COMMENTARY We Must Continually Fight to Carry On King’s Work
T
By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
he 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination comes amid a fierce struggle for the soul of America. We will celebrate the progress that has been made since Dr. King was taken from us in 1968, and decry the agenda that is still unfinished. But we cannot ignore the systematic effort - from the highest offices of government - to roll back his legacy, to make America more separate and unequal, to reverse the progress of the last years. From the White House and across the great cabinets of the federal government, civil rights are being systematically undermined. President Trump has set the tone personally, slandering immigrants and seeking to ban Muslims, while noting there were “very fine people” among the neo-Nazi marchers in Charlottesville. He pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, allowing him to avoid accountability for racially profiling Latinos. He terminated the Obama program that protected the DACA children, and sabotaged every bipartisan effort to protect these children who know no other country than the U.S. He called for NFL players protesting against discrimination to be fired, while slurring “s--hole countries” in Africa.
In different departments, his appointees have moved relentlessly to roll back enforcement of civil rights, with Attorney General Jeff Sessions leading the way. DOJ lawyers reversed their position on voting rights cases, like that in Texas, essentially opening the door for voter suppression.
fair housing laws, at the very moment the department must disburse billions in disaster recovery Community Block Grants that could help reverse past wrongs. Carson even pushed to strike the words “inclusive” and “free from discrimination” from HUD’s mission statement.
Sessions forced a review of Obama-era consent decrees with police departments, even as Trump praised brutal police tactics. He drastically limited the use of court enforced consent decrees themselves, eviscerating the primary instrument of civil rights enforcement.
Abroad, Trump has expanded the endless wars without victory that King warned against. He has slashed taxes on the wealthy and corporations while targeting basic programs for the vulnerable - from food stamps to Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid - for deep cuts. He sought to repeal Obamacare, which would have deprived millions of health care.
Sessions has also declared that civil rights laws protecting against workplace discrimination do not apply to transgender workers. His labor secretary disbanded a 40-yearold division enforcing laws against discrimination in the workplace. His education secretary, billionaire Betsy DeVos, disemboweled the department’s office of civil rights and pushed to move public funds to support voucher programs, while calling for deep cuts in the staff and budget of the education department. His secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson, has gutted enforcement of civil rights and
This is a direct and sustained assault on Dr. King’s legacy.Dr. King fought for integration against discrimination. He marched for equal opportunity against entrenched inequality. He championed non-violence against violence. He campaigned for voting rights, knowing that democracy offered the best chance for change. He called for an end to the war in Vietnam, realizing that the bombs being dropped on Vietnam were landing in the poor neighborhoods of our cities. At the
end of his life, he was organizing a broad coalition of poor people, across lines of race, religion and region, to march on Washington to demand basic economic rights. No representative of the administration will appear in Memphis as we mark the anniversary of his assassination. More reason that a new generation must take up the mission of his life. He taught us that “change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” He knew that the progress that the Civil Rights Movement was making would generate a fierce reaction. He called on us to “rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter, but beautiful struggle for a new world.” We have work to do. You can write to the Rev. POLITICAL
Trump’s Ignorance About Immigration Is Stunning
n religious holidays like Christmas, Passover and Easter, most Presidents honor the occasion by sending a message of goodwill towards all Americans and then taking a break from politics. Not our President. Just hours after tweeting “Happy Easter!” to his 49 million Twitter followers, Donald Trump began venting about illegal immigration.
call, he was the one who ended DACA, the program that allowed roughly 800,000 young people brought here illegally as children, known as the Dreamers, to live and work openly.
O
“Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release,” he tweeted. “Getting more dangerous. “Caravans” coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!” So much for the spirit of Holy Week. With his tweets, the President has displayed his ignorance of immigration laws, including those governing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. His social media outburst was as at best uninformed, and at worst blatantly misleading. In short, it was unpresidential. For starters, it makes absolutely no logical sense that the President would make a big deal of announcing “NO MORE DACA DEAL”-- in all caps, as though he were taking some bold new stance. Let’s re-

