COMMENTARY

Time for a Citizens’ Commission On Defending the Right to Vote

D

By Jesse Jackson, National Writer

onald Trump’s commission on “election integrity” is meeting sensible resistance. The commission issued letters calling on states to provide it with extensive personal information on all voters, including names, addresses, birthdates, party affiliation, the last 4 digits Social Security numbers, military status and criminal records. This data collection would be targeted by every cyber thief in the world. At least 20 states have already indicated that they would not comply completely, including California, New York, Texas and more.

political stripe can find to back up that lie. In fact, fraudulent voting in the United States is rare, isolated and insignificant.

Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, a Republican, said his reply would be: “They can go jump in the Gulf of Mexico, and Mississippi is a great state to launch from.” Hosemann said “Mississippi residents should celebrate Independence Day and our state’s right to protect the privacy of our citizens by conducting our own electoral processes.”

The commission is set up to push the new Jim Crow voting laws, which require picture ID, curtail early voting, cut back on voting booths, permit no Sunday voting, repeal automatic or motor-voter registration and more. Its posturing about voter fraud is the fraud. The real aim is to make it harder to vote, with impediments that disproportionately impact people of color.

The president’s commission is founded on a lie and perpetuates a fraud. The lie was Trump’s whopper that he would have won the popular vote if 3million to 5 million voters hadn’t voted fraudulently. There is no, literally no, evidence that anyone of any

In reality, voter suppression had a real and direct impact on the 2016 election -- a far greater impact than the handful of isolated incorrect or “fraudulent” votes cast, or the hacking allegedly masterminded by Vladimir Putin. The 2016 election was the first

The commission is perpetuating a fraud because it wants to use fears about voter fraud to suppress voting -- to make it harder to register and vote, particularly for working and poor people. The commission is run by its vice-chair, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. He is notorious for his crusade to push voter suppression laws, as well as to feed fears about illegal immigration.

without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act. Fourteen states -- including swing states like Wisconsin, Ohio and North Carolina -- had new voter restrictions in place. In Wisconsin, Trump won by 27,000 votes, but an unknown and likely quite large number of eligible voters lacked the newly required forms of ID. (A federal judge ruling in a lawsuit against the state’s voter ID law in 2014 put the number at 300,000.) Turnout in 2016 was the lowest in decades, particularly in Milwaukee, home of 70 percent of the state’s African-Americans. In North Carolina, even after a federal court overturned the state’s anti-voter measures for targeting African-Americans “with almost surgical precision,” Republican officials cut back hours and closed polling places. Early black voting turnout plummeted, according to the Nation, as the 40 counties with the largest African-American populations were allocated 158 fewer polling places. Voter suppression works. And so does voter empowerment. As the Nation also reported, Oregon enacted automatic voter registration, which added 250,000 new voters to the rolls. An impressive 79 percent of

registered voters turned out in 2016. We do not need a commission to investigate Donald Trump’s fantastical excuse for losing the popular vote. We need a commission to investigate the reality of voter suppression -- and how to make voting easier, not harder. That agenda would include automatic voter registration, longer early voting, an election day holiday, more polling places, hand-counted ballots to avoid cyber threats and more. Both Trump and the Republican Congress are more interested in raising barriers to voting than in lowering them. Democrats would be well advised to create their own independent commission, staffed with the best experts in the nation, to lay out a serious plan to end voter suppression and empower people to vote. Voting is the essential right in a democracy. It needs to be protected, not suppressed. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. In one clip, a Snapchat user appears to be updating his story when several gunshots go off. In the background, the beginnings of what sounds like a pretty chaotic scene are heard as Dolph ends his show performing his Yo Gotti diss, “Play Wit Yo Bitch.” In a second video, a fight breaks out shortly before the shooting occurs, and Dolph was already headed out of the venue when the first shots let off. For his part, it appears Dolph was undeterred by the shooting. According to tweets he posted later on that night, he went to an after party a short time after the concert and the shooting.

