COMMENTARY John McCain, Patriot S

By Jesse Jackson, National Writer

en. John McCain is a patriot. Now, as he battles against a brutal affliction, he has earned recognition as a man of honor. He has served his country, often at great sacrifice. And even now, he is using his stature to warn this country against a wayward course. Contrary to Donald Trump, McCain is a true American hero. Shot down over North Vietnam in 1967, he was seriously injured and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was tortured after he refused an offer to be repatriated ahead of other captives who had been held longer. Instead, he stayed with his fellow prisoners for five long, painful years. After he retired from the Navy, McCain was elected first to the U.S. House of Representatives and then to the Senate in 1987. As a senator, he was a conservative who sought to get things done. He joined with Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin to sponsor campaign finance reform. He pushed for a reopening diplomatic relations with Vietnam. He worked with Sen. Ted Kennedy, another Democrat, on comprehensive immigration reform. He gained a reputation as a maverick. When he won the Republican nomination for president in 2008, he ran a brass-knuckled campaign, even naming Sarah Palin as his running mate. Yet he refused to traffic in hate and lies. He famously defended Barack Obama

at one of his rallies when a supporter said, “I can’t trust Obama. I have read about him and he’s not, he’s not ... he’s an Arab.” “No ma’am, McCain said, “He’s a decent family man, a citizen that I just have to have disagreements with on fundamental issues.” Later, after supporters voiced their surprise, he would not pander, saying: “He is a decent person and a person you do not have to be scared (of) as president. ... I want everyone to be respectful, and let’s make sure we are. Because that’s the way politics should be conducted in America.” In recent years, McCain has grown more conservative as the Republican Party has lurched to the right. Yet he has continued to show his independence. When Donald Trump scorned McCain during the presidential primaries as not being a hero because he had been shot down, McCain did not take the bait. But he also did not sign up for the choir. When Trump’s “Access Hollywood” tape came out, McCain withdrew his endorsement, even though he was in the midst of a tough race for re-election. He stated the simple truth that Trump’s “demeaning comments about women and his boasts about sexual assaults” rendered it “impossible to offer even conditional support,” and vowed to write in a “good conservative Republican” when he voted.

McCain was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. Since then, he has repeatedly raised his voice to warn Americans against extremism. He voted against the Republican bill to repeal health care reform. As a man of the Senate, he was particularly agitated at the irregular procedures used to try to rush through what would have been a massive change impacting millions. He called for the Senate to return to “regular order.” He voted against the attempt to transform health care with only Republican votes for a bill that most senators had no time to read, with no hearings and no time for a full Congressional Budget Office estimate. Accepting the 2017 Liberty Medal this month, McCain called for Americans to stay true to the “ideals we have advanced around the globe,” and denounced as unpatriotic “half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems.” He did not name Donald Trump and his political assassin Steve Bannon, but he did not need to. McCain is not a saint. He knows how to throw a punch. This week, commenting on the Vietnam War, he made a fundamental point while putting the shiv in Donald Trump. “One aspect of the conflict ... that I will never, ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest income level of America and the highest income level found a doctor

that would say that they had a bone spur,” he said. Trump, of course, took five deferments to avoid service in the war, the last of which was for a bone spur. A staunch conservative, McCain stands against much that I believe is vital to this country. He opposed health care reform and joined in the Senate obstruction of all things Obama. He supports the endless wars without victory in the Middle East, and voted for the invasion of Iraq, surely the worst debacle since Vietnam. He supports tax cuts for the rich and cutting services for the vulnerable. He opposes Medicare for All, tuition-free college, expanding Social Security, lifting the minimum wage and more. He is a patriot, not a progressive. His stance, however wrong-headed, is held without venom. We can agree to disagree. These disagreements on policy and on principle, however, do not erase the reality that John McCain is a man of the Republic, serving it with honor in the winter of his years. He deserves our gratitude and our respect. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. District Attorney Drops Felony Indictments Against Representative Dukes [TexasMonthly.com]

A

Texas prosecutor was once fond of saying there are crimes and there are sins, and you can only prosecute the crimes. On Monday, State Representative Dawnna Dukes’s lies and misuse of office were downgraded from potential felonies to mere transgressions. A Travis County grand jury indicted Dukes this past January on thirteen counts of feloniously tampering with a government record by filing requests for daily legislative pay even when she didn’t go to the Capitol to work. But as prosecutors prepared for trial last month, they discovered that the House does not actually enforce its written rule that lawmakers must physically work from the Capitol to draw daily pay. That unraveled the key to the indictments, which was that Dukes claimed to have worked at the Capitol when she did not.