By Raul A. Reyes, CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire
The President unilaterally began the unwinding of this program in September, with no plan to replace it, and since then has rejected several bipartisan proposals that would have provided a legislative fix for the plight of the Dreamers. It is nonsensical for Trump to be vowing that there will be “no more deal” when there is not now and never has been any realistic chance of a DACA deal. Referring to what he regards as unchecked illegal entries at our southern border, the President tweeted, “These big flows of people are all trying to take advantage of DACA. They want in on the act!”
Donald Trump border; by April 2018 this number had dropped to about 15,700. In fact the drop in illegal entries under the Trump administration is something Trump himself has bragged about.
But his anger about illegal border crossings seems motivated by something other than...reality. In 2017, arrests at the southern border hit a46-year low, the lowest number since 1971, according to the Department of Homeland Security. In January 2017, for example, Customs and Border Protection agents apprehended about 42,400 people at the US/Mexico
What is particularly startling about Trump’s comments this weekend is that he suggests that people are coming to the US without authorization to take advantage of the DACA program. But, thanks to Trump, DACA officially ended on March 5. Even if it were still in place, to be eligible for DACA, applicants must have lived in the US since 2007, have arrived before age 16,

and been younger than 31 in June 2012. New arrivals are not eligible for DACA -- so to suggest that people are coming here to obtain the program’s protections is simply wrong. The DACA program currently exists, covering those already in the program, only because its termination was temporarily blocked by federal judges in California and New York. housands of worshipers at a Methodist megachurch in Houston didn’t expect to hear from their pastor’s lawyer on Easter morning. The special guest dropped in to speak days after Kirbyjon Caldwell—a prominent Texas pastor and former spiritual adviser to presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama—was charged with more than a dozen crimes in an alleged fraud scheme. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) alleges that Caldwell and his financial planner misled investors out of $3.5 million through the sale of shady Chinese bonds. Caldwell maintains his innocence and plans to fight the charges.

They were calling for “no more bloodshed.” Others handed out flyers for a town hall to discuss potential policy changes with local politicians and officials stemming from the latest officer-involved shooting of an unarmed black man. U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and state Rep. Jarvis Johnson, both Democrats from Houston, joined Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez and representatives from the county’s district attorney’s office and the Houston Police Department at a community meeting.

ouston’s Unity National Bank is opening their first branch in Atlanta and the expansion was made possible in part by black economic activism, according to the Houston Chronicle. Black owned banks were hit hard during the recession, and many had to close. Unity National Bank was able to survive in part because Houston’s housing market didn’t see the sorts of activity the market in other cities saw. Because of its luck, Unity is now the only black-owned bank in Houston, Texas. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, it was the top performing black-owned bank between 2015-2017.
Hispanic Superintendents in Texas Lags Student Population [Houston Public Media]
H
ispanic superintendents are underrepresented in Texas public schools, despite Hispanic students representing the majority of students in the state. More than 52 percent of Texas students are Hispanic, compared with about 25 percent nationally. The Houston Chronicle reports that Martha Salazar-Zamora is the sole Hispanic superintendent among 55 school district leaders in the Greater Houston area, where 51 percent of students are Hispanic. An analysis shows Greater Houston lags far behind other Texas metropolitan areas when it comes to hiring Latino leaders.

