COMMENTARY R

America In the Mirror of Charlottesville By Jesse Jackson, National Writer

acism, exposed once more in the terror visited on Charlottesville, Va., still scars America. Hundreds of neo-Nazis, white supremacists, klansmen and other fervid racists gathered -- some armed with assault rifles, wearing camouflage. They marched with lit torches, yelling Nazi slogans, looking for trouble. They provoked the violence, terrorized a city, and took the life of Heather Heyer and injured many more. In the reaction to those horrors, character is revealed. For Heather Heyer, the neo-Nazi assault revealed her passion for justice. She died standing for what she believed in, and her sacrifice helps to redeem an America that is far better than the haters. She joined a peaceful demonstration against the neo-Nazis, standing with African-Americans and people of conscience unwilling to be intimidated by the mob. She was crossing an intersection when a 20-year-old man plowed his car into the peaceful demonstrators and took her life, injuring 19 others. She now joins the blessed martyrs of America’s long struggle for equal rights. She stands with other angels who sacrificed their lives: Viola Liuzzo in Selma, Ala. in 1965; James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner near Philadelphia, Miss. in 1964; the four little girls -- Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robinson and Denise McNair -- blown up in the Birmingham, Ala. church bombing in 1963.

As Heyer’s mother stated, “Heather’s life was about -- passionately about -fairness and equality and caring, and that’s what we want people to take away from this.”Donald Trump’s reaction to Charlottesville will be etched in infamy. He refused to condemn the neo-Nazis and white nationalists, choosing only to decry the “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.” The haters heard his message. The Daily Stormer, a white supremacist website, exulted that Trump “did not attack us. ... No condemnation at all.” His campaign for the presidency purposefully stoked the forces of bigotry and intolerance. Now, as president, he has failed a test of simple decency. He shames a nation that is far better than that. Some Republicans showed they know better. Conservative Sen. Orrin Hatch tweeted simply, “My brother didn’t give his life fighting Hitler for Nazi ideas to go unchallenged here at home.” Senator Marco Rubio spoke forcefully against the haters. Some Republicans even rebuked the president for his failure. Decrying racism is necessary. Words are important, but actions are needed. Dr. King always warned against being satisfied with words: “Loose and easy language about equality, resonant resolutions about brotherhood fall pleasantly on the ear, but for the Negro, there is a credibility gap he cannot overlook. He remembers that with each modest advance the white pop-

ulation promptly raises the argument that the Negro has come far enough. Each step forward accents an ever-present tendency to backlash.” The terrible church bombing in Birmingham was denounced, but King pushed us to keep our eyes on the demand for civil rights reform. The hoses and clubs of Selma were decried, but King kept his focus on pushing for the Voting Rights Act. Denouncing hatred is important, but we need to focus on who is prepared to act. We applaud Republicans who, unlike Trump, call out the neo-Nazis and the Klansmen. But the measure of their sincerity is how they act. The Trump Department of Justice, under former Alabama Sen. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, has moved consistently to reverse and weaken civil rights. He’s turned away from reforming discriminatory practices of police departments, even as Trump has celebrated police brutality. He’s turned civil rights laws on their head, gearing up to investigate university affirmative action programs that allegedly discriminate against whites. He’s backed off enforcement of the Voting Rights Act, which he has called “intrusive,” opening the door to more efforts to suppress the vote. Trump has pushed for a selective ban on Muslim travelers to the U.S., and he continues to prey on immigrants and posture on his “wall.” The Republican Congress, with

its push to strip millions of health insurance to pay for tax breaks for millionaires, and its budget plans to cut top-end taxes while gutting funding for education and for food and housing programs that support the most vulnerable, only adds to our entrenched injustice. The Republicans’ actions speak much louder than their words. America has come a long way from the horrors of slavery and segregation. We are a better people and a better country for that struggle. Yet, as Charlottesville revealed once more, hatred and racism still fester. Unprincipled politicians can still play on race and intolerance for their own purposes. Violent hate groups are literally on the march. These must be denounced, even as we celebrate Heather Heyer and the forces of conscience. We must also act. A good response to Charlottesville would be a massive voting coalition to drive out the forces of division and push for a new era of reform. We must act, change the institutionalization of bias, protect and extend the right to vote, and fight to ensure equal justice and opportunity for all. You can write to the Rev. Sports Fan Starts A Petition to Ban Bun B From Rooting for All Teams [Blavity.com]

