recent column in D.C. based paper The National Journal titled Criminal-Justice Reform, Brought to You by CPAC describes in detail how prison reform became a key theme among conservatives at their yearly gathering in Washington last week. The Heritage Foundation, an ultra conservative think tank funded heavily by the liberal archenemy Koch brothers, is now aligned with a cause Democrats and minority grassroots organizations have long championed. Libertarian Senator Rand Paul is now a supporter of pending legislation in the United States Senate that amends mandatory minimum sentencing laws to give judges more flexibility and several Republican leaders have joined him to support similar reforms. I have consistently said that reforming our nation’s prison system

ineteen people die every day in the United States waiting for a kidney transplant, most waiting 7 to 9 years. The team at MatchingDonors.com is working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen by finding altruistic living organ donors for people needing kidney transplants. The average patient gets their transplant through MatchingDonors.com within six months of signing up on the website. Philip Cunningham a 70-yearold husband, father and grandfather from Scarsdale, New York needed a lifesaving kidney transplant. Philip thought all hope was lost for him; if he didn’t receive a lifesaving kidney transplant soon he would die. Besides having his own medical ailments Philip was also taking care of his ailing wife who suffers with lung disease, and also trying to enjoy the little time he thought he had left with his 4-year-old granddaughter. He thought that there were no other options left to save his life. He knew he would never last the 7 to 9 year wait for a deceased kidney donor from the government’s waiting list. He thought he was destined to waste away and die; staying on dialysis for 5 hours a day three days week. Then one day his neighbor told him about a great website named

Conservatives Work to Fix U.S. Prisons is the right thing to do morally. In addition, research shows that investing in comprehensive prison reforms will save tax-payer dollars and improve outcomes for ex-offenders. Traditionally, Democrats have made up the majority of policy-makers calling for legislation to reduce incarceration and re-arrest rates among inner-city and low-income youth. However, now faced with increasingly strained state and federal budgets - Republicans are starting to realize that we must change the way our nation’s prison systems are run. Mandatory minimum sentencing has contributed to a steep rise in our federal prison population. More than 14 percent of Americans are behind bars and the federal prison system has more than quadrupled since 1980. First time non-violent drug offenders can often serve long-term prison sentences with no option for parole. At the Conservative Political Action Conference, Senator Rand Paul acknowledged drug related sentences “disproportionately affect African-Americans”. African-Americans and Latino-Americans account make up over 58 percent of our prisons, despite being only 25 percent of the American population. However,

the true rallying point for many conservatives is the reality that these longterm prison sentences and a growing prison population are not helping to reduce crime. In 2008, President George W. Bush signed the Second Chance Act into law. This law written by Democratic Representative Danny Davis and Republican Senator Rob Portman offered federal grant funding to state and local government agencies and nonprofit organizations to support innovative efforts to reduce re-arrest rates and overall prison populations. In my home state the Michigan Prisoner Reentry Initiative expanded its parole programs and invested in transition plans that included employment guidance, mentoring and counseling services for ex-offenders. Between 2005 and 2011 Michigan saw 5,000 fewer ex-offenders return to prison. In addition, between 2002 and 2008 Michigan’s prison population fell by over 12 percent and the state closed more than 20 correctional facilities. Compelling research that proves investment in prison reform and ex-offender reentry pays off is an attractive sell to budget conscious Republicans who were previously tone-

deaf to widespread dysfunction in U.S. prisons. America has one of the highest incarceration rates of any industrialized nation in the world and leaders in both parties are beginning to realize that this trend is not sustainable. States across the country are running programs similar to Michigan’s and they have witnessed comparable results. Some politicians have been reluctant to support programs helping ex-offenders, because they want to be tough on crime. During election cycles being “soft on crime” is never a good thing. However, the facts show that our current policies on crime are not effective and far too expensive. Our public officials need to be smart on crime and invest in programs that will allow our prison systems to offer true rehabilitation. This includes career development and mentoring to help ex-offenders readjust to society and avoid being arrested again. It also includes investment in youth violence prevention with similar programs focused on education, job training, and mentoring. As Republicans are beginning to realize, these commitments will ultimately lead to less American’s behind bars and long-term costs savings.

