n his combative inaugural address, Donald Trump promised that his inauguration would be remembered “as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again.” He celebrated “a historic movement, the likes of which the world has never seen before.” At its center, he said, was a “crucial conviction: that a nation exists to serve its citizens.” The next day, his inauguration sparked a mass mobilization of historic proportions across the country and the world. Organized spontaneously over social media, without initial support of national organizations or leaders, it brought millions of people into the streets in support of women’s rights, human rights, and basic decency. Millions of Americans -- representative of

Will Trump Choose to Govern With Grace Or In Denial? the majority of voters that did not support Trump -- called on him to hear their voices. Trump is president, so he gets to decide whether to listen or not. Clearly, his instinct is to feel insulted, to strike back, to deny their claim. In his first hours in office, he offended the professionals of the CIA, denounced the press as dishonest for accurately reporting on the inaugural turnout, and issued an executive order to begin repeal of Obamacare, potentially stripping millions of health coverage. But Trump is likely to learn, as his predecessors did before him, that even in the presidency, grace and compromise increase power; denial and spitefulness saps it away. The president is most powerful when he is in fact responsive to the citizenry; he is least powerful when he insists on doing it “my way,” scorning those who petition him. Grace and responsiveness doesn’t require abandoning one’s own promises or program. Many of Trump’s promises will garner widespread support. His pledge to rebuild our decrepit infrastructure, to “buy American and hire American,” will be applauded across partisan

oris Miles, with the winter s u n p i e r c i n g t h e Te x a s Capitol, was cheered on by half a dozen bus loads of supporters that traveled to Austin Tuesday, January 10th when he was sworn-in to succeed Rodney Ellis as Houston and south Texas’ only African American State Senator. Miles raised his right hand to represent SD 13 in the upper chamber. “As a successful self-built business owner, I will fight for to balance the budget but not on the backs of poor folk, children or elderly. As a former police officer, one of my top reasons to be here is criminal justice reform,” said Miles, who has filed bills already focused on providing pre-K education, getting help for struggling students, making the lives of foster children better and getting security for seniors. He’s most proud of three Bills he supports to combat police “official oppression” and to recognize the importance of Texas Southern University to Texas’ future. Miles said his biggest motivation is to bring to SD 13 the responsive, reliable, respectful constituent service he brought to House District 146 for 10 years consistent with
corrupted politics and an economy that did not work for working people. He argues that he alone can fix it. He offers a mix of the new -- new trade policies, a massive effort to rebuild America -- and old elixirs that have already failed -- top-end and corporate tax cuts, deregulation, privatization. The Republican Congress will push the latter and try to block or weaken the former. Trump will need allies to preserve the parts of his agenda that actually might help put people to work, and he will need to take a hard look at the parts that are likely to add to their despair -- starting with the repeal of Obamacare, particularly the gutting of Medicaid. In his first days in office, the President has shown that he knows how to shout. The question now is whether he has any capacity to listen. You can write to the Rev. divides. His pledge to revise our failed trade regime will win him support in union halls and over family dinner tables. His pledge to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will be backed by the vast majority of Americans. His intimation that he is skeptical about regime change, and that he wants to limit American interventions abroad and push our allies to bear their fair share of the burdens, will be widely popular. If he uses the presidency to divide us one from another, however, he is likely to reap the whirlwind. As the march demonstrated, millions of Americans will mobilize to stop the effort to deprive women of basic rights, to wrench immigrant parents from their children, to rollback voting rights, or to embolden racially biased policing and ignore the systemic bias that puts lives at risk. If he continues to ignore the reality of catastrophic climate change, he will not only face mass civil disobedience but he will be condemned for generations to come. I understand what the needs are. I’m going to be focusing on constituents,” he said in addressing what is his first priority. Miles replaces Ellis who held the seat for 27 years and succeeds El Franco Lee on the Harris County Commissioner’s Court. Miles was first elected to serve as State Rep. for HD 146 in 2006 when he defeated 29-year incumbent Al Edwards. He started his business, Borris L. OSCARS 2017: A Record Breaking Six Black Actors Nominated
Goode, Managing Editor
fter much backlash, it seems the Oscars have finally got a touch of melanin. This year’s Oscars list has a record breaking six African Americans nominees in dominant categories. Plus, three movies are up for Best Picture. The Oscars have gone from #OscarsSoWhite to #OscarsSoBlack. It was Hattie McDaniel who first paved the way for African Americans in Hollywood history. McDaniel was both the first African American to be nominated and win. She won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Gone With the Wind in 1940. The next major milestone would not occur until 28 years later when two African Americans became nominated in the same category, although it was not known at the time. Beah Richards of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was up against Carol Channing of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” for Best Supporting Actress. Channing did not reveal her African American lineage until years later. And who can forget the historic wins of Hallie Berry (“Monster’s Ball”) and Denzel Washington (“Training Day”) in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories in 2001. But never has there ever been an Oscar list of nominees with such diversity. The most crowded field is that of Best Actress with Viola Davis for “Fences,” Octavia Spencer for “Hidden Figures,” and Naomie Harris for “Moonlight” in the same category. Also snagging nominations are Ruth Negga for Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Loving,” Denzel Washington for Best Actor in a Leading Role for “Fences,” Mahershala Ali for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “Moonlight,” and Barry Jenkins for Best Director for “Moonlight.” “Moonlight” leads the pack for AfricanAmerican films with the most nominations as it is also in competition for Best Picture with “Fences” and “Hidden Figures.” Additionally, three other films are up for Best Documentary – “13th,” “OJ:

