of the pen can change their families’ lives forever, so I can’t blame them for wanting to help their families. Do I like them

going early? Absolutely not, I think it hurts the college game. I would love to see a rule that once an athlete commits to college, they should be required to stay for 3 years before going pro. Style: Relative to basketball, what is your greatest accomplishment? VITALE: The Hall of Fame induction is the ultimate honor. Style: What is your lowest point? VITALE: Fear of cancer when I had surgery on my throat. I was down as can be, but I got lucky that it wasn’t cancer; I feel good right now— Who knows what tomorrow will bring. Style: Your contract w/ ESPN ends in 2013, how many Final Fours do you think are left in your tank? VITALE: Well, no one knows, I’m taking it one day at a time…. Style: How special was Jimmy Valvano? VITALE: Jimmy V’ was incredible…However his legacy is not the 1983 National Championship (North Carolina State defeat of the University of Houston), but his legacy is of his Hall of Famer Dick Vitale affect on countless lives and the V’ Foundation raising over $100-million toward cancer research for individuals battling the disease. Style Note: Dick annually hosts a gala to benefit the V’ Foundation. Style: Reflecting on the 1983 Final Four, Dick proclaimed: VITALE: “I want to add that I think it is absurd that Guy V. Lewis (University of Houston’s coach 1956--86) is not in the Hall of Fame, what an injustice.” Style: How do you want to be remembered? VITALE: That I loved people and treated them with respect. Style: Do you have any words of encouragement to young athletes? VITALE: Have a sense of pride, be respectful and do not forget who helped you to succeed. Tell those people you love them and remember to say thank you.…and then Vitale is off on another mission in the Space City— taking it one day at a time. Dickie V’, always Classy and always Awesome Babieeee!

Texas Southern University Launching Urban Academic Village with $2.74 Million Funding from Houston Endowment

H

ouston Endowment has awarded a $2.74 million grant to Texas Southern University (TSU) to conduct a pilot study of the University’s new Urban Academic Village, a freshman and sophomore enhancement program to improve retention and increase graduation rates. “The support of Houston Endowment allows us to begin this critical study, which is the bedrock of our changing undergraduate program,” said TSU President John M. Rudley. “The results we obtain from this pilot study over the next twoand-a-half years will allow us to fully develop new academic enhancement services and revamp the undergraduate experience for all of our students going forward. “We are particularly grateful to Houston Endowment for their endorsement of this important program and of the changes that have taken place at Texas Southern over the past 3 years,” Rudley said. “Houston Endowment is glad to assist Texas Southern University as it commits to improve the academic success of its undergraduate students,” said Houston Endowment President Larry R. Faulkner. “President Rudley has chosen an ambitious, thoughtful approach toward this central concern of any university.” To prepare Texas Southern freshmen to pursue their degree plan to graduation, the University’s new Urban Academic Village is a holistic, student-centered, 24/7 academic community approach concerned with the academic performance, mental well-being, emotional stability and personal growth of freshmen and sophomore students on campus. Research has shown that students are most vulnerable to dropping out of college in the first and second years with 75 percent of college dropouts occurring between the freshman and sophomore years. This national data has proved true at Texas Southern which currently sees nearly a third of all freshmen leaving at the end of the first year. In addition to providing students with enhanced academic services, the Urban Academic Village will provide an array of activities intended to amplify student engagement. Programs that improve student engage-

ment with their peers, faculty and the broader university community have been shown to have a positive effect on academic success and degree completion. The pilot program will renovate an existing residence hall to provide 24/7 academic support, institute new intervention and evaluation programs, and develop additional tutoring, mentoring and extra-curricular programming to better integrate freshmen into campus life. The plan calls for redesigning an existing residence hall to add expanded common areas, computer labs, and faculty and counselor apartments providing 24/7 faculty and staff support for 400 incoming freshmen. During spring 2011 the university will review best retention and student success practices from across the country to develop the full enhancement program that will launch in August 2011. The program will begin fully next fall with approximately 1/3 of the 2011 freshman class living in the new hall and receiving enhanced academic support and intervention as needed. These students will be closely tracked through their sophomore year with additional support systems being instituted as they transition from the freshman residence hall community into the larger TSU campus. Lessons learned from the first year will be implemented with the second group of freshmen entering in fall 2012. Dr. Sunny Ohia, TSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, is overseeing the project. The grant will cover $1 million in renovations for the residence hall and $1.74 million to develop and implement the academic enhancement and evaluation programs. All students participating in the pilot will be full-time students who meet