John answered Philip’s plea instantly and was excited to help. He wanted to do this because he knew it was the right thing to do. In his words he did it because it would not affect him, but somebody else. John had found out about MatchingDonors through a documentary on television and knew he had to be a part of this very special thing. He was willing to risk his life to save another; a total stranger for him it was that simple. MatchingDonors.com was launched in January of 2004 as an Internet service based in Canton, Massachusetts. Patients on transplant lists put their profiles on the website, and potential donors browse the site for a life they want to help save. Donors are not compensated, since it is against the law to have any financial benefit from organ donation. Since the inception of MatchingDonors.com, directed living organ donations has increased to historic numbers. MatchingDonors.com is now the largest living donor organization in the world.

Robin Hood of Children’s Wear

ative Houstonian CeCe Hendricks has truly found her niche in children’s fashion consignment. Hendricks’ L.A.-based online consignment shop, SpoiledFashionz, is quickly becoming one of the strongest brands of its kind. SpoiledFashionz.com is described as “the ideal one-stop-shop for moms and dads” looking for the perfect outfits to get their kids ready for school, special occasions, holidays, and daily wear. With brands like Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Jr. Gaultier, Scotch & Soda, Gucci, DKNY, Michael Kors, and Louis Vuitton in stock, SpoiledFashionz is anything but “child’s play.” The site also has a strong Hollywood connection. Celebrity moms like Tishina Arnold, Garcelle Beauvais, and Nicole Murphy donate about 30% of the clothes you’ll find on the SpoiledFashionz site. Hendricks’ unique business started like many great fashion stories do: with a trip to Europe. “I used to live in Europe with my husband, and I watched the way the kids dressed out there. The kids dressed amazing,” said

Cece

Hendricks. Hendricks says that the difference she saw between European fashion and American fashion is that parents focus more about what they’re wearing than what their kids have on. “We [Americans] know how to dress ourselves. Our kids? Not so much,” she said. This inspired Hendricks to bring high fashion stateside. Hendricks’ business focuses on bringing designer brands and international labels to American children’s fashion market. “I did my marketing research, and realized that nobody was doing what I was doing,” she said. “There are some consignment stores for kids, but

they are consigning things from Old Navy.” There’s no “guess and check” with this consignment shop. You can be sure that everything on the SpoiledFashionz site is of top quality. “Everything I sell is either new, or very gently worn. I don’t accept holes or anything without labels,” said Hendricks. “I don’t accept anything with any discoloration.” There is also no shortage of brand names on the site. “Burberry and Gucci sells out really quickly,” said Hendricks. “Armani sells a lot. The only label that I sell that’s a little less than a high end label is Ralph Lauren.” Hendricks credits her Houston roots with cultivating some of her passion for fashion and style. “I would say my sense of style came from my mother. She worked really hard. She was a single parent and she raised 3 kids, but she always gave us the best of everything,” Hendricks said. “When Guess was coming out, we had Guess. I had my first Louis Vuitton purse at 13. She always put more energy into our clothes versus hers.” That passion for inspiring young people to have an interest in style has surely translated into Hendricks’ life as a mother and businesswoman. She enjoys dressing her 9-yearold son and hosting her annual “Face of Spoiled” fashion show where she invites aspiring child models to showcase merchandise in front of a panel of celebrity judges for a chance to win a modeling contract. On top of being a dedicated mother and business owner, she’s also a philanthropist. Hendricks gives 10% of her yearly net profits to Halle Berry’s charity of choice, domestic violence intervention program, the Jenesse Center. Hendricks donates the clothes she doesn’t sell to the center, as well. Eventually, Hendricks hopes to expand her business to include a storefront in Beverly Hills. But for now, she enjoys the wide range of people she can reach with her business online. “I wanted to open myself up to the masses,” she said of her decision to start the store online, rather than with a brick-and-mortar shop. “I feel like I’m helping people. I’m like the Robin Hood of children’s wear!” Visit SpoiledFashionz.com for more information.

