COMMENTARY
Decision to Bomb Syria is Dangerous, Deceptive By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
F
ifty-nine cruise missiles. When Donald Trump ordered the attack on Syria, he made an impetuous decision, turning his previous commitment to stay out of the Syrian civil war and focus on ISIS on its head. He ordered the attack on a sovereign nation without seeking sanction from the United Nations or the U.S. Congress. For this, he received lavish praise from the media and bipartisan congressional support. He’ll undoubtedly enjoy a boost in the polls. Military force is called “strong power.” Ordering an attack turns the president into the commander in chief and gives him an image of decisiveness and power. Yet the unleashing of cruise missiles against Syria is both dangerous and deceptive. If Trump has decided to commit to regime change in Syria, it is dangerous. Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad is backed by both Russia and Iran, and Assad’s forces are the leading opposition to ISIS, the terrorist gang that Trump is already committed to destroying. If the cruise missiles are simply a punitive gesture, a one-off strike to punish Assad for allegedly using chemical weapons in the Syrian civil war, it is deceptive. The missile attack will have done little but raise false hopes among Assad’s opponents. One day later, Assad’s air force launched attacks from the airbase that was hit, against the same town that was allegedly bombed with chemical weapons. Last year, the U.S. dropped 26,171 bombs -- in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan. The only thing that the new bombing in Syria does is to get Trump and the U.S. deeper into the Syrian civil war, even as Trump appears to be escalating U.S. activity in Afghanistan, Yemen and Iraq. During the campaign, Trump expressed his scorn for regime change and denounced the foreign policy elite for engaging in wars without ever “winning.” Now, he appears to be doubling down on those same wars without any plan for victory. Bombs -- strong power -- are in fact simply destructive. They build nothing. In Syria, the human catastrophe from the civil war is unspeakable. Roughly half of the 22 million residents of Syria have been driven from their homes, including an estimated 6 million internally displaced and some 5 million refugees whose flight has created an ugly right-wing reaction across Europe. Half a million have died. Another 2 million have been wounded. More bombs
aren’t a sign of strength; they are an expression of violent futility. The horrible pictures of babies dying from poisonous gas might have sparked a different response. The U.S. could have gone to the U.N. with proof that the Assad regime had sponsored the attack, calling for a cooperative international effort to rid Syria of those weapons. Trump might have dispatched his emissary to Russia to demand that it join in fulfilling the promise it made to former President Obama to rid Syria of chemical weapons. The outside powers feeding the violence in Syria -- the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Iran and Russia -- might have convened in an effort to bring the violence to a halt, or at least to agree to stop fueling it with weapons and forces. The children’s deaths might have served to generate a global demand for an end to the violence. Instead, it triggered a quick recourse to bombs to “send a message,” ensuring only that the violence will continue, that more Syrian children will be killed, and that the U.S. will find itself enmeshed even more deeply in yet another war. The U.S. has been at war in the Middle East continually since 2001. In the name of creating democracy and security, we have created chaos and spread violence. In the name of fighting terrorism, we have generated ever more terrorists and helped create failed states where they can spawn. What will it take for this country to learn the limits of military force, the weakness of “strong power”? Dr. Martin Luther King got it right when he taught us: The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@ rainbowpush.org. POLITICAL Trump’s Stunning U-Turns On NATO, China, Russia and Syria
W
By Stephen Collinson, CNN
ithin a few hours of extraordinary political shape-shifting, President Donald Trump abandoned stances that were at the bedrock of his establishment-bashing campaign. NATO, he said, is “no longer obsolete.” He backed down a threat to brand China a currency manipulator. In another reversal, Trump praised Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, whom he had previously pledged to replace when her term expires, and once accused of holding interest rates low as a political boost for former President Barack Obama. It was not clear whether Trump’s sudden policy flips were the product of a new outlook and worldview. Days after his administration had seemed to accept an ultra-realist approach that would allow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to remain in control of his shattered nation, Trump decried him as a “butcher” over chemical weapons attacks on civilians -- fueling speculation he now advocates regime change. That position, sure to antagonize Russia, came as the President adopted the most skeptical view he has yet displayed on the possibility of improving relations with the Kremlin, a position he once advanced as a candidate and that flew in the face of geopolitical realities and universal