COMMENTARY

Major Announcement From Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. On His Health and Future

O

By Jesse Jackson, National Writer

n July 17, 1960, I was arrested, along with seven other college students, for advocating for the right to use a public library in my hometown of Greenville, S.C. I remember it like it was yesterday, for that day changed my life forever. From that experience, I lost my fear of being jailed for a righteous cause. I went on to meet Dr. King and dedicate my heart and soul to the fight for justice, equality, and equal access. In the tradition of the Apostle Paul, I have offered myself – my mind, body and soul – as a living sacrifice. Throughout my career of service, God has kept me in the embrace of his loving arms, and protected me and my family from dangers, seen and unseen. Now in the latter years of my life, at 76 years old, I find it increasingly difficult to perform routine tasks, and getting around is more of a challenge. My family and I began to notice changes

POLITICAL

S

enate Republicans are poised to return after the Thanksgiving break and begin debating their tax bill on the floor, but don’t expect the body to move forward without a bit more controversy. Despite a rapid move by the House to pass its tax bill out of the chamber this week with just 13 Republicans opposed, the fight in the Senate is expected to be more precarious. While the Senate Finance Committee advanced its bill out of committee late Thursday along party lines, one Republican, Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, has already as it’s currently written and Democrats are trying to mobilize their base against the bill now that it will include a partial repeal of the Affordable Care Act. That leaves Majority Leader Mitch McConnell with little room to lose anyone else. To pass their bill, Senate Republicans need a majority of the vote, which means they can lose only one more member assuming Johnson stays a “no.” Already, Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, has said she has deep reservations about including a repeal of Obamacare’s individual coverage mandate in the tax bill. “I personally think that it complicates tax reform,” Collins told reporters earlier this week. Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, remains a wild card on the bill and leadership is watching Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Jeff Flake of Arizona, who have expressed concerns in

about three years ago. For a while, I resisted interrupting my work to visit a doctor. But as my daily physical struggles intensified I could no longer ignore the symptoms, so I acquiesced. After a battery of tests, my physicians identified the issue as Parkinson’s disease, a disease that bested my father. Recognition of the effects of this disease on me has been painful, and I have been slow to grasp the gravity of it. For me, a Parkinson’s diagnosis is not a stop sign but rather a signal that I must make lifestyle changes and dedicate myself to physical therapy in hopes of slowing the disease’s progression. I am far from alone. God continues to give me new opportunities to serve. This diagnosis is personal but it is more than that. It is an opportunity for me to use my voice

to help in finding a cure for a disease that afflicts 7 to 10 million worldwide. Some 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every year. I will continue to try to instill hope in the hopeless, expand our democracy to the disenfranchised and free innocent prisoners around the world. I’m also spending some time working on my memoir so I can share with others the lessons I have learned in my life of public service. I steadfastly affirm that I would rather wear out than rust out. I want to thank my family and friends who continue to care for me and support me. I will need your prayers and graceful understanding as I undertake this new challenge. As we continue in the struggle for human rights, remember that God will see us through, even in our midnight moments.

What’s Next for the Republican Tax Plan: All Eyes Move to the Senate By Lauren Fox, CNN

the past about adding to the federal budget deficit with tax cuts and aren’t running for re-election in 2018. “I met with Mnuchin today,” Corker told reporters earlier this week, speaking of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. “I continue to talk to the tax writers. I haven’t spoken to a single piece of policy on it. It’s just a broader picture of, you know, I just want to make sure this is something that is going to strengthen our country over time. But I haven’t taken a position on the bill yet. I’m still working with folks to see if there is some way to be ensured that, as it relates to the deficit issue, we’re not going to create harm.” There is little argument on Capitol Hill that Republicans need a victory. It’s part of the reason many members predict they will be able to make the case and pass tax legislation in the end. But getting the proposal through the Senate is just the first obstacle. Many House Republicans are also vocal with their concerns about the way the Senate tax bill is written and how the two bodies would combine the bills in a conference committee. Republicans fear that the bill, which fully repeals a popular state and local tax deduction for property, income and sales taxes, goes too far. Northeast Republicans, who have fought to preserve the state and local property deduction in the House, want to see the Senate adopt a provision that would at the very least allow people to deduct property taxes up to $10,000 like the House bill does.

