FIFA Houston, Harris County Leaders, and Committee Make Huge 500 DAYS AWAY Announcement

COMMENTARY

Donald Trump’s playbook has always been to campaign like a populist and govern like an oligarch. But it is still shocking just how brutally he went after our country’s working people in the first few days – even the first few hours –after he was sworn in last week.

Donald Trump's actions on Day One of his presidency, and each day since then, have laid bare his willingness to undermine the health and wealth of working families. He is determined to pollute our air and water. And for all his tough talk about China, he is rapidly ceding vital economic ground to China as he attempts to shutter the new factories powering our nation with clean energy. A true “America First” agenda would focus on American leadership on the global stage. And it would put the American people first. Instead, he is putting Americans’ last by sacrificing our health and our jobs in favor of corporate greed.

In the first minutes of his presidency, President Trump promised to "drill, baby, drill" in his inaugural address.

In the first hours, in a flurry of Day One executive orders, he declared an 'energy emergency' and moved to: claw back unspent Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funds; withdraw the US from the Paris Climate Agreement; overturn protections against offshore drilling for more than 625 million acres of ocean; roll back federal vehicle emission standards for cars and trucks; halt the development of all offshore wind projects; remove vital protections for public lands across Alaska … and, sadly, that was just the beginning.

Making our communities more susceptible to climate-fueled disasters, driving up respiratory and heart disease, increasing our energy bills, and shipping our jobs overseas is the opposite of “America First.” And

TRUMP’S AMERICA LAST AGENDA IS A KNIFE IN THE BACK OF WORKING PEOPLE

it shows Trump breaking his promises – ON DAY ONE! – to stand up for working-class families.

As you read this, the Trump administration is actively working to boost Americans’ household energy costs by promoting the expansion of LNG (liquified natural gas) exports. Those exports go to nations that will pay far more than the domestic market rate for methane gas, driving up prices here at home. And, of course, more methane gas means more fracking, more pollution, and more disaster-prone transportation and refinement of yet another dirty fossil fuel. (Not to mention the national security implications

of LNG producers and exporters selling this energy resource to adversaries like China that then can re-sell it to client states and leverage their status as an LNG supplier.)

The administration is driving up energy costs and threatening grid reliability – in an age of increasing extreme weather from climate change – with its hostility to the clean energy sources that are cheaper and more resilient than fossil fuels.

It is killing thousands upon thousands of good American jobs with actions like his executive order banning more development of offshore wind energy. So much for the GOP’s “all of the above” energy

approach. Wind energy now makes up 10% of US electricity generation and offshore wind alone currently employs 120,000 Americans. New offshore wind projects would promise many thousands more. And offshore wind has also helped revitalize domestic supply chains, support growth in American shipping, and bring in billions of dollars in investment.

The administration is killing jobs by attacking the progress and investments spurred by the last administration’s Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which have already created more than 400,000 clean energy jobs.

The fossil fuel push will lead to pollution that causes heart attacks, asthma attacks, cancer, and more – and will end up killing many of the very people he pledged to fight for. It also will have an especially deadly impact in the communities that already suffer disproportionately from pollution. A recent Stanford Medicine study, for instance, found that Black Americans are far more likely to die from air pollution-related causes than other groups. This bears out in a city like Chicago, where the city’s West Side, which has more Black and Latino residents than other parts of the city, has up to 32% more nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution.

And one more way this administration looks to hurt both the wallets and bodies of working families is with the rising cost of healthcare that all the illness from increased air and water pollution is sure to bring.

In these dark times, it is critical to remember that we are strong enough as a country to keep making progress no matter who is president. As I've seen firsthand from the frontlines of the civil rights and environmental movements, when the American people suffer setbacks, when the hill gets steeper, we do not stop climbing.