innie Madikizela-Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid campaigner and former wife of the late President Nelson Mandela, has died at age 81. The family said in a statement that she passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. “Mrs. Madikizela-Mandela was one of the greatest icons of the struggle against apartheid,” the statement said. “She fought valiantly against the apartheid state and sacrificed her life for the freedom of the country.” Her death came as a shock. “None of us had predicted this,” a family spokesman told CNN. Madikizela-Mandela was known as the “Mother of the Nation” because of her struggle against white-minority rule in South Africa. She was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years, including the 27 years he was imprisoned on an island near Cape Town. “She kept the memory of her imprisoned husband Nelson Mandela alive during his years on Robben Island and helped give the struggle for justice in South Africa one of its most recognizable faces,” the statement said. The couple were divorced
in 1996, two years after Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black President. They had two daughters together. Nelson Mandela died in 2013. A longtime stalwart of the ruling African National Congress, or ANC, political party, Madikizela-Mandela was a member of South Africa’s parliament at the time of her death. One of the last official visits she received was from current South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who went with her to Soweto township last month to encourage people to register to vote in next year’s presidential election. On Monday, Ramaphosa praised Madikizela-Mandela as “an advocate for the Winnie Mandela dispossessed and the marginalized” and an “official national” funeral will be April “a voice for the voiceless.”“Even at the 14, Ramaphosa said. darkest moments of our struggle for liberation, Mam’ Winnie was an abiding sym- A Link to the Outside World Born in 1936 in what is now known bol of the desire of our people to be free,” as the Eastern Cape province, Nomzamo Ramaphosa said in a statement. It’s been 50 years since King’s slaying, but this marks the first time the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Ambassador Andrew Young have been back to the motel together. The sole surviving members of King’s entourage that day, Jackson and Young have met CNN here to discuss their friend and teacher’s legacy, which they, in their own distinct ways, have carried on. They’re not alone. Through King’s teachings on nonviolent resistance, “he belongs to everybody,” Jackson says.On that day back in 1968, hope seemed lost. But King’s spirit has endured for half a century, manifesting itself in all manner of peaceful protest, most recently in the March For Our Lives demonstrations, which Young calls “Martin Luther King on steroids.”

In the moments before the shot, King and his cohorts were goofing off and sassing each other. Catfish and chicken wings had been ordered to Room 201 downstairs, where King’s brother, A.D., was staying. Jackson and Young were both downstairs. King was fussing at Young, asking why he hadn’t called from court with updates. “Come on, I was on the witness stand trying to keep your ass out of jail,” Young replied, “and he said, ‘Oh, you’re smart, huh?’ and he picked up the pillow.” “It was five minutes before he came up here,” Site of MLK Assasination Young recounts from outside Room 306, the last place King lay his head. “He was about being punctual. “I was down there acting the most silly and crazy I have ever shadowboxing with James Orange in the parking lot, and I was talking to him, tellseen him. ing him he needed a coat,” Young recalls. FDA Warns Pregnant Women, Especially Hispanics, About Listeria-prone Foods [FoodSafetyNews.com]
T
he deaths of at least 78 newborns in the ongoing South African listeriosis outbreak has created one of those “teaching moments” about how especially dangerous the pathogen is to pregnant women. And the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is using the opportunity to warn Hispanic women that they need to pay special attention, not because they are any different than any other pregnant women, but because of some traditional ethnic foods they might eat. As the largest listeriosis outbreak plays out, part of the anger South Africans have experienced focused on the fact that 78 of the first 180 deaths were of infants. Pregnant women and their unborn and newborn children are among the highest risk groups for listeriosis, which is a foodborne disease. FDA says Listeria can affect all races and ethnic groups, but pregnant women are about 10 times more likely than other people to contract listeriosis.

ENTERTAINMENT Vivica A. Fox is Hotter Than Ever, and Disarmingly Real By Allison Kugel
K
ind, conscientious, courageous and refreshingly candid, Ms. Vivica A. Fox has proven that as Hollywood careers go, second acts are often the sweetest. The multi-hyphenate actress-directorbeauty entrepreneur-author is embracing life and not looking back, except to pull from her well of wisdom for her new memoir, Every Day I’m Hustling. And if you know Vivica like I got to know her during our conversation, you’d think the book’s title quite fitting. She enjoys hard work and has no plans to slow down. Born Vivica Anjanetta Fox on the outskirts of Indianapolis, she went by Angie Fox, one of four siblings being raised by divorced mother who worked overtime to provide for her children. Her childhood home was hectic but loving and provided fertile ground for Vivica to aspire for things grander than her midwestern upbringing. After high school, she made her way to Southern California to attend college, all the while seeking out opportunities in Los Angeles to model and act wherever she could. It was in LA that Angie became Viv-
ica A. Fox. She worked her way through the ranks on sitcoms and daytime soaps, and in 1996 got her breakthrough role opposite Will Smith in the classic blockbuster, Independence Day. Next came a string of fan favorites including Set It Off, Soul Food, Two Can Play That Game, Kill Bill Volume I and II, and a string of subsequent roles in film and television, including Larry David’s sharp-witted houseguest, Loretta Black, on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Skye in the campy Sharknado franchise. Her eclectic career has kept her on the move for nearly three decades.
Indianapolis?
In 2016, Vivica joined the cast of the smash hit television series, Empire, playing conservative suburbanite Candace, Cookie Lyon’s (Taraji P. Henson) older sister and character foil.

