COMMENTARY Jeff Sessions Is Creating a Department of Injustice By Jesse Jackson, National Writer

A

s Donald Trump nears the end of his first 100 days, media commentary focuses primarily on how little he has achieved in comparison to other presidents. It’s a mistake, however, to discount the threat that the Trump administration poses to our fundamental rights. His attorney general, former Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, is a case in point. Sessions has set out with a vengeance to transform the Department of Justice into a Department of Injustice. He’s been hindered by the incompetence that characterizes this administration. Trump hasn’t gotten around to nominating any of the 93 U.S. attorneys who resigned at the end of the Obama administration or that Sessions abruptly dismissed last month. He’s home alone in his department, with no nominations offered for the heads of top DOJ units -- the civil rights, criminal or national security divisions. His deputies -- Nos. 2 and 3 in the DOJ -- have been nominated but not confirmed. That has slowed but not stopped Sessions’ efforts to rollback basic rights. He’s reversed the Justice Department’s position of challenging voter identification laws; he deems the Voting Rights Act too “intrusive.” Now the DOJ will intervene in favor of states that pass discriminatory measures to restrict access to the ballot. The right to vote -- the fundamental right of a democracy -- will now depend on the willingness of judges to stand up for the truth, as U.S. District Court Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos did in ignoring the DOJ intervention and ruling that the Texas ID law was “passed, at least in part, with a discriminatory purpose.” Sessions has issued orders to revive the old, failed war on drugs. The promising bipartisan efforts to reform sentencing provisions to end the mass incarceration of non-violent drug offenders are to be abandoned. Sessions wants to revive private prisons and insure them a steady stream of prisoners. People of color, particularly young African-American men, will be the greatest victims of this injustice. Sessions has called for a “review” of all the reform agreements that Obama’s Civil Rights Division has reached with police forces. His DOJ sought to delay implementation of a consent decree reached in Baltimore in the wake of the Freddy Gray killing. Sessions scorns these agreements as “political expediency” that will “handcuff the police.” In Baltimore, the judge ignored the DOJ’s efforts to impede reform. But despite the outcry at the killings of young black men and women, Sessions is clearly telling police they can act with impunity once more. And Sessions has been point on the administration’s efforts to ramp up deportation, terrorize immigrants and defend the president’s unconstitutional Muslim ban.

He expressed amazement that a “judge sitting on an island in the Pacific” could overturn the president’s order. That judge was a federal district court justice in the state of Hawaii, part of the union for 58 years. Sessions has issued letters to nine sanctuary cities, counties and states, including the state of California, New York City, Chicago and Cook County, Ill., threatening to deny federal grant funds -- largely funds for local law enforcement -- unless they commit to cooperating with the administration’s sweeping assaults on immigrants. This arbitrary assertion of federal power is particularly remarkable from Sessions, who as a senator declaimed endlessly about the glories of states’ rights. Luckily, Sessions wasn’t at Herod’s side when Mary and Joseph sought sanctuary in Egypt with the baby Jesus. The sanctuary jurisdictions have vowed to resist Sessions edicts. Speaking for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, spokesman Matt McGrath noted: “The administration’s plan to deny federal funds to cities that are standing up for their values is unconstitutional, and Chicago is proud to stand with 34 cities and counties across the country in asking a federal court to prevent the federal government from illegally withholding federal funds.” New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio declared that New York City will “remain a city welcoming of immigrants who have helped make our city the safest big city in the nation. Any attempt to cut NYPD funding for the nation’s top terror target will be aggressively fought in court. We won’t back down from protecting New Yorkers from terror -- or from an overzealous administration fixated on xenophobia and needless division.” The assault on rights -- for the LGBT community, for people of color, for women, for immigrants -- is clear. Efforts to rollback voting rights, civil rights, police reform and sentencing reform have already begun. The resistance -- from courts, from decent public officials, from activists and citizens of conscience -- has been and will be fierce. Sessions’ Department of Injustice is measure of the damage that Trump can do. Instead of making America a more perfect union, Americans will have to mobilize to defend their rights from the very department that is tasked with protecting them. You can write to the Rev. Shutdown Threat Appears Over, But Obamacare POLITICAL Government Fight Remains By Deirdre Walsh, Lauren Fox and Manu Raju, CNN/Stylemagazine.com Newswire

T

he battle over a government shutdown appears to be over for now, with the push over paying for a border wall sidelined. But one key sticking points remains before a deal is finalized -- on health care, again. At issue: Money the federal government pays health insurers to reduce the out-of-pocket costs for low-income people trying to pay for health care. These are referred to cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments. The payments are a major way Democrats ensured low-income people would be covered under the Affordable Care Act, but with a new Republican administration, their future is uncertain.

