COMMENTARY An Unconscionable Republican Health Care Bill H
By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
ow devastating would the Republican health care legislation be if enacted? Leighton Ku, a leading health care expert and director of director of the Center for Health Policy Research at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, told NBC that, based on the Republican House bill, cuts in funding for Medicaid and health subsidies would trigger “sharp job losses and a broad disruption of state economies.”
know little about it; most senators haven’t had time to read it, much less understand it. The deception is that the gutting of Medicaid is phased in over time, even as the tax cuts for the rich are made retroactive to the beginning of the year. That allows Republicans to claim the bill is gentler than the harsh House bill when in fact it makes deeper cuts in Medicaid. It allows them to get past the next presidential election without people understanding what will hit them. This brazen trickery is particularly shocking in a bill designed to deprive millions of health care coverage.
“Within a decade, almost a million fewer people would have jobs,” he added. “The downturn would hit the states that expanded Medicaid the hardest.” That includes West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
The ugly tactics may be working. According to a recent Kaiser Foundation poll, barely more than one-third of Americans (36 percent) support rolling back Medicaid expansion or block granting Medicaid -which the Senate bill would do. Only 35 percent approve of the House GOP plan, and the Senate plan is worse.
This job loss wouldn’t be offset by the effects of top-end tax cuts. If the wealthy do create any jobs -- which is far from likely -- they won’t be located in the states and communities ravaged by the cutbacks in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.
Yet only 38 percent of Americans know that the Republicans would make major cuts in Medicaid. The Republican plan is indecent and immoral. It will cost lives and jobs. It was hatched in secrecy because it cannot survive the light of day. No senator can vote for this bill with a good conscience. Will Senate Republicans vote to deprive
Republicans hope to escape responsibility for this outrage by stealth and deception. The Senate bill was written in secret by a cabal of rich rulers -- 13 white, male senators. They permitted no hearings; the experts and hospital and doctors’ associations that oppose it were not allowed to testify. Voters
POLITICAL Lifting Up Houston
T
The heart of the bill is a savage choice: to gut Medicaid -- a program that covers one in five Americans -- in order to lavish tax cuts on the rich -- an average annual tax cut of $50,000 for millionaires. This is a humanitarian catastrophe. Medicaid isn’t just about the poor. It covers 39 percent of all children, 49 percent of births and 64 percent of nursing home patients, not to mention extended care for millions of the disabled. Medicaid funding is vital for hospitals, particularly those in poor and rural areas. When all the cuts kick in, literally tens of millions of the most vulnerable will be stripped of health care coverage. Premiums and co-pays will go up across the board, as subsidies decline. Workers over 50 will particularly be hit with soaring costs. Companies with more than 50 full-time employees will no longer be mandated to provide coverage, as they were under the

hey said it couldn’t be done; but in Houston, we always get it done. Houstonians came together and achieved historic pension reform, lifting one of two significant barriers to progress in our city. For 16 years, our ability to invest in our city – in our families, our neighborhoods and our communities – has slowly been crushed by a looming pension debt and an arbitrary cap on property tax revenue that continues to prevent us from making critical investments to keep our city growing and thriving. Our victory on pension reform is substantial. We immediately reduced a debt of $8.2 billion and put in place a responsible plan to pay off the balance over 30 years – just like the mortgage on a house. The plan also requires the city to make the payments in full and on time – just like every Houstonian with a mortgage is required to do – and protects the city from

cost increases due to economic downturns. When I asked to become your mayor, I asked all Houstonians, in a spirit of shared sacrifice, to chip in to solve these problems. Our city workers and retirees did their part by accepting $2.85 billion in reductions to their pension benefits. Now, the rest of us must do our part to protect and preserve the promise of Houston for our kids – and for their kids and beyond. It’s time to lift the final barrier to our progress by lifting the revenue cap. Our city has lost an estimated $220 million in revenue over the last three years because of the cap, while saving less than $30 per year for someone owning a $200,000 home. I’m serious about making our government more efficient. This year, we closed a $130 million budget gap without raising taxes. Let’s manage our finances responsibly and lift up our city. We can do both. We must do both. Mayor Sylvester Turner

