OF JOY AND GIVING

The halls of Betsy Ross Elementary in Houston came alive with festive cheer on Friday, December 6, 2024, as the Daisie Foundation, in collaboration with the Houston Police Department's Greater Houston Police Athletic League (GHPAL), hosted an unforgettable Holiday Magic dance-themed party. With more than 400 students, teachers, and staff in attendance, the event turned an ordinary day into a heartwarming celebration of giving, community, and joy.

From the moment attendees stepped into the transformed school, they were immersed in a whirlwind of holiday spirit. Students received a treasure trove of surprises, including games, brand-new clothing, and Houston Astros-themed backpacks. The day reached its peak with a lively pizza party, generously sponsored by Domino’s Pizza. Teachers weren’t left out of the festivities, walking away with an assortment of cosmetics and gifts. Adding to the culinary delight, Gatlin’s BBQ provided a sumptuous lunch, filling the air with tantalizing aromas that matched the warmth of the occasion.

VIP Appearances and Sponsors Who Made It Possible

This year’s event welcomed a roster of distinguished guests, including HISD Superintendent Mike Miles, Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz, and Congressman-Elect Sylvester Turner. Adding a sparkle of media glamour were emcees Len Cannon from KHOU-TV and Chelsea Edwards, host of Chattin' with Chelsea on Fox 26.

The event’s success was made possible by a stellar lineup of sponsors whose unwavering support brought smiles to every face. A heartfelt thank-you goes to Reliant Energy, Kroger Department Stores, Shiraleah, Benefit Cosmetics, AbbVie, Raising Cane’s Chicken, Domino’s Pizza, Gatlin’s Fins & Feathers, Houston Police Credit Union, Visible Changes, Houston Astros, Panera Bread, and the Blossom Hotel. COMMENTARY

The incoming Trump administration is supposedly interested in “efficiency.”

It has a whole quasigovernmental department – the Elon Musk- and Vivek Ramaswamy-chaired Department of Government Efficiency – purportedly ready to take aim at government waste. So why are the very same people going to such extremes to make wasting energy one of their highest priorities?

Among the final acts of the MAGA-led House of Representatives to end this Congress was the passage of the absurdly named Liberty in Laundry Act. It prohibits the Secretary of Energy from setting or enforcing energy efficiency standards for clothes washers and dryers. It is but one of several legislative attacks on energy efficient home appliances, like dishwashers and refrigerators, advanced by the House’s Republican majority. While the bill may have no chance of passing in the Senate, this is a clear signal about the GOP’s backwards priorities in the next Congress.

Energy efficiency simply means an appliance uses less energy to do its job. It not only can save households hundreds of dollars a year, it is one of the best – and most readily accessible – ways to reduce

greenhouse gas emissions from homes and buildings, and mitigate our impact on the climate. Not only that, it is an area where the product manufacturers, sellers, and climate advocates agree.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is required by law to regularly evaluate and set energy efficiency standards for a wide range of appliances. Yet every time the DOE wants to ensure we have options that meet at least a minimum standard, it seems there is an extremist politician or talking head ready to scaremonger about Big Government coming into your home to take your beloved

appliances. In reality, energy efficiency standards simply provide consumers with better choices – more high-tech products that work even better than outdated inefficient models and will save households money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (a fifth of which in the US come from people’s homes).

Donald Trump has railed against water efficient toilets and showerheads, and against replacing inefficient lightbulbs that still use the same basic design from over a hundred years ago and waste up to 90% of the electricity powering them. After all, Thomas Edison’s invention was

ground-breaking at the time, but technology has come a long way since then.

In 2023, far-right media and politicians tried to ignite a firestorm over gas stoves, peddling the falsehood that the Biden administration was trying to ban them. In reality, the DOE proposed improved efficiency standards for both gas and electric stoves that would not go into effect until 2027 and would help consumers save as much as an estimated $1.7 billion. This is part-in-parcel of the myths being used to stoke outrage about regulations that would protect consumers – both their wallets and their health (don’t forget that producing excess energy from fossil fuels adds to the climate crisis and the air and water pollution that kills and sickens millions of Americans every year).

ILOCAL: HOUSTON HONORS A LEGACY: CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO RENAME IAH AIRPORT TERMINAL E FOR SHEILA JACKSON LEE

n a heartfelt move symbolizing the power of public service and legacy, the Houston City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, to rename Terminal E at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in honor of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Representing the airport’s area for nearly three decades and previously serving as an at-large City Council Member and Municipal Judge, Jackson Lee’s name will now be forever etched into Houston’s history —and the nation’s aviation infrastructure.