Lakewood Church’s Safe Cracked By Thieves

Soon after members at Lakewood Church ended worship services thieves cracked the church’s safe taking with them $600K. Houston Police Department has confirmed that $200,000 in cash and $400,000 in checks were taken. Notifications immediately went out to the megachurch’s membership of over 40,000 to be watchful over their financial information for fraudulent charges. Lakewood is working with police to continue the investigation and their insurance company to restore funds to church.

The headline of teacher/student relationships appears far too often. Sadly, it has happened again. A picture of thirty-five year old Fort Bend ISD band teacher EduEduardo Hernandez ardo Eli Hernandez with the student cuddling was shared on social media and sparked the investigation. A letter notifying parents about the investigation has been sent out.

Amy Thielen Brings Back Midwestern Comfort Food for a 2nd Season of “Heartland Table”

here is NOTHING like some good ole’ comfort food, and according to Amy Thielen, comfort food reigns supreme in Midwestern cooking. Food Network is bringing back this adventurous cook for a second season of “Heartland Table” and this season there is no holding back. Amy will be pulling out all the stops and cooking up dishes from pork meatloaf to an interesting parsley salad. I had the opportunity

my family, which was so much fun! In one of the episodes my cousin Matt visits me and brings ½ of a local farm hog. We process the hog and then make an awesome pork meatloaf. After that I make our grandmother’s macerated apple pie with a leaf lard crust made out of rendered leaf lard from the pig. Pork in your dessert, not bad!

to speak with Amy about the new season, what she will be cooking for spring, and her favorite Midwestern comfort dish.

MC: What about Midwestern comfort food do you feel resonates so well with your viewers? AT: I think that I have a really good balance. The way that I eat, I don’t ever make myself feel bad for what I am eating in terms of indulgent foods. I like to counter the richness of my cuisine with lots of garden produce, lots of vegetables and lots of salads. I think viewers like that I am able to mix the indulgent with the healthy. This season I have a new recipe for a parsley salad made with 5 or 6 cups of parsley. It is almost like a Tabbouleh but with rice and toasted almonds. This dish is very healthy and extremely addictive. I like to keep something like that in my fridge at all times to counter all of the rich foods I eat.

Marcus Carter: We are so excited about the 2nd season of Heartland Table, what can your viewers expect? Amy Thielen: Lots of delicious food! We packed each episode with 3 sometimes 5 or 6 recipes. This season gives the viewer a glimpse of my house and

MC: How and where do you find inspiration for your recipes? AT: When I am looking at the Midwest for inspiration I am looking at recipes from my grandmother’s era to present day. I enjoy reinventing dishes from the 70’s and 80’s because they bring back great mem-

ories from my childhood. I am also looking to the future with the influx of new people who are bringing their ingredients and customs to Midwestern cooking. In St. Paul for instance, there is a large Hmong community and their eating habits are becoming part of the thread of the Midwest as well. MC: In this Spring season what type of ingredients can one expect to see on your “Heartland Table”? AT: Definitely rhubarb! It is very common in the Midwest and the first thing that comes in for spring. I think lamb is an excellent meat for the Spring grill, especially after we have had such a long cold winter. I also love those early greens that sprout in the yard. There is a reason they are around and that is because they are health tonics. I make a soup with the greens, but please don’t think it is all the way healthy because of course I added some bacon! MC: What is your all time favorite Midwestern comfort dish? AT: There are so many, but probably pork chops. When my husband comes through the door and I am making pork chops he is a happy man! In my book I have a recipe for breaded pork chops that I remember my mother making. She would dip them in breading then fry them and…OMG! I stuff mine with a little bit of good smoked ham and some cheese, but you really don’t have to do anything to a good pork chop. Read the full story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

