The Growing Racial Wage Gap
P
By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
resident Donald Trump keeps boasting about the low black unemployment rate, although African-Americans still suffer nearly twice the unemployment rate as whites do.What Trump never mentions is the growing racial wealth gap: the economic disparity between whites and people of color that plagues this country. The statistics from the Federal Reserve are clear. Median black household net worth -- what assets the black households in the middle have after subtracting debts -- is $17,600. That of the typical white household is nearly 10 times greater at $171,000. The reason for this shocking disparity is clear. As an economic letter from authors of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco notes, “For the past several decades, black workers have fared worse than white workers in the U.S. labor market. Despite government policies designed to reduce or eliminate racial disparities, black workers continue to experience lower wages and higher unemployment rates than Whites. Black workers still earn less than their white counterparts in a worsening trend that holds true even after accounting for differences in age, education, job type, and geography.” Trump is trumpeting rising wages but in the

hiladelphia Eagles wide receiver Torrey Smith told CNN Tonight Tuesday “there are plenty of guys who said they do not plan on going” to the White House should the team participate in the traditional visit to commemorate their Super Bowl win.Championship winning teams visiting the White House is a tradition that dates back to the 60s. he Eagles defeated the New England Patriots on Sunday and are expected to be honored by President Donald Trump later this year, but so far, Smith, safety Malcolm Jenkins and defensive end Chris Long have indicated that they won’t attend. “For me, it’s not just about politics,” Smith said. “If I told you that I was invited to a party by an individual I believe is sexist or has no respect for women or I told you that this individual has said offensive things towards many minority groups ... this individual also called my peers and my friends SOB’s, you would understand why I wouldn’t want to go to that party. Why is it any different when the person has title of President of the United States.” Smith was referring to Trump’s comments at a September rally, where he launched a war against players who take a knee during the National Anthem to protest social and

first year of the Trump administration, the median weekly earnings of African-Americans went down, not up, when adjusted for inflation. Forty-five percent of black families own homes, compared to 73 percent of white families. African-Americans were the hardest hit by the financial collapse, in part because banks targeted the worst liar’s loans to African-American and Latino families, assuring them that they could refinance when the value of their homes rose. When the bottom fell out, the families found themselves underwater, and bankers, like current Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, then made big bucks foreclosing on the victims. The measure of this, as the report Foreclosed details, can be seen in the fact that the wealth of African-American families had recovered to its pre-crash level by 2016 -- not counting the value of their homes. But the average home equity for African-Americans was still $16,700 less. The very working and middle class families that reached to buy a home were still struggling to get back to where they were in 2007. Over the same period -- from 2007 to 2016, the average wealth of the top 1 percent increased by a mere $4.9 million.
The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is far from a perfect health care plan, but it did allow African-Americans to lower the number of uninsured among the non-elderly by 1.8 million. Trump and Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare and to throw millions off Medicaid will disproportionately hurt African-Americans and Latinos.
We will explore how the workers’ pension funds -- from universities, from unions, from public employees, from churches -- could be used safely to green line the neighborhoods that are too often red-lined. With federal guarantees, real investment could rebuild neighborhoods, seed small businesses, build affordable housing and create jobs.
Inequality is still getting worse. As the Pew Research Center reports, the typical wealth of upper-income families was seven times that of middle income families in 2016, a gap that has doubled since 1983.
With the tax cut projected to add more than $1 trillion to the deficit over a decade, the Republican-led Congress is looking to slash, not expand, federal support for working and poor people and impoverished rural and urban communities. With federal guarantees and more independent pension fund management, new capital for vital investments might be freed up.
Similarly, upper-income families have 75 times the wealth of lower-income families in 2016, compared with 28 times the wealth in 1983. And African-American and Latino families are disproportionately more likely to be among the low income families. Trump is not to blame for this disparity, just as he is not the reason for current low unemployment rates. The question is what will the administration do going forward? This week, I will travel to New York where the Rainbow Push Wall Street project will convene bankers, religious and civil rights leaders, economists and union leaders to discuss the growing racial wealth gap.
If Trump were serious about dealing with the wealth gap, he would be leading this discussion, not ignoring it. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at stylemagazine. com.

