o w s h o u l d D r. M a r t i n Luther King Jr.’s birthday be celebrated? It should be celebrated in many different ways. Dr. King was an intellectual who reflected seriously and critically on the dilemma facing AfricanAmericans, people of color generally and poor people specifically -- of all races. He was also an activist. He didn’t get bogged down in the paralysis of analysis. The choices he saw available to the oppressed were threefold: The first option was to respond to institutional violence with violence. But he didn’t see that as moral, practical or able to really address and solve their problems. In fact, he saw it as counterproductive. Secondly, the poor and people of color could just endure injustice and essentially do nothing. Again, he didn’t see that as moral or practical, and he thought that such repression

urrounded by family and friends, Jarvis Johnson was sworn in as State Representative for House District 139 succeeding Mayor Sylvester Turner. Shortly after swearing to represent the people of his district, Johnson hit the ground running listening to his constituents of north Houston at open houses and community forums. He acted on addressing their concerns by filling 17 bills to achieve results. “I thank my family, friends, and supporters that came to the Capitol Tuesday, January 10th, to take part in the Legislature’s 85th inaugural ceremony. It was without a doubt a fantastic moment for all. It means everything to me to be in Texas’ House, the People’s House, as the voice for those in the community where I grew up and have lived all my life,” said Johnson who raised his family, built businesses, and has been active in youth, church, senior citizen and chamber of commerce activities in the area. “In Texas, unlike most states, the Legislature meets only 140 days every two years. From early January through May 29, 150 representatives from across Texas (each representing about 179,000 people) and 31 senators (each representing about 800,000 people) meet each odd year to agree to a budget, enact the laws of this state and broad policies for the next two years,” said the former three-term District B Houston City Council Member. Johnson will focus on K-12

would eventually explode into violence. The final choice, the one he recommended, was nonviolent active resistance. He brought thought and action together morally and practically as the best way to bring about structural change. Dr. King’s birthday also allows us to hold up a mirror and reflect on the nation’s commitment to human rights, democracy and justice. Dr. King believed in human rights for all human beings, and he believed that it should be measured by one yardstick. He believed people should and could learn to live together and find the joy and benefit of such diversity. These benefits are all around us in sports, entertainment, the press, business, our work places and the professions. This mixture of ideas, experiences and perspectives helps all of us to grow, see and feel things we never have thought, saw or felt before. When Clemson and Alabama played for the national college football championship, whites and blacks played harmoniously together and fans cheered side-by-side. Both Southern teams had black quarterbacks. In many ways it was the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bowl. He knew that we had learned to survive apart, but he challenged us to do a much harder and more gratifying thing: to learn to live

together. I shall never forget our SCLC staff meeting and being with Dr. King on his last birthday. He had convened Native Americans, Appalachian whites, blacks from the Deep South, Latinos from Texas and California, Jewish allies from New York and others to work on the Poor People’s Campaign. Why poverty? He certainly struggled and suffered to advance a racial agenda -- the 1964 Civil Rights Act to bring down the cotton curtain of legal apartheid in the South and the 1965 Voting Rights Act to allow African-Americans to vote without discrimination. But he saw the crisis as deeper than merely race. He also saw caste, which was the moral and economic common ground where black, brown, yellow, red and white, male and female, could fight together for the common good. He believed poverty was a weapon of human destruction. He saw the War in Vietnam stealing resources from the War on Poverty at home. He was planning a Poor Peoples’ Campaign to challenge the nation to choose bread over bombs. He argued that a bomb dropped in Vietnam was exploding in urban America because of neglect of the poor. Dr. King wanted a floor beneath the poor that no American

would fall below. He saw that the keys to peace and tranquility were economic security, jobs, education, health care, housing, justice and mercy. Beyond analyzing the problem, Dr. King was acting. He and we were putting our bodies on the line -- that is, we were willing to be beaten, die and go to jail, and we went many times. We were demanding that Congress choose healing at home over killing abroad. D r. K i n g w o u l d b e heartbroken to see the top priority of the new administration is making affordable health care harder to get, focusing on “law and order” over justice, advocating a nuclear build-up rather than continuing the reduction of nuclear weapons, and promoting incivility in our politics over civility and civil and human rights. Our challenge today is to not let Dr. King’s rationality and action die. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush. org. education, higher education, criminal justice, police accountability, mental health, child welfare and juvenile justice. The bills Johnson’s filed are centered on K-12 education. He’s pushing HB 310 for school guidance counseling programs. HB 315 offers grants for education services for students not in state schools but other residential treatment facilities. Another bill will amend the public school funding formula for those with a disability. More people will gain skills for jobs as a result of HB 374 that will provide career and technology training opportunities. HB 795 will help ISDs appeal to Texas Education Agency (TEA) rulings. HB 313 to allow the University of Houston to benefit from the oil and gas based Permanent Education (PUF) Fund. HB 430 to alter Texas’ higher education funding formula to offer $500 to universities based on the number of students that earn bachelor degrees and $1,000 bonuses for at-risk student that earns a bachelor degree. Johnson filed HB 312 to establish a Disaster Recovery Fund to relieve the fiscal burden placed on local communities during times of disaster. Johnson filed HB 625 to require biannual psychological exams for police officers. Remembering Sandra Bland, he filed HB 567 to prohibit police from arresting individuals for minor offenses. That bill is further supported with HB 814 to prohibit police from searching a private vehicle without probable cause, written or recorded consent from

