COMMENTARY Donald Trump’s Broken Promise to the Vulnerable O
By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
f all of Donald Trump’s broken campaign promises, none is more cruel than his broken promise on health care.During the campaign, he promised, “I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid.” But Trumpcare, in the House bill he endorsed, cuts $834 billion out of Medicaid over 10 years, depriving over 14 million of coverage. His budget cuts another $610 billion from Medicaid and an additional $6 billion from the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that covers poor children. In total, Medicaid is to be slashed by 45 percent. This broken promise punishes the most vulnerable. As the Kaiser Family Foundation reported, Medicaid provides health and long-term care coverage to nearly 70 million low-income Americans, including pregnant women, poor children, the blind and the disabled, low-income workers and the elderly in need of long-term care. Its beneficiaries, Kaiser reports, “include many of the most disad-
POLITICAL
S
andra Bland’s unnecessary jailing and tragic death gained statewide and national attention. Bland, a black, 28-year-old civil rights activist was found dead in Waller County Jail three days after being arrested in 2015. Bland was pulled over for a routine traffic stop, but was arrested when an argument with Department of Public Safety Trooper Brian Encinia escalated, who was found to be in violation of DPS procedure.
vantaged individuals in the U.S. in terms of poverty, poor physical and mental health, disability and lack of social supports.” Thirty-three million children -- one in three in America -- receive health care through Medicaid. Medicaid finances almost half of all births. Children make up nearly half of all Medicaid recipients, but cost only 20 percent of its funds. Most of the money is spent on the disabled and the elderly in the dusk of life. Why would Donald Trump break his promise on Medicaid and put the health services of 70 million children, disabled and elderly at risk? Trumpcare, which the CBO says will deprive 23 million in total of health insurance, uses the savings to finance $600 billion in tax breaks, mostly for the richest Americans and for health care insurance and drug companies. The 400 richest Americans will receive a $7 million tax break every year. The insurance companies pocket $145 billion in tax cuts; the drug companies another $25 billion.
costly and disabling diseases and injuries. The wealthiest will have more money but surely less peace. Is this rich nation so callous or corrupt as to abandon the vulnerable to succor the rich? Are conservatives, who proclaim to be pro-life, so blinded by their ideology that they will chose to add to the number of babies dying at birth?
His tax plan is skewed to benefit the very wealthy, eliminating the estate tax that applies only to multimillion-dollar estates, eliminating the alternative minimum tax that insures that the very rich pay something in taxes, lowering the corporate tax rate to 15 percent, lowering top-end tax rates and more.
The Bible teaches us to feed the hungry, cloth the naked and care for the sick.
The immorality of this twisted plan is appalling. More innocent babies will die at birth if this goes through. More children will grow without decent health care, dental care or eye care. More of the disabled will be destitute. More of the elderly will die without decent care. And we aren’t likely to save much money, since more will be burdened with
We’re taught that we will be judged by how we treat the “least of these.” “I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” (Mathew 25:45). If Trump’s broken promise is passed into law, we should fear for this rich nation that has strayed so far from its own values. You can write to the Rev. from conservative leadership. It passed the Senate 31-0 and was sent to the House where it was voted favorably 139-0. “I would have preferred a more robust bill, but this remains a valuable criminal justice and mental health reform bill,” said Representative Coleman.
The House Committee on County Affairs found it vital that law enforcement begin using de-escalation tactics in all interactions with the public. The Sandra Bland Act ensures de-escalation training for officers to keep both law enforcement and the public safe. There were also concerns regarding the investigation of Bland’s death, which was ruled a suicide. In response, the Sandra Bland Act requires outside agencies to conduct investigations of jail deaths to allow for more transparency and remove potential bias.
The House Committee on County Affairs, chaired by Houston Democratic Representative Garnet F. Coleman, held five hearings to review and discuss the facts, circumstances, and policies that played a factor in the death of Bland. He wrote and filed House Bill 2702, known as the Sandra Bland Act, aiming to improve and correct Texas’ criminal justice system to prevent future tragedies The Sandra Bland Act ensures that the data like Bland’s. Similarly, Trump’s added cuts of Medicaid and CHIP in his budget -- as well as the decimation of virtually every domestic service, including the elimination of home heating and meals on wheels for the very vulnerable -- goes to help pay for more tax cuts for the rich and corporations and more spending on the military.