During our interview we covered everything from movie stardom and maternal instincts to social media drama, setting boundaries and finding love. Allison Kugel: When are you Angie and when are you Vivica? When do you take off the Vivica and become Angie from
Vivica A. Fox: Well first off, that’s Angie Fox from 38th and Emerson in Indianapolis (laughs)! I’m Vivica Fox when I hit that red carpet and I’m ready to slay the game. That’s what I do. But I love that I have in my life, and in my journey, learned when to be Angie Fox. And that’s mainly when I’m with my family, time off, hanging out with my godchildren, having my Me Time and learning to take Me Time. That’s when I’m no makeup, baseball cap, chilling and blending in.
Vivica A. Fox: Oh my gosh! To be honest with you, the older I’ve gotten, the more I prefer it. I work so much; I’ve been so blessed and so busy lately that I enjoy when I can have that Me Time. In fact, today I don’t have to be on. That’s what I really love about being with my godchildren. When they see me, I’m just G.G. or G-ma. G.G. stands for Gorgeous Godmother. G-ma, I don’t know where they got that one from, but I have five godchildren. Two
of them call me G-ma and the other ones call me G.G. They like hanging with me. Not the drama or the glamour, they just want me. Vivica’s memoir, “Every Day I’m Hustling,” is available everywhere books are sold April 3rd and available for pre-order on Amazon.

FEATURE HBRW: Serving Up Tips to Take Control of Your Money in 2018 Black Businesses asBythe Main Dish Family Features
C
ounting calories isn’t the only way you can resolve to bring about positive change in your life. If you’re like many Americans, it may be a good time to start counting your way toward better financial health. The past year brought financial setbacks to nearly two-thirds of United States households, according to a survey by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE).
percent). “We continue to see a lot of anxiety about money,” said Ted Beck, president and CEO of NEFE. “Three-quarters of Americans said something causes them financial stress, and it’s most often not saving enough and debt that are to blame.” Reduce money stress and take control of your finances with these tips for financial success from the experts at NEFE:
In fact, more than a quarter of U.S. adults say the current quality of their financial lives are worse than they hoped. Topping the list of setbacks in 2017 were transportation issues (23 percent), housing repairs or maintenance (20 percent), and the inability to keep up with debt and falling behind on bill payments (16 percent).
1. Get debt under control. Take a hard look at what you owe. If there’s a clear warning sign of too much debt, take action. Set a goal to reduce your debt load next year by 5-10 percent. That might mean reducing impulse shopping. When you face temptation, delay the purchase and give yourself time to consider whether it’s a wise move that fits within your budget.
In an effort to reverse that trend, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults will make new financial goals for 2018, according to the survey. Among those that plan to step up their financial game, top goals include setting and following a budget (40 percent), making a plan to get out of debt (39 percent), establishing savings (32 percent) and boosting retirement savings (31
2. Save now and do so often. Preparing for unexpected events like medical emergencies can help reduce the financial impact of a life-changing event. Emergency savings can offset unexpected costs and help you get back on solid footing. A good rule of thumb is to have 6-9 months of income set aside. If that feels out of reach, start with a smaller goal, even as little as
$500. When it comes to saving, it’s also a smart idea to think long term. Review your long-term savings and ensure they are on target for your retirement plans.

