COMMENTARY
Donald Trump’s Dangerous Delusions On Police Brutality
D
By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
onald Trump often seems more shock jock than president. He likes to shock, say or tweet outrageous things, prove that he’s not just another politician. But now he is president; his words have impact, and his posturing can be dangerous. Last week, he essentially endorsed police brutality before a gathering of police officers in Long Island: “When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see them thrown in, rough, and I said, ‘Please don’t be too nice.’ “ His remarks received significant applause, but hours later the Suffolk County Police Department issued a statement making it clear that it “will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners.” The cries of Baltimore’s Freddy Gray, of Amadou Diallo, Manuel Loggins Jr., Ronald Madison, Kendra James, Sean Bell, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Alton Sterling and many more could be heard from their graves. Each was a black man or woman who died at the hands of police. Trump’s words are not simply bluster; his Attorney General Jeff Sessions is intent on turning them into policy. Sessions has
scorned the Obama administration’s efforts to review police misconduct and to forge consent agreements on reforms with police departments from Chicago to Baltimore. He spreads the myth that reform handicaps law enforcement. In a nation that locks up more of its people than any in the world, he’s instructed U.S. attorneys to seek the harshest penalties available for those found guilty of violating the law. Over the last decade, from Ferguson to Chicago to New York to Baltimore, our cities have witnessed major demonstrations and more in response to police brutality. Black Lives Matter demonstrations -- remarkable non-violent, civil disobedience -- put police reform on the national agenda. We began to see a bipartisan consensus emerging around sentencing reform, closing down privately owned for-profit prisons and reforming police practices from body cameras to community policing. This reform consensus was emerging because police brutality not only tramples individual rights; it also impedes community law enforcement. It breeds anger and cuts off community cooperation. Police become seen as occupiers, not allies. The poorest neighborhoods in our urban areas
are tinderboxes; too often, it is police brutality that sets them afire.
Its monitor, Peter Harvey, said that because reform helps police do their job.
The Obama administration’s 13-month review of Chicago’s police force was completed just before Trump was inaugurated. It praised the “diligent efforts and brave actions of countless” officers, and paid tribute to the tough task they have. Yet it found that “a break in trust” impeded the police force’s ability to prevent crime: “trust and effectiveness in combating violent crime are inextricably linked,” it concluded, calling for broad, fundamental reform of police in Chicago.
“Remember, it’s the community that helps you police,” Harvey said. “Very few cities have enough cops to patrol a city 24-7 effectively, 12 months a year. You need the community to help you.” And the community won’t help if you “place community residents in chokeholds where they die, and then turn around and say, ‘Well, we want to be your friend.’ Those are inconsistent messages.”
Trump and Sessions disagree. They think, as Trump put it, that the laws “totally protect the criminal, not the officers. ... (Officers are) in more jeopardy than (criminals) are. We’re changing those laws.” This displays an utter ignorance of the reality of police misconduct and its victims. It is also dangerous. It gives a green light to those who would trample basic rights and mocks those who follow the laws. It encourages departments to turn a blind eye to their own practices. In Newark, a consent decree reform agreement led to a dramatic reduction in crime.
Frustrated in Washington, Mr. Trump likes to rouse his base in speeches like that in Long Island. But these words are trouble, and his policies are worse. Across America, police reform is long overdue. What Trump and Sessions make clear is that, as long as they are in office, it will have to come from the bottom up, in the face of dangerous delusions at the top. You can write to the Rev. exas lawmakers are looking at new legislation that will prohibit state cities from partnering with private health organizations like Planned Parenthood and other affiliates of abortion providers. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner thinks passage of this legislation would cause a health crisis in Houston by affecting the way the city responds to such outbreaks as Zika, HIV or STDs. He noted Houston’s past successes in fighting such outbreaks because of the city’s available resources. Passage of the legislation would limit the number of partners to fight viruses and limit the city’s ability to address the health care needs of citizens.

