COMMENTARY Trump’s Ridiculous Cuba Reversal By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
I
n his perverse fixation on overturning all things Obama, Donald Trump now turns his attention to Cuba, the island located 90 miles off our shores. Reports are that the President plans to travel to Florida to announce that he will reverse Obama’s opening to Cuba, reinstate restrictions on the right of U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba and curtail business opportunities that Obama had opened up by executive order. This is, in a word, ridiculous. The United States maintained an economic embargo on Cuba for over 50 years. It plotted repeatedly to assassinate Castro and to overthrow his regime. It painted Cuba as a terrorist nation for its support of Nelson Mandela in the fight against apartheid. For over five decades, a succession of U.S. presidents -- cowed by the right-wing Cuban community in Florida -- enforced an economic embargo even though the policy increasingly isolated the U.S. from its neighbors in the hemisphere and its allies across the world. When Obama finally went forward with a limited opening, he was doing more to end the isolation of the U.S. than of Cuba. Now Fidel Castro, the leader of Cuba’s revolution, is dead. His brother Raul has announced he will leave office next year. The Soviet Union is no more; the Cold War is over (even

epublican members of Congress made their way back Wednesday morning to the Capitol still in the baseball clothes they’d been wearing when gunfire broke out at their practice field in a Virginia suburb. Five people were shot Wednesday morning, including Majority Whip Steve Scalise, shattering a sense of security on Capitol Hill. But members’ response to the shooting came down to one goal: unity. In a Capitol building that is typically full of partisan rancor, the mood was somber and quiet Wednesday. Votes were canceled in the House of Representatives as members waited anxiously to get more news on Scalise’s condition. The Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer’s staff delivered pizza to Scalise’s office in the late afternoon. The Democratic baseball team invited the Republican team to the Democratic Club Wednesday night for dinner. Throughout the day, those House Republicans who were targeted at baseball practice were greeted with warm embraces and back slaps from fellow members on both sides of the aisle. Ohio Rep Brad Wenstrup, on his way to do a TV interview with CNN, gave a bear hug to Georgia Rep. Doug Collins in the hallway. Texas Republican Rep. Joe Barton, the manager of the Republicans’ team, recalled in an emotional news conference that his son was “at practice this morning, and he had

though neoconservatives seem intent on reviving it). A new generation is coming to power in Cuba and a new generation of Cuban-Americans is rising in Florida. The vast majority of Americans and the vast majority of Cuban-Americans support free travel to Cubans. So why would Trump want to revive the failed policies of the past? The reasons range from the petty to the perverse. Trump’s hatred of Obama is apparent. From Obamacare to climate policy to Cuba, he seems intent on overturning whatever Obama did, no matter how great the cost to the American people. In the campaign, Trump pledged in Florida to overturn Obama’s opening. Right-wing Cuban-American legislators -- Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Republican Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida -- have lobbied Trump hard to revive the travel ban and embargo. According to the New York Times, Diaz-Balart exacted a promise from Trump as a price for his vote in favor of Trumpcare. He signed off on depriving 23 million Americans of health care coverage in order to tighten the screws on Cuba. Obama’s policy of engagement, however halting, has already shown results. Engage Cuba, a U.S. business lobby group,
published an economic impact analysis on the costs of reversing Obama’s policy. It put the cost at as much as $3.5 billion in lost revenues and 10,000 jobs lost in the travel industry over the next four years. Commercial contracts that will create $1.1 billion worth of U.S. exports to Cuba in the next five years would be broken, costing more than 1,000 jobs a year. Once more the right of Americans to travel would be sacrificed, in the name of what? Petulance? Perversity? Undying hatred? The Trump administration has made it clear that in its America First foreign policy, America’s economic and security concerns will not be sacrificed in the name of human rights. But it rationalizes its reversion in Cuba on the grounds of defending human rights and spreading democracy. This is at best what former Obama adviser Ben Rhodes called a “tragic irony,” given the Trump administration’s “complete lack of concern for human rights around the world.” Fifty-five U.S. senators agree and have cosponsored a bill to guarantee the right to travel between the U.S. and Cuba. Surely, after more than five decades we have learned that Cubans, proud of their revolution and their independence, will resist economic or military coercion. One would
think that Trump, who trumpets his business background, would understand that open relations with this small island off our coast -- trade, travel, human and cultural exchange -- will have far more impact in generating pressure for change than a reversion to the failed embargo. Under Castro, Cuban education and health care became the envy of Latin America. An educated generation now rises to power yearning for more. The U.S. should engage them, not seek to isolate them. In our own hemisphere, we would fare so much better as a good neighbor than as a crass bully. Cuba is beginning to open up. European and Canadian tourism and business investment are on the rise. Donald Trump may get some perverse pleasure from reversing Obama’s policy of engagement, but he will be turning his back on the future to embrace a failed policy from the past. Mike Doyle, the Democratic baseball manager, touched Barton’s arm at the podium to console him. When the House convened briefly at noon, members filed in and took their seats. On most days, members wouldn’t go to the floor unless they were speaking, but on Wednesday the chamber was full. Members walked over to those Republican lawmakers who witnessed the attack and checked in on them. Members on both sides of the chamber listened intently to the comments by both House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Many praised the message of unity, and the appreciation the entire congressional community feels for the Capitol Police.
On the Senate side, Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer skipped their usual partisan opening speeches, and instead admonished the horrific attack and thanked the Capitol Police officers who saved lives on the field. “There are no D’s and R’s behind our names today,” Rep. Joe Crowley, a Democrat from New York, said. Members were visibly shaken by the events of Wednesday morning. Many Democrats and Republicans refrained from politicizing the attack or casting it as a referendum on the Second Amendment. Instead, they said the incident caused them to reflect on how the country might heal and come together after a contentious election and first few months of the Trump admin-

