COMMENTARY Shutdown Allowed Trump To Play Poisonous Political Game
D
By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
onald Trump had the government shutdown that he wanted. No one should be confused about this. The shutdown allowed Trump and Republicans to ply their poisonous politics of division. And the shutdown provided occasion for a shakedown of Democrats, with Trump willing to shut the government down until he got billions for the wall that he had preposterously promised the Mexicans would pay for. The record here is quite clear. Long before the deadline, Trump tweeted that a “good shutdown” might be necessary to “fix mess!” His White House and the Republican Congress have utter scorn for federal employees, so treating these public servants shabbily is, to them, a feature, not a bug.
Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Lindsay Graham, representing a bipartisan group, brought him that agreement.
Rifle Association block any reform of our ridiculous gun laws, responsible for all of those murders?
That’s when Trump purposefully blew up the process, scorning immigrants from “s—hole countries.” Even when Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer agreed with Trump’s demand for billions for the wall, there was still no deal. He “couldn’t take yes for an answer,” Schumer concluded.
That’s the logic of the Trump campaign ad slurring Democrats on immigration. Now a deal has been reached to reopen the government, at least until Feb. 8. In theory, Democrats will gain relief for the Dreamers that is favored by some 85 percent of Americans. Trump will probably shake out billions to waste on his wall. Government will reopen, with the same distorted priorities.
Why would Trump and Republicans force the shutdown? The Trump campaign made that clear, rolling out a vicious television ad calling Democrats “complicit” for slayings committed by undocumented immigrants.
When Americans find public services less available, Social Security claims delayed, water systems fouled, that’s a benefit too — because it just provides fuel for Trump’s attack on government.
The White House and Republican legislators repeated endlessly scurrilous talking points that they knew were a lie: Democrats favor protecting illegal immigrants over funding our soldiers, supporting our veterans and providing services for Americans.
The blowup was utterly unnecessary. Trump postured publicly as a supporter of the Dreamers, the hundreds of thousands of innocents, brought here as infants, who now — because of Trump’s executive order — face deportation to countries that they have never known. Trump claimed he was ready to support a bipartisan agreement.
This is ugly, race-based politics at its worse. Republicans reveled in it, claiming they had the upper hand. It’s worth remembering that many recent mass murders in America — in Newtown, Orlando, Las Vegas, Charleston and Sutherland Springs — involved U.S.-born assailants. Are Republicans, who in league with the National
POLITICAL
T
he White House will release a “legislative framework” for an immigration deal on Monday that it believes can earn bipartisan support, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said. The White House’s plan comes after the latest negotiations between the White House and lawmakers of both parties broke down, leading to a three-day government shutdown. The framework is expected to give much-needed guidance to lawmakers on Capitol Hill, who have at times struggled to grasp what kind of deal President Donald Trump would and would not be willing to reach. Several lawmakers have expressed frustration in recent weeks that the guidance from the White House has been unclear or inconsistent. South Carolina’s Sen. Lindsey Graham, a key Republican negotiator, called the White House’s plan to release a framework “excellent,” noting the importance

Whether the government will finally get a real budget for the remainder of this fiscal year (which ends on the last day of September) remains to be seen. Will Trump finally take yes for an answer? Trump and his campaign aides clearly see the political gain from parading as tough on immigration over and over again. He said in the public meeting he held that he’d be willing to “take the heat” of a bipartisan immigration deal. But he has preferred constantly to sow division rather than solve problems. The second obstacle is the House leadership and caucus. There’s a majority in the House for good immigration reform, but
the Republican leadership refuses to take up a measure that would pass unless a majority of Republicans alone support it. That makes the leadership hostage to the most right-wing faction in the party. And a large number of them don’t want any deal, period. Trump’s aides say he is the great dealmaker. There’s no question if he wants a deal, there is one available. The question remains is he prepared to make a deal. Now, he’ll have until Feb. 8 to make up his mind. The sad product of all this is that America’s politics will grow uglier and more divisive. The White House and Republicans see themselves as having profited by appealing to our fears, by playing race-bait politics, by peddling hate. They will surely keep doing what they think works. Trump will continue to drive Americans apart — until we come together to call him and the Republicans who echo him to account. You can write to the Rev. of getting the White House’s “input.” Republican Sen. David Perdue of Georgia, an immigration hard-liner aligned with the White House, said he spoke with Trump on Wednesday about this issue and that the President remains committed to the core pillars he had previously laid out. Sanders reiterated those requirements on Wednesday: “securing the border and closing legal loopholes, ending extended family chain migration, canceling the visa lottery and providing a permanent solution on DACA.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said he had offered and then rescinded border wall funding in exchange for Dreamer protections, said Wednesday he was looking for a reset. “We’re starting over,” Schumer told CNN on Wednesday when asked about the latest on the standoff over Congress’ plans for addressing the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. “I took our thing off -- they took their thing off the table, I took our thing, we’re starting over.”
Jan. 25- Jan 31, 2018 www.stylemagazine.com
Defend DACA Schumer was referring to an offer he made Trump last week to authorize upward of $20 billion for a border wall, a signature campaign pledge for the President, in exchange for protecting recipients of DACA, young undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children.
Trump decided last fall to end the program by March 5, and Congress has since failed to reach agreement with the White House about how to extend it. The White House rejected Schumer’s offer.