The fight over subsidies means there is a growing possibility on Capitol Hill to fall back on a week-long funding bill extension to avoid a shutdown and keep the negotiations moving forward, but few think the subsidies issue would lead to a shutdown. A senior GOP aide familiar with the talks told CNN the standoff will ultimately need to be resolved by the President in consultation with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, but no one expects it to block a deal in the end. Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke Tuesday with White House budget director Mick Mulvaney, telling him that the payments must be included in the spending bill, according to a senior Democratic aide familiar with the conversation. Mulvaney indicated that, while the Trump administration had continued the CSR payments, they had not yet decided whether they would make the May payment, according to the source. If the Trump administration stops making the payments, insurers could try to pull out of Obamacare immediately, leaving up to 7 million people scrambling to find new -- and costlier -- policies. Many insurers have said they would likely exit Obamacare completely for 2018 or hike rates substantially -- by 20% or more, Anthem said Wednesday morning -- if the subsidies end. Democrats want assurances in the spending bill that Republicans will continue making the payments. A senior Democratic aide told CNN that “the position of House and Senate Democratic negotiators is that the omnibus must include the CSR language.” The GOP aide said that Pelosi and Mulvaney restated their positions last night, and said the Democrats highlighting this fight is a “negotiating tactic.” “It’s not insurmountable” the aide said, but admitted the talks “are going slower than expected.” Ryan rejected the Democrats’ push on Wednesday morning. “We’re not doing that,” Ryan told reporters, arguing that it is an issue that is not part of the annual spending bill process.

President Donald Trump Mulvaney told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday that Democrats had made their request on Obamacare subsidies too late in the negotiating process. “They dropped this Obamacare bailout, these insurance company payments, about two weeks ago,” Mulvaney said. “These are things they’ve brought to the table very late.” Insurers are desperate to get some clarity on the issue and make sure the administration continues making the payments. But, Republicans argue that the payments are part of mandatory spending and therefore shouldn’t be part of the negotiations.Administration officials on Tuesday highlighted the concession of the border wall of sign of being reasonable and flexible negotiators to avoid a shutdown. “We just thought that it would be a good first step to get these things that everybody agrees on and take that idea of a government shutdown off the table,” Mulvaney told CNN. White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said Tuesday evening that Trump is “showing some reasonableness on the wall and border security” in an effort to avoid a government shutdown.

ongresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee calls the raising of the minimum wage act “good politics.” The legislation is currently being discussed to raise the wage from the current $7.25 an hour to $15 an hour. This raise to $15 an hour would take seven years to get to that level. “The tired old arguments against raising the minimum wage; that it kills jobs and hurts the people it’s intended to help, simply don’t add up. Studies show that higher paid workers are more efficient workers and that increases to the minimum wage have very modest or no impact on employment, hours and other labor market outcomes. In fact, states with the highest minimum wage are among the most prosperous,” said Jackson-Lee

an Antonio teacher John Roberson is going to appeal a decision to terminate his contract next school year. The Judson Independent School Board voted 6-0 Thursday to cut him from the payroll because he performed a revamped version of an explicit rap song. After students suggested the song ‘Bad and Boujee’ as the program’s marketing music, Robertson changed the name of the popular song to ‘Black and Boujee’ because he thought original song degraded women, and was laced with the “N” word, sex, drugs, and guns. The school principal asked Robertson to change the name of the program and he refused. The program went on and Robertson has since been banned from all campuses until his contract expires.

national consumer advocacy organization and its state affiliate has given METRO an “A” for showing taxpayers how their money is spent. U.S. Public Interest Research Group (USPIRG) and TexPIRG compared METRO’s financial disclosures against dozens of other districts across the country. Each year, the group releases a report titled “Following the Money” which tracks states’ progress providing public access to online information regarding spending. This year, the report focused on spending transparency and special districts. Out of the 79 special districts studied across the country METRO received one of the highest scores for its financial transparency. “I’d like to commend the Port of Houston and the MTA of Harris County for getting high honors in this year’s PIRG report, and leading the way for special purpose districts when it comes to financial transparency,” said Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar. “METRO operations and financial reports have been open and accessible to the public for several years now,” said Tom Lambert, METRO’s president & CEO. “We are extremely proud to be recognized nationally.” Examples of METRO’s transparency efforts include streaming board meetings and public hearings on http:// www.ridemetro.org/. ENTERTAINMENT Kurios Review