Majic 102.1 Kicked Off Summer with the First Summer Block Party By Kelsey Whittington, Feature Writer

ajic 102.1 hosted their first Summer Block Party at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and it was a night full of food, music, and excitement. The star studded lineup included Ro James, SWV, Brandy, DJ Kid Kapri, Jill Scott and BBD. Ro James kicked off the show with a performance that drew in the audience and really set the tone for the entire night. He performed his smash hit ‘Permission.’ The party was kept going with SWV who came out and made the crowd feel very nostalgic by performing some of their biggest hits. Fans could be singing such tunes as ‘Weak’ and ‘Right Here’ at the top of their lungs. The trio definitely proved they still had it and looked fierce as ever dressed in matching jumpsuits while doing it. “I love SWV! I am so glad they are still performing. They look and sound amazing

and this performance really took me back in time,” said Olivia Farley, a concertgoer and SWV fan. As if we weren’t feeling nostalgic enough, Brandy came out and proved to us Black really doesn’t crack! Dressed in a red flowy dress with her braids pulled in a high side ponytail, She showed her youthful side, wonderful ball of energy, and dedication as she put on an amazing show for fans. Brandy had the crowd on their feet the entire time. When she started ‘I Wanna Be Down’ the crowd went crazy! “Who doesn’t love Moesha? It was so great to see how great of a live performer she was,” said Tayler Harris, another concertgoer and Brandy fan. The Summer Block Party was the party that never was at lost for energy. DJ Kid Kapri made sure of that with mixes that made it feel like you were at your family reunion. It was evident the crowd was feeling it as they moved to the beats.

Brandy With excitement already at a ten, it was hard to believe it could get any higher. However, when BBD hit the stage, it did. BBD came and stole the show! Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe had everyone feeling like we were back in the 90s from their insane level of energy and not having aged one bit, it was truly an unforgettable performance. The trio performed crowd favorites such as ‘Poison’ and ‘Something in Your Eyes,’ and even songs from their New Edition days such as ‘Candy Girl’ and ‘Mr. Telephone Man,’ as well as songs from their new album Three Stripes. Even though it has been 20 years since BBD first stepped on the scene, everything was still intact from the vocals to the choreography and the fans were really impressed.

Ro James

Adding to the party atmosphere was a little love and romance. During BBD’s ‘Smile Again,’ Majic 102.1’s Johnathan Cook proposed to his girlfriend Sasha and everyone including Sasha’s heart melted. How many people can say they got engaged during a BBD concert? It was truly magical. The love fest continued with Jilly from Philly aka Jill Scott who serenaded us all with her angelic voice and her warm embrace as she performed. By the sound of the crowd it was clear that Jill is still a fan favorite. She kept the crowd engaged with

She showed her humor and even that she is a regular person by taking her shoes off mid performance to get more comfortable to give the best performance possible. Jill closed her show out with ‘My Petition,’ a song that she says she wrote as a letter to the government to try and make her voice heard. “I wrote this song in a form of a love song with the hopes that love will prevail,” said Jill. While singing the song a slideshow played in the background of pictures of the many victims of police brutality that we have all come to know as Eric Garner, Philando Castille, and others. Overall, I give the first Summer Block Party 5 stars. It was a great way to kick off summer and end African American Music Appreciation Month. It was a much needed event in the Black community to bring us together with music, culture, and food. That combination is always a great outlet. Lexus ES 300h is Tops in Fuel Efficiency

O

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

ne of the routine tasks of being a vehicle owner is the trip to the ever popular gas station. Whether your frequency is daily, weekly or another schedule, it will be significantly less as the owner of the 2017 Lexus ES 300h. With an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 40 mpg combined, it is at the top of its class for luxury sedans for fuel efficiency. The 2017 Lexus ES 300h is more than just fuel efficient but its stylist, safe, smart and for sale. Read more on why the 2017 Lexus ES 3000h could be the perfect hybrid for you.