TSU President Dr. John Rudley with TSU students Jaleesa Westbrook, Sade Ogunmakin, and Kitrina Craft during a break between classes. . .

the basic admissions requirements to attend Texas Southern. The students will commit to continuing as full-time students and to participating in all enhancement and outreach activities throughout the two years of the study. A total of 800 students will participate in the pilot program and their progress will be tracked through their sophomore year. Their grades, retention and persistence data will be monitored and compared to the rest of the 2011 and 2012 freshman classes.

ber’s musical Cats puts the words of the poems to music and allows a combination of music, singing, and dancing to tell the story. Throughout the production songs such as “Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” and “The Naming of Cats” introduced the cast and the various types of cats they portrayed to the audience. “Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer” is a cute song by two mischievous, almost identical cats that like to disrupt the lives of humans. “Old Deuteronomy,” a song about the Jellicle patriarch who seemed to have 9 lives; tells the tribe which cat will go to Heaviside Layer. One of the songs that is really memorable is “Memory.” Actress Kathryn Holtkamp as cat Grizabella sang this song wonderfully. Her clear, crisp voice sounded so pure in the Hobby Center. The actors and actresses were not the only stars on the stage. Their costumes grabbed just as much attention. Hats off to costume designer Tony Ray Hicks and his team. No detail was

missed in the elaborate way each cat’s costume was designed. This added believability to the characters as the cats they were portraying. Also enhancing the realness of the costumes were the cat-like movements of the actors. On their hands and knees they didn’t just crawl. They arched their backs and demonstrated other movements in sneaky and quiet ways that were quick and precise. Cat lovers and cat haters will like this production. I, for example, am not and have never been a lover of cats but I had a pleasant time at this show. I recommend this production if you are a lover of musical theater. Now if a production with dialogue is more your cup of tea, I suggest that you choose another Hobby Center production to attend. Cats, the musical, runs now through April 17, 2011, at the Hobby Center. Tickets range in price from $26.50 to $78.00. Find out more information online at www.thehobbycenter.org.

Reigning Over Tiger Land:

Who Will Be the Next Miss TSU? By Jo-Carolyn Goode Editor-at-Large

A

long the tiger walk on the campus of Texas Southern University (TSU) many students set their eyes on graduation. Before that wonderful day comes they discover their true selves in the mist of the big city that surrounds the campus. Untapped talents of leadership and confidence levels are nurtured to grow. As they take bold steps toward their future destinies they are forging their presence in the historic world of tiger land. Thirteen young women are on the path of establishing their legacy at TSU by vying for one of the most prestigious roles a student may have - that of being Miss Texas Southern University. A long lineage of distinguished women have had the honor of being crowned Miss TSU. “It was an honor and a privilege to be able to represent the student body,” said Regina H. Carrington, Miss TSU 1973-1974. “It is a title that is forever with you.” Carrington till this day still supports the Miss TSU Pageant by making herself available when she can to attend the affair and lending her support to the reigning queen. Miss TSU 2004-2005 Zakiya Larry reflected on the huge responsibility the titleholder has. “Miss TSU is not a figure head. She is not only a role model but she literally is there to bridge a gap between the students, the Student Government Association, and the administration.” Larry told of how students confided in her and that helped her to be able to speak on their behalf and fight for them when issues arose. “It created a closer community.” The reigning Miss TSU is senior accounting major Denise Anderson-Alexander. The future certified public accountant has aspirations of becoming a United Nations Representative, human rights activist attorney, social entrepreneur and philanthropist. Already heavily involved in campus activities before her reign began, she added more activities promoting her platform as Miss TSU. During her tenure her platform was promoting action toward the pursing of individual passion while empowering discipline in education, so that the two will inspire successful and meaningful careers.” Ultimately she helped the student body to commit to education and embrace the

passions of their dreams. Each one of the thirteen beautiful, ambitious women are hoping to follow in AndersonAlexander’s shoes. One of these thirteen candidates related that she wanted to be Miss TSU “to promote positivity amongst the students on campus, present a

new positive face for students, and be a positive influential role model for students.” Holding on to the same maroon and gray dream are competitors Brittany M. Adams, Allyson Arnold, Troi Bingham, Latrease N Brown, Lamarria Coleman, Artishia Connally, Kelsee Eggleston, Lashay

