COMMENTARY

Donald Trump’s Symbols and The Substance of Division

S

By Jesse Jackson, National Writer

ymbols are important. Donald Trump, whose fortune is built upon a brand, and whose presidential campaign brandished symbols far more than reform ideas, knows that well.

gation and white supremacy, of succession and sedition now are under attack. Trump’s decision to tout the symbols of the Confederacy sends a message that is clear to everyone.

deportations back up his purposeful insults to Mexicans and Muslims during the presidential campaign. Symbols and substance go together. There is no confusion about where Trump stands.

When Trump tweets his regret that the removal of “beautiful statues and monuments” commemorating the Confederacy subverts “the history and culture of our great country,” he knows the message he is sending.

What is particularly vicious about the Trump presidency is that his embrace of the symbols of oppression is accompanied by policies that push the substance of oppression. His Justice Department sides with voter suppression, not voting rights.

As Eric Foner, the eminent historian of the Civil War period, writes in the New York Times, statutes to Confederate leaders “say a lot more about the time they were erected than the historical era they evoke.” The first great surge of Confederate monuments was built in the 1890s as segregation -- legalized apartheid -- was being enforced across the South. The second wave came in the 1920s, marking the height of segregation and of lynching. The third wave came in the 1950 and ‘60s in reaction to the civil rights movement.

It pushes for harsher criminal sentences in drug cases and abandons efforts to reform policing, despite the reality of entrenched, racially biased practices. His “health care reform” was in fact a wealth bill, designed to strip millions of low wage and elderly workers of health care in order to pay for tax breaks for the very few.

Trump’s symbolic posturing has offended conventional opinion. Republican leaders such as Sen. Robert Corker of Tennessee have questioned not only whether Trump has the “competence” but also whether he has the “stability” to be president. Others have criticized Trump’s effort to equate neo-Nazis with those who protest against them.

His budget -- featuring deep cuts in support for public education, for Pell grants for needy students, for food stamps and affordable housing -- savages programs for the vulnerable -- disproportionately people of color -- in order to offer up even more tax breaks for the corporations and the rich. His posturing on the “wall,” his Muslim travel ban and his ramping up of

Foner cites historian Carl Becker, who wrote that “history is what the present choose to remember about the past.” It is not surprising that the symbols of segre-

Addressing the symbols is important. Drawing the line against neo-Nazi movements is essential. The question, however, is whether the legislators continue to support Trump’s policies even as they express dismay about his divisive comments. As he departed from the White House, Trump’s “strategist” Steve Bannon exposed what we know is the cynical strategy. Scorning the white supremacists as “clowns,” Bannon revealed their utility: The longer Democrats “talk about identity politics, I got ‘em,” he told Robert Kuttner of the American Prospect. “I want them to

talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.” Throughout our history, cynical politicians have used race-bait politics -- dividing working and poor people from one another -- to serve the powerful. Now, with inequality at obscene extremes, and the vast majority of Americans understanding that the rules of this economy have been rigged, it isn’t surprising that someone with Trump’s agenda would seek to fan the flames of racial division. Dr. Martin Luther King argued, “The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” That isn’t inevitable. It depends upon the active engagement of people of conscience working to make this a more perfect nation, with liberty and justice for all. Now more than ever, we need a new justice movement, turning back the efforts to divide us in both symbols and substance. You can write to the Rev. Violence in Charlottesville Prompts New Name for University of Houston Dorms [Houston Public Media]

T

he recent violence in Charlottesville has prompted the University of Houston to rename one of its dorms, which shared a name with John C. Calhoun, who advocated for slavery. Technically, the Calhoun Lofts at UH were named for the city street that runs in front of the dorms, which are reserved for upperclassmen. But the University of Houston has decided to change the name to “University Lofts” as soon as it’s practical. Calhoun was a U.S. vice president who promoted slavery and was a white supremacist. UH spokesman Mike Rosen said in a statement that UH decided to change the dorm name because of recent events and “out of sensitivity” to the diverse student body on campus.