This is a game where Republicans and Democrats come together and put fellowship and bipartisanship ahead of party politics,” said Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy. “I know Steve Scalise because of this baseball game. Ponder was arrested and charged with evading arrest in a “road rage” incident between her and a man she initially believed was Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews. She later acknowledged she may have mistaken Crews for someone else. The Hunt County district attorney dropped the charges against Ponder due to insufficient evidence, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5). The city said that Crews had been shopping at Wal-Mart when he became involved in the dispute between Ponder and the man, and that she was arrested when she failed to comply with Crews’ requests.
HOLIDAY The History of Juneteenth J
By Juneteenth.com
uneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19ththat the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yield-
ed several versions that have been handed down through the years. Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another, is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another, is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. All of which, or neither of these version could be true. Certainly, for some, President Lincoln’s authority over the rebellious states was in question For whatever the reasons, conditions in Texas remained status quo well beyond what was statutory.
General Order Number 3
One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which
began most significantly with: “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.” The reactions to this profound news ranged from pure shock to immediate jubilation. While many lingered to learn of this new employer to employee relationship, many left before these offers were completely off the lips of their former ‘masters’ - attesting to the varying conditions on the plantations and the realization of freedom. Even with nowhere to go, many felt that leaving the plantation would be their first grasp of freedom. North was a logical destination and for many it represented true freedom, while the desire to reach family
members in neighboring states drove the some into Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Settling into these new areas as free men and women brought on new realities and the challenges of establishing a heretofore non-existent status for black people in America. Recounting the memories of that great day in June of 1865 and its festivities would serve as motivation as well as a release from the growing pressures encountered in their new territory. The celebration of June 19th was coined “Juneteenth” and grew with more participation from descendants. The Juneteenth celebration was a time for reassuring each other, for praying and for gathering remaining family members. Juneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas decades later, with many former slaves and descendants making an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston on this date.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us also celebrate the historic Emancipation Park on its significant improvements and the street renaming to Emancipation Ave.

Last week, Amazon announced that it would offer membership to its Amazon Prime service — which comes with perks including free expedited shipping and access to its video and music streaming platforms — at a discounted rate of $5.99 per month for active recipients of federal assistance like food stamps. Most people won’t be able to actually spend benefits online ― at least not yet. But Amazon is likely betting that someday soon, they will. And when that day comes, the corporate giant wants a cut of the action, which is already worth billions to Walmart and other big retailers.

FEATURE HBRW: Serving Up Black Businesses as the Main Dish
Sylvester Turner: Balancing Fatherhood and Politics By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
L
ifting her high into the heavens as if he is trying to allow God to kiss her himself I watch a father bond with his baby girl. Holding her ever so careful, he gently cradles her in his arms with a strong hold, as he dares not let her slip. Pride pours out of every point on his body as he holds the most beautiful thing he has ever laid his eyes on and thinks, “How blessed am I.” Fatherhood is something that not every man has the qualities to be. Sure any man can create a baby but to be a father takes a special ump. Daddies are made tough but don’t let them fool ya, there is some soft stuff tucked away too. Just ask any daddy’s girl that has him wrapped around her little finger. A good father is many things because he has to be ready for whatever is thrown his way. It is all part of doing the job well. Sylvester Turner is one of those good fathers of which I speak. Biologically he only has one child, his daughter Ashley. However, in actually, one might say he has many more children as the Mayor of one of the largest cities in the state. Part of his job as Mayor is acting in the best interest of 10 10