the vehicle operator. HB 603 will require physical fitness testing for police. H B 3 0 9 will provide home and communitybased services for people with severe and persistent mental illness to prevent them from destabilizing or continuing in the criminal justice, emergency services and mental hospital systems when more appropriate service levels could better serve. The state and Johnson (c) counties will also benefit by saving important funds. H B 2 8 7 will strengthen protections for children in the care of state. HB 596 will ensure children removed from their homes and placed in Permanent Managing Conservatorship have the same rights to state appointed guardians or Ad Litem Attorneys as those in Temporary Managing Conservatorship. HB 314 will ensure prioritization occurs for reading at grade level and prepares children for the general education development test. It also will provide funds to divert youth from state juvenile correctional and adult correctional systems. He will also fight for HB 932 to require an annual report from the Department of Juvenile Justice concerning the number of offenders who

My staff and I’ll be the most accessible imaginable to those that put me here to keep me accountable,” Johnson said. “I’m ready to serve all HD 139. hether juggling the demands of a career, a growing family or even both, it’s nearly impossible to find a healthy balance between between work and home but us women are resilient and we seem to be able to accomplish the task with stride. We take risks each and every day; risks to create and build the life we want to lead. Venturing out into entrepreneurship is a difficult decision, requiring tenacity as well as the ability to accept that failure is, at times, inevitable. However, when our dreams come to fruition and it is successful, what an amazing feeling of accomplishment! For entrepreneur and speaker Nicole Coleman it’s a path that came unexpectedly after a sudden illness landed her in the ER. Faced with the possibility of her mortality, Coleman decided to transform a lingering idea into reality. Turning fear and uncertainty into strength, Coleman decided to make it her mission to encourage and inspire others and from there the concept of becoming “SuperBOLD” was born. Now, that idea has blossomed into a movement, as Coleman prepares to deliver the first inaugural SuperBOLD Women’s Empowerment Brunch, a celebration of like-minded women united by the desire to succeed and create an innovative network of ideas. Set to take place during this year’s Super Bowl XVI frenzy, on February 3rd, Coleman’s event will take over Houston’s famed St. Regis Hotel. Taking time out of her increasingly packed schedule, Coleman discussed with Houston Style her journey and her inspiration for the highly anticipated empowerment event. Warm and determined, she explained, “I’m just excited about this journey and for

the people that I connect with along the way. Knowing that people are rooting for you makes you want to not drop the ball. There’s no task too great that can prevent what God has for you.” Turning a Potential Tragedy Into Motivation: While I was in the ER I got motivated to do more. I’m having these thoughts and the gravity of the situation just hit me: ‘What if I’m not around? What will my children know about me? Would they know my drive?’ I just kept hearing “Be Bold.” From there I just got hungrier. A lot has happened in a short amount of time considering I sent my first email a few months ago. I gave myself a short window. Once I put it out there, I just had to keep it moving. That’s what it really means to be bold. You Don’t Have to Be Superwoman It’s like mommyhood on steroids. I’m turning 40 this year, everyone asks how I do it and I honestly don’t know. I want to give myself the life I know that I deserve. I want to give back to my kids, to my marriage. Someone must have prayed for me, really hard (laughs.). Sometimes you find yourself going through the motions, you’re living in the present but not actually there. I’m not alone, you are not alone. We all battle. I’m just encouraged to be encouraged.

We ’ r e trying to build and grow. In five years maybe we’ll have a SuperBOLD Women’s Retreat. I want people to leave with good vibes and vibrations, to amplify whatever it is that’s already in them. I think we might be on to something here. Coleman I’m looking at who’s a trailblazer or charting their own course, on their own terms. Not only women, but couples and mothers as well. Men are definitely welcome as well. Turning Your Gift Into a Craft This empowerment brunch is the brainchild of a lot of different things. I have a history of helping other people accomplish their dreams and goals, but had never tried to put myself out there to be in the spotlight. I want to create my own platform so that I can create an opportunity for like-minded women. Don’t give up. Keep moving. When it’s time, it’s your time. Featuring a keynote speech from Claire Sulmers, Editor-In-Chief of Fashion Bomb Daily, make sure you’re in the building by visiting livesuperbold. com.