overnor Greg Abbott, in partnership with Texas House and Senate leadership, recently approved a request by the Texas General Land Office (GLO) for $38.6 million in disaster-related aid to fund critical direct housing programs across the Gulf region in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The funds will be transferred from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to the General Land Office. P
resident Trump’s voting commission asked every state and the District for detailed voter registration data, but in Texas’s case it took an additional step: It asked to see Texas records that identify all voters with Hispanic surnames. In buying nearly 50 million records from the state with the nation’s second-largest Hispanic population, a researcher for the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity checked a box on two Texas public voter data request forms explicitly asking for the “Hispanic surname flag notation,” to be included in information sent to the voting commission, according to copies of the signed and notarized state forms. White House and Texas officials said the state’s voter data was never delivered and the voting commission was disbanded January 3.

OP-ED Black Leaders Need to
Stand Up for the Black Community By Raynard Jackson (NNPA Newswire Columnist)
I
am fond of saying, “weak people take strong positions on weak issues.” There is no better example of this than the embarrassing behavior of the weak Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the National Urban League (NUL).
These groups have all feigned righteous indignation about the alleged negative comments made by President Trump two weeks ago about Haiti, Africa, and El Salvador. Yes, our president can be extremely hyperbolic at times, but the essence of what he said was very true. Those countries, including many in Africa, are basket cases. So, all of the aforementioned radical liberal groups ran over their mothers to get to a news camera to denounce the president for his alleged statement. With all the issues facing the Black community, CBC members joined other Democrats to attempt to pass a resolution through the U.S. House of Representatives to censure Trump for his comments, a symbolic gesture that must have kept Trump awake all night. Derrick Johnson, the president and CEO of the NAACP called Trump a “racist.”Wow. I am sure that Trump is going to change his ways now. Marc Morial, the president and CEO of the NUL, said that “President Trump’s crude comments further reveal the repugnant racial motivations behind his administration’s immigration policies.” Trump must be shaking

n Thursday of last week, Amazon released its highly anticipated “short list,” which was comprised of 20 cities being considered for the second Amazon headquarters location. Houston did not make the list and many across the city felt shock and disappointment. When I heard the news, I took a moment to question why Houston – a diverse metropolitan city with over 2 million residents – was not selected as a serious contender and I immediately focused one of our city’s major challenges – transportation. Houston has struggled to meet the needs of a growing population with regard to advances in transportation. In the past, some of our congressional members who served in leadership positions, missed opportunities to bring

in his boots. I challenge my readers to find any issue directly related to Blacks in the U.S., i.e. American citizens, that these groups have put so much political and emotional capital in. It seems that these “media-appointed” Black leaders care more about those in the country illegally, homosexuals, or other groups that have no connection to America than they do the very people they “claim” to represent. Emanuel has proven his total disdain for Blacks with his actions, not his rhetoric. Chicago is one of the most dangerous and violent cities in America. Where was the CBC’s outrage at this? Why was there no attempt to censure Emanuel? Why are they not marching through the streets of Chicago? The NAACP and the UL have not convened a meeting or massive demonstration against Emanuel to denounce him as a racist. Oh, I forgot, he is a Democrat, therefore, he can’t be racist. Just because you are the head of an organization, doesn’t mean you are a leader. Can you name me the leaders of the White community? But, I digress. Members of the CBC are willing to oppose the shortterm, Republican-sponsored spending bill, because that bill didn’t include a long-term fix for President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program; even though this move would have devastating effects on the Black community, the same group they “claim” to represent. Can you name me one issue that was of specific urgency to the Black community that the
Raynard Jackson says that Black leaders must do more to stand up for the rights of the Black community. CBC has ever shut down the government for? Name me one member of the CBC that has a bill passed in his name? Name me one member of the CBC that has his name attached to a bill that became law, i.e. Sarbanes-Oxley, or the Hyde Amendment. To the NAACP and the UL: Why is amnesty for illegals a “moral” imperative, but the high crime rate in the Black community isn’t?
do these “media-appointed” leaders make everyone else’s issues their issue? When have you heard the illegals speaking out against the high unemployment rate in the Black community or discrimination in college admissions? When have you seen the homosexual community speak out against housing discrimination towards Blacks or lack of access to capital for Black business owners?
Why wasn’t the double-digit Black unemployment rate under eight years of Obama a “moral” imperative? Remember the famous quote from former chair of the CBC and congressman from Mo., Emanuel Cleaver from September 2011: “If Obama were White, we’d be marching on the White House.” This remark was made in regard to Obama doing nothing to reduce the Black unemployment rate, which was around 17 percent at the time. Why
So, then, why are we fighting everyone else’s battles at the expense of our own community? federal transportation dollars back to Houston for critical initiatives and efforts to ease traffic congestion. Our transportation and infrastructure challenges are no secret to those outside of Houston and this perceived slight could serve as the impetus for our congressional leaders to advocate for what Houston needs to take our city to the next level of competition. I share the same sentiments as Mayor Sylvester Turner when he was quoted as saying, “The city is well-positioned, but it also is an indication that there is a lot of work that still needs to be done.” As I thought about the city’s challenges, I concluded that the bright side to not being selected is that businesses within the Houston area – HEB, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot to name a few – will not be negatively affected by the increased