Earth Day Deficit Plan Addresses Overspending of Nature’s Budget

T

he American Budget is not the only one overspent and in need of a deficit plan. We are using far more resources than the Earth can provide. For starters, we are eating too much, wasting too much, using too much water and energy, overusing chemicals, polluting the air, land and water and as a result we are in a global ecological overshoot. To slow down this ecological deficit and help accelerate the environmental movement, this year’s Earth Day theme is A Billion Acts of Green®. This campaign calls for people of all nationalities around the world to commit to an act of environmental service

to support sustainability and create a healthier oneplanet future. Each year, Earth Day -- April 22 -- marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and the establishment of the Earth Day Network (EDN) followed that first Earth Day. Now more than 1 billion people in 192 countries participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. Earth Day is next Friday so make plans now to generate as many acts as possible in your com-

munity and submit them to be added in the Billion Acts of Green®. Collectively, these acts will not only have an impact on global carbon emissions, but will also demonstrate the power of small every-day individual acts of green. As an added bonus, many of these acts promote a healthier lifestyle they can get you moving, eating better, breathing cleaner air and lessen your exposure to cancer promoting chemicals. The act can range from a simple gesture to an immense proj-

ect. Whatever the act, it all counts. Here are a few ideas: • Eat a plantarian, vegetarian or vegan diet ~or~ simply eat less meat • Walk, bike or take public transportation to work or other destinations • Shop with reusable bags (grocery, clothing, household, etc.) • Support f a r m e r ’s markets and get fresh, local, seasonal food • Do laundry in cold water • Change out light bulbs to energy efficient florescent bulbs

“Before There Was Mozart” by Lesa Cline-Ransome and James E. Ransome

any, many years from now, you’re going to be a majorleague ball player. Or a concert pianist, maybe a ballerina, or a singer with a band. That’s because you spend a lot of time practicing. Though it’s sometimes hard and not always fun, practice makes perfect and you want to be as perfect as possible when you’re a ball player, pianist, ballerina, or singer. Throughout his life, a young boy named Joseph practiced his violin, but only when he wasn’t exploring. In the new book “Before There Was Mozart: The Story of Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de SaintGeorge” by Lesa Cline-Ransome and

seph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-George - was known as a talented violinist. As Joseph grew, he loved the violin more and more. He started composing and performing: unknowingly, before Wolfgang Mozart, and later – fulfilling the prophesy made the day he was born - as the first man of color at the royal palace for the king and queen of France. If you go looking for this book and you should – you’ll probably find it in the picture book section of your library or bookstore. It might be ill-placed there, however. Author Lesa Cline-Ransome and illustrator James E. Ransome have dusted off an amazing story that even adults can appreciate, but I fear that the narrative is too sophisticated for toddlers, who gravitate toward picture books. Surely, “Before There Was Mozart” can be enjoyed by them – the illustrations are colorful, and very little-kid-friendly - but children old enough to understand history, classical music, and this tale’s significance will probably like it more. Overall, this is a beautiful and important book, but just beware for whom you bring it home. Small children may

James E. Ransome, you’ll read a story that’s somewhat hidden by history. It was breezy on Christmas Day 1739, and the slaves who worked the sugar fields were preparing to celebrate the holiday. But up in the main house, the owner of the West Indies plantation was awaiting the birth of a child… The baby was named Joseph because it was Christmas, and the midwife predicted that someday, he’d meet the king and queen of France. Joseph’s mother, Nanon, a slave born in Senegal, was just happy that the boy was healthy. On the plantation, Joseph loved to play with other slave children, even though he was not one of them. As the only child of a slave and her master, he wasn’t made to work; instead, he was allowed to wander the island and explore, and when Joseph’s mother went to town, he usually went along. It was in town that he fell in love with music. But life wasn’t all play. Monsieur Plato, the plantation’s overseer, was also Joseph’s tutor, and Monsieur ended each lesson with violin practice. By the time he was nine years old and had immigrated to France with his parents, Joseph – whose father eventually gave him the name of Jo-