Black Women Equal Pay
Black Women’s Equal Pay Day Provides Reflections Racial Inequality [Dailykos.com]
O
ne of the great contradictions of America is that inequality is still rampant—despite the widespread belief that hard work can overcome any barrier. Women, for example, are still paid less than men and the wage gap for women of color in the workforce is even greater than it is for white women. Monday marked Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which means it is the day in 2017 that black women would, in theory, have caught up to be paid the same amount of money that white men would have made in 2016. This is why it matters: In order for black women to earn as much as non-Hispanic white men earn in a year, they’d have to work 19 months.

Rod Carew Returns to Baseball Hall of Fame with New Heart
R
By American Heart Association News
od Carew walked down a ramp outside the Baseball Hall of Fame, the final legend leaving the building following a parade and reception. With each step, he heard clapping and the sentiments often sent his way these days.
this time had to be helped in and out of his parade vehicle, who spent the reception parked in a chair and left early because he was so uncomfortable, was now the last to leave – and strong enough to keep the party going.
“Looking good, Rod!” screamed one of the roughly 40 fans still clustered behind a barricade across the street almost three hours after the parade.“So glad you’re doing well!” shouted another.
“You guys are always cheering for me,” he told the fans, “so this is the least I can do.”Carew entered the Hall of Fame in 1991. He returns most years to welcome the newest inductees into baseball’s most revered fraternity.
Seven months removed from receiving a new heart and kidney, Carew was wrapping up a long day that would’ve worn out anyone. It would’ve been understandable if he’d waved to the crowd, climbed into the waiting SUV and driven off. Instead, Carew headed across the street. He strolled along the railing, bumping fists, posing for pictures and exchanging small talk. Over a weekend filled with moments that underscored how far he’s come in his fight against heart disease, this was the most profound. The guy who last year at
Last year’s visit came months after a nearly fatal heart attack and cardiac arrest led to a device being implanted in his chest to keep him alive, a machine called a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD. Simply being here was meaningful. But it was a struggle. Exhaustion, he thought. The cause turned out to be bleeding in his brain, a setback that jeopardized his quest to get a new heart – or worse. When he got the transplant in December, Carew knew he couldn’t travel for at
least six months. Luckily, Hall of Fame weekend was seven months away.
dren and their paths crossed at least once when Reuland was 11.
Carew has been pushing himself in rehab for two hours three days a week. Since his six-month checkup, he’s already flown to Minneapolis to be honored at a Twins game and to Miami to be honored at the All-Star Game.
The compelling ties that bind this story continue generating attention, widening the reach of Heart of 29. A news conference Saturday morning provided another opportunity.
Everywhere he goes, Carew spreads the word about heart health. That’s the mission of Heart of 29, the campaign with the American Heart Association that he and his wife, Rhonda, launched shortly after his ordeal began in September 2015. The campaign took its name from the jersey number Carew wore throughout his career. It now has added meaning: His organ donor, Konrad Reuland, was 29 when he died following a ruptured brain aneurysm. Power Up with Tommy, Julio, Dre and AT&T Words By Jo-Carolyn Goode and TotallyRandie
A
T&T has become known as the brand to mobilize your world. But this past weekend in Houston AT&T brought the power to our world in the form of Joseph Sikora, J.R. Ramirez, and Rotimi Akinosho. The cast of the highly rated #1 program on Starz “Power” was in town for an exclusive meet and greet with fans of the show. And of course, Houston Style Magazine was there to learn a little more about the guys and now you will too. “Power” follows the double life living James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick). On one hand he appears to be living the life of a successful business owner of one of the hottest nightclubs in town, and doting husband/father pristine with his stunning wife Tasha (Naturi Naughton) by his side. However, flip the coin and he lands on heads as a drug lord running a well run operation in the streets of New York with his best friend who is like a “brother”, Tommy. As the protagonist, St. Patrick exudes the most common conflict known “man against man”. He struggles with wanting to leave the drug world where his family and himself along with his loyal associates face death from multiple gangs every day. Sprinkle that with trying to raise your 3 kids, and a pinch of infidelity with 10 10

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Brings ‘Detroit’ to Houston
S
By Lisa Valadez
helia Jackson Lee knew the importance of ‘Detroit’. So much so that when the film regarding the 1967 killing of three African-American men during the 12th Street Riot began screening across the country, she secured the only Texas-based screening and decided upon Houston to show it. It occurred only moments after a lengthy panel discussion in regards to community-based policing and reforms in criminal justice and the bail system.