Nov. 23 - Nov. 29, 2017 www.stylemagazine.com

U.S. Senate Another sticking point is the structure of the Senate bill on the individual side. While the House reduces the number of tax brackets to four, the Senate bill maintains seven brackets. The Senate bill provides a more generous child tax credit and includes a repeal of the individual mandate. The House bill includes an immediate reduction in the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%. The Senate bill delays that corporate tax rate by a year. During a closed-door meeting with House Republicans on Thursday, members told CNN, President Donald Trump addressed some of the House’s concerns with the Senate bill and told the House GOP that the Senate would come along in the end. “He made a couple of references to the Senate,” Arkansas Rep. Steve Womack said of Trump’s address Thursday morning to

House Republicans. “He just said, ‘They’ll come around.’” But the Senate has failed before. After trying multiple times to repeal and replace Obamacare, senators eventually had to move on to tax reform. There is some concern -- even among members who support including a repeal of the individual mandate in the Senate tax bill -- that the Senate could be complicating its must-pass tax effort. The fact remains, however, that the GOP needs the money. To pass the measure under the Senate rules, the bill cannot increase the deficit outside the 10-year window, and repealing the individual mandate gives Senate Republicans $338 billion more to work with over a decade.

r. Willie Wilson made a special presentation to flood victims, at Forest Lawn Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. On every fifth Sunday, a combined service is held between four churches in the Houston area. As a friend of one of the Pastors, Wilson decided to make his donation during this service. Wilson had previously instructed each pastor to list 30 people who they knew who were affected by the flood. At the time of service, he called each member whose name had been written down and presented them with envelopes, each containing $500. In addition, he gave $10,000 to each pastor to help others in need, as well as $10,000 to a nearby school.

Altuve earned every bit of individual glory that came his way, including the American League Most Valuable Player Award, the Players Choice Awards for Player of the Year and AL Most Outstanding Player and, as announced on Friday, the Esurance MLB Award for Best Major Leaguer.

exican cartels smuggle more drugs into the U.S. than any other criminal group, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration said in a new report. The 2017 National Drug Threat Assessment released in October lists six cartels as having major influences across the country and Texas. Cartels’ influence in Texas is far-reaching, affecting cities hundreds of miles from the state’s border with Mexico. San Antonio is the only city in the state with a drug trade controlled by the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, which deals mostly with methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana, according to the DEA, The Gulf Cartel has a hold on cities in Texas’ tip and coastal bend.

University of Houston Regents Vote to Create a Medical School [TexasTribune.org]

S

uggesting it has found a way to address state leaders’ worries that Texas is building too many medical schools, the University of Houston System moved Thursday to create a college of medicine for its flagship campus. The decision is the biggest step yet toward a longtime dream for the university. A new medical school would probably grow UH’s research expenditures and heighten its reputation as a well-rounded, rising university. But before it starts admitting students and granting degrees, it would need to secure funding from the Texas Legislature and approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to offer medical degrees. State leaders have expressed skepticism of new medical schools in the past.

Texas sheriff suggested criminal charges are possible for the owner of a white truck that bears a profane message for President Donald Trump and his supporters, sparking a debate about the line between obscene words and freedom of speech. “F*** TRUMP AND F*** YOU FOR VOTING FOR HIM” reads the decal in bold white letters. A hand with a middle finger extended sits in the middle of the decal. In a post on Facebook, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy E. Nehls said he had received numerous calls about the offending sticker. The truck is often seen along FM 359, a state highway near Richmond, Nehls wrote. He asked for tips on the identity of the truck’s owner and said he would “like to discuss it” with the owner.

