COMMENTARY

The Fraudulent ‘Voter Fraud’ Commission

T

By Jesse Jackson, National Writer

here’s a branch in philosophy called epistemology that deals with the theory of knowledge. How do we know what we know? How do we know what is true? What is believable? And what are the criteria we use to tell whether something is true or not? Considering his constant refrain of “fake news,” maybe President Donald Trump should enroll in such a course.

election process, have disputed his claim by affirming their voter registration rolls are sound, elections are fairly run and vote counts are accurate. As a result of his view, many believe the commission was established to “prove” that Trump is right, that he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by nearly 3 million votes because there were up to 5 million illegal votes cast for Clinton.

Why? Because he’s focusing on issues and creating entities that don’t correspond to real problems. Trump is guilty of not knowing the different between real problems and fake problems.

Second, look at actions. The commission’s first act was to send a letter to all 50 secretaries of state, plus the District of Columbia, requesting voter data on every American, including such sensitive personal information as home address, party affiliation, age, voting history, military status, criminal record (if any) and partial Social Security numbers. Most states refused to comply, objecting to sending it over nonsecure connections without the ability to protect it. Others had concerns about centralizing such information, and there was no clearly stated purpose of how the information would be used. Some feared the commission would use “crosscheck,” a system with a history of carelessly matching voters’ names between states and deleting one as a duplicate.

For example, consumer fraud is real, yet Trump is attempting to gut or eliminate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. By contrast, voter fraud is virtually nonexistent, according to all credible studies, but he has put together a so-called Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity to find it. How should we judge whether his voter fraud commission is legitimate or not? Using reason is a good way to start. First, consider motive. What’s the purpose of establishing the commission? Trump has argued that our state-based election systems are full of voter fraud. He believes it’s why he lost the popular vote. However, Republican and Democratic secretaries of state, those who oversee the

racially discriminatory ways. Third, look at the commission’s composition, its members’ histories and their orientation with respect to voting rights. Currently there are 10 members, six Republicans and four Democrats. Vice President Mike Pence is the chair and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is the co-chair. The commission’s members make up a rogues gallery and a dream team of voter suppression. Prior to becoming vice president, Mike Pence was Governor of Indiana and used “voter fraud” to support a statewide crackdown on registering African-Americans. Pence supported the 2005 Supreme Court decision that found an Indiana voter ID law constitutional. He supports Trump’s false claim that millions voted illegally. Kris Kobach is known as the “King of Voter Suppression,” a reputation he has earned by disenfranchising one in seven Kansans and by spreading his crosscheck system to states nationwide. Another Republican commission member, Ohio’s former Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, shortchanged African-American voting sites of an adequate number of voting machines, resulting in long lines. He also tried to disenfranchise voters by insisting that all voter registration forms be rejected if they were submitted on paper thinner than a postcard. He was the subject of 14 lawsuits

The Justice Department also sent a letter demanding to know how states were going to “clean up” their voting lists -- code for deleting voters, a practice used in the past in

regarding election irregularities. Republican commission member Hans von Spakovsky was a Justice Department official in the Civil Rights Division under President George W. Bush and strongly argued against reauthorizing the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Connie Lawson, Indiana’s secretary of state, is proud of having co-written her state’s voter ID law that spread nationwide, even though the law has since suffered federal judicial defeats in Texas and Wisconsin (2011), and in North Carolina and North Dakota (2013). Finally, while the commission’s goals have not been clearly stated, it seems obvious the real purpose of the commission is twofold: to validate Trump’s claim he would have won the popular vote in 2016 if not for illegal voters, and to lay the groundwork for nationalizing voter suppression legislation, making it more difficult for people of color, women, workers, young people, seniors and the disabled -- traditional Democratic constituencies -- to vote. Conclusion? The fraud commission is fraudulent! You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson.

POLITICAL Republicans Just Dodged Political Disaster On Health Care

enate Republicans won a relatively minor but important legislative victory on health care on Tuesday afternoon. But the lengths they had to go to secure it -- John McCain flying back from Arizona fewer than two weeks removed from surgery that led to a brain cancer diagnosis -- suggest the problems, political and policy-wise, that await congressional GOPers and the Trump White House.

Trump, again, as usual, went the public route. “Any senator who votes against starting debate is telling America that you are fine with the Obamacare nightmare, which is what it is,” he said on Monday.

Republicans woke up Tuesday morning faced with the possibility that, even with McCain’s return to Washington, they would not be able to secure the votes they needed to merely bring the health care bill to the floor and allow it to be debated.