petition calls for rapper Bun B to be banned from all Houston sports teams’ events because the super fan who made the petition places blame for the teams’ losses on Bun B. According to the Change.org petition, fan Dontralle Brown Reed says that Bun B’s support is bad for Houston sports. Reed also questions Bun B’s “loyalty” to the teams he reps. “We have lost players, prime time games and shots at championships every time he’s involved from appearances to his songs. The fans are growing tired and this has been going on the past five years. He only comes around when we are winning, so it’s only right to ban him from the teams. He is a bandwagon for his image,” the petition read. The rapper made a song for the 2015 Astros called “Crush City” after they made it to the playoffs.

Mayor Turner Requests Study of Confederacy Statues [StyleMagazine.com Newswire]

M

ayor Sylvester Turner has asked top staff members to study whether statues related to the Confederacy should be removed from city property. The mayor commented about the statues Tuesday at a City Council meeting after members of the public urged the city to remove the statues from its public spaces because, they said, the statues honor slavery and racism. Staff members will compile an inventory of the statues and “provide me with recommendations about what steps we need to take,” the mayor said. “It is my hope that we can, in a very positive and constructive way, move forward,” Mayor Turner added. No date has been set for action on the issue.

COMMENTARY Ignoring Hate Is the Same As Walking Alongside It By Demez White, Feature Writer

H

atred never went away, it was simply lurking. Waiting on someone to open the door. On Saturday night, we got a glimpse into what was hiding behind the door in Charlottesville, Virginia. On Tuesday, Donald Trump kicked the door wide open. There’s one aspect of this entire conversation that’s bothering me, it’s the premise that most Americans are against racism and these Nazi’s and KKK members are a small portion of society. Is our attention span as a society so short that we forget what was happening at Donald Trump’s “Make American Great Again” rallies? Are we forgetting that something like 70-80% of white men voted for this man? A large percentage of white women voted for him also. I was willing to not call these individuals racists when they voted for him, primarily because a lot of people in our country were tired of the same politicians. Donald Trump represented something

new and different. In November of 2016, I was willing to give my fellow Americans the benefit of the doubt; I’m no longer willing to do that. We as a society now have a track record of who and what Donald Trump is and if you can still support him, you’re a racist and more than that you’re a fool. I’ll even take this a step further. If you’re sitting back and not saying anything, you’re just as guilty as those men and women that were marching by torchlight this past weekend. Why am I as a black man still writing think pieces on what other black people should do? We protest and people are offended. We physically fight back and people claim defending ourselves is violence. We decide to get educations and start businesses because companies don’t want to pay us our worth and the same people that have been privileged their entire life complain about minority contracts and affirmative

action. Racism in America is not a Black problem or a Hispanic problem or an Asian problem; it’s a White problem. Go to your favorite comment section under an article about the KKK or the Alt- Right (Isn’t is amazing that we gave them a name that means Nazi’s but doesn’t sound as bad) and you will find people not only defending these people, but saying profound things like, “It’s okay when Black Lives Matter protest and kill police, but when white people decide to stand up for their rights it’s a problem.” No matter

how many times you tell a person of hate that BLM has never been about segregation or killing police or stopping white men and women from being productive citizens; they will argue you until their fingers start to bleed from their angry comments on Facebook. That’s what we’re fighting as a country. The men and women that try and justify it or ignore it way more than we’re fighting the fools dumb enough to show their racism out in the open.