Affordable Care Act. This is a life and death decision. Bruce Siegel, president of America’s Essential Hospitals, a coalition of some 300 hospitals, told the Washington Post: “Let’s not mince words. This bill will close hospitals. It will hammer rural hospitals, it will close nursing homes. It will lead to disabled children not getting services. … People will die.” To add insult to this injury, the bill will also cost millions of jobs -- particularly in rural areas and the Midwestern industrial states that gave Trump his electoral victory. In West Virginia, there are more people working in health care and social assistance than in the coal mines. The Republican bill would savage those jobs and the families that depend on them to survive. They say they want to make America great again, but this bill makes America suffer again. The Truth About the Republicans’ Plan for Medicaid Spending By Tami Luhby, Feature Writer
W
ould the Republican health care plan cut Medicaid spending or not? Trump administration officials and Republican lawmakers say that Congress is not cutting Medicaid, just slowing its growth rate to strengthen the program. Health Secretary Tom Price told CNN this week: “The fact of the matter is the Medicaid proposal in the Senate bill goes up every single year that the plan is in place.” And President Trump himself tweeted that Medicaid spending would rise under the Senate plan, a vote on which was delayed earlier this week after it became clear that the GOP couldn’t muster the support it needed for passage. Yet, the Congressional Budget Office says the Senate bill would reduce federal spending on Medicaid by a total of $772 billion by 2026, and the House’s legislation by $834 billion over that time.
program by 2026, the non-partisan agency said. Democratic lawmakers, consumer advocates and health policy experts have decried the bill as gutting the nation’s largest health care program, which covers 70 million low-income children, adults, elderly and disabled Americans. Even some Republican senators say they can’t support the legislation because of the harm it would wreak in their states.
rather than an open checkbook based on how much they spend. (On average, the federal government foots 63% of the nation’s Medicaid bills, while states pick up the rest.) Also, the bills would slow the growth of future spending by pegging annual increases to an inflation measure.

The House would tie yearly boosts to the medical inflation rate, while the Senate would increase funding by the standard inflation rate, which is considerably lower. Medicaid costs are expected to rise 4.4% annually over the next 10 years, on average, according to CBO. But the medical inflation rate is projected to grow only 3.7% and the standard inflation rate at 2.4%. So what would happen?
There’s no way that cash-strapped states can make up the difference, so they would be forced to tighten enrollment, eliminate benefits or cut provider rates, supporters say. Each group covered by Medicaid would see major reductions in their federal funding -ranging from 24% for the disabled to 53% for adults covered under Medicaid expansion -- by 2036, according to Avalere Health, a consulting firm.
The National Association of Medicaid Directors Board of Directors said this week that “no amount of administrative or regulatory flexibility can compensate for the federal spending reductions that would occur as a result of this bill.” Republicans would end enhanced federal funding for Medicaid expansion and curtail federal support for the It’s true that federal spending would rise over overall program by turning it into a block the next 10 years under both health care bills. he state’s population is still booming, and Hispanic Texans are driving a large portion of that growth. New population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau show that just over half of Texas’ population increase since 2010 can be attributed to a rapidly growing Hispanic community and its expanding presence in nearly every corner of the state. As of July 2016, the Texas population nearly reached 27.9 million — up from 25.1 million in 2010. More than 1.4 million of that 2.7 million increase was among Hispanic Texans. Meanwhile, the white population only increased by about 444,000 people. Put another way: Since 2010, Texas has gained more than three times as many Hispanic residents than whites.

SB 4 commands police to search the papers of anyone who looks like an immigrant and levels hefty fines and even jail time for law enforcement officers who resist. But SB 4 is not just an anti-immigrant law. At its core, it is a racial profiling law, meant to strike fear into any person of color anywhere in the state. It is a Jim Crow law, explicitly designed to submit black and brown Texans to a different code of law than their Caucasian counterparts.