By Brandon Caldwell, Feature Writer

C

irque De Soleil has not only taken over the idea of the “big top” with its extravagant exhibitions of artistry, they’ve rolled out series in the name of Michael Jackson & more. KURIOS, the latest series from the performance art troupe lived up to the predetermined hype in Houston. Called “a cabinet of curiosities”, KURIOS manages to incorporate talent both old and brand new in its display of being an otherworldly, steampunk carnival. From jugglers to invisible lion tamers, the act borders a bit on absurdity, daring the viewers to suspend disbelief and invite themselves into the newly minted world. With an added sense of mystery, KURIOS manages to build a connection towards the showmanship of circus acts of yesteryear with the aura and mystery of today’s performances. Even if KURIOS is a new exhibition, Cirque can’t help themselves but bring out old tricks to get a rise out of the crowd. Performers will hang out in disguise amongst the audience, interacting with the crowd or disposing themselves to their own world. But once the lights dim down, every one retreats to their proper position for the show and most importantly, Kurios the world to arrive. The arc of KURIOS is an intriguing one. FINANCIAL Trump Calls for Dramatic Tax Cuts for Individuals and Businesses

Trump wants to slash the top tax rate for all businesses to 15%, as he proposed during the campaign. That’s well below the top rate of 35% for corporations today, although the real top rate they pay is less after tax breaks. A drop to 15% would also be a huge drop from the 39.6% top rate paid by owners and shareholders of so-called pass-through businesses. Those run the gamut from mom-and-pop shops to law firms and hedge funds. In a pass-through business, the owners and shareholders report profits on their personal tax returns. One-time tax on overseas profits: The president will call for a low, one-time tax on the $2.6 trillion of By Jeanne SahadiCNNMoney/Stylemagazine.com Newswire profits that were earned overseas by U.S. multinational corporations and were technically The Trump administration has finally outlined its new tax proposal, which leans heavily on tax never brought back to the United States. cuts. So far, President Trump wants to slash individual tax rates -- cutting the top rate from 39.6% to 35% -- and reduce the number of total rates from seven to three. In fact, some GOP aides suggest vision known as the border adjustment tax that was proposed by House Republicans. “We that the White House -- with its emphasis on tax cuts and too few details on how they’d be paid don’t think it works in its current form, and we will have discussions with [House tax writers] about revisions,” Mnuchin said Wednesday morning. Trump has been a proponent of a selective import tax -- and has far about the president’s tax proposal. Lower individual income tax rates: The proposal calls suggested he might favor a “reciprocal” tax. But he has yet to explain what that means. Tax for reducing the number of tax brackets from seven to three for individuals, which would be break for child care costs: An outline of the plan calls for tax relief for child care costs, but set at 10%, 25% and 35%. Today’s rates are 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, 35% and 39.6%. But doesn’t give much detail. here’s the thing: The White House has yet to specify how much of one’s income would apply to each of the three rates that Trump is proposing. So it’s impossible to say what the change would mean in dollars and cents for anyone. During the campaign, Trump had originally called for those rates to be 10% 20% and 25%. He later amended his plan, calling for somewhat higher rates to match what House Republicans have been calling for: 12%, 25% and 33%. The proposal also calls for doubling the standard deduction.

During the campaign, Trump called for two tax breaks to help ease families’ child care costs. One would let parents deduct the average cost of child care in their state, based on their child’s age.The other would give a tax break to anyone who sets aside up to $2,000 a year to cover costs associated with child care and elder care. The contributions would be tax deductible, then grow tax free. Tax and child care policy experts have said both breaks, as proposed, would disproportionately benefit wealthier families. And in the case of millions of low- and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday morning that the new tax proposal will middle-income families, the breaks could raise their tax burden when combined with Trump’s offer “the biggest tax cut and the largest taxT:5” reform in the history of this country.” Without other proposals to eliminate head of household status, repeal personal exemptions and raise greater detail from the White House, that’s impossible to verify. Much lower business rates: the lowest income tax rate to 12% from 10% currently.

