COMMENTARY
Biden’s Inauguration Offers New Hope and New Energy By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
n Monday, we marked Dr. Martin Luther King’s 91st birthday; on Wednesday, Joe Biden will be inaugurated as president, promising change after a dark period of division. Dr. King’s relationship with John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson offers instructive lessons for today’s movement for justice. Kennedy, inaugurated after eight years of Republican Dwight Eisenhower, brought new energy to Washington. Kennedy favored action on civil rights but was terribly worried that trying to move a civil rights bill would get in the way of the rest of his legislative agenda. During his campaign, his call to Coretta Scott King when Dr. King was jailed, helped him capture immense Black support in a razor-thin election. Yet, he was wary of King, unhappy that King and the movement kept demonstrating and forcing change. King appreciated Kennedy but understood the conflicting pressures he faced. The movement continued independently. The Freedom Riders in Montgomery, the dogs and water cannons in Birmingham, the sit-in in Jackson forced Kennedy to act. Even then the legislation - and much of Kennedy’s agenda - was stuck in the legislature. K e n n e d y ’s a s s a s s i n a t i o n brought Lyndon Johnson, the master of the Senate, to the presidency. Johnson decided to push civil rights legislation and put his enormous skills behind passing it. King conferred with Johnson and helped put pressure on legislators who were reluctant. King wasn’t simply
4
interested in protest; he wanted a change in policy and was prepared to work with LBJ to get it. Johnson, like Kennedy, was wary of King. He often besmirched him in private, angry that King would not stop the demonstrations. Again, the movement - this time the dramatic scenes at Selma - forced action, and Johnson rose to the moment, leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. The collaboration of Johnson and King, however, soon ended. The Watts Riot angered Johnson who thought blacks should be grateful for what he had done. When Dr. King went public with his opposition to the Vietnam War, the relationship was severed. The FBI under J Edgar Hoover continued its efforts to discredit and intimidate King. Today the situation is different. Black voters were critical to Biden’s election victory. He chose Kamala Harris as his vice president. He has reaffirmed his commitment to criminal justice reform, to addressing the continued disparities in education, housing, health care and opportunity. What African Americans still seek is an even playing field. On economic justice issues, our agenda speaks to all: the right to a job, the right to health care, the right to a high-quality education, retirement security. To drive reform, the lessons of the 1960’s still apply. The movement for justice must continue to organize nonviolent protest, challenging the entrenched systemic racism that still pervades our institutions. It must continue to build, as Dr.
January 21 – January 27, 2021
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King did, a poor people’s campaign across lines of race and region. The movement can’t follow Biden’s timetable; it must continue to build on its own agenda. There should be no reluctance to work with Biden to help pass critical reforms, but at the same time, the pressure for outside must continue to build for there to be any hope of change. The 1960s offer another caution: the war on poverty, the progress on civil rights, was lost in the jungles of Vietnam, as that war consumed resources and attention as well as lives. While Biden’s domestic pledges offer hope, he inherits a country mired in endless wars and gearing up for a new cold war with both Russia and China. Once more, follies abroad may sap the energy needed to rebuild at home. Once more, the movement for justice must not be silent about the administration’s priorities. Biden’s inauguration offers new hope and new energy. He inherits severe

crises - the pandemic, mass unemployment, extreme inequality, the climate crisis, racial upheaval. He’ll need all the help he can get. And the best way the movement can help is to keep on keeping on.

Texas Democrats On The Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Inauguration By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

exas Democrats are ecstatic Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been inaugurated as the President
Dr. Carla Brailey – Vice Chair Texas Democratic Party and Vice President of the United States. But today is not simply a win for Democrats. Today we celebrate as Americans. After a difficult and dark four years, we have proven that our democracy has held, that the arc of justice bends
towards the good, and that we are on the path to restoring the soul of our nation. “As stated by Joe Biden, ‘it was never his nor Donald Trump’s place to declare a winner of the 2020 presidential election, that is a decision of the American people,’ and today our democracy rang loud as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were inaugurated. “It’s time to get to work. There are challenges facing both Texas and the United States, challenges that we can only get through together. President Biden and Vice President Harris will immediately start undoing the incredibly cruel policies of the previous Administration.”
Texas Democratic Party Vice Chair Dr. Carla Brailey issued the following statement: “Americans across the state and country are celebrating Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ historic inauguration. The past four years have been very dark for our country. We are as divided as ever, but today’s win is a step toward the healing of our nation and unifying. “As a woman of color, the his-