Though many of the actors and actresses nominated are thankful for the recognition of

their work, they look forward to the day when the color of your skin won’t matter, just your talent. “I think it’s unfortunate that we still have to focus on color. What the Oscars are about and what the awards should be about is a recognition of talent and incredible hard work, irrespective of color,” said Naomie Harris, Best Supporting Actress nominee. Davis, who is the first African American to have three Oscar nominations in her career, said, “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing this extraordinary, important film and my work in it. Thank you, Denzel, for being at the helm!” All this buzz for African American actors and actresses is good news but other minorities are still feeling the cold shoulder. Hispanics are almost absent from this year’s Oscars if weren’t for the nomination of Lin-Manuel Miranda for Best Original Song “How Far I’ll Go.” In the history of the Oscars only one Latino has ever walked away with the golden statue for Best Actor. That was Jose Ferrer who won in 1950. A Latina would not be nominated for Best Actress until 1998. Only a handful of other Latino actors and actresses have won Oscars including Anthony Quinn for Best Supporting Actor in 1952 and 1956; Rita Moreno for Best Supporting Actress in 1962; and Mercedes Ruehl for Best Supporting Actress in 1992. Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón was the first Latino Mexican cinematographer to win an Oscar while Emmanuel Lubezki is the record breaker with seven nominations and one win. Looking at this history, it is evident that Hollywood has come a long way and still has further to go. Actors must continue to raise their collective voices to call out wrongs, demand better opportunities, and create their own way in tinsel town. The more exposure, the more diversity, the more the Oscars will look like all of America.

Simply the Best: Jeff Bagwell Finally In the Hall of Fame
By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer
s we patiently awaited the arrival of one of Houston’s iconic sports legends. You could hear all of the positive compliments being thrown around the room. Things like hard worker, dedicated, clubhouse leader, etc. I even overheard one story of where a first base umpire got a call wrong and he said, “That’s ok. We all make mistakes.” On January 18, 2017, Jeff Bagwell, Former Houston Astros first baseman, was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is the second player from the franchise (Craig Biggio was inducted in 2015) to receive such honor. The organization decided to host a public pep rally for him and in usual Bagwell fashion he thought it was entirely too much. “I am just an east coast kid who worked hard and gave my all every time I took the field,” Jeff said in a low but forceful tone. With his family front and center, along with the aforementioned Biggio and other former teammates in the crowd, Bagwell seemed at ease when he was speaking of them and not of himself. “What most people don’t understand is that you spend more time with your teammates than you do with your own family. I think 7 (Biggio) knows me better than I know myself.” Jeff reiterated to the media. A career .297 hitter with 449 homers and 1,529 runs batted in, Bagwell still harps on the missed opportunities in the playoffs. His spirit seemed to drop when he spoke on his playoff