In the usual legislative cycle, the “motion to proceed” -- which is what Republicans passed Tuesday -- is merely a formality. But, as with all things related to health care, it became a nail-biter as Vice President Mike Pence broke a 50-50 Senate tie to pass it. In clearing that hurdle, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell avoided a massive embarrassment and President Donald Trump

Donald Trump -- that convincing people to jump from the devil they know to the devil they don’t is the hardest thing to do in politics (and life). And, even if Republicans find a way through the political thicket surrounding this legislation -- or, more likely, push forward in spite of it -- they still have to figure out the legislative end of things.

Texas Officials Warn of Increase in Food-borne Illness [News4SanAntonio.com]

S

tate health officials are warning of an increase in Texas in the number of people who’ve contracted a food-borne illness often linked to imported produce. The Department of State Health Services says 68 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in the last month and officials are asking health care providers to pursue testing and report any additional cases. There are more than 250 different food-borne diseases, but cyclosporiasis is among the most common that are closely tracked by health agencies. It often spreads when human feces contaminated with the cyclospora parasite come into contact with water or produce. Those sickened can suffer from diarrhea, cramps, fatigue and vomiting. Health officials recommend thoroughly washing all produce, but cyclospora can be difficult to wash off. Cooking will kill the parasite.

Trae Tha Truth Brings Out Hot Celebs for Trae Day 10 Year Anniversary By Destany Rainey, Feature Writer

T

he hottest celebrities were at Houston’s Discovery Green Park on this past Saturday for a great cause hosted by Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth as he celebrated the 10 year anniversary of Trae Day. Families lined up early for a chance to see their favorite celebs and enjoy free entertainment sponsored by the entertainer. No child was deprived of a good time at Trae Day as there were several activities for them to enjoy such as playing with inflatable camels, horseback riding, rock climbing, sledding, bungee jumping, and getting close to animals at the petting zoo. ABC Dental added to the young crowd’s entertainment with face painting, and arts and crafts. Trae’s non-profit organization, Angel by Nature, along with the Houston Public Library joined together to give out 75 scholarships to students to pursue their higher education. Funds came via the library’s Hip-Hop for Literacy program. Students also received free school supplies to start them off in a good way this fall. AIDS Healthcare Foundation provided free on-site HIV testing, which several adults used at their convenience since results were available in only 1 minute. The Kyssi

The highlight of the evening was when Trae Tha Truth and his celebrity guests arrived on stage. Fans were surprised to see Nick Cannon, singer Mya, rapper Chamillionaire, rapper Dave East, Ceasar from Black Ink, comedian Tony Rock, comedian Affion Crockett, All Eyez On Me star Demetrius Shipp Jr., Simone Biles and many others talk about their support for Trae Day.

“Trae has a huge heart, so we just came out to show our support and to say thank you Trae for just being who you are,” Mayor Turner said. Energy increased at the event when O.T. Genasis, DJ Luke Nasty and DJ XO performed their popular songs “Push It,” “Might Be,” “I’m On the Way,” and “Off the Lot.” Even social media favorites Officer Norman, Hahadavis, and Teresa Topnotch showed up to support Trae.

Former Houston Community Outreach Director Kathryn Griffin Grinan said the idea of Trae Day came about that year after the rapper treated youth of the “No More Victims” program to a special dinner. It was

Bryson Tiller To Set It Off In Houston Words By Cecilia Smith and Photography by Rolexx

F

ame rarely comes overnight - a reality most artists are forced to accept early on - but for Kentucky native Bryson Tiller, failure has never been an option. Since debuting his infectious T R A P S O U L album in 2015, he’s been a busy man, ruling the airwaves with hits like “Don’t” and “Exchange.” Tiller’s comes a long way from his hometown of Louisville - no he’s not from Houston, he just recognizes great music and production when he hears it - but even an entry on Forbes Magazine’s famed “30 Under 30” list, a feature alongside Rihanna and a heavy cosign courtesy of “Insecure” hasn’t diminished his southern charm.

In short, he’s in it for the long haul. A sentiment producer and collaborator Boi-1da recently shared during a Rolling Stone interview, revealing “Bryson’s one of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with, period. Of his generation, he’s the guy, especially in R&B.” Not even the possibility of the dreaded “sophomore slump” was enough to deter Tiller, who admitted that spending the better part of 2016 on tour and the festival circuit - which can be brutal for new and established artists alike - served as an early lesson on remaining steadfast and humble.