Obama’s Tweet In Response to Charlottesville Attack Is One of The Biggest Tweets Ever By Hunter Schwarz, CNN/StyleMagazine.com

Barack Obama ormer President Barack Obama’s tweet reacting to the attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, is one of the biggest ever on the social network.Obama tweeted a quote from Nelson Mandela’s 1994 autobiography “Long Walk to Freedom” Saturday that said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

care facility next to his daughter Sasha’s school in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2011. The tweet has been liked more than 2.5 million times, making it the second-most liked tweet of all time, behind a tweet from Ariana Grande following the attack at her concert in Manchester in May, a Twitter spokesperson confirmed to CNN. Obama’s tweet is also now the fifth-most retweeted tweet behind a tweet from a teen who wanted free chicken nuggets from Wendy’s, Ellen Degeneres’ tweet from 2014 Oscars, a tweet from singer Louis Tomlinson to his One Direction bandmate Harry Styles and Ariana Grande’s previously mentioned tweet.

FEATURE HBRW: Serving Up Black Businesses as the Main Dish

Incredible Things Are Happening In HISD By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

I am proud to report that HISD continues to make academic progress district wide,” said a pleased Houston ISD Superintendent Richard A. Carranza as he bragged on the district that has been under his administration for the last 12 months. The Texas Education Agency (TEA), a branch of the state government responsible for overseeing public education, recently released their accountability ratings for school campuses for the 2016-2017 school year and Houston ISD scored well. In fact, Houston ISD had its highest ratings in the last five years with 90% of all campuses meeting on exceeding the state’s minimum requirements. This is significant since TEA’s revamped the accountability system with a stricter, rising bar scale. In their evaluation of Houston ISD, TEA looked at the success rate of students on the STAAR test, students’ progress with each grade level, closing performance gaps, and postsecondary readiness. Carranza was most proud of the 18 schools that improved to the point that they were no longer on the “improvement requirement” list, but were now on the “met standard” list, many of which that had the IR designation for several years. During the district recent press conference, Kashmere Gardens Elementary School principal Reginald Bush said he was able to turn things around at his school with his team by focusing on three fundamental principles – believing in children, eliminating every excuse, and staying laser focused. Health Check Ups for Kids Before Heading Back-to-School

S

chool supplies, checked. New clothes and shoes, checked. But have your checked your child’s health? Sure, you may have gotten the immunizations and the routine physical. Cheers for that. What about that dental check and eye exam? Houston Style Magazine spoke with some top docs about the necessary exams and preventative measures parents can take to ensure their child has a successful and healthy school year.

General Health Each state has their own list of required vaccinations for school age children that is determined by the state legislature and enforced by the Texas Department of State Health Services with the Texas Education Agency. Currently, Texas requires students to have seven vaccinations which include Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis; Polio; Measles, Mumps, and Rubella; Hepatitis B; Varicella; Meningococcal; and Hepatitis A. Beyond these vaccinations, how else can you protect your child’s health? Dr. Amber Johnson Robinett, pediatrician at Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates, tells us more ways to keep your child healthy. One of the most important preventative measures against viruses and illnesses is to build up your child’s immune system. Vaccines do that. “We give vaccines to build the immune system but then just over the years being around sick kids that also builds up their immune system by forming the antibodies to various illnesses. “ However, there are still some things parents can do to help with their child’s overall health. It’s the things that we have heard a million times and know but have a hard time putting into practice. Dr. Robinett stressed the importance for parents to make sure their child is drinking lots of water, eating well-balanced meals, taking vitamins, and living an overall healthy lifestyle for optimal health. Another tip Dr. Robinett dropped is to teach your child basic hygiene like good hand washing and coughing into their elbow. Coughing on one another and touching surfaces of someone who is sick are the main reason kids have to come see Dr. Robinett. She said her office is flooded with sick kids at the beginning of the school year suffering from a virus or strep throat due to lack of following the hygiene basics. So, parents get your child vaccinated, loaded them up with vitamins and good food, and teach them to wash their hands often.

Eye Health A child should have a health check up annually from the age of three on up. In addition to that medical check, their eyes should be checked on the same scale.