All Eyez On Me Shows Tupac’s Evolving Legacy By Cecilia Smith, Feature Writer
iopics are notoriously hit or miss. For every Ray – there are a dozen others that never should have been made - a visual reminder that not every story can be accurately recreated on screen. When it comes to artists the bar is even higher, raised by the expectations of living family members and anxious fans. So when it comes to the memory of legends like Tupac Shakur, well, the stakes are even higher. Arguably one of hip-hop’s most enigmatic and outgoing personalities, for many the “California Love” artist was more than his music, a hip-hop prophet capable of switching effortlessly between Black Panther rhetoric and carefree classics like “I Get Around.” It’s a contradiction that All Eyez On Me tiptoes around, as newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr. steps into the shoes of Shakur. Bolstered by the success of films like Notorious and 2015 hit Straight Outta Compton, a biopic on Shakur’s life has long been overdue. Gunned down at just 25-years-old, it took over two decades to bring his story to life, thanks in part to a revolving door of directors that included the dismissal of veteran John Singleton. Now the film is finally
here, raking in over $27 million during its Father’s Day debut last weekend. Clocking in at over two hours long, Benny Boom’s vision opens with Shakur behind bars, sentenced to over four years for a sexual assault he insisted he didn’t commit. He speaks with writer Hill Harper as the film unfolds, the audience watching as he transforms from a talented youth at the Baltimore School of Performing Arts where he met Jada Pinkett-Smith, portrayed by Kat Graham - to a rising star navigating his way through the streets of California. While the film shows his time in Digital Underground (with members Shock G and Money B playing themselves) and the ill-advised allegiance with Def Row Records, critics were quick to point out that many moments were missing; including his role in Juice and an infamous scuffle with the Hughes Brothers that ultimately cost him the role of Sharif in Menace II Society. Pinkett also had choice words for the film, taking to Twitter to offer her own version of a few events, including a scene that suggested they’d argued shortly before his death. Undoubtedly more films will
follow, but All Eyez On Me will stand as a noteworthy entry into Shakur’s evolving legacy, flaws and all. It’s strength lying in a passionate performance from Shipp and a fiery portrayal of Afeni Shakur, courtesy of Danai Gurira.
“Brenda’s Got A Baby” and “Dear Mama” are enough to capture the imagination. In the end, All Eyez On Me will stand as a noteworthy entry into Shakur’s evolving legacy. Hopefully, it’s the first of many films to follow.

LaTavia is Using the Low Points to Live a High Life By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
Issues that would break most have just made two-time Grammy Award winning artist, actress, mother, writer and businesswoman LaTavia Roberson stronger. It has made her grateful for her struggle and even prouder of the path she is on now. Gratefulness comes from a place of deep gratitude usually reserved for the high points in one’s life. Roberson’s gratefulness stems, however, from her lowest points. Depression, molestation, miscarriage, and other issues led her down a path where she turned to drugs to cope as she sunk to the lowest point she had ever been. In the mist of that, Roberson was able to pull herself out of that dark hole and live again. African American Music Appreciation Month Still Relevant By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

ithout the beat of the drum, where would we be. Music started from the first beat and has spawned so many beats and songs of today. Always at the forefront of that beat were African Americans. The month of June celebrates the creativity, wealth, culture, and the beat of Black music. First called Black Music Month when then President Jimmy Carter and later receiving a name change by President Barack Obama to African American Music Appreciation Month. “A vital part of our Nation’s proud heritage, African-American music exemplifies the creative spirit at the heart of American identity and is among the most innovative and powerful art the world has ever known,” President Obama wrote. He continued with, “It accompanies us in our daily lives, and it has rung out at turning points in our history and demonstrated how our achievements as a culture go hand-in-hand with our 10 10
progress as a Nation. During African-American Music Appreciation Month, we honor the artists who, through this music, bring us together, show us a true reflection of ourselves, and inspire us to reach for the harmony that lies beyond our toughest struggles.”
That negatively affected the state of Black music today. Fewer Black executives at companies meant fewer opportunities for artists and left many unemployed. Black Music Month took on a new role of preserving the music and its heritage. Today President Donald Trump followed presidents before him proclaiming the first African American Appreciation Month of his administration. “During June, we pay tribute to the contributions African Americans have made and continue to make to American music.
Pioneers of the first celebrations recall that initially Black Music Month was about increasing the growth of the economy as it related to Black music. SPORTS Summer Kickoff: Carnival Cruise Line and Houston Texans Partner for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston

he Houston Texans are big and burly on the gridiron as they dish out fierce hits and mean mugs but get them around a group of kids and that tough exterior just melts away. With smiles spread wide across their face it was hard to tell who was having the better time at the first ever summer kickoff celebration of the Carnival Cruise Line and Houston Texans at the Boys & Girls Club of Houston. Both known for majoring in family fun, the two joined forces to jump start fundraising for the many programs hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Houston. They backed up their partnership with some serious dollars too. Houston Texans Jadeveon Clowney and Jonathan Joseph presented a donation of $10,000 on behalf of the official cruise line of the franchise, Carnival Cruise Line, to the President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Houston, Kevin Hattery. “We are very grateful for the support of Carnival Cruise Line and the Houston Texans. Houston, TX 77056. National HIV Testing Day was established in 1995 to encourage everyone, particularly young adults, to get tested for HIV. It was the first national testing initiative following the HIV/AIDS fallout from the 80’s. According to the CDC, Houston was ranked 12th in the nation among cities with new diagnosis. Testing will make more people aware of their status and able to plan their personal treatment and prevention strategy. Walgreens launched an extension of its healthcare clinic services in April 2017 to include screening for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) at several of its Houston locations. As the DJ cranked up the popular dance tune Wobble by hip-hop artist V.I.C., the energy in the atmosphere was raised. It was contagious amongst the kids in attendance who excitedly made a beeline to the dance floor to do the synchronized shuffle to the familiar mix. Bodies were moving and kids were singing “Oh, oh, oh, oh, All the shawtys in the club....” Right smack dab in the middle of the crowd was a man that was not lost. Not just cause he was yelling, “Turn that up” but because he is 6’5 and 270-pound. Moving right in sync with the kids was Houston Texans Jadeveon Clowney. It was easy to tell that he was enjoying himself. The defensive end said he loves to give back to the community, especially at events like this.

One of the highlights of the event was the meet and greet with the Houston Texans and the cheerleaders. Kids really enjoyed speaking with their favs and taking lots of photos. Carnival gave kids the true experience of traveling abroad by giving each child a summer kickoff passport book that they got stamped at each station they visited. Kids and entertainment just go hand-in-hand with Carnival as they boast carrying the most kids of all cruise lines. This year alone they expect to host a record 800,000 children.

I am glad we were able to team up with two of our favorite partners (Houston Texans and Build–A–Bear) and make our first-ever summer kickoff a success,” said Christin Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. She also added, “Many thanks to Jadeveon Clowney and Jonathan Joseph for helping create some wonderful memories for these kids and their families.” Everyone who had a hand in planning this event shared her sentiments. AUTO Riding High in the Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 Double Cab
B
ungee jumping, zip lining, tight rope walking, and skydiving are just some things that you won’t catch me doing. Why? Basically, I have a fear of heights; maybe not necessarily heights but the fear of falling from a very high height. Ironically, being high is why I loved reviewing the vehicle I had this past week. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 Double Cab Long Bed had me riding high and I liked it. Something about sitting up high makes me feel like I’m a boss. Cars are like employees I have to manage, other trucks give me respect as a fellow trucker, and the truck is like my rolling office. Every time I got behind the wheel of the Toyota Tacoma I assumed my role as president and CEO of my company. Arriving to me sitting on 16 inch alloy all season wheels, the Toyota Tacoma TRD had a height of five feet 70.6 inches. Even though I am over five feet tall, I still had to use the steering wheel, side step and driver’s door to pull myself in the cabin. Since the Toyota Tacoma was redesigned in 2016 not much change was done to the design for 2017 year. Overall the design is very reminiscent of Toyota’s other truck, the Tundra, especially when looking at the grille and tail. One of the standout style features of my Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 was the color Quicksand (seven other colors are available) that continued on the bumper that is usually chrome (this is an upgrade). All Toyota Tacomas have projector beam headlights but the TRD 4x4 trim level has the addition of running lamps and integrated fog lights. I especially like the add on just for the TRD 4x4 trim of integrated turn signals indicators in the mirrors to give more style points. Before leaving the exterior the truck bed I must be mention the bed. After all, what is a truck without its bed? My TRD 4x4 trim level was equipped with the long bed that was 60.5 inches long and 19.1 inches deep. All materials in the bed will be well protected from weather elements with the tanneau cover that keeps materials dry for an additional $650. The cover is really a good deal as it is segmented in three parts and even has straps that interlock for security when driving with the cover open. A 115-volt household plug is in the bed for plugging things up and it has a built in all weather bed mat. A simply sweep with a water hose easily cleans the all weathered mat. A word of warning due to materials used to make the mat may leave items in the bed sliding around while driving depending on what they are so be use to use the hooks to tie them down. Space is so not a problem inside the Toyota Tacoma. The average side adult will be quite comfortable with the ample head and legroom. Front seats are 4 way manual with lumbar support and all five passengers’ eyes will be intrigued by the geometric pattern in the seats and Toyota badging throughout vehicle. Materials used throughout the body are durable so it is ok to be a little rough and tough with it. The leather wrapped tilt and telescope