Message Received: Men Finally Going to the Doctor By By Jo-Carolyn Jo-Carolyn Goode, Goode, Managing Managing Editor Editor

M

en protect and provide for others but often don’t care or show concern for themselves. Whether it is they don’t have enough time or literal distrust doctors, men, in general, are not good keepers of their health. They have to be on the brink of death before they go see the doctor. I conducted a very informal survey of men of various ages who were of African American and Hispanic descent to try to understand why men have such opposition to going to the doctor. In my research, I was shocked to find that some men were getting the message about going to the doctor and it wasn’t just because the women in their lives were begging and demanding that they do so. Many admitted that they go get their basic annual check-ups but confessed that their sudden change in habit was due to a major life change or a health scare that could have evolved into something more serious. In his early thirties, Demez White was not a guy that always went to the doctor. But in 2016 when his heart gave him a scare, he changed his tuned. His worries could have been alleviated if he had just gone to the doctor sooner. But he was under the impression that he could “shake it off.” Calling it a “man thing,” Demez said if he was feeling bad or sick he would jus shake it off. Shaking it off is no longer working. “At 34, my body is getting to a point where I can no longer simply shake things off. Doctors can be a hassle - the expenses, co-pays, waiting, potentially bad news, etc. But when I weighed that against what could happen, it became an easy choice. ” Demez took a long look at his priorities and made his healthcare priority #1. That “I am too tough for a doctor” attitude is what Brian Barefield believed in for a while

too. Brian was under the impression that being sick meant that you were weak and you’re weakest when you need to see the doctor. Since men are taught to be strong, Brian didn’t want to appear weak, so no doctor. Besides, he figured since he was a man he could handle whatever sickness came his way. Because that is what men do. He knows better now and sees the doctor regularly. Plus, he has taken on the task to be his brother’s keeper by advocating for other men to get regular check-ups. In the same age bracket is William Ealy who brings another reason to light for not going to the doctor. William was raised old school under the belief that anything he had grandma had a remedy that could fix. Call it Country Boy Medicine. “Growing up in Arkansas, the doctor was the last option,” said William. Today, he stills only goes to the doctor if something is wrong. William, grandma can’t fix everything. Go to the doctor. Another gentleman who wished to remain anonymous admitted that living life just got in the way of him going to the doctor. “Honestly, its been hard maintaining regular doctor visits over the past few years with major life changes like getting married, having kids, losing jobs and finding jobs in this cut throat corporate America.” He continued, “We know that it’s important but doctor visits always end up getting put on hold.” Keeping him somewhat in line are the women in his life, that he is grateful for, that constantly stay on him to get check ups. Also weighing on this man’s mind was a lack of trust of doctors. He suggests the need for more doctors that are minorities that look like him and can know and understand. Now that we know some of the whys men are not going to the doctor, let us take a look at the reasons why men do go to the doctor. We already know the influence of woman goes a

FEATURE

HBRW: Serving Up Black Businesses as the Main Dish long way into pushing a man to the doctor but there are other factors. Research indicates that old age and major life changes as proponents for men to take a more active role in their healthcare. Dr. Jonathan Chism, husband, and father of a young son, agrees. His family is his life and he doesn’t want to miss a moment with them. “Diabetes, high blood pressure, and other illnesses are in my family history. Although I try to eat healthy, I know it is important to detect any potential problems early as possible and not wait to the last second. Life is too valuable and precious,” said Dr. Chism. He regularly gets checkups, eats healthy, and exercises. “We must prioritize our health especially as we grow older.” I once heard a comedian say, “Black people get emergency care, not preventative care.” That way of thinking has to change or we will continue to lose our men at ages far too young. I am glad to see that some men are taking initiative to go to the doctor on their own for preventative care and encouraging other males to follow suit. After years of begging and pleading, it seems the message is getting through. Men are learning that the “man thing” to do is to go to the doctor as it is just another way of providing for their family to ensure that you will be there for many days to come. Thank you, men, for finally listening and getting the message to go to the doctor.

Health Checks for Men

Testicular Exam

Men Age 18-39

Blood Pressure Have your blood pressure checked every 3 to 5 years unless the top number (systolic number) is between 120 and 139 or the bottom number (diastolic number) is between 80 and 89 mm Hg or higher. Then have it checked every year. If the top number is greater than 140, or the bottom number is greater than 90, schedule an appointment with your provider.

Cholesterol Screening and Heart Disease Prevention Men over age 35 and older should be checked every 5 years.