he White House announced early Wednesday that President Donald Trump has granted a pardon to rapper Lil Wayne and a commutation to rapper Kodak Black, two of the raft of pardons and commutations on his final day in office. “President Trump granted a full pardon to Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., also known as ‘Lil Wayne,’” the statement from White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany read. “Mr. Carter pled guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, owing to a conviction over 10 years ago. Brett Berish of Sovereign Brands, who supports a pardon for Mr. Carter, describes him as ‘trustworthy, kind-hearted and generous.’” “Mr. Carter has exhibited this generosity through commitment to a variety of charities, including donations to research hospitals and a host of foodbanks. Deion Sanders, who also wrote in support of this pardon, calls Mr. Wayne ‘a provider for his family, a friend to many, a man of faith, a natural giver to the less fortunate, a waymaker, [and] a game changer.’” The decisions mark another example of Trump rewarding someone he perceives as loyal. Trump, who has been largely lambasted by Hollywood during

Lil Wayne his tenure in office, has relished praise from celebrities and is rewarding the rapper, also known as Dwayne Carter, who expressed support for his campaign in the final days of the 2020 campaign. Lil Wayne, a multi-platinum artist and record label founder who has won five Grammys, pleaded guilty to illegal gun possession on December 11, 2020, after a December 2019 arrest, and was facing up to 10 years in federal prison as he awaited his sentencing later this month. The guilty plea came weeks

after he met with Trump in Miami, Florida, to discuss the President’s “platinum plan” aimed at courting Black voters days before the election. “Just had a great meeting with @realdonaldtrump,” Lil Wayne said in a tweet after the October 29 meeting, posting a photo alongside Trump, both men smiling with thumbs up. He added, “Besides what he’s done so far with criminal reform, the platinum plan is going to give the community real ownership. He listened to what we had to say today and assured

toric victory of having our first female Vice President-elect, as well as our first black Vice President-elect, brings tears of joy as we have fought centuries for this moment. A historic coalition of voters, led by Black women, have saved our democracy by going to the polls and fighting back against Republican voter suppression in spite of a global pandemic, toxic misinformation, and horrifying scare tactics. “America today is back on the path to being the land of opportunity, of advancement and of progress for all people and creeds. Americans cannot wait for President Biden and Vice President Harris to get to work to provide relief to millions of Americans who are suffering from this pandemic, who are out of work, who lack access to affordable health care. “Today is a truly momentous occasion and I congratulate all who helped this moment become reality. America is back on track. We couldn’t be more-proud today of President Biden and Vice President Harris. It is time to get to work.”

he will and can get it done.” The meeting was set up after Carter’s team reached out to the White House, press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said. Like Trump, who called the Black Lives Matter movement a “symbol of hate” and railed against nationwide protests amid a national reckoning on systemic racism, Lil Wayne has a controversial history of his own remarks on social justice, telling ABC News in 2016 that he did not feel connected to the Black Lives Matter movement. “I don’t feel connected to a damn thing that ain’t got nothin’ to do with me,” he said at the time. Lil Wayne had been charged with criminal possession of a firearm and ammunition as a prior felony offender. Prosecutors said the gold-plated, .45-caliber handgun carried in a bag on a private flight was loaded. He was arrested in December 2019 as he arrived on a flight from California at the Opa Locka Executive Airport near Miami. Officers spoke with the rapper, who told them that he had a gun in his bag, officials said. He had previously pleaded guilty in October 2009 to a felony gun charge as part of a deal with New York prosecutors. That charge stemmed from his arrest in 2007 outside of New York City’s Beacon Theater in which a .40-caliber pistol was found on his tour bus. He accepted a plea agreement and was sentenced to a year in prison, serving eight months before being released. www.StyleMagazine.com