The joint agreement outlined the construction of a high-speed train between Houston and North Texas, including proposed traveller-friendly connections between the new train station and the greater Houston region. It was signed between Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and representatives of Texas Central. Both parties will also finalize Houston’s passenger station site, which is scheduled to be built around the area south of US 290, west of Loop 610 and north of Interstate 10. The project is expected to generate nearly $36bn in direct economic activity over the next 25 years, as well as create around 10,000 direct jobs annually during construction and up to 1,000 jobs after commencing operations.

federal court issued a temporary restraining order against the City of Houston Tuesday in an ongoing lawsuit challenging two city ordinances that target the homeless. Specifically, Tuesday’s ruling prevents law enforcement from citing or arresting anyone for using a tent on public property. The ACLU of Texas, the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty and Dechert LLP applied for the restraining order following police raids of a Houston homeless encampment. Attorneys for both sides must now meet to determine a date for a full hearing on the lawsuit. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the city of Houston was disappointed in the order that was released.

The university is currently trending 8% ahead of last year’s certified enrollment of 8,762. That surge is driven in large part by a nearly 15.0 percent increase in the number of first-time, full-time freshmen. Additionally, PVAMU has noted a 2-4% increase in retention for continuing students. While these record enrollment numbers are not yet finalized, as enrollment numbers are not official until after the 20th day of classes, the preliminary results mark extraordinary enrollment growth. Given last year’s phenomenal growth, the university put several measures in place to accommodate an increased student body.

hen it comes to healthcare, the Lone Star State is near the bottom of the list. According to a new study from WalletHub, Texas is the 11th worst state for healthcare in 2017. The financial website ranked the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia on metrics in three categories: cost, accessibility, and outcome. In Texas, monthly insurance premiums are $302 on average (the eighth cheapest), and we pay $95 for a medical visit and $88 for a dental visit, also among the cheapest costs. However, our overall cost ranking is No. 44, due in part to the staggering 18.2 percent of adults won’t go to the doctor simply because of the cost.

TAMU Students Fundraise for First African American Statue [KAGSTV.com]

he campus of Texas A&M is filled with many statues that represent the rich history of the University, and now students at A&M are on a mission to add to that history by bringing the first African American statue to the campus. Michael Buse said they are starting the process of trying to get a statue of Mathew Gaines at Texas A&M. Gaines is a former slave turned state senator and was a key part of the creation of Texas A&M University, which is why organizers feel having a statue of Gaines would add to the history of the University. “There is no representation of any people of color who were involved in the creation of Texas A&M, it’s all white men, so we think it’s time for that representation of our narrative to come into fruition,” said Buse.

If you think that’s impressive (it is), consider this: Best Buy, a company many investors assumed was in big trouble because of the threat from Amazon, is up 55%. The brick and mortar retailer’s remarkable success is all the more impressive because it sells many of the same things you can buy on Amazon. Some retailers appear Amazon-proof. Home Depot comes to mind. You’re probably a lot more likely to go to Home Depot for plywood than purchase it from Amazon. HBCUs Finding Avenues of Help with UNCF By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

Their lifeline was promised to them this past February from the Trump administration when he paraded close to 100 HBCUs presidents to Washington, D.C. for that massive photo opp when he signed the new HBCU initiative. Announcing that the initiative would be a top priority for his administration, he moved it from the Department of Education to the White House with the new name Presidential Executive Order on The White House Initiative to Promote Excellence and Innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The order was to establish an executive director to the new initiative that would focus on enhancing relations with the private sector, enhancing planning and development, and participating in federal programming. Today’s kids would laugh at yesteryear’s kids as they are taking businesses started in their tiny bedrooms to the bargaining table inside big boardrooms where they are calling the shots and making deals, pulling in cash, and employing more than just mom and dad. Advancements in technology and the use of social media have allowed today’s kids to really develop their business and brand into something big.