Diabetes Screening If your blood pressure is above 135/80 mm Hg, your provider may test your blood sugar level for diabetes. If you have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 and have other risk factors for diabetes, you should be screened. Having a BMI over 25 means that you are overweight. Asian Americans should be screened if their BMI is greater than 23.

Dental Exam Go to the dentist once or twice every year for an exam and cleaning. Your dentist will evaluate if you have a need for more frequent visits.

Eye Exam If you have vision problems, have an eye exam every 2 years, or more often if recommended by your provider.

Immunizations After age 19, you should have a tetanus-diphtheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine once as part of your tetanus-diphtheria vaccines. You should have a tetanus-diphtheria booster every 10 years. You should get a flu shot each year. You should get the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine series if you have not already had it.

Infectious Disease Screening Depending on your lifestyle and medical history, you may need to be screened for infections such as syphilis, Chlamydia, and HIV, as well as other infections.

Physical Exam Your blood pressure should be checked at least every 3 to 5 years. Your height, weight, and BMI should be checked at every exam.

The US Preventive Services Task Force now recommends against performing testicular self-exam. Doing testicular exams has been shown to have little to no benefit.

Men Age 40-64

All of the above plus:

Colon Cancer Screening If you are under age 50, you should be screened if you have a strong family history of colon cancer or polyps. Screening may also be considered if you have risk factors such as a history of inflammatory bowel disease or polyps. If you are between ages 50 to 75, you should be screened for colorectal cancer.

Osteoporosis Screening If you are between ages 50 to 70 and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should discuss screening with your provider. Risk factors can include long-term steroid use, low body weight, smoking, heavy alcohol use, having a fracture after age 50, or a family history of osteoporosis.

Prostate Cancer Screening Most men age 50 or older should discuss screening for prostate cancer with their provider. African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer in a first degree relative younger than age 65 should discuss screening at age 45.

Lung Cancer Screening The USPSTF recommends annual screening for lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in adults ages 55 to 80 years who: have a 30 pack-year smoking history AND currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.

Men Aged 65 and Older All of the above plus:

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening If you are between ages 65 and 75 and have smoked, you should have an ultrasound to screen for abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Hearing Test Have your hearing tested if you have symptoms of hearing loss.

Ready for Take Off: Astros Looking Down On Its Competition

S

By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer

omething special is going on at 501 Crawford Street. For those of you that may not be familiar with this address, it is the location for Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros who are tied for the best record in MLB at 14-6. Over the last 10 games, they are 8-2 and look like prime contenders to represent the American League in the 2017 Fall Classic (World Series). For the Astros, this is by far their best start since the 06’ season. What has given the Astros a boost is the addition of some key players who have contributed greatly this year. Josh Reddick, who was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in November 2016, is making a major impact with this team. Last night, against the AL Champion Cleveland Indians, Josh went 2-5 from the plate and was very dynamic in the outfield by robbing Indians player, Jason Kipnis, of a home run. His over .300 batting average is what a team, who happened to miss the playoffs last year, was missing. Houston also added journeyman OF Norichika Aoki from the Seattle Mariners. After going 3-4 at the plate against the aforementioned Indians, Aoki raised his batting average to .364, which would qualify him for seventh in the league for batting if he had enough at bats (44). The Astros also picked up a key major league veteran via trade from the New York Yankees. Catcher Brian McCann brings 12 years of experience to a rather young team of talent outside of his teammate, Carlos Beltran. His .851 OPS (.385 OBP/.467SLG) leads all AL catchers. The Astros are looking to get back into the playoffs after a one-year layoff. In 2015, they had the eventual World Series Champions Kansas City Royals on the ropes in the 2015 ALDS in game 4. Up by 4 runs in the 8th inning, they ended up losing 9-6 and went on to surrender game 5 to end their season. Back this year is a talented cast who wants to forget that particular series and last year f(or that matter). Dallas Keuchel, 2015 Cy-Young winner, is off to a tremendous start this year by giving up just 5 runs in 37 innings pitched with a 4-0 record to match. This is much needed from the Astros starting ace since he

Jose Altuve suffered a shoulder injury that hampered him throughout the 2016 season. No star shines brighter than Astros 2nd Baseman Jose Altuve. The four-time baseball All-Star is on pace to make his fifth appearance, and potentially second start (2015 was his first). Coming off a 2016 season in which he had an MLB- leading 216 hits, 24 HR, and an AL-leading .338 batting average (2nd batting title in 3 years). Jose shows no signs of slowing down in 2017. After 20 games, his stats are normal to him, but outstanding to all baseball aficionados (.312 batting avg. and 7 RBI’s). Altuve has clearly shown that he is the leader of this team through hard work and dedication. And it seems to have also rubbed off on other players such as Yuli Gurriel and Carlos Correa. With the abundance of talent the Houston Astros have assembled, a trip to Minute Maid Park is highly recommended. It’s safe to say that the fans haven’t felt this kind of buzz since the Astros made it to the World Series in 2005. Hope to see you there, roof open, hotdogs and brews in hand and yet another win for the ‘Stros!