elite opinion in Washington. “Right now we are not getting along with Russia at all. We may be at an all-time low in terms of relationship with Russia,” Trump said at a White House news conference, in stark tones at odds with his former vows to ease the new chill in ties with the US nuclear foe. By contrast, Trump was full of praise for Xi Jinping -- whom he met in Florida last week -- saying that he believed the Chinese President was sincere in helping defuse the US showdown with nuclear North Korea. Trump made castigating China a staple of his presidential campaign, saying the communist giant was guilty of “rape” against the US economy and promising it would be branded a currency manipulator on his first day in the Oval Office. It was almost as if Trump’s outsider presidential campaign never happened as he rushed to embrace mainstream political and national security positions he once publicly abhorred.“Circumstances change,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer told CNN’s Jim Acosta Wednesday when asked about the apparent reversals. On China, Spicer cautioned the administration’s report is not complete on whether to label China a currency manipulator. But he said the Chinese have made some improvements on currency in recent months. The administration has to make its assessment on where

President Donald Trump China stands now, not where it was during the campaign, Spicer said. On NATO, Spicer pointed to the Secretary General’s interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” where he indicated that NATO countries have been performing better in terms of their financial commitments. That changed Trump’s view of the group, Spicer said. It may not be a coincidence that Trump’s adoption of conventional political positions came the day after a stunning interview with the New York Post in which he publicly criticized his political guru Stephen Bannon, his insurgent, populist political conscience. Bannon was dumped from the National Security Council last week in a move that was seen as a triumph for officials who represent a more traditional, globalist foreign policy worldview. His demotion was seen as another sign that the more moderate, establishment-oriented influences in his administration epitomized by his son-in-law Jared Kushner, Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, and chief economic adviser Gary Cohn were rising to the detriment of Bannon and his anti-establishment cohort Stephen Miller. There is no sign, for instance, that Trump is pulling back from other controversial positions -including doubling down on border enforcement and expulsions of undocumented immigrants. Still, the new tone on Russia, NATO, Yellen and Bannon amounted to too much of a sample of modified political behavior to represent a mere coincidence.

egal officials in Los Angeles and Houston have reported a decline in Latinxs reporting rapes, and they believe it’s due to fears over the Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies. According to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, rape reports by Latinxs are down by 42.8 percent since last year. Similarly, reports of other violent crimes by the group are down by 13 percent. “When you see this type of data, and what looks like the beginnings of people not reporting crime, we should all be concerned,” Acevedo said during a press conference. “A person that rapes or violently attacks or robs an undocumented immigrant is somebody that is going to harm a natural born citizen or lawful resident.” Immigrant women will continue to be assaulted in silence if they are fearful of law enforcement.

ispanics in Texas will soon outnumber whites, but only two of the 18 judges on the state’s highest courts are Latino, and a federal judge refused this week to dismiss a voting-rights lawsuit taking aim at that disparity. By 2020 there will be more Hispanics than white people in Texas and by 2042, Hispanics will be the state’s majority racial group, according to the Office of the State Demographer. Joined by seven Latino Texans, LUPE sued Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott and Secretary of State Carlos Cascos in July 2016, alleging the state’s at-large system for electing judges for these courts dilutes the Latino vote in violation of the Voting Rights Act. LUPE’s first amended lawsuit urges a federal judge to stop Texas from running any elections for the two courts under the current system and to order Texas to implement a new process.

exas legislators intentionally discriminated against Hispanic and black voters in passing its 2011 voter identification law, a federal judge ruled. In a 10-page decision issued Monday, U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos wrote that a previous ruling compelled Texas to demonstrate the law was enacted without knowingly targeting minorities, and that the burden of proof “shifted to the State to demonstrate that the law would have been enacted without its discriminatory purpose. The State has not met its burden.” In 2011 a federal appeals court ruled that Texas’ voter identification law is discriminatory and violates the U.S. Voting Rights Act of 1965. The panel ruled that Texas’ voter identification requirements disproportionately discriminate against blacks and Hispanics by making it more difficult for them to vote. The 1965 law declares illegal any provision that suppresses minorities’ voting rights.

