onald Trump, the real estate mogul, has risen to the top of the Republican presidential candidate ratings while campaigning on the nutty charge that President Obama isn’t American, that he is not legally qualified to be president. The Trump effect has led others, like Sarah Palin, to start hedging their dismissal of these absurdities. If this continues, the Republican race could turn into a race for the muck. America deserves better. Jobs are short; wages aren’t keep-

ing up; home values keep falling. The banks are doing fine, but people are still losing their homes. The rich are paying fewer taxes while the poor pay more fees. The middle class is getting crushed. Good jobs are still shipped abroad, replaced, if at all, by lower-wage work. There is now more student loan debt owed in America than credit card debt. We need a serious debate about what we do to get out of this hole. At the federal and state level, furious debates have begun. Conservative legislators and governors are pushing to cut taxes on the rich and on corporations, even as they slash support for schools
and health care. With gas rising over $4 a gallon, conservatives return to their “drill, baby, drill” position, while liberals call for accelerating the transition to renewable energy. We need a vigorous debate about what our strategy is and should be. Donald Trump made a fortune in real estate. He presumably would have much to say about how we deal with our debt, handle the continuing housing crisis, or develop a high-end manufacturing strategy that works. He likely has serious views about energy policy, and certainly about whether we should raise or lower taxes on the wealthy. Instead of entering that debate, he’s riding a toxic wave by emitting poisonous charges he must know are not true. This nonsense about Obama’s birth is one of various efforts to label the president as un-American, as alien. Some say he’s not a Christian, but a Muslim. COMMENTARY
H
aving hesitated to fully enter the fiscal fray, President Obama has at last delivered a plausible, principled response to the budgetary flimflams of the far right. But one speech, even a very good speech, won’t fulfill his obligation in this fateful argument. What Obama began to do this week is what Democrats ought to have been doing forcefully for many weeks, which is to ensure that Americans understand the central differences between Democratic and Republican budgeting -- and how the party’s contrasting programs would affect them and their families. While acknowledging the need to bring the federal budget closer to balance in coming years, the president laid down real markers concerning how that objective should and should not be achieved. It should not be done, he said, by raising the costs of medical care beyond affordability for most of the nation’s elderly, as the Republican assault on Medicare would eventually do. It should not be done by slashing programs that assist the nation’s poor and vulnerable. And it cannot be done at the expense of future generations, by vandalizing the nation’s infrastructure through neglect or depriving the nation’s children of educational opportunity. It must be done instead, said the president, in ways that reflect American traditions of fairness (which in bygone days were once honored by the leaders of the Republican Party, who now disdain them). It must demand the most from those who have benefited most, rather than treating them to still more tax cuts. It must restore the standards that made America the leader of the world in education, research and public investment ever since the Second World War, rather than accelerating our decline. As expected, Obama the politician sought to position himself as close to the center (and independent voters) as he could, by reminding Democrats and progressives that the rapidly rising cost of health care is unsustainable -- and that the concept of “shared sacrifice” doesn’t
Democrats Can Win the Budget Debate
exempt anyone’s priorities, including his and theirs. As usual, he gave away too much before the negotiating process has even started. Yet the president and his political advisers clearly feel that they must establish credibility as budget balancers if they are to prevail. Bill Clinton began his presidency by confronting the Republican legacy of deficits with higher taxes and lower expenditures, but Obama had no realistic choice other than to increase spending substantially -- or let the country and the world sink into depression. Now, from the president’s point of view, he is bargaining from a weakened position and has no choice but to emphasize cutbacks over revenue. Polls still show, however, that the public agrees with Obama on the most important issues, from preserving Medicare and Social Security entitlements to raising taxes on the wealthy to investing in education, the environment and infrastructure. Very few outside the most dogmatic precincts of the Republican Party believe that the richest of the rich need additional tax cuts, or that such cuts should take priority over food stamps and Medicaid. Is that an “excessively partisan” or “dramatically inaccurate” way to describe the Republican fiscal philosophy, as House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan complained so bitterly in his rejoiner to Obama’s speech? Is the president’s plan “hopelessly inadequate,” as Ryan said, when compared with his own ever-changing, wildly phony “path to prosperity”? Ryan’s angry response has opened up the possibility of a debate that the country desperately needs. Let us hope that Obama doesn’t shrink from that challenge or delegate it to someone else. If his presidency is to become anything but the prelude to an era of decline, he must keep pushing forward just as aggressively as the Republicans push backward. When is a Cold Not Just a Cold?
F
or parents, trying to determine whether to take a child who is experiencing the signs of a cold to the doctor can be a regular occurrence. From runny noses to
ear infections, kids can pass illnesses back and forth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that children have about two to nine illnesses per year, nearly double the number of colds adolescents and adults experience during the same timeframe. But when are those coughs and stuffed noses more than just a routine cold, and at what point do parents need to pay extra attention and take their children to the doctor? Knowing how to recognize when your children need medical attention can help keep them healthy and prevent stressful emergency trips to the doctor or hospital. While many parents will call their doctor if their child has a fever, it is important to recognize that a fever is not the only sign of an illness that needs immediate medical attention. Other symptoms can include difficulty breathing, vomiting, excessive irritability, lack of appetite, severe headache and refusal to eat or drink. Primary Immunodeficiency Parents should also be mindful of rare and serious diseases. One such condition is primary immunodeficiency (PI). PI is a group of more than 150 disorders, genetic in nature, that affect the cells, tissues and organs of the immune system. For the estimated 10 million people worldwide who are living with PI, the immune system is either deficient or functioning inadequately, leaving them with greater susceptibility to infection. A Family’s Journey to a Proper Diagnosis Eric Nixon has three children who
have been diagnosed with PI. His oldest son experienced many of the signs and symptoms of primary immunodeficiency for more than a decade before receiving an accurate diagnosis at age 11. “For the first 11 years of my son’s life, we went from specialist to specialist with ear infections, sinus infections, pneumonia and other illnesses that would keep coming back,” said Nixon. “We were often told he only had a cold and we were being too cautious, but we knew typical children should not be this sick this often. Eventually we visited an immunologist who diagnosed him with primary immunodeficiency. Since then, my other children were tested and also diagnosed with the same condition.” With his children constantly ill, Nixon and his family had to schedule their lives around the many doctor and specialist appointments. These visits, combined with the kids’ recurrent illnesses, meant that the family was unable to go on vacations, and the children would frequently miss school, birthday parties and other childhood activities. Finding an Appropriate Treatment In 2010, all three children transitioned to a new, innovative subcutaneous (i.e., under the skin) immunoglobulin (SCIg) called Hizentra®, (Immune Globulin Subcutaneous [Human], 20% Liquid). Hizentra, developed by CSL Behring, is the first and only 20 percent SCIg indicated for the treatment of primary humoral immunodeficiency. Because Hizentra can be stored at room temperature for its 30-month shelf life, Nixon’s children are able to administer their therapy at home or on the road and are not limited to a doctor’s office. “We can fit Hizentra around our schedules, which helps my children lead more typical, active lives,” Nixon added. “Because the product is portable and convenient, we can now go on family vacations and my kids don’t have to miss activities with their friends because of their treatment schedule.” Trusting a Parent’s Instinct In 2010, The Lancet published a study that a parent’s instinct regarding their child’s health is usually spot on. Nixon couldn’t agree more. “Doctors accused us of being overcautious, but we knew something was wrong and are glad we followed our instinct.” In addition to following their gut, parents should call their child’s doctor if symptoms worsen, even if the kids have recently seen the physician, or if their child is frequently ill.