In a moment of history and hope, Charlene Ward Johnson took the oath of office on January 14th, marking the beginning of her journey as Texas State Representative for District 139. With a district stretching from Loop 610 near Ella to FM 1960, encompassing the heart of Acres Homes, Rep. Johnson steps into the storied halls of the Texas Legislature, bringing with her a lifetime of commitment to education, civic engagement, and community empowerment.

A Leader Rooted in Service

Though a newcomer to Texas lawmaking, Johnson is no stranger to public service. Her tenure as a Houston Community College Board Trustee showcased her dedication to education and workforce development. Now, she takes her experience from boardrooms to the House floor, prepared to advocate for a district as diverse as it is dynamic.

“I may be an outsider just now elected to the inside when it comes to Texas politics and policymaking,” she said with enthusiasm, “but I’ve been involved in volunteering, voting issues, public education, and community advocacy in Houston almost all my life.”

STATE: Rep. Charlene Ward Johnson: A Trailblazing Start in the Texas Legislature

Burt & Sandra Levine with Texas Rep - Charlene Johnson

Inspired by a Legacy of Leadership

Born and raised in Temple, Texas, Johnson’s foundation in service was shaped by her parents, who served in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood. The values of commitment, duty, and advocacy became the cornerstone of her mission.

But it was a visit to Houston in the 1980s that set her path in motion. Attending a cousin’s graduation, she heard a speech by then-State Representative Sylvester Turner, a fellow Acres Homes native who rose to prominence as Houston’s mayor and now serves as U.S. Representative.

“I was so inspired by his journey—

from graduating at the top of his class to leading at the University of Houston—that I knew I wanted to follow a similar path,” Johnson recalled. “I wanted to be a part of Houston’s future.”

True to that dream, she graduated from the University of Houston in 1991 and never looked back. Now, she proudly holds the same legislative seat Turner occupied for 27 years, making history as the first woman to represent Texas House District 139.

Championing the Needs of District 139

Johnson steps into her role

with the weight of representation on her shoulders—not just for more than 202,000 constituents, but also for a district defined by diversity and resilience:

44% Hispanic

37% African American

13.4% White

7% Asian

She understands the urgent needs of her community, from education and job training to infrastructure improvements in aging neighborhoods. Public education, in particular, remains a battleground, as Texas leadership continues to challenge funding for public schools and community colleges.

“This district needs strong advocacy,” she asserted. “We must ensure our children have the skills to succeed in an economy where education is under attack. We also need major infrastructure investments—from water and sewer systems to roads and bridges—to support our communities.”

In a monumental stride for empowering minority business owners, Congressman Al Green has once again proven why he’s a beacon of hope for social and economic justice. Through his Minority Business Resiliency Act of 2021, codified within the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of the same year, the Minority

NATIONAL : Congressman Al Green Champions $11 Million Opportunity for Minority Entrepreneurs

Business Development Agency (MBDA) now stands as a permanent federal agency dedicated to the advancement of minority enterprises. This victory has unlocked unprecedented opportunities, including the announcement of $11 million in funding, poised to transform the entrepreneurial landscape.

On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the MBDA unveiled three groundbreaking technical assistance programs aimed at supporting socially and economically disadvantaged entrepreneurs. These programs are not just initiatives—they’re lifelines designed to uplift underrepresented communities:

- The MBDA Women’s Entrepreneurship Program – Fueling the dreams of minority women entrepreneurs.

- The MBDA Rural Business Center Program – Driving innovation and growth in underserved rural areas.

- The MBDA Parren J. Mitchell Entrepreneurship Education Program – Honoring a legacy of resilience and excellence by equipping minority entrepreneurs with essential tools for success.

“This funding is an investment in the economic security of our nation’s minority business enterprises,” Congressman Green declared with unwavering conviction. “This opportunity

represents exactly why the MBDA’s establishment as a permanent agency was so important. I am gratified to see the MBDA continuing to fulfill its mission, and I eagerly look forward to the disbursement of these funds.”