However, one group says that it has been long enough and the statue of the once slave owner needs to be removed and not idolized. Following cities like New Orleans who have removed similar statues from their landscape, the members of Texas Antifa have started a campaign to take a stance against fascism and racism. They have also called for the removal of other memorial and landmark bearing Houston’s name. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has not given the issue any thought and has said it is not his agenda.

exas ended its contentious legislative session Monday as protesters packed into the state Capitol over a new ban on sanctuary cities, and lawmakers erupted into a heated argument with alleged death threats on the House floor. The chaotic last day at the legislature marked a symbolic end to a polarizing session that had considered issues such as sanctuary cities, bathrooms used by transgender teens and religious objections. The new law, which goes into effect in September, bans sanctuary cities and punishes local governments that don’t comply with immigration laws and detention requests. It was a whirlwind last day of the 85th Texas Legislature, but there may be more this summer.

Texas Wants to Use Federal Money to Attack Planned Parenthood [Los Angeles Times]

ive Years ago, Texas voluntarily gave up $30 million a year in federal funding for women’s health programs, just so it could exclude Planned Parenthood from the roster of approved providers. Instead, the state established its own so-called Healthy Texas Women program in which it could set its own rules. Now, staggering under the cost of the program and hopeful that the Trump administration will see things its way, Texas is applying for a restoration of the federal subsidy under the same terms. Signals from the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services suggest the state might succeed. If so, some other states may follow, and the cause of women’s reproductive health will suffer a major blow.

P&G Launches Initiative to Challenge Kellogg to Close Houston Misconceptions of Latina Beauty Distribution Center Cutting 220 Jobs [Style Magazine Newswire] [Patch.com]
icrosoft believes the best way to win more business in Africa is by building giant data centers there. The business technology giant said Thursday that it planned to open data centers in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa by 2018. By opening data centers in Africa, Microsoft will be able to more efficiently deliver its various services like Office 365 to users in the region. Some of Microsoft’s products it plans to deliver in Africa include its Azure cloud computing service, Office 365 business software, and Dynamics 365 database services, the company said. Microsoft said that by opening data centers in Africa, customers would be able to store their data locally, which could satisfy any regulations prohibiting companies from keeping that data outside the country.
ou will still be able to buy your Raisin Bran and Special K, but the company behind those popular breakfast cereals is reducing its footprint in the Houston area after making a change in its snacks business. The move, which will see the closing of a distribution center and the loss of 220 jobs, will begin in late July. In February, the company announced it would do away with its warehouse system and switch to a warehouse model whereby Kellogg will ship its products to its retailers’ warehouses. The company said in a news release that it would give severance and benefits packages to affected employees. In addition to the Houston job losses, 201 employees will be laid off in Fort Worth.

Frenchy’s Chicken Announces Community Partnership for Renovation and Expansion with Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church
F
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
renchy’s Chicken announced a major community partnership with Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church today on the church’s parking lot. Percy Creuzot II, son of Frenchy’s Chicken owner, and Pastor Marcus D. Cosby, Senior Pastor of WABC, said that the original Frenchy’s location that has been housed at the corner of Scott and Wheeler for 48 years will move two blocks down the street to Alabama and Scott to allow expansion of WABC. A smiling Cruezot III said it was an easy decision to make to allow WABC to secure the property since the church offers hope and promotes faith. He did not want to stand in the way of progress. Frenchy’s Chicken and WABC have been community partners and neighbors working together for over 45 years. The relationship started first as a friendship with the families of Creuzot and Lawson. (Pastor William A. Lawson founded WABC 55 years ago.) Over the years they have maintained the relationship to make the Third Ward community a better place to live.
Since both parties have experienced tremendous growth renovations and expansions are greatly needed. Due to their constant membership growth, WABC has outgrown their current facility. Over the past months they have been fundraising for millions to not just expand the church campus for worshippers but so they can also extend their reach to the community. Frenchy’s Chicken has also benefitted from a surge in business and renovations are needed to keep up with the demand. “We are just keeping up wth times,” said Creuzot III. Cosby laughed to say that Frenchy’s Chicken has been an evangelism tool for the church. Whenever someone would ask him where WABC was located he replied behind Frenchy’s Chicken. Soon he will say two blocks from Frenchy’s Chicken, T:10.75” “Follow the scent.” Location changes for Frenchy’s Chicken and WABC are set for 2018.