billions of dollars that could be put to much better use. Annual prison spending has risen from $10 billion to $52 billion over the last thirty years. Recent data from the Pew Center on the States shows that the additional money is clearly not going to prisoner rehabilitation efforts. More than 40 percent of inmates eventually return to prison, most of them within three years. The recidivism rate hasn’t changed much in a decade and is a strong sign that prisons aren’t doing the best job they can to prepare offenders for life outside of prison. States around the country are grappling with fiscal uncertainty

and are forced to cut programs that serve the poor and elderly in order to balance their budgets. These tactics, however, do not take into consideration the needs of the people, nor do they protect the long-term financial health of the state. What does? Investing in education. Many, if not the m a j o r i t y, of prison inmates did not graduate high school. By catching students before they fall through the cracks and reducing the number of dropouts will, over time, reduce the prison population and save the states money. Sending
low-level drug offenders to rehab instead of prison will also
help. It’s less expensive to rehabilitate an addict than it is to incarcerate them. Going this route allows states to help those who need it and reduce their prison costs at the same time. Critics would say that
this approach is soft on crime. No one is saying that criminals should not be punished. It’s just more beneficial to everyone involved if we punish them smartly. T o be fair, this strategy is not going to save money overnight. The goal is to create a plan that is sustainable, one that will bring huge returns over the long term. Reducing prison costs by reducing incarceration rates saves money so governments don’t have to cut services like Medicaid and Medicare that the most vulnerable in our communities rely upon.