steering wheel is loaded with technology for voice commands, hands free phone usage, controlling audio and the driver’s instrument panel so eyes can stay focused on the road ahead. Simplicity is key in the design with everything from the driver’s instrument panel to the center entune system with controls that are manageable to maneuver without being complicated to control. A 7-inch full color touchscreen is standard on the TRD 4x4 trim that includes plenty of apps like navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, vehicle information and more. Most vital in this area is the backup camera especially since backseat passengers’ headrests obscure the driver’s vision a little. Most unique to the Tacoma is the designed area for cell phones complete with Chi wireless charging pad. No need for a plug or USB! However, USB, auxiliary and two 12-volt power outlets are available. At first glance one would think inside storage is minimal since the only storage seen in for bottles in the doors and the rather large and deep center console, and illuminated glove box. Investigating a little further and one will discover storage behind the backseat and in the floor under the feet of the backseat passengers. Plus, backseats can fold down for a flat surface. Pretty cleaver Toyota! Purchasing the additional premium and technology package will upgrade your ride with JBL audio, dual zone climate controls, heated front seats, parking sonar, blind spot monitor, color key bumper, auto headlamps, rear cross traffic alert, and moonroof. It even comes standard with a Go Pro mount.
Toyota Tacoma
I know you are wondering when I am going to get to the drive of the Toyota Tacoma. Ask and you shall receive. I absolutely loved driving this truck. My city is known for its potholes and the Tacoma showed them whose boss by gliding right over them. Under the hood was a 3.5-liter V6 engine with six-speed automatic transmission that produced 278 horsepower and 265 lbs feet of torque. Surprisingly, the fuel economy is pretty decent with the 21.1-gallon gas tank that goes the distance of 422 miles. Off road capability is the star of this truck. In the city, I really didn’t notice this. But when I got in the country I noticed how riding on the rough terrain was similar to that of riding on the slick city streets. What? I know but I am referring to the fact that I wasn’t bouncing all over the cabin. I always felt in control and that is good feeling when driving. Before viewing the Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 trucks were attractive for the sheer height that I could have while driving. Then the Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 open my eyes to fall for many more reasons. With the specialty premium and technology package and a few other upgrades my 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 Double Cab was priced at $42,729.00. But if that is too steep the starting base price for the entry level Toyota Tacoma is $24,320. EAT WITH STYLE Good Eats with Grapes Make a heart-healthy menu with flavorful fruit By Family Features
H
eart-healthy foods can play a role in healthy aging. Whether you enjoy them by the handful as a refreshing snack or use them to add color, crunch and a touch of sweetness to a meal, grapes are a heart-healthy option that make eating better easy.
Grapes of all colors – red, green and black – are a natural source of beneficial antioxidants and other polyphenols. At just 90 calories per serving, they also contain no fat, no cholesterol and virtually no sodium. With a juicy burst of flavor, grapes show how simple it can be to make goodfor-you-dishes that also taste great. Even though California grapes are a snacking staple in most kitchens, you may not realize how versatile they can be for cooking. For example, grapes add a sweet touch to a crunchy yogurt salad and complement the bold spice on a skewer of grilled shrimp. Fresh, flavorful grapes even put a tangy, fresh twist on a soothing glass of iced tea. Find more delicious recipes to make healthy eating easy at GrapesfromCalifornia.com. TRAVEL
Las Terrazas Resort in Belize; The Resort That Has Everything
L
By Demez White, Feature Writer
ocated 3.5 miles north of San Pedro, tucked away in the small country of Belize is a secret treasure called the Las Terrazas Resort. With its white sand beaches that go on for miles and tall palm trees swaying in the wind, it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited on earth and one of the most tranquil. Hard to believe it is just two and a half hours away from the states. In order to get to Las Terrazas, I had to land at the main airport in Belize City, take another plane to a small island and board a boat to get to my final destination of paradise. Those small trips set the stage for a great escape that started with me when I stepped onto the boardwalk for Las Terrazas. Hospitality was laid on thick from the moment of my arrival to my departure. And it’s wasn’t just I received special treatment as a member of the media but it is the attention given to every guest. An employee personally welcomes everyone to the resort. Upon my arrival, the General Manager Julian Burton with a cocktail featuring the island’s world class rum in tow greeted me. Burton was the perfect example of what the employees represent that work at Las Terrazas Resort. He was engaging, plugged into everything that was taking place at
Las Terrazas and loved the Resort. Before immersing myself in activity, Burton allowed me to get settled in my suite for the weekend. I don’t think I know the words to adequately describe how amazing my room was. My eyes darted back and fourth as I viewed the big and roomy living room with mahogany furniture, fully functioning kitchen with cookware, two extravagant bathrooms, master and guest room and a view overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It was heavenly. Night came quickly on my first day in Belize, which meant dinner was close to follow. I was in for a treat for my first meal at Las Terrazas. It was a buffet and rum tasting. The food was native to Belize with a featured mix between Creole dishes and Spanish dishes. It was scrumptious. The food had my taste buds dancing and I couldn’t wait to see what breakfast would be the next morning. I was up and adam the next day to get a jumpstart on breakfast. I dined at the signature restaurant at the resort, O Restaurant and Bar. While my companion slept, I took a deep in the pool to eat poolside. I could have stayed all day but Belize is too pretty of a place to just sit in a pool all day no matter how nice it is. The crew that took me on my snorkeling adventure dished out hospitality in a major way. The crew has the patients of Job and made ever accommodations for passengers. Not being a fan of water, I tensed up. However, the crew eased my fears. I was so glad too because I was allowed to see beautiful coral reefs and an array of fish. For my first ever snorkeling trip, I felt so alive. The most terrifyingly beautiful thing about snorkeling were the sharks that swim right up to you. After spending all morning on the water, lunch was welcomed at the O Restaurant. Followed by a relaxing massage at the newly renovated Las Terrazas spa. Workers have magic hands as they relaxed every stress point in my body. Feeling hungry, I made my way back to the boat for lunch with Chef Nolvin. Sitting poolside under a cabana, I devoured a three course meal. Sushi was the star of menu. My guest and I tried everything and each bite was a delicious journey for my tongue. The next day was one of relaxation. I spent the day watching one of the local workers trying to teach me how to climb a coconut tree and I took in a tour of San