atch me if you can. You might have said that once, giggling. You may have yelled it at a game one afternoon. You said it, maybe, in a flirtatious manner on some romantic evening. Run, run, run, catch me if you can because, as in “Man on the Run” by Carl Weber, this chase may keep a man out of prison. The night Kyle Richmond learned that his best friend, Jay Crawford, had busted out of prison was unusually memorable: Kyle and his wife were naked in their hot tub when U.S. Marshalls broke in and surprised them. The Feds were sure that Jay had contacted Kyle, in search of money and a place to hide. The Marshalls had shown up at Wil Duncan’s office that afternoon, too, but they quickly learned that Wil didn’t know where Jay was. Wil was best friends with his boy, Jay, for years but that didn’t mean he was a regular visitor at the prison. Truth: he hadn’t seen Jay in ages. No, Wil had enough problems, with his job and his powerful uncle putting the pressure on him to join the “family business.” Jay’s other best friend, Allen, wasn’t visited by the U.S. Marshalls – maybe because he’d never gone to see Jay in prison. He had his hands full just keeping his beautiful wife, Cassie, happy, so instead, Allen anonymously put money in Jay’s commissary fund and sent him gifts, but his name was not tied to the criminal Jay Crawford. It was quite a surprise that Jay showed up on Allen’s doorstep, looking for help. Ten years ago, Jay Crawford was accused of raping a woman, but she’d set him up. He was innocent and because of that, he wasn’t about to take the rap for
failure (.226 BA with 25 strikeouts). “I have had some bad games in the playoffs and a lot of people (media) sitting in front of me have let me know it,” said the franchise all time leader in home runs, RBI, batting average, and walks. I had an opportunity to speak with former Astros playby- play broadcaster Bill Brown and he pointed out an important factor that most fans miss when they talk about Bagwell. “You have to remember that Jeff played in a pitcher friendly park (The Astrodome) for a large part of his career. If he would have started in this place (Minute Maid Park) we would be looking at a guy who would have finished with well over 500 homeruns.” He also stated that there wasn’t a nicer guy he covered throughout his 30 years with the Astros. “I remember climbing on the roof of a one story house to fix the antenna to watch the Red Sox on channel 6. My dad was a very big fan of the Boston team and you better not think about mentioning that team from New York (Yankees),” Bagwell said. It was very evident that his father
made a huge impact on his life and Jeff applies that same model to raise his kids. He constantly reminded us on how important his family was to him. I had the honor of asking him the last question of the session. “What would you tell a kid who wants to be like you?” The Hall of Famer looked me directly in the eyes and said, “Don’t ever quit on anything you do. Whatever you start, you finish.” And just like that he walked away gracefully and humbly in typical Bagwell fashion knowing that he was simply the best to ever play the game.
Man on the Run anything, even if it meant parole – and so, he escaped from prison instead. He figured he could count on his three best friends to help a guy out. He never figured that his friends would be the ones who’d need help… Confession time: I’d stopped reading author Carl Weber’s novels a few books ago. I was getting tired of all the women, beautiful, and all the men, criminal. Same-same-same, and it was no fun. But with “Man on the Run,” I’m glad I came back into the fold. The women are still all beautiful here and the men still get into trouble, but this book arcs back into some old Weber favorites from many years past. Savvy, long-time readers will remember many hearts and laws broken, as well as a lot of hot mattresses and cold revenge. You’ll welcome all of them back as Weber takes readers again into his beloved Queens, to backstabbing boardrooms, steamy bedrooms, and businesses that are never as innocent as they seem. Yes, it’s over-the-top, but this book just feels better than prior ones. Once you’ve read it and gotten over its slippery little cliffhanger, in fact, you’ll be hungry for the next installment. In the meantime, “Man on the Run” is the book to catch. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

5 Tips to Tackle a Tasty Game Day Menu By Family Features
J
ust like your favorite sports team, hosting a winning big-game party or tailgate takes planning, preparation and teamwork. To make your festivities fun-filled, remember these entertaining tips that are sure to score big with your fans.
Scatter the refreshments. Help direct movement and traffic flow by setting up food stations. Using different rooms or areas helps prevent congestion and encourages guests to mingle. Try placing finger foods and other appetizers in a couple of locations, beverages in another area and desserts in yet another space. Embrace variety. Take into account taste preferences and dietary needs, and have an assortment of food and drinks available. Offer spicy options along with less seasoned dishes, both indulgent and better-for-you treats, plus an array of beverages for drinkers and non-drinkers alike. Build your roster. If your party is a potluck, encourage guests to sign up for dishes so you don’t end up with multiple versions of the same thing. Create a discussion group online, or simply ask guests to indicate what they’ll bring along with their RSVP. Don’t forget the dips. Wings are a tailgating staple, and dips are a great way to complement those zesty flavors or cool the heat, but you may find yourself in a team rivalry when it comes to the preferred dip at the game day bash: ranch or bleu cheese dressing? Both pair well with a range of wing flavors, so these dips are sure to be crowd pleasers. The delicious combination of fresh herb and vegetable flavors make Litehouse Homestyle Ranch a perfect party choice, and Litehouse Chunky Bleu Cheese features fresh buttermilk, homemade mayonnaise and a blend of spices as the backdrop for award-winning artisan blue cheese chunks that will make your fellow sports fans cheer for more. Expand on tradition. Tailgating is a time-honored tradition, and the food lineup is often based on familiar fare. Along with those fan favorites, don’t be afraid to put some new flavors into play, such as these Sticky Sesame Chicken Wings that add a tangy ethnic flair to traditional wings. Science Confirms Turmeric Can Be As Effective As 7 Drugs