Joining Jackson Lee were Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis, HPD Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner, and Reverend Dr. Marcus Cosby of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.
result closely mirroring the Justice System as we know it. Bigelow’s prior films such as the Academy Award winner ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ should have prepared viewers for ‘Detroit.’ While those films centered around the Iraq War and the capture of Osama Bin Laden, one underscored a tone of fatalism and the other heroic revenge. ‘Detroit’ only bows to the whims and powers of racism and the horrors it can cast upon people who are powerless to stop it. Understanding how Michigan’s most populated city descended into chaos is woven into the larger narrative of the fiery ‘60s and through plenty of brutality and forms of discrimination, all things swell at the Algiers.
The need for community-based policing came with ‘Detroit’ as the perfect tie-in. A visceral, almost anxiety inducing film, Kathryn Bigelow’s retelling of the incident in which three African-American men were killed at a hotel by Detroit police officers and Michigan State guardsmen feels almost directly similar to the stories of unarmed men and women of color being killed by the police in modern times. Similar to those incidents, the subsequent murder trials of the officers involved in the 1967 case found a
Not knowing about the Algiers Motel incident feels like another reminder of history in regards to black men and the police. It is at times a torturous, agonizing, maddening and important film only because its subject matter feels like a giant reminder. Many of the black men at the Algiers attempt to diffuse the situation yet are tossed into a threatening situation by racist, prejudiced officers. It becomes less about changing a situation for the better and more about surviving the night. It is the latest film to shed
a light on institutionalized racism. Setting it in comparison to the tumultuous 1960s only sheds a larger light about a problem that has persisted through American history, in particular for men and women of color. During the panel, Jackson Lee echoed the sentiments of those who’ve seen the film and feel that the horrors persist today. “Five decades have passed since the horrific events graphically depicted in ‘Detroit’, yet our criminal justice system is still grappling with some of the same issues regarding its treatment of minorities,” she said. “We must continue the conversation and work toward building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.” Choosing a film such as ‘Detroit’ to project this message is a calculated move. An ensemble cast, the film’s black leads are all relatively fresh, new faces from ‘Star Wars’’ John Boyega who plays a security guard caught in the middle of the madness to Jason Mitchell from ‘Straight Outta Compton.’ Mitchell as Carl Cooper rents out the room where Fred (Jacob Lattimore) and Larry (Algee Smith)
flirt with two white women after they strike out following a performance at a nearby theater. Down the hall from the party room is Greene (Anthony Mackie), a soldier who has just returned from Vietnam. Three of the men involved in the Algiers Motel incident were shot to death, nine other people were terrorized and beaten after police arrived at the scene responding to calls of sniper fire at the motel. What ‘Detroit’ ultimately accomplishes is not shedding a light on one of the more disturbing cases of police violence in the 1960s. Rather, its goal revolves around crafting a two-hour continuing reel of a nightmare that seems to play out every day on social media and in the news. There is a “us” versus “them” establishment created with the “us” being officers who seek loyalty from all regardless of being brutal, callous and cruel. The “them” is aimed towards the black people who they torment along with two white women in the film, utilizing one clear fact. Regardless of what interpretation of the Algiers incident you choose to believe, racism still sits at every intersection of the American story.