How United Could Have Avoided This Fiasco [CNN/Style Magazine Newswire]
nited Airlines has admitted it was a mistake for police to forcibly remove a passenger who refused to give up his seat on a crowded plane. United’s CEO has apologized and said it won’t happen again. But how could it have been prevented in the first place? The easy answer is that United should have offered a lot more money until it found a volunteer to give up his or her seat. Other passengers say the airline offered $800 before choosing people to give up their seats involuntarily, United says it increased the offer to $1,000 and didn’t get volunteers. United hasn’t provided details of how it makes offers to passengers, but CEO Oscar Munoz said Wednesday that United policy denied the crew the flexibility they needed to find fliers who would voluntarily give up seats.

After a bungled recall that cost the company more than $5 billion and ultimately led it to kill off of the Note 7, analysts have said Samsung needs a flawless launch for the S8. BOOKS
‘Dating in the Age of Narcissism: A Single Woman’s Survival Guide’ Review By Demez White, Feature Writer
H
ave you ever heard a parent say, “Do as I say and not as I do?” I’m sort of like that as a writer. I am constantly telling people to leave reviews on my books or articles but I can’t remember the last time I read a book and went on Amazon to leave a review. Blame it on my impatience for remembering passwords and not on my heart. That leads me to the point of this article. I was sent a novel about two to three months ago and I saw the title and decided it wasn’t worth my time. “Another book about dating” is the first thing that came to my mind considering the book was entitled, ‘Dating in the Age of Narcissism: A Single Woman’s Survival Guide.’ How many ways can men or women tell single people that the guy needs to open the door or call instead of text? That was until I was sitting up one Sunday morning and saw a quote on Facebook from the book. So I opened it up and started reading and before I realized it I’d finished it. It was a good book but not because it was information that was new but because of the way it was told. It was unapologetic and coming from a place of no regrets. Novels, where people cast themselves as perfect, have always bothered me. Simply because none of us are. I don’t review books, I’ve to leave that to the professionals. Whenever I read a good book about real life, what interest me most is knowing the person behind the words. Now let me be even more honest. I’m not sure I would have kept reading the book if it wasn’t for the intro to the novel. I won’t go into specifics but it was a level of transparency that is rarely seen in our generation. You could have written this book without being so brutality honest in the beginning. What made you add that part and was there any hesitation? Yes, I could’ve written it without kicking people in the face on the first page but I didn’t think me telling a fairy tale story of my pre-sexual and dating history would have held the readers captive as much as the raw truth would. Of course, there was hesitation. The introduction was actually written years ago and was never to see the light of day. I didn’t want to hurt my family who didn’t know these things had happened to me. My editor and I went through two different intros; one less brutal and the other more jovial and comical. I chose the one that would break hearts because the last thing women need is another damn fairy tale. The truth, however unpopular, always provides clarity where it is needed most. I added this unknown, tragic and secret time of my life to give myself credibility for the reader. How can I give advice in relationships if I’d never failed at any? If I’d only encountered success and storybook relationships could I get anyone to listen to me? How can I talk about marriage if I’d never been a wife? All success is built on failures. I don’t believe all success is built on failures but I believe that you can learn just as much from failing as you can when you succeed. That’s sort of the premise of this novel. I believe the coolest part about this entire story telling experience is the way she acknowledges there are some great guys out there and it’s mostly her who isn’t ready. So many of these books are written so that the woman feels like she should jump at the first great guy. You don’t have “Dating in the Age of Narcissism: A Single Woman’s Survival Guide” to settle, especially when you know your value. I like the book and if you’re looking for something different when it By Kimberly Michelle. comes to dating. You will too.