It is a role that Mayor of yourself so freely everyone doesn’t get all of you. So was the case for Ashley as she grew up. Turner takes much pride in fulfilling. With Mayor Turner being in public service since In an interview with Houston Community she was two years old, Ashley, in a sense, had to Magazine, Mayor Turner said fatherhood is about share her dad with Texas and now Houston. understood better why he was away at times. And soon found herself following his lead. Some say that is the greatest form of flattery. Turner calls that a reflection of himself. “So when I look at my own daughter right now, she’s very giving, she loves helping children, and seniors and I smile on that because in many ways our children are reflections of who we are,” said Turner. Just as important for your children to see what you do, it is equally important for fathers to explain why they do what they do. It is a practice that helped him and his own daughter.
Mayor Turner notes that it goes a long way in the relationship of the father and child. According to Mayor Turner, the greatest testament for any parent is to be that positive example for children and serve as a roadmap for those coming behind. The path he has left for Ashley is already evident
in the many acts of service she has championed as the First Daughter of Houston. And the map he is leaving for our children is still being charted as he works to make sure that all children, no matter what area they live in, get a solid

Gentleman Jack Real to Reel Tour Giving African American Filmmakers The Platform They Deserve
W
By Cecilia M. Smith, Feature Writer
hile last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy helped launch a national discussion about Hollywood’s lack of diversity, others have taken the issue into their own hands, choosing to change the narrative by writing and telling their own stories. Now black filmmakers are taking the issues into their own hands, thanks in part to initiatives like Jack Daniel’s innovative “Real to Reel” series, a nationwide competition created to highlight rising African-American directors. Led by Power star Omari Hardwick, Jack Daniel’s Gentleman competition is quickly turning into a platform for emerging filmmakers. “I am an artist. I think it’s just incumbent upon me to help those out that might face the same thing, where they can create a fan base -- I definitely think that they need those opportunities to flex their artistic muscles behind the camera, in front of the camera, as writers in terms of their pen. We just need better stories told. Whether the fans want to see it or not, we as artists have to make them want to see it. I’m always going to champion that and champion people that want to tell good, expansive, dynamic, not run-of-the-mill stories. I’m all about that,” Hardwick recently stated to Ebony magazine. After taking their talents across the country - showcasing short

films in Chicago, Los Angeles and more - on June 8 the event landed in Houston, where directors Anthony Rose, Bebushka Monetti and veteran comedian Billy D. Washington took a few moments to speak to us about their short films. It’s a new lane for Washington, who spent over twenty-five years crafting an impressive comedic career that included a stint on Def Comedy Jam. “Comedy has been my bread and butter for twenty-five years, this is what I do. But it’s [film] is different because I have a different feel for the African-American experience, my stories are typically more abstract and I love a fish out of the water,” said Washington. Adding, “Certain things that I can’t make funny, I put into film. People wonder how Jordan Peele, who is hilarious, could do a film like Get Out, but it’s really just finding an idea that relates to everybody.” Tossing his hat into the cinematic ring, he debuted a project called “Bro” during the Houston Black Film Festival, winning his first competition in the process. Now he’s hosting the “Real to Reel” series and offering a submission of his own, a haunting short called “The Pillow Case” that left the audience stunned during the Houston screening. Praising long time collaborators Christopher Allen and Mikell Limbrick of iRise Films - a place he once interned at - he also celebrated