anaging your money can seem like a daunting task when trying to weigh out what must get paid versus buying things that you just want. The later is the troublemaker. All those incidental expenses for desires that you think you can’t live without add up and if you don’t watch out those incidentals will have you in the poor house. Not a good look my friend. I want to live in the black and not the red. The best way to do that moving forward is to adopt some new financial habits. Priority number one in this process is creating and managing a budget.
Developing a Budget
Don’t make that face. One can budget, save money, and still indulge in some unnecessary spending. But like with most things, you have to put some parameters around it and be discipline to follow the plan. Wells Fargo offers some great tips to make budgeting a snap in five easy steps.
spending machine? You might get a real awakening of how you waste money once it is all in black and white and in your face. There are number of ways to track your spending from the latest apps to the old fashion pen and paper. Step 3 – Analyze your research. When your month of tracking is over make two columns – one that lists all sources of income and the second one that lists all your expenses. Add everything up to get the sum totals for each column. Subtract your total expenses from your total income. If your expenses are less than your income, congratulations you are on the right track. If your expenses are more than your income, then you have some work to do. Look at your expenses and ask yourself, “What can I do without?” and “What’s really important?” and make necessary adjustments with your spending.
Step 1 – Get organize. Gather all your financial paperwork, i.e. your paystubs, your household bills, and anything you pay on a monthly basis. Make two piles – one for the money coming in and the other for the money that is going out.
Step 4 – Time to react. Now that your expenses are in plain sight, assign each one a category and seta budget for each, making adjustments if needed. This is also where you workout your saving plans. See which expenses you can cut back on and set that money aside to put in a saving account.
Step 2 – Start tracking your expenses. Financial advisors suggest tracking your expenses for a month to get to know your spending habits. And it is key to write down every single thing. Are you fugal or
Step 5 – Review your plan. Plan at the end of every month to review your budget to make sure that you are being discipline about your spending. If you are not, you make need to seek the help of financial professional.

nvesting early on is a forward-thinking way to potentially grow your money and meet your financial goals. Consider these three ways your money can work for you:
1. Keeping ahead of inflation
A key reason to invest is to try and keep your nest egg growth faster than rising inflation rates. Based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), inflation rates reflect the rising costs of basic needs, such as food and clothing. Consider this: $20 in 1980 had the same buying power as $58.50 in 2016.1 If you invest, you have the potential to grow your savings at a similar or higher rate – making it easier for you to afford your expenses when you retire.
2. Compounding growth
When you select an investment with compounding interest, your earnings take on a cumulative effect. With compound interest, the interest accrues on both the principal and the previously accumulated interest – as opposed to simple interest, where only the principal earns interest. To

Reduce Your Debt
Following the above tips will put you on path to reduce your debt. Wells Fargo offers three tips for lower debt – 1) organize your debt, 2) prioritize your payments, and 3) consolidate your debt. Organize your debt - Not all types of debt affect your finances equally. To figure out what’s making the biggest impact on your budget, collect recent statements from all of your creditors. Write down the creditor, amount owed, monthly payment, and interest rate on your accounts. Knowing which debts have the highest minimum monthly payments and interest rates will help you determine which debt is costing you the most.
Prioritize your payments - One strategy that will help you reduce your debt the fastest is to pay the minimum on all of your debts each month – except for the one with the highest rate. On that debt, pay as much as you can afford. This will save you money on interest payments and help you reduce that debt faster. Consolidate your debt - If you’re dealing with multiple debts, you may want to consider debt consolidation, or combining all of your debts into a single loan. This allows you to pay off your debt with one monthly payment, which is often much lower than all of your previous monthly payments combined.
Why Consider Investing? Learn how investing can make your money work for you. By Wells Fargo learn how to calculate compound interest, imagine you’ve invested $1,000 for a year at a five percent rate. You would make $50 in that first year. But in the second year, you’d multiply $1,050 by 1.05 to get the new total, $1,102.50. With compounding interest, each year more interest accrues than in the previous year. The longer it stays invested, the more its value has the potential to grow.
3. Matching Contributions
A matching contribution is a type of contribution an employer chooses to make to his or her employee’s employer sponsored retirement plan.2 Nationwide American employees are passing up an estimated $24 billion annually in employer matching contributions by not saving enough to receive their full employer 401(k) match.3 Getting started with investing is easy. If you learn about the basic types of investments and find the right advisor, you can begin making more informed financial choices for the future.