While Victoria’s Secret was in the middle of its reboot, a consumer shift took hold that opened the door for competitors: “Bralettes.” Designed for comfort, bralettes are unconstructed bras without padding or underwire. ENTERTAIMENT Kick Off the Holiday Season With the Houston Ballet’s Jubilee of Dance By Kelsey Whittington, Style Feature Writer

T

he Houston Ballet’s annual Jubilee of Dance is always an amazing treat to get into the holiday season and this year was no different. The impact of Hurricane Harvey had the Houston Ballet out of commission for two weeks but the saying “the show must go on,” really stuck with these amazing dancers. Many feared that the exclusive one night only event would be canceled but through hard work and dedication Houston was able to witness amazing dancing. Just a few short weeks after the Houston Astros won the World Series we were able to see that great talent does not stop on the baseball field. Stanton Welch AM, an Australian choreographer who has been artistic director of the Houston Ballet since 2003, helped to develop dancers by raising the intensity level and focusing on perfecting the dancer’s techniques and stage presence. He has also helped grow the company into one the world’s largest ballet companies which have resulted in them touring nationally and internationally. The dancers showed pure raw talent and dedication which caused many of the audience members to be blown away. The evening consisted of different world-renowned ballet numbers including Don Quixote,

Swan Lake, and Punctilious, each telling a story and helped to highlight the passion that every member on that stage has for the world of ballet. Talent from past seasons and seasons to come was shown though principle dancers that included Jessica Collado, Ian Casady, and Yuriko Kajiya along with new talent that included Naazir Muhammad, Shaelynn Estrada, and Austen Acevedo. Since ballets don’t have any dialogue it is very important for the dancers to exhibit emotion through their dancing to keep the audience hooked on their performance and that is exactly what they did. Whether in box seats or the mezzanine the audience was able to feel as if they were a part of the story. With Houston being one of the most diverse cities in the country, the Houston Ballet shows that off by having so many different races and nationalities represented within the company. “I am really glad I came. This was my first ballet and it was amazing to see so much talent from such a diverse cast. We do not see this enough and I am glad I was able to experience something so great,” said Joy Olurebi. Having such a diverse company

is only one factor that makes the Houston Ballet a great organization but the success of the company cannot be done without the help of a few dedicated people. The Jubilee of Dance was permanently changed to the Margaret Alkek Williams Jubilee of Dance in honor of Williams for her amazing support to the Houston Ballet over the years and her gift to endow the annual gala event. With the help of Williams and many others including musical director Emanno Florio, the night could not have been the success it was. Ballet Master’s Louise

Lester, Steven Woodgate, and Barbara Bears worked countless hours along with Welch and Florio to make sure they were putting their best foot forward to give the city a powerful and remarkable performance. Over the years the Houston Ballet has had many supporters that have come together in order to make it a night that many look forward to all year. I had been looking forward to combining my skills as a writer and as an actor and this was the right time.”

SPORTS Andre Johnson Day:

Houston Texans Defeat Arizona Cardinals By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer

T

he Houston Texans gave the franchise leader in receiving yards, receptions, and touchdowns, Andre Johnson the best gift he could receive on the official, “Andre Lamont Johnson Day,” a victory. Houston ended a three-game losing streak by defeating the Arizona Cardinals 31-21 in front of a very enthusiastic crowd who came to celebrate with the hometown hero.

that resulted in touchdowns for the Cardinals. Yet he found a way to bounce back in the second half to lead the Texans to a much needed win and finished the day 22-32 for 230 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. Head Coach Bill O’ Brien had some encouraging words when he was speaking about his quarterback. “I thought I’ll be honest with you. I thought he played a very mentally tough game,” O’Brien said.

Johnson became the first player in team history to be inducted into the Houston Texans Ring of Honor during halftime. “I just wanted to come here and play. Just do things the right way.

The Texans offense also got a boost from the running game. Rookie running back D’Onta Foreman had a very impressive outing by averaging 6.5 yards a carry and two touchdowns. His final touchdown was a 34 yard scamper into the end zone that helped put the game away, but it came with a price. Foreman was carted off the field in the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury.

I just wanted to be a good football player,” said Johnson during his speech. He went on to say that he wanted to do everything he could to put this franchise on the map, and the loud roar of the crowd proved he did. Another Texans smiling today was QB Tom Savage. Starting in his fourth game of the season (he was the opening day starter before being pulled at halftime for D. Watson), Savage had a rough first half after he committed two second quarter turnovers