HBRW: Serving Up Black Businesses as the Main Dish By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
W
Warren Luckett hat to eat is a question that is becoming just as hard to answer as to where to eat. With the wide variety of offerings tempting our palates and the number of restaurants scattered throughout the city that question is increasingly more difficult to answer by the day. New restaurants are popping up everywhere with menus that blend cultures as well as taste, that it is a challenge to know about all the gems in our city. Oftentimes eateries can get lost in the shuffle and close their doors before they really had a chance to be in business. Houston Black Restaurant Week (HBRW) is changing that scope for the industry while boosting the Houston economy. Houstonian Warren Luckett was born with the entrepreneurial spirit so his mind is always thinking of some idea to generate income. His very first business combined the love for reading and the sharing of his personal library. He laughed as he told me how he would resell the books his mother brought him after he read them. Throughout his life, Luckett has continued to follow his passion for creating business opportunities for himself and others leading him to the formation of HBRW. “Houston does an amazing job at showcasing its diversity. And while we showcase our diversity and the city is really known for food, I wanted to bring them together and give our community an opportunity to have something that we could get behind that kind of showcased things that we love about the city,” explained Luckett. Houston Black Restaurant Week invites diners to follow their fork to discover and support black-owned restaurants in the city while building up the local community during the week of April 17-30, 2017. Participating restaurants that highlight the African, Black American, and Caribbean cultures have designed prefixed menus at one of four price points with casual dining options ranging from $15-$25 and fine dining options ranging

from $35-$45. All establishments have also agreed to donate 15% of all of their proceeds from HBRW to this year’s charity of choice, The Blue Triangle Community Center. “Our goal is to rehabilitate their (Blue Triangle) commercial kitchen to allow other black caterers throughout the community to have an industry standard kitchen to come in and cook for their businesses.” Luckett continued, “It will also provide the community center with an additional stream of revenue.” This, of course, greatly pleases Charlotte Bryant, the center’s director, who has worked tirelessly to make the center one that is open and available for the entire community to enjoy and utilize. This model of supporting the local community with culinary endeavors is one that has proven to be successful. Last year’s HBRW garnered over $50,000 for the Houston economy and raised over $6,000 for charity. The beneficiary organization in 2016 was Change Happens! An organization run by Rev. Leslie Smith that provides a variety of programs that empowers people to help themselves. Helping people help themselves is the purpose behind HBRW as well. In the eyes of Luckett, black-owned businesses are oftentimes not as successful as others due to lack of capital and the opportunity to fail. “We have to create intuitions that look to service our financial needs that are willing to take risks based on ideas and accruements rather than skin tone,” said Luckett. Starting a business is hard and staying in businesses is even harder. Mistakes are inevitable. Sometimes businesses can recover from a mistake and keep their doors open but most times mistakes are so detrimental it causes a business to close their doors. “We don’t have as many opportunities to fail. We have to get it right the first time,” said Luckett. HBRW is helping to support businesses get it right the first time in many ways. Besides
FEATURE exposure and bringing hungry customers to their establishment to generate income, they are giving owners feedback from the very people who are recipients of their service with comment cards to know what they are doing right and wrong. “We want to be able to provide as much volume back to these restaurants as possible and oftentimes the best feedback is from your customers direct,” commented Luckett. ach Sunday, your family has a routine they follow. Everyone gets up early to the smells of a good breakfast that Mama makes; she serves all your favorites before you go to church to raise your voice and praise God. Church is also where people can go to pray. Some people get saved there. And in the new book “Early Sunday Morning” by Denene Millner, illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton, some people get a dose of confidence. Sunday is the day your family sets aside for the Lord, which makes it pretty special because everybody puts on their best clothes, shines their shoes, and goes to church together. It’s your favorite day of the week, especially when something like a solo in youth choir makes it even betterSinging is fun, and it’s easy to practice when nobody’s around. It’s also fun when it’s done with someone else but singing alone in front of a microphone, in front of the whole church? That’s scary, even