The hottest temps on record for June in Houston was 109 degrees on September 4, 2000, and August 27, 2011. Who knows what Sumer 2017 will have in store for us? That’s why we must be prepared. In order to know how to stay cool, one must understand how the body gets heated. The first place to get answers is to speak with the folks at the Houston Health Department. Heat exhaustion occurs usually when doing heavy activity outdoors in the beaming hot sun. The body responds to this activity by shedding heat through the evaporation of water from the skin, sweat. This process also depletes the body of salt. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion 10 10
quickly follow if not treated immediately. When the body temp rises above 103°F some signs that a person may be in trouble are red, hot and dry skin, rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and unconsciousness. However, if the body’s sweat system fails and the body is unable to cool down a more serious condition could develop.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback: Big Things Comes In Small Packages
T
By Reginald Dominique
he 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback is the perfect compact car with a surprising amount of room for you and your passengers. Our multiple encounters with Chevrolet’s second-generation Cruze sedan have been a blast. First, we enjoyed the thrill of the 2016 Cruze Sedan Premier, and now the all new 2017 Hatchback Premier 1SF. Hitting the road in this fire engine red hatch was a real eye turner, and we did not mind the thumbs up while on the road from other drivers. Here’s a quick rundown of what we like, what we don’t and the bottom line from Reggie’s auto report!

Also, perfect for the graduating high school senior, every 2017 Chevrolet Cruze comes standard with a new suite of parental watchdog parameters called Teen Driver mode. Small sedans are getting better every year, and for proof, you only need to check out this ride and we are certain you will like the way the Cruze sips gas while still giving you a good pick up! The Cruzes Premier 1SF comes with 153hp 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. Even with acceleration, this engine is surprisingly smooth and its noises are well suppressed. Our premier package was the highest trim at $24,820.