A number of Hispanics have been under consideration but as Trump’s cabinet filled out, the options narrowed. Although Hispanics are disappointed they are not too surprised as Trump drew about 18 percent of the vote among Latinos, a historic low for a Republican. The drop in numbers had a lot to do with the fact that Trump labeled Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers, questioned the integrity of a Mexican-American judge, and called for mass deportations and a full-length border wall. ust as the right paint and artist make a beautiful portrait, a sound partnership can project a beauty of its own. In preparation for Super Bowl LI, the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee has joined with the City of Houston and artist Reginald Adams on a youth community arts project to inspire the creative expression of Houston’s children.

Using Art to Get Children Involved in Super Bowl LI and Inspired Beyond the Game and others. The third mural is a partnership with Houston’s First Daughter Ashley Turner in Acres Homes at the Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library. A theme has not yet be chosen for that site. And the last one will be in downtown Houston where an urban garden of geometric shapes and patterns will be created on the side of a parking garage at Rusk and Travis.

Evidence has shown how the introduction of the arts can enhance the productivity of a child. Art has been used as an outlet for children’s imagination, as way to express pinned up emotions, and as therapy to aid in a child’s development. The benefits are endless. Art can also be one that brings about inclusiveness, engagement, empowerment and hope. Four murals being painted by Houston’s children will leave that impression on the young artists while giving them a sense of pride in their work and in their city. Joining in on the fun with the children is Houston City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards. As a child she was very interested in the arts and recognizes the important outlet it was in her own life for her creativity. She wanted other children to be able thrive as she did as a result of having art as an influence, especially with the diminishing art programs from schools. Councilwoman Edwards said that we have to supplement what is lacking in schools with projects such as the youth murals. She also hopes that the murals help with the need to promote public art in Houston more. “What we have got to do is put it (the arts) on display and let the community take ownership of that,” she commented. Four mural sites have been identified throughout Houston. The first has already taken shape at Cuney Homes. Having a theme of empowerment, the mural celebrates the legacies of Norris Wright Cuney, Diane Sheffield, and Louie Vincent. All of which were civic pioneers who worked to lead, mentor, empower and strengthen the Houston community. A second mural is planed for a wall on the side of the Breakfast Klub exhibiting Houston’s greatest athletes like Simone Biles, Carl Lewis, Zina Garrison, George Foreman, Earl Campbell, Hakeem Olajuwon

This is the only mural that will not be painted by children due liability issues of children painting that close to the streets of downtown Houston. However, the artwork still has the inspiration of Houston’s children, as they will help design the mural. Councilwoman Edwards is really proud to be involved with a project that is inspiring and giving youth so much. “My favorite part of it is that of the butterfly and that it reminds me of where those kids are because they are getting ready to blossom into beautiful butterflies,” said Edwards as she referred to the Cuney Homes mural that she worked to create with youth. Painting is not the only way Councilwoman Edwards is appealing to children through this youth project. She is also helping them use their voice through artistic expression and civic engagement. “When I talk to kids I usually ask them to do two things. One never to identify a problem that they are not going to be part of the solution to resolve,” said Councilwoman Edwards. It really is a

murals will be a visual representation to Houston’s children of how relevant they are to the city. But more importantly that they personally know and appreciate the value of their own relevance.

Houston, Are You Ready for Some Football? Super Bowl LI Days Away

ouston is less than 20 days away from hosting the biggest annual sports event of the year. Ever since the bid was won in 2013, Houston has undergone a makeover with the construction of new hotels, improvements to our streets, and clean ups to beautify the city limits. Collaborations between various entities have met to ensure the safety and protection of the hundreds expected to crawl all over Houston during the 10 days of Super Bowl LI. Everything is falling into place making Houston ready for some football. Like everything we do, Houston is putting our signature stamp on the game to make it like no other experience for both fans

events that went on around the city to the business connect program, this community was all engaged.” She added, “If you are not involved it’s because you choose not to be.” Morgan could not be more correct. The number of people that it takes to put an event such as this is astonishing. From the 10,000 volunteers welcoming visitors to the city to the hundreds who have worked behind the scenes for months with President & CEO Sallie Sargent, Super Bowl LI is definitely one that belongs to the people of this city. “This as an opportunity to bring the community together, polish where we are as a city and have something that we can be proud of that is not just for our guests but