A Revisit with Nia: The Long and The Short of It

tunningly-attractive leading lady Nia Long returned to the big screen last fall in the highly-anticipated sequel The Best Man Holiday where she reunited with original cast mates Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut and Harold Perrineau. Early last year, she joined the all-star cast of Showtime’s “House of Lies” alongside Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. Nia made her film debut in Boyz n The Hood, a poignant picture portraying social problems in inner city Los Angeles. She subsequently starred in Friday opposite Ice Cube and Chris Tucker, as well as Love Jones, which won the prestigious Audience Award at Sundance. Nia’s notable film roles also include Soul Food, Alfie, The Best Man, Are We There Yet?, Big Momma’s House 1 and 2, Stigmata, The Broken Hearts Club and Made In America. Nia’s portrayal of Officer Sasha Monroe on the hit crime drama “Third Watch” netted her a couple of NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Drama series. Her other TV accomplishments include “The Fresh Prince of BelAir,” “Boston Legal,” “Judging Amy,” and “Big Shots.” In addition to her film and television work, Nia’s passion lies in serving her community. With her family roots firmly planted in Trinidad, Long’s long term goals

are to connect women in the US to those of the island and to mentor young girls to regain their self-esteem. Additionally, she lends her support to Black Girls Rock, an organization that promotes the arts for young women of color and encourages dialogue on the ways women of color are portrayed in the media. And in 2012, she was named an official surrogate to the Barack Obama reelection campaign. Nia loves to cook fresh, farmer’s market meals with a twist of her Trinidadian heritage. When she’s not juggling between her career and motherhood, she enjoys staying active by doing Pilates, boxing, hiking, and horseback riding. She also takes pleasure in traveling and experiencing different cultures throughout the world. One of her favorite locations to visit is Jamaica, a place she calls her second home where she can reflect and refuel. Nia and Juicy Culture talk about co-starring as May in The Single Moms Club opposite her son Massai, as well as Amy Smart, Zulay Henao, Terry Crews, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Cocoa Brown.

Nia Long: Of course, Susie. How are you? SS/JC: Great! And you? NL: I’m good! SS/JC: Jumping right in what interested you in The Single Moms Club? NL: The title alone. I think it’s a world we haven’t explored on film. And I feel that single mommies don’t get enough praise and accolades. I’ve had firsthand experience. My mother was a single mom. As far as I’m concerned, mommies, in general, rule the world. And single mothers just take it to a whole other level. SS/JC: Congratulations on the latest Essence Magazine cover! NL: Oh, thank you!

Texas Republican Primary Victors Won Pushing Strong to the Political Right

exas Republican Primary winners from Tuesday, March 4 election results were most often those that campaigned furthest to the conservative right touting state senate and state house records to prove to vote base extremes bona fides on everything from immigration to abortion. The May 27 Lieutenant Governor run off features third term David Dewhurst on defense in his race against Harris County State Senator Dan Patrick. Patrick, expected to force Dewhurst into a runoff, shocked political pundits by climbing to the top and clobbering Dewhurst with a commanding 41.45 percent or 550,769 votes to Dewhurst’s 28 percent or 376,196. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples won third with 17.75 percent or 235, 981 votes and Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson won fourth with 12.47 percent or 165,787 votes. What was most striking was Patrick, a former sports reporter/sports radio announcer and sports bar owner most known for his political talk radio, challenging constantly his opponents for their having voted for children of illegal immigrants to attend college with tuition at same rates as Texas other state residents and campaigning that his being Christian is his top priority. With Gov. Rick Perry not running for Governor, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for Governor. State Senator Ken Paxton of McKinney north of Dallas now faces State Rep. Dan Branch

BOOK REVIEW

By Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

T

Paxton in the campaign’s last days blasted area broadcast television with ads featuring Texas’ US Senator Ted Cruz saying commanding things about him and him bragging about his having the most conservative endorsements. Branch spent weeks building his name identification with television ads boasting about his work that put a moment of silence back into Texas classrooms. With State Comptroller Susan Combs not running for Comptroller, State Senator Glenn Hegar

from Katy campaigned with his work pushing last year the country’s toughest pro-life laws as among top reasons he should win the job to manage Texas’ tax collections and its fiscal affairs. Hegar won 49.99 percent or 610,512 votes to State Rep. Harvey Hildebrand who won 26.01 votes or 317,731 votes. Former Wharton County GOP Chair Debra Medina, RN won third place at 19.30 percent with 235,713 votes and former State Rep. Raoul Torres, CPA from Corpus Christine won 4.68 percent or 57,255 votes. Hildebrand announced late last week his dropping out and he pledged his support to Hegar now to be the statewide winner. With Staples having run for Lt. Gov., former State Reps. Sid Miller of Stephenville and Tommy Merritt of Longview are now in the run off for Agriculture Commissioner. Miller is most famous for his bringing criminal penalties as a legislator to physicians that do not push their pregnant patients to see sonograms before proceeding with abortion procedures. With Smitherman having run for attorney general former State Rep. Wayne Christian is now in the run off for Rail Road Commissioner in a campaign in which he most talked about his love of guns and praying to God and his opposition to President Obama’s Affordable Healthcare Act.

