COMMENTARY True Scandal In Puerto Rican Recovery Effort Is Trump’s Dereliction
T
By Jesse Jackson, National Writer
he scandals around in Puerto Rico’s agonies are far greater than the bizarre contract to pay Whitefish Energy, a tiny Montana company from U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s hometown, $300 million to restore electric lines. Puerto Rico still lacks water, food and electricity. Ninety-eight schools just opened, but that represents less than 10 percent of the nation’s schools. And those opened have no generators for electricity, no air conditioning and no internet access. Students must bring their own water bottles and douse themselves with repellent to fend off the mosquito invasion that plagues the island. The failure of the U.S. government to meet the emergency has gotten some attention, even as Trump keeps claiming that the administration deserves an “A” for its efforts. Far too little attention has been given to the context for this crisis. Central to the crisis is catastrophic climate change: the effects of global warming that pose, as the Pentagon has concluded, a real and growing national security threat, particularly to islands like Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, both territories of the U.S. The Trump administration, however, remains in denial about climate change and is systematically rolling back all of the initial steps that the Obama administration made to even begin to address it. Puerto Ricans are suffering from the administration’s
inadequate response to a catastrophe. All of us -- and our children -- are likely to pay the price of the administration’s ignorant denial of a real security threat. Puerto Ricans also suffer from a lack of rights. They are American citizens without the right to vote. They have one nonvoting resident commissioner in the House of Representatives. If Puerto Rico were a state, it would have two senators and five representatives in the House. Such representation would surely win Puerto Ricans a fairer hearing in Washington. Puerto Rico is defined as a territory, but it is treated as a colony. Its people are U.S. citizens, but they are viewed as foreigners. That reality and the contempt that many in the Congress have for the U.S. possession handicap Puerto Rico in this catastrophe and in the future. Worse, Puerto Rican leaders are hamstrung by the island’s massive debts, and by the outside control board designed to force a harsh austerity on the island in order to insure that the speculators get repaid first. The catastrophe has brought Puerto Rico’s economy to a halt. Surely its creditors should write off much of their loans that have gone bad. U.S. assistance to rebuild Puerto Rico cannot be siphoned off to repay the debts of the past if the island is to have any hope of revival.
Without representation, the 3.4 million people in Puerto Rico must depend on the kindness of their fellow citizens. Perhaps Puerto Ricans who have settled in the U.S. mainland can mobilize to demand fair treatment for their compatriots. Perhaps their U.S. occupiers will understand the global shame that comes from failing our own citizens. With Republicans intent on passing $5 trillion in tax cuts, largely for the rich and the big corporations, while slashing spending on everything other than the military, the agonies of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are likely to continue. Some small steps should be taken. Puerto Ricans should have the first option on the contracts and jobs involved in rebuilding the island. The reconstruction needs labor, skilled and unskilled; the residents need jobs. If they get the contracts, the money will circulate in the island rather than be sent to the mainland. If there is a shortage of skilled occupations, investment in training and apprenticeships will pay massive dividends. Puerto Rican officials need to step up also, insuring that the contracting process is transparent and clean -- and cracking down on inanities like the Whitefish contract, which the governor has announced will be canceled. Disasters often open the door for massive rip-offs and fraud. The Trump
administration is systematically weakening enforcement of the laws and regulations on companies and bankers. Puerto Rican officials will have to be courageous enough to set the standards and enforce them. I am convinced that the steadfast leadership of Gov. Dr. Ricardo Rossello and the Maxine Waters-like spirit of Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz of San Juan, along with the diligence of responsible members of Congress such as Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, will make for a new, better and more powerful Puerto Rico. The devastation in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, raises a stark mirror on this administration. How can any president claim to Make America Great Again and then fail in the basic duty to protect this country’s citizens and help them recover from natural disasters? That question should haunt the president and the Republican leaders this Halloween, even as they peddle the next tax break for millionaires and billionaires. ouston Chronicle reports Houston ISD and a majority of Houston-area districts are bucking national trends when it comes to the hiring of African-American teachers. About 36.2 percent of teachers in Houston ISD are black, compared with about 7 percent nationwide and 10 percent in Texas. While 16 of 24 Houston-area school districts exceeded the state and national average for the percentage of teachers who are African-American, some have very few. Only four -- or 1.1 percent of -- teachers in Friendswood ISD are black. Katy ISD, which is the eighth-largest district in Texas, reported that about 6.4 percent of its teacher workforce was black in 2016-2017.