and Houstonians, which was the ultimate goal of the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee. Board member Desrye Morgan of Wells Fargo explains further, “We wanted the community to be totally engaged and they were. Between the touchdown Houston

everybody,” said Morgan. More than ever, Morgan believes Super Bowl LI will allow the not so known parts of Houston to be showcased in a broad light. As a frequent traveler, Morgan hears the stereotypes people have of Houston

thinking the city is just about oil & gas, Enron and those types of things. However, this game has brought out the city’s arts scene, displayed our innovative technology and showed Houston as a city that is more cosmopolitan and internationally diverse. “It (Super Bowl LI) is making it (Houston) more charming and interesting and it has more depth than people necessarily thought it had,” commented Morgan. Joining the board a year and a half ago, Morgan has been an integral part of pulling things together for the city. She has had a bird’s eye view of how everything has come together and she is pleased with the results. “The city looks fantastic. We are ready to receive our guests and pour out some Southern hospitality,” an elated Morgan said. So many are on pins and needles ready to celebrate and party at the various activities and events associated with Super Bowl LI but Morgan is more excited for after the major event. Not because all the work will be done but for the increase in opportunities for the city, visitors, business of interests, and events. Houston will benefit in a big way from hosting Super Bowl LI in ways that we have seen and those not yet in view. Our economy will certainly get a boost with the increased traffic. According to Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau, the expected economic impact is $350 million for the city and $4 million for various nonprofits. Our landscape has already been made better with more improvements coming. One example is the 97,000 square footage added to NFL hub area in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center and Discovery Green. People’s quality of life will be advance with the help that has and will be received. The partnership between Wells Fargo with Houston Habitat for Humanity to build 51 homes before the game is evidence of that. Super Bowl LI is already one for the record books and the game is still 16 days away! Houston could not be more prepared or excited. We are definitely ready for some football.

Al Rucker’s Dolce Lounge Brings Vivica’s Black Magic Dancer “BOLO” to Ignite Houston Area Women’s Fantasies

veryone was rather hot and bothered (but in a good way) as Dolce Ultra Lounge and Bistro hosted the stars of Vivica A. Fox’s new show, “Vivica’s Black Magic,” for its premiere on Lifetime TV Network! The new docu-series focuses on Fox’s idea to create an exotic urban male revue that is fluent in selling fantasies all across the nation. Darrin Henson, the show’s choreographer, and director came to the Houston area, along with Michael “Bolo” Boilware, to give local women a little more than they bargained for. When asked how he became involved with the show, Henson said, “Vivica and I are like sister and brother. I’ve never done reality before, and it was an opportunity to choreograph and take a show all the way to Vegas.” Henson had multiple projects and, on the first episode, had to leave the entertainers to rehearse themselves on a routine he crafted. Well, not all the men were too pleased with the routine and decided to change things up a bit. Did it work? It sure did! At the viewing party held at Dolce, owned by Houston businessman Al Rucker, the audience got to see the great performance on screen, then was treated to a live and in living color personal appearance by one of the show’s stars. BOLO, who was handpicked by non-other than Ms. Vivica

Fox herself, gave the packed room of Houston area ladies a night many of them will likely never forget. BOLO, short for “Be on the Look Out,” said he valued the experience of working with Fox, who he said, is nothing short of a boss. “I understand her intensity. I understand why she’s so passionate about what she does because it’s her name on the line. She was definitely beautiful to work with. She was cool when she had to be cool, and she was hard when Henson(L) she had to be hard,” he said. BOLO proved exactly why he is one of Fox’s chosen eight. Let’s just say, he left the Houston women screaming and begging for more. You can catch him, Fox and the other sexy men every Wednesday night on the Lifetime Television Network. Armed and Dangerous: Weekend of the Quarterback

We’ve been, I think, getting closer to that. We’ve really been clicking, at times, in the last few games.” Ok. You can put your hands down. As we prepare for the NFC Championship game (Sunday 3:05 pm ET) between the Atlanta Falcons and the Green Bay Packers, those words are like a mantra to a team that was 4-6 at the time but believed in their leader. This is the fourth postseason meeting between these two teams and the second meeting this season (Week 8 the Falcons won 33-32). It will be a very interesting matchup between the hottest quarterback over the last 8 weeks in Rodgers and the blazing QB over the entire season in Ryan, who is number one on a lot of voter’s ballots for league MVP. They will cancel each other out eventually and I feel the game will be decided by whoever has the best defense. Fortunate for “Matty Ice,” his team has the better one. Led by the NFL’s leader in sacks, Vic Beasley (15.5) and the rest of the defense that has been playing very well all season which compliments that high octane offense that produced 540 points this season. I pick the Falcons to win this game. If those last two quarterbacks are considered the “Young Whippersnappers,” then these next two are considered “Old Fogies,” in NFL years. With a mutual respect for each other, Brady and Roethlisberger approach each meeting with each other like two gladiators ready for battle. The Pittsburg Steelers and New England Patriots meet in the AFC Championship game (Sunday, 6:40 pm ET) for a third time for the rights to represent the conference in the Super Bowl. New England won the previous two meetings and