“Mastering the Art of Quitting”

he project isn’t going very well. It’s going terribly, actually, and you don’t know what to do. You’re this close to success – you can feel it – and you’ve invested way too much time to throw in the towel. And yet, investors have started to squawk and corporate is withdrawing support. You can’t pull the plug - but you can’t not. So what next? Read “Mastering the Art of Quitting” by Peg Streep and Alan Bernstein, LCSW, and you might find out. Throughout your life, you’ve heard that quitters never win. Hang in there, you’ve been told. Don’t give up. Remember The Little Engine That Could. But is this the right way to think? Streep and Bernstein say no. “Quitting,” they say, is “the necessary first step to rebooting and redefining your goals…” The ability to quit is “necessary as a balance” to persistence and optimism. The trick is to know when to utilize either side of the scale – and to understand that quitting doesn’t mean that you’re “a quitter.” Most people, in fact, stick with a dying project a lot longer than they should because of the “myth of persistence,” in which your brain positively responds to a near-win, making you think that you’re close to your goal. “Escalation of commitment” and sunk cost fallacy only exacerbate the unwillingness to end the cycle. Quitting starts with “goal disengagement” on “four levels simultaneously: cognitive, affective, motivational, and behavioral.” In other words, you need to let go of your goals in your mind, with your emotions, and in your intentions and actions.

“Mastering the Art of Quitting” isn’t an easy book to read: it’s heavy with research and steeped in psychology – and in both cases, much of what you’ll find here has already been rehashed (and is easier to understand) in other recent volumes. The difference, I think, is that this book is more for people who are seriously stuck. Authors Peg Streep and Alan Bernstein embrace the kind of introspection that goes deeper than just the door-slamming kind of quit, which the authors admit that they’re not writing about here. No, this is for the kind of quitting that’s long overdue; that isn’t quite understood yet; or that is acknowledged but not yet defined. I think that reading and grasping what’s in this book will demand a fair amount of time, but if you want to leave a situation gracefully and with forethought, it might help you do so. Find “Mastering the Art of Quitting” and you might quit fretting.

hether you are the seasoned politico or a jet setting socialite DC has so much to offer. Great food, entertainment, culture, and off the wall shopping experiences are some of the guilty pleasures one can indulge in whether your trip is for business or pleasure. I had the luxury of enjoying the best of both worlds thanks to Destination DC. They coordinated an intinerary that would satisfy anyone’s diverse food palate, provided exciting tourist selections, and course made sure everything was DC Cool ! The weekend trip began with a non-stop flight on United to the nation’s capital. In about three hours we were whisked to our final destination. Transportation in DC can be interesting whether you endure traffic with your private driver or cab, but I strongly suggest using The Metro which is one of the most efficient and cost effective ways to get around the city.

The Palomar DC Hotel, a Kimpton property was our weekend abode. I guess when your property has the total package there’s no need to brag. This boutique luxury property was chic and trendy at the same time. Nestled amid the vibrancy and bustle of Dupont Circle, surrounded by Embassy Row and an array of fine art galleries, Kimpton’s 335-room Kimpton’s Palomar, Washington D.C. is right at home. When you walk into the Palomar the swagger is undeniable from the perfectly positioned transparent fireplace, beautiful and attentive staff, and striking artistic accents throughout the hotel. When I walked into my room, I was invited to a bottle of wine, fresh fruit, and cheese. The tranquil energy of the room was a great vibe where I relished in the Frette linens, tranquilizing pillows, and Aveda bath products that made my heart flutter. Other amenities one can indulge in the Wine Down Happy Hour, the state of the art fitness center, and spa treatment accommodations sent directly to your room.