EAT WITH STYLE Eight Houston Area Finalists Vie to Be Named a H-E-B’s Primo Pick Product
P
repare your taste buds for some new, interesting flavorful combinations that will hit H-E-B stores in the future thanks to their annual competition, H-E-B Primo Picks Quest for Texas Best. Now in its fourth year, the statewide competition is the signature program for the grocer that allows food entrepreneurs to compete for a chance to have their products on H-E-B store shelves. To date, the competition has yield more than 200 new products for H-E-B. “Quest for Texas Best is an extraordinary opportunity for Texans to feature their products on H-E-B store shelves, and for all to explore and enjoy locally sourced products,” said James Harris, H-E-B Director of Diversity & Inclusion and Supplier Diversity. “After all, Texas is home to smart, inventive food entrepreneurs and it’s an honor to be on the forefront of their journey to success.” Over 500 budding entrepreneurs from across Texas applied. That field was narrowed down to the top 25 finalists. Out of that 25, eight are from the Houston area. Houston Style Magazine was among the media groups that got an exclusive first taste from Houston’s eight at a private meet and eat at H-E-B San Felipe before the next round of judging. Meet Houston’s Eight *Norka and Walter Nimocks are making juicing refreshing again. Not only are their juices good for you they are good to you. communities. Juice flavors are Turmeric Temptation, Dandelion, Delight, Berry Bliss, and Kale Karma. My personal favorite is Turmeric Temptation. Chilesquiles Foods are making your favorite Mexican entrees better when they are topped off with one of their sauces. Octavio Orozco said the idea behind the product is for home chefs to spend less time in the kitchen and more time with family enjoying the food. There are a couple of sauces in the line and all are good. Cheezinos is putting a new spin on the traditional cheese ball. These gluten free cheese balls just need to be popped in the oven for a few minutes before devouring them bite by delicious bite. My favorite flavor is cheezino with raspberry jam. Because they are small and bite sizes, you can grab a couple and take them with you wherever. D’Gusto is trying to make their popular empanadas go from their restaurant tables to H-E-B store shelves. For years people have enjoyed D’Gusto empanadas at Mi Pueblito Restaurant and the Texas school systems. The respond was so highly favorable they decided to take the product further. I tried one of chicken empanadas and it was fiya. I am always looking for a good snack and Brad and Hannah Montgomery have that snack. Through their company, Couple of Cooks Snacks, they took their tradition Christmas gifts to family and friends and turned it into a family business. The hand crafted snacks come in a variety of flavors. My personal favorites are Chipotle-Chocolate Crunch and the Original Crack Mix. These snacks are highly addictive.

Supporting War Pig BBQ is a good thing in more ways than one. First off the name of his sauce just makes you smile, F.U.B.A.R. (For Use on Butts and Rib). But the taste will have you coming back for more. I had three samples at the media tasting myself. The company is owned and operated by U.S. Army veterans and some of the proceeds benefit those in the service. Lone Star Bee Company uses Texas honeybee to make sweet infused honeys. Mark Crippen and Nicki Praiswater created two unique honeys – Fiery Sweet Mesquite and Lucky Lime & Sea Salt Clover. I was a little leery at first about the flavors but they work. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the flavors blended and tasted. It was excellent. High school sweethearts Nathan and Christi Wade own Lazy Bee Honey Co. They make sweet products without corn syr-
up, food colors or chemical preservatives. Their products come in flavors of Cinnamon Pecan Honey Butter, Honey Peanut Butter and Cinnamon Honey. I tried the Cinnamon Pecan Honey Butter on a croissant. It was heaven. Final judging will take place later this month in Austin, TX where the top 25 will present their culinary creations to a panel of judges who will evaluate the products on their quality, marketability, and product readiness. The grand prize winner will receive $25,000 and have the bagging rights to be called Texas Best Primo Pick. First place will receive $20,000, with $15,000 awarded for second place, and $10,000 for third place. Each winner will also receive placement on H-E-B store shelves and be named an H-E-B Primo Picks product.