EAT WITH STYLE Texas City Resident Could Be The Next Food Network Star By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer
T
he Season premiere of Season 13 of Next Food Network Star is set to air Sunday, June 4, 2017, and Chef Nancy Manlove has set her sights on winning the top prize. This competitive cook is not afraid to challenge herself. In fact, this dynamic personality has won several recipe competitions; she beat out several other cooks from around the country and won a trip to Italy by entering around 50 of her own creations in a contest held by Barilla Pasta. In her quest to become the Next Food Network Star Manlove states her point of view as, “I’m going to hopefully inspire other generations to pick up a spatula, turn an egg, cook some bacon, maybe visit with other nanas and gigis and grandmothers. We all learn from moms and grandmothers, and I want to instill that in a cooking show.” She is one of eight children who enjoyed their mother’s meals that were prepared daily, while her father supported the family as a sergeant in the military. Moreover, Manlove is a wife, mother of four in a blended family, and has 8 grandchildren. She stated that “she absolutely enjoys having the family over for dinner, and wish they would come more often.” Her family is confident, as well as proud of her, and anticipates that she will do well on this adventure she’s on with The Food Network. Manlove is a former employee of NASA, one of her jobs was to process data, and she even worked on a project that
involved The Space Shuttle. After leaving her job at The Space Center, Manlove became a student again and earned her Culinary Arts Degree. She said she “felt inspired to learn more of the technical aspects of cooking” which could only help become better at something that truly enjoyed. Additionally, Manlove is not afraid of the camera, in 2015, she outmaneuvered three other competitors on an episode of The Food Network’s Cut Throat kitchen, and took home a whopping $12, 800. Currently, she is “The Chef de Cusine” at Eculent Restaurant in Kemah, Texas where the menu is based on seasons and the food is sourced from local farmers. BOOKS “My Daddy Rules the
World” by Hope Anita Smith Book Review by Terri Schlichenmeyer
Y
our Daddy is the King of the House. He’s the smartest person you know. He can run fast, jump high, and his words make things happen, he’s strong, cool, and funny; he’s always making you laugh. And in the new book “My Daddy Rules the World,” words and pictures by Hope Anita Smith, you’ll read all about him. Your daddy is many things to you. He’s friendly as a puppy, he’s a porcupine on his face, and he’s a tickle octopus. He’s tall as a giraffe, wise as an owl, and he gives the best bear hugs! When he’s taking a nap, you try hard not to make a peep. You sneak around and whisper, but there are times when you can’t help it: your voice accidentally gets loud, the door might slam when you go outside, or something might be really funny, and you giggle. You try to hush, but when Daddy sleeps, he’s noisy! It sounds like “horses galloping fast” or a “real horn that blows.” When he spends extra time with you, just you and Daddy, it’s special. He makes a great breakfast, and he makes time to talk about what’s important. And if you can’t talk with him at home (because sometimes, Daddies go “far away” for awhile), you can write a letter and tell him everything. Add a poem or a prayer; he’ll like that very much. Your Daddy might give you a haircut outside, with a “backwards cape” wrapped around your neck. He might scoop you up, or balance you on his shoes so you can
dance together to an old-school song. He plays with you and teaches you how to do things that are fun to do; he knows when to let go when you’re learning to ride a bike, he shows you the value of a great book, and he helps you to remember to be good. Your Daddy is the King of the House. And that’s the way you like it. Here’s a certainty you can count on: every Daddy’s Little Girl and Daddy’s Boy will find something to love inside “My Daddy Rules the World.” They’re going to enjoy the poems; that’s how author Hope Anita Smith presents each chapter and sentiment of a father’s love for his child, and vice versa. Those rhymes are simple and sweet, and they celebrate the everyday. It’s also nice to find poems that are specific to children whose fathers are temporarily absent, and one that speaks subtly of fathers who work late hours. Both boys and girls are equally represented here, which is likewise a very nice touch. Children will also appreciate Smith’s artwork: each picture is created with torn paper, an art form that’s interesting to look at, as well as to try at home. This is a great book for kids to read to Dad, for Dad to read aloud, or for sharing with Grandpa, too. No matter how you enjoy it, “My Daddy Rules the World” is fit for any Papa’s prince or princess. HEALTH
Being A Victor, Not A Victim Over HIV
F
By Kelsey Whittington, Feature Writer
reshman year of college is a year most will never forget, mainly because it is the first time many are on their own without their parents and are able to stay out late and indulge in parties. The memories that make freshman year memorable may not be so pleasant. On April 21, 2014, and at the young age of 19, Deondre Moore was diagnosed with HIV. As a freshman Human Resources Management major at Sam Houston State University, Moore was not prepared for what the doctor told him but decided he will not let this virus define him. In January of 2014 and after experiencing extreme flu-like symptoms he decided to go to the doctor, after being misdiagnosed with the flu he noticed as months went on things still was not quite right and he had a strong feeling there was more going on. Out one night with friends Moore and his group decided to take advantage of the free HIV saliva test the club was doing so in order to encourage his friends to get tested Deondre wanted to lead by example so he got tested as well, the test came back positive. The test administrators tried assuring him that since he had been drinking it was a possibility that is why the test came back positive and not to worry so he listened to them. After a few weeks and still not being able to shake the feeling that something else was wrong he decided to go back to the doctor for a blood test and the next week found out that he was, in fact, HIV positive. “I refuse to bury my child” are words spoken by his mother that he will never forget and what has been able to give him the strength and support to keep fighting. Although at first, his mother was unsure about sharing the diagnosis with family he knew that was something he had to do. “Before my diagnosis, my family was very broken, a lot of us weren’t speaking and sharing the news with them really brought my family back together and I
am grateful for that. Without the support of my family it’s no telling what I would have done or where I would be,” said Deondre Moore. With having a large support system and knowing that he did not want to allow this disease to overcome him Moore decided to start public speaking and sharing his story to show kids who may be dealing with the same thing with no support system that they are not alone and they can get through this. Deondre also wants to inspire families to be more supportive and educate them on how much support or lack of can defer between life and death when fighting HIV. Now at the age of 22, the virus is undetectable in his body, has less than 17 traces of the virus, and has a T-Cell count that is back at 800+. Although he is in a really great state he still has to take one pill a day and does not take his health for Deondre Moore granted. Moore is traveling nonstop for public speaking, in order to raise awareness Moore has partnered with numerous campaigns such as We Are Family, a foundation campaign led by Elton John. He is the new face of the Act Against AIDS, a Whitehouse campaign. He has written for the Huffington Post. He is in the process of starting a nonprofit foundation that will provide scholarships for minorities and those in the Texas area living with HIV and another scholarship for students with below a 2.9 GPA. “Most scholarships require a 3.0 or above and that’s not right, kids go through a lot and we don’t know why their GPA might not be high but they still deserve a chance at an education,” said Moore. In addition to the nonprofit he has also been planning Houston’s Red Week which will take place November 26-December1 2017. The week will feature different events in order to spread awareness and led up to World AIDS Day that will close with the City of Houston Red Gala. Keep up with Deondre on Twitter and Instagram @DeondreBMoore.