Why This Matters: An Economic Game Changer

In a world where access to capital and resources often determines the success of a business, these programs are a game changer. They embody the essence of equity by addressing the systemic challenges faced by minority entrepreneurs. By investing in women, rural business owners, and education, the MBDA ensures that opportunities are no longer a privilege but a right.

Houston, as a hub of diversity and innovation, is uniquely positioned to benefit from these programs. The city’s minority entrepreneurs—whether launching startups or scaling established enterprises—now have a golden opportunity to take their ventures to the next level. The MBDA’s initiative is more than just funding; it’s a declaration that every dream, regardless of origin, deserves a fighting chance.

LOCAL: Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee Stands Firm Against Trump’s Federal Funds Freeze In a Battle for Harris County, Menefee Fights for Justice While Trump Plays Politics

Once again, former President Donald J. Trump is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, using federal funding as a political weapon. This time, Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee is taking a stand—determined to ensure that the hardworking residents of Harris County are not pawns in Trump’s latest act of extremism.

Trump’s administration recently issued a sweeping freeze on federal grants and loans, a reckless decision that threatens to derail funding for public safety, infrastructure, healthcare, and

education—the lifelines of thriving communities like Harris County. But unlike some who shy away from holding the former president accountable, Christian Menefee refuses to back down.

“Trump does not have the legal authority to withhold funds that have already been approved by Congress. This is nothing more than a political stunt that directly harms the people of Harris County,” Menefee declared. “Our residents rely on these funds for everything from flood control projects to healthcare access. Harris County families should not suffer because

of Trump’s radical agenda.”

A Political Power Play with Devastating Consequences

The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), following Trump’s directive, has issued an order for all federal agencies to halt the disbursement of federal financial assistance. This unprecedented move affects billions of dollars earmarked for local governments across the nation—particularly in Democratic strongholds like Harris County.

While Trump’s team attempts to downplay the severity of the freeze, the reality is stark: Harris County is on the verge of losing hundreds of millions in critical funding, with no guarantee that these funds will ever be restored.

“This is government overreach at its worst,” Menefee emphasized. “For Trump, this is about flexing his power, but for families in Houston and across Harris County, this is about survival. Public health, disaster relief, law enforcement, and transportation—all of these are on the chopping block because of Trump’s arrogance.”

Legal Action Looms: Harris County Fights Back

Christian Menefee, the youngest and

first Black Harris County Attorney, has been a relentless advocate for justice, accountability, and the protection of local resources. Now, he is leading the charge in potential legal action against the Trump administration, joining forces with attorneys general from states such as New York and Illinois.

“We are actively exploring all legal avenues to stop this unlawful freeze. Trump cannot ignore the Constitution or the rule of law just because he thinks he’s still calling the shots,” said Menefee.

Legal experts argue that the Constitution and federal law clearly state that once Congress allocates funds, the executive branch does not have the power to withhold them arbitrarily. Trump's move is being widely condemned as a political ploy designed to punish local governments that refuse to bow to his far-right agenda.

A Nationwide Backlash

Harris County is not alone in this battle. Across the nation, civil rights organizations, nonprofit groups, and state governments are preparing to take Trump to court. '

Houstonians Demand Justice: Green and Turner Call Out Discriminatory Disaster Relief Failures HUD’s Findings On GLO Discrimination Spark Outrage

The fight for equitable disaster relief took center stage on Wednesday, as Congressman Al Green (TX-09) and Congressman Sylvester Turner (TX-18), alongside Texas Housers and community leaders, addressed the shocking revelations of racial discrimination in the Texas General Land Office’s (GLO) handling of Hurricane Harvey recovery funds

The press conference , held at Congressman Green’s Houston District Office, was a rallying cry for justice and accountability in the wake of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) findings that the GLO intentionally discriminated against Black and Hispanic communities in allocating Community Development Block Grant Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) funds

The Fallout from HUD’s Findings

HUD’s report, now referred to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), paints a damning picture:

• The GLO’s allocation process prioritized white communities, leaving Houston, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Corpus Christi—areas hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey—without any funding from the $1.1 billion disaster relief package.