“Let’s do this.” In April 2012, the girls were in business with an online store selling suga scrubs and body mists. Lovell’s Food for Thought: Reinventing the Wheel As a Threat to Progress By Dr. Lovell A. Jones

s humans, we are always striving to receive credit for creating and/ or doing something new. What I have learned, is that, for most things, they are not new, we are just improving on a concept. But when does improving and/or reinventing something become detrimental to the process? That is the question I am asking, especially in terms of health inequities, where the funds to address this issue is not limitless, but the knowledge brought together is. I firmly believe that the health of African Americans is dependent on the health of All Americans and that the health of all Americans is dependent on the health of African Americans. One of the strengths of the former Congressionally mandated Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH), as well as its Achilles Heel, was the fact that it tried to address the health of all American. Focusing primarily on the underserved, it built its efforts around its Community Relations Coordinators (African Ameri-

cans – Kelly Hodges); Asian Americans – Dr. Beverly Gor; Native Americans – Cheryl Downing; and Hispanic Americans – Angelina Esparza). Although we did not have a specific Community Relations Coordinator for the poor or rural Americans, their issues were always front and center. CRMH was a multi-disciplinary with the community always at the center of what it did. Again, this was our greatest strength and our greatest weakness. Focusing on the community truly allowed us to come up with unique and sustainable solutions. However, by not approaching a specific ethnic group created funding issues. For example, when we approached one government agency with a grant they clearly wanted to fund, we were given a choice, focus on one population or not be funded. You know what we decided. It was better to have something than nothing. And what we learned, we passed on to those grantees working on other pop-

ulations. And I will let you guess about whether we focused on only one population. Today, because of the renewed interest in health disparities/inequities, there are many more groups popping up to address this issue. The problem is that there are many more groups popping up to address this issue, creating more and more silos. To me, this continues to be one of the major threats to addressing the issue health inequities, the continued need to reinvent the wheel. The continued need for someone to be assigned credit. I just saw another organization being created to hold another meeting to address the issue of health. My first thoughts were, “Why are they doing this? What is the real reason(s) behind this effort?” I am not asking these questions because I have seen or tried everything; I have not. But being at this for almost forty years, there are very few things I have not seen and/or tried. My next thought was what were they trying that was new? From my review, I can safely say that what they

were trying I have seen this and tried it more than once before. So, my question to any group addressing this issue or any other issue is, have you surveyed to see what is out there? If so, is the group and/or organization still around? If they are, find out why have they been successful or not in addressing the issue? If they have or have not so far, is there a need to form a new organization? If so, why? Can an alliance be formed with the organization(s), bringing your strengths together? If there is a need to create something new after going through this exercise that is great. However, if there is not a real need, forming such new group(s)/organization(s) may do more harm than good. And finally, think about this, creating more slices to a pie does not necessarily increase the number who can be fed at the table. Share this story online at stylemagazine. com.

EATFill WITH STYLE Up Your Food Tank Without Emptying Your Wallet at The Oceanaire By TotallyRandie, Feature Writer

S

o, we are well into week 3 of Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW) and are rounding third bringing it home. But, before we do let’s recap week two! Of course, with every #EatingWithStyle segment that I write, I want to bring you something out of the norm. This week I wanted to taste more bang for my buck! It was #SundayFunday and my siblings and I planned to have a sibling dinner.

flavor are exceeded. The menu is based on market availability, therefore our selections change each day,” said Chef Kirkland.

Since I’m always the one picking the restaurants I suggested The Oceanaire Seafood Room. I have perused over the HRW list at least 100 times, and while I could be wrong because so many restaurants are participating and giving back, I believe Oceanaire is the only restaurant that has a Surf & Turf on their menu (that doesn’t include a surcharge).

It wet my appetite for my second course. My five siblings choose, the Shrimp Diablo (large bacon wrapped shrimp with cream cheese and jalapeno), Seafood Gumbo (shrimp, crab, and andouille sausage), which comes in a cute teacup with just the right amount of rice, and Salmon smoked to perfection with capers, pickled shallots and whole grain mustard mayonnaise.

The Oceanaire Seafood Room is tucked in a corner of the Galleria Mall located in Houston, TX, nestled next to Peli Peli and Kona Grill. With their seafood being imported every 24 hours, their commitment to freshness sets them apart from the rest. Their culinary team is headed by Executive Chef Lawrence Kirkland.