Five Things The Texans Need To Do In The Draft To Keep Me As A Fan By Demez White, Feature Writer

S

o often when it comes to sports and journalism you have every day writers writing as though they know more than men and women that have been running teams and evaluating players their entire lives. So today I won’t pretend to be a professional sports journalist. Today, I’m just a man that wants to see my team make the necessary steps to become a Super Bowl Contender and Champion. 1. JJ Watt doesn’t make the Texans a Championship team and they should trade him while he still has value. This won’t be a popular opinion. JJ Watt is the guy that every guy wanted to be in high school and the guy every girl wanted to date in high school. That doesn’t change the fact that the Texans are average with him and average without him. They have a good defense with him and a good defense without him. If you can trade him for an offensive line help or package him to get a quarterback, do it. Do it before he ends up like Andre Johnson. Great career and nothing to show for it. 2. Take a quarterback in the 1st round, the 3rd round and the 6th round. Franchises do not win in the NFL without a great quarterback. People love to mention guys like Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson and Tom Brady when they say you can find a quarterback in the late rounds. What they don’t mention is that those guys showed you they had “IT” right away. You didn’t have to wait three or four years to see, they shined in training camp and made the decision for you. Tom Savage hasn’t shined and neither has anyone else on the Texans roster. 3.Keep adding speed to the team. Speed kills and speed allows you to have big plays! The Texans were not explosive enough nor did they score enough points last season. The best way to fix that is to keep adding playmakers that are fast and can do damage with the ball in their hands. Add guys that excite the fans, that can return punts and kickoffs and get the people excited. 4. I understand the Texans consider themselves a gentlemanly organization but where

12 12

Apr. 27- May. 03, 2017 www.stylemagazine.com

are the mean guys? The guys that are a little nasty? The guys that get off the bus and people don’t want to see them in a dark alley. You can win with good guys but you can intimidate and put your foot on other teams neck with a couple bad guys. Not off the field bad but players that have an edge to them. Draft a couple of those guys and give your team some nasty. 5. Last but not least. Just because your defense is good, doesn’t mean ignore the defense. Keep adding to your strength and since there was very little movement this season in terms of free agents, the draft has to be where the team fills holes and adds depth. Draft guys on defense that can be the next JJ Watt, the next Clowney, and the next Jonathon Joseph. For an NFL fan the NFL Draft is about as close to Christmas as you can get. Don’t let us down Texans.

HEALTH Stem Cells Offer Hope for Autism

r. Joanne Kurtzberg shows off a freezer deep inside the bowels of the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank at Duke University Medical Center. Known as a thermogenesis freezer, it stores up to 3,640 units of cord blood -- left over from babies’ umbilical cords and placenta -- at minus 196 degrees Celsius. Each unit is designated by labels with specially designed adhesive to withstand extremely cold temperatures for decades. There are 14 cord blood freezers in all. It is the cord blood in those freezers -- stored or donated by parents in case a serious illness develops -- that’s at the cutting edge of this research. Kurtzberg, who heads the Robertson Clinical and Translational Cell Therapy Program, has teamed up with Dr. Geraldine Dawson, director of the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development. Both saw a great need for medical advances to help treat children with autism. An estimated one in every 68 children in America has some form of autism spectrum disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 30% never learn to speak, and many children even with early behavioral interventions still struggle to adapt. There also are no FDA-approved medications that improve the core symptoms of autism. “I was very interested in collaborating with people here at Duke who could offer medical approaches that could enhance neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to respond to treatment,” Dawson says. That’s where Kurtzberg comes in. Over the past two decades, she had seen children with inherited metabolic disorders be treated with cord blood after receiving high doses of chemotherapy. “We’ve been able to show that with some of these diseases, a cord transplant rescues them from death and also improves their neurologic outcome,” she says. She began wondering: Could cord blood help other children?About a decade ago, her laboratory began clinical tests of children