SPORTS T

he Houston Texans said a huge ‘thank you’ to former player Andre Johnson by making him their first inductee into the Texans Ring of Honor during this past Sunday’s home game. The former wide receiver spent 12 seasons with the team and signed a one-day contract on Wednesday, April 19 to officially retire as a member of the Texans. Johnson earned seven Pro Bowl berths with Houston and remains the team’s all-time leader in numerous categories, including receptions (1,012), receiving yards (13,597) and receiving touchdowns (64). Throughout the week leading up to the game, the Texans hosted several events in honor of Johnson. On Tuesday, the City of Houston presented the former Texan with a proclamation proclaiming Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017 as “Andre Johnson Day.” Later that evening, children from the Houston Texans YMCA hosted a retirement party for Johnson at Bowlmor Lanes along with current Texans players, Mascot TORO, Cheerleaders and Ambassador Chester Pitts. In partnership with Palais Royal, 80 lucky winners were selected to meet Johnson at NRG Stadium and receive an autograph and photo with the former Texans great.

WR DeAndre Hopkins also had a good performance on Sunday. Although the numbers won’t jump out on the stat sheet (4 catches, 76 yards, and 1 TD), it was Hopkins 19.0 yard average per catch against arguably one of the best defensive backs in the game in Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson that was impressive. “If I could

If there has been one constant in the Texans’ play, it has been the disruptive play of LB Jadeveon Clowney and the rest of the Texans defense. They came up big again by forcing two key interceptions to stall drives for the Cardinals in the second half. When asked how important getting those turnovers were, Clowney responded with, “It was

very big. It put our offense in a good situation.” For as happy as the crowd of over 71,000 in attendance was for the win, the day clearly belonged to the former all-pro WR Andre Johnson. Cardinals’ future Hall of Fame WR Larry Fitzgerald had nothing but positive praises for Johnson. “He was the most dominant receiver in the game for a large part of his career and had a positive influence on a guy following in his footsteps in DeAndre Hopkins,” said Fitzgerald.

Has this all kind of hit you now that from here on out, your name is going to be here at NRG Stadium in the Ring of Honor and that you will always be the first one?

Johnson: “Yeah. When we were doing the rehearsal yesterday, we were going through the things, they told me at the point I would turn around and see my name hung up. I actually saw there was like a black tarp or something over it yesterday. I turned around and I looked up and she told me where I would be looking and I saw the black thing up there and it just kind of hit me, I was like, ‘Wow, my name will be up there forever’. A change in routine, family visits, traveling, illness, holiday menus and financial concerns can all conspire to derail your best efforts at keeping chronic conditions, like high blood pressure, under control.

raise blood pressure and decrease the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications. It’s best to use them for the shortest duration possible and avoid in severe or uncontrolled hypertension. Consider alternative therapies, such as nasal saline, intranasal corticosteroids or antihistamines, as appropriate.

If you are one of the millions of American adults with high blood pressure, it is vital to keep your blood pressure stable. Drastic changes can put you at risk for heart attack or stroke.

Keep Track of Medication

Here are three ways to control your blood pressure throughout the holiday season from the American Heart Association:

Be Wary of Decongestants

Decongestants are in many over-thecounter cold and flu medications but they have some harmful side effects. They can

The winter months tend to bring an increase in both heart attacks and strokes. According to research from the Journal of the American Heart Association, a 4.2 percent increase in heart-related deaths occurs away from a hospital from Dec. 25-Jan. 7. “Factors like cold weather, sudden increase in activity like shoveling snow, stress and dietary indiscretion can contribute to a chain of events leading to more stress on the heart during the winter months, potentially triggering a heart attack or other cardiac

event,” said Jorge Plutzky, M.D., director of Preventive Cardiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a volunteer with the American Heart Association. It is vital to keep track of your medication and take it as prescribed by your doctor to decrease chances of heart attack and stroke. The American Heart Association’s Check Change Control Tracker is one way to monitor your health, as it allows you to set up text message reminders, text in blood pressure readings, connect with volunteers or providers, and receive messages from volunteers or providers.

Maintain Healthy Eating Habits

Don’t feel like you can’t indulge a little, but make sure to incorporate healthy meals. Staying active while traveling can be a challenge, as well. Try bringing simple exercise equipment like a jump rope or resistance band with you. Consider walking to sights or restaurants nearby, or finding a local park or indoor walking path. TRAVEL Montgomery, AL:

A City That Is On the Move Into the Future By Reginald Dominique, Social Media Editor

W

elcome to Montgomery, Alabama, the “Capital of Dreams.” Serving as the capital of Alabama, Montgomery was once the capital of the Confederacy States of America when Jefferson Davis was sworn in at the steps of the capitol building as the president of the CSA on February 4, 1861. That was the beginning of Alabama’s long lasting American history that still prevails in the south until this day. From the welcoming citizens and good food to the rolling hills and its historic past, there is no denying that this cool capital cool city is definitely worth a visit. Join me as I take the challenge and discover a new destination, the new Montgomery!