• Communities of color were systematically sidelined despite clear evidence of severe storm damage and urgent need

Congressman Al Green did not hold back:

“For too long, equitable access to recovery resources has been wittingly or unwittingly withheld from communities of color, leaving these communities struggling to recover. The DOJ must act on HUD’s findings to correct this gross injustice. This is not just about policy—it is about lives, homes, and the fundamental right to recover after a disaster.”

Trump Administration’s DOJ Freezes Civil Rights Actions

However, a chilling development has cast doubt on whether justice will be served. The Trump administration’s DOJ issued an order on January 22, 2025, instructing its Civil Rights Division not to file any new complaints, amicus briefs, or other court actions until further notice. This politically motivated blockade threatens to leave affected communities without a path to justice, effectively shielding the GLO from accountability

Congressman Sylvester Turner underscored the urgency of the situation:

“How can we call ourselves a nation of justice when discriminatory policies go unchecked? The people of Houston are still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, and this administration’s inaction is a direct attack on their future.”

A Call to Action: Houston’s Leaders and Community Stand Firm

Despite the federal roadblocks, Houston’s leaders refuse to back down. The press conference featured voices from grassroots organizations, including Julia Orduña of Texas Housers, Doris Brown of Northeast Action Collective (NAC), and Carolyn Rivera, a community leader and impacted resident

Ms. Rivera, who still struggles with the aftermath of flood damage and displacement, shared her personal frustration:

“We fought to rebuild after Harvey, but now we have to fight again—this time against our own government. It’s unacceptable that Houston’s most vulnerable communities were left out.”

What’s Next? Pressuring DOJ for Action

With HUD’s findings now sitting in the hands of the Trump-controlled DOJ, advocacy efforts are shifting towards public pressure. Houston’s Congressional delegation, along with legal and civil rights groups, plan to mobilize communities, amplify voices, and demand action

Congressman Green urged Houstonians to stay engaged:

“We cannot allow this injustice to go unchallenged. Call your representatives, demand action, and remind the DOJ that justice delayed is justice denied.”

Final Thoughts: Houston Must Lead the Charge for Equity

Readers of Houston Style Magazine, the blatant neglect of Black and Hispanic communities in disaster relief funding is a stark reminder of systemic inequalities that persist under the Trump administration.

However, Houston’s leaders and residents are not backing down. From Capitol Hill to community town halls, the

fight for fair and just recovery funding continues.

Sisters Network® Inc. Relaunches Teens4Pink® Program with a Game-Changing Mobile App

January, 27, 2025, Houston, TX – Sisters Network® Inc. (SNI), the nation’s only African American breast cancer survivorship organization with over 25 survivor-run affiliate chapters, has taken its groundbreaking Teens4Pink® program to the next level. With the unveiling of an innovative mobile app, now available nationwide on Apple and Google Play, the organization is amplifying its mission to educate and empower teens aged 12 to 17 to spark life-changing conversations about breast health within their families.

First introduced in 2013, Teens4Pink® was designed with a clear vision: to bridge generational gaps and foster critical discussions about breast cancer. The newly

launched app brings this mission to life by equipping teens with accessible tools and resources to encourage open communication with their mothers, grandmothers, and other beloved women. The app shines a spotlight on early detection, family health history, and the importance of regular mammograms— all while inspiring young advocates to take the reins in reshaping the breast health narrative within their communities.

Why This Program Matters

Breast cancer impacts one in eight women in the United States, with an estimated 310,720 new invasive cases projected in 2024 alone. Disturbingly, Black women are 42% more likely to die from breast cancer

than their white counterparts, with those under 35 facing even graver disparities— diagnosed at double the rate and dying at three times the rate of white women.

Teens4Pink® addresses these stark realities with a unique and proactive approach, empowering young people to challenge these inequities head-on. By reaching the next generation, this program plants seeds of awareness and action that can save lives for years to come.