It’s our reality right now. But it won’t be if we do what it takes to beat COVID-19. Vaccines are coming, but until enough of us are vaccinated, we all still need to wear our masks, stay at least six feet from others, and avoid indoor social gatherings. manda Gorman, the nation’s first-ever youth poet laureate, challenged Americans Wednesday to “leave behind a country better than the one we were left” and unify together as she delivered a stirring inauguration poem. Speaking at a US Capitol that just two weeks ago was the site of a harrowing attempt to overthrow American democracy, Gorman bridged the violence of January 6 with the anguish felt by so many Americans of color but described the country as ready to begin anew under President Joe Biden. “We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it,” the 22-year-old Gorman said, a reference to the deadly insurrection that, as she told CNN last week, was a catalyzing inspiration for her poem. “Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. And this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.” Clad in a yellow coat and punctuating her words with her hands, Gorman nodded not only to the perilous political moment but also the history and promise of a day on which Kamala Harris became the first woman, first Black person and the first South Asian to be elected vice president of the US. “Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, but simply unfinished. We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming President, only to find herself reciting for one,” the 22-year-old Gorman said in her poem, entitled, “The Hill We Climb.” “We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it,” Gorman recited, a reference to the deadly insurrection at the US Capitol that, as she told CNN last week, was a catalyzing inspiration for her poem. “Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. And this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.” Gorman, who regularly draws from current political events in her work, spoke passionately Wednesday about the need for social change: “We learned that quiet isn’t always peace, and the norms and notions of what ‘just is’ isn’t always justice.”
Amanda Gorman Calls On America To “Leave Behind A Country Better Than The One We Were Left” In Powerful Poem By Chandelis Duster, www.CNN.com / www.StyleMagazine.com
Amanda Gorman – First-Ever Youth Poet Laureate “We are striving to forge our union with purpose. To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man,” Gorman said. “And so we lift our gaze, not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms
so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none and harmony for all.” Gorman was wearing a ring with a caged bird, which was symbolic of Maya Angelou, who wrote “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and recited a poem at President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. The ring was a gift from none other than Oprah Winfrey, the young poet revealed on Twitter Wednesday afternoon. Born and raised in Los Angeles by a single-mother and 6th-grade English teacher, Gorman started writing poems when she was a child, but found it terrifying to perform due to a speech impediment. She overcame that fear by drawing confidence from former President Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr., and practices songs from the Broadway musical “Hamilton.” She previously told CNN that she drew inspiration for the poem from the two poems read at Barack Obama’s inauguration -- Richard Blanco’s 2013 “One Today” and Elizabeth Alexander’s 2009 “Praise Song for the Day” -- and writers, like Walt Whitman and Frederick Douglass, whom she feels have spoken to the ideals of a nation. She was halfway through writing the inauguration poem when she saw the Capitol riot, and she previously told CNN she would attempt to “communicate a message of joining together and crossing divides.”

ayor Sylvester Turner released the following statement today as Gov. Greg Abbott hosted a roundtable discussion to provide a COVID-19 update to select Houston healthcare professionals. “We welcome Governor Abbott to Houston today. Houston is the largest city in Texas and America without Medicaid Expansion, meaning that the public health infrastructure will face extremely difficult challenges in assisting vulnerable communities when it comes to vaccinations. With so many families without primary healthcare coverage, all levels of government must work together to serve our shared constituents. “The Houston Health Department has been working tirelessly to vaccinate Houstonians. Both Houston Health and Harris County Public Health have the experience and a lot of insight to offer regarding vaccine distribution. We must work as a team and seek to be as inclusive as possible to get the job done.”

President Joe Biden Takes Executive Action On Day One H With The Stroke Of His Pen By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com
Madam Vice President – Kamala Harris President – Joe Biden
E
very president has their own agenda with their pressing issues in rank order. Each one comes to the office ready to get to work immediately but they do take time to enjoy the spoils of their inauguration participating in parades, attending countless balls, and taking in every unbelievable moment as it sinks in that they are the leader of the free world. However, Joe Biden didn’t have that luxury. He had the misfortune to have to fix everything that Donald Trump destroyed immediately while also executing his own agenda to make America better. Never before has a president come into office with so many problems and so much pressure to do what is right in government and what is right by the citizens of the country. Good thing is this is something Biden knew when he declared his candidacy and its something that he has prepared for taking executive action on his first day in office. On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, Joseph R. Biden raised his right hand with his left hand on his 100 year plus family Bible to take the oath of office to be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States of America. After the pomp and circumstances and his presidential address with the blueprint to build better, he participated in a few ceremonial activities and made the short trip to the oval office to get to work signing 17 executive orders, rolling out a huge stimulus plan and a new immigration bill. Biden has said his first days in office will concentrate on four major challenges plaguing America: 1. the pandemic 2. Racism and inequality 3. Economy 4. Climate change Executive Order #1 – Rejoining the Paris Climate Accord
In 2015, over 180 countries met together to adopt the Paris Climate Accord to protect the planet. Each country was expected to reduce their carbon footprint on the world by decreasing their carbon emissions by every five years. Under the Barack Obama administration, the United States entered the agreement in September 2016 with the goal of reducing their emissions by 26-28% by 2025. Donald Trump pulled the U.S out of the agreement in November 2019. On January 20th, Joe Biden plans to rejoin the U.S. with the agreement with the goal of reaching 100% clean electricity generation by 2035 with a $2 trillion climate plan. (This is a good call for the U.S. to join the Paris Climate Accord because it would result in a healthier, happier for generations to come.)