Tourism Big B Bus Tour The Big Bus tour of Washington DC is a sightseeing destination on an open-top double-decker bus. You can choose, either an entertaining commentary provided by an experienced guide or a recorded commentary available in several languages. What I especially enjoyed on the tour was you could hop on or off at any time to enjoy the sites or take a quick stroll.

Newsuem Find out for yourself why everyone is calling the Newseum the best experience Washington, D.C. has to offer. Each of the seven levels in this magnificent building is packed with interactive exhibits that explore how news affects our shared experience of historic moments. Whether you have just a few hours or want to spend all day, you’ll find something for everyone in the family in the Newseum’s 15 theaters and 15 galleries. National Portrait Gallery The National Portrait Gallery is an historic art museum located at 8th and F Streets NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Founded in 1962 and opened to the public in 1968, it is part of the Smithsonian Institution. Its collections focus on Adjustable images of famous Americans.

Bridging The Gap: Diego Luna On The Legacy of César Chavez

e should be thankful for Diego Luna.

tons of film. [I] saw many documentaries and footage to see their basic needs.. Second, working very closely with the union today and with someone who runs the UFW (United Farm Workers) today, Arturo Rodriguez. And the third was to go out to the fields and experience it for myself. We traveled through many communities around Delano. That’s basically where our story happens. The experience, the actual day of a farm worker, we had to see. We had to see it from every perspective basically to understand it and to be able to tell the story.

It’s a weighted statement but it’s true. The director of the biopic about American born Latino hero César Chavez deserves recognition beyond belief. Chavez, co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association and leader of the 1960’s grape boycott is an American hero, regardless of race thanks to his tireless efforts of not only giving hope to many suffering the unfair conditions and low wages of migrant farm work, but raising the awareness of being positive change for Latinos everywhere. And Luna became the man to bring his tri- HSM: Dolores Huerta played a major role in asumphant life story to life. Part of the entertainment business from an early age, Luna has been cast in roles involving theatre, television, and movies. His big breakthrough occurred when he was cast in the critically acclaimed coming of age film, Y Tu Mamá También {And Your Mother Too]. Now, in what may be his most important role to date, he’s sharing the story of César Chavez, is inspiring many and awakening a movement of Latino leaders to do more for their people and most importantly for the legacy of Chavez himself. The film and life of Chavez escorted me back to my own personal journey, the daughter of a migrant farm worker. Until now, I had never Diego Luna on the set of Cesar Chavez taken the time to ask about my mom and her family’s life on the farms. It only took the first couple of minutes of me telling the film for her to confirm what I had seen. She, overcome with a flood of emotions returning, faintly responded back to me and as I sat down with Luna following the film, he expressed those sentiments too.

sisting Chavez with his plight. Many have said that Huerta deserves a film of her own. Is this a project you’re willing to take on? DL: I don’t know if [anytime] soon but if no one comes and does it then we might be doing it. She deserves a film and she deserves to be celebrated today. She keeps working hard and she keeps showing us that change is in our hands. She doesn’t stop. We have to be more than a film. HSM: What advice do you have for filmmakers that may be or are thinking about making a film about other historic American-born Latinos? DL: The first thing I would say is make sure you fill those theatres on March 28th because that will be sending the right message to those choosing what films get to be made today. If we send a message that there is an audience for these types of films, they’ll be doing more and will be joining and probably my next film won’t take me four years to put it together. If people don’t go to the cinemas, we cannot complain there’s no films about us because we would be part of the machine that does not pay attention.

Houston Style Magazine: Mr. Luna, thank you for this film. It is such a gift. First off, what type of research went into factually portraying the farm workers in the film? Were there personal one-onone interviews? Diego Luna: Well, there were three steps. The first step was to go through all the material of the time. The movement happened not too long ago so there’s Michael Pena as Cesar Chavez

COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

T

his morning I woke up -- not with Georgia -but with Selma on my mind. Selma bears witness to the bloody and murderous struggle to end discrimination in voting on the basis of race. The demonstrations there led directly to President Lyndon Baines Johnson signing the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The 1965 Voting Rights Act was historic, designed to redress the unique history of discrimination against African Americans. But it was limited. It did not give each and every American citizen the explicit, constitutionally guaranteed federal right to vote. The 1965 Voting Rights Act has been effective and efficient. Sections 4 and 5 were its heart and soul because they provided for a prior review that prevented racial discrimination in voting. In the recent Shelby decision, a conservative majority of the Supreme Court cut the heart (Section 4) out of the law and left its soul (Section 5) as exposed as a cadaver on a funeral director’s table. Shelby said you can keep the car but you can’t have the keys. The car looks great, but it’s not going anywhere. Now we must all join together in an effort to fix the damage done by Shelby, and revive the heart of the Voting Rights Act. But we should also take a step back and see what we’re really facing. A text out of context is a pretext. What’s the context of America’s voting rights? The context is that we have a “states’ rights” voting system -- 50 states (plus DC), 3,143 counties, 13,000 election jurisdictions that administer 186,000 precincts, all in “separate and unequal” local voting jurisdictions. But if the legal principle of “separate and unequal” was unacceptable for education in 1954, it’s also unacceptable for voting in 2014, since voting is the foundation of our democracy.

Selma On My Mind: Guaranteeing the Right to Vote Most Americans assume that they have a “right” to vote -- and they’re partially correct. Except for ex-felon laws in certain states, most Americans do have a state right to vote, but they don’t have a citizenship right to vote. In Alabama, they have an Alabama right to vote, but not an American right to vote. It’s because of this “states’ rights” voting system that, since 2010, 34 states have been able to pass new voting laws that are mostly designed to suppress or make it more difficult for certain Americans to vote -specifically minorities, young people, workers, poor people and the disabled. The intent of these mostly efforts driven by Republican Governors and Republican-controlled legislatures is to disenfranchise Democrats (big “D”), but the effect undermines all democrats (small “d”) and our democracy. Congressional efforts to “fix” the damage done by Shelby to the Voting Rights Act are essential. But the remedy will inevitably will leave the Voting Rights Act in a weaker state than it was before Shelby. We should not have to protect the “right to vote” piecemeal - state-by-state, county-by-county, voting district-by-voting district, year-after-year. So I argue that even as we mobilize to end the damage done to the Voting Rights Act, we should be fighting for a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to vote to all. Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution is there an explicit guarantee of the right to vote. Prior to becoming President of the United States, Barack Obama, as a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago, began each of his constitutional law classes stunning his students with the surprising fact that a “citizenship or individual right to vote” is not in the Constitution.

Reps. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., and Keith Ellison, D-Minn., have introduced in Congress a constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right to vote. Its language is sensible plain and clear: SECTION 1: Every citizen of the United States, who is of legal voting age, shall have the fundamental right to vote in any public election held in the jurisdiction in which the citizen resides. SECTION 2: Congress shall have the power to enforce and implement this article by appropriate legislation. Passing a constitutional Amendment isn’t easy. It must be supported for ratification by 2/3 of the members of both the House and the Senate, and then ratified by 3/4 of the state legislatures. No amendment can pass without a broad consensus. But guaranteeing the right to vote isn’t partisan or ideological or a special interest agenda. It is fundamental to all Americans. It is the foundation of our democracy. And it is long past due. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush. org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment does guarantee the individual right to a gun. So we have the bizarre situation that in one of the world’s leading democracies, citizens have a guaranteed right to a gun, but not the right to vote.

GM Ignition Switch Issue Surfaced in 2001 By Gregory Wallace CNN/Stylemagazine.com General Motors knew of an issue with its ignition switch several years before it has previously acknowledged. The company said in a federal filing Wednesday that it discovered an issue with the Saturn Ion ignition switch in 2001 during pre-production development. General Motors has previously said it first learned of ignition switch issues in 2004. The document said a 2001 internal GM report noted “an ignition switch design change had solved the problem.” It General Motors wasn’t clear from the document if the issue discovered in 2001 was related to the issue that led to the recently announced recall of 1.4 million cars in North America. The issue cited in the recall has been linked to 13 deaths. But it said a 2001 internal report noted “an ignition switch design change had solved the problem.” GM said late Wednesday it has been conducting “a more in-depth analysis of the information related to the vehicles” it recalled.