The historically black college and university recently announced the establishment of the Center for Justice Research or CJR. The center is the latest in an initiative designed to produce innovative solutions to criminal justice reform and address challenges in America’s criminal justice system. The school was awarded $2.7 million by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and its Center for Advancing Opportunities. According to many, the primary focus of the research center will be to utilize an experienced group of researchers working to understand and address the current challenges of the United States criminal justice system. “The Center for Justice Research represents a new direction for Texas Southern and will strengthen our commitment to equal justice for all citizens,” TSU President Austin A. How The USOC Failed Its Gymnasts

T
he sentencing of disgraced doctor Larry Nassar by Judge Rosemarie Aquilina to 175 years in prison for seven counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree should have been the end of the most heinous sexual abuse scandal in sports history. Instead, it is only the beginning. Nassar, who was employed by USA Gymnastics as well as Michigan State is only the face of a scandal that willingly turned a blind eye to young girls who came to USA Gymnastics to pursue their Olympic dreams. Nassar admitted to sexually abusing over 150 female athletes during the course of his tenure as the chief doctor for USA Gymnastics. know the horrific experience does not define me.” She added, “It breaks my heart even more to think that as I work toward my dream of competing in Tokyo 2020, I will have to continually return to the same training facility where I was abused.”
Nassar’s crimes were not limited to Michigan State. They also occurred near the Karolyi Ranch outside of Huntsville. The famed gymnastics compound operated by Martha and Bela Karolyi is now under investigation after Nassar admitted to his crimes. Last week, USA Gymnastics cut ties with the Ranch, which had been the primary training facility for U.S. gymnastics since 2001 and was deemed an Olympic training site in 2011.
The current climate of the country has been finding culpability for sexual misconduct. The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements both have called for sexual abusers to be outed and women no longer feel shamed in reporting their accounts. In most of those instances in Hollywood, it is adult women being harmed by men. In Nassar’s case, it is young girls, children even. Despite being alerted numerous times of his actions, numerous officials simply batted the issue away. Or feigned ignorance all together.
In a statement she posted on Twitter January 15, Biles wrote, “After hearing the brave stories of my friends and other survivors, I

US Gymnastics Chairman Paul Parilla, Vice Chairman Jay Binder, and Treasurer Bitsy Kelley all resigned in the wake of the scandal. Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon also announced her resignation, even as some trustees wanted her to stay, citing her pull for donations to the athletic department in tentpole sports such as basketball. School officials who believed they could hide behind a cloak of not knowing about Nassar’s actions were proven wrong when The Detroit Free Press uncovered that fourteen university officials were told of Nassar’s actions some twenty years before his December 2016 arrest. All young girls, all reaching out to athletic staff and officials, only to be ignored. In court, victims read impact statements, detailing what Nassar had done to them. Some of the testimony reduced those in the courtroom to tears as Nassar hung his head in shame. Nancy Hogshead Makar, three-
time Olympic gold medalist turned attorney wants the punishment to extend well beyond Nassar and into the USOC as well.
said anything or complained we were being dramatic, or high maintenance or difficult,” Raisman told The Chicago Sun-Times.
“Congress should investigate Scott Blackmun and the USOC because of their deliberate indifference to the safety of athletes,” she told Dave Zirin of The Nation. “The Olympic sports movement is a pedophile’s dream set-up.
If there was any physical ailment, the gymnasts could only go to medical personnel who worked with USA gymnastics. The lead officer was Nassar. Physical therapy was deemed mandatory to as a National Team Agreement states, “to enhance physical performance.” Again, the lead doctor? Nassar.
Families are expected to give complete control over to the coach, often times banning parents from watching practices. To make matters worse, the US Olympic Committee’s official legal position is that the organization doesn’t protect athletes from sexual abuse; that removing pedophiles from the Olympic movement isn’t their job.” Even as Judge Aquilina stated that she had signed Nassar’s “death warrant” in sentencing him on Wednesday, it does not feel like it is enough. Not as he operated as a member of a national organization to prey upon young children. Not as he robbed young women of their innocence under the guise of a pelvis examination. Not as he happened to be isolated with gymnasts at camps, those same gymnasts according to Raisman who were “conditioned not to say anything.” “They always made us feel like if we ever
Fixing things within U.S. gymnastics is going to take many steps as Nassar’s actions have not only tainted the memories fans have of the star-studded 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams but the image of Bela Karolyi holding Keri Strug during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. “Please, your honor, stress the need to investigate how this happened so we can hold accountable those who enabled Larry Nassar.” Raisman told Aquilina. Days later, Aquilina expressed why the investigation shouldn’t stop with her ruling. Nor should it. “Justice requires more than what I can do on this bench,” she said. Justice shall require any of those whom enabled Nassar and the USOC to come forth and face punishment. It is the only way that healing can even begin.