racial injustice. Trump lambasted team owners for allowing the protests to take place, urged fans to walk out of games and told owners they should respond to the protesting players by saying, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!” Smith is part of the Players Coalition, a group of NFL players negotiating with the league to address the concerns of those who protest. He said that Trump’s rhetoric on race, particularly the President’s response to the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, “helped” put the conversation around racism in America in the spotlight.Although Smith has not taken a knee to protest, he said that former San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernick was a “genius” for doing what he did because “people talked about it in a way that we never heard and he never hurt anyone by doing it.” Kaepernick is credited with starting the movement. “I have a lot of respect for him. You know, Colin Kaepernick is a person that history is going to look back on like he’s a legend,” he said. “He’s a legend to me and I’ll have his back any day of the week.”

The signed pledge, which was presented to the Houston Police Officer’s Union, came just days after Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo’s called for adding 2,000 police officers to the streets of Houston, despite a crime rate that was on the decline last year. Houston Police Officer’s Union President Joe Gamaldi echoled Acedvedo’s sentiments during a press conference. “I don’t think it’s any secret that the Houston Police Department has been doing more with less for far too long,” Gamaldi said.

everal African-American Democratic state lawmakers criticized Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller for a tweet referencing slavery during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. Referencing the likely release of a classified memo on the Russia investigation that Republicans say shows improper use of surveillance by the FBI, Miller wrote that “Democrats haven’t been this upset over Republicans releasing something since Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves!” Two state senators and six state representatives wrote a letter to Miller, saying his tweet “indicates poor judgment and a temperament not befitting of a public servant. It is our hope that few find your remarks humorous and that most will find them repulsive.”

Dozens of students carrying signs with messages such as “Don’t defend racism” chanted “Hey hey, ho ho, Connor Clegg has got to go,” before the student government hearing began. After being addressed by mostly angry students over nearly two hours, Clegg said he would announce whether he will step down within a week.

federal lawsuit accusing an establishment in Houston’s Midtown neighborhood of racial discrimination has been disposed. According to recent Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas records, U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison issued an order of dismissal in the suit against Gaslamp, now known as Midtown 360, on Feb. 1. The Justice Department and defendants Ayman Jarrah and Land Guardian, Inc in response to joint motion to dismiss submit the order. e’s the local man who fooled a hate group into accepting him as one of their own, and now, his incredible tale is headed to the big screen. In 1978, Ron Stallworth while working as a detective in Colorado Springs, Colorado — went undercover as a member of Ku Klux Klan. The Austin High School graduate posed as a white man on the phone, communicating with Klan leaders like David Duke. At KKK meetings, a white police officer would stand in for Stallworth, trying to say as little as possible. Over the course of seven months, Stallworth was able to gather intelligence on the Klan and thwart several crossing burnings. Acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee is currently directing a film based on Stallworth’s 2014 book “Black Klansman.”

rosecutors say a probation officer in North Texas who extorted cash from Spanish-speaking immigrants after threatening deportation must serve three years in federal prison. Officials say 35-year-old David Delgado was sentenced and ordered to pay $2,900. The Dallas resident pleaded guilty to use of interstate facility to commit travel act. Delgado was an officer with Dallas County Community Supervision and Corrections. Authorities say that in 2016, he was supervising someone without legal U.S. status who was on probation. Records show that Delgado used a cellphone to arrange a meeting at a Dallas restaurant and then demanded $1,600 more in fees plus additional community service “to help keep immigration officials away.”

T
he idea for the app came after 15-year-old Hannah Lucas fainted due to her postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a condition that affects circulation. The episode left the teen terrified of being alone, which led to depression, anxiety, and to self-harming behaviors. This caused her to wonder “What if there was a button I could press and someone would immediately know I was not OK?” This question led to her and her brother, Charlie Lucas, to create the notOK App™, which officially launched on Jan. 31. The app is literally a button for help. When the burdens of stress and anxiety can be too much to bear, the app allows users to alert their pre-selected group of emergency contacts with ease.