etirement may seem a long way off and far removed from your day-today concerns. And yet, this is actually the best time to start planning and saving — that is, when you still have time to accumulate the money you’ll need. Here are some common mistakes that throw people off course in their retirement planning. Knowing these pitfalls should help you steer clear and save more. Mistake #1: Failing to take full advantage of retirement saving plans If your company’s 401(k) plan offers a company match (meaning that your employer pledges to match your contribution up to a certain percent of your salary), you have an extra incentive. If you neglect to invest enough to receive the full company match, you’re leaving money on the table. If you get a raise, consider increasing your 401(k) contribution. Mistake #2: Getting out of the market after a downturn When the market takes a big hit, you may be tempted to pull out all the stocks in your retirement portfolio. If you do, you’ll miss the gains if the market turns around. You want to keep a good mix of asset classes in your portfolio: stocks, bonds, and cash. And once a year, you should rebalance to keep your asset allocation on track. Mistake #3: Buying too much of your

company’s stock If your own company’s stock shares are an investment choice in your 401(k), you may want to consider keeping your allocation to no more than 10 percent. You’re not being disloyal; even the mightiest of companies — think Enron and WorldCom — can falter. With your salary already tied to your company’s fortunes, you don’t want a sizable part of your retirement savings to be similarly dependent. Mistake #4: Borrowing from your 401(k) Many 401(k)s allow you to borrow from your account. Unless you need the money for an emergency, try not to. Borrowing can be an expensive choice, in two ways: ▪ Smaller retirement savings: When you take out a loan you are losing the benefits of investment growth and that could leave you with a smaller retirement savings. How much smaller? This depends on a number of factors, including the size of the loan, the repayment period, whether you continue contributions during this period, the earnings on your account, and the loan interest rate. Also, if you stop contributing while you are paying back your loan, you won’t receive any employer matching contributions. ▪ Repayment requirements: If you lose your job or take another one, you’ll have to repay the money quickly, usually within 30 to 60 days. If you can’t, the IRS con-
siders the money you’ve taken out to be a withdrawal, which means you’ll have to pay taxes — and if you’re under age 59½, you may owe a penalty as well. Mistake #5: Underestimating the cost and length of retirement Some crucial factors to take into account: ▪ Longevity: If you retire around age 65, you could spend a quarter century or more in retirement. Many advisors now urge clients to save enough to last 25 to 30 years. ▪ Inflation and taxes: Even with relatively
mild inflation over the past 25 years, the cost of living has more than doubled. Also consider what taxes you’ll be paying on the money you withdraw from your retirement account. ▪ Health care: Even with Medicare, you could have expenses for supplemental insurance, some prescription drugs, and nursing home care. ▪ Lifestyle sticker shock: People in retirement generally need at least 80 percent of their pre-retirement income.

ENTERTAINMENT Miguel, SiR Bring the Heat to Warehouse Live By Brandon Caldwell, Feature Writer
M
iguel, at his core, is a rock star wrapped in an R&B singer’s silhouette. When he’s on stage, as he was Tuesday night at Warehouse Live, all eyes were on him. There were strategic lighting placements and rigs to give off more of a show, but the “Adorn” singer couldn’t help himself. There were wardrobe changes; he slid out of his leather jacket to sport different fashionable T-shirts and ultimately serenaded a sold-out crowd with a steady diet of sexually charged bedroom bangers and funk-R&B songs. War & Leisure, Miguel’s latest album is an album that is slightly political but brings the specter of union together. He still has to make sexy songs of course, but in spaces on Tuesday night, he made those watching him think. He wants to be outside of the box on stage. Moving beyond the typical “live your dreams” platitudes and words of affirmation most singers and artists tell their audiences, Miguel opted for something different. He wants you to zero in on your worldview and how you can make it better. How self-curation yields the most substantial impact on what happens to us in the long run. As “Sky Walker,” his current big single blared,
a thought ran through the audience. He has confidently stated that this would probably be the last time he played in a venue like Warehouse Live, possibly opting for say Toyota Center or even Revention Music Center down the line. It fell right along with his words earlier in the night, ones about control. And even consent, which is probably a first at an R&B show. “Fellas... If she didn’t give you permission tonight or any night, keep your hands to yourself!” he exclaimed before “Come Through And Chill.” Overall the night proved to be a success for everyone on the bill, including Inglewood, California singer SiR. The Top Dawg Entertainment singer, who will sadly be absent from TDE’s upcoming The Championship tour made sure that he turned everything out during his brief yet excellent set. Many wanted to hear more from the young singer as “Oh Nah Nah” from his Her Pt II EP was a ready-made crowd favorite. As the night winded down and the skies opened up with rain, fans rushed underneath the different spaces outside the venue to find cover. Maybe they even found a little love in the process.