though everybody tells you it’ll be okay. You’ll be looking extra-fine, you’ll have your hair in a beautiful crown, they all have good advice but still, you’re awfully nervous. Mama says “the angels will shout in Heaven” when you sing. Daddy says to “pick a spot in the church and sing to it like you do in the mirror.” Their words make you feel a tiny bit more confident. Once you’re at church, just getting through Sunday School is hard. Not looking at the microphone is hard. Not watching the clock is hard, too. And then, it’s time to put on the choir robe you’ve brought from home and walk to the front of the church with your friends. It’s time to open your mouth and sing… but you’re still nervous. Mama thinks angels will shout. Daddy reminded you to pick a spot and don’t worry. You remember all that, so you take their advice and a deep breath….Dry mouth. A little shaky in the knees. That funny feeling just below the ribcage. Yep, that’s a case of the nerves alright, but “Early Sunday Morning” shows your child that things have a way of turning out fine. And that can take time, as this story indicates. The main character, unnamed but based on author Denene Millner’s own childhood, is ready-not-ready to tackle what’s obviously a big honor; through the expressive artistry of Vanessa Brantley-Newton, young readers can see the character dealing with Mean Kids and wrestling with her fears, and that reticence is easy to identify with no matter what your age. But wait – that’s not all. Millner also tells a tale of a tight-knit community, a close family, and their collective faith. Of course this book is about a little girl’s solo in choir, but you can’t discount the adults, who quietly support the story. Children who love read-alouds will enjoy this book, while kids ages 8-to-10 may enjoy reading it themselves. It’s definitely a charmer; in fact, once you’ve read “Early Sunday Morning” once, you’ll be singing its praises, too. HEALTH
Obesity in Hispanic Adolescents Linked to Nearly Sixfold Increase in High Blood Pressure University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
O
besity raises the prevalence of high blood pressure among adolescents but the increase is particularly pronounced among Hispanics compared to white, African-American or Asian ethnic groups, according to a study by researchers at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Results were published in the journal Pediatrics. While increasing body mass index (BMI), a measure of obesity, was associated with increased risk for high blood pressure in all four examined ethnic groups, the prevalence of high blood pressure was almost 6 times higher among obese Hispanic adolescents compared to normal weight Hispanics. Almost 25 percent of the Hispanic adolescents in the study were obese. Here is what the researchers found when they compared the prevalence of high blood pressure between obese and normal weight adolescents in the other ethnic groups: •Obese white adolescents had an approximately fourfold increase; •Obese Asian adolescents, though few, had an approximately threefold increase; •Obese African-American adolescents had an approximately twofold increase. “We believe we are the first to compare adolescent blood pressures to body mass index in these four major ethnic/racial groups,” said Joshua Samuels, M.D., M.P.H., the study’s senior author, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McGovern Medical School and an attending pediatric nephrologist at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. While researchers are not sure what is behind the elevated rates for Hispanics, they believe health care providers can use this information to assess more accurately the health risks of Hispanic adolescents. “This is also information parents need to know,” he said. High blood pressure affects about 75 million adults in the United States and contributes to about 1,000 deaths a day. It damages the arteries, which can lead

to issues with the kidneys, heart and eyes. Findings were based on an analysis of 21,062 adolescents participating in a high blood pressure screening program. Tests were conducted at 27 secondary schools in Greater Houston between 2000 and 2015.
study, high blood pressure was defined as having blood pressure at the 95th percentile or higher for three consecutive screenings. Students in the 85th to 94th percentile of BMI were considered overweight and children at the 95th percentile or higher obese.
McGovern Medical School conducted the on-going screenings through the Houston Pediatric and Adolescent Hypertension Program. Previously, the researchers had established that almost 3 percent of children between the ages of 10 and 19 have sustained high blood pressure and that obesity contributes to high blood pressure.
Samuels said additional studies are needed to gauge the impact of adolescent obesity on other cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea. Co-authors in the UTHealth Department of Pediatrics include Cynthia S. Bell, M.S., senior statistician; Joyce Philip Samuel, M.D., M.S., assistant professor; and system analyst Tim Poffenbarger. Co-authors Eric L. Cheung, M.D., and Karen McNiece Redwine, M.D., M.P.H., also contributed to the study.