Using preserved remains, modern technology, and painstaking artistry, a team led by Expedition Unknown‘s Josh Gates presented a reconstruction of what King Tut’s mother would have looked like in her full royal regalia. The colorful headdress, bejeweled collar, and intricate earrings are all befitting of an Egyptian queen, but the accessories seem to be about all that was done right on the bust. This version of Nefertiti has skin that looks freshly tanned as opposed to a skin tone of someone born with sun kissed pigment in her DNA.

HISD has seen a decline in student enrollment and is planning for a further decline for the coming school year, which will mean a decrease in state funding. The district also anticipates the storm will have a significant impact on the city’s property values, which will be released in April 2018. HISD’s main source of funding is property tax dollars. To date, the district has received no indication of how much and when they’ll be reimbursed for Harvey-related expenditures.

Beauty brands owned by the Kardashians are particularly feeling the heat with the rise of Fenty Beauty. Late last month, research by Slice Intelligence revealed that the beauty line was well on its way of beating blockbuster revenues of Kylie Jenner’s Kylie Beauty and Kim Kardashian’s KKW. Slice Intelligence found that while Kylie Cosmetics – which was launched two years ago – had the highest yearly sales, Fenty Beauty – which was launched in September – had five times more sales in its first month of operation and was 34 percent higher the following month.

Above the Water: How Black Businesses Swim in 2018
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
“
If race has no history, if it has no worth while tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated,” said Dr. Carter G. Woodson some sixty-five years ago. Fearing the African American story would be forgotten fueled the life’s work of the historian, author, and journalist. He was among the first to examine African American history. Over the course of his life, he engrossed himself in the subject matter writing over twelve books on the topic. His thirst of wanting to know everything possible and the quest of his personal mission for the

world to never ignore the story of African Americans compelled him to establish the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History with a few others. The stout academician lobbied schools and organizations to study the history of African Americans. This eventually led to the beginning of Negro History Week in 1926. Since then President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas were both responsible for the abolishment of slavery and had birthdays in February, Woodson thought it fitting for the weeklong celebration to occur during the second week in February. Presidents that followed supported the week as it evolved into a month and was

officially recognized as such by then President Gerald Ford. In a speech about the observance of Black History Month on February 10, 1976, then President Ford said, “We can seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since then every President that has followed has celebrated how African Americans are woven into the fabric of American history and culture. In Houston, there are many places to learn about the stony road African Americans have traveled. Below are just a few places to explore it.

Matthews, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is the only museum dedicated to honoring the legacy of African American soldiers from the Revolutionary War to the present. Visitors to the museum can see various exhibitions on No Man’s Land, Vietnam, Artillery, World War I and World War II, Tech Wall, and the Forgotten Faces of Ft. Craig. In addition, Buffalo Soldiers National Museum has a variety of programs that travel to educate the masses about the Buffalo Soldiers.
*Houston Museum of African American Culture The Houston Museum of African Amer-
ican Culture collects, conserves, explores, interprets, and exhibits the material and intellectual culture of Africans and African Americans in Houston, Texas, the southwest and the African Diaspora according to their website. HMAAC offers a variety of programs and learning opportunities for visitors of all ages and backgrounds, from guided tours to film screenings, to hands-on arts and craft activities! We strive to provide a variety of entertaining and enlightening learning experiences, to serve as a resource for Houston’s diverse landscape of communities, to broaden public awareness of arts and culture through the African American lens and explore how other cultures intersect with African American history, art and culture.
*The African American Library at the Gregory School Opening its doors in 2009, the library is the first of its kind in Houston and is a Special Collections Library within the Houston Public Library system. The library is housed in the Edgar M. Gregory School, which served as the first public school for African Americans in Houston. The library
serves as a resource to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich history and culture of African Americans in Houston, the surrounding region, and the African Diaspora. The historic building that house the library was reconditioned to serve as a repository and provides an incomparable variety of resources.
*Project Row Houses Project Row Houses is a community platform that enriches lives through art with an emphasis on cultural identity and its impact on the urban landscape. We engage neighbors, artists, and enterprises in collective creative action to help materialize sustainable opportunities in marginalized communities. PRH occupies a significant footprint in Houston’s Historic Third Ward, one of the city’s oldest African-American neighborhoods. The site encompasses five city blocks and houses 39 structures that serve as home base to a variety of community enriching initiatives, art programs, and neighborhood development activities.
measure put in place by President Lincoln in 1863 instructing all remaining rebellious states to recognize their slaves as free individuals, enabled newly-freed African Americans to begin creating their own communities across the country, many of them known as “Freedmen Town”. Many Freedmen’s towns flourished including Houston’s Fourth Ward. Large numbers of African Americans left the east Texas plantations and arrived in Houston in 1866, settling along Buffalo *Freedmen’s Town The Emancipation Proclamation, the war Bayou’s southern banks. The community
thrived, designated the “Fourth Ward” during a period in which Houston divided the city into political districts. Fourth Ward citizens paved the streets with bricks they made by hand and built a neighborhood, both physically and culturally, by utilizing their skills. These are just a few of the gems in Houston to celebrate Black History not just in February but all yearlong.