It also taught him how to connect with live audiences in a more intimate and meaningful way, The 24-year-old “Wild Thoughts” artist isn’t showing any signs of slowing down either, thanks allowing him to get to know his growing fan base in part to the H.E.R. and Metro Boomin’ assisted during a period of growth he describes as “One “Set It Off” tour slated to run through 27 cities, thing is, I want to be more involved. I was new to including an August 8th stop at Houston’s NRG it at first, but I love when it’s just me and my fans.” Arena. While his success has launched him into the Speaking with Houston Style Magazine, Tiller national spotlight, off-stage Tiller has remained was both humble and relaxed during a recent largely private, a welcome change of pace in a discussion about his sophomore offering, True To digital age of overexposure and over sharing. When asked what life might look for him in the future, Tiller reveals “I would love to reach more people, either through my music, as a songwriter” or even through other avenues. But for now, he’s focused on an evolving sound, most recently seen on the 19-track True To Soul album, marking a slight departure from previous work. “I definitely thought about the sophomore slump. I didn’t want to feel like I was letting anyone down, letting my friends down. I didn’t know what people were expecting from me,” explained Tiller. In the end he’s learned to keep pushing. A perfectionist in his own right, though he hesitates to name any songs he would deem a “classic,” he reveals that cuts like “Self Made” and “No Longer Friends” are some of his favorite from the new album. But for now, he’s just enjoying his moment in the sun. According to Tiller, “I’ve learned not to take all of this for granted.” Put a face to the music by checking out the “Set It Off” tour trapsoul.com

Understanding the Serious Nature of Mini-Strokes By Family Features

K

nowing the warning signs of a mini-stroke could help save a life. A survey conducted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association shows one-third of United States adults have had symptoms consistent with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke, but only 3 percent called 911 for help. “Ignoring any stroke signs could be a deadly mistake,” said Mitch Elkind, M.D., chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee. “Only a formal medical diagnosis with brain imaging can determine whether you’re having a TIA or a stroke.” The survey showed 35 percent of respondents experienced at least one sign of a TIA or mini-stroke, such as sudden trouble speaking or a severe headache with no known cause. According to the online survey, those who suffered symptoms were more likely to wait it out, rest or take medicine rather than call 911. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability in

the United States and among the top five causes of death. However, with proper, timely medical attention, stroke is largely treatable. The faster you are treated, the more likely you are to have a positive outcome. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Medtronic, teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people remember the most common stroke warning signs and what to do in a stroke emergency: F – Face drooping A – Arm weakness S – Speech difficulty T – Time to call 911

American Stroke Association. Elkind said anyone who experiences a stroke warning sign that appears suddenly, whether it goes away or not, should call 911 immediately. This could improve the chances of an accurate diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

While the symptoms are the same, the difference between a TIA and a stroke is that the blockage is temporary, lasting between a few minutes and 24 hours. Going Camping: Houston Texans Open 2017 Training Camp in West Virginia By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer

he Houston Texans started training camp in unfamiliar territory. The franchise decided to hold the majority of their 2017 camp at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia and it will be the first time in franchise history (15 years) that training camp will be held outside the city of Houston. There will be a total of fifteen training camp practice sessions that the residents of White Sulphur Springs can attend to see the reigning 2016 AFC South Champions. The Aug. 15 – 16 sessions will be joint practices with the Super Bowl Champions New England Patriots. “This is a wonderful facility to be in. We’re thrilled to be here, excited to be here in West Virginia. There’s a little bit of a buzz around the building, I think, in anticipation of getting here. We’ve got to get settled. We’ve got meetings tonight, but we’re here for a reason. This is a business trip and we’ve got to get our football team – the goal of training camp doesn’t change because we changed environments,” said General Manager and Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Rick Smith.

history. The Texans are also one of two teams (New England Patriots) to win its division over the last two seasons. Four of the last six AFC South Championships have been won by Houston. One more AFC South Division title and the Texans will be the first team since the Indianapolis Colts to win three in a row. One of the biggest issues they face is off the field with key veteran OL Duane Brown in a holdout dispute with the franchise. Brown is the longest tenured player on the team and an All-Pro (2011, 2012) offensive lineman who has only been called for holding just seven times in 132 games. The starting left tackle played every snap from week 6-16 during the 2016 season, which was key for the offense as they dealt with multiple changes at the quarterback position. “Duane and I have a really good relationship. He is under contract for the next two years, so I really don’t see this as a holdout or contract dispute,” said Smith. The team has placed Brown on the Reserve/ Did Not Report list because he did not report to camp on the first day.