India’s reasons for sitting reflected similar reasons former San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick began protesting last year. The teen’s mother, Kizzy, filed a federal lawsuit that claims the teen was threatened by police if she did not arrive within five minutes to retrieve India after the expulsion, according to The Root. As of Friday, Oct. 6, India was allowed to return to school but she remains steadfast and will continue her protest despite possible backlash.

nearly $61 billion state plan to rebuild Houston and the Texas coast after Hurricane Harvey includes funding for three “coastal spines” to control flooding, new reservoirs and buyouts of thousands of properties. About 60 percent of the funding would go to “future proof” flood-prone areas and 33 percent would pay for buy-outs and elevating buildings in low-lying regions stretching roughly from Rockport to the Beaumont area and parts of Southeast Texas where Harvey hit hardest. Gov. Greg Abbott and top Texas leaders briefed top Washington officials and the Texas legislative delegation Tuesday afternoon on the previously undisclosed plan. Much of the funding would go to the Houston area — Texas’ largest city and the fourth largest in the United States.

Colin’s new book, however, has not yet been given a title, but no doubt, it will be about his heroic actions that have brought nationwide attention to the injustices that African Americans have to deal. Last year, Colin began protesting during the national anthem to highlight police brutality and systemic discrimination. But his protesting was silently done in the form of kneeling, and soon after, many other NFL players were inspired to do the same.

Bonded together by more than 6,500 dynamic, influential women leaders in 33 countries and 74 forums around the world, IWF has had the sole purpose of bringing diverse groups of women together from all over the globe to exchange ideas, learn, inspire, and build better leadership for a changing world since 1974. In addition to Secretary Clinton’s Hall of Fame induction, nine other women were honored with the Woman Who Makes a Difference Awards. The 2017 honorees were all very inspirational as they told their personal testimonies of the changes they have made not only in their communities but also worldwide. The mood of the night was heightened once attorney, advocate, former First Lady, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and the first woman to win a major party nomination for President of the United States the Honorable Hillary Clinton graced the stage. With a wonderful presentation re-
capping a few pivotal points in her life, the guest of honor made her way out. The room filled with a thunderous applause as many rose to their feet when Secretary Clinton emerged from behind the black drapes on to the stage. While thanking everyone in the room, Clinton made it a point to say, “Thank you Houston and Harris County for going BLUE in your latest Presidential Election!” She knew Houston was With Her. Acknowledging the strides she made in the political arena, Clinton knows more needs to be done. “I firmly believe the only way we are going to get sexism out of politics is to get more women into politics. I don’t think that applies just to politics. I think it applies to every industry,” she said.
or for her to be inducted into their Hall of Fame. “I want to be on the side of the problem solvers - not the problem explainers or exaggerators,” commented Clinton in her more than 20-minute speech. The 30-year IWF member concluded her speech with a challenge to the packed crowd on their personal role in today’s society. “We all in our own lives, in our families, and in our communities have a role to play in lifting up all women and honoring the success that they could have with the help and support of women like us.” The evening was definitely one to remember and it would not have been possible with out the efforts of IWF Global and Conference co-chairs former Houston mayor Annise Parker and Gracie Cavnar.

From the Bottom to the Top: Houston Astros Are World Series Champions
By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer
T
he Houston Astros are the 2017 World Series Champions. Ok. For Houston Astros fans, I know you don’t believe what you just read, so I will say it again. The best team in baseball for 2017 is your Houston Astros. This is the same team that at one point during the regular season in 2013 had a 14-million-dollar payroll on the field. They were the running joke of Major League Baseball for losing more than 100 games for three straight seasons and were nicknamed the “Lastros” by some fans. A team that had been swept 4-0 by the Chicago White Sox the last time they appeared in a World Series (2005) and defeated three of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball in the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Houston Astros defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 -1 in Game 7 of one of the most excit10 10
ing World Series ever to win the first title in franchise history. For those counting, that’s a 55-year drought dating back to 1962 when they were the Colt .45s. In this game, the Astros went back to doing what made them a 100-plus win team in 2017. They used a combination of small ball and good pitching to stifle the Dodgers who had the best record in MLB with 104 wins. “We held down a really tough lineup,” said Houston pitcher Charlie Morton, who gave up the game’s only run in the sixth inning. Normally a starter, Morton came in and pitched four innings in relief to end the game. That help saves an Astros’ bullpen that was having problems holding on to late inning leads. Starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. struggled with his command and hit a game high four batters before being pulled out by Astros manager A.J. Hinch. “I knew yesterday that I didn’t have much,” McCullers told reporters after the game.