urmeric or Haldi as they call it in Hindi was revered for it’s spiritual significance. Often referred to as The Golden Spice, Kitchen Gold or The Spice of Life, turmeric is a common accessory in wedding rituals and prayer ceremonies in the Eastern part of the world. Originally the spice was used in rites and rituals intended to promote fertility, prosperity and spiritual purification. But soon, those who used turmeric saw it’s healing properties and started sharing it for various ailments. Now, as more are becoming familiar with the spice, it is being used and powerful tool, in conjunction with or in some cases, in replacement of certain medications, to fight off a number of diseases. 1. Antiseptic – Turmeric is incredibly purifying. As a sure source of anti-fungal, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial extracts, this spice can help you fight infections and boost immunity. 2. Reduces the Risk of Childhood Leukemia – Symptoms of leukemia are often caused by problems in the child’s bone marrow, which is where the leukemia begins. As leukemia cells build up in the marrow, they can crowd out the normal blood cell-making cells. As a result, a child may not have enough normal red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood platelets. Turmeric helps to strengthen those blood cell-making cells. 3. Natural Liver Detoxifier – Though AfricanAmericans represent 13 percent of the U.S population, they make up about 22 percent of chronic hepatitis C, a liver disease, cases. In addition, numbers

GM Paid $1.3 Million to Buy Back Its Cool 1960s Research Car
CNN/Style Magazine Newswire By Peter Valdes-Dapena
G
eneral Motors paid over $1.3 million over the weekend to buy back a bulletshaped single seat experimental car the automaker had built and used in the early 1960s, GM confirmed on Tuesday. The car, called CERV I, was purchased at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottdale on Saturday. The fact that GM had bought the car was first reported by the Web site CorvetteBlogger.com. CERV I, for Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle, was developed in 1959 and 1960 to test and develop a variety of suspension and chassis components. It was the brain child of legendary GM engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. He was the man largely credited with taking the Chevrolet Corvette from a nice looking, but otherwise unremarkable, little convertible to a genuinely competitive sports car. Though it looked like an open-wheeled race car, the CERV I never actually raced since GM did not allow involvement in racing at the time. The closest it got was when Duntov drove some demonstration laps in the car before the 1960 U.S. Grand Prix.
LIFESTYLE
The car was originally equipped with a light weight 350 horsepower V8. Duntov later installed a more powerful engine. It has a fourspeed manual transmission. It was, at least once, driven to a top speed of 206 miles an hour. The $1.3 million price paid by GM includes a 10% commission for Barrett-Jackson. GM will add the CERV I to its Heritage Collection
Lowering Your Standards Won’t Get You Your Dream Relationship; Setting New Standards Might
By Demez White, Feature Writer
I
don’t care if it’s a special, a documentary, or a book, relationship conversations will always sell because no matter how great our life is, it’s ten times greater with the love of someone else. I’ve taken a step back from writing these types of articles in the past year because I realized that most of the conversations we have about relationships come from a perfect place, an ideal place or a place of hurt. Men give advice to women on how to be better women. Men give advice to women on how to find and keep a man. Men give advice to women on how to dress and act and on what to say. In what world does that make any sense? The biggest issue I have is when men tell women to lower their standards. When a man tells a woman that she should lower her standards, what he’s really saying is, “Why worry if you’re happy or attracted to your man, just be happy you have one.” Notice we don’t ever ask men to do the same. A guy can be 5’4, have a mediocre job and have a receding hairline and no one tells him that he should lower his standards when he wants a Rhianna look-alike that has a good job, is a gourmet chef, and loves sex. We expect women to settle for the bare minimum and when they don’t we tell them to shut up, stop complaining, and accept the date offer from that weird guy with the body odor. There’s no need to lower your standards whether you’re a man looking for a beauty queen or a woman looking for a knight in shining armor. What you should do though is set new standards that exceed your old ones. Life is too short to look 16
in Sterling Heights, Mich. The Hertitage Center is, essentially, an invitation only museum of important GM cars open only to GM employees, their families and invited guests. A later GM test car called CERV II was sold by RM Auctions in 2013 for $1.1 million. It is not clear who purchased that car.