Medium 160°F • You can sear the lamb roast first in a hot 450°F oven for 15 minutes to seal in the juices and then reduce oven temp to 325°F and continue roasting for approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until internal temperature reaches 5 to 10 degrees less than your desired temperature. • Remove roast from oven and let rest for 20 minutes before serving. This allows the meat’s juices to settle and make carving easier. (As the meat rests, the internal temperature will rise 5 to 10 degrees.) • Carve the roast against the grain so the meat will be tender. Example: Citrus-based sauce and a lemony, lightly oaked Chardonnay (such as Kendall-Jackson Avant Chardonnay or Chablis from the Burgundy region of France). Example: Mushrooms with the earthy flavors of Pinot Noir. • CONTRAST. Contrasting flavors balance each other. Example: Spicy foods and sweet wines, such as Thai food and an off-dry Riesling. Example: Salty foods and crisp, high-acid wines such as Sauvignon Blanc or Champagne. • MATCH the TENOR. Match a food’s weight and intensity to similar elements in wine. Example: Delicately flavored foods call for delicate varieties of wine, such as Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc. Example: Weighty textures and intense flavors are a better match for more powerful wines, such as matching herb-crusted roast lamb with a robust Syrah or Merlot.

exas Instruments said late Monday that it has agreed to buy rival National Semiconductor for $6.5 billion in cash.

The deal would make Texas Instruments one of the world’s largest makers of analog technology components, which are used to convert real-world information, like sounds, into digital signals. Under the terms of the deal, Texas Instruments will pay $25 a share for National Semiconductor -- an 80% premium to National Semiconductor’s share price of $14.07 as of Monday’s close. Texas Instruments said it will fund the deal through a combination of cash on hand and company-issued debt. To read more go to stylemagazine. com.

n March 31, 2001, nationally renowned ESPN basketball sportscaster Dick Vitale lent his voice and energy to a worthy cause while here in Houston for the NCAA Final Four Tournament. He – along with ESPN basketball analyst Jay Bilas and former Houston Rockets Coach and current ESPN sportscaster, Jeff Van Gundy – headlined Pro-Vision’s Final

Pro-Vision’s Final Four Kick-Off Event

Four Kick-Off fundraising event benefiting Pro-Vision’s operations. Pro-Vision is a non-profit organization which operates, among other programs, the Pro-Vision Middle School and the Vision Academy (high school) on its 21acre campus in the Sunnyside community. Founded in 1990, Pro-Vision, opened the first single-gender public school in Texas in 1995. Since the beginning it has offered young men from Houston’s most underserved neighborhoods the guidance and support they need to realize their full potential academically, morally, and spiritually. According to its Founder, former Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro Roynell Young, “The young men who enroll in Pro-Vision’s schools and programs are those who are the most vulnerable to the negative forces that continue to undermine entire communities, not just here but throughout our country.” Mr. Young continued by saying, “The fact that Dick, Jeff, Jay and others lent their voices, influence and resources to help us in this fashion speaks volumes both about their personal character as well as their compassion for making a difference in the lives of young men whose thanks they may never hear.” The event, which featured exclusive analysis of the Final Four NCAA Tournament teams just before they took center court at Houston’s Reliant Stadium, was held at the Jerabeck Athletic Center on the campus of the University of St. Thomas. Pro-Vision is located at 4590 Wilmington, Houston, TX 77051. For more information on this event or Pro-Vision’s school and programs visit www.provision-inc.org or call 713748-0030.

Inc., a subsidiary of ESPN, and Meineke Car Care Centers announce a three year title sponsorship deal of the Te x a s

Bowl, beginning for the 2011 event. The Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas will be played in December on an ESPN network at Reliant Stadium in Houston – home to the NFL’s Houston Texans. The annual game will match up the Big 12 versus the Big Ten. In 2010, Illinois beat Baylor 38-14 on Dec. 29 at Reliant Stadium, and with 68,211 fans had its second-highest attended game in bowl history. A “We are proud to have a company which began in Houston return and become the title sponsor of the new Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas,” said Clint Overby, ESPN Senior Director of Events. “The strong brand presence of Meineke combined with the football history in Texas makes this a natural partnership.” Meineke is one of the most recognized and trusted auto service brands in America since its establishment 39 years ago. It was founded by Sam Meineke of Houston, Texas, who built the brand on the concept of quality products and workmanship at a fair price. Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Meineke Car Care Centers now offer a comprehensive range of repair and maintenance services and has grown to over 950 locally owned and operated franchised service centers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and China. “For the past six years the Meineke brand has benefitted tremendously from its sponsorship of a College Football Bowl,” said Ken Walker, Chairman and CEO, “and we are delighted to continue this tradition by returning to our roots in Houston, Texas”. “It excites our Franchisees and it heightens Meineke’s awareness among the passionate and loyal fans of College Football across the country.” The event, which is owned and operated by ERT, is managed locally by Lone Star Sports & Entertainment.