the actresses instrumental in pulling his vision together, the talented Jaylene Mack and Sydnee Simone. Revealing he’d cast Simone after viewing a video of her preparing for a role he explained, “It was so compelling and this is who I wanted it to be. So I reached out and we shot it in 12 hours.” The result? A short thriller that focused on a chilling secret between two lovers. Also in attendance was Rose, who is currently assisting with the massive press run for the highly anticipated Tupac biopic. After gaining early film credits under the legendary Robert Townsend, Rose has continued to earn his stripes as a director, finding himself on this year’s Gentleman Jack Daniel roster with an entry called “Behold A Woman.” An early crowd favorite, the vibrant short film also featured American Grit actress Chloe Mondesir in an ode to lovers everywhere. According to Rose, “It’s about different women of color, just reminding them that the love is not gone. Even if the media is telling them that they’re not good enough. No matter what time, no matter what era. We value you, we need you, and we can’t do it without you.” Rounding out the evening was Houston’s own Bebushka Monetti, a bilingual artist and producer, known for bringing music to life via creative visuals. Aiming to set the bar high, with her upcoming “A GIRL
HAS NO NAME” visual EP on the way she’s been hard at work as a creative director, producer and video editor. Drawing on inspiration from Eddie Murphy’s star-studded classic Harlem Nights, Monetti delivered a 1920’s era piece called “Texas Toast.” What starts out as a cautionary tale about a lover scorned, shifts to an interesting look at the power of hindsight and perspective. “She reviews the interactions and reveals she’s looking from the perspective and not the truth,” Monetti revealed. Shifting between music and filmmaking, the talented Houston native has decided to embrace both, crediting Omari Hardwick’s partnership with Jack Daniels for giving rising creatives a voice. Said Monetti, “I’m super excited to see what he’s trying to do with Jack Daniels. Giving black filmmakers the platform to share their work.” She added, “All of this honestly I can’t take any of the credit, it’s definitely God’s favor in my life. I didn’t go to school for this, it’s literally just me sitting and learning along the way. And with that, my creativity has taken over.” For more information about “Real to Reel” visit Jackdaniels.com/en-us/real-to-reel You can also connect with these talented directors by following them online: @BebushkaMonetti, @BillyWashington @AntRoseCEO
SPORTS Astros’ George Springer “Strikes Out”
3rd Annual Bowling Benefit for Camp SAY By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer

he worst thing a baseball player can hear is the word strike. But on this night that word was what George Springer and all the Houston Astros players in attendance wanted to hear as they made strikes for children who stutter. Astros’ Outfielder George Springer brought along family, friends, and teammates to help raise money for underprivileged youth to attend Camp SAY at the Third Annual George Springer All-Star Bowling Benefit.
their stutter and find their voice. Camp SAY founder Taro Alexander has the same sentiments as Stringer. Alexander, who also stutters said, “To see the smiles on the faces of those kids who are being helped makes him smile himself.” Alexander was very grateful for the slugger’s help in bringing awareness. “My goal is to make sure that every kid out there knows that there is a place for them to come and feel comfortable about what they are going through,” says Alexander.
Every year the goal is always the same. Raise a lot of money to send as many children as possible to Camp SAY. Located on a 500 – acre facility in North Carolina, Camp SAY is a summer camp for kids who stutter to attend to build effective communication and social skills. Over 3 million Americans deal with the issue of stuttering on a daily basis. And Springer is doing his part to get help to as many children as possible.
Held at Lucky Strike downtown, the event brought out many individuals who are involved in helping kids to overcome their obstacles. The affair co-chaired by Lara Bell and Melissa DeAyala with Junior Chair Matthew DeAyala and Honorary Chair Dr. Carolyn Farb was filled with bowling, a silent auction, and food. Almost 300 fans raised more than $150,000.
“George grew up a shy, but very outgoing kid who overcame all obstacles,” says Springer’s older sister Nicole. She also added that this event means so much to him and he looks forward to it every year. As the national spokesperson for Camp SAY, Springer is always telling of his struggles with stuttering to encourage children to embrace ealth
One of the highlights of the night was the guest speaker. Thirteen-year-old Camp SAY teen participant Reuben Polanco had the attention of the crowd. “At Camp Say, I know I am not the only one who stutters and my confidence can soar with the support of my friends.” This nearly brought the people in attendance to tears.

EAT WITH STYLE Get Grilling Like a Pitmaster By Family Features
S
ummertime meals are all about the grill. This year, give your grill and your family a break from hamburgers and hot dogs, and heat things up with the flavor and versatility of fresh pork. From tender Sweet Sriracha Pork Skewers to Memphis-Style Dry Baby Back Ribs, the possibilities are endless. Make your cookout the best on the block with these tips and recipes from world champion pitmasters Tuffy Stone and Darren Warth: Start with a fresh and high-quality meat like Smithfield Fresh Pork, which is available in a variety of cuts and seasonings perfect for any cookout occasion. Don’t lift the lid of your grill unless you are checking for doneness or turning the food to avoid letting the heat escape or interrupt the cooking process. Check for proper doneness with a meat thermometer and use tongs to turn the meat instead of a fork. Cutting into the meat can cause flavorful juices to escape. If you’re short on time, try a pre-seasoned option like Smithfield Marinated Fresh Pork, so that the prep work is already done for you.