Pedro Island, which you can get to by golf cart or boat. Wanting to experience every advantage possible on the island I took a tour guide with me. I appreciated the fact that I didn’t have to convert my currency. English is the official language, which made communicating easy. You can also use American dollars and move around freely without feeling lost which can tend to happen in a lot of countries where you don’t speak the language. A four course meal was served at my last dinner on the cruise and one of my favs was being offered as the featured course. Since we were lucky that our trip was during wedding season, we dined on lobster bisque followed by fresh lobster tails and freshly caught fish. Finishing with a flaming dessert. Overall I couldn’t have asked for a better experience than the one I received. Las Terrazas Resort is the perfect place for couples that are adventurous or simple want to lounge by a beach. I give it Five Style Points! Find out more information, online at www.lasterrazasresort.com.

H-E-B Tournament of Champions Summer Jazz Workshop Photography by Vicky Pink t is a proven fact that children need the arts to make them well rounded people. Jazz Education Inc. founded by Bubbha Thomas knew the impact of kids and saw a lack of music education in schools. He established JEI to fill that void. An entity of JEI is the H-E-B Tournament of Champions Summer Jazz Workshop. The five-week intensive summer youth camp focuses on the fundamentals of music and its associated business aspects for young musicians. Lending their talents to this year’s workshop were Kirk Whalum Sr, Kyle Turner, William Thomas, Al Campbell, Lloyd Hughes, Brent Nabors, Kelly Dean, Gaila Queensusique, John Schutza, Chris Dave, Donald Patterson, LaRon Land, Will Minix, and others.