The History

At 200 years old, Montgomery is known for being the birthplace of the Civil War and Civil Rights Movement; however, the city is also older than the state of Alabama itself. History says that Andrew Dexter, Jr. founded ‘New Philadelphia’, which is the present day eastern part of downtown. With the thought that his town would one day grow in popularity, Dexter set aside a hilltop known as “Goat Hill” as the future location for the state capitol building. New Philadelphia indeed prospered and General John Scott with his group of first settlers built a new town adjacent calling it East Alabama Town. The towns became rivals, but merged on December 3, 1819, and were incorporated as the city of Montgomery. The new city was named for General Richard Montgomery. The legacy of the towns’ merger still can be seen today in the alignment of downtown streets where Court Street and Dexter Avenue meet.

The Civil War

The state of Alabama was central to the Civil War, with the secession convention at Montgomery, birthplace of the Confederacy, inviting other states to form the Southern Republic, during 1861, and develop

constitutions to legally run their own affairs. Emerging from its agricultural roots in the 19th century, Montgomery transformed from the Cradle of the Confederacy to the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement in less than a century. Two months after Jefferson Davis took his oath of office on the steps of the capitol building he sent a telegram from the Winter Building on April 11, 1861, to authorize his general to fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston S.C. That was the official start of the Civil War.

The Civil Rights Movement

Nearly 90 years after the start of the Civil War in Montgomery, the city found itself yet again at the center of attention in 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to “move to the back of the bus,” sparking the birth of the Civil Rights Movement. There is no denying that Alabama was the site of some of the most defining events of the civil rights era, transforming the state and profoundly changing America. And to think, it all began with the Montgomery Bus Boycott. What was supposed to only be one day of boycotting, nearly 30,000 African Americans participated in the bus boycott lasting for 13 months. Soon after came the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, then the Tuskegee Fight for Voting Rights, followed by the Sit-Ins and Freedom Rides, which ultimately lead to the March on Selma that also took place on the steps of the Montgomery State capitol building. With the many lives taken and the nation shaken, the Civil Rights Movement was seen as the rise of the Black Power Movement. The hard work came with joy after President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Attractions

There is something for everyone of all ages to do in Montgomery. While visiting the city, I was lucky enough to visit some

Montgomery, AL of the best historical monuments and tourist attractions. Start your tour off at the Rosa Parks Museum. Ran by Troy University, and built at the exact spot where Parks was arrested, the museum tour starts with a film about segregation in the South in the 1950s with an emphasis on the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Following the film is an animated version of a Montgomery bus, Rosa Parks’ actions and what happened to her afterward. The museum contains displays of photos, documents, and short videos of people discussing the bus boycott. I must admit that it was rather inspiring to hear first-hand stories and the conviction they had to see it through. While this was a small but very important part of the civil rights movement, I found the museum to be very well laid out and interesting. It’s a must-see. Of course, no visit to Montgomery is complete without seeing the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and the Dexter Parsonage. Shortly after marrying his college sweetheart in Alabama in 1954, 24-yearold Martin Luther King, Jr. preached his first sermon at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, a block from the Alabama State Capitol where Southern secessionist had formed the Confederacy in 1861. King went on to preach at this church for six years until 1960 before he went back to Atlanta to co-pastor with his father at Ebenezer A.M.E.

Also, be sure to take a tour of the state capitol building located on “Goat Hill” and if you want to get your “Honky Tonk” on stop by the Hank Williams Museum to view many of his artifacts and the death

car Williams died in at the age of 29.