Although we’ve come. To the end of the road. Still I can’t let go. It’s unnatural. You belong to me. I belong to you.” These words are more than lyrics to Boys to Men’s 1992 hit “End of the Road,” but are the sentiment to how many fans felt including myself this past weekend after the conclusion of the second round of the playoffs. Even as I write this article the replay of Aaron Rodgers rolling left throwing a perfect sideline pass to set up the winning field goal to defeat my Dallas Cowboys still makes my stomach hurt. Ask any fan of the Texans, Chiefs, and Seahawks and I am pretty sure they can recall a plethora of plays that doomed their teams’ Super Bowl chances as well. But fret not my friends. The playoff gods have provided a way of healing this weekend’s pain by giving us two matchups that feature Tom Brady vs. Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan vs. Aaron Rodgers (still hurts to say). Yes, yes, and yes. These games will feature four quarterbacks whose 201617 (postseason included) stats included over 18,508 yards passing, 148 TD’s and 35 interceptions. And that’s with one QB (Brady) suspended for four games. So it’s plain to see who and what will be displayed as we push forward into conference championship weekend - the quarterbacks. Who can raise their hands and remember back on November 23, 2016, when Aaron Rodgers, who was coming off a defeat to the hands of the Washington Redskins, said this, “I feel like we can run the table, I really do. The offense is starting to click a little bit more; we’ve just got to put together a game where we’re more consistent from the first snap to the last.

ere. Try this. Take a sip. Give it a whirl. Do a taste-test. A preliminary trial, it won’t take long. Here, see what you think. We’re asked to sample things every day, from products to ideas but, as in the new book, “Valley of the Gods” by Alexandra Wolfe, is everything worth a try? College costs money. For millions of high school grads, that’s a fact of which they don’t need reminding. It’ll cost most of them a lot, and for years to come – unless they’ve got a better plan, such as PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel’s “20 Under 20.” Alexandra Wolfe was friends with Thiel before she learned about his program, then offering twenty young adults, all under twenty years old, a whopping $100,000 to “stop out” of college. Take a gap year or don’t go at all, Thiel said. Instead, come to Silicon Valley, create a start-up, work your revolutionary idea, and change the world. Prior to 1971, there was no “Silicon Valley,” says Wolfe; only after the many silicon chip manufacturers moved in did the area get its moniker. Today, the largest industries all have “massive bases there” and it’s “one of the biggest concentrations of billionaires in the world.” It’s a place where failure is success, and success is stratospheric. In 2009, by invitation from Thiel, the program was launched and twenty new high school graduates came to this frantic-for-the-next-big-thing business community with their near-genius ideas: John Burnham, who wanted to explore asteroid mining. Laura Deming, believer in immortality. James Proud, app builder. John Marbach, who hoped to revolutionize education. As Wolfe learned while following them,

Silicon Valley “tech giants” wanted workers who were “self-taught,” and Thiel’s 2009 group was the very essence of that. Still, the program wasn’t the fasttrack to riches everyone hoped: many of The Twenty lived in dorm-like buildings, obsessing about coding and aimlessly part-time-job-hopping with little-to-no distinction between work and life. Their eyes were opened to polyamorous lifestyles, social isolation, and gender inequality. For them, “Climbing corporate rungs was so ten years ago,” says Wolfe. But particularly when you’re “Under 20” and trying your wings, dreams die hard. It’s quite easy to trot out the old You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry cliché, but it’s true in “Valley of the Gods.” You’ll also get confused an awful lot. The good news is that author Alexandra Wolfe delves into a world that few have seen up-close: her book takes place in hallowed businesses that many of us only know by their online presences, and it’s an eye-opening look. And yet – while reading about this one elite group of would-be entrepreneurs and the extraordinary lengths that those tech companies go to woo them, there’s a lot to digest and it often comes at a breathless, almost relentless, name-dropping pace. Ctrl-alt-delete. Less of that and more about the Twenty, perhaps, would’ve been nice but I still liked this book. If you want a good peek into tech businesses and, possibly, the future, find “Valley of the Gods” and give it a try. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