First round draft pick (12th overall) and 2017 NCAA National Champion Deshaun Watson (10, 168 yards passing and 90 passing TD’s – career) looks to compete against current starter Tom Savage. The 2014 fourth round quarterback was given the starting job in 2016 after replacing Brock Osweiler (Browns) in week 15. The Texans will have other tough decisions to make as camp goes forward, but Head Coach Bill O’Brien has a very positive outlook after the first day of camp. “I thought knowledge of assignments, effort, conditioning level for the first day I thought was decent,” said O’Brien. “Just being in a new place, knowing where to go, how the field were set up. Pellerin Crowned Miss Black Houston 2017

T

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

here is a new jewel in Houston’s crown and her name is Symone Pellerin. Crowned this past weekend on the campus of Texas Southern University, Pellerin is the first Miss Black Houston after the pageant took a more than ten year hiatus. Pellerin was one of eight women vying for the title of Miss Black Houston. All contestants competed in the traditional areas of pageantry including fitness and evening gown. As the new Miss Black Houston, Pellerin has adopted the platform of promoting selfworth and confidence; something she says is a major key for herself. With her platform “You Are Worth It,” Pellerin has no doubt that her voice and message will be clearly heard. In addition, she will be the Goodwill Ambassador for the Ronald McDonald House, American Heart Association and be an advocate for STEM education. She will also go on to compete for the state and possibly national title through the pageant’s national organization, Miss Black USA.

Being on the TSU campus was familiar territory for Pellerin as she is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree at the university. She also holds a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from the college. She also works at the school as a tour coordinator. Pellerin

regularly volunteers for Interfaith Ministries, Feed the Homeless, Meals On Wheels, and is a mentor for a women’s fitness challenge group. During the pageant, two other young ladies were crowned as Miss Black Teen Houston and Ms. Black Houston. Venisha Watts won the title of Ms. Black Houston 2017 in the division for ladies 24 and up while Christian Cargille was awarded the title of Miss Black Teen Houston in the division for teens 14-17. Other awards presented in each divisional category were Miss Photogenic, Evening Gown Winner, Fitness Winner, Miss Congeniality, People’s Choice and Spirit of Community Award.

Originally started in 1985 by C. David Pollard, the Miss Black Houston Pageant is currently operated by Operation Win, Inc., a 501 © 3 non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women to achieve their personal, professional and educational goals. Under the direction of Robertine Jefferson and her team, the pageant continues on providing contestants memorable experiences, network opportunities, and the chance to build positive relationships while showcasing their many talents. The bevy of past Houston beauties have gone on to accomplishment great fetes and be productive citizens in their respective communities.

BOOKS

“Called to Rise” by Dallas Police Chief (Ret.) David O. Brown (with Michelle Burford) By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

August 11 8:30 p.m.

Y

our life is entirely wrapped up in your job. You never aimed for that to happen, but it’s okay: what you do for a living has become your passion and therefore, you do it well. Life and work balance for you, but in the new book “Called to Rise” by David O. Brown (with Michelle Burford), you’ll see the balance tip. Little David Brown never wanted to be a police officer. Not at first. He really wanted to become a lawyer like on Perry Mason. Working in a courtroom, putting criminals away seemed like the best job ever and so, after Brown graduated from high school, he headed for the University of Texas at Austin to reach his dream. At the end of his sophomore year, though, that dream changed when crack cocaine came to his hometown of Dallas. He’d never seen such destruction, so he quit college in favor of a different method of putting “villains” away: Brown became a cop. It was a comfortable job that came easy for him. His rookie year was spent “enforcing the law in a place where I knew, or at least knew of, just about everybody.” He made friends on the force, and started working his way up the internal ladder. Meanwhile, over those years, he got divorced, lost his best friend to violence and his father to illness, raised a son, learned to lean on God for help, and met the love of his life. The Job, of course, was another love. Always yearning for more responsibility and better job positions, Brown leaped from

department to department, worked a regular beat, was in charge of 9-1-1 and dispatch, and served with the Dallas SWAT team. He learned first-hand that community policing worked like no other method of crime-fighting. He reached for the top. And then, just after he became one of the nation’s few African American Chiefs of Police, Brown was handed his biggest challenge ever… Aside from the fact that this book is overloaded to distraction with clichés and a bit too much chest-thumping, “Called to Rise” ain’t too bad. Readers who love true crime or memoirs of that sort will enjoy that author David O. Brown writes (with Michelle Burford) about his passion for law enforcement, how he formed his hard anti-drug stance while just a youth, and how it shaped the way he works. And yet, you’re asked to swallow a lot in those pages, and it sometimes feels like the righteousness is forced.

Later, that tone softens when Brown admits that his son’s death changed the way he perceived the people he was sworn to protect. He’s introspective there, with less foot-stomping, as he also weighs in on racial issues, and how police and citizens can come together for a “more thoughtful” discussion on that subject. Overall, “Called to Rise” is mostly good. It has moments of eye-rolling, but it’s also quite inspiring and yes, it’s worth reading. If you love police / detective memoirs, it’s a book to get wrapped up in.

Healthy hydration in the summertime starts when you rethink your drink so you can beat the heat. To get started, these tips from Sarah Ladden, M.S., R.D., nutrition, health and wellness director at Nestlé Waters North America, can help keep you hydrated all summer long. Pack for the heat.