Having a short-term memory will get you very far in major league baseball and that’s just what 2017 World Series Most Valuable Player Astros center fielder George Springer had in this series. He went 0-4 in Game 1 with four strikeouts, which prompted most MLB analysts and fans to say he should have been moved out of the leadoff spot in the lineup.
Houston,” Springer said with enthusiasm as his teammates watched him receive his MVP trophy.
The Commissioner ’s Trophy holds a special place in the heart of four Astros players on the current roster. All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve, DH/ outfielder Marwin Gonzalez, superstar pitcher Dallas Keuchel, and right-handed pitcher But just as the Astros organization Brad Peacock, all were with the has been doing since they made him franchise during those tumultuous a first-round draft pick in 2011, they 100 plus loss seasons. trusted the process and the 2017 AllStar. an understatement. All four players played a major part in the Astros run to the title. Potential A.L MVP Altuve hit a career-high .348 during the regular season and at one point was hitting .400 during the postseason. Gonzalez also had a great regular season by hitting a career high 23 home runs and 90 runs batted in. His double in last night’s game was intricate in helping the Astros secure more runs. Peacock’s 13 wins this season and his 3 2/3 innings in Game 3 of the World Series helped secure that game. Keuchel had an ERA of 2.90 to go along with his 14-regular season wins. After going through so much adversity to hold that trophy is a true result of hard work and dedication in those players’ eyes. For the citizens of Houston and surrounding areas, this championship is more than just a trophy. It is a breath of fresh air for a city that is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey two months ago. “It has been 55 years for baseball, and years since any championship in Houston. We’re vindicated finally. Go Stros’! Houston Strong baby!” said Marcus Kelley, a lifelong Astros fan. Kelley was just one of thousands of fans who were celebrating last night. Die-hard Astros fan Richard Cooper from the Woodlands has been waiting a very long time for this moment as well. “1995 was the last time Houston has celebrated a World Championship. The city has been through so much this year. Karma is finally on Houston’s side,” said Cooper as he reflected on the Astros’ big win. So, let’s hear it one more time for the home team that #earnedhistory. Can we say it all together? The Houston Astros are ‘WORLD CHAMPIONS.’ The entire Houston Astros team will be celebrated in grand fashion with a parade in Downtown Houston on Friday, November 3, 2017, at 2 pm. Get your spot early!

HEALTH Obama Wants You to Know Obamacare Open Enrollment Has Begun
By Tami Luhby/CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire

pen enrollment for Obamacare is here ... and former President Obama wants to make sure Americans know about it.
file as President Trump and congressional Republicans have sought to repeal the Affordable Care Act, extols several of the law’s most popular provisions.
The former president rolled out a video on Twitter and Facebook Wednesday touting many of the benefits of his signature health reform law.
“And thanks to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies can no longer charge you more just for being a woman, or for having a pre-existing condition,” he says in the video, which runs 1 minutes and 19 seconds. “That’s a good thing.”
The piece was made for Get America Covered, a group of Obama administration officials trying to boost enrollment for 2018. The effort seeks to counter the Trump administration’s downplaying of the signup season. Trump officials have slashed advertising funding by 90% and cut support for outreach and assistance. Stepping into the void, Obama tells viewers that healthcare.gov is open for business, noting that eight in 10 people can find policies for $75 a month or less.
His goal in participating in the social media campaign is to help make sure that millions of Americans who aren’t already insured understand that they still can get coverage through Healthcare.gov, a source close to Obama said. It’s a direct response to what the former president believes is a wealth of “misinformation” about his legacy achievement.
He brings back one of his favorite marketing points: “That’s cheaper than a lot of cell phone plans.”
In the video, the former president advises consumers to shop on healthcare.gov, even if they already have coverage, because they could save money. And he urges viewers to spread the word.

inger Chrisette Michele recently shared some of the struggles she has dealt with since the backlash she received after she made the decision to perform at President Trump’s inaugural ball. That backlash cut deep, including being dropped by her label, struggling with depression, and even suffering a miscarriage. The beautiful hit singer already had reproductive issues since suffering from not one, not two, but FOUR major issues including PCOS, fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis. But she says the pressures of this season in her life took her body over the edge. “I went from someone being revered and loved to facing putting out an album in the worst climate of my musical career,” she said in a series of posts on Instagram. She even shared a picture of her miscarriage on social media. She shares that all of this tried to take her down while she worked on an album titled, “Strong Black Woman.”