SPORTS
Home Is Where The Heart Is Houston Astros Open Seven-game Homestand By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer
A
lthough the Astros own the best road record in the Major Leagues at 38-15 and are averaging 6.89 runs per game on the road, they could not have been happier to return to Houston for the upcoming seven game homestand. Coming off a brutal nine game road trip (5-4), the Astros needed to be back in familiar territory to re-evaluate some late season issues that may cause some trouble as they make a run for the 2017 World Series. The injury bug seemed to bite the Astros once again. During the Philadelphia Phillies series, Houston lost 2017 All- Star OF starter George Springer for at least 10 days as he went down with a quad injury. He is expected to return this Friday (Aug. 4th), but the Astros may keep him out longer for precautionary measures. Especially since they called up the smoking hot rookie Derek Fisher who is batting .295 with 3 HR and 8 RBI this season in replacement duty. Superstar SS Carlos Correa is still on the injured list with a month away from returning to the lineup. The team also added starting pitcher Lance McCullers to the DL with a sore back. This is the second time in the last
two months he has experienced this type of injury. Pitching has been the Achilles heel for the Astros this year, but Houston has help on the way in 2017 Cy-Young Candidate P Dallas Keuchel (9-0). He is scheduled to start in Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Keuchel has an active 11 game winning streak dating back to his final two starts in 2016, which is one shy of the franchise record. This is exactly what the Astros need to get back to being the dominant team they are. Especially with the moves made by the NY Yankees who acquired P Sonny Gray from the Oakland A’s and the Los Angeles Dodgers who picked up P Yu Darvish. Houston did some trading as well by acquiring LHP Francisco Liriano from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for OF Norichika Aoki and OF Teoscar Hernandez. Stop me if you have heard this before. Astros 2B Jose Altuve is the best player in baseball right now. And no this isn’t up for debate. Along with IF Yuli Gurriel, Altuve lead Houston to the best batting average (.323) and OPS (.948) in Major league history for the month of July. Take Gurriel out of the equation and
Astros Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel you will see why I made the previous statement about Jose being the best player in today’s game. In July, Altuve lead the AL in batting, OPS, Slugging pct., and OBP. This was the best statistics for that month since 2006 (Braves Chipper Jones). He also had a 19-game hitting streak from July 2 – 28, and posted 43 hits in that same time frame. Is there any need to continue? Ok. One more. The All-Star 2B leads all MLB in batting at (.367) and hits (147). I could go all day
making the case for him being AL MVP, but I will stop right there. If Houston can come out of this homestand with a 5-2 record and stay healthy, they should have no problems making a deep run in the playoffs. As I have mentioned before, they have a very potent offense that needs the pitching to return to the dangerous arms that frightened MLB at the beginning of the year.
The Big 3 Visits the Big D! By Natasha Granberry, Sports Writer

rowing more and more in popularity, the Big 3 is basketball’s first fourpoint shot in 3-on-3 matchups. The winning team is the first to score 60 points according to the Big3 website. The games highlight the biggest basketball superstars at their highest level of play. Games are played every Sunday in a different city, in a quadruple header at the same venue. When the Big 3 came to the Big D I was ready and so were the rest of the fans. They say everything is bigger in Texas and fans showed The Big 3 just how true that was for Texans. Fans stood in line up to two hours before tip off with anticipation of the excitement of the Big 3 coming to their city. Once the doors finally opened, the fans flooded the arena in different directions to grab Big 3 merchandise, eye their seats and look at their favorite players warm up before the game.
the team’s final score 50-40 in favor of the Killer 3s. The 3-headed monsters led by Houston native Rashad Lewis put on a great show in his home state Sunday. Another close game between Tri-state and 3-headed monsters went back and forth with over 6 lead changes during just the first half of the game. However, Big3 Coach Gary Peyton must have wanted to clinch his playoff spot as his team went on 10-4 sealing the win with free throws by Lewis. Sharpshooter Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf also contributed greatly for the win. Trilogy’s co-captain and Dallas native Kenyon Martin made his hometown showing with a win and special presentation by the city of Dallas. The first half of the game was pretty evenly scored. By halftime this game was shaping up to be a great battle with the score being 25-20. Things became interesting in the second half when the game score was 33-30 but after an 18-6 run by Trilogy the win was sealed with a 3-point shot. Ghost Ballers Captain Michael Bibby finished with 16 points but he will need more if these two teams meet in the playoffs. Trilogy is the only undefeated team and guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Trilogy co-caption and Dallas native Kenyon Martin even received a surprise accommodation from the city.