First Lady – Dr. Jill Biden Executive Order #2 – Ending Travel Ban on Muslim Countries
Executive Order #5 – 100 Days Masking Challenge
In an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, Trump enacted a travel ban in 2017 to stop noncitizens from entering the U.S. after having visited Europe, Brazil, and mostly predominated Muslim countries. The ban was struck down twice by federal judges but upheld by the Supreme Court who said Trump was within his authority as president to act in that matter. Trump has recently those travel restrictions since the Center for Diseases Control now requires all passengers to present a negative COVID test before boarding. Biden plans to extend travel restrictions. (This is a good call for the U.S. since the number of people getting COVID is still on the rise. Plus, there is a new strand of COVID first seen abroad. So anything that can be down to slow the spread is welcomed news.)
The COVID-19 virus is still making its way through communities resulting in tons of diagnosis, overcrowded hospitals, worn out doctors and nurses, and crushed families. Biden knows Americans have been told how to stop the spread but some still choose not to follow the rules. One his executive orders would to try to appeal to all American to wear the mask for mask mandate. The mandated would include wearing a mask a requirement while on federal property and interstate travel. (This is good call by Biden to stop the spread of COVID. It is also good to see your top leader wear a mask and care whether you live or die. We need drastic measures to rid COVID if my world.)
Executive Order #3 – Halting Evictions and Foreclosures One in five are behind in rent according to the U.S. Census that is about 40 million people who might be evicted if not for the government’s help. Renters are getting a nervous because Congress only gave renter relief through Jan.31. Biden will extend the eviction and foreclosure moratorium to Sept. 30. Funds would come from his $1.9 trillion COVID-economic relief proposal. (This would e a good call for the U.S. since it would give housing stability to so many low-income individuals and families.) Executive Order #4 – Student Loan Freeze Trump halted student loan payments through 2020. He terminated federal subsidized student loans and put limits on federal PLUS loans. People can expect a lot of changes for student loans in 2021. Biden is expected to pause federal student loan payments including FFELP or Perkins loans. He will stop accrual of new interest on federal student loan. (This is a really good for those who struggling financially. They could use that money to pay for necessities like food and shelter. )
www.StyleMagazine.com
Executive Order #6 – Buy America Biden wants the U.S. to be one that supports each other by promoting Made in America by America’s workers. In his Buy America, Biden lays out his way in two steps. Fixing the tax code is step 1. Biden will establish an Offshoring Tax Penalty and a Biden “Made in America” Tax Credit. He wants to close Offshoring Loopholes created by Trump. Secondly, Biden will ensure the government is living up to their end of the deal by using taxpayer dollars to Buy American products and support American supply chains. (This is a good call. Buying America will build back our economy, keep the dollars at home, and support big and small businesses. It might also start a business boom with several new businesses opening.) Executive Order #7 – Rejoin the World Health Organization Biden has always been an advocate for quality. He has lofty plans to make the industry better. Some of his ideas include having the U.S. Biden will undo the decision made by Trump to withdraw the U.S. for the World Health Organization. He will restore the White House National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense. Biden will reeve up the production of masks, face shields and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to meet the needs of medical professionals and the greater public. Biden plans to increase testing sites and contract trac
H Inauguration Of President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris H