The Cuisine

For dinner, one of the greatest places you can dine at is Vintage Year. From dinner with friends and family to the most memorable special occasions, the Vintage Year has been an important part of Montgomery’s social scene since 1984. What began as Montgomery’s only specialty wine shop soon became a destination for gourmet lunches and dinner entrees were added and the rest is history. The Vintage Year has held the honor as one of the Capitol’s favorite dining experiences for decades with over a quarter century of stories to be told. The restaurant has served several southern governors, noted attorney Johnny Cochran, and John F. Kennedy Jr., to name just a few.

On A Personal Note:

I honestly did not know all of the history that lies in Montgomery. This city is a special gem. Many people pass by Montgomery; either on I-85 switching to I-65 on their way to and from Atlanta or just because they do not know what the city offers. This place is filled with warmth, love, history, and honor. A perfect place to visit year round, I highly urge anyone to place Montgomery, Alabama on their places to visit list. Special thanks to Meg Lewis and Dawn Hathcock of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and Michael Hicks, Vice President of Lou Hammond Group for making this wonderful trip a unique one. Our eyes are sometimes bigger than what we can hold and we dispose of the excess. Finding the perfect size that is right between too little and too big to get that happy medium is challenging. Somehow Toyota has managed to make the ideal merger in the compact car, Toyota Corolla iM 5-door hatchback. When thinking small one thinks less. Don’t think that when it comes to the Toyota Corolla iM think more. The list of features that come standard are quite impressive so there is not really a need for additional option packages. Plus, the starting price of $18,750 is not bad for everything that is equipped with the vehicle. Toyota pretty much stayed true to previous models by only adding a few advanced features and a slight price increase for the 2017 version. Overall, the Toyota Corolla iM is a lot of car for not a lot of money.

Usually, I would describe vehicles like the Toyota Corolla iM as cute but with the style this vehicle has cute seems inadequate. There is major attitude happening with the exterior design. Starting with the standard 17-inch alloy wheels Toyota draws consumers in with the intricate spin design

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor and midnight black highlights. Attention is grabbed from the front and the back with sporty details that are further enhanced by its MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension. Outside mirrors are heated and retractable. LED daytime running lights illuminate the night to make the vehicle seen and the road more visible. On the inside is where smaller vehicles can have problems trying to provide enough space for passengers, storage, technology, and other features. Toyota struggles a bit with space as the driver and front passenger have ample head and leg room but because of the hatchback design backseat passengers have less leg room space.

On the same token, if more cargo space is needed, the hatchback area is large and becomes larger when backseats are flipped down. Another problem for smaller vehicles is the difficulty that comes when passengers try to gain access to the backseat. There’s no problem with the Toyota Corolla iM due to the big, wide doors making getting in the backseat a breeze. Driving the Toyota Corolla iM is the best. Whipping in and out of traffic is a snap. Fitting into small spaces is a cinch. It is very easy to drive. Acceleration is smooth due to excellent CVT. However, accelerations at high

2017 Toyota Corolla iM speeds is noisy and a little slow in comparison to competitors. Going from 0-60 mph in 10 seconds, the Toyota Corolla iM is powered by a 137-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder. EPA fuel estimates are good at 27-mpg city and 35 mpg highway. Safety is of the utmost importance to Toyota. Eight airbags, tire pressure monitoring, lane departure alert, whiplash injury lessening seats, and a start safety system to help with traction and braking are all standard.

2017 Toyota Corolla iM

Keeping driver and passengers even safer is the standard Toyota Safety Sense C system that assists in preventing frontal collisions in certain situations by alerting the driver with audible and visual warnings.

Technology is also key. With dual climate controls, 7-inch touchscreen display, navigation, backup camera, Aha Radio, Bluetooth, and so much more, the Toyota Corolla iM gives more than what drivers bargain for. Advanced voice recognition and steering wheel controls make it easy for the driver to keep their eyes on the road while adjusting the radio, making a call, or turning on cruise control. Not too small and not too big, the Toyota Corolla iM really is the perfect merger in size, technology, safety, and performance. It provides everything a driver needs in a nice package. riendsgiving is the perfect opportunity to celebrate your second family with festive, fun recipes that stray a bit away from traditional fare. “Friendsgiving is often held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving,” said Chef Kevan Vetter of the McCormick Kitchens. “It’s more of a potluck party than a traditional Thanksgiving – everyone is usually assigned a dish. Instead of stuffing or a green bean casserole, bring a dish that’s a little more fun, like corn pudding with a dash of smoky heat from chipotle chili pepper.” Find more recipes to share with friends this season at McCormick.com.