with cerebral palsy whose parents had banked their cord blood. Again, they saw positive results. And in some of those children who had autistic tendencies, they saw autistic symptoms improve. Another spark went off: What if they tested cord blood specifically for autism? The safety trial began a little over a year and a half ago. Not only did it find cord blood to be safe, but 70% of the 25 children, age 2 to 6, had behavioral improvements as described by their parents and tracked by the Duke researchers. The research is largely funded by a $40 million donation from the Marcus Foundation, a nonprofit created by Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus. The children traveled to Duke three times over the course of a year. They underwent a series of evaluations such as autism assessments, MRIs and EEGs to track their brain activity. On the first trip, the children received the cord blood infusion along with the intense evaluations. Each child received 1 billion to 2 billion cells, given through an IV in their arms or legs. At six months and then a year later, the chil-

dren returned for more tests and observations. “Some children, who were not speaking very much, had big increases in their vocabulary and their functional speech,” Kurtzberg says. “Many children were able to attend to play and have meaningful communication in a way that they weren’t before. Some children had less repetitive behaviors than they did when they came onto the study.” Adds Dawson, “The study was very encouraging. We did see positive results. However, it did not have a comparison group, which is very important in establishing whether a treatment is actually effective.” Both researchers can’t stress that enough: that although they’re cautiously optimistic about the results, they want the science to play out. They are now in the midst of the definitive trial on whether cord blood can treat autism -- a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 165 autistic children, ranging in age from 2 to 8. The FDA has oversight of the study.

Shea Moisture Criticized for New Video Campaign By Natasha Ero, Feature Writer

hea Moisture released a new ad as part of their #BreakTheWalls campaign on their Facebook page Monday that sparked controversy on Twitter. The video features an African American woman, and in an attempt to expand their current demographic, also features two Caucasian women. The video opens with a black woman sharing her personal experiences with “hair hate,” then quickly switches to two white women discussing their issues with hair. The ad tries to push the message, “break free from hair hate” and “embrace hair love in every form,” but the intended message seems to get lost by including white women in the ad. Shea Moisture is widely known as a natural hair and skin care line that caters to black women. Black women expressed their frustration over the ad saying, “The problem isn’t that Shea Moisture included white women in their ad, the problem is that they excluded black women,” @iGiveYouWings tweeted. “Shea Moisture really went all hair matters on us,” @VoteMisskeith tweeted. Black women purchase nine times more ethnic beauty products than their counterparts, according to Nielsen. Women who use the brand’s products are upset because they feel that now the company has gained a certain level of prominence, they are abandoning their core audience. Black women feel responsible for helping Shea Moisture achieve that level of success. “Black women control over 50 percent of the annual adult black purchasing and spending power,” according to financial expert Tara Jackson. Black women are three times as likely to be the head of household than other minority groups, making them one of the most powerful consumers, according to Jackson. Shea Moisture removed the video from their Facebook Monday. The company issued an apology Monday afternoon on all of their social media platforms. “Please know that our intent was not, and would never be, to disrespect our community. We’ve never believed that one size fits all especially with hair and skin needs,” said Sundial Brands and Shea Moisture CEO Richelieu Dennis. Dennis spoke with Fast Company on Tuesday about the ad campaign. “To equate their struggles with hair to those of other women, is in their minds trivializing their struggles, and we can’t forget that,” says Dennis. “What they are saying is…we should keep our focus on our audience, and not lose that focus just because we’re broadening our audience.” Shea Moisture was voted Overall Favorite Brand in Naturally Curly’s Best of the Best survey in 2015 and 2016. Shea Moisture, whose mission statement is “A Better Way to Beautiful Since 1912,” uses certified organic, natural and fair trade ingredients in their products. The brand prides themselves on not using paragons or sulfates in their hair products. Shea Moisture was founded in Harlem in 1991 by Liberian refugees Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis. Dennis’ grandmother, Sofi Tucker, who sold Shea butter and African black soap in a village in Sierra Leone, inspired the company. Ten percent of Shea Moisture’s Community Commerce proceeds go to women-led businesses to support the Sofi Tucker Foundation and the communities that provide the ingredients for the company’s products.