Amanda Gorman – Youth Poet Laureate ers for COVID with his pandemic testing board. (This is good call. Any and everything Biden can do stop the curve of COVID, stop people getting diagnosed, stop people from dying and stop the spread is a good call.) Executive Order #8 – Addressing Racism and Inequality Biden must find rules that will protect Black Americans. The first of these is to support H.R. 40. This bill examines the institution of slavery, its legacy, and makes recommendations for reparations to Congress. Biden will ban federal entities and contractors with training that relate to race and gender. His administration will reinstate federal guidance on nondiscriminatory school discipline that disproportionately harms students of color and students with disabilities. He wants to stop the \voluntary use of race in school admissions to achieve diversity and avoid racial isolation in elementary, secondary schools, and in postsecondary education, as outlined in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. Executive Order #9 – Reunite Children Separated From Family at Border Children separated from their families at the U.S./Mexico border by order of Trump in 2017 and 2018 will be reunited back with their families under one of Biden’s executive orders signed within his first 10 days of office. Biden will create a federal task force to reunite more than 500 children to their parents. Biden has also promised to stop prosecuting parents as Trump did for crossing the border without authorization. (This is a good call because no child should be separated from their parents unless they are being harmed.) Executive Order #10 – Create the Position of COVID-19 Response Coordinator This person will help oversee the distribution of the coronavirus vaccine and medical supplies. (This a good call for having a smooth distribution of the vaccine in an orderly fashion considering healthcare workers, the most vulnerable, and
Lady GAGA – Performed “National Anthem” all citizens. The medical supplies will, of course, help frontline workers stay with the proper PPEs.) Executive Order #11 – Cancel the Keystone XL Pipeline
Jennifer Lopez – Performed “This Land Is Your Land” lected by the Census. This information helps meet the needs of all.) Executive Order #15 – Fortify Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program
Biden will reject all permits signed over the past 4 years that do not serve the interest of the United States. This also includes the revoking the Presidential permit granted to the Keystone XL pipeline. More than 100 of Trump’s actions on the environment will be reviewed and reversed. (This decision is split. Biden’s actions will affect the U.S. relations with Canada. It will also determine the future of fossil fuels, which is a good thing.)
This program offers work permits and deportation aid for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. (This is a good call. Research has shown that DACA has positive results as increasing wages, mental health, and employment status of individuals. This is part of Biden’s immigration plan.)
Executive Order #12 Rescind 1776 Commission
Biden will halt construction of the wall and stop the flow of money Trump took from the Defense Department to fund the construction. (This is a good call. Trump made the wall construction a national emergency paid for by Americans. When, in fact, the wall was supposed be funded by Mexico. Biden will review all transaction to know where to redirect funds.)
The 1776 Commission was Trump’s answer to solve the problem he saw with school curriculum inciting violence that resulted from protests. He wanted schools to apply a more accurate view of slavery in the U.S. (This is a good call. Violence under the Trump administration was not due to school’s curriculum but due to the actions of Trump himself.) Executive Order #13 – Stop worker discrimination In an effort to be a more unified nation, Biden wants to stop discrimination of all, especially based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity. (This is a good call. Someone’s sexual orientation or gender should not be a determining factor if someone gets a job. Employers need only look at qualifications for a job.) Executive Order #14 – Requirements for Non-Citizen This order would make provisions for non-citizens to be included in the Census an appointment of congressional representatives. (This is a good call because everyone needs to be counted in the Census. So many things are determined in the place you live in by the data col-