onald Trump’s sons, Eric and Donald Jr., are reportedly investing in luxury resorts in one of the poorest regions of America: the Mississippi Delta. The area happens to be in the heart of Trump’s base. The brothers claim the towers, which are part of a program that the Trump Organization is calling an “American Idea,” will start with a four-star, 100-room Scion hotel designed to look like an antebellum plantation, Newsweek reports. The actual “American Idea” is that Eric and Don Jr. will be reopening two Comfort Inns and Rodeway Inns, but will bring them up to “Trump standards,” according to The Washington Post.

Houston Astros Show Their Strength and Resilience to Earn History

By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer

H

istory has a funny way of repeating itself. It has been twelve years since the last category three or stronger hurricane made landfall on the United States soil. Ironically, it was also the last time the Houston Astros made it to the World Series.

And then a funny thing happened. A glimpse of hope was given to a city that is still recovering from over a trillion dollars worth of damage caused by the hurricane.

The Houston Astros rallied from a 3-2 deficit to defeat the New York Yankees in game 7 of the Two months ago, the city of Houston and American League Championship Series to win surrounding areas were hit hard with one of its first ever American League Pennant since the worst natural disasters since October 2005. switching leagues in 2013. That victory sent the Hurricane Harvey flooded over 70% of Harris Astros back to the World Series for the first time County with at least 1.5 feet of water and left since 2005 and the second time in the franchise an estimated 136,000 flooded structures in the history. Soon after they learned they would go county. This also affected the Astros. to cap off this dream of a season. “Everybody has been pulling together and it’s kind of a dream come true for this city to make it this far and have a chance to win the World Series,” said Astros owner and chairman Jim Crane. This trip to the “Fall Classic” means a lot to a team who struggled through three consecutive seasons of over 100 plus losses. Their combined record from 2011- 2013 was a horrid 163 wins – 324 losses and they did not go over .500 in the win column until 2015. This year alone they had 101 wins, which qualify for the most in franchise history. One player, who has been through the trials and tribulations with this team, is potential 2017 American League MVP, Jose Altuve. The Astros All-Star second baseman is the heart and soul of this team and was here during that awful threeyear stretch. He is an example of “walk light and carry a big stick.” The three-time A.L batting champion had over 200 hits for the fourth year in a row and is currently hitting .386 with 5 home runs and 8 runs batted in. It was the future baseball Hall of Famer who sent a mammoth home run out of Minute Maid Park in the bottom fifth inning of game 7

of the ALCS that helped seal the victory over the New York Yankees. Houston Astros baseball fans received a gift from the baseball gods at the end of August when American League All-Star pitcher, Justin Verlander, agreed to drop his notrade clause with the Detroit Tigers and sign with the Houston Astros.

I believe it is safe to say that he has been as good as advertised. Since coming to Houston, he has not lost a game. Verlander went 9-0 in the regular season and 4-0 in the postseason with a combined 91 strikeouts and only 17 walks. His game six performance against New York helped the Astros tie the series 3-3 and would earn him the ALCS MVP. Taking this journey with the Astros has been the orange wearing, loud rallying, always supporting Houston fans. This trip to the World Series brought about the strong, positive buzz the city needed after being devastated by Hurricane Harvey. It has been a long time coming just ask die-hard Houston Astros fan, Jacques Hudson. He has been rooting for the Astros for a long time and remembers the last time the team played in the World Series and is excited about the possibility of the Astros bringing the title home. “It’s a dream come true. We have been through a twelve-year drought and now we are back in the fold. This year seems different because we have such a young team, compared to the last time when the window was closing on some of the seasoned veterans that were part of that 2005 team,” said Hudson. Currently, the World Series title is up for grabs with both the Astros and Dodgers each having a one game win under their belts proving that this will be a nail-biter of a run. Houston Astros earned history winning their first World Series game in franchise history and being the first team to make three homeruns in extra innings in a World Series game. Just like the entire city, the Houston Astros are a strong team and seem to get stronger when they need to be most. They embody the words that have become the city’s new theme to show our resilience, Houston Strong. Stitched on the uniform of every Houston Astros player and coach right over their heart are the words, “Houston Strong.” Those powerful words mean so much to those who lost everything due to the storm because it means there strength in surviving, strength in not giving up and strength in overcoming any obstacle. The Houston Astros are just like that, strong until the finish. Good luck Astros. Finish strong, bring home the win, and earn history! mwww.StyleMagazine.com oc.enizagaMelytS.www www.stylemagazine.com