Heights Bier Garten Hosts Hendrick’s Grand Garnisher By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

chicken breast that is seasoned, battered, and fried until golden and crisp. It is served on a Sesame Challah bun, green tomato relish, and Jalapeño buttermilk dressing. The meat was well-seasoned, tender, and juicy; the bread was slightly toasted, which complimented the flavors in the chicken. We added fries to our order, but the sandwich did not need any company.

Heights Bier Garten, located at 1443 Shephard Drive in the Heights area, had a full house of curious patrons who were introduced to the giant cucumber slicer by Brand Ambassador and Mattias Horseman, who handed out cocktail samples that were garnished with a freshly cut slice of cucumber from the Garnisher. The libations were delicious and were just enough to tickle our appetites for dinner.

Additionally, we enjoyed our meal on the patio that is also pet-friendly. Therefore, The Heights Bier Garten is a one-stop shop for food, fun, cocktails, craft beers, and pets. They are open seven days a week, until 2:00 a.m. Visit their website: http://heightsbiergarten.com/, download their menu, and plan your visit.

Our eyes gazed over the menu, which is rather impressive for a place that is known more for its 94 on tap craft beers. They also have an open patio concept that divides the restaurant and features two bar areas, one for the beer enthusiasts and the other for the cocktail lovers.

BOOKS “You Don’t Own Me: How Mattel v. MGA

Entertainment Exposed Barbie’s Dark Side” by Orly Lobel By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

A

s a kid, what was your favorite toy?You can probably remember it instantly: the thing you couldn’t bear to leave at home, the doll you spent hours with, the toy truck that road-tripped your imagination. Just thinking of it gives you a warm feeling and a wistful smile but in “You Don’t Own Me” by Orly Lobel, you’ll read about two toy companies that weren’t playin’. Years after it happened, Carter Bryant couldn’t tell you what spurred him to think the way he did that sunny afternoon. Maybe it was dissatisfaction with his on-again-off-again job at Mattel. Maybe it was a recent, nasty break-up with his on-again-off-again boyfriend. Or maybe it was a quirk in his impressively creative mind that made him notice three teenagers as they left their small-town-Missouri school, and that made Bryant think of his huge idea.

And so, as he moved from Los Angeles to his parents’ home in Missouri then back to Mattel a few times, Bryant obsessed about three hip teenage dolls, drawing and re-drawing, putting them away and revisiting them, creating their fictitious lives, rounding them out and making them real. In August 2000, a friend and former Mattel co-worker introduced Bryant to two people who would change his life; both were executives at Mattel rival MGA. And both were excited to see what Bryant had been calling his “Bratz.” For many years, Isaac Larian, a Jewish-Iranian immigrant and the owner-founder of toy company MGA, had been looking for a blockbuster toy. He wanted to own it, not just distribute it, and he was “no stranger to litigation.” That was a good thing because, after many attempts to get Barbie back on her molded feet to fight against Larian and MGA’s newly-purchased Bratz fashion-doll line, Mattel got mad. And in

2004, it filed the first lawsuit… Do you own the ideas you concoct on your own time? Or can your employer take them for free? Those are just two of the intriguing questions inside “You Don’t Own Me.” Of course, in the case of Mattel vs. MGA, many arguments were made, and author Orly Lobel recounts them here. While there’s some lean in the narrative, and well-considered author opinion, Lobel also presents a nice full background of both companies, as well as biographies, to allow for better understanding before she launches her subtle argument-starters. Mixed with the story, Lobel looks at gender and the nature of play, which lends a nostalgic tone to a book that’s highly readable, even if you’re not in business. This book – and the story – ends on an uneasy note; absolutely, it’ll give inventors pause and businesspeople a reason for eagle-eyed vigilance. For sure, “You Don’t Own Me” shows that the ownership of ideas is nothing to toy with. Share this story online at stylemagazine. com.

All his life, he’d been an artist and he’d dreamed of designing clothes. After graduating from fashion school, he

landed a job at Mattel to work with Barbie but Mattel had no tolerance for spontaneous creativity, says Lobel, and that was something Bryant couldn’t abide.