Meanwhile, Trump marked the start of open enrollment with a set of tweets promoting the repeal of Obamacare’s individual mandate, a key provision of the law which
requires nearly all Americans to have coverage or pay a penalty. Open enrollment lasts until Dec. 15 in the more than three dozen states that use the federal exchange, healthcare.gov. Some states that run their own marketplaces are keeping enrollment open as late as Jan. 31.

The Wine and Wagyu Returns to Capital Grille By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

eginning now until November 19, 2017, The Capital Grille is offering its Wine and Wagyu menu for only $25 dollars in The Lounge. The Wagyu Burger selections are The Grille’s Wagyu Cheeseburger, Caramelized Onion Wagyu, and a Waguy Bacon Cheeseburger. The wine selections are Caymus, which is a Cabernet Sauvignon Emmolo, a Merlot, and Belle Glos Las Alturas, a Pinot Noir. For this tasting, we returned to The Capital Grille located in City Centre, where Executive Chef Jeffrey Meyer was on hand to make our visit as special as always. We started our tasting with a shared plate of the Capital’s signature Fried Calamari and a round of Stoli Doli’s. The Calamari is coated lightly, pan-fried until crispy and golden, served with hot cherry peppers, and then devoured by this writer and a guest. The Stoli Doli is simply the Grille’s pineapple infused vodka that is kept on the bar in the lounge area and served cold. If one doesn’t try anything else when visiting this place, it is worth the trip to sit in the elegant lounge, take in the classy atmosphere, and sip on a Stoli or two and have a plate of the calamari. The Stoli has a clean and refreshing taste; it complements the squid and calms down the heat of the peppers in my view. We saved room for our burgers and I opted for

ou know how to use a hammer. It’s not that hard: just grab the end and swing. Easy enough; in fact, there are probably lots of tools you know how to use, although, as in the new novel “Unforgivable Love” by Sophfronia Scott, do you know how to use people? Absolutely nobody ever said “no” to Mae Malveaux. Young, beautiful, wealthy, and widowed, Mae ruled Harlem society with a silky hammer, surrounding herself with carefully-chosen sycophants and moneyed men who hoped Mae might fall in love with them. Mae wanted love, that’s true. But she wanted it her way – which is why she was angry when she saw her former lover, Frank Washington, in a nightclub she considered her domain. How dare he? She was even angrier when she learned that he planned to marry her cousin’s virginal daughter, Cecily. Mae seethed, until she noticed that Valiant Jackson had walked

the Wagyu Bacon Cheeseburger, which is made with “Candied Applewood Smoked Bacon and Vermont Cheddar.” My guest opted for the Caramelized Onion Wagyu Burger. We both had our burgers prepared medium-well, and they arrived on our plate accompanied by some truffle French Fries. The burgers were juicy and packed with flavor; the bacon and cheddar played well together and the portions were just right. The French Fries were cooked perfectly. They were crispy, seasoned just right, and we were so full. Though we decided to pass on the wine, and opt for a second round of Stoli’s, one can access by reading the menu that the pairings were well suited for the burgers we tasted. The Caymus is from Napa Valley, 2015, and is made by Chuck Wagner. The Merlot is from Napa Valley, 2013, and was made by Jenny Wagner. Finally, Pinot is from Santa Lucia Highlands, 2015, and was created by Joe Wagner. Learn more about the wines and the menu by visiting thecapitalgrille.com/events/ wagyu-burger-and-wine-pairing. Watch the videos, read the menu, then make your reservation, and enjoy your meal. Thanks for reading, and please continue to follow Team Style Magazine on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