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

“Usually every year is what we suggest but some people depending on insurance can’t come in every year. But for a child, especially one who actually wears a pair of glasses or found the need for some sort of prescription, every year is pretty important,” said Dr. Roosevelt Gloyd, optometrist at the Berkeley Eye Center. Children come to Dr. Gloyd for annual eye exams around the age of five years old if they don’t have a history of eye problems. Of course, if they do have vision problems children would see him at a much younger age. It is extremely important for children to have that first eye exam at an early age to prevent eye problems like amblyopia. Dr. Gloyd explained that amblyopia is an eye problem where one of the two eyes is not correctable to 20/20. “One eye sees normal with a pair of glasses or even without sometimes and the other Dr. Deanna Davis-Rolle eye, no matter how much prescription you put in front of it, doesn’t actually clear to 20/20. That is something that happens for most kids because they don’t have an exam early enough,” said Dr. Gloyd. Kids with amblyopia may not have had their first eye exam until they were eight years old or even into their preteen years when the problem could have been caught early and corrected with a pair of glasses, but lack of proper eye care means their vision doesn’t develop normally. “So they are not blind by any means, but they don’t see as well as the people that are around them,” said Dr. Amber Johnson Robinett Dr. Gloyd. pearly whites. Dr. Davis-Rolle often recommends Sonicare’s kids toothbrush because it plays music to let kids know how long to brush their teeth, which is usually two minutes. As children get more involved in school activities like sports, another alarm goes up for Dr. Davis-Rolle since kids tend to gravitate towards sports drinks like Gatorade that have a high sugar content. Ingesting too much of these types of drinks can lead to children having tooth decay. She talks with parents about substituting with water or electrolyte water. While on the topic of sports, Dr. Davis-Rolle begs parents to make sure their child is wearing the proper mouth guard while playing sports. “I see a lot of tooth fractures, front teeth fracturing, front teeth being knocked out. So it is really important to know that if the kid is participating in any type of sport that things happen.” She continued, “It may not be football but basketball, baseball. Make sure that they are wearing some type of athletic mouthpiece that is made for them to help protect their teeth.” Parents now check everything off your list because your child is now officially ready to go back-to-school.

AUTO

Show Up #LikeAPro in the 2017 GMC Acadia Denali By Reginald Dominique, Video and Social Media Editor

2017 GMC Acadia Denali ove over third row competitors, there’s a new guy in town! With its slimmer physique, added third row, sharper looks, and safety upgrades, the all-new 2017 GMC Acadia Denali is clearly General Motors way of telling its competitors to sort of back down. Whether you are a single bachelor who hangs with friends on the weekend or a soccer mom who’s busy carpooling during the week, there is no doubt that this SUV is a perfect fit for you. Here’s a quick rundown of what we like, what we don’t and the bottom line from Reggie’s Auto Report!

M

The first thing that is obvious when looking at the new Acadia is the brand new body style. The 2017 Acadia has had a major downsize. The moment you hit a sharp curb or have to make a u-turn in the new Acadia you appreciate the 2017’s shrinkage. It maneuvers around neighborhoods and city blocks unlike any other in its class and a noticeable difference from the older body style. Especially with the Denali’s 20-inch wheels, the ride is

12 12

absolutely polished and composed. Once you hop inside you will notice one of the greatest advantages of the Acadia is its interior space. The Denali model I tested came with two captain’s chairs in the second row instead of a bench (much more appealing) so passengers can sit comfortably without bumping elbows. The third row is a little cramped, but still suitable for small children. Inside you will also notice a very nice interior with soft materials all around and a lot of stitching, which GM always does a great job on. The gauges are well laid out and the instrument panel is easy to read and navigate. There is a driver information center in the middle, which gives you all sorts of information, that is easy accessible and also can be operated from the steering wheel controls. It’s safe to say that the Acadia’s performance has everything to do with its new body style. It is a full 7-inches shorter, narrower, shorter in height, and shed 700 pounds. Of