Chevrolet Tahoe: A Large SUV with a Larger Price Tag That’s Worth It By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Premier RST ater, along with fire, air, and earth, is one of the basic elements needed to sustain life. It is because of this significance to the human body and the connection between nature that the Native American culture holds water in such high regard. Water is sacred. Multiple meanings like life and death and good and bad health are associated with water depending on its depiction and clarity. One of the clearest and largest bodies of water straddling the California and Nevada line is Lake Tahoe. It is the largest alpine lake in North America, second deepest in the U.S., and is the sixth largest. Everything about Lake Tahoe is big. Its sheer size and majestic nature was inspiration enough for General Motors to name their full-size SUV Tahoe. And for one week I got the chance to test out the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD Premier.
W
The Chevrolet Tahoe is America’s best-selling large SUV as well as the most dependable. After my review, I totally understand why. From its spacious cabin to its efficient fuel economy, the Chevrolet Tahoe gives buyers more of what they need and want for the large SUV market. One major need for drivers in the full-size SUV market is space. One can’t get much bigger than the Chevrolet Tahoe, after all, what other vehicle do you know that has room for seven full-size adults. And might I add

seven seats that are comfortable for those full-size adults. Although one might want to reserve the third row of seats for shorter vs. taller riders as it has a smaller leg space area versus the second row. Of course, having this much room for passengers means less space for things like luggage for long trips or other cargo. So if one happens to travel with fewer people the third row is a 60/40 split configuration and has power fold flat seat for added cargo space.
Chevrolet Tahoe, GM decided to add a new engine option that is only available on the Premier trim level. The upgraded 6.2-liter V8 engine paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission is part of the RST performance package. Obtaining this engine will increase the horsepower to 420 to generate 460 lb. ft. of torque. The engine is pumped up so that means something has to give. That something is a less than efficient fuel economy. At the beginning of this article, I said the Tahoe had efficient fuel economy but I was speaking for base models with the 5.3-liter V6 engine that produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb. ft. of torque. EPA estimates are lowered to 14-mpg city and 22 mpg highway with the more powerful engine. Another whammy is the one to the wallet when filling this puppy up. No regular gas for this big boy. A premier vehicle needs premium gas for the 26-gallon capacity fuel tank.
The driver and front passenger have both heated and ventilated seats, which is so needed in Houston’s multi-season weather. Heat can also be felt for second row passengers as well as on the steering wheel and side mirrors. Controls are nicely laid out and easy to use. Customers can use the tip of their finger to control the 8-inch touchscreen with navigation. Inside the cabin, riders can be spoiled by the 10-speaker Bose audio system, Bluetooth technology, and for a little more green optional features A big concern when driving large SUV like a Blu-ray DVD entertainment system is handling and steering. This problem is with wireless charging can be added. addressed with the addition of the Magnetic Lucky for me, I had the wireless phone Ride Control. It is like the crazier the road charger added on my test vehicle. This is is with twists and turns, the better it kicks something that I think needs to be standard in gear to handle it. Some don’t like it but I on all vehicles moving forward. It really cuts love the low key rev of the engine from the down on the clutter of cords and chargers exhaust when the vehicle starts up. It is like needed to power phones. With the 2018 it is giving other vehicles a warning to get

their game up because the Tahoe is coming. Let me make a note on the towing capacity of the Chevrolet Tahoe. It is up to 8,600 pounds. That’s a lot of hauling. So basically the Tahoe is like bring it, I got it, let’s go. Chunked full of safety features, my test vehicle was equipped with forward collision alert, lane keep assist with departure warning, lane change alert with side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, rear vision camera, and low speed forward auto braking. All of these are so needed, especially with a large SUV where people and items can be hidden out of the sight of the driver. From this review, it is easy to tell that the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD Premier has a lot to offer consumers. I encourage all to explore it further at a local dealer or through Chevrolet.com as I only touched on some of the highlights of this vehicle. Having all that the Chevrolet Tahoe does also means having a price tag that is reflective of such a vehicle as this. Sticker price for the base model starts at $65,130. Add on the RST package, sunroof, front brake kit, larger touchscreen, and all weather floor liner and the price jumps to $78,155. So one has to dig deep to take it home!