ENTERTAINMENT Houston Grand Opera’s Opera to Go! Presents Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers
H
ouston Grand Opera’s (HGO) Opera to Go! presents the world premiere of Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers, with music by rising composer Kamala Sankaram and libretto by David Johnston, February 2 and 3, 9:30 and 11 a.m. both days, at Heinen Theater, 3517 Austin St., Houston. Performances are free. The 45-minute family opera is inspired by Indian and Chinese mythology and includes music influenced by Bollywood. A hilarious fable, Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers demonstrates the power of teamwork as a monkey prince and his brainy sister outwit a hungry crocodile and escape from the City of Tigers. The opera is a co-commission of HGO’s HGOco arm with American Lyric Theater, which presented a partially staged performance in New York City earlier in January. Seen and Heard International noted, “the libretto was sophisticated and fresh, while the music was witty and eclectic. You tapped your toes and found yourself singing along.” “Though we envisioned

this opera for children, the whole family will love it,” says Carleen Graham, director of HGOco. “Kamala and David have created a new classic for 21st-century families.” In addition to the free public performances, an Opera to Go! tour of the opera is scheduled from January 29 through May 18, 2018. Dates are still available. Opera to Go! presents fully staged, high-energy operas in schools, libraries, and community centers in the Greater Houston area. Performances, sung in English, are approximately 45 minutes long and are designed for today’s young audiences. They are recommended for grades two through eight but often appeal to adults as well. Teachers receive a study guide in advance to help students gain context about the operas. For questions and information about booking an Opera to Go! performance, please call 713-546-0231 or email OperaToGo@hgo.org For financial assistance, schools or nonprofits should contact Anina Moore at the Texas Commission on the Arts at 512-936-6573. Praised as “strikingly original” (New York Times), composer Kamala Sankaram has received commissions from Beth Morrison Projects, HERE Arts Center, Opera on Tap, and Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra, among others. of teamwork.” Together, your team can do great things.
At first, it was tennis. When little Jen Welter’s mother suggested that her daughters pick just one after-school activity, Welter chose tennis and became obsessed with it.
She’d already received her second Team USA gold medal when she made history by joining the Texas Revolution, an Indoor Football League team, for training camp. When the next life-changing phone call came shortly thereafter, Welter again made history with the Arizona Diamondbacks by becoming the NFL’s first female coach.
She practiced non-stop and ultimately beat players much older than she, but a coach’s dismissive words caused her to give up the game.
That, her doctorate degree in psychology, and two other college degrees have given Welter a unique viewpoint on leadership…
Is it a biography? Yes, mostly. Is it a sports book? Absolutely, it is. Is it a business book? That, too, and while it may seem like a mish-mash of subjects, it works here. Author and speaker Dr. Jen Welter (with Stephanie Krikorian) rolls multiple expertises into a narrative that can tiresomely brag but, moreover, entertains and instructs in a tone that pulls rather than pushes.
Rugby stole her heart in college and that led to a try-out for the Massachusetts Mutiny, a women’s pro football team. Though Welter was “small,” she used it to her advantage; once on the team, she knew football was her destiny.
Always be authentic, she says; “Heart can’t be quantified.” Don’t rush to commit to your dream, if the timing isn’t exactly right. Look for a mentor and be one. Don’t “confuse money with security, and comfort with progress.”
It wasn’t going to make her rich, though: she was paid a dollar a game her first season, though the situation got better

As a performer, Sankaram has been hailed as “an impassioned soprano with blazing high notes” (Wall Street Journal).
In many ways, “Play Big” is a book looking for its niche.
In her book, Welter wrestles with that style of leadership now and then, but she explains how it works for her. It works for readers, too, as she speaks to businesspeople and their teams, both on and off the field, and to women, with a personal story that’s timely and powerfully unforgettable.