ou are a very strong woman. You can do anything you want, go anywhere you want, and say what you’re feeling. You know where you’re heading because you’ve focused totally on the goal. Nobody messes with a woman like you, and few can tame you. That never stops them from trying, though. In the new book “She’s The One” by J.J. Murray, a movie director taps into a diva’s ego to help his brother capture the wildest woman he’s ever known. There was just one word to describe Katharina Minola: spoiled. Fifteen years ago, Katharina was snatched from obscurity into world-wide

fame after starring in the movie My Honey Love. Critics loved the movie. Fans couldn’t get enough of Katharina. Everybody adored her. But that was before a series of total flops and public tantrums, several staff members who were decimated by her temper, and some business deals gone wrong. That got Katharina blackballed all over Hollywood, but she was too spoiled to admit it. None of that mattered to Vincenzo Lucentio, the CEO of Lucentio Pictures. Years ago, when My Honey Love was filmed, Vincenzo’s brother, Pietro, had a bit part in the movie and he’d fallen in love with Katharina. For years, Pietro had stewed about his crush on the diva, and Vincenzo finally decided that it was time to push the two of them together. With an ego like Katharina’s, though, he had to be careful. The best way to get her where he wanted her was to offer Katharina a movie deal, but this wasn’t a normal movie. The contract offered Katharina $5 million, script approval, and a dozen other perks. Katharina signed the contract and told her beleaguered assistant, Bian-
ca, to pack her entire huge wardrobe. Vincenzo had himself a diva. High up in Northern Quebec, Canada, Pietro was preparing a remote cabin for his brother’s movie company. No electricity, no hot water, no food, and no cell phones were allowed in this cabin because the unknown (to Pietro) actress was going to learn to live off the land in a method-acting kind of way. He had his doubts about that. No woman he’d ever known could handle the northern Canada wilderness. He couldn’t wait to see who this spoiled diva was… Based “loosely” on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”, “She’s the One” is 336 pages of mixture. In the beginning, this novel is very slow. Author J.J. Murray sets the tone of his story early, but it’s ploddingly over-killed. Fortunately, it quickly picks up the pace, becomes comedic and rompish, and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Murray made me glad I stuck around. Glad, at least, until near the end of this book when it descended into a confusing silliness that ruined the romp. I felt as if I’d gotten whiplash. I wished I’d stopped reading 30 pages from the finish.

Celebrate Easter with Cookie Pops Now the decorating fun begins. Pipe with melted candy to make spirals and stripes, then attach confetti sprinkles. Other decorating options include brushing with pearl dust for a luminous effect, or sprinkling with colored sugars. You could even write messages on them. After decorating, use a dab of melted candy to attach the “pops” stick to the backs of the cookies. A decorated flower “pot” is an ideal way to present the pops. Verizon Sells 2.2 Million iPhones
erizon announced that it activated 2.2 million iPhones during the quarter, helping the company more than triple its profit from a year ago. The wireless division of telecom giant began selling the iPhone on Feb. 10. Ve r i z o n only sold the iPhone 4 for 50 days during the quarter, compared to the full 90 days of the quarter that Apple’s smartphone sold on rival AT&T’s network. But Verizon was on pace to sell 4 million iPhones over a 90 day period, compared to the 3.6 million that AT&T sold during the quarter. Verizon said it added 906,000 customers under contract during the quarter. By contrast, AT&T added just 62,000. Some analysts said that suggests Verizon is attracting subscribers thanks to the new iPhone, while AT&T is mainly selling iPhones to its existing customers who are due for an upgrade to a new handset. He took on the role of associate vice president of corporate development in 2008 and later became associate vice president of information technology in 2009. The former marine has been serving as METRO’s acting vice president of information technology since last year. “Having had the opportunity to observe Randy at work in his acting capacity, I feel confident that he will continue in his new role to render the support service needed for us to do our job of providing safe, reliable, convenient and affordable transit service,” said George Greanias, METRO president & CEO.