One of the biggest benefits of a hybrid is its fuel efficiency. Gaining the maximum fuel efficiency is also a challenge to not comprise the power a vehicle produces. Lexus’ engineers have managed to solve this problem with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce 200 horsepower. The Lexus ES 300h has excellent fuel efficiency and average power. It is nowhere close to a snail pace but the pick up it is sufficient but not what one would call fast. It averages zero to 60mph in 7.8 seconds when the typical hybrid does it in 10.

A lot has changed with hybrids since they were first introduced to the public 117 years ago at the Paris Exposition of 1900. Although the goal of decreasing the amount of pollution in the air has not changed, the way two power sources come together to move a vehicle have. And few have done it better in the luxury car segment like Lexus.

The 2017 model of ES 300h does not change much as far as its exterior and interior. Optional safety features are apparent. A number of safety features already come standard on the ES such as antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear side airbags, side curtain airbags, front knee airbags, forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking, lane departure intervention,

Lexus ES 300h rearview camera, and Lexus Safety Connect with automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle location and an emergency assistance button. Optional features now available are front and rear parking sensors and a blindspot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert. I highly suggest acquiring all of the optional safety features as they are extremely useful. My favorite feature was the blind-spot warning system. Sometimes in driving your vision is not always clear completely around your vehicle, the blind-spot monitor is your extra set of eyes to keep you and others safe by making sure you always have clear passage. Speaking of being behind the wheel of the ES, it is like a dream to drive. The cabin is remarkably quiet but that is the beauty of a hybrid. I would literally turn the car on and off at least two most times when behind the wheel because it didn’t seem like the car had started since it was so quiet. Navigating the terrain was a smooth, comfortable drive for me. I love that had options when driving. If I felt a little sporty I could drive in the sports mood.

Leux ES 300h

If I was in the mood to save the Earth, there was eco mood. Lastly, just for the

everyday, there was normal mood. My body was positioned well in the 10-way powered driver’s seat with lumbar support and all controls were in arms length. However, controlling the infotainment system when not using the steering wheel controls may cause some difficulty. Buttons or knobs are not use to maneuver the system but rather a mouse-like control pad. It takes some getting use to before being very familiar and at ease with it. Connectivity is all over the vehicle with USB ports in the center console, 12v 120watt plug accessible in the backseat, and the Bluetooth connection – technology is a friend of Lexus. Since this was luxury sedan the finest of materials were used in creating the vehicle. From the wood and leather trimmed steering wheel to the analog clock trimmed in chrome on the infotainment system, Lexus had a laser focus when came to the little things. This entry level Lexus ES 300h has a based price of $41,820. However, my text vehicle had a few upgrades that took the price to $49, 769. Take the 2017 Lexus ES 300h for a spin at your local dealer and see everything I said is true.

Minority Lawmakers Unified in Call for Impeachment of POTUS By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

O

nly two Presidents of the United States have ever been impeached in history. And if democrats have their way Donald Trump will be the third. Ever since January 20th, Americans have been shocked, angered, applauded, confused, and gone through an array of emotions with Donald Trump at the helm of running our country.

Congressman Al Green, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and Congresswoman Sheil Jackson Lee

have already begun the research for if impeachment becomes a factor in the era of Donald Trump. Research indicates that typically the lower house of legislation impeaches the accused official while the upper house conducts the trial.

Auntie Maxine as Rep. Waters is affectionately called says Trump should be impeached for obstruction of justice if the FBI Russia investigation was a factor in his decision to fire Comey. She made her most recent cry for impeachment of Trump during this year’s Essence Festival rallying attendees to do whatever they could to impeach 45. “We can do this, you all, but we’ve got to stand up. I want you to rally.