Books n Bros: African-American Boy Starts Book Club for Kids Like Him By Jamie K. White, CNN/Stylemagazine.com Newswire

S

idney Keys III has always loved to read. But at his school library, the 11-yearold noticed a void of books about kids like himself. So he started Books n Bros, a book club for 8- to 12-year-olds who get together in the St. Louis area and read -- about stuff they really want to read about. “I started it so we could read about African-American literature and raise awareness of that,” Sidney told HLN’s Michaela Pereira. Sidney also wanted to improve literacy among his peers. “Most boys stop reading between the age of 8 and 10,” Sidney’s mom, Winnie Caldwell, told CNN. It was Caldwell who helped spark Sidney’s book club idea when she took him to EyeSeeMe, a St. Louis-area bookstore that focuses on African-American culture. “I took him there because he has always loved to read,” she said. “He was so excited. He went crazy.” They recorded a Facebook Live of Sidney reading in the store -- and it got more than 60,000 views. They were onto something. “We thought, (What) can we do to keep this momentum going?” Caldwell said. It’s been seven months, and Sidney’s book club now counts more than 30 members. For $20 a month, a student gets a book, worksheets, snacks and -- perhaps most valuable -- time with friends in a space that welcomes reading. They’ve read books such as “Danny Dollar” and “Hidden Figures.”

Sidney Keys III The club also has an “adopt a bro” program that invites anyone to fund the membership of a student who can’t afford it. Sidney and his mom have plans to grow the club beyond the St. Louis area. “We are looking to make the book club virtual to make it more accessible to kids everywhere,” Caldwell said. They’ve already made a difference: Sidney’s school worked to diversify the literature on its bookshelves.

“The boys seem more comfortable reading out loud,” Caldwell said. She even saw a change in Sidney. “He’s more confident,” she said. “He speaks up for himself more. And now Sidney has a project that brings him real joy. “What makes me really happy,” he said, “is He’s a different kind of kid than he was before the book club.” Books n Bros hosts seeing all the happy faces of all my members -- so happy about reading.” a “pop-up” meeting on the first Sunday of every month. After meeting at EyeSeeMe, they moved to the mall. ollect them all. Those three words put a smile on every marketer’s face and fear in every parent’s heart. “Collect them all,” as you may remember, was kid-code for “bug your parents until they buy stuff,” making you the envy of everyone in third grade. Your goal now: to capture that buyer’s obsession at the level you’ll see in “Superfandom” by Zoe Fraade-Blanar & Aaron M. Glazer. Star Wars is just a movie. To its billions of fans, that statement may seem like blasphemy. To them, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca are so much more, and fans prove it with masks, mugs, mats, and memorabilia they’ve purchased since 1977, epic plastic light-sabre battles in New York, and fan fiction online.

Obsessions like that, say Fraade-Blanar and Glazer, create “Superfans,” which they describe as “those dedicated and serious members of a fandom who… commit real time, energy, and attention to assisting and improving the fandom they love.” Superfandom is what made an illiterate medieval woman create fan-fiction based on the Bible. It’s why zombies are so hot now. It’s what makes some 40,000 people flock to Omaha each year, for what is basically a “legally required corporate triviality.” So can you create that kind of obsession? Superfandom, say the authors works like this: “A Successful Fandom = Critical Mass + Emotional Response + Platform.” In other

words, give your most fervent fans a place in which they can tell others why they love your product. Offer a sense of belonging, perhaps with a touch of status. Encourage self-expression with product involvement. Utilize social media to the utmost, take good care of your superfans, and license your product so they can flaunt their passion with apparel and other collectibles. Above all, say the authors, remember that you can’t fool a fan, you can’t force them to like you, and you can’t insult them without their permission. Always be authentic, but remember that “customers are always right. Fans aren’t.” Though it’s quite enjoyable, “Superfandom” is unlike most other business books, in that it’s not filled with formulaic advice. Instead, readers learn about making superfans by reading about others who’ve tapped into this new pop-culture-based way of “externally generated branding.” Certainly, authors Zoe Fraade-Blanar & Aaron M. Glazer know about their subject: they’re co-founders of Squishable, a company that’s driven by superfans. That first-hand knowledge makes for a more focused book, albeit one that leans heavy. An assumption that readers are tech-savvy or pop-culture knowledgeable may also leave some businesspeople feeling adrift. And yet – help is in here. The authors use abundant cautionary tales to warn marketers away from gaffes, and enough success stories to empower anyone to think carefully of ways that fan-creation may work for them. But will it work for you? That depends. While there are fans of almost every age, this marketing seems to speak to teens and young adults, so bear that in mind. But if you’re ready to hear the cheers of your fan-base, “Superfandom” will make a nice book for your collection. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine.com.