olin Kaepernick has reportedly raised $20,000 for a group named after convicted cop killer and former Black Liberation Army member Assata Shakur, who broke out of jail and fled to Cuba. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback announced that comedian Hannibal Buress and actress Yara Shahidi would both donate $10,000 to Assata’s Daughters, which says it “carries on the tradition of radical liberatory activism encompassed by Assata Shakur.” The charity is a “collective of radical Black women’ affiliated with Black Lives Matter.”

Was Dennis Edwards Abused By His Wife Before His Passing? [Black America Web]
n the wake of Temptations’ frontman Dennis Edwards death, new abuse allegations have emerged against his wife, St. Louis Dispatch reports. The 74-year-old died February 1st after complications with meningitis, but adult protective services investigators claim he was physically assaulted before his death by his wife, Brenda. Details of the report claim Brenda attempted to suffocate Dennis by “holding his head facedown in bed,” and accused Brenda of taking his hearing aids out when he was “bed bound and immobile.” Before Dennis’ death, an emergency protective order was granted against Brenda on Jan. 18th. Once Dennis passed, the order barring Brenda to have contact with him was cancelled. In a statement, Brenda denied wrongdoing.

How Justin Timberlake’s Prince ‘Tribute’ Ended Up Being So Disrespectful [Black America Web]
lot of folks are not happy with Raven Symone in the wake of her reposting a pic (above) with harsh comments about some of the biggest names in hip hop. The photo (re-posted over the weekend) featured industry heavyweights such as Jay Z,Diddy, T.I., Steve Stoute and others at the Roc Nation Grammy party last week. Like we said, her comment about it was not complimentary, to say the least. “A group of so called ‘successful’ black men who became rich and famous through perpetuating the worst black stereotypes to the ears and eyes of the entire planet…” the caption read. Symoné has since deleted the post.
J
ustin Timberlake’s Super Bowl performance that featured a hologram-ish image of Prince went directly against the estate of the legendary singer, who friends say would never have wanted his image used in such a manner. While many saw the gesture as a fitting tribute in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis, others called blatant disrespect. Longtime Prince collaborator Sheila E tweeted late Saturday night that Timberlake had assured her he wouldn’t use a hologram out “of respect for Prince & the Purple fans.” Less than 24 hours later, there Timberlake was shouting out Prince and looking up to a larger than life projection while singing “I Would Die 4 U.” The disbelief from fans was swift.
SPORTS “Philly Special”Philadelphia Eagles Pulls Upset in Super Bowl LII
S
By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer
ince 1976, the city of Philadelphia has been associated with boxer Rocky Balboa. He is the character that was created by actor Sylvester Stallone that depicts every person that has overcome adversity and obstacles in their life to achieve success. This past Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles channeled their inner Rocky to defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII 41-33. “I ain’t never been a part of nothing like this. I ain’t seen nothing like this,” said Eagles Safety Malcolm Jenkins in the locker room after the game. That win marks the first Super Bowl victory in franchise history and brings the Eagles season full circle. They went 7-9 last year and finished dead last in the NFC East. Like they have been doing all season, the Eagles relied upon the knowledge and wisdom of their second year head coach, Doug Pederson. His great offensive mind was needed when Philly found themselves in two tough fourth down situations that could have changed the game. He believed in his backup quarterback Nick Foles when they lost their starter Carson Wentz early on in the season. Foles, was brilliant in the game, which led him