Though two U.S. Presidents, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, have been impeached, neither were convicted of charges. before he got to the heart of his remarks. “ I do this because I believe in the great ideals that this country stands for liberty and justice for all - the notion that we should have a government of the people, by the people and for the people. I do it because, Mr. Speaker, there is a belief in this country that no one is above the law and that includes the President of the United States of America.” His 5 minute 26 second speech garnered national attention as well as numerous death threats. None of which made the Congressman grow silent. It just gave him fuel to be louder with his message. Fellow Texas Congressional leader Sheila Jackson Lee has made calls for the impeachment of POTUS on several different occasions. Her first claims for impeachment came when President Trump said that he had been wiretapped by former President Barack Obama. That proved to be

fake news. Congresswoman Lee again called for Trump to leave office after he attacked the intellect and appearance of the anchors from the Morning Joe show via Twitter. Congresswoman Lee commented via Facebook, “Well, let me tell you something Mr. President. I have gone through, as a member of the judiciary committee, impeachments but we can’t wait that long. It is time for you to resign. Enough is enough. I love America. I love these people and we need a commander-in-chief. “ Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas noted a different reason to impeach Trump. Earlier this year in an interview with BuzzFeedNews he cited Trump’s travel ban as a reason. CNN reported that Rep. Castro called for Congress to investigate “whether President Trump intentionally exceeded his constitutional authority” with his travel ban, saying that if Trump did, he should be impeached. Other lawmakers on the list to impeach 45 include:

Rep. Jared Huffman, Rep. John Yarmuth, Rep. Mark Pocan, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Rep. Keith Ellison, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán, Rep. Ted Lieu, Sen. Angus King, Rep. Ted Deutch, Rep. Frederica Wilson, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Stephen Lynch, Rep. Steve Cohen, Rep. Adriano Espaillat, Rep. Elijah Cummings, Rep. David Cicilline, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Jerry Nadler, and Rep. Yvette Clarke. Democrats are increasingly raising their voice for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. With each new presidential tweet or incident, the list for impeachment of Trump grows. Although there have been no Republicans to echo the call of Democrats, with the antics of the president some will probably be on board very soon. Majority support of the House of Representatives is needed for impeachment proceedings.

F

rom backyard barbecues and trips to the beach to baseball games and swim meets, summer is all about family fun. It’s also an ideal time to slow down and incorporate a more mindful routine at home. This season, prioritize a “less-is-more” lifestyle by making smart swaps, like using products with better ingredients, to simplify your life and create an even healthier home for your family. With these easy, helpful tips, you can arm yourself with the tools to spend more time focusing on family and fun.

whipped cream for dessert. Focus on the Right Ingredients. Warmer temperatures and fun, outdoor activities can lead to extra stains and more laundry. It’s important to keep summer items dirt-free and smelling fresh with products you can feel good about bringing into your home. For a powerful clean without harshness to keep your summer wardrobe clean and fresh, try all fresh clean Essentials, which is formulated without sulfates and contains effective ingredients for deep cleaning the toughest stains. Minimize Your Regimen. Take advantage of the seasonal climate to shorten your beauty routine and save time, energy and products. There’s no need to blow dry hair with warm weather – sleep in two twisted braids for beachy waves, air-dry after the shower or throw on a wide-brimmed sun hat to hide bed head. Also focus on products that do double duty: replace sticky lipsticks and gloss with tinted chapsticks that include SPF or mix in a drop of sunscreen to liquid foundation.

Pick Produce, Not Processed. What you feed your family often fuels summer fun, but favorite treats like ice cream and hot dogs can be full of unwanted ingredients and added sugars. Skip prepackaged items and look for fresh, seasonal produce that can be incorporated into multiple meals throughout the day, which can also lead to a shorter grocery list and less waste. For example, you can add nutrient- and antioxidant-rich stone fruit to Greek yogurt for breakfast, mix into salsa for Simplify Cleanup. It’s easy to let the a snack and throw on the grill then top with myriad rotating summer activities turn your

space into an unexpected mess, so proactively prepare for the chaos by creating a cleanup kit. A clean towel, water bottle, sunscreen, change of clothes and snack in a small tote or plastic container can be left in the trunk of the car or in the garage to keep you from running around searching for supplies.