AUTO Riding In the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime On a Generations Deep Adventure
I
By TotallyRandie, Feature Writer
t’s no secret that 2017 has been a rollercoaster of a ride for me. From January till Hurricane Harvey decided to close out the fiscal year with mass flooding, it seemed as if I was starring in a Lemony Snicket’s series of unfortunate events. Dealing with one life altering circumstance can weigh one down. Adding multiple issues can allow despair to creep in, depression can overtake strength, and giving up all together seems like the best option. But I, including my family, am just not built that way. Weak is not in our vocabulary. Qualities like holding each other accountable for our actions, having a fierce loyalty to the ones we care about, and being so loving that we allow it to conquer all. These same qualities in my family coincide with the Toyota brand to me. Toyota holds themselves accountable by not cutting corners and using the best materials because it’s just the right thing to do. Toyota customers are loyal to the brand because Toyota is loyal to them making sure they always get a fair shake. And, finally, Toyota is a loving company and they share the love with everyone under the umbrella of the brand – from their employees, customers, and the communities they support. Accountability, loyalty, and love are three important qualities that drive my family and Toyota. Here’s why.
Accountability:
Right is right and wrong is wrong. We do not stand by each other if we are wrong. This is extremely important to my family because if you don’t hold people accountable for their actions, then how can you correct a wrong; something that could possibly bring harm to others. Holding each other accountable, no matter how much it pains us
2017 Toyota Prius Prime to disagree or be disappointed in our family for a wayward decision, actually teaches valuable lessons like responsibility. A responsible driver is one that pays attention to the road, doesn’t text and drive, and knows their role behind is serious. I admit that although I know the importance of being a responsible driver, I get distracted. That’s why my favorite feature on the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime is the Color Head-Up Windshield Display. It is one of the ways Toyota holds me accountable. Information critical to driving is display right in front of you on the windshield without interfering with your drive. Each time there was a speed limit change it popped up on the display. I, then, had the
option to continue at my current speed or adjust my speed. Something so small as this decision could greatly impact my life as well as others.
Loyalty:
We are very loyal people. There is a famous quote from a very popular TV show called Game of Thrones that states, “A Lannister always pays its debts.” Well, the Bell family put our twist on it, “A Bell always keeps its word.” There are so many important foundational qualities wrapped up in loyalty, like dependable, trust and honesty; the same qualities we look for in brands. Customers can depend on Toyota to keep them safe, not only with just the most advanced airbag system ever, but also with Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alerts, Side Lane Sensors, and Intelligent Park Assist. Just like our word is our bond, Toyota’s is as well. Guaranteeing to save you money by producing the most advanced hybrid ever. With an average EPA estimate of 54-mpg city, Toyota is making sure you spend enjoying your ride versus filling up at a gas station. But what if you want to see an instant saving? Just by driving a plug-in electric vehicle like the Toyota Prius Prime, you can receive up to $4500 in federal tax credit. Cha-ching thanks to the federal government!
Love:
Of course, love is the greatest quality that drives my family. Love “covers a multitude of sins.” Love is the foundation of my family. Love keeps our bond tight, even when we don’t see eye-to-eye or have disagreements. Love moves us to want to see each other succeed. The next generation of my family will be successful because of the sacrifice other family members make today. Some
of my cousins are first generation college students, due to a loving family member that is working hard to see that young one become a college grad. We do everything out of love. Toyota shows love to not just its customers but to the planet. One can tell the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime was made out of love. Most shy away from plug-in vehicles because they just simply don’t know enough about them or feel they need special equipment. Toyota is the kind of brand that accepts challenges and not runs from them. Their hybrid line is one of the best in the industry. Using technology and innovation, the Toyota Prius Prime keeps the planet safe without complication. Instead of using special equipment to charge it up, the Toyota Prius Prime uses a noncomplex cable that simply plugs into the regular outlet already in most home garages. Simple right? No worries about losing a charge on the road because there are charge mappings that can be found on the Toyota Prius Prime app that is directly downloadable to the driver’s phone. Charging, climate control, radio settings, saved destinations, fuel guides, and more are all in the palm of your hand with the app. Sounds like love to me. With a sleek exterior and interior, the Toyota Prius Prime is geared towards everyone - single moms, college students, retirees, and first time drivers – the entire family. It’s sporty and a smooth ride all in one. Well, now that you know what drives my family and Toyota, can I ride along to see what drives yours? Let’s Go Places. For more information, visit Toyota.com.