“The prevalence of high blood pressure among Hispanic adolescents rises sharply with weight gain,” Samuels said. “Normal weight Hispanic adolescents had the lowest level of high blood pressure among the four groups but obese Hispanic adolescents had the highest.” For purposes of the

rom Houston to Miami, #TeamStyleMag was upfront and center for this year’s Hispanicize conference, which is the largest annual event for Latino trendsetters and newsmakers in digital content creation, journalism, marketing, entertainment, and tech entrepreneurship. Held from April 3 – April 6 at the downtown JW Marriott Marquis, Hispanicize was definitely the place to be for the who’s who of Latino influencers. From informative sessions such as “harnessing your strengths to build your digital brand” to “multicultural marketing fireside chats” with Pepsico. Hispanicize definitely had much to offer for those wanting to learn how to elevate their brand. This year, components of Hispanicize included the CMO Summit, which featured: •Keynote address: Richard Edelman, President/CEO, Edelman •DishLATINO – A 360-View of the Nation’s No. 1 US Hispanic Advertiser’s #SigueHaciendola Campaign •Pepsico – Fireside Chat with Richard Montanez, Director of Multicultural Sales and Marketing – North America, Pepsico •State of Multicultural Marketing Brands Town Hall Panel featuring, Prudential, DishLATINO, United Airlines and the Atlanta Hawks •Keynote address: Evelyn Miralles, Principal Engineer and lead VR innovator for NASA’s Virtual Reality Laboratory •Cicis – How Focusing on Hispanic Consumers Literally Turned Around a National Pizza Chain •Wells Fargo – It’s not Total Market, it’s just marketing One of the sessions we found most informative was with Comcast Corporation’s Javier Garcia, SVP and General Manager of Multicultural Services, and José Vélez-Silva, Vice President of Multicultural Marketing Communications. Moderated by Borja Perez, Senior Vice President, Digital and Social Media at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, the session focused on the power of technology to enable immersive experiences for bicultural Latinos beyond language.
Yvonne Guidry Conferences and award shows wouldn’t be complete without some star power! Hispanicize Media Group and Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. (SBS),a leading Hispanic media company, and its digital streaming and entertainment service, LaMusica, partnered with Colombian superstar Juanes for a special advance screening and preview concert for his upcoming visual album ‘Mis Planes Son Amarte’. The film screening was followed by a special waterfront concert. We also caught up with Olympic Gold Medalist, Laurie Hernandez, who received the 2017 Latinovator award. Oh, and when we say caught up – we were literally crammed in an elevator for quite some time with Laurie so what better things to do than to take a few elevator selfies! And if you’re a fan of USA Network’s Queen of the South based on the best-selling novel “La Reina del Sur”, like we are – well, yes, we caught up with the one and only Veronica Falcon who plays Camila Vargas. We love her character’s evil ways!
Comcast Corporate And while Hispanicize 2017 presented many informative mini sessions such as those previously referenced, there were also some pretty fun hands on types of events to kick off Hispanicize week. Curated by DiMe Media, the ¡DiMe! one-day influencer summit was a creator’s dream playground come to life. With interactive workshops on creative writing, photography, shooting and editing videos, branding, and social media, this jam-packed event provided plenty of opportunity for learning and networking with influencers. Oh, and it was here that we got to spend an afternoon with the good people of Walt Disney World and our good friends at Jack Daniels! Hispanicize’s Positive Impact Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial, honored Hispanic Americans that do outstanding work in their communities. Over the past two years, 25 Latinos from all corners of the United States have been honored. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Dante Alvarado-Leon, Luis Gutierrez, Felipe Pinzon, and Roxane Hara. Congratulations! The 3rd Annual Tecla Awards, co-produced by Hispanicize and DiMe Media Network, honored those that have excelled in U.S. Latino online video, blogging, media, marketing and those who create it. And while we definitely congratulate all of this year’s winners, a special congrats goes to Yvonne Guidry of Houston! Yvonne, founder of the popular life-style blog, SpoiledLatina.com, was awarded this year’s Top Lifestyle and Entertainer Creator Award.