Executive Order #16 – Halts Construction of the Border Wall
Executive Order #17 – Ethics Pledge This order is to protect the Department of Justice by making executive branch appointees accountable for their actions. (This order is good to hold people accountable for their actions and acting as a check and balance system to prevent those involve from acting in their personal interest.) Within Biden’s first ten days beyond these executive orders, Biden will also have numerous memorandas and directives.

Joe Biden’s Inaugural “We Are One” Event Celebrates The Resilience Of Black Culture And Heroism
T
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com
here are at least three times in the Holy Bible where it speaks to a divide house – Matthew 12:25, Mark 3:25, and Luke 11:17. If a house is not equal, it is not stable or solid. At the first sign of trouble, the house will crack. It cannot weather any storm. This is why a house must be unified. There is strength in numbers and most definitely strength in stability. This is the America President Joe Biden is trying to restore. This vision of America is where the country takes on problems together to work for common resolutions. The country that was a leader that others looked to as the example of what is right. This is how to build back better. President Biden ensured that his message resonated in every aspect of all inaugural activities. If unity was the main the message, diversity was the sub-message. Getting back to America’s core won’t take one party over the other. It is going to take more than one set of people or ideals. It is going to take the collective of every American – every gender, race, religion, thought, and action of all of us. We have to be one and work as one. Although it was 38 years ago when Frankie Beverly and Maze first released their classic “We Are One,” the message of the song could not be more appropriate than it is today. Having the fame band a part of the festivities was a must. Joining them on the star-studded lineup also included Leslie Jones, Stacey
Abrams, Whip Jim Clyburn, Rep. Cedric Richmond, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Joyce Beatty, Senator Cory Booker, Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock, Kim Fields, Erika Alexander, Jason George, DJ D-Nice, The O’Jays, Rhapsody, Step Afrika, the String Queens, the Texas Southern University Debate Team and more. The night was meant to honor the resilience of Black Americans by celebrating the culture and heroism. In addition, the program celebrated the commitment to unity from Blacks, Latinos, Asians, and Pacific Islanders. Also on display were Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and sororities. It is widely known about President Harris’ membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and how the sisters are her secret weapon. A big part of the history of those organizations is the HBCU campuses on which they were founded. One can’t reference HBCUS without talking about the bands that define them all. A Battle of the Band competition was added to the festivities featuring the musical sound from Florida A&M University Marching 100, Grambling State University World Famed Marching Band, Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South, Louisiana Leadership Institute All-star Marching Band, South Carolina State University Marching 101, Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band, and the Tennessee State University Aristocrat
Stacey Abrams – Speaker of Bands. Black culture has used music as both entertainment and a way of communicating thoughts for calls to act and to expressing political views. Every aspect of this program evoked the theme of unity of all cultures. In fact, all festivities of the 59th Inauguration promoted this message. President Biden has repeated this sentiment over and over. It will be the only way that we can heal from the actions of the past administration and press forward to embrace change and a future where we all have a unified front.

Lucille’s 1913, founded by Chef Chris Williams, distributed 3,000 meals to people in need on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18, 2021. The day of giving began with 2,000 meals in Fort Bend County at 11 a.m. and culminated with 1,000 meals at Pleasant Hill Village in Fifth Ward at 2 p.m. A total of 1,400 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits were distributed in Fort Bend County. Lucille’s 1913 also launched a 1,200-squarefoot community garden in Fifth Ward, where it operates a satellite kitchen. The garden will be used for garden therapy for elders of the community and will produce seasonal and colorful produce including collard greens, cabbage, swiss chard and rosemary. The event was facilitated by Lucille’s 1913 in collaboration with Fort Bend County as a new partnership with Lucille’s 1913. distribution. Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omeninu and MMA fighter Jessica Aguilar volunteered to help with meal distribution at the Fifth Ward site. Recipients remained in their cars for distribution, either popping open their trunk or lowering their passenger side back window to receive their meals. Chef’s Produce provided a refrigerated truck to keep the meals throughout the day. Covid-19 measures were in place to ensure safety among staff, volunteers and guests. Lucille’s 1913 Culinary Director Lawrence Walker teamed with Houston chefs Dawn Burrell and Dominick Lee to prepare 250 hot meals for the residents of Pleasant Hill Village. Lucille’s 1913 has donated more than 145,000 meals to Houstonians in need since the start of Covid-19, an effort primarily self-funded by Chef Chris Williams and Lucille’s. Each meal is thoughtfully created with regard to the palate of the communities which Lucille’s 1913 serves. The individually packed meals consisted of two different options on MLK Day: Smothered pork chops with mashed potatoes, gravy and collard greens in Richmond and Fifth Ward, and Bistec a la Mexicana in, with Spanish Rice and Charro beans in Rosenberg.

Once we have supply, we will activate a scheduler tool on heb.com/vaccine so people can schedule an appointment. During this first phase of Covid-19 vaccine rollout, some H-E-B pharmacies received limited
quantity of the Moderna vaccine to help vaccinate our community healthcare providers.
Many of our H-E-B Pharmacy locations are still working through waitlists for healthcare providers. We will continue to move into vaccinating people in Phase 1B when we receive more allocation of Covid-19 vaccine from the state of Texas.