For my second course, I surfed & turfed with a 5oz Prime Flat Iron Medium Rare Steak, and a fresh 5oz Lobster Tail. Add garlic butter sauce and a shared a ’la carte side order and I was reaching full on my food tank! My siblings rode my wave and surfed right along with me, with the exception of my baby sister who choose the cheesy Shrimp & Grits (5 sautéed shrimp with Cajun butter sauce & white cheddar grits).

“Only top-of-the-catch fish from the world’s most reputable suppliers is served, and each dish is carefully crafted to ensure the restaurant’s high standards of quality and

14 14

But enough of the big talk WHAT DID I EAT? For our first course, I had the Mini Crab Cake. Yes, it is mini and there is only one, but it’s packed with flavor! The creamy mustard mayo opened up the flavor of the fresh crab and onion.

By this time, we were so full that we forgot that we had dessert coming. I choose

the Cheesecake, which is your traditionally made cheesecake with a graham cracker crust, caramel and chocolate drizzle, topped with chopped nuts. My siblings choose the same thing with the exception of my younger sister who went with the Key Lime Pie. If you are thinking that you are not getting enough food when you go dine, maybe you are visiting the wrong restaurant. As if this amazing meal wasn’t enough, The Oceanaire Seafood Room also gives

you the option to choose a bottle of wine (Chardonnay or Cabernet) for an additional 35 dollars. The service was amazing and the atmosphere gave my siblings the perfect dinner we needed before we sent off our baby sister to Texas A&M to start her sophomore year. “Truth Doesn’t Have a Side” by Dr. Bennet Omalu (with Mark Tabb)

E

By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

veryone you meet has an effect on your life. Somehow, in some way, others change you: a stranger’s smile lifts your mood. Kindness makes you happy. An injustice spurs you to action, making you someone else’s change. Clearly, as in the new memoir “Truth Doesn’t Have a Side” by Dr. Bennet Omalu (with Mark Tabb), a chance meeting could alter your path. Sometime toward the end of 2002, Bennett Omalu met Mike Webster. More specifically, Omalu met Autopsy A02-5214. That was Webster. It was a meeting that Omalu later said he wished had never happened… Omalu was born in the midst of a bombing raid on the small Nigerian town in which his parents had taken refuge. Civil war didn’t last long but it left its mark: Omalu says he was always physically small for his age, due to wartime malnutrition, but it didn’t affect his mental abilities. Omalu’s father, a self-made man with a college degree, insisted that his children become educated; Omalu started school at age three.

He was an introverted child, a dreamer, and “lazy,” but Omalu knew he could get good grades if he wanted them. The problem was, he didn’t want them, until an older sister enticed him with money. His grades rose and he became a star student who dreamed of becoming a pilot – but Omalu’s father had other ideas. He wanted another doctor in the family. Unwilling to disappoint his father, Omalu entered medical school at age sixteen, with an eye toward going to America. Med school revealed to him that he was uncomfortable with caring for living patients so, by the time he emigrated, he’d shifted his focus to a career in research. Later, he reached for a fellowship in pathology. His first autopsy was unsettling, he says, until he recognized the humanity of the remains before him. As he does even today, he asked the deceased to help him understand. And then he met Mike Webster…So you’ve seen the movie, Concussion. You may’ve even read the book. So why read

this one, written by the guy the other book and film are about? If you’ve always felt that the book is better than the movie, you know why: in “Truth Doesn’t Have a Side,” author Bennet Omalu (with Mark Tabb) offers his own tale, first-hand, with a different focus. Omalu tells readers more about himself, explaining how faith protects and drives him, and laying his success at God’s feet. This, along with his detailed story, gives a clearer picture of the man who confronted the NFL. And that’s where the second half of this book takes you: to Omalu’s discovery, uncovery, his opinions and conclusions, and his battle for recognition, both in findings

and out. It’s this second half that may disturb football fans. It may shock parents. It could change your weekends. If you can handle that, then grab this elegantly graceful, informative bio-wrapped-in-science and have a seat. “Truth Doesn’t Have a Side” is good, so settle in and meet your next favorite book. For another side of the subject, check out “Playing Hurt: My Journey from Despair to Hope” by John Saunders. It’s a story of football and depression – something, coincidentally, that Omalu says he suffered from, too. Together, these books will have you glued to your seat.