A Fitting Tribute to a Trailblazer

Erica Lee Carter, the Congresswoman’s daughter and recently elected to complete her mother’s Congressional term, expressed deep gratitude from Washington, D.C., where she was immersed in federal budget negotiations. “Naming Terminal E after my mom is not just a tribute to her federal-level work but also to the love and service she poured into this city and its people,” Lee Carter reflected. “Her legacy is one of progress, unity, and tireless service. May we all strive to uphold those values.” The initiative to honor Jackson Lee was

championed by Houston City Council Member Edward Pollard, who underscored her immense contributions to Houston. “This is a woman who gave her all to our city,” Pollard stated. “She brought over $125 million in federal funds to support Houston’s largest airport facility. Naming Terminal E in her honor is both meaningful and significant—a lasting testament to her dedication.”

Houston's Tradition of Honoring Visionaries

Houston has a storied tradition of naming aviation facilities after luminaries who shaped the city and its future. The entire George Bush Intercontinental Airport honors the 41st U.S. President George H.W.

Bush. Terminal C recognizes Mayor Lewis Cutrer, whose leadership was instrumental in constructing the airport. Terminal D bears the name of Congressman Mickey Leland, a champion of global humanitarian efforts tragically lost during a famine relief mission in Ethiopia.

William P. Hobby Airport and Ellington Airport similarly reflect the region’s respect for its trailblazers, named for Governor William Hobby and Army Lt. Eric Lamar Ellington, respectively.

Legacy in Motion

While the renaming of Terminal E won’t be immediate—requiring administrative reviews, public comments, and final approval—Houston City Attorney Arturo

Michel emphasized the Mayor’s crucial role in ensuring the process reflects the city’s collective will.

For Houston Style Magazine, this tribute strikes a deeply personal chord. Sheila Jackson Lee was a towering figure whose unwavering commitment to equity and opportunity inspired generations. Burt Levine, columnist for this publication, aptly sums it up: “This action by the Houston City Council ensures that her trailblazing efforts will continue to inspire travelers and Houstonians alike. Sheila Jackson Lee wasn’t just a public servant; she was a force for progress.”

A Name that Resonates

Terminal E will not just be a gateway to destinations worldwide but a symbol of perseverance, public service, and the indomitable spirit of a woman who gave everything for her city. As travelers pass through, they’ll encounter more than an airport terminal— they’ll witness a legacy of leadership etched into the very fabric of Houston.

On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Harris County celebrated International Migrants Day, a day that highlights the invaluable contributions of immigrants to our communities. This year’s commemoration was led by the Harris County Commissioners, who reaffirmed the county’s steadfast commitment to protecting immigrant rights and ensuring dignity for all. As the Commissioners emphasized, Harris County is a vibrant mosaic of people from every corner of the world—a true testament to the strength that diversity brings to our economy, culture, and future.

Harris County Commissioners Stand United

During the event, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis addressed the challenges facing the immigrant community, particularly in light of the incoming presidential administration’s proposed mass deportation policies. Commissioner Ellis stated, “Immigrants are the heartbeat of Harris County. They enrich our economy, strengthen our culture, and inspire us with their resilience. We will not stand by and allow fear and rhetoric to divide the fabric of our community.”

President-elect Trump’s announcement of what he calls "the largest deportation effort in American history" has sent waves of concern across immigrant communities

As the sun sets on another historic election cycle, Latino Victory is blazing a trail into the future with bold leadership, renewed vision, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting Latino voices across America. The powerhouse organization, co-founded by icons Eva Longoria Bastón and Henry R. Muñoz III, has become a beacon of hope and action, building a political force that reflects the strength and diversity of the Latino community.

Now, with the announcement of its new leadership team, Latino Victory is poised to double down on its mission of advancing representation and championing the values that matter most to Latinos nationwide.

A Leadership Team Like No Other

At the helm of this next chapter is Cristóbal J. Alex, the newly elected Board Chair. A native of El Paso with deep Mexican-American roots, Alex is no stranger to breaking barriers. As the founding president of Latino Victory and a former White House Deputy Cabinet Secretary under President Joe Biden, Alex has spent decades advocating for equity, inclusion, and opportunity.

In his most recent feat, Alex led the largest-ever independent Latino political expenditure—a jaw-dropping $50 million—

Standing Strong: Harris County's Commitment to Immigrant Rights

nationwide. While the initial focus may be on those with criminal records, history has shown that such policies often cast a much wider net, threatening the stability of families and entire communities. Recognizing this threat, the Harris County Commissioners pledged to support residents in staying informed, empowered, and prepared.