Expanding the Conversation

"The relaunch of Teens4Pink® represents an exciting leap forward in engaging teens to become breast health advocates," shared Karen E. Jackson, Founder and CEO of Sisters Network® Inc. "This mobile app is more than a tool; it’s a catalyst for change, equipping young people to champion breast health awareness and action for the women they cherish most."

Sisters Network® Inc. has once again teamed up with Eisai Inc., a founding supporter of the program since 2013. "As a company committed to improving human health, Eisai is proud to support Teens4Pink® as it evolves to meet the needs of today’s digital generation," said Teresa Cronin, Vice President of Corporate Communications and Patient Advocacy at Eisai Inc. "Programs like these are

vital for addressing disparities in care and empowering communities with the knowledge and tools to act."

Download the App and Join the Movement Generously backed by Eisai Inc., the Teens4Pink® mobile app is now available for download on Apple and Google Play. This digital expansion ensures that the life-saving message of breast health can reach every corner of the country, providing young advocates with the resources they need to lead impactful conversations in their families and beyond.

While life expectancy is increasing for some Black women, it still lags behind that of their white female counterparts. This disparity raises important questions: why is this happening, and how can we address it?

According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, researchers suggest that younger Black women are more likely to suffer from diseases that predominantly affect white women later in life. Disturbingly, new data indicates that Black women are dying at younger ages. The silver lining? Many of these leading health threats are preventable—if we know how to take action.

Here’s a breakdown of the top conditions threatening Black women’s health and actionable steps to combat them:

1. Heart Disease

Heart disease is not just a "man's disease"; it’s a significant threat to women’s health, especially Black women. The risks are higher, but the good news is that lifestyle changes can make a huge difference.

How to Protect Your Heart:

Quit Smoking: If you smoke or use tobacco, seek support to quit. Avoid secondhand smoke, too.

Eat Heart-Healthy Foods: Focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins while minimizing saturated fats

TRAVEL : Love, Fredericksburg: A Journey Through History, Wine, and Hill Country Charm

Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country is a cute little German town called Fredericksburg, which offers an inviting blend of rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking scenery. As part of the town’s new “Love, Fredericksburg” campaign, visitors are encouraged to embrace its charm and explore the many facets that make it a must-visit and a beloved destination. Founded in 1846 by German settlers, Fredericksburg has preserved much of its Old-World heritage, and you’ll find it very evident in its architecture, cuisine, and vibrant festivals. This picturesque town, known for its wineries, boutique shopping, and enchanting landscapes, serves as both a retreat and a celebration of Texas' German roots. Whether strolling down Main Street, sampling local wines, or hiking the nearby Enchanted Rock, there’s something for everyone to fall in love with in Fredericksburg.

In this article, I'll explore the unique experiences that make Fredericksburg a must-visit, offering a taste of the community’s deep pride and love for its heritage and natural beauty.

During my stay in Fredericksburg, I had the pleasure of experiencing the warm hospitality of The Gathering by Porch Light Hospitality. Nestled amid the natural beauty of Texas Hill Country, this quaint property offers the perfect blend of luxury and comfort. The Gathering provides a serene retreat for those seeking a peaceful escape with all the modern conveniences.

With spacious rooms, thoughtfully curated interiors, and beautiful outdoor spaces, it's an ideal place to unwind after a day of exploring, just as I did. Guests can

enjoy the property's rustic yet refined ambiance, perfect for relaxing with coffee on the porch or sharing a glass of wine under the stars in your hot tub! To book your stay at this charming getaway, visit Porch Light Hospitality’s website and reserve your slice of tranquility in the heart of Hill Country. Looking forward, Fredericksburg’s accommodations will soon expand with the grand opening of the much-anticipated Albert Hotel. This boutique hotel, which opened on January 3, 2025, is set to become a new icon of luxury in Fredericksburg. It will offer guests an elevated experience that blends the town’s historic charm with modern elegance. The Albert Hotel is poised to deliver upscale amenities and a prime location in the heart of downtown, making it the perfect spot for leisure and business travelers.