went on to win it all afterward. If they want to win it all again they must rely heavily on Brady who has been phenomenal this year and showed that he is only getting better in a win over the Houston Texans. He also displayed his toughness by getting back on his feet hit after a hit that was laid on him by that Texans defense. Brady will need to duplicate that when the ball is kicked off because the defense will be looking for every opportunity to obliterate him with the postseason leaders in sacks and ageless wonder James Harrison breathing down his neck all day. The Steelers will have a tough time this week playing against the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time), especially when they almost lost to a quarterback (Alex Smith) who isn’t fit to carry the bag Brady’s game balls are in. And that is not heavy at all. Let that last sentence marinate for a while and you will get that joke. With the ability to stretch the field with Antonio Brown (232 yds. receiving) and run the ball with Le’Veon Bell (337 yards rushing), Pittsburg will look to exploit the weakness in the Patriots defense. But they have to be able to score touchdowns this week if they are looking for the upset. But anytime you have a seasoned veteran like Big Ben taking snaps, you have every opportunity to win the game. He never gets rattled and there isn’t a situation he has not seen or been in. Those factors alone are the reason I am picking the Pittsburg Steelers to win this game. Well, I guess I will fire up the old iPhone 5. Push play on this CD Walkman (things I have kept since the last Cowboys Super Bowl win). And continue having my pity party over the Cowboys defeat. Maybe I will go on Facebook Live like Antonio Brown and let the world partake in my misery. *Fade to Black with “End of The Road” playing*

f you prepare every meal with scissors, cannot boil water, and consistently undercook pasta, because you don’t know when it’s done; in my view, you are the worst cook ever. After growing tired of the afore mentioned kitchen disasters, Ann Odogwu decided to expand her culinary skills by filling out an application for Season 10 of The Food Network’s ® Worst Cooks in America. On January 1st, Ann along with 15 other recruits from across the United States were given the chance to improve their cooking and learn to create edible dishes by working with Food Network Chef mentors Ann Burrell and Rachel Ray. The participants are divided into two teams, each week a contestant will get eliminated until only two remain. The Finale airs Sunday, March 5, 2017, each finalist cooks one last meal and the winner takes home the grand prize of $25,000.00. According to a press statement “Ann Odogwu is a native of Nigeria, where cooking is a big part of the culture, so she’s ready to improve her culinary skills. Ann is the only one in her family that can’t cook an edible meal and she knows she needs to develop her independence in the kitchen. She also wants to make her family proud, especially her dad, in the process.” In our interview, Ann was asked what she thought hinders her from being able to cook as well as the rest of her family, she replied that “she uses scissors for everything because she’s afraid of knives, and that either her food turns out over –seasoned or under –seasoned.” Additionally, she really loves Italian food Odogwu and just can’t get the hang of cooking noodles. If you have seen the first episode, it’s hard to watch, Ann and her cohorts gives the show’s viewers a ring side seat to their culinary “nightmares”. We are so lucky that Chef Burrell and Ray are the ones who have to taste these dishes. Odogwu indicated that she is having fun on the show and so far this experience has been pivotal for her. She is learning so much from her mentor, who is “an amazing human being.” “Rachel Ray is like a mother who cares for everyone during production; she looks out for us every step of the way and is very encouraging.” Worst Cooks in America plays every Sunday night at 9pm E.T. and 8 pm Central on the Food Network. Let’s tune in and see if Ann Odogwu evolves from a “kitchen disaster to a kitchen master”. You can also watch full episodes online at: www.foodnetwork.com/worstcooks. BUSINESS

By Alfred E. Rucker, Special to Style

I

t’s 2017, and with a New Year brings a “New You.” With that being said, successful entrepreneurship remains at the forefront in today’s economy. Entrepreneurship is the fastest way to generate residual income and wealth; however, being your “own” man or woman can come with its own set of challenges and consequences. Al Rucker, founder of Midtown Bail Bonds and Dolce Ultra Lounge and Bistro, is giving seven tips that will ensure every entrepreneur has a successful “lift off” in 2017. Growing up, I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. All my past jobs have helped fuel my desire to succeed in various industries. Working in the automotive industry paved the way for me to learn various business and finance practices. Those transferrable skills I mastered in the auto industry gave birth to my most successful and well-known business, Midtown Bail Bonds. As a teenager, I managed fast food restaurants where I received hands-on experience in customer service, cost control and restaurant management. Those experiences aligned me for my latest venture, Dolce Ultra Lounge and Bistro, which is quickly becoming one of the best hot spots for food and live entertainment in the Houston area. Midtown Bail Bonds has celebrated a decade of continuous service and Dolce Ultra Lounge and Bistro just celebrated its one year anniversary in December, and I strongly believe that my success Rucker stems from, not only my hard work ethic, but also being a man of God, a loving husband and father, and a community servant. When you have those core values, you’re a better “people person” and have a better understanding of your employees and customers. Traits every entrepreneur should possess: • • • • • •

Effective planner and executor Team Oriented Consistency Tough Skin Confidence Risk Taker

Seven tips every entrepreneur should take into the new year: • Always evaluate - constantly look at your business for opportunities of growth and change. •

Stay consistent - give your idea time to flourish and keep working on it. Master one task before adding more projects on your plate.