HEALTH Diagnosed Before 40: TGIN Founder &

Breast Cancer Survivor Shares Her Story By BlackDoctor.Org

W

hen Chris-Tia Donaldson released her first book, Thank God I’m Natural: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair, in the summer of 2009, it was quickly heralded at the “The Natural Hair Bible.” The book dispelled some of the most common myths and misconceptions about kinky hair and gave women a much-needed resource for how to embrace their coils. Following the success of the book, ChrisTia, a Harvard law school graduate who never had plans of being an entrepreneur, transitioned her talents to the launch of a natural hair care line, Thank God I’m Natural (TGIN). By 2015, the products she started out making in her kitchen with the help of family back in 2013 became a viable company with revenue topping $1 million. The now successful CEO, entrepreneur, author and public speaker has another title that she proudly claims: breast cancer survivor. The CEO used social media to chronicle her journey and continues to speak to women about the importance of early detection – even for women younger than 40. Chris-Tia shared her story with BlackDoctor.org via a Facebook Live interview. Below are highlights from the Q&A. Watch the full interview on the following page. BlackDoctor.org: I remember running into you often at LA Fitness years ago and I know your health is something that you take very seriously. Was the possibility of breast cancer something that was on your radar? Chris-Tia Donaldson: Absolutely not. There is no history of breast cancer in my family. I was also just 36 at the time of my diagnosis. When I thought of breast cancer, I thought of people like Sheryl Crow, Melissa Ethridge, Joan Lunden, Suzanne Sommers and Christina Applegate. I never gave much consideration that this was something that could happen to me. BDO: How did your diagnosis come about? Did you discover something abnormal during a self exam?

Chris-Tia Donaldson BDO: Your diagnosis came at the time of some very important business deals for TGIN and you pushed forward as planned. How did you know that was the right course of action for you, rather than stepping away to focus strictly on treatment? CD: When I first was diagnosed, my doctor asked me when could I start chemotherapy. I told them I had a meeting with Target on 3/22 that I had to look good for. Based on that, we scheduled my treatments in such a way, that I would be off and looking and feeling good for that meeting. But, I soon learned that, you can’t plan for everything, because we ended up getting calls to do meetings with Walgreen’s and Rite Aid and I just had to wing it even though I was at my weakest. BDO: Describe your treatment plan and experience with chemotherapy. CD: I had a lumpectomy, followed by 8 rounds of chemotherapy and 33 rounds of radiation. My doctors were extremely aggressive with their choice of treatment given my age. In older women, they tend to only do a lumpectomy and radiation, if the size of the mass is small, because of their shorter life expectancy.

CD: I was actually taking a shower and noticed it then. Initially, I thought it was hormonal related, because I had a cyst removed from my breast in my 20s. Given my age and In terms of the side effects, the biggest the fact that I felt perfectly healthy, breast thing is extreme fatigue and mild nausea. cancer was the furthest thing from my mind. concerned about losing your hair? CD: Of course, I was really nervous about losing my hair, especially since I run a hair care company. I’m supposed to be out there being the face of this hair care company, wheeling and dealing, and spreading knowledge of all things natural, so I felt a little nervous at times donning a wig. But it’s all good. I’ve never had any major issues or anyone say anything to me too crazy. The natural community has also shown me nothing but love since learning of my diagnosis. Now product development is a different story. I’m the primary tester of our products before they are released for testing by a group and so I was in a real crunch to expedite our product development cycle in order to develop our Edge Control and Curl Bomb Moisturizing Styling Gel before I had to shave my head for treatment. Now, that my hair is growing back, it’s back to the same old testing. But my hair is a little different now and I’m waiting to see if it will go back to its old texture. BDO: What are some things you did that helped you stay encouraged? CD: When I was first diagnosed and going through treatment, I would often “lurk” (okay maybe “stalk”) on the pages of people going through breast cancer treatment. Most people were extremely positive, and I would kind of live vicariously through their pictures, which allowed me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. BDO: What advice can you share to