Practical Guidance: Know Your Rights

The Harris County Commissioners highlighted key rights that every resident— regardless of immigration status—should know:

•Right to Remain Silent: Commissioner Adrian Garcia emphasized the importance of the 5th Amendment, saying, “You are not obligated to discuss your immigration status with law enforcement.

Knowing your rights is the first step in protecting them.”

•Right to Refuse Search: Commissioner Ellis reminded residents, “Under the 4th Amendment, you can refuse consent to searches unless presented with a valid warrant. This applies to both local law enforcement and immigration officials. Stay calm and ask to see the warrant.”

•Right to Legal Representation: Immigration matters are civil, and individuals must secure their own legal representation. Commissioner Lesley Briones urged, “Have a plan in place. Knowing how to contact an immigration attorney can make all the difference.”

•Safe Spaces: Certain locations— like schools, healthcare facilities, and places of worship—are protected from immigra-

tion enforcement. “These spaces remain safe havens,” Commissioner Garcia assured. “No one should fear seeking education, healthcare, or spiritual solace.”

A Call to Action: Harris County Leads the Way

The Commissioners called on all Harris County residents to stand together in solidarity with their immigrant neighbors. “This isn’t just about protecting individuals,” said Commissioner Briones. “It’s about safeguarding the principles of justice, inclusion, and community that define Harris County. We all thrive when every member of our community feels safe and valued.”

As we prepare for a new chapter in national politics, Harris County remains a beacon of hope and justice. The Commissioners reiterated their commitment to leveraging every available resource to protect immigrant rights and keep families intact.

Looking Ahead with Optimism Houston Style Magazine readers, International Migrants Day serves as a reminder that immigrants are vital to our shared prosperity.

Joining Alex in this mission is the inspiring Dr. Erika Gonzalez-Reyes, the new Vice Chair. A trailblazer in healthcare and a champion for underserved communities, Gonzalez-Reyes brings a unique perspective to the table. As an Asthma and Allergy Specialist and a Texas Lyceum Director, her leadership extends far beyond medicine, making her a perfect fit to shape the organization’s future.

But that’s not all—Latino Victory is also thrilled to welcome Katharine Pichardo-Erskine as its new President and CEO.

With more than 25 years of experience in political strategy, civic engagement, and leadership, Pichardo-Erskine embodies

the power of resilience and representation.

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York City, she has shattered glass ceilings, helping to elect history-making leaders like the first Dominican-American member of Congress and New York’s first woman of color Attorney General.

“This is an exhilarating time for Latino Victory,” said Pichardo-Erskine.

“The Latino vote has proven its power, but our work is far from over. Together, we will ensure Latino voices are not just heard but lead the conversations shaping our future.”

Celebrating a Legacy of Transformation

While the future looks bright, Latino Victory also takes a moment to honor its past. Outgoing Board Chair Luis

A. Miranda Jr. leaves an indelible mark on the organization, having guided it through a period of unparalleled growth. Under his leadership, Latino Victory supported over 300 Latino candidates across the nation, transforming the political landscape and paving the way for the next generation of leaders.

Outgoing President Sindy Benavides also leaves a legacy of innovation and impact. From spearheading the #VoteLikeAMadre initiative to launching the Afro-Latinas Lead program, her tenure has been marked by groundbreaking efforts to expand Latino representation at every level of government.

“We are standing on the shoulders of giants,” said Alex. “Luis and Sindy have laid a strong foundation, and we are ready to build on it to achieve even greater success in the years ahead.”

Sudhoff, a mother herself to a dyslexic son, drew deeply personal inspiration for the piece. “Even though your brain works differently, it still lights up and is beautiful to watch—a wonderful machine you have.

It just means you have to navigate and pivot a little differently,” she shared. Her son’s love for bold sculptures and the color red played a pivotal role in shaping this organic, brain-like structure that bursts

This package includes a high-downforce Carbon Fiber Aero Kit that generates over 1,200 pounds of downforce at top speed, ensuring every ounce of power translates to precision handling. Sitting on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires, the ZR1 achieves lightning-quick launches thanks to its advanced Launch Control and Custom Launch Control features.

Whether you’re aiming to carve through corners at your local track or cruise the open highway with the roar of 1,064 horses under the hood, the ZR1 transforms every drive into an experience.