Aug. 17 - Aug. 23, 2017 www.stylemagazine.com

course, all that was to make it more fuel-efficient and boost more horsepower. The old Acadia was quite large, but the 2017 is more along the lines with the size of a Dodge Durango or Ford Explorer. Most buyers will likely opt for the 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 Denali model similar to the one I spent a week with. It gets the Acadia moving quickly, hitting 60 mph in as little as 6.5 seconds, and can hit the road with the handling of a sedan with easy highway passing. If the top trim won’t work for you the Acadia Denali is also available with a 194hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that (from reports) is actually quite acceptable for everyday driving with a light load pushing 0 to 60 mph in at least 9.3 seconds. This model came nicely equipped with standard features such as pushbutton and remote start and front and rear parking assist. Another standout safety feature is the driver alert package that vibrates the seat if you stray out of your lane or if the Acadia senses a fron-

tal collision. In addition to lane departure, the steering wheel detects if you are drifting and will guide itself (essentially self driving) until the driver realizes and grabs the wheel. It also comes with low-speed automatic braking; blind spot monitoring; rearview, front view, and 360 surround view cameras; navigation; power lift gate; heated and cooled seats; power tilt and heated steering wheel; and a Bose stereo system, just to name a few. In closing, General Motors has done a great job with this vehicle. All of the upgrades are impeccable. Besides good EPA ratings of 18-city and 25-highway, it is easier to drive, park, and make a u-turn in. Our tested model was stickered at $52,185, with numerous options, but it is possible, however, to get a base Acadia for around $30,000. Make your way to your local GMC dealership today and test drive the 2017 GMC Acadia Denali. You will thank us later! For more information, visit www.GMC. com

SPORTS Measuring Stick:

Houston Texans vs New England Patriots By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer

T

he Houston Texans will take on Super Bowl Champions New England Patriots in their second preseason game. It will be a good test for the Texans as the Patriots have set the bar for excellence in the National Football League. Hopefully, some of that will rub off on Houston as they get a chance to witness first-hand how a champion prepares for the season. When you can see how future Hall of Famers as with Coach Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady set the tone for the rest of the team, you take advantage and notes. There are a number of key positions Houston Texans Head Coach Bill O’ Brien will be looking at in this game including WR, QB, and OL just to name a few. “Continued improvement. I think the guy comes out every day and tries to get better, and that’s what you’ve seen. He is improving in his knowledge of our system, he’s improving in understanding the defensive looks,” said coach O’Brien when asked about first round draft pick QB Deshaun Watson. The

quarterback position is one of the spots the Texans need to improve on after the one year experiment with Brock Osweiler (Cleveland Browns) didn’t work. Watson took some snaps with the first team offense, but for right now Tom Savage is still the starter. “It’s different just because I am getting reps with the ones against the ones. That’s been huge for me. Just knowing I can go out there and I can do this and I can take over for this team and handle it,” said a very confident Savage when asked about his mindset this year. The defensive unit will look to work AllPro J.J. Watt back into the rotation as he will get more snaps in the next game. Practicing against the Pats offense was a great way to see how his progression is going. “It’s always good to go out there and get some reps against somebody of that caliber (Brady),” said Watt. He went on to say that he treats every practice like he does a game, so there is really no difference to him. Houston has put together a very good plan to keep J.J. healthy

Deshaun Watson and Tom Brady this season that hopefully will pay dividends for 16 games and beyond. Houston will be looking for a repeat performance from the RB position as rookie D’Onta Foreman will carry a lot of the load. This will give Coach O’ Brien a chance to evaluate what has turned out to be a loaded back field for the Texans. When asked about the rookie this week starting running back Lamar Miller had nothing but high praises for the former University of Texas running back. “I think he has been doing a great job get-

ting adjusted to the NFL. I think he has done a great job in practice and his first preseason game,” said Miller. The Texans will once again be without their starting offensive lineman Duane Brown as he continues to hold out of training camp. If this lingers on it could become a problem as the franchise looks to have a breakout season and improve on last year’s success. Kick-off is at 7pm (CST). For more info, go to www.williamhenry.com.