Don’t be afraid to work- as an entrepreneur you’re going to work more at your business than you would any 9 to 5 job (especially at the beginning and developmental stages). Sleep is a luxury that every successful entrepreneur gets over quickly because you are building an empire.

Dedication /Commitment- commit to the end goal and be dedicated to keep moving until you see it flourish (even when you may want to throw in the towel). There will be times when you want to quit -- DON’T-- because you may be one step away from your breakthrough to the higher level, solidifying that major deal, or initiating a new platform.

7 Tips Every Entrepreneur Should Know for a Successful Lift Off in 2017 Find something that keeps you grounded -- a source of peace. There will be times that your ideas may be put into question so having a source of peace is imperative for you to stay grounded. Some great examples are: mediation, working out or speaking to a mentor for advice. Finding that source of peace early on will prepare you for the many challenges that you will encounter in your business. Remember, when things become unbearable, use your source of peace as a coping method. Clarity- be extremely clear and concise with your vision Execute- Make decisions quickly! Successful entrepreneurs don’t take forever to decide. Make your final decision with confidence, and if it needs to be changed, change it but don’t get stuck in confusion. A b o u t Alfred E. Rucker: Alfred Evine Rucker is the owner of Midtown Bail Bonds, which has multiple locations spread across Harris and Fort Bend counties. He is the true rags-to-riches story, growing up in the foster care system, and showing how true determination can turn someone’s life around. He is currently the founder of his latest venture, Dolce Ultra Lounge and Bistro. In addition to Midtown Bail Bonds and Dolce Ultra Lounge and Bistro, Rucker has a passion for pop culture, social activism and public speaking. He now hosts the Al Rucker Live Show, a platform allowing him to interview guests and speak about today’s hot topics, currently airing live every Friday on Amazing 102.5 FM from 1-2pm. The New and Improved 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Is Not Your Average Minivan

By Rebecca Briscoe, Feature Writer

I

n my nearly four decades of existence, I have never driven or had the desire to drive a minivan. For years, I saw this vehicle as a mini bus for soccer moms carrying kids back and forth from practice and grocery shopping; well not this time. Of course, I had reservations at first but when I stepped behind the wheel and noticed the luxurious interior, the ample leg room, and multiple options for kiddies to be entertained I became convinced immediately. The Chrysler brand is the mother lode of all minivans creating the first minivan more than thirty years ago, in 1984. The Chrysler Pacifica was redesigned in 2016 to reclaim its throne in 2017. Re-engineered from the ground up, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica comes with nearly 40 new minivan firsts, the largest interior volume in the segment, and more than 100 standard and available safety and security features. No longer is the boxing shaped frame the standard exterior for the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica because this minivan has a more sculpted body with chrome accents, along with 20 inch tires that hit minor bumps with a breeze.

I couldn’t believe how technologically Chrysler Pacifica, they have so much to keep them advanced this vehicle was but it is from the: parallel occupied with the ample touch screens built in the and perpendicular park assist, UCONNECT front and rear seats for preloaded games, movies, Theater with 10.1 touch screens, 360-degree surround view camera, 20 speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and tri-pane panoramic sunroof. I really enjoyed the “extra set of eyes” this driving machine gave from the blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning for oncoming traffic or children playing in the street. The Chrysler Pacifica has standard stow n’ go seats to haul everything from household goods to sports equipment. If you are a clean car freak like me enjoying the built-in vacuum is another plus. The roomy cargo space is an added bonus for last minute out of town travel (without the clutter).