back and realize you’ve reached another milestone and didn’t have someone to celebrate it with. I’ve seen men have the perfect woman, someone that is everything they’ve ever wanted and they walked away because she wasn’t “perfect.” They walked away because she texted too much or wanted too many hugs. I’ve seen women not even give men a chance because he didn’t talk enough on the first date or lived at home with his parents. I’m not saying accept any and everything but I am saying, raise your standards, raise them by looking pass things you checked off on your list and have an actual conversation. You would be surprised what you learn by allowing someone to open up. As much as we want a finished product, not everyone will be and www.StyleMagazine.com
you don’t have to accept that but at least open the door. You may want a woman that’s a size 4 so you close the door on a woman that’s bigger than that not knowing she was a size 4 two years ago. Stress, work, depression; that caused her to gain weight and once she gained the weight she lost some confidence. Getting to know her, getting to know that story, that is raising your standards. Not lowering them. You aren’t trying to change her, you’re giving her the love and confidence she lost and she’s just becoming who she always was. Men can be devastated by divorce or parents dying or losing a job that was his identity. Asking you for a phone number or out on a date may have been the hardest thing in the world for him but he did it. Having a cup of coffee with a man doesn’t mean you’re accepting a marriage proposal or accepting that he’s not where you’d like him to be in life. But you won’t know any of that without a conversation, without raising your standards. I haven’t written an actual novel in four years. A part of me told myself I was perfecting my craft or learning to be a better writer. Maybe that’s true but it can’t be a coincidence that the motivation and encouragement of a woman has me putting out two books in the first couple months of 2017. There’s no doubt that you can be an incredibly dope single and there’s no doubt that you shouldn’t hold out for what you want. Just remember, putting down your checklist and actually getting to know someone may unlock potential you never knew existed.

With ID Ideology, we are getting them out of their old t-shirts and shorts, and into performance gear that will help take them to the next level.” ID Ideology is about action and motion, and the pieces in the collection are designed to maximize performance under all conditions. The range includes sleeveless, short- and long-sleeved tees, training shorts, running leggings, as well as track jackets and track pants. Select pieces are equipped with technology to facilitate and enhance the execution of dynamic movement— RapiDry technology, 4 Way Stretch, ventilation, water resistance, reflective panels, and body mapping in high sweat rate regions allow every man to be the best athlete he can be, rain or shine, day or night. The assortment also includes tech hoodies and joggers, as well as lightweight shell jackets that are wind and water resistant, as well as breathable and durable. These pieces round out
urbane aesthetic that projects strength. The days of wearing worn-out clothing to the gym are over; ID Ideology has the pieces to make men look and perform like the athletes they are. ID Ideology encourages men to tap into their potential to accomplish the seemingly impossible. The marketing campaign “Accepting All Athletes” can be followed on social media and highlights people who have worked hard to reach their goals. One inspiring individual featured in the ID Ideology campaign is Redmond Ramos, a former Navy Corpsman combat medic with the
Marines who lost his left leg while serving in Afghanistan. Undeterred by his injury, Ramos took the challenge and turned it into an opportunity, pushing himself to medal at the Warrior Games an astonishing 11 months after losing his leg. Ramos has also won medals at the Invictus Games and Endeavor Games, and was the inaugural champion of CBS Sports’ Triumph Games. Joe Moravsky, a 27-year-old meteorologist from Sherman, CT, is a top athlete of NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” and Esquire Network’s “Team Ninja Warrior.” Moravsky’s determination, strength and commitment are hallmarks of ID Ideology, and he represents the everyday athlete in all of us. Working as a weatherman, Moravsky also teaches gymnastics and parkour, all while balancing being a father and husband. Isaiah Rivera is a 19-yearold student at the University of Central Florida who doubles as a professional basketball dunker. Rivera’s impressive and jaw-dropping dunks are the result of hours of practice and conditioning to fine tune and perfect his skills. All three men have unique backgrounds and are prime examples of ID Ideology’s core belief that everyone has a titan within. ID Ideology extends the already existing Ideology line of popular women’s, plus-size, and girls’ affordable a c t i v e w e a r. Product from the ID Ideology collection is priced from $25 to $70, and available at 250 Macy’s stores and on macys. com.