to win MVP honors, but it was his crucial fourth and goal play with one minute left in the first half that set the tone for the rest of the game. After being stopped on third down, Foles and Pederson decided to go with a trick play on fourth down called the “Philly Special.” A play they had designed earlier in the week to use for an occasion just like this. It didn’t take much for the Eagles QB to convince his coach. Once he said the play, Pederson paused and then responded, “Yeah, let’s do it. Let’s do it.” With the quarterback standing near the right tackle giving fake signal calls, the ball was directly snapped to running back Corey Clement, who then pitched the ball to back up tight end Trey Burton, who found a wide open Foles in the end zone for the score. It takes a lot to catch a Bill Belichick coached team off guard, but that’s exactly what happened. “Obviously, we didn’t do a good enough job coaching, missed a lot of opportunities offensively in the first half, and didn’t play good enough defense,” said the Patriots head coach who lost for only the third time in eight Super Bowl appearances. New England didn’t lose the game by lack of
Philadelphia Eagles effort by the 2017 NFL Regular Season MVP Tom Brady (505 yards passing and three touchdowns), but his turnover late in the fourth quarter allowed the Eagles to score the deciding points on a field goal and win the game. “Losing sucks. If you want to be world champs, you have to play in this game,” said Brady speaking to a room full of
reporters. As the confetti fell from the roof, the Eagles players watched in amazement while the Lombardi Trophy made its way to the presentation stage. They all waited to hear that one sentence that had eluded them for 50 years and two previous Super Bowl appearances. “The Philadelphia Eagles are World Champions!”

Cardiac Arrest vs. Heart Attack vs. Heart Failure: What’s the Difference?
M
any people tend to confuse and interchange the terms “heart attack” and “cardiac arrest,” but it is very important to note that these are two completely different medical conditions. Understanding these differences can help save lives.
What is Cardiac Arrest? A cardiac arrest is a sudden collapse in an individual who is non-responsive, and who has abnormal breathing. Abnormal breathing is either agonal respiration, or gasping, or not breathing at all. In sudden cardiac arrest, the heart stops completely. In this situation, it is important to call 9-1-1, and to administer CPR if neces-

sary. Unless treated, a person suffering from cardiac arrest can die within minutes.
What is a Heart Attack?
A heart attack occurs when the arteries supplying the heart become blocked. The first branches of the aorta sit on top of the heart like a crown. They’re called coronary arteries. If you block these branches, the heart doesn’t get enough blood. The result is a myocardial infarction, which is the technical term for a heart attack.
What is Heart Failure? Also called congestive heart failure, heart failure is a condition where the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of the body. Heart failure is almost always a chronic, long-term condition, although it
can sometimes develop suddenly. The condition may affect the right side, the left side, or both sides of the heart: • Right-sided heart failure means the right ventricle of the heart loses its pumping function. • Left-sided heart failure means the heart’s ability to pump blood forward from the left side of the heart is decreased. The left side of the heart normally receives blood rich in oxygen from the lungs and pumps it to the remainder of the body. Heart failure is often classified as either systolic (your heart cannot pump or eject blood very well) or diastolic (your heart doesn’t fill up with blood). Both of these problems mean the heart is no longer able to pump enough blood out to the rest of your body, especially

when you exercise or are active.
In Case of a Heart Emergency
Despite the differences between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, both of these conditions share one extremely important detail: in the case of either, it is crucial that you seek medical attention immediately. Otherwise, further damage to the heart muscle can occur and an irregular heart rhythm may develop. If you think someone is suffering from a heart emergency, call 911 immediately. The person may need emergency care such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or electrical shock (defibrillation) until emergency medical personnel arrive. At the hospital, doctors can perform tests to determine the specific heart condition in question and decide on the best treatment.