If you plan a future visit to Fredericksburg, you can start making reservations at the Albert Hotel by visiting alberthotel. com. Be among the first to experience this exciting new addition to Fredericksburg’s already impressive lineup of accommodations.

As I continued my journey through Fredericksburg, I couldn’t help but feel the deep connection to this town’s history, natural beauty, and sense of community, perfectly captured by the “Love, Fredericksburg” initiative. I had visited this area years ago, and although I loved it then, I felt it was more so driven by the popular wine destination it has become (which isn’t a bad thing either), but every adventure this time around seemed to invite me to explore, appreciate, and, reconnect with what this charming destination offers.

One of the most memorable outdoor adventures was hiking Enchanted Rock, a massive pink granite dome that looms majestically over the surrounding landscape. The hike was challenging (so bring your water) but rewarding, with panoramic views of Texas Hill Country that left me in awe. Standing atop the rock, I could see why Fredericksburg is so proud of its natural wonders.

Back in town, I took a Historic

Fredericksburg District Tour with Fredericksburg Tours, which gave me a new appreciation for the town’s rich German heritage. As you wander through the streets, you can’t help but notice the well-preserved 19th-century buildings that line the historic district, many of which have been lovingly restored to their original beauty. From the Sunday Houses, quaint cottages once used by farmers who traveled into town for supplies and church services, to the iconic Vereins Kirche, a round structure that served as both a community meeting hall and place of worship, every building tells a story of Fredericksburg's early settlers.

The tour also highlighted landmarks like the Fredericksburg Pioneer

Memorial Library, originally the old courthouse, and the Kammlah House, a former trading post that now forms part of the Pioneer Museum Complex. Walking through these sites gives a vivid sense of how the town's German founders laid down roots and built a community that still thrives today. It’s easy to see why “Love, Fredericksburg” emphasizes honoring this history, it’s a crucial part of what makes Fredericksburg so unique.

No visit to Fredericksburg would be complete without some time to stroll along Main Street, where boutique shops, local eateries, and artisan goods capture the heart of the town. I spent an afternoon leisurely exploring, appreciating how the “Love, Fredericksburg” campaign encourages visitors to savor these simple yet enriching experiences that connect them to the town’s soul.

Each of these experiences, from outdoor adventures to historical tours and shopping, reflects Fredericksburg's deep pride in sharing its history and natural

beauty with the world.

Of course, no trip to Fredericksburg is complete without indulging in what the area is famous for—wine! As part of the “Love, Fredericksburg” campaign, the town’s wineries invite you to experience the heart of Texas Hill Country’s wine scene. With countless vineyards dotting the landscape, two stood out during my visit: Meierstone Vineyards and Airis’Ele Vineyards.

Meierstone Vineyards, set against the picturesque backdrop of rolling hills, is a family-owned gem since 1846 (the family was amongst some of the first German settlers) known for its intimate atmosphere and award-winning wines. Their Tempranillo and Viognier are crowd favorites, offering a rich and flavorful expression of Texas terroir.

What makes Meierstone a must-visit is not only the quality of its wines but also the peaceful setting of its tasting room, which blends rustic charm with modern elegance. Sitting on the outdoor patio, surrounded by vineyards, you get a true sense of Fredericksburg’s wine country.

Next, I ventured to Airis’Ele Vineyards, a boutique vineyard with a passion for producing small-batch, handcrafted wines. Their Sangiovese and Petite Sirah stood out, offering bold, vibrant flavors that encapsulate the essence of Hill Country. The tasting room at Airis’Ele exudes a contemporary, welcoming vibe with stunning views of the vineyard, making it an ideal spot to savor a glass of wine while taking in the scenery. Conveniently located near the main wine trail, this vineyard makes it easy to incorporate into any wine-tasting itinerary.