women who may be newly diagnosed, or have a feeling something isn’t right but are afraid to bring it up to their doctor? CD: Advancements in cancer treatment hve come a really long way. If caught early, breast cancer is a treatable disease and is not a death sentence. The important thing is to know your breasts, stay in tune with your body, and talk to your doctor if you experience any major changes. Also, trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, listen to your gut. If you don’t feel like your doctor is giving you the best advice, seek a second opinion. BDO: What’s next for you and for TGIN? CD: The plan is to continue to focus on building and growing the business. Next year, we’ll be in more Target and Sally Beauty stores, plus we’re making a foray into the drug store market by launching in Walgreen’s, CVS and Rite Aid. Given the overwhelming feedback to my story on Instagram, I’m writing a book called This is Only a Test: What Breast Cancer Taught Me About Love, Hair, Faith and Business. BDO: Do you have a deeper appreciation for what makes you beautiful internally after this whole process? CD: I sure do. Now, I’m much more conscious of my internal spirit and how that is so much more important than the hair we have (or don’t have) and the makeup we wear.

STDs at Record High, Indicating Urgent Need for Prevention Latest U.S. data reveal threat to multiple populations

M

ore than two million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were reported in the United States in 2016, the highest number ever, according to the annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The majority of these new diagnoses (1.6 million) were cases of chlamydia. There were also 470,000 gonorrhea cases and almost 28,000 cases of primary and secondary syphilis – the most infectious stages of the disease. While all three of these STDs can be cured with antibiotics, if left undiagnosed and untreated, they can have serious health consequences, including infertility, life-threatening ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth in infants, and increased risk for

HIV transmission. “Increases in STDs are a clear warning of a growing threat,” said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. “STDs are a persistent enemy, growing in number, and outpacing our ability to respond.” Syphilis rates increased by nearly 18 percent overall from 2015 to 2016. The majority of these cases occur among men – especially gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) – however, there was a 36 percent increase in rates of syphilis among women, and a 28 percent increase in syphilis among newborns (congenital syphilis) during this period. More than 600 cases of congenital syphilis were reported in 2016, which has resulted in more than 40 deaths and severe health complications among newborns.

The disease is preventable through routine screening and timely treatment for syphilis among pregnant women. CDC uses STD surveillance data and other tools to detect and respond to these evolving threats and new challenges, directing resources where they can have the greatest impact. Maintaining and strengthening core prevention infrastructure is also essential to mounting an effective national response

to the STD epidemic. CDC provides support to state and local health departments for disease surveillance, disease investigation, and health promotion. CDC also issues and maintains testing and treatment guidelines for providers so individuals get the most effective care. More at www.cdc.gov.

EAT WITH STYLE Warm Up Fall Meals with Wine By Family Features

F

all is the perfect time to welcome warm, robust flavors to your kitchen as well as your wine glass. With its bold, spicy, dark fruit flavors, cabernet sauvignon is a perfect wine for crisp fall weather. Cabernet sauvignon is more versatile for pairing than some believe. It pairs well with different cheeses, meats, hearty vegetables and even fish. The key to creating a great dining experience is balancing the flavor of the meal with an elegantly balanced wine. When cooking, consider the three main flavors: sweet, salty and sour. Sweet sauces can make cabernet sauvignon taste harsh and astringent, which takes away from the fresh fruit flavors in the wine. However, sour and salty flavors can make the wine taste more vibrant, creating a velvety mouthfeel of soft tannins while making the fruit taste more pronounced. A well-balanced cabernet, such as Sequoia Grove Winery’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, pairs well with any meat or fish that is prepared with an acidic sauce or when given a squeeze of lemon juice. The winery, located in the heart of the Rutherford region in Napa Valley, specializes in the production of elegant, food-friendly cabernet sauvignon. Crafted by winemaker Molly Hill, the wine has aromatics of bright black cherries and blackberry, followed by cinnamon with a touch of black pepper. The palate is elegant with a round, full body, soft tannins and tasty blackberry flavors. This recipe for a savory lamb shank stew has just the right amount of salt, acid and spice to create a deliciously balanced meal that is perfect to pair with an elegant glass

A one-minute task now will help you avoid getting ripped-off if you’re locked out of your house tomorrow, while a 30-second fix on your laptop might save your privacy. And be sure to have the five-minute “Stranger Danger” talk… with your teen!

Cautionary tales like these can often be dark and ominous, but author Jeff Rossen shines serious light on scammers and dangers and things that go BUMP in your flight. With the help of his trusty staff, a bit of humor, and accounts of actual (sometimes shocking) experiments, he details cures for common, and not-socommon, consumer complaints.