The Killer 3s were a sight to see from court introductions to the final shot that sealed the game. It was awesome to see Player Captain Chauncey Billups after his two game absence return and remind the fans why he is Mr. Big Shot. His four-point shot gave his team their first lead of the game. Stephen “Stak” Jackson and Charles Oakley gave the fans a little excitement with their on-court dispute. However, both stated in the press conference their mutual respect for one another and love of wanting to get the win. Stak made it clear he was trying to get back into the NBA. His performance on Sunday showed that his words match The first noticeable issue when this his actions. Big 3 it turned out it was very entertaining as both teams played hard. The Power crew just didn’t have enough power to hold off 3’s Company even though they went on a 6-point run. The infamous Big 3 win by two-rule ended up deciding the game when Andre Owens sealed the game with a 3-point shot. Owens had three 3 pointers to finish the game with 25 points. In a tough loss Power did finish with 3 players in double figures. The Big 3 may have been about basketball but the fans seemed to be the focus. Becoming more popular with the fans is Big3’s infamous Drain the 4, which is a 4-point shot from a certain marker on the court. Players are not the only ones in the action of draining the 4 as selected fans were given a chance at landing the 4-point shot.
Although the excitement and energy was high on the court, it took a dive after a promised failed. Fans were promised the opportunity to meet and greet with players if they purchased a certain amount of merchandise. However, no one told the players about the meet and greet so the interaction didn’t happen. Hopefully, this will get worked out for the remainder of the season. The Big 3 is truly a great summer family funday event for parents to share their love and memory of the game while the kids become fans of players they didn’t have the pleasure of watching earlier in their careers. The Big 3 has a few more stops before the finals in Las Vegas and The Gransberry highly recommends you making it out to the games for your chance to drain the 4.

“Popular: The Power of Likability in a StatusObsessed World” by Mitch Prinstein By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

one of the other kids like you. They don’t include you in anything; in fact, they often just plain ignore you, and some even pick on you. You don’t understand why this is, but there isn’t much you can do: quitting your job is not an option. In “Popular” by Mitch Prinstein, you’ll see why being Top Dog matters, after all these years. Who remembers recess? You do, of course; you ran wild, swung, jumped, and screamed yourself hoarse in every one of them. And then – wham! – came teenagerhood, where you, Mean Girls, jocks, bullies, and the desperate stopped playing. Instead, you had two options: you clawed your way popular, or you stood by watching others do it. It kinda sounds like your workplace, doesn’t it? Why is popularity still so important? Says Prinstein, there’s “more than one type of popularity,” and there’s a difference between popularity and likeability. Popular people have status but are often loathed. Likeable people are, well, likeable. Surprisingly, where you sat on the spectrum in your youth still affects your adult decisions, relationships, family, even your income. According to researchers, most children fall into one of four categories: Accepted (the kids most kids like); Neglected (children that are basically ignored); Rejected (those actively avoided); and Controversial (a category of extreme like-dislike). Kids know instantly who’s popular and who’s not, they know where others lie within the categories, and they’ll sort one another out in short order. Adults aren’t much different. We all know somebody at work who fits
in each of those categories, and you may even have an inkling about where you fit. We need to be liked – it’s a matter of evolution – but can popularity be a problem? Yes: some people will go too far for status, to the point of violence and bullying. Others may be allowed too much status and power (as in the case of celebrities). Popularity can also be negatively addicting because we believe it might make us happy. It won’t. But one thing’s for sure: “following the example of likable people might just change our lives.” Oh, how “Popular” is going to make you squirm. Whether you were cheerleader, class leader, or the Last Kid Picked, reading it will whisk you back to high school with all its attendant issues and feelings. Wiggle, squirm, wiggle. And maybe that’s the point: author Mitch Prinstein makes us want to look inward to explain why we’re always invited for Happy Hour (or not), and why co-workers cheer or groan at certain names on team projects. The squirm comes, maybe, from embarrassment or chagrin, and the realization that “We never really left high school at all” still bothers us. Fortunately, there are things we can do to change our likeability, and to begin to atone for any meanness.