O

ften, employees enroll in medical insurance plans for protection against unpredictable events, sudden illness or serious health concerns that may result in expensive medical bills. Getting the most from your benefits requires understanding coverages and deductibles, as well as taking advantage of voluntary benefits, like dental, vision and hearing, to stay healthy and save money. A v o i d surprises. About 91 percent of adults in the United States are confused about what their benefits cover, according to a recent Harris poll. The best starting point is to review your plan so you understand the care and services covered. If you have a high-deductible plan, you will need to pay for most or a percentage of the health costs until reaching the individual or family deductible. Be prepared to pay any copayments or deductibles the plan requires before receiving care. Also, before scheduling appointments, ask for a cost estimate for the appointment, tests or service. Preventive dental and vision. Many voluntary plans, such as dental and vision, offer preventive exams, such as routine cleanings and vision exams, that

4 Ways to Stretch Your Health Benefits are fully covered. That’s because these preventive exams help to maintain and improve overall health and help reduce health costs. Voluntary coverage is affordable and many plans offer added incentives. For example, coverage for LASIK, dental, vision and hearing benefits can increase from one year to the next for those who continue to enroll and use their benefits. Members could earn monetary rewards to use for dental, vision, LASIK, orthodontia and hearing benefits, care materials and services simply by using their benefits and keeping the benefits paid out under a specified amount. Medical screenings. Routine health screenings, such as mammograms, immunizations, colonoscopy procedures and prostate cancer screenings, which may be covered fully or in part by your medical coverage, can help you stay healthy and lower health care costs. Get paid to save. Many employers encourage employees to save money by matching a percentage of the amount the employee contributes to the plan. If available, enroll in a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account to set aside money to pay for health care costs. Remember that these accounts are not a substitute for the coverage provided by voluntary benefits. Learn more about the questions to ask when reviewing benefit plans at ameritasinsight.com. Cabo San Lucas: The Perfect Girlfriend’s Getaway Destination

By Brandi Neal, Travel Writer

H

ouston Style’s globetrotter on the go recently took a trip to Cabo San Lucas for a quick girlfriend’s getaway and did it all on a budget! So for those of you in need of a vacation but perhaps the holidays forced you to tighten up the boot straps a bit, here’s Brandi to tell you how to get that much needed paradise escape without breaking the bank. Our flight out of Houston to Los Cabos Airport cost just $236.60 round trip on United Airlines (Tuesday – Friday). We booked round trip transport from the airport to our hotel in advance on transbaja. com for just $36. While waiting for my 2 friends to join me, I scheduled some activities, signing us all up for a massage on the beach, an ATV ride (also on the beach) and a “booze cruise” for only $75, not $75 each, but $75 in total. Yes, amazing! O u r h o t e l reservations were at the Fairfield Inn, three girls to a room. While the hotel was not on the beach, it was just a 5-minute drive or a 15-minute walk to the sand and that was good enough for us. As soon as we checked in and dropped off our bags, we hit the town. Our first day in Cabo was devoted to shopping and venturing out to some of the local clubs. We headed to the Office, which is the perfect place to hang out, mingle with the locals, check out vendors and eat great food. Our table setting was perfect - right on the sand under an umbrella, just

inches away from the water. I ordered enchiladas with chips and guacamole and the best margarita ever! On Thursdays, they put on a Mexican fiesta, which you won’t want to miss. If you’re in the mood for American food, try Doggy Style, our favorite for great hot dogs, hamburgers, and fries, (especially the chili cheese fries) and of course milk shakes. We kept going back, with each meal being tastier than the last. We shopped and made some great purchases at a variety of pop-up stands along the beach and also made our way to the Plaza Bonita Shopping Mall. The mall is packed with tourists from all parts of the world, so that means a plethora of restaurants specializing in every type of cuisine, not to mention the nightclubs. Our favorite club in Cabo was El Squid Roe, a nightclub and restaurant all in one, taking up a full three floors. It’s one of the most popular clubs in town with tons of people dancing on the open-air dance floor, which is on the main level. Plenty of patrons tabledance as well, totally lost in the music. You can find El Squid Roe right across from the Hard Rock Café. On the second day we enjoyed breakfast overlooking the beach, then laid out at the pool. Later,

we headed back to the beach for some more pampering and enjoyed the best massage EVER overlooking the water. There simply is no better way to relax in the sun and did I mention the massage was only $25! We then made our way back to the hotel to get ready for our Sunset Cruise on Cabo Escape, which included a great evening filled with fantastic music, unlimited food and drinks enjoyed by a diverse group of people, all there to have fun. The ambiance was just right and we all had a great cruise on the water. On our third and final full day in Cabo, we enjoyed Cactus ATVs. I had lined this package up ahead of time, which included round trip transport to the ATV Park from our hotel. We paid a $15 entry fee plus $40 for insurance, but it was all well worth it. Riding ATVs along the beach, the view was truly breathtaking! We really enjoyed this beach activity and highly recommend it for those looking to do something a little different. To sum it up, Cabo is a perfect beach destination getaway for a little fun with the girls and without the stress of breaking your budget.