BOOKS

“The Diplomat’s Daughter” by Karin Tanabe

H

By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

e almost got your nose. Or your cheek. Awkward, for sure, but on the second try, it finally happened. Then again. And again, each one sweeter than the last. As long as you live, you’ll never forget your very first romantic kiss or the person who gave it to you – even if, as in the novel, “The Diplomat’s Daughter” by Karin Tanabe, there’s a war outside the window. Emiko Kato had been around the world and had never really thought of settling in any one place – until she met Leo Hartmann. They’d gone to a Viennese Catholic school together – she, the eighteenyear-old child of a Japanese diplomat; he, the son of a wealthy Jewish chocolatier – and their singularity brought them together. Young and in love, they were making plans for a future together when the Nazis invaded Vienna. They’d promised to write one another daily, but who knew where life was taking them? Emi’s father was sent to America, for safety’s sake and then, after December 7, 1941, to a series of guarded hotels. By the time she and her mother landed at

an internment camp, it had been months since Emi’d heard from Leo. The loneliness she felt caused her to make what she was certain was a mistake: she fell in love with Christian Lange. College, followed by a life in industry: that was the plan for seventeen-year-old Christian, son of a German-born Milwaukee steel manufacturer. Raised in comfort and privilege, Christian was expected to take over his father’s business – until the Germans aligned themselves with the Japanese. Days after Pearl Harbor was bombed, Christian was separated from his parents, sent to an orphanage, then to an internment camp in Texas, where the next stop was to a country he’d barely ever visited. Leo Hartmann’s parents owed their very lives to Emi Kato’s father. It was he who got them out of Vienna. It was he who got them to relative safety in Shanghai even though, as Jews, they were far from safe. Kato did it for his daughter, and Leo would never forget her – even after he knew he must… When reading “The Diplomat’s Daughter,” there are four words

to remember: Im. Possible. To. Stop. So rich is the tale, so well-told the characters that this is one of those carry-it-around, don’t-need-a-bookmark kinds of novels that you’ll be itching to finish. World War II fanatics will be happy to see that authenticity oozes from each facet of the story – author Karin Tanabe really did her homework – and the tiny details she carefully included just shimmer in the midst of a horrifying tri-level story of war, loss, strength, and aloneness. It’s a tale that could have had any number of endings,

each one better than the last, but it culminates in the one that’s righteously perfect. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves: First, start “The Diplomat’s Daughter,” and clear your calendar. Start it, and forget about all your weekend plans. Start it, and your nose will be stuck in this unforgettable novel until the end. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

Thurgood Marshall School Welcomes Mayor Turner Photography by Vicky Pink exas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law welcomed the next generation of lawyers with the incoming class of 2020. Bringing special greetings to the class was Mayor Sylvester Turner who jumpstarted the students’ orientation. Mayor Turner’s message was one of inspiration and encouragement to the entire TMSL constituency to aspire for success, while transcending the institution and this great city “to a better tomorrow.”

A Question of Faith Screening Photography by Vicky Pink ongresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Bishop James Dixon II of the Community of Faith Church hosted a private screening of ‘A Question of Faith.’ Dozens of Houston’s leading pastors, elected officials, and civic leaders attended the red carpet screening and were able to interact with actors following the viewing of the film. The film ‘A Question of Faith’ addresses multiple relevant issues such as forgiveness, overcoming racism and diversity. It reveals the reality of the pain we cause others through our mistakes and pre-judgment. It also shows how powerful we are when people unite. Faith endures! Some in attendance were Gregory Alan Williams, Captain Paul Matthews, and Pastor Terrance H. Johnson.

or some parents, back-to-school season can be bittersweet as they watch their kids grow more independent each year. Taking on an active role at your child’s school is a simple way to provide support and stay engaged. Today’s teachers are busier than ever, developing classroom lessons, teaching to rigorous curriculum standards, coaching and chairing extracurricular activities and tackling their own professional development goals. This can leave little down time to coordinate special activities or classroom celebrations, but that’s where parent volunteers can play an essential role. Develop relationships with teachers. Creating a connection with your child’s teacher can be based on more than checking in on performance and behavior. Sharing resources and ideas with teachers makes you an ally