EAT WITH STYLE Help Fight Inflammation with Food By Family Features
O
n top of being tasty, certain foods contain specific nutrients and natural compounds that may help fight inflammation, a condition linked to arthritis and gout. With that in mind, try heading to the fridge or pantry the next time you feel joint pain, swelling or stiff knees. Colorful fruits and vegetables, including ruby red tart cherries and dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, are among the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods, along with oily fish (salmon, sardines and scallops), nuts, seeds and whole grains. Ingredients such as ginger, turmeric and olive oil may also help combat inflammation. For an inflammation-fighting boost, Montmorency tart cherries contain the “highest anti-inflammatory content of any food,” according to research conducted at Oregon Health & Science University. Results show that cherry intake can help reduce blood levels of gout-causing uric acid and reduce the painful symptoms of osteoarthritis. Research also shows that Montmorency tart cherry juice can reduce post-exercise inflammation and muscle pain. “For decades, people with arthritis and gout have consumed tart cherry juice for pain

relief. Now there’s scientific evidence to back up this popular folklore remedy,” said registered dietitian Michelle Babb, author of “Anti-Inflammatory Eating Made Easy.” “Since Montmorency tart cherries are one of the richest sources of anthocyanins, a potent type of flavonoid, they can offer a natural way to help ease the pain related to arthritis and gout.” To help fight inflammation with food, try this recipe for Bay Scallop, Baby Kale and Corn Salad with Tart Cherry Granola, which is packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients. Astros Continue Their Winning Ways On Ring Ceremony Night
I
n 1993, a movie came out about a weatherman who was sent to cover an annual Groundhog Day ceremony. A crowd gathers and waits for the groundhog to come out and predict the weather for the next six weeks. In the movie, the weatherman keeps reliving the same day over and over again. That’s what I feel like when I am watching the Houston Astros. They just keep winning and winning. The 2017 World Champions started off the season where they finished it on last year, in first place. Already out to a 5-1 record, which is tied for the second-best record in Major League Baseball, the Astros show no sign of slowing down. Houston is currently on a 4-game winning streak. The usual suspects, 2017 American League MVP Jose Altuve, 2017 World Series MVP George Springer, and 2017 AllStar Carlos Correa are off to their normal starts, and by that I mean terrorizing opposing pitchers. But it is their blue collar players at the bottom of the batting order who have put on their hard hats and come to work as well. As much as I would love to continue to talk about how great the Astros have started, I would be doing you a disservice if I failed to mention what I was able to witness at the game. After unveiling their World Series pennant the night before in the 2018 home opener, the next night is when the hard wear was distributed. With 37, 106 fans in attendance and Houston owner Jim Crane

standing side-by-side with Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, the Astros players and coaches received their stunning World Series Championship rings. What stood out on the rings the most was the mantra from last year, which is engraved on each ring. “Earned History.” No Astros ceremony is ever complete until you have the legends who paved the way in attendance. MLB Hall of Famers Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio smiled big as they received their championship rings. The diehard fans stood to their feet and applauded and screamed loudly as the “Killer B’s” were introduced. To make the night sweeter, Houston came from behind to defeat the Orioles 10-6, thanks to the heroic efforts of outfielder Josh Reddick. He previously had no home runs and no RBI’s for the season but ended with two home runs (one was a grand slam) and six RBI’s for the night. “I had a good feeling I got that one. The first one was kind of questionable, got a little jammed on it. But the second one, I had a good feeling it was going out,” said Reddick.First the 2017 World Series pennant unveiling and then the presentation of the championship rings plus two wins. It’s safe to say that the Houston Astros are becoming accustomed to replaying the same day over and over. And most of those days consist of a win.